Using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculation, we have studied the bulk and surface electronic structure of metallic rutile 5d transition metal oxide IrO2 that harbors both edge and corner sharing Ir-O octahedrons. We observe strong modulation of the band structure by spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The measured band structure is well reproduced by our ab initio calculation without band renormalization, suggesting the absence of the SOC-enhanced correlation effect in IrO2. In accordance with the calculation, we visualize two types of Dirac nodal lines (DNLs) protected by mirror symmetry and nonsymmorphic crystal symmetry, respectively. SOC gaps the first type of DNLs, which may contribute largely to the strong spin Hall effect. The second type of DNLs at the edges of Brillouin zone, however, remain intact against SOC. Our results not only provide important insights into the exotic transport properties of IrO2, but also shed light on the understanding of the role of SOC in the iridate family.

The recent discovery of the extreme magnetoresistance (XMR) in the nonmagnetic rare-earth monopnictides LaX (X = P, As, Sb, Bi,), a recently proposed new topological semimetal family, has inspired intensive research effort in the exploration of the correlation between the XMR and their electronic structures. In this work, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the three-dimensional band structure of LaBi, we unraveled its topologically nontrivial nature with the observation of multiple topological surface Dirac fermions, as supported by our ab initio calculations. Furthermore, we observed substantial imbalance between the volume of electron and hole pockets, which rules out the electron-hole compensation as the primary cause of the XMR in LaBi.

Topological insulators represent unusual topological quantum states, typically with gapped bulk band structure but gapless surface Dirac fermions protected by time-reversal symmetry. Recently, a distinct kind of topological insulator resulting from nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry was proposed in the KHgX (X=As, Sb, Bi) compounds. Unlike regular topological crystalline insulators, the nonsymmorphic glide-reflection symmetry in KHgX guarantees the appearance of an exotic surface fermion with hourglass shape dispersion (where two pairs of branches switch their partners) residing on its (010) side surface, contrasting to the usual two-dimensional Dirac fermion form. Here, by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the electronic structures of KHgSb on both (001) and (010) surfaces and reveal the unique in-gap surface states on the (010) surface with delicate dispersion consistent with the "hourglass Fermion" recently proposed. Our experiment strongly supports that KHgSb is a nonsymmorphic topological crystalline insulator with hourglass fermions, which serves as an important step to the discovery of unique topological quantum materials and exotic fermions protected by nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry.

Topological Weyl semimetal (TWS), a new state of quantum matter, has sparked enormous research interest recently. Possessing unique Weyl fermions in the bulk and Fermi arcs on the surface, TWSs offer a rare platform for realizing many exotic physical phenomena. TWSs can be classified into type-I that respect Lorentz symmetry and type-II that do not. Here, we directly visualize the electronic structure of MoTe2, a recently proposed type-II TWS. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we unravel the unique surface Fermi arcs, in good agreement with our ab initio calculations that have nontrivial topological nature. Our work not only leads to new understandings of the unusual properties discovered in this family of compounds, but also allows for the further exploration of exotic properties and practical applications of type-II TWSs, as well as the interplay between superconductivity (MoTe2 was discovered to be superconducting recently) and their topological order.

The Shexiang Zhuifeng Zhitong Ointment with the effects of dispelling wind, removing dampness, dissipating cold, and relieving pain is used for treating arthralgia, muscular pain, and sprain pain caused by cold-dampness obstruction. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Shexiang Zhuifeng Zhitong Ointment in relieving the pain due to knee osteoarthritis(syndrome of cold-dampness obstruction), a randomized, double-blind, parallel controlled, multicenter clinical trial was conducted. The stratified randomization method was used to randomize the 240 subjects into a treatment group and a control group in a ratio of 1∶1. In each group, 60 patients received external application for 12 h and the other 60 patients received external application for 6 h. The treatment group received external application of Shexiang Zhuifeng Zhitong Ointment, while the control group received external application of Shexiang Zhuifeng Ointment. The treatment lasted for 21 days in both groups. Follow-up was conducted on days 7, 14, and 21 of treatment. The results based on the full analysis set were as follows.(1)In visual analog scale(VAS) score, the mean difference in the VAS score between baseline and 12 h post-treatment was 3.02 in the treatment group and 2.31 in the control group, with a significant difference(P<0.05). The mean difference in the VAS score between baseline and 6 h post-treatment was 3.19 in the treatment group and 2.48 in the control group, with a significant difference(P<0.05).(2)Response rate in terms of VAS score, after treatment for 12 h, the response rate was 93.22% in the treatment group and 73.33% in the control group, with a significant difference(P<0.05). After treatment for 6 h, theresponse rate in the treatment group was 88.33%, which was higher than that(63.33%) in the control group(P<0.05).The results showed that Shexiang Zhuifeng Zhitong Ointment applied for 12 and 6 h effectively relieved the knee joint pain of patients with knee osteoarthritis due to cold-dampness obstruction, as demonstrated by the reduced VAS score, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index(WOMAC), stiffness, and joint function score. Moreover, Shexiang Zhuifeng Zhitong Ointment outperformed the positive control Shexiang Zhuifeng Ointment in terms of reducing the VAS score, demonstrating a definitetherapeutic effect on the pain due to knee osteoarthritis(syndrome of cold-dampness obstruction).In addition, Shexiang Zhuifeng Zhitong Ointment did not cause other adverse reactions except for mild allergic reactions, which were common in the external application of traditional Chinese medicine plasters on the skin, inseveral patients.Neither other adverse reactions nor abnormalities of liver and kidney functions and electrocardiogram were observed. This ointment had high safety and could be popularized in clinical application.

Previous epidemiological and animal studies have showed the lipid metabolic disruption of antimicrobial triclocarban (TCC) and triclosan (TCS). However, the present in vivo researches were mainly devoted to the hepatic lipid metabolism, while the evidence about the impacts of TCC/TCS on the adipose tissue is very limited and the potential mechanism is unclear, especially the molecular initiation events. Moreover, little is known about the toxic difference between TCC and TCS. This study aimed to demonstrate the differential adipogenic activity of TCC/TCS as well as the potential molecular mechanism via peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARα/β/γ). The in vitro experiment based on 3T3-L1 cells showed that TCC/TCS promoted the differentiation of preadipocytes into mature adipocytes at nanomolar to micromolar concentrations, which was approach to their human exposure levels. We revealed for the first time by reporter gene assay that TCC could activate three PPARs signaling pathways in a concentration-dependent manner, while TCS only activate PPARβ. The molecular docking strategy was applied to simulate the interactions of TCC/TCS with PPARs, which explained well the different PPARs activities between TCC and TCS. TCC up-regulated the mRNA expression of three PPARs, but TCS only up-regulated PPARβ and PPARγ significantly. Meanwhile, TCC/TCS also promoted the expression of adipogenic genes targeted by PPARs to different extent. The cellular and simulating studies demonstrated that TCC exerted higher adipogenic effects and PPARs activities than TCS. Our mice in vivo experiment showed that TCC could lead to adipocyte size increase, adipocyte lipid accumulation growing, fat weight and body weight gain at human-related exposure levels, and high fat diet exacerbated these effects. Moreover, male mice tended to be more susceptible to TCC induced obesogenic effect than female mice. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common disease that affects the quality of life of middle-aged and older men. We investigated the therapeutical effects of Chengshi Beixie Fenqing Decoction (CBFD), a classic traditional Chinese medicine prescription, on BPH through in vivo model and network pharmacology. Bioactives in CBFD were detected through UPLC-Q-Tof-MS/MS and GC-MS, and filtered by the modified Lipinski's rule. Target proteins associated with the filtered compounds and BPH are selected from public databases. Venn diagram identified the overlapping target proteins between the bioactives-interacted target proteins and the BPH-targeted proteins. The bioactive-protein interactive networking of BPH was analyzed through the KEGG pathway on STRING to identify potential ligand-target and visualized the rich factors on the R packet. After that, the molecular docking test (MDT) was performed between bioactives and target proteins. It showed that the mechanism of CBFD against BPH was related to 104 signaling pathways of 42 compounds. AKT1, 6-demethyl-4'-methyl- N -methylcoclaurine and relaxin signaling pathways were selected as a hub target, key bioactivitie and hub signaling pathway, respectively. In addition, three major compounds, 6-demethyl-4'-methyl- N -methylcoclaurine, isoliensinine and liensinine, had the highest affinity on MDT for the three crucial target proteins, AKT1, JUN and MAPK1. These proteins were associated with the relaxin signaling pathway, which regulated the level of nitric oxide and is implicated in both BPH development and CBFD. We concluded that the three key bioactivities found in Plumula nelumbinis of CBFD may contribute to improving BPH condition by activating the relaxin signaling pathways.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Background and Purpose: Physical rehabilitation plays an important role in the recovery of motor function after a stroke. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Tai Chi Yunshou (TCY), a form of physical therapy, on upper-limb function and balance in stroke survivors., Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL and five Chinese databases were retrieved from inception to July 1, 2020 (updated on March 31, 2022). Randomized controlled trials of TCY versus no-treatment for stroke were included. The RoB-2 was used to evaluate the quality of included studies. Upper-limb motor impairment, balance, and activities of daily living (ADLs) were measured by Fugl-Meyer Assessment Upper Extremity Scale (FMA-UE), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Barthel Index (BI), respectively. Data synthesis was performed using RevMan (v5.3), and expressed as mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI)., Results: Seven studies with 529 participants were included. Compared with no-treatment, TCY improved FMA-UE (MD = 7.31, 95% CI: 5.86-8.77, minimal clinically important difference [MCID]: 9-10), BBS (MD = 4.68, 95% CI: 0.28-9.07, MCID: 4), and BI (MD = 4.12, 95% CI: 3.28-4.96, MCID: 1.85) in stroke survivors., Conclusion: TCY may benefit balance and ADLs in rehabilitation after a stroke, but it may not improve upper-limb function clinically., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. Triclosan (TCS) and triclocarban (TCC) have become ubiquitous pollutants detected in human body with concentrations up to hundreds of nanomolar levels. Previous studies about the hepatic lipid accumulation induced by TCS and TCC were focused on pollutant itself, which showed weak or no effects. High-fat diet (HFD), as a known environmental factor contributing to lipid metabolism-related disorders, its synergistic action with environmental pollutants deserves concern. The present study aimed to demonstrate the combined effects and potential molecular mechanisms of TCS and TCC with HFD at cellular and animal levels. The in vitro studies showed that TCC and TCS alone had negligible impact on lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells but induced lipid deposition at nanomolar levels when co-exposure with fatty acid. TCC exhibited much higher induction effects than TCS, which was related to their differential regulatory roles in adipogenic-related genes expression. The in vivo studies showed that TCC had little influence on hepatic lipid accumulation in mice fed with normal diet (ND) but could exacerbate the lipid accumulation in mice fed with HFD. Meanwhile, TCC-induced dyslipidemia in mice fed with HFD was more significant than that fed with ND. Therefore, we speculated that TCC might increase the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and atherosclerosis in HFD humans. Molecular mechanism studies showed that TCC and TCS could bind to and activate estrogen-related receptor α (ERRα) and ERRγ as well as regulate their expression. TCC had higher activity on ERRα and ERRγ than TCS, which explained partly the differential regulatory roles of two receptors in the lipid accumulation induced by TCC and TCS. Chiral materials have attracted significant research interests as they exhibit intriguing physical properties, such as chiral optical response, spin-momentum locking, and chiral induced spin selectivity. Recently, layered transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-TaS_{2} has been found to host a chiral charge density wave (CDW) order. Nevertheless, the physical consequences of the chiral order, for example, in electronic structures and the optical properties, are yet to be explored. Here, we report the spectroscopic visualization of an emergent chiral electronic band structure in the CDW phase, characterized by windmill-shaped Fermi surfaces. We uncover a remarkable chirality-dependent circularly polarized Raman response due to the salient in-plane chiral symmetry of CDW, although the ordinary circular dichroism vanishes. Chiral Fermi surfaces and anomalous Raman responses coincide with the CDW transition, proving their lattice origin. Our Letter paves a path to manipulate the chiral electronic and optical properties in two-dimensional materials and explore applications in polarization optics and spintronics.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China(CPC), the CPC and the government have highligh-ted the development of traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) and issued a series of policies, such as the Plan for Protection and Deve-lopment of Chinese Medicinal Materials(2015-2020) forwarded by the General Office of the State Council in 2015, the Plan for Healthy Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine(2015-2020) released by the General Office of the State Council in the same year, the Healthy China 2030 Plan published by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council in 2016, the Law of the People's Republic of China on Traditional Chinese Medicine which took effect on July 2017, On the Preservation and Innovative Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine promulgated by CPC Central Committee and the State Council in 2019, and Plan for the Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine during the 14th Five-Year Plan Period of China released by the General Office of the State Council in March 2022, to promote the development of the TCM industry, which have brought historical opportunities to the TCM industry. However, TCM industry faces various challenges in the development. In terms of drug development in TCM, the current studies mainly focused on the chemical research and technical requests, which neglected TCM characteristics and cased in conformity between new drug transformation of TCM and clinical practice. Therefore, a more considerable and profound authoritative guideline is needed, and innovative thought and research are necessary for academics and the industry. Through the investigation of the development TCM industry in recent years, this study summarized the policies on and trends of Chinese medicinal materials, new drug development in TCM, catalogue of national basic drugs, and national basic health insurance, and proposed suggestions for further development of TCM industry.

Niclosamide (NIC), a helminthic drug used widely for controlling schistosomiasis, can reportedly disrupt the endocrine system. However, its underlying mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we revealed the potential endocrine disruption mechanism of NIC by activating estrogen receptors (ERs) and estrogen-related receptors (ERRs). The binding potency of NIC with ERα, ERβ and ERRγ were determined by fluorescence competitive binding assays, which shows an IC 50 (the concentration of NIC needed to displace 50 % of the probe from the receptor) of 90 ± 4.1, 10 ± 1.7 nM and 0.59 ± 0.07 nM respectively. The IC 50 for ERRγ is the lowest one among the three detected receptors, which is three orders of magnitude lower than the known agonist GSK4716.The transcriptional activities of NIC on ERs and ERRs were detected by MVLN cells (stably transfected with ERs reporter gene) and HeLa cells (transiently transfected with ERRs reporter gene)-based luciferase reporter gene assay. The lowest observable effective concentration (LOEC) ranked as follows: ERRγ (0.5 nM) < ERRα (10 nM) < ERs (100 nM). The maximum observed induction rate for ERRγ (294 %) was higher than that for ERRα (191 %). The maximum observed induction rate of NIC for ERs was 30 % relative to 17β-estradiol. In addition, we simulated the interactions of NIC with ERs and ERRs by molecular docking. NIC could dock into the ligand binding pockets of ERs and ERRs and form hydrogen bonds with different amino acids. The binding energy ranked as follows: ERRγ (-8.90 kcal/mol) < ERβ (-7.57 kcal/mol) < ERRα (-7.15 kcal/mol) < ERα (-6.53 kcal/mol), which implied that NIC bound to ERRγ with higher binding affinity than the other receptors. Overall, we clarify that ERRγ might be the dominant target for NIC in cells rather than ERRα and ERs. Background/objective: In recent years, the noble gas argon (Ar) has been extensively studied for its organ protection properties. While mounting in vitro and in vivo evidence indicates that argon provides neuroprotection in ischemic brain injury, its neuroprotective potential in traumatic brain injury (TBI) has not been evaluated in vivo. We tested the hypothesis that prolonged inhalation of 70% or 79% argon for 24 h after closed-head injury (CHI) improves neurologic outcome and overall recovery at 36 days post-injury. We also compared effects of the 30% or 21% residual oxygen on argon's potential neuroprotective capacity., Methods: Adult male C57/black mice (n = 240) were subjected to closed-head traumatic brain injury, followed by inhalation of 70% argon or nitrogen (30% oxygen), or 79% argon or nitrogen (21% oxygen) for 24 h. Neurologic outcome (rotarod, neuroscore, and Morris water maze) was evaluated for up to 36 days post-injury. Histologic parameters of neurologic degeneration (Fluoro-Jade staining) and inflammation (F4/80 microglia immunostaining) were assessed in subgroups at 24 h and on post-injury day 7., Results: Our CHI protocol consistently resulted in significant brain injury. After argon inhalation for 24 h at either concentration, mice did not show significant improvement with regard to neuroscores, rotarod performance, Morris water maze performance, or overall recovery (body weight), compared to nitrogen controls, up to 36 days. At 7 days post-injury, histologic markers of neurodegeneration and inflammation, particularly in the hippocampus, consistently demonstrated significant injury. Notably, recovery was reduced in mice treated with the higher oxygen concentration (30%) after CHI compared to 21%., Conclusions: Prolonged argon treatment did not improve neurologic outcome, overall recovery (weight), nor markers of neurodegeneration or neuroinflammation after significant CHI compared to nitrogen. While neuroprotective in predominately ischemic injury, argon did not provide protection after TBI in this model, highlighting the crucial importance of assessing argon's strengths and weaknesses in preclinical models to fully understand its organ protective potential in different pathologies and gas mixtures.

To scientifically evaluate the intervention effect of Chinese medicine preventive administration(combined use of Huo-xiang Zhengqi Oral Liquid and Jinhao Jiere Granules) on community population in the case of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19), a large cohort, prospective, randomized, and parallel-controlled clinical study was conducted. Total 22 065 subjects were included and randomly divided into 2 groups. The non-intervention group was given health guidance only, while the traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) intervention group was given two coordinated TCM in addition to health guidance. The medical instructions were as follows. Huoxiang Zhengqi Oral Liquid: oral before meals, 10 mL/time, 2 times/day, a course of 5 days. Jinhao Jiere Granules: dissolve in boiling water and take after meals, 8 g/time, 2 times/day, a course of 5 days, followed up for 14 days, respectively. The study found that with the intake of medication, the incidence rate of TCM intervention group was basically maintained at a low and continuous stable level(0.01%-0.02%), while the non-intervention group showed an overall trend of continuous growth(0.02%-0.18%) from 3 to 14 days. No suspected or confirmed COVID-19 case occurred in either group. There were 2 cases of colds in the TCM intervention group and 26 cases in the non-intervention group. The incidence of colds in the TCM intervention group was significantly lower(P&lt;0.05) than that in the non-intervention group. In the population of 16-60 years old, the incidence rate of non-intervention and intervention groups were 0.01% and 0.25%, respectively. The difference of colds incidence between the two groups was statistically significant(P&lt;0.05). In the population older than 60 years old, they were 0.04% and 0.21%, respectively. The incidence of colds in the non-intervention group was higher than that in the intervention group, but not reaching statistical difference. The protection rate of TCM for the whole population was 91.8%, especially for the population of age 16-60(95.0%). It was suggested that TCM intervention(combined use of Huoxiang Zhengqi Oral Liquid and Jinhao Jiere Granules) could effectively protect community residents against respiratory diseases, such as colds, which was worthy of promotion in the community. In addition, in terms of safety, the incidence of adverse events and adverse reactions in the TCM intervention group was relatively low, which was basically consistent with the drug instructions.

Objective: To analyze the composition and differences of amenable mortality in urban and rural areas in China, 2010 and 2017. Methods: With the national mortality rates in 2010 and 2017 calculated by the National Bureau of Statistics and the National Health Commission as the reference, the underreporting rate from diseases was adjusted in combination with the cause-of-death surveillance data published by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and Center for Health Statistics and Information, National Health Commission. Age-standardized mortality was calculated by using a direct method based on the population census in 2010. Differences of the mortality in two years were compared, and the proportion of amenable mortality of different diseases in the total amenable mortality was calculated. Results: In 2010 and 2017, the age-standardized total mortality of non-communicable diseases was 536.4/100 000 and 493.6/100 000, respectively. The age-standardized amenable mortality rates were 107.6/100 000 and 96.0/100 000, respectively. Compared with 2010, the mortality of four major non-communicable diseases declined in 2017. The fastest declined amenable mortality was in with an average annual growth rate of -5.6%, followed by chronic respiratory diseases (-2.5%). Among the 11 subdivided non-communicable diseases, the age-standardized mortality of hypertension, chronic rheumatic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease declined, with an average annual growth rate of -6.7%, -5.8% and -3.0%, respectively. The proportion of amenable mortality from cerebrovascular disease was the highest among the 11 subdivided non-communicable diseases in 2010 and 2017, from 52.4% to 47.2%, followed by ischemic heart disease with an increase from 27.4% to 34.5%. Conclusion: Compared with that in 2010, the amenable mortality of non-communicable chronic diseases in urban and rural areas in China declined in 2017, of which cerebrovascular disease and ischemic heart disease account for more than 80%.

Anaerobic hydrolysis of food wastes sourced from bakery (T1), Chinese restaurant (T2), western-style restaurant (T3), and wet market (T4) were performed in leach bed reactors under the scheme of acidogenic off-gas reuse in methanogenic reactor. Results showed that food waste in T3 achieved the highest hydrogen production of 61.0 L/kg·VS added . Highest activity of hydrogenase in both leachate and digestate samples confirmed the superior performance of H 2 production in T3. Mixed acid fermentation with domination of acetate and butyrate was observed in all four treatments, whereas variations in quantification and speciation of the acidogenic products were closely related to the composition of substrates. High volatile solids (VS) removal (76.7%) was observed in T3 while VS reduction rates of the other treatments ranged from 37 to 55%. High COD production of 0.65 gCOD /g·VS added together with the reuse of elevated acidogenic off-gas ensured the highest specific CH 4 production of 0.42 L/g·VS added in T3., (Copyright © 2019. This paper first reports on the selective separation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) (acetic and hexanoic acids) using polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) containing quaternary ammonium and phosphonium ionic liquids (ILs) as the carrier. The affecting parameters such as IL content, VFA concentration, and the initial pH of the feed solution as well as the type and concentration of the stripping solution were investigated. PIMs performed a much higher selective separation performance toward hexanoic acid. The optimal PIM composed of 60 wt% quaternary ammonium IL with the permeability coefficients for acetic and hexanoic acid of 0.72 and 4.38 µm s -1 , respectively, was determined. The purity of hexanoic acid obtained in the stripping solution increased with an increase in the VFA concentration of the feed solution and decreasing HCl concentration of the stripping solution. The use of Na 2 CO 3 as the stripping solution and the involvement of the electrodialysis process could dramatically enhance the transport efficiency of both VFAs, but the separation efficiency decreased sharply. Furthermore, a coordinating mechanism containing hydrogen bonding and ion exchange for VFA transport was demonstrated. The highest purity of hexanoic acid (89.3%) in the stripping solution demonstrated that this PIM technology has good prospects for the separation and recovery of VFAs from aqueous solutions.

Surface Fermi arcs (SFAs), the unique open Fermi-surfaces (FSs) discovered recently in topological Weyl semimetals (TWSs), are unlike closed FSs in conventional materials and can give rise to many exotic phenomena, such as anomalous SFA-mediated quantum oscillations, chiral magnetic effects, three-dimensional quantum Hall effect, non-local voltage generation and anomalous electromagnetic wave transmission. Here, by using in-situ surface decoration, we demonstrate successful manipulation of the shape, size and even the connections of SFAs in a model TWS, NbAs, and observe their evolution that leads to an unusual topological Lifshitz transition not caused by the change of the carrier concentration. The phase transition teleports the SFAs between different parts of the surface Brillouin zone. Despite the dramatic surface evolution, the existence of SFAs is robust and each SFA remains tied to a pair of Weyl points of opposite chirality, as dictated by the bulk topology.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between neck circumference and metabolic syndrome in Chinese residents and to explore the cut-off points of neck circumference for metabolic syndrome in different age groups., Methods: In all, 4227 Chinese adults (18-90 y) were enrolled in the study and divided into 3 subgroups (young, middle-aged, and elderly) according to their ages. The compared data for the subjects included anthropometric indicators and biochemical detection indices. Neck circumference was compared with other simple anthropometric indices using receiver operating characteristic curves., Results: (1) In all, 362 of the subjects who were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome were young (16.8%), 428 were middle-aged (36.9%), and 485 were elderly people (53.1%). (2) The areas under the curve of neck circumference for metabolic syndrome for the 3 subgroups, young, middle-aged, and elderly, for males were 0.853, 0.792, and 0.828, respectively, and these values were 0.859, 0.780, and 0.725 for females, respectively. (3) Neck circumference cut-offs were 39.05, 39.45, and 38.90 cm in men and 34.15, 33.55, and 33.95 cm in women., Conclusions: Neck circumference contributed to determining metabolic syndrome risk beyond the classical anthropometric indices among different age groups in China., (Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

This study investigated the effects of 12.6psi (T1), 6.3psi (T2), 3.3psi (T3) and ambient (T4) headspace pressure on the metabolic pathways in the acidogenic leach bed reactor (LBR) and overall methane recovery during two-phase anaerobic digestion of food waste. Diversion of biogas from LBR enhanced COD and soluble product generation in T2, T3 and T4 whereas, high pressure (T1) resulted in comparatively higher lactate production and low protein degradation. A pressure of 3-6psi (T2 and T3) improved the production of COD by ∼22-36%, soluble products by ∼9-43%, volatile solid reduction by ∼14-19%, and CH 4 production by ∼10-31% compared with control. Besides, ∼3-6psi headspace pressure positively influenced the composition of soluble products resulting in enhanced methane recovery adding advantage to the two-phase system. A headspace pressure of ∼3-6psi is recommended to enhance the hydrolysis-acidogenesis; however, the actual hydrogen concentration should be considered., (Copyright © 2017. Objective: To explore the application of nasolabial fold wrapped perforator flap in one-stage repair of nasal alar full-thickness defects after external nasal tumor resection. Method: Fifteen csaes of alar full-thickness defects after external nasal tumor resection were repaired with the nasolabial fold wrapped perforator flaps in a one-stage procedure. We detected the blood vessel distribution and exit of the blood vessel with Doppler Ultrasonography before these surgeries，and designed the nasolabial fold wrapped perforator flap according to the area and size of nasal alar defects． The flap with reasonable thickness was able to repair the both sides of defect after being trimmed properly. Meanwhile，the flap could be folded to form a local flap covered or lined with skin. We rotated and transferred the flap to repair nasal alar defect． Result: All the flaps survived and all donor sites healed primarily．After 3 to 36 months of follow-up,the color，texture and thickness of the flaps was similar to those of recipient sites．The scar in donor site was minor．There was little scab skin in the nasal cavity. The cosmetic results was satisfactory. Conclusion: The nasolabial fold wrapped perforator flap has the advantages of reliable blood supply,long pedicle flap,proper thickness,outside the skin and the inner lining. The cosmetic appearance of nose is satisfactory.There was little scab skin in the nasal cavity. Also the sensory function of the external nose was retained. In this study, the performance of a two-phase anaerobic digestion reactor treating food waste with the reutilization of acidogenic off-gas was investigated with the objective to improve the hydrogen availability for the methanogenic reactor. As a comparison a treatment without off-gas reutilization was also set up. Results showed that acidogenic off-gas utilization in the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor increased the methane recovery up to 38.6%. In addition, a 27% increase in the production of cumulative chemical oxygen demand (COD) together with an improved soluble microbial products recovery dominated by butyrate was observed in the acidogenic leach bed reactor (LBR) with off-gas reutilization. Of the increased methane recovery, ∼8% was contributed by the utilization of acidogenic off-gas in UASB. Antenatally, congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM) causing fetal hydrops can be palliated with thoracoamniotic shunts, which may become displaced in utero. We report a case of an infant born at 34 weeks gestational age with an antenatally diagnosed macrocystic lung lesion, fetal hydrops and an internally displaced thoracoamniotic shunt. The infant suffered refractory pneumothoraces despite multiple chest drains, and stabilised only after surgical resection of the lesion. Intraoperatively, the shunt was noted to form a connection between a type I CPAM and the pleural space. As the shunt was displaced internally, this complication was not immediately obvious during the initial resuscitation. In infants with large cystic lung lesions, clinicians should be aware that internally displaced thoracoamniotic shunts could contribute to refractory tension pneumothoraces and anticipate the need for advanced neonatal resuscitation, including early thoracocentesis or chest drain insertion. We report a study of the magnetic and electronic properties of the non-centrosymmetric half-Heusler antiferromagnet HoPdBi (TN = 2.0 K). Magnetotransport measurements show HoPdBi has a semimetallic behavior with a carrier concentration n = 3.7 × 10(18) cm(-3) extracted from the Shubnikov-de Haas effect. The magnetic phase diagram in the field-temperature plane has been determined by transport, magnetization, and thermal expansion measurements: magnetic order is suppressed at BM ~ 3.6 T for T --> 0. Superconductivity with Tc ~ 1.9 K is found in the antiferromagnetic phase. Ac-susceptibility measurements provide solid evidence for bulk superconductivity below Tc = 0.75 K with a screening signal close to a volume fraction of 100%. The upper critical field shows an unusual linear temperature variation with Bc2(T --> 0) = 1.1 T. We also report electronic structure calculations that classify HoPdBi as a new topological semimetal, with a non-trivial band inversion of 0.25 eV.

Effect of rumen microorganisms on hydrolysis of food waste in leach bed reactor (LBR) was investigated. LBRs were inoculated (20%, w/w) with cow manure and anaerobically digested sludge at different ratios, 0:1 (LBR-A), 1:3 (LBR-B), 1:1 (LBR-C), 3:1 (LBR-D) and 1:0 (LBR-E). High volatile solids (VS) conversion efficiency of 68% was achieved in LBR-E. Compared with LBR-A, chemical oxygen demand, total soluble products and total Kjeldahl nitrogen leaching of LBR-E were increased by 16%, 14.3% and 27%, respectively. Recovery of the highest amounts of ethanol and butyrate in LBR-E indicated that the metabolic pathway mediated by rumen microorganisms was favorable for subsequent methanogenesis. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that the enhanced hydrolysis in LBR-E was mainly due to strong degraders, e.g. Enterobacter, Bifidobacterium thermacidophilum and Caloramator sourced from cow manure. Results demonstrate that rumen microorganisms rapidly degrade the VS and produce useful VFAs with high methane yields in subsequent methanogenesis., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. This study investigated the potential of Acetobacterium woodii, a homoacetogen, in co-culture with common acetogens for acetate production during glucose fermentation. Three types of inocula, A. woodii (AW), heat-treated sludge (HTS) and co-culture of A. woodii and heat-treated sludge (AW-HTS) were investigated. Results showed that ∼ 150 mM of glucose was almost completely converted to biomass, gases and other products in co-culture. The addition of A. woodii induced homoacetogenic fermentation in AW-HTS during the first 3 days, as evidenced by the decreased hydrogen production and acetate dominance (>90%, corresponding to 1.19 mol acetate/mol glucose) in total soluble products. However, due to the unfavorable environmental conditions, metabolic pathway in AW-HTS treatment shifted towards butyrate type at the end of the experiment. Bacterial diversity analysis indicated that species supporting growth of A. woodii were dominant during the first several days and their abundance gradually decreased until the end of experiment., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a very practical subject, which has its unique theoretical system and clinical characteristics. In the course of clinical practice, the exact clinical efficacy is the key of existence and development. But the existing evaluation system is difficult to objectively evaluate the clinical efficacy of TCM. Therefore, how to objectively evaluate the clinical efficacy and get definitive evidence is the focus of the evaluation of clinical efficacy of TCM. Relative to modern medicine, TCM is more concerned about the changes of feelings and clinical symptoms of the patient in the course of the evolution of the disease. Soft targets mainly used for the evaluation of the clinical efficacy of symptoms and functional activity of the disease. The level in soft targets of processing technology is often used methods in clinical evaluation. But it has often produced the phenomenon which the results of the evaluation is mutual contradiction, which will ultimately affect the effect of evaluation of clinical efficacy of TCM. In order to better evaluate the clinical efficacy of TCM, in the process of adoption of soft targets, it clearly identify it's role, highlighting the characteristics of interventions on disease, and as much as possibly avoid the level in soft targets of processing technology to real assess clinical efficacy of TCM.

Parenterally administered Chinese medicine is widely applied in clinic. It particularly plays an important role in the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, acute infectious diseases and malignant tumors. With the expansion of the scope of the clinical application of parenterally administered Chinese medicine adverse event reports also increase day by day. Thus, parenterally administered Chinese medicine has come to the attention of management departments, medical staff and the public. By the end of 2012, the national adverse drug reaction monitoring database has collected more than 5 million adverse drug reactions/events reports. Parenterally administered Chinese medicine accounted for more than half of the total number of adverse reactions to Chinese medicine. Therefore, it is essential that epidemiological methods are used to analyze the national database for all references to parenterally administered Chinese medicine. Our research aims to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of various safety monitoring methods for parenterally administered Chinese medicine and offer guidance in safety evaluation analysis.

Melatonin signaling dysfunction has been associated with the etiology of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Genetic analysis has also associated the occurrence of AIS with the MT2 gene. Thus, we determined whether there is abnormality in the protein expression of melatonin receptors (MT) in AIS osteoblasts. In this study, we recruited 11 girls with severe AIS and eight normal subjects for intraoperative bone biopsies. MT1 and MT2 receptor protein expressions in the isolated osteoblasts were detected. Also, cell proliferation assay using different melatonin concentrations (0, 10(-9), 10(-5), 10(-4) m) was carried out. The results showed that both MT1 and MT2 receptors are expressed in osteoblasts of the controls. While MT1 receptors were expressed in osteoblasts of all AIS subjects, osteoblasts of only 7 of 11 AIS showed expression of MT2 receptors. Melatonin stimulated control osteoblasts to proliferate. However, proliferation of AIS osteoblasts without expression of MT2 receptor, after treatment with melatonin, was minimal when compared with control and AIS osteoblasts with MT2 receptor expression. The proliferation of AIS osteoblasts with MT2 receptor was greater than those without. This is the first report demonstrating a difference between AIS and normal osteoblasts in the protein expression of MT2 receptor. The results suggest that there is a possible functional effect of MT2 receptor on osteoblast proliferation. AIS osteoblasts without expression of MT2 receptor showed the lowest percentage of viable cells after melatonin treatment. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on TlBiTe2 and TlBiSe2 from a thallium-based ternary chalcogenides family revealed a single surface Dirac cone at the center of the Brillouin zone for both compounds. For TlBiSe2, the large bulk gap (∼200 meV) makes it a topological insulator with better mechanical properties than the previous binary 3D topological insualtor family. For TlBiTe2, the observed negative bulk gap indicates it as a semimetal, instead of a narrow-gap semiconductor as conventionally believed; this semimetality naturally explains its mysteriously small thermoelectric figure of merit comparing to other compounds in the family. Finally, the unique band structures of TlBiTe2 also suggest it as a candidate for topological superconductors.

Melatonin deficiency has been postulated as an etiologic factors in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). In previous studies, melatonin was shown to regulate skeletal growth and bone formation in both humans and rats. Although it remains controversial whether there are differences in serum melatonin level between AIS and control subjects, melatonin signaling pathway dysfunction in osteoblasts has been reported in patients with AIS. Recently, our group found that melatonin receptor 1B (MT2) gene polymorphism was associated with the occurrence of AIS. Hence, the present study investigated the effect of melatonin on AIS osteoblasts. In vitro assays were performed with osteoblasts isolated from 17 severe AIS girls and nine control subjects. The osteoblasts were exposed to different concentrations of melatonin for 3 days. The effects of melatonin on cell proliferation (as evidenced by MTT assay) and differentiation (demonstrated by alkaline phosphatase activity) were determined. In the control group, melatonin significantly stimulated osteoblasts to proliferate and differentiate. However, in the AIS group, the stimulatory effects of melatonin were not discernible. Importantly, this finding demonstrated that there is a significant difference between AIS and control osteoblasts in functional response toward melatonin. Melatonin-stimulated proliferation of control osteoblasts was inhibited by the MT2 antagonist, 4-phenyl-2-propionamidotetraline, as well as by luzindole, a nonselective melatonin receptor antagonist, suggesting that MT2 is associated with the proliferative action of melatonin. The lack of response in AIS osteoblasts might be because of dysfunction of the melatonin signaling pathway, which may contribute to the low bone mineral density and abnormal skeletal growth observed in patients with AIS.

Study Design: A correlation analysis between histologic grade (HG) of iliac crest apophysis and skeletal age assessments., Objective: To study the correlation between HGs of iliac crest apophysis and the skeletal age of hand and wrist, digital skeletal age (DSA), and Risser sign in the girls with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS)., Summary of Background Data: The evaluation of the remaining growth of the patients clinically and radiologically is highly significant in predicting the curve progression and thus influencing the treatment strategy in AIS., Methods: Fifty-three AIS girls with a mean age of 14.0 years undergoing corrective posterior spinal surgery and instrumentation with autogenous bone graft were recruited. Menarche status was recorded while the skeletal age of hand and wrist, DSA, and Risser grade were evaluated radiologically. Using a standardized HG of proliferative chondrocyte zone of the iliac crest apophysis, correlation between the HGs and the radiologic and clinical skeletal maturity parameters was analyzed., Results: The HGs were negatively correlated with the radiologic parameters with the highest correlation coefficient between HGs and skeletal age of hand and wrist. The negative correlation between HGs and the 2 clinical parameters was significant and could be enhanced by combining with the radiologic parameters. No proliferative chondrocyte zone of the apophysis was detected when patients were either over 16 years of skeletal age or Risser grade 5, as well as 2-year postmenarche or over 15 years of chronological age in patients with DSA stage III and Risser grade 4., Conclusion: Radiologic skeletal age of the wrist and digits can provide important information for maturity assessment in girls with AIS. It can also enhance the sensitivity of clinical parameters in determining the remaining growth potential.
