Systematic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and the accompanying sepsis pose a huge threat to human health worldwide. Heparin is a part of the standard supportive care for the disease. However, the molecular mechanism is not fully understood yet, and the potential signaling pathways that play key roles have not yet been elucidated. In this paper, the main findings regarding the molecular mechanisms associated with the beneficial effects of heparin, including inhibiting HMGB-1-driven inflammation reactions, histone-induced toxicity, thrombo-inflammatory response control and the new emerging mechanisms are concluded. To set up the link between the preclinical research and the clinical effects, the outcomes of the clinical trials are summarized. Then, the structure and function relationship of heparin is discussed. By providing an updated analysis of the above results, the paper highlights the feasibility of heparin as a possible alternative for sepsis prophylaxis and therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cough is one of the most common symptoms in the post-COVID syndrome, often occurring alongside other symptoms such as back pain, fatigue, and dyspnea. Case presentation: A 60-yearold female experienced chronic cough and back pain after recovering from COVID-19. She underwent 3 sessions of cupping and acupuncture therapy and made a full recovery. Discussions: We have found that cupping therapy is an effective treatment for post-COVID cough. The appearance of blisters during cupping is a normal occurrence and may even enhance the therapeutic effects. Therefore, it should not be considered malpractice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes the use of digital knitting to fabricate three-dimensional stretchable fabric with transformative properties. The research focus is on the application of the curling effect and the resultant stitch structures. Rib, purl, and links structures, which have alternating face and back loops in the structural knit cell and produced the curling effect, are investigated. Thirty-six samples based on the three structures along with 12 different stitch combinations are produced through the digital knitting process. The properties of the samples, including the dimensional changes, surface texture, weight and thickness, and tensile properties, are subsequently evaluated and compared by using both quantitative and qualitative assessment methods. The results show that the developed knitted fabrics that use the curling effect through alternating face and back loops are significantly three-dimensional in surface texture and have considerable stretchability. These effects in general increase with the growth of stitch number in a structural knit cell. However, only the links structures show considerable extensibility along both course and wale directions, while the rib and purl structures have enhanced stretchability in only the course and wale directions, respectively. Therefore, this design-led textile study provides a simple but effective means for producing new materials that offer both function and aesthetics for fashion with transformable designs. Low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) are produced by chemical or enzymatic depolymerization of unfractionated heparin (UFH). Besides their well-known anticoagulant effects, LMWHs have also been reported to exhibit numerous anti-inflammatory properties. Previous studies have, however, shown that different production processes result in unique structural characteristics of LMWHs. The structural variations may help explain the different therapeutic spectrums in disease treatment for non-anticoagulant effects. In the present review, we summarize major advances in understanding and exploiting the anti-inflammatory disorder activities of LMWHs, based on mechanistic studies, preclinical experiments and clinical trials. We highlight differences in these activities of commercially available LMWHs produced using different manufacturing processes. We stress the importance of structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies on the non-anticoagulant effects of LMWHs and discuss strategies for exploring new clinical indications. Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy of acupuncture artery technique at Zusanli (ST 36) for Wagner grade 0 diabetic foot., Methods: Sixty patients with Wagner grade 0 diabetic foot were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, with 30 patients in each group. Both groups selected bilateral Zusanli (ST 36). In the control group, the needle was inserted about 10 mm under ultrasound guidance to avoid blood vessels in the Zusanli (ST 36) area, with needle retention for 5 min without manipulation. In the observation group, the needle was inserted about 25 mm under ultrasound guidance to the anterior tibial artery branch below Zusanli (ST 36), followed by lifting and thrusting manipulation for 5 min before withdrawing the needle. Both groups were treated twice a week for 4 weeks. The traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome scores were observed; infrared thermography was used to measure the temperature difference between the left and right sides in four areas, i.e. the medial malleolus, lateral malleolus, and upper and lower parts of the sole of the foots; Doppler ultrasound was used to measure the logarithm of the peak systolic velocity (ln PS) and the logarithm of the time average maximum velocity (ln TAMAX) of the anterior tibial artery below the right Zusanli (ST 36); the ankle-brachial index (ABI) was measured using Doppler blood flow detector and blood pressure monitor before treatment, after the first treatment, and at the end of treatment. Clinical efficacy was compared between the two groups., Results: Compared before treatment, the TCM syndrome scores in both groups were reduced after the first treatment and at the end of treatment ( P <0.01, P <0.05), and the scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group ( P <0.01). In the observation group, compared before treatment, the maximum, minimum, and average temperature differences between the left and right sides of the upper and lower parts of the sole of the foots, medial malleolus, and lateral malleolus were reduced after the first treatment and at the end of treatment ( P <0.05, P <0.01). After the first treatment, the maximum temperature difference between the left and right sides of the upper part of the sole of the foots and the medial malleolus in the observation group was lower than that in the control group ( P <0.05). At the end of treatment, except for the average temperature difference of the medial malleolus, the maximum, minimum, and average temperature differences between the left and right sides of the upper and lower parts of the sole of the foots, medial malleolus, and lateral malleolus in the observation group were lower than those in the control group ( P <0.01, P <0.05). After the first treatment and at the end of treatment, the ln PS, ln TAMAX, and ABI of the anterior tibial artery below the right Zusanli (ST 36) in the observation group were higher than those before treatment ( P <0.01) and higher than those in the control group ( P <0.01). The total effective rate in the observation group was 96.7% (29/30), higher than 3.3% (1/30) in the control group ( P <0.05)., Conclusion: Acupuncture artery technique at Zusanli (ST 36) could effectively improve the clinical symptoms of patients with Wagner grade 0 diabetic foot, increase blood flow velocity in the lower limb vessels, and reduce the temperature difference between the left and right lower limbs.

With regard to identifying the effective components of LMWH drugs curing hepatic fibrosis disease, we carried out a comparative study on the efficacy of enzymatically depolymerized LMWHs on CCl 4 induced mouse liver fibrosis. The results showed that the controlled enzymatic depolymerization conditions resulted in LMWHs with significantly different activities. The LMWH product depolymerized by Heparinase I (I-11) with a Mw of 7160, exhibited a significant advantage in reducing the liver inflammation by suppressing TNF-α and IL-1β secretion, and minimizing hepatic fibrogenesis. The products prepared by only Heparinase II (II-11), and combined Heparinase III and II (III-II-5) showed limited positive effect on hepatic inflammation and fibrosis. On the contrary, the products by combined Heparinase III and I (III-I-9, III-I-5) showed no effect or stimulation effect on the hepatic fibrogenesis. Our results provided the basis for structure-activity relationship insight for inhibition of liver fibrosis activities of LMWHs, which might have significant implications for generic anti-fibrosis disease drug development.
