Abstract Background Decompensated cirrhosis (DC) is prone to recurrent episodes of decompensation following the initial event. This study aimed to identify the risk factors for subsequent decompensation and assess their impact on the outcomes of patients hospitalized for DC. Methods Patients with DC were divided into two groups based on the occurrence of new decompensated events during hospitalization. Logistic regression analysis was employed to identify risk factors for new decompensation. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to evaluate the relationship between new decompensation and short-term mortality risk in these patients. Results The study cohort consisted of 339 patients with DC, with a median age of 57 years. During hospitalization, 83 patients (24.5%) experienced new decompensated events, with bacterial infections (BIs) being the most common (n = 46, 13.6%). Multivariate analysis revealed that the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score at admission (OR = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.02–1.11, P = 0.005) was the sole risk factor for new decompensation during hospitalization. Background: Human infection with Ureaplasma urealyticum(UU) is mainly manifested as non-gonococcal urethritis, where it can lead to cervicitis, premature rupture of membranes and abortion in women, as well as infertility in males, which becomes a major problem in clinical diagnosis and treatment. At present, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR and culture are the two main methods for detecting UU. The real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR method is cumbersome and cannot accomplish absolute quantification on nucleic acids, while the cultivation method has limitations such as low sensitivity and being time-consuming. The aim of this study is to establish a more rapid and accurate droplet digital PCR(ddPCR) method for the detection of UU. Methods: Primers were designed for the ParC gene of UU. Nucleic acids from a standard strain of UU were extracted. Specificity, sensitivity, and repeatability detection was performed using ddPCR, and the detection performance of ddPCR was evaluated. Results: The detection process could be completed in 92 min. It has a high sensitivity of up to 3.8 pg/μL. With a high specificity, no positive microdrop were detected in eight negative control pathogens in this experiment. In addition, ddPCR detection of UU has good repeatability, and the calculated CV is 2.1 %. Conclusion: Our data indicated that ddPCR detection technology has the characteristics of absolute quantification, high stability, high specificity and high sensitivity of UU. It can promote the accurate detection of UU, providing a more scientific basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Breed selection alters the coevolution of plant–microbiome associations that have developed over long periods of natural evolution. We investigated the effects of breed selection on the rhizosphere microbiomes and metabolites of hybrid parents (I101 and 84K) and their offspring (Q1–Q5) using metagenomics and untargeted metabolomics. Rhizosphere archaeal, bacterial and fungal community β-diversity significantly differed among hybrid parents and offspring, but only the dominant bacterial phyla and bacterial community α-diversity revealed significant differences. Approximately 5.49%, 14.90% and 7.86% of the archaeal, bacterial and fungal species significantly differed among the poplar hybrid parents and offspring. Rhizosphere microbial functional genes and metabolites were both clustered into the following three groups: I101 and 84K; Q2 and Q4; and Q1, Q3 and Q5. Compared with the hybrid parents, 15 phytochemical compounds were enriched in the hybrid offspring and explained 7.15%, 18.24% and 6.68% of the total variation in the archaeal, bacterial and fungal community compositions, respectively. Rhizosphere metabolites significantly affected the bacterial community, rather than the archaeal and fungal communities. Our observations suggested that poplar breed selection imposed greater selection pressure on the rhizosphere bacterial community, which was mainly driven by metabolites.

Abstract Objectives Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior is a severe public health issue in adolescents. This study investigated the possible impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and analyzed psychological risk factors on adolescent NSSI. Methods A one-year follow-up study was conducted in September 2019 (Time 1) and September 2020 (Time 2) among 3588 high school students. The completed follow-up participants (N = 2527) were classified into no NSSI (negative at both time points), emerging NSSI (negative at Time 1 but positive at Time 2), and sustained NSSI (positive at both time points) subgroups according to their NSSI behaviors before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Perceived family functioning, perceived school climate, negative life events, personality traits (neuroticism, impulsivity, and self-control) were assessed using self-report scales. Results The data indicated an increase (10.3%) in the incidence of NSSI. Compared to no NSSI subjects, the emerging NSSI and sustained NSSI subgroups had lower perceived family functioning, higher neuroticism, higher impulse-system but lower self-control scores, and more negative life events. Logistic regressions revealed that after controlling for demographics, neuroticism and impulse-system levels at Time 1 positively predicted emerging NSSI behavior, and similarly, higher neuroticism and impulsivity and lower self-control at Time 1 predicted sustained NSSI behavior. Conclusions These findings highlighted the aggravated impact of the COVID-19 on NSSI, and suggested that individual neuroticism, impulsivity, and self-control traits might be crucial for the development of NSSI behavior among adolescent students.

HNS-IV (Hexanitrostilbene-IV) is the main charge of the exploding foil initiators (EFI), and the microstructure of the HNS will directly affect its density, flowability, sensitivity, and stability. HNS microspheres were prepared using droplet microfluidics, and the particle size, morphology, specific surface area, thermal performance, and ignition threshold of the HNS microspheres were characterized and tested. The results shown that the prepared HNS microspheres have high sphericity, with an average particle size of 20.52 μm (coefficient of variation less than 0.2), and a specific surface area of 21.62 m2/g (6.87 m2/g higher than the raw material). Without changing the crystal structure and thermal stability of HNS-IV, this method significantly enhances the sensitivity of HNS-IV to short pulses and reduces the ignition threshold of the slapper detonator to below 1000 V. This will contribute to the miniaturization and low cost of EFI.

Lipid content has an important effect on rice eating quality, but the effects of fertilizer application rate on the lipid synthesis and eating quality of rice are not well understood. Potassium (K) has a strong influence on rice quality and the requirement for K fertilizer in rice is greater than for nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers. To investigate the effects of K fertilizer on the lipid synthesis and eating quality of rice, we used Nanjing 9108 (NJ9108, japonica) and IR72 (indica) rice as experimental materials and four K levels: K0 (0 kg ha–1), K1 (90 kg ha–1), K2 (135 kg ha–1) and K3 (180 kg ha–1). The results showed that the lipid content, free fatty acid (FFA) content, unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) content, malonyl-CoA (MCA) content, phosphatidic acid (PA) content, lipid synthesis-related enzyme activities and eating quality first increased and then decreased with increasing K in both cultivars. The maximum values were obtained under K2. However, the saturated fatty acid (SFA) content showed the opposite trend. No significant differences were found in pyruvate (PYR) content among the K treatments. The protein and oxaloacetic acid (OAA) contents and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase) activity of NJ9108 first decreased and then increased with increasing K, and the minimum values were obtained under K2; while IR72 showed the opposite trend and the maximum values were obtained under K1. Overall, increasing K optimized the fatty acid components and increased the lipid content and eating quality of rice by enhancing lipid synthesis-related enzyme activities and regulating substrate competition for lipid and protein synthesis. The optimal K application rate for lipid synthesis, eating quality and grain yield was 135 kg ha–1 for both cultivars.

Abstract Background The miR-208 gene is one of the microRNAs now under active studies, and has been found to play significant roles in an array of cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, until now, no studies have examined the relationship between the susceptibility to ischemic stroke (IS) and genetic variations in miR-208. This study explored the association between the miR-208 polymorphisms (rs178642, rs8022522, and rs12894524) and the risk of IS. Methods A total of 205 cases of IS and 211 control subjects were included. The SNPscans genotyping test was employed to determine the genotypes of the three polymorphisms. Results Significant correlation was observed between rs8022522 polymorphism and risk of IS on the basis of analyses of genotypes, models and alleles (GA vs. GG: adjusted OR = 2.159, 95% CI: 1.052–4.430, P = 0. 036; AA vs. GG: adjusted OR = 5.154, 95% CI: 1.123–23.660, P = 0.035; dominant model: adjusted OR = 1.746, 95% CI, 1.075–2.838, P = 0.025; G vs. A: adjusted OR = 2.451, 95% CI: 1.374–4.370, P = 0.002). Conclusions The rs8022522 polymorphism of the miR-208 gene is significantly associated with an elevated risk of ischemic stroke in Chinese.
