Abstract

We have developed a low background hard X-ray/gamma-ray telescope (Welcome-1) for balloon-borne experiments in the energy range from 40 keV to 800-1000 keV. The detector is based on newly developed well-type phoswich counters. In the first well-type phoswich counter, GSO(Ce) (|Gd.sub.2~Si|O.sub.5~ doped with Ce) is used as the detection part and CsI(Tl) as the shielding part. Welcome-1 consists of 64 GSO/CsI well-type phoswich counters assembled in the 'compound-eye' configuration and the effective area is 740 |cm.sup.2~ at 122 keV and 222 |cm.sup.2~ at 511 keV line. The well-type phoswich counter and the compound eye configuration reduces background significantly both external and internal and allows us a high signal-to-noise ratio in balloon-borne experiments. The data from the detector is taken by the versatile data acquisition system based on the VME computer specially designed for balloon-borne experiments. In the system, the arrival time of each event is recorded by the clock system which utilizes GPS satellite. The background levels at an altitude of 4.5g/|cm.sup.2~ are 1 X |10.sup.-4~/|cm.sup.2~/s/keV at 122 keV. Crab nebula has been observed with the signal to background ratio better than unity between 100 and 200 keV. In this paper, the desine of the telescope and the flight performance are presented.

Abstract

Abstract: We report on the results of Chandra observations of the galaxy cluster AWM7. The ACIS image reveals new substructures with a spatial extent of more than 8″ (4 kpc at AWM7) near the cD galaxy center, represented by a hard sub-peak and a soft peak. These substructures suggest that a dynamical process related to the formation of the cD galaxy is now taking place. Inside the cluster core within a radius of 2′, annular spectra with every 10″ step are fitted well by single temperature models. The temperature gradually drops from 4.2 keV at a radius of 60 kpc (2′) to 1.8 keV at the cluster center. The radial abundance profile shows a gradient with a peak metallicity of 1.5 solar at a radius of about 15″ (7 kpc). A two-dimensional map shows two high metallicity blob-like regions, which may be the gas expelled from the cD galaxy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

We carried out observations of the central and 20' east offset regions of the cluster of galaxies Abell 1060 with Suzaku. Spatially resolved X-ray spectral=analysis has revealed temperature and abundance profiles of Abell 1060 out to 27'0≃380 h−170 kpc, which corresponded to ∼0.3 γvir. The temperature decrease of the intra cluster medium from 3.4 keV at the center to 2.2 keV in the outskirt region are clearly observed. Si, S and Fe abundances also decrease by more than 50% from the center to the outer parts, while Mg shows a fairly constant abundance of ∼ 0.7 solar within γ < 17'. O shows a lower abundance of ∼ 0.3 solar in the central region (γ < 6'), and indicates a similar feature with Mg, however it is sensitive to the estimated contribution of the Galactic components at the outer annuli (γ > 13').Results on temperature and abundances of Si, S, and Fe are consistent with those derived by XMM-Newton atγ < 13' The formation and metal enrichment of the cluster are discussed based on implications of our results.
