23. Association of Nighttime Sleep Duration with Cognitive Impairment among Community-dwelling Older Adults

Abstract

Background With the rapid population aging in China, cognitive impairment in older adults has become a growing public health concern. Objective To examine the association between nighttime sleep duration and cognitive impairment among community-dwelling older adults. Methods Data were derived from the cohort of Older Adult Health and Modifiable Environmental Factors established in Fuyang City from July to September 2018, among whom a total of 4 837 older adults with complete data on cognitive function and sleep time were included in this study. General demographic characteristics〔gender, age, living area (urban or rural), education level, occupation, marital status〕, living habits, the history of chronic diseases, sleep duration, and overall cognitive function were extracted. Binary Logistic regression models were used to analyze the association between nighttime sleep duration and cognitive impairment. Restrictive cubic splines were used to further determine potential dose-response relationships between them. Results The participants had a mean nighttime sleep duration of (6.95±1.75) hours, among whom 1 773 (36.65%) slept ≤6 hours per day, 2 088 (43.17%) slept >6-8 hours per day, and 976 (20.18%) slept >8 hours per day. The detection rate of cognitive impairment was 37.44% (1 811/4 837). After adjusting for gender, age, living area, education level and other confounding factors, the detection rate of cognitive impairment was 1.26〔95%CI (1.09, 1.46) 〕 times higher in older adults with nighttime sleep duration of ≤6 hours, and was 1.22〔95%CI (1.03, 1.46) 〕 times higher in older adults with nighttime sleep duration of >8 hours than in those with nighttime sleep duration of >6-8 hours (P8 hours was 1.35〔 (95%CI (1.06, 1.72) 〕 times higher than in those with nighttime sleep duration of >6-8 hours (P6-8 hours (P

Abstract

The coordinated development of urbanization and atmospheric environment is of great significance for improving the quality of urbanization and solving air pollution problems in the Bohai Rim region. We have constructed urbanization quality level system indicator system and atmospheric environment system indicator system. By combining the coupling coordination degree model and spatial autocorrelation method, we analyze the spatiotemporal changes of urbanization, PM2.5, and PM10 of 43 cities in the Bohai Rim region from 2015 to 2020 using the coupling coordination model and spatial autocorrelation method, revealing the spatiotemporal evolution law of the coupling coordination relationship between regional urbanization system and atmospheric environment system. The results show that: (1) The overall urbanization level is increasing and the concentration of atmospheric particulate matter pollution is decreasing from 2015 to 2020 in the Bohai Rim; the urbanization level shows a spatial distribution pattern of high in the northeast and low in the southwest, and the concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 show a pattern of high in the southwest and low in the northeast, with obvious clustering characteristics; (2) The coupling and coordination relationship between urbanization and atmospheric environment is showing an increasing trend in the Bohai Rim region. During the research period, the lowest, highest, average, and coupling coordination levels of the coupling and coordination scheduling are continuously increasing. The spatial distribution pattern of the coupling coordination degree is low in the southwest and high in the northeast, and there is a strong regional convergence of the coupling coordination type transformation, with certain spatial and temporal dependence.

38. Molecular Mechanisms of Grain Chalkiness Variation in Rice Panicles.

Abstract

Grain chalkiness adversely affects rice quality, and the positional variation of grain chalkiness within a rice panicle presents a substantial obstacle to quality improvement in China. However, the molecular mechanism underlying this variation is unclear. This study conducted a genetic and physiological analysis of grains situated at distinct positions (upper, middle, and bottom primary branches of the rice panicle, denoted as Y1, Y2, and Y3) within a rice panicle using the Yangdao 6 variety. The results indicated that the percentage of chalky grains (PCG) in Y1 was the highest, i.e., 17.12% and 52.18% higher than that of Y2 and Y3, respectively. Y2 exhibited the highest degree of grain chalkiness (DGC), attributable to its greater area of endosperm chalkiness (AEC) than the others. Y3 demonstrated the lowest PCG and DGC. Additionally, Y1 and Y2 were characterized by lower amylose and protein contents, as well as looser starch granule morphology, in comparison to Y3. Compared with Y3, both the average and maximum filling rates of Y1 and Y2 increased markedly; however, the active filling duration was notably reduced by 7.10 d and 5.56 d, respectively. The analysis of genomic expression levels indicated an enrichment of starch and sucrose metabolism in Y1-vs.-Y2, Y2-vs.-Y3, and Y1-vs.-Y3, with 7 genes (5 up-regulated and 2 down-regulated), 53 genes (12 up-regulated and 41 down-regulated), and 12 genes (2 up-regulated and 10 down-regulated) in the Y1-vs.-Y2, Y2-vs.-Y3, and Y1-vs.-Y3. The majority of these genes were down-regulated, linking metabolic activity to grain filling and contributing to the occurrence of grain chalkiness in rice panicles. Abstract

This study was conducted to quantify the association of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the academic performance of children and adolescents. The literature was systematically searched in six electronic databases, and a meta-analysis was conducted. Twenty studies with a total of 1,196,631 children and adolescents from five countries were included. Meta-analysis showed that ACE score was positively associated with poor academic achievement, grade repetition, and special education support. Compared with children and adolescents without any ACE, those with one or more ACE had a significantly higher risk of poor academic achievement (pooled odds ratio [OR]: 1.45, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.13, 1.85], I 2 = 82.6%) and grade repetition (pooled OR: 1.36, 95% CI [1.29, 1.43], I 2 = 71.0%). Moreover, all types of ACEs were positively associated with poor academic achievement and grade repetition. In addition, there was a significant dose-response relationship between the ACE score and the risk of poor academic achievement. This study supported that ACE had a significant impact on the academic performance of children and adolescents. Based on these findings, we recommend that early screening of ACEs for children and adolescent is critical and appropriate support and prevention in education should be developed for those with ACEs.
