Abstract

Researchers have investigated whether plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) would be diminished in eight male volunteers during one-hour exposure of 3 atmospheres absolute (atm abs) air. Attention was given to the mechanisms which may cause any AVP response. It was established that an acute hyperbaric exposure of 3 atm abs boosted the negativity of inspiratory intrapleural pressure and inspiratory central venous pressure (CVP). There was no change to transmural CVP.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of the four different combinations of metamotivational state and felt arousal level (telic-low, paratelic-low, telic-high, paratelic-high) on archery performance. Skilled, average, and novice archers (n=28) were voluntary subjects, randomly divided into 2 groups, balanced for ability. Each group performed 2 out of the 4 experimental conditions. In this reversal theory-based field experiment, telic and paratelic metamotivational states and arousal level were manipulated prior to archery performance. The hypothesis that archery performance would be superior under telic-low arousal conditions was rejected, but evidence pointed to the possible importance of hedonic tone in performance. Post hoc analysis showed differences between combined high (telic-low, paratelic-high) and combined low (telic-low, paratelic-high) hedonic-tone groups which fell short of significance. This observation is taken as justification for further exploration of the relationship between hedonic tone and sports performance.

Abstract

Antimalarials are usually recommended for the first-line systemic treatment of cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Alopecia in patients with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is sometimes a refractory condition in spite of topical therapies. We herein described a case of DLE on the scalp with a pathological change of a xanthomatous reaction, which was successfully treated with hydroxychloroquine (HCQ). A 34-year-old woman presented with hair loss to the parietal region. She had been diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) four years previously. Treatment with 30 mg/day of prednisolone (PSL) had been initiated, and the dose was gradually reduced. At 10 mg/day of PSL, she had noticed her hair loss. Physical examination revealed some small erythematous lesions to the parietal region with accompanying hair loss. Pathological findings of the erythematous lesion on her head revealed thickening of the basement membrane zone, the interface dermatitis with vacuolar degeneration, and both superficial perivascular and perifollicular infiltration of inflammatory cells in the dermis. In addition, there was an infiltrate of xanthomatous cells detected in the papillary dermis, which were positive for CD68 and CD163. The patient started treatment with HCQ at a dose of 200 mg/day. The skin lesions completely resolved within five months after initiation of HCQ without increase in the dose of PSL. Xanthomatous reactions are rarely recognized in lupus erythematosus. The chronic epithelial injury in DLE could be implicated in triggering the secondary reactive process of a xanthomatous reaction. We believe that the reaction seen in our patient was a secondary change to pathological alteration due to SLE. Abstract

The Subjective Vitality Scale (SVS: Ryan & Frederick, 1997) is a 7-item self-report instrument to measure one's level of vitality and has been widely used in psychological studies. However, there have been discrepancies in which version of the SVS (7- or 6-item version) employed between as well as within researchers. Moreover, Item 5 seems not be a good indicator of vitality from a content validity perspective. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the SVS for Japanese and Singaporeans rigorously by comparing 3 measurement models (5-, 6-, and 7-item models). To this end, the scale was first translated from English to Japanese and then the Japanese and English versions of the scale were administered to Japanese (n = 268) and Singaporean undergraduate students (n = 289), respectively. The factorial and concurrent validity of the three models were examined independently on each of the samples. Furthermore, the covariance stability of the vitality responses was assessed over a 4-week time period for another independent Japanese sample (n = 140). The findings from this study indicated that from methodological and content validity perspectives, the 5-item model is considered most preferable for both language versions of the SVS.

Abstract

Ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) loci, including those of nucleolus-forming 18S, 5.8S and 28S (major) and non-nucleolus-forming 5S (minor) rDNA, were assigned using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to the embryonic chromosomes of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), masu salmon (O. masou), brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and Japanese huchen (Hucho perryi). In these species, the minor rDNA loci were located basically on 2-4 chromosome pairs, whereas the major rDNA loci were found essentially on one chromosome pair, except for the brook trout. Its major rDNA loci were dispersed on about half of the chromosome complement, showing a considerable interindividual variation in the number and location. The major and minor rDNA loci were separated onto different chromosomes in the examined species, except for the rainbow trout, in which one chromosome pair had tandemly aligned minor and major rDNA loci. Chromosome regions containing both kinds of rDNA loci in each species were found to be stained with C-banding, showing an association of these loci with heterochromatin. Comparison of the assigned major rDNA loci and sequentially detected silver (Ag)-stained nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) in all the species revealed a considerable polymorphism in the number and size of AgNORs among or within those loci, suggesting a possible inter- or intralocus inactivation of the major rDNAs.

Abstract

Background Palisaded neutrophilic and granulomatous dermatitis (PNGD) is a commonly occurring condition related to systemic autoimmune disease. It is characterized histopathologically by a distinct pattern of granulomatous inflammation in the presence or absence of leukocytoclastic vasculitis. The properties of granulomatous cells in PNGD are still uncertain. Objective We sought further investigation on the phenotype of the infiltrated cells in PNGD from two patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and reviewed the previous published reports in order to provide a comprehensive summary on the clinical features of PNGD in SLE. Methods The immunohistochemical features of granulomatous cells in PNGD associated with SLE were analyzed. Immunohistochemical studies were performed on sections from our two cases using antibodies against CD68, CD163, CD15, Factor XIIIa, myeloperoxidase and neutrophil elastase. The clinical characteristics of the SLE patients who developed PNGD were also evaluated. We included all cases retrieved through a PubMed search with the key words PNGD and SLE. Results Cutaneous lesions consisted of erythematous plaques distributed on the face and upper limbs in both cases. The infiltrated cells were mainly positive for CD68 and CD163, a phenotype suggestive of M2 macrophages. Some mature neutrophils and lymphocytes were also present. A review of the literature of PNGD associated with SLE revealed a predominance in females, high prevalence of lupus nephritis and a good response to systemic steroids, with frequent skin lesions relapses during tapering of the treatment. Limitations This study examined only two cases; the pathogenesis of the disease remains to be clarified. Conclusion PNGD lesions were abundantly infiltrated by M2 macrophages, suggesting that they may have a role in this condition. SLE accompanied by PNGD might be associated with lupus nephritis and frequent relapses of skin lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Adjunctive thrombus aspiration (TA) during primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) was reported to promote better coronary and myocardial reperfusion. However, long‐term mortality benefit of TA remains controversial. The objective of this study is to investigate the clinical impact of TA on long‐term clinical outcomes in patients with ST‐segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary PCI. Methods and Results: The CREDO‐Kyoto AMI Registry is a large‐scale cohort study of acute myocardial infarction patients undergoing coronary revascularization in 2005–2007 at 26 hospitals in Japan. Among 5429 patients enrolled in the registry, the current study population consisted of 3536 patients who arrived at the hospital within 12 hours after the symptom onset and underwent primary PCI. Clinical outcomes were compared between the 2 patient groups with or without TA. During primary PCI procedures, 2239 out of 3536 (63%) patients underwent TA (TA group). The cumulative 5‐year incidence of all‐cause death was significantly lower in the TA group than in the non‐TA group (18.5% versus 23.9%, log‐rank P<0.001). After adjusting for confounders, however, the risk for all‐cause death in the TA group was not significantly lower than that in the non‐TA group (hazard ratio: 0.90, 95% CI: 0.76 to 1.06, P=0.21). The adjusted risks for cardiac death, myocardial infarction, stroke, and target‐lesion revascularization were also not significantly different between the 2 groups. Conclusions: Adjunctive TA during primary PCI was not associated with better 5‐year mortality in STEMI patients.

Abstract

There is no single reliable method for assessment of the transplanted lung. Multiple modes of assessment are therefore used. In a canine model designed to assess lung preservation, the reliability of information gained from chest radiographs performed in the early post-transplant period was examined. The function of 20 left lung allografts, stored for 12 hours after pulmonary artery flush preservation was studied. Radiographs graded according to disease severity were compared with physiologic function of the transplanted lung assessed immediately and at three days post-transplantation. This protocol enables study of acute preservation-related lung injury and the delayed manifestations of ischemic and reperfusion injury after a three day period of recovery, while avoiding confounding rejection and infectious episodes. The chest radiograph did not reliably reflect function of the flush-preserved transplanted lung. Thus, relying only on this modality may lead to erroneous conclusions. In this study, the progression of radiographic changes associated with the "reimplantation response" differed from previous descriptions, possibly reflecting differences in operative technique or improved lung preservation.

Abstract

Limited donor supply is the major factor restricting the application of lung transplantation. A uniformly reliable method of lung preservation would improve donor organ availability. At present, Euro-Collins' solution, an intracellular fluid-type solution, is most widely used in organ preservation. However, we have previously shown that initial pulmonary flush with an extracellular-type solution (low-potassium dextran solution [LPD]) provided better pulmonary preservation than Euro-C. In the present study, we used an in vitro-ventilated, blood-perfused rabbit lung model to examine whether the mechanism for this improvement was related to the effect of LPD during pulmonary flush or its effect during storage. Rabbit lungs were harvested and stored after pulmonary flush with different solutions (group 1: 400 ml of LPD; group 2: 400 ml of Euro-C; group 4: 300 ml of Euro-C followed by 100 ml of LPD; n = 5 in each group). The lungs were then preserved at 10 degrees C for 18 hr and reperfused with fresh venous blood. After 10 min of reperfusion, lungs in group 1 showed the highest PO2 (group 1: 124.4 +/- 7.7 mmHg; group 2: 46.2 +/- 9.4 mmHg P less than 0.01). Lungs in both group 3 and group 4 showed better lung function and lower wet/dry weight ratio than those in group 2. We conclude that LPD provides better lung preservation by its effects both on pulmonary flush and on storage.

Abstract

A new method has been developed to automatically extract moving vehicles and subsequently determine their speeds from a pair of QuickBird (QB) panchromatic (PAN) and multispectral (MS) images. Since the PAN and MS sensors of QB have a slight time lag (approximately 0.2 s), the speed of a moving vehicle can be determined from the difference in the positions of the vehicle observed in the PAN and MS images due to the time lag. An object-based approach can be used to extract a vehicle from the PAN image, which has a resolution of 0.6 m. However, it is difficult to accurately extract the position of a vehicle from an MS image because its resolution is 2.4 m. Thus, an area correlation method is proposed to determine the location of a vehicle from an MS image at a sub-pixel level. The speed of the moving vehicle can then be calculated by using the vehicle extraction results. This approach was tested on several parts of a QB image covering central Tokyo, Japan, and the accuracy of the results is demonstrated in this study., QC 20140922

Abstract

A new object-based method is developed to extract the moving vehicles and subsequently detect their speeds from two consecutive digital aerial images automatically. Several parameters of gray values and sizes are examined to classify the objects in the image. The vehicles and their associated shadows can be discriminated by removing big objects such as roads. To detect the speed, firstly the vehicles and shadows are extracted from the two images. The corresponding vehicles from these images are linked based on the order, size, and their distance within a threshold. Finally, using the distance between the corresponding vehicles and the time lag between the two images, the moving speed can be detected. Our test shows a promising result of detecting the moving vehicles' speeds. Further development will employ the proposed method for a pair of QuickBird panchromatic and multi-spectral images, which are at a coarser spatial resolution., QC 20141024
