It's well-known that multiple metal elements can lead to the change of oxidative stress response levels in vivo. However, their relationship with age-related cataract (ARC) had not been well studied. We designed a case-control study including 210 individuals with ARC and 210 matched control group. The metal levels in their urine specimens were measured using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression was used to select representative metals into the multi-element model and reduce dimension. Multivariate logic analysis and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were subsequently used to explore the association of ARC risk with multiple metal elements. We found that magnesium (Mg), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), manganese (Mn), and selenium (Se) were positively associated with ARC in the single-element model. The multiple exposure model indicated a positive association between Mg and As, in which the OR in their highest quartile were 3.32 (95% CI: 1.24-8.89) and 7.09 (95% CI: 2.56-19.63). The BKMR model also showed the effect of As increased monotonically with its increasing concentration, and high levels of Mg and As had a significant positive effect on ARC risk. In conclusion, we found that exposure to multiple metals was associated with increased ARC risk. Further research is needed to verify these findings in the future.

To explore the efficacy of uterine artery embolization (UAE) in the treatment of uterine fibroid and share the experience of transvaginal fibroid expulsion (FE) after UAE.We retrospectively analyzed the changes in uterine and fibroid volume in 152 patients with symptomatic uterine fibroid after UAE at Fujian Provincial Hospital and Fujian Longyan People Hospital from March 2014 to March 2020. After a 12-month follow-up, the improvement in postoperative clinical symptoms and the incidence of complications were evaluated. We also shared the clinical features and imaging findings of four patients with FE after UAE.All 152 patients successfully underwent UAE. After a 12-month follow-up, the postoperative volumes of the uterus and fibroid at 3, 6, and 12 months were significantly reduced or disappeared compared to those before surgery (P 0.05). Clinical symptoms, such as menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, prolonged menstrual period, anemia, increased leucorrhea, pelvic discomfort, and urinary tract compression, were significantly improved after UAE. Among the 152 patients, the incidences of postoperative fever, nausea, vomiting, lower abdominal pain, and increased vaginal secretion were 7.89%, 7.24%, 3.95%, 19.08%, and 4.61%, respectively. Additionally, there were six cases of FE, with an incidence of 3.95%. Three cases of fibroid specimens and pathological images of fibroid biopsy, which were expelled through the vagina, were also provided.UAE is a satisfactory alternative surgical method for symptomatic uterine fibroid with definitive efficacy and high safety. However, it is necessary to guard against the occurrence of postoperative complications such as FE.

Background and aimsVery high levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) have been paradoxically linked to increased mortality risk. The present study aimed to examine associations of HDL-C and varied sizes of the HDL particle (HDL-P) with mortality risk stratified by hypertension.Methods and resultsThis prospective cohort study included 429 792 participants (244 866 with hypertension and 184 926 without hypertension) from the UK Biobank. During a median follow-up of 12.7 years, 23 993 (9.8%) and 8142 (4.4%) deaths occurred among individuals with and without hypertension, respectively. A U-shaped association of HDL-C with all-cause mortality was observed in individuals with hypertension after multivariable adjustment, whereas an L-shape was observed in individuals without hypertension. Compared with individuals with normal HDL-C of 50–70 mg/dL, those with very high HDL-C levels (>90 mg/dL) had a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality among individuals with hypertension (hazard ratio, 1.47; 95% confidence interval, 1.35–1.61), but not among those without hypertension (1.05, 0.91–1.22). As for HDL-P, among individuals with hypertension, a larger size of HDL-P was positively whereas smaller HDL-P was negatively associated with all-cause mortality. After additional adjustment for larger HDL-P in the model, the U-shaped association between HDL-C and mortality risk was altered to an L-shape among individuals with hypertension.ConclusionsThe increased risk of mortality associated with very high HDL-C existed only in individuals with hypertension, but not in those without hypertension. Moreover, the increased risk at high HDL-C levels in hypertension was likely driven by larger HDL-P.

BACKGROUND Although higher diet quality at mid-life has been associated with better cognitive function in late adulthood, it is unclear whether dietary improvement after mid-life may reduce the risk of cognitive impairment. OBJECTIVES We examined associations between changes in diet quality and risk of cognitive impairment in the Singapore Chinese Health Study cohort. METHODS We used data from 14,683 Chinese men and women who were recruited at ages 45 to 74 y from 1993 to 1998 and re-interviewed after 20 y at ages 61 to 96 y during follow-up 3 (2014-2016). Diet quality was measured using the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) scores at baseline and follow-up 3 interviews. Cognitive impairment was defined using scores from the Singapore-modified Mini-Mental State Examination at the follow-up 3 interview. To retrospectively compare the efficacy and safety of prostatic artery embolization (PAE) combined with transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and simple TURP in treating large (> 100 mL) benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 13 and 17 patients with large BPH who underwent TURP and PAE + TURP, respectively, from January 2016 to January 2020. Background socioeconomic inequity in mortality and life expectancy remains inconclusive in low- and middle-income countries, and to what extent the associations are mediated or modified by lifestyles remains debatable. Methods we included 21,133 adults from China Health and Nutrition Survey (1991–2011) and constructed three parameters to reflect participants’ overall individual- (synthesising income, education and occupation) and area-level (urbanisation index) socioeconomic status (SES) and lifestyles (counting the number of smoking, physical inactivity and unhealthy diet and bodyweight). HRs for mortality and life expectancy were estimated by time-dependent Cox model and life table method, respectively. Results during a median follow-up of 15.2 years, 1,352 deaths were recorded. HRs (95% CIs) for mortality comparing low versus high individual- and area-level SES were 2.38 (1.75–3.24) and 1.84 (1.51–2.24), respectively, corresponding to 5.7 (2.7–8.6) and 5.0 (3.6–6.3) life-year lost at age 50. Lifestyles explained ≤11.5% of socioeconomic disparity in mortality. Higher lifestyle risk scores were associated with higher mortality across all socioeconomic groups. HR (95% CI) for mortality comparing adults with low individual-level SES and 3–4 lifestyle risk factors versus those with high SES and 0–1 lifestyle risk factors was 7.06 (3.47–14.36), corresponding to 19.1 (2.6–35.7) life-year lost at age 50. Conclusion this is the first nationwide cohort study reporting that disadvantaged SES was associated with higher mortality and shorter life expectancy in China, which was slightly mediated by lifestyles. Risk lifestyles were related to higher mortality across all socioeconomic groups, and those with risk lifestyles and disadvantaged SES had much higher mortality risks.

Background The aim of the study was to examine the relations of individual lifestyle factors and its composite score with healthy ageing among Chinese adults. Method We included 14 159 participants aged 45–74 years at baseline from the Singapore Chinese Health Study, a population-based prospective cohort. A protective lifestyle score (0–5 scale) was calculated at baseline (1993–1998) and updated at the second follow-up visit (2006–2010) on the basis of optimal body mass index (18.5–22.9 kg/m2), healthy diet (upper 40% of the Alternative Healthy Eating Index score), being physically active (≥2 h/wk of moderate activity or ≥0.5 h/wk of strenuous activity), nonsmoking (never smoking), and low-to-moderate alcohol drinking (>0 to ≤14 drinks/wk for men and >0 to ≤7 drinks/wk for women). Healthy ageing was assessed at the third follow-up visit (2014–2016) and was defined as absence of specific chronic diseases, absence of cognitive impairment and limitations in instrumental activities of daily living, good mental and overall self-perceived health, good physical functioning, and no function-limiting pain. Results About 20.0% (2834) of the participants met the criteria of healthy ageing after a median follow-up of 20 years. Each 1-point increase in the protective lifestyle score computed at baseline and second follow-up visits was associated with higher likelihood of healthy ageing by 25% (95% CI: 20%–30%) and 24% (18%–29%), respectively. The population-attributable risk percent of adherence to 4–5 protective lifestyle factors was 34.3% (95% CI: 25.3%–42.3%) at baseline and 31.3% (23.0%–38.7%) at second follow-up visits for healthy ageing. In addition, positive increase in lifestyle scores from baseline to second follow-up visits was also significantly associated with a higher likelihood of healthy ageing with an odds ratio of 1.18 (95% CI: 1.12%–1.24%) for each increment in protective lifestyle score. Conclusions Our findings confirmed that adopting healthy lifestyle factors, even after midlife, was associated with healthy ageing at old age.

OBJECTIVE Atrial fibrillation (AF) frequently occurs in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D); however, the longitudinal associations of new-onset AF with risks of adverse health outcomes in patients with T2D remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to determine the associations of new-onset AF with subsequent risks of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), heart failure, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and mortality among patients with T2D. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We included 16,551 adults with T2D, who were free of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and CKD at recruitment from the UK Biobank study. Time-varying Cox regression models were used to assess the associations of incident AF with subsequent risks of incident ASCVD, heart failure, CKD, and mortality. RESULTS Among the patients with T2D, 1,394 developed AF and 15,157 remained free of AF during the follow-up. Over median follow-up of 10.7–11.0 years, we documented 2,872 cases of ASCVD, 852 heart failure, and 1,548 CKD and 1,776 total death (409 CVD deaths). Among patients with T2D, those with incident AF had higher risk of ASCVD (hazard ratio [HR] 1.85; 95% CI 1.59–2.16), heart failure (HR 4.40; 95% CI 3.67–5.28), CKD (HR 1.68; 95% CI 1.41–2.01), all-cause mortality (HR 2.91; 95% CI 2.53–3.34), and CVD mortality (HR 3.75; 95% CI 2.93–4.80) compared with those without incident AF. CONCLUSIONS Patients with T2D who developed AF had significantly increased risks of developing subsequent adverse cardiovascular events, CKD, and mortality. Our data underscore the importance of strategies of AF prevention to reduce macro- and microvascular complications in patients with T2D.

Background Few studies have evaluated the association between changes in diet quality from mid-life to late-life and healthy ageing. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models were applied to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between changes in DASH scores and healthy ageing. Results Compared with participants who maintained relatively stable DASH scores, a >10% decrease in DASH score was associated with a 16% (95% CI, 4–26%) lower likelihood of healthy ageing, whereas a >10% increase in DASH score was associated with a 19% (95% CI, 3–37%) higher likelihood of healthy ageing. Compared with participants who were in the low-score group consistently, participants who increased their DASH scores from moderate-score at baseline to high-score at follow-up 3 had a 53% (95% CI, 21–92%) higher likelihood of healthy ageing, whereas those who were in the high-score group consistently had 108% (95% CI, 71–152%) higher likelihood of healthy ageing. Conclusions Improving diet quality from mid- to late-life was associated with a higher likelihood of healthy ageing.

To prospectively examine the associations of combined lifestyle factors with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality in patients with diabetes.Patients with prevalent diabetes were included from 5 prospective, population-based cohorts in China (Dongfeng-Tongji cohort and Kailuan study), the United Kingdom (UK Biobank study), and the United States (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study). Healthy lifestyle scores were constructed according to non-current smoking, low to moderate alcohol drinking, regular physical activity, healthy diet, and optimal body weight; the healthy level of each lifestyle factor was assigned 1 point, or 0 for otherwise, and the range of the score was 0 to 5. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios for incident CVD, CVD mortality, and all-cause mortality adjusting for sociodemographic, medical, and diabetes-related factors, and outcomes were obtained by linkage to medical records and death registries. Data were collected from October 18, 1988, to September 30, 2020.A total of 6945 incident CVD cases were documented in 41,350 participants without CVD at baseline from the 2 Chinese cohorts and the UK Biobank during 389,330 person-years of follow-up, and 40,353 deaths were documented in 101,219 participants from all 5 cohorts during 1,238,391 person-years of follow-up. Adjusted hazard ratios (95% CIs) comparing patients with 4 or 5 vs 0 or 1 healthy lifestyle factors were 0.67 (0.60 to 0.74) for incident CVD, 0.58 (0.50 to 0.68) for CVD mortality, and 0.60 (0.53 to 0.68) for all-cause mortality. Findings remained consistent across different cohorts, subgroups, and sensitivity analyses.The international analyses document that adherence to multicomponent healthy lifestyles is associated with lower risk of CVD and premature death of patients with diabetes.

To investigate the safety and effectiveness of superselective prostatic artery embolization (PAE) in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Sixty-five patients diagnosed with BPH in Fujian Provincial Hospital between December 2014 and July 2019 were included. Patients with ineffective drug treatment after 6 months, who refused surgery, or who were unsuitable for surgery were included. We observed postoperative complications, followed up at 1, 3, and 6 months, compared clinical symptoms, and monitored changes in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and prostatic volume (PV) before and after treatment. Of the 65 patients, 58 (89.23%) successfully received PAE; 44 and 14 bilateral and unilateral embolization, respectively. Clinical efficacy was 94.83% (55/58) after the 6-month follow-up. Background and aims Obesity often initiates or coexists with certain metabolic abnormalities. This study sought to examine the independent and joint relations of weight and metabolic syndrome (MetS) with incident chronic kidney disease (CKD) among Chinese elderly people. Methods and Results A total of 15 229 participants (mean age: 62.8 years) from the Dongfeng-Tongji Cohort with complete baseline questionnaire and medical examination data were followed from 2008-2010 to 2013. All participants were categorized into four phenotypes: metabolically healthy non-overweight/obesity (MHNO), metabolically healthy overweight/obesity (MHO), metabolically unhealthy non-overweight/obesity (MUNO), metabolically unhealthy overweight/obesity (MUO). Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models were applied to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (CIs) of four phenotypes with the risk of incident CKD, which was defined as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) 60 years or with baseline diabetes. Conclusion Both overweight/obesity and MetS were associated with an increased risk of CKD. It's worth noting that MHO and MUNO also have an elevated risk. Maintaining both normal weight and healthy metabolic profile is recommended.

Systolic/diastolic blood pressure of 130 to 139/80 to 89 mm Hg has been defined as stage I hypertension by the 2017 Hypertension Clinical Practice Guidelines. Drug treatment is recommended for stage I hypertensive patients aged ≥65 years without cardiovascular disease in the 2017 Hypertension Clinical Practice Guidelines but not in the 2018 Chinese guidelines. However, the cost-effectiveness of drug treatment among this subgroup of Chinese patients is unclear. This study developed a microsimulation model to compare costs and effectiveness of drug treatment and nondrug treatment for the subgroup of stage I hypertensive patients over a lifetime horizon from a government affordability perspective. Event rates of mortality and cardiovascular complications were estimated from 3 cohorts in the Chinese population. Costs and health utilities were obtained from the national statistics report and published literature. The model predicted that drug treatment generated quality-adjusted life-years of 13.52 and associated with expected costs of $6825 in comparison with 13.81 and $7328 produced by nondrug treatment over a lifetime horizon among stage I hypertensive patients aged ≥65 years without cardiovascular disease. At a willingness-to-pay threshold of $8836/quality-adjusted life-year (the GDP per capita in 2017), drug treatment only had a 1.8% probability of being cost-effective compared with nondrug treatment after 10 000 probabilistic simulations. Sensitivity analysis of treatment costs, benefits expected from treatment, health utilities, and discount rates did not change the results. Our results suggested that drug treatment was not cost-effective compared with nondrug treatment for stage I hypertensive patients aged ≥65 years without cardiovascular disease in China.

Limited studies had investigated the potential benefits of workplace-based hypertension management programs on long-term blood pressure (BP) control and health outcomes. This study used the propensity score matching to examine the effectiveness of a workplace-based hypertension management program on BP control and risks of major adverse cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. Within the Kailuan study, a workplace-based hypertension management program was initiated in 2009 among men with hypertension, which included regular BP measuring (twice a month), free antihypertensive medications, and individualized health consultation. Participants were followed until loss to follow-up, death, or December 31, 2019. Among 17 724 male hypertensives aged 18 to 60 years, 6400 participated in the program. The propensity score matching yielded 6120 participants in the management group and 6120 participants in the control group. Both systolic and diastolic BPs were significantly lower in the management group than in the control group over follow-up, and the mean between-group difference at the 10th year was −7.83 (95% CI, −9.06 to −6.62) mm Hg for systolic BP and −4.72 (95% CI, −5.46 to −3.97) mm Hg for diastolic BP. Participants in the program were more likely to achieve BP control (odds ratio, 1.70 [95% CI, 1.41–2.06]) and had significantly lower risks of major adverse cardiovascular events (hazard ratio, 0.83 [95% CI, 0.72–0.94]) and all-cause mortality (hazard ratio, 0.71 [95% CI, 0.58–0.86]), compared with those who were not in the program. A workplace-based hypertension management program was related to reduced BP levels and lower risks of major adverse cardiovascular events and mortality in Chinese men with hypertension.

China has the largest number of adults with diabetes. Although multiple metabolic risk factors (MRFs) are implicated in the development of diabetes, it remains unclear how they progress during the development of diabetes among Chinese. We examined trajectories of multiple MRFs among Chinese and identified the critical period when drastic changes occurred during the development of diabetes.This prospective cohort study included participants since 2006-2007 in the Kailuan study. People attended biennial examinations until 2017 with additions of new participants at each examination cycle. The time when a participant first completed the examination was served as the baseline. A total of 122,659 participants without prevalent diabetes at baseline and with complete follow-up data were included. MRFs were collected via biennial physical examinations and laboratory measures. Incident diabetes cases were identified via biennial fasting glucose tests and self-reported physician-diagnosis.During up to 12 years of follow-up, 14,922 incident diabetes cases were identified. Compared with participants who did not develop diabetes, those who developed diabetes had more adverse levels of most MRFs at baseline and during follow-up. Abrupt increases in multiple MRFs (including fasting glucose, surrogate insulin resistance indicators, lipids, systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, heart rate, alanine aminotransferase, and C-reactive protein) were observed 3 years before the diagnosis of diabetes.We identified 3 years before diabetes diagnosis as a critical period when multiple MRFs experienced drastic changes. This would have implications for early monitoring and timely prevention for individuals who experience sudden adverse progression of multiple MRFs.

The genetic basis of overall healthy ageing, especially among the East-Asian population is understudied. We conducted a genome-wide association study among 1618 Singapore Chinese elderly participants (65 years or older) ascertained to have aged healthily and compared their genome-wide genotypes to 6221 participants who did not age healthily, after a 20-year follow-up. Two genetic variants were identified (PMeta −8) to be associated with healthy aging, including the LRP1B locus previously associated in long-lived individuals without cognitive decline. Our study sheds additional insights on the genetic basis of healthy ageing.

Background Protein S deficiency (PSD) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disease. In 1984, familial PSD was reported to be prone to recurrent thrombosis. Follow-up studies have shown that heterozygous protein S (PROS1) mutations increase the risk of thrombosis. More than 300 PROS1 mutations have been identified; among them, only a small number of mutations have been reported its possible mechanism to reduce plasma protein S (PS) levels. However, whether PROS1 mutations affect protein structure and why it can induce PSD remains unknown. Methods The clinical phenotypes of the members of a family with thrombosis were collected. Their PS activity was measured using the coagulation method, whereas their protein C and antithrombin III activities were measured using methods such as the chromogenic substrate method. The proband and her parents were screened for the responsible mutation using second-generation whole exon sequencing, and the members of the family were verified for suspected mutations using Sanger sequencing. Mutant and wild type plasmids were constructed and transfected into HEK293T cells to detect the mRNA and protein expression of PROS1. Results In this family, the proband with venous thrombosis of both lower extremities, the proband’s mother with pulmonary embolism and venous thrombosis of both lower extremities, and the proband’s younger brother had significantly lower PS activity and carried a PROS1 c. 1820 T > C:p.Leu607Ser heterozygous mutation (NM_000313.3). However, no such mutations were found in family members with normal PS activity. The PS expression in the cell lysate and supernatant of the Leu607Ser mutant cells decreased, while mRNA expression increased. Immunofluorescence localization showed that there was no significant difference in protein localization before and after mutation. Conclusions The analysis of family phenotype, gene association, and cell function tests suggest that the PROS1 Leu607Ser heterozygous mutation may be a pathogenic mutation. Serine substitution causes structural instability of the entire protein. These data indicate that impaired PS translation and synthesis or possible secretion impairment is the main pathogenesis of this family with hereditary PSD and thrombophilia.

Following-up for 12 months, the prostatic volume (PV), maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax), postvoid residual volume (PVR), International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), quality of life (QoL) score, total prostate-specific antigen (T-PSA), and free prostate-specific antigen (F-PSA) in each group improved as compared to before the surgery (P 0.05), and the above improved indicators, IPSS ratio, and obstructive symptoms in the PAE + TURP group were higher than those in the TURP group (P 0.05). The incidence of postoperative complications in the PAE + TURP group was lower than that in the TURP group. We obtained the pathological picture of a prostate biopsy after PAE for the first time.Compared to TURP alone, PAE + TURP should be promoted, because of its greater efficacy and safety in treating large BPH and fewer post-surgical complications.

To examine the associations between dietary patterns in midlife and likelihood of future healthy ageing in Chinese older adults.Prospective population-based study.We included 14,159 participants aged 45-74 years who were free from cancer, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes at baseline (1993-1998) from the Singapore Chinese Health Study.Dietary intakes in midlife were assessed by a validated food frequency questionnaire at baseline. Diet quality was scored according to the alternate Mediterranean diet (aMED), the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, the alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI)-2010, overall plant-based diet index (PDI), and healthful plant-based diet index (hPDI). Healthy ageing was assessed at the third follow-up visit (2014-2016), which occurred about 20 years after the baseline visit, and was defined as the absence of 10 chronic diseases, no impairment of cognitive function, no limitations in instrumental activities of daily living, no clinical depression at screening, good overall self-perceived health, good physical functioning, and no function-limiting pain among participants who had survival to at least 65 years of age. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models were applied to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between each dietary pattern score and healthy ageing.About 20.0% of participants met the healthy ageing criteria. The OR (95% CI) for healthy ageing comparing the highest with the lowest quartile of diet quality scores was 1.52 (1.31-1.77) for aMED, 1.53 (1.35-1.73) for DASH, 1.39 (1.23-1.57) for AHEI-2010, 1.34 (1.18-1.53) for PDI, and 1.45 (1.27-1.65) for hPDI (all P-trend .001). Each standard deviation increment in different diet quality scores was associated with 12% to 18% higher likelihood of healthy ageing.In this Chinese population, adherence to various healthy dietary patterns at midlife is associated with higher likelihood of healthy ageing at later life.

Five highly stable coordination polymers assembled by 2-(2-carboxyphenyl)imidazo(4,5-f)-(1,10)phenanthroline (2-HNCP) and different aromatic carboxylic acid ligands, namely, [Pb(2-NCP)(L1)]n (1), [Pb2(2-NCP)2(L2)]n·2nH2O (2), [Pb2(2-NCP)2(L2)]n (3), [Pb(2-NCP)(L3)0.5]n (4) and [Pb2(2-NCP)2(L4)]n (5), where HL1 = pyridine-4-carboxylic acid, H2L2 = 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, H2L3 = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid and H2L4 = 2-hydroxy-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Their structures have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and further characterized by elemental analyses and infrared spectroscopy. In 1, adjacent ladder-like chains are extended into a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular architecture by π-π interactions. In 2, the neighboring layers are interconnected by π-π interactions to afford a 3D supramolecular architecture. 3-5 exhibit similar 3D frameworks with a Schläfli symbol of 412·63 topologies. The different auxiliary ligands and the pH value of the reaction system were discussed in regard to the formation of different structures. In addition, these five complexes present high thermal stabilities, the preferential adsorption of CO2 over N2 and excellent photocatalytic activities for dye degradation under visible light irradiation.

Objective: To study the postoperative trauma of the retroperitoneal laparoscopic intrasinusal pyelolithotomy (RLIP) and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Methods: A total of 118 patients who were diagnosed with single pelvis calculus in Shanghai Punan Hospital of Pudong New District between September 2013 and February 2017 were selected and randomly divided into RLIP group and PCNL group who received retroperitoneal laparoscopic intrasinusal pyelolithotomy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy respectively. The removal of the stones was observed 1 week and 4 weeks after surgery, and 3mL of cubital venous blood was collected 3 d and 7 d after operation to detect the renal function indicators, inflammatory markers and stress indicators. Results: The stone removal success rate of RLIP group 1 week and 4 weeks after operation were significantly higher than those of PCNL group, serum BUN, Scr and Cys-C contents as well as eGFR levels were not significantly different between RLIP group and PCNL group 3 d and 7 d after operation, and serum Cor, NE, HSP70, NO, IL-6, hs- CRP, TNF-α and PGE2 contents of RLIP group 3 d and 7 d after operation were significantly lower than those of PCNL group. Conclusion: RLIP is significantly better than PCNL in stone removal and causes significantly less postoperative trauma than PCNL.

The hydrothermal synthesis and magnetic, dielectric and ferroelectric property characterization of ABO3-perovskite GdFe1−xCrxO3 (0 < x < 1) are reported. The mineralizer KOH plays a critical role in the perovskite structure of the sample. The Fe/Cr ratio of the final crystal is controlled by the alkalinity in the initial reaction mixtures. The lattice parameters and magnetic ordering transition temperature have a close relationship with the Fe/Cr ratio. The temperature dependent magnetic properties of GdFe1−xCrxO3 (0 < x < 1) samples show a close relationship with substituent ratios of Cr3+. The occurrence of ferromagnetic behavior in all of the as-prepared samples comes from the coexistence of canted-antiferromagnetism due to the double exchange effect of Fe–O–Fe and Cr–O–Cr and ferromagnetism due to superexchange interaction of Fe–O–Cr. A large spontaneous polarization was observed in GdFe1−xCrxO3 at room temperature, exhibiting a clear ferroelectric hysteresis loop, which indicates the ferroelectric behavior in this system. This work not only provides an effective route to the controllable synthesis of B-site doped REFe1−xCrxO3 perovskite structure materials, but also presents a comprehensive study of the tunable effect of ionic doping on ferroelectric properties.

Epidemiologic studies suggest that declining estrogen levels in menopause may play an important role in the pathogenesis of dementia and contribute to increased risk of cognitive impairment in women. Most previous studies have been conducted in Western populations to investigate the relationship of the length of reproductive periods and use of hormone-replacement therapy with risk of cognitive function and dementia, but the findings are inconclusive. Relevant evidence among Asian populations is limited.To evaluate the association between reproductive and hormonal factors and the risk of cognitive impairment in Chinese women with natural menopause.The Singapore Chinese Health Study is a population-based study that recruited participants aged 45-74 years between 1993 and 1998, and the current study included 8222 women from this cohort who had natural menopause, complete data on reproductive factors and hormonal therapies at baseline (1993-1998), follow-up 1 (1999-2004) and follow-up 2 interviews (2006-2010), and cognitive function evaluated at ages 61-96 years using the Singapore Modified Mini-Mental State Examination during the follow-up 3 visits (2014-2016). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the risk of cognitive impairment.Compared with women with menopause at 50-54 years of age, the odds ratios (95% confidence interval) were 1.67 (1.32-2.11), 1.24 (1.08-1.44), and 1.06 (0.87- 1.29) for women who experienced menopause before 45 years, at 45-49 years of age, and after 54 years, respectively. Compared with women with 35-39 reproductive years from menarche to menopause, the odds ratios (95% confidence interval) were 1.28 (1.11-1.48) for women with35 reproductive years. Furthermore, compared with women who had 1-2 children, the odds ratios (95% confidence interval) were 1.27 (1.04-1.55) for women who had more than 5 children, and the risk increased significantly by 5% per child birth (odds ratio, 1.05; 95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.09). Compared with those who had never used oral contraceptives, women with short-term use (≤5 years) of oral contraceptives had 26% lower odds of having cognitive impairment (odds ratio, 0.74; 95% confidence interval, 0.63-0.87), whereas the association was not statistically significant for those used for more than 5 years (odds ratio, 0.87; 95% confidence interval, 0.68-1.13). Women who used hormone-replacement therapy had a 39% lower odd of getting cognitive impairment compared with nonusers (odds ratio, 0.61; 95% confidence interval, 0.46-0.80).Our data suggest that shorter reproductive years and greater parity were associated with a greater risk of cognitive impairment in late life, whereas the use of oral contraceptives and hormone-replacement therapy was associated with decreased risk. As the population ages, understanding how these factors affect late-life cognitive function in women may help health professionals develop preventive measures targeting lifetime estrogen exposure from endogenous or exogenous sources.

Recently discovered Weyl semimetals have received considerable research interest due to the exotic Weyl fermion-like excitations and the nontrivial π Berry phase near the band degenerate points. Here we show that by constructing a Weyl semimetal p–n–p junction and restricting Weyl fermions into closed orbits with electric and magnetic confinements, the Berry phase acquired by the Weyl fermions can be controlled flexibly. This brings out two effects on electron transport through the junction: when the Berry phase is integer multiples of π an obvious phase shift is observed in the transmission map, whereas for non-integer ones of Berry phase the transmission shows strong chirality dependence and a large chiral or valley-level splitting can be induced. Utilizing this chirality splitting, we further propose a new method to measure the Berry phase in Weyl semimetals, which shows accuracy for various potential profiles and has practical applications in experiments. Since their discovery, Weyl fermions in topological Weyl semimetals have attracted considerable attention due to their quasi-particle analogy to fundamental particles. The authors investigate the effect of nontrivial Berry phase of Weyl topological semimetals using a p-n-p junction, and demonstrate control over the chirality-dependent electronic conductance by reducing the required magnetic field without external modification.

The spin Nernst effect describes a transverse spin current induced by the longitudinal thermal gradient in a system with the spin-orbit coupling. Here we study the spin Nernst effect in a mesoscopic four-terminal cross-bar Weyl semimetal device under a perpendicular magnetic field. By using the tight-binding Hamiltonian combining with the nonequilibrium Green's function method, the three elements of the spin current in the transverse leads and then spin Nernst coefficients are obtained. The results show that the spin Nernst effect in the Weyl semimetal has the essential difference with the traditional one: The z direction spin currents is zero without the magnetic field while it appears under the magnetic field, and the x and y direction spin currents in the two transverse leads flows out or flows in together, in contrary to the traditional spin Nernst effect, in which the spin current is induced by the spin-orbit coupling and flows out from one lead and flows in on the other. So we call it the anomalous spin Nernst effect. In addition, we show that the Weyl semimetals have the center-reversal-type symmetry, the mirror-reversal-type symmetry and the electron-hole-type symmetry, which lead to the spin Nernst coefficients being odd function or even function of the Fermi energy, the magnetic field and the transverse terminals. Moreover, the spin Nernst effect in the Weyl semimetals are strongly anisotropic and its coefficients are strongly dependent on both the direction of thermal gradient and the direction of the transverse lead connection. Three non-equivalent connection modes (x-z, z-x and x-y modes) are studied in detail, and the spin Nernst coefficients for three different modes exhibit very different behaviors. These strongly anisotropic behaviors of the spin Nernst effect can be used as the characterization of magnetic Weyl semimetals., 12 pages, 11 figures

We show that if a quantum dot or Majorana zero mode couples to the chiral Majorana fermions, a resonant exchange of chiral Majorana fermions can occur and leads to a non-Abelian braidinglike operation analogous to the braiding of Majorana zero modes. Remarkably, any operation in the braid group can be achieved by this scheme. We further propose electrical transport experiments to observe the braidinglike operation on four chiral Majorana fermions and demonstrate the non-Abelian character in four-terminal devices of the quantum anomalous Hall insulator/topological superconductor hybrid junctions. Both a conductance peak due to the operation and the operation-order-dependent conductance are predicted. These findings pave the way to perform any non-Abelian operation on chiral Majorana fermions by electrically controllable quantum dots.
