25. Determination of Free Glycidol and Total Free Monochloropropanediol in Fish and Krill Oil with Simple Aqueous Derivatization and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry.

Abstract

This study introduces a novel method for detecting free glycidol and total free monochloropropanediol (MCPD) in fish and krill oil. Before analysis on high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), p-(dimethylamino)phenol was used for derivatization of these compounds, enabling the sensitive determination of these contaminants. The sample preparation procedure includes a simple, efficient pretreatment using NaCl aqueous solution extraction and C18 sorbent cleanup (for demulsification), distinguishing glycidol from MCPD under varied reaction conditions for derivatization (weak acidic and strong alkaline aqueous environments). This approach shows broad linearity from 1 to at least 256 ng·mL−1, improved sensitivity compared to standard GC-MS methods, with the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) for MCPD and glycidol in both oil samples verified at 0.5 ng·mL−1 and 1 ng·mL−1, respectively. Different from previous HPLC-MS methods for direct detection of glycidol esters or MCPD esters, this is the first HPLC-MS method used for the detection of free glycidol and total free MCPD in edible oil. Furthermore, this method can be potentially developed for glycidol or monochloropropane diol esters, which is similar to the current official methods adopted for indirect detection of these contaminants in different food matrices. Application of this detection method to real dietary supplements (fish oil and krill oil) revealed MCPD residues in fish oil (maximum detected: 32.78 ng·mL−1) and both MCPD (maximum detected: 2767.3 ng·mL−1) and glycidol (maximum detected: 22.2 ng·mL−1) in krill oil, emphasizing its effectiveness and accuracy for assessing contamination in these supplements. Abstract

This study introduces a single-layer patterned graphene metamaterial, composed of a graphene ring (GR), two parallel graphene strips (TPGSs), two vertical graphene strips (TVGSs), and a graphene block (GB), which achieves triple plasmon-induced transparency (TPIT) in the terahertz (THz) frequency range using coupled mode theory (CMT) and the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique. Moreover, a synchronized electro-optical switch with four modulation modes is implemented by dynamically adjusting graphene's Fermi level, exhibiting modulation degrees of amplitude (MDA) of 88.3%, 94.7%, 86.9%, and 89.0% at 1.69 THz, 3.14 THz, 3.95 THz, and 4.67 THz, respectively. In addition, the modes excited by TPGSs and TVGSs interconvert due to the proposed structure's symmetry, accounting for the polarization insensitivity of TPIT. The enhanced MDA and polarization insensitivity of the electro-optical switch presented in this study significantly surpass those of comparable electro-optical switches. Abstract

This paper presents the design and performance evaluation of a multi-disc magnetorheological fluid (MRF)-based brake (MRB) for A00-class minicars. The braking performance of the MRB is studied by means of theoretical analysis and experimental verification. Firstly, the MRB is designed according to the shear model of the MRF, and the structure optimization is carried subsequently. Secondly, multi-physical simulations of the MRB are conducted to investigate the transient temperature field, thermal stress and thermal strain distribution of the MRB under different braking models; Finally, a performance evaluating testbed is built to experimentally assess the braking performance of the MRB. The results indicate that the theoretical braking torque of the MRB fulfills the target value. The thermal strain-induced deformation of the disc is minimal and has a negligible effect on the torque output. In addition, the MRB is experimentally validated to exhibit excellent braking performance in terms of sufficient torque output capacity, rapid response, low temperature rise characteristic, as well as favorable velocity following property. Abstract

3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) is known as one of the neo-formed contaminants widely distributed in foodstuffs, especially in processed foods with high sides effects for human health. In this study, 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) content for eleven (11) different types of foods from local market were evaluated in two ways using: (1) cysteine modified AgNPs (Cys-AgNPs) as functional nanomaterials for UV-Vis technique, and (2) gold-modified by Cys-AgNPs (Cys-AgNPs/Au) in electrochemistry sensor. High concentrations of 3-MCPD were found in most studied samples namely in liquid foods (palm oil and frying oil from tuna fish), fried foods (fried ripe banana, roasted peanut, banana chips, fried tuna and potato fries), smoked mackerel and roasted foods (pork barbecue). The maximum 3-MCPD content were 1085 μg/kg in liquid foods, 582 μg/kg in fried foods, 156 μg/kg in smoked and 716 μg/kg in roasted foods. As exhibited, the level of 3-MCPD in food products on the Ivorian market is relatively higher. This study indicates the importance of monitoring 3-MCPD content in food products for both domestic and industrial processing.
