Abstract: Cerium-doped lutetium pyrosilicate crystal, Ce:Lu2Si2O7 (Ce:LPS), was grown by the Czochralski method. The segregation coefficient of Ce3+ ion was studied by the ICP-AES method. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the structure of Ce:LPS crystal was monoclinic symmetry with space group of C2/m. Perfect cleavage planes (110) and imperfect cleavage planes (001) were observed by optical microscope. The reasons why it is difficult to grow crack-free crystals were studied. After optimized growth parameters, a Ce:LPS crystal with dimension of Φ25×30 mm was grown, which is colorless, high optical quality, cracking-free and no inclusions. The transmittance of Ce:LPS crystal from 380 to 800 nm is over 82% and there is no observable absorption. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper, high optical quality cerium-doped lutetium pyrosilicate(LPS:Ce) crystal has been grown by Czochralski method with the seed oriented along cleavage plane (110). The structure, segregation coefficient of Ce3+ and optical characterization of LPS:Ce crystal have been compared with those of LSO:Ce crystal. The results show that LPS:Ce has the advantage over LSO:Ce by having a larger segregation coefficient of Ce3+, lower cost of starting material, lower melting point and only one luminescence mechanism. Thus, LPS:Ce crystal offers an attractive alternative to LSO:Ce for scintillator applications. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Yb:Gd2SiO5 (Yb:GSO) exhibits a large fundamental manifold splitting. Its long-wavelength emission band around 1088 nm, which has the largest emission cross section, encounters the lowest reabsorption losses caused by thermal population of the terminal laser level. As a result, low-threshold and tunable continuous-wave Yb:GSO lasers were demonstrated. A slope efficiency up to 86% and a pumping threshold as low as 127 mW were achieved for a continuous-wave Yb:GSO laser at 1092.5 nm under the pump of a high-brightness laser diode. A continuous tunability between 1000 and 1120 nm was realized with an SF14 prism as the intracavity tuning element. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Yb: YAlO3 (YAP) (15at%) and Yb: Y3Al5O12 (YAG)(15at%) have been grown using the Czochralski method. Their absorption and fluorescence spectra were measured at room temperature and important spectroscopic parameters were calculated. Through the comparison of spectroscopic parameters of Yb:YAP and Yb: YAG, all results indicate that 15at% Yb:YAP crystal is a potential candidate used for compact, efficient thin chip lasers when the laser output wavelength is 1012 or 1038nm. Abstract: Undoped LaAlO3 and Ce-doped LaAlO3 single crystals were grown by the Czochralski process. The segregation coefficient of cerium ions in 1at% Ce: LaAlO3 is 0.28. The undoped LaAlO3 and Ce-doped LaAlO3 single crystals were characterized by infrared transmission spectra and ultraviolet/visible/near-IR absorption spectra. It was observed that the band-to-band absorption of LaAlO3 host is around 209nm. Four characteristic f–f transitions of Ce3+ ion at 1923, 2354, 2669, and 3728cm-1 and five f–d transitions around 198, 206, 214, 246, and 316nm in the Ce-doped LaAlO3 crystal were observed. Strong emission around 410nm was also observed at excitation of 317nm in the Ce-doped LaAlO3 single crystal. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
