1. M$^{3}$D: A Multimodal, Multilingual and Multitask Dataset for Grounded Document-level Information Extraction

Abstract

Multimodal information extraction (IE) tasks have attracted increasing attention because many studies have shown that multimodal information benefits text information extraction. However, existing multimodal IE datasets mainly focus on sentence-level image-facilitated IE in English text, and pay little attention to video-based multimodal IE and fine-grained visual grounding. Therefore, in order to promote the development of multimodal IE, we constructed a multimodal multilingual multitask dataset, named M$^{3}$D, which has the following features: (1) It contains paired document-level text and video to enrich multimodal information; (2) It supports two widely-used languages, namely English and Chinese; (3) It includes more multimodal IE tasks such as entity recognition, entity chain extraction, relation extraction and visual grounding. In addition, our dataset introduces an unexplored theme, i.e., biography, enriching the domains of multimodal IE resources. To establish a benchmark for our dataset, we propose an innovative hierarchical multimodal IE model. This model effectively leverages and integrates multimodal information through a Denoised Feature Fusion Module (DFFM). Furthermore, in non-ideal scenarios, modal information is often incomplete. Thus, we designed a Missing Modality Construction Module (MMCM) to alleviate the issues caused by missing modalities. Our model achieved an average performance of 53.80% and 53.77% on four tasks in English and Chinese datasets, respectively, which set a reasonable standard for subsequent research. In addition, we conducted more analytical experiments to verify the effectiveness of our proposed module. 10. Identification of the Facial Features of Patients With Cancer: A Deep Learning–Based Pilot Study

Abstract

BackgroundCancer has become the second leading cause of death globally. Most cancer cases are due to genetic mutations, which affect metabolism and result in facial changes. ObjectiveIn this study, we aimed to identify the facial features of patients with cancer using the deep learning technique. MethodsImages of faces of patients with cancer were collected to build the cancer face image data set. A face image data set of people without cancer was built by randomly selecting images from the publicly available MegaAge data set according to the sex and age distribution of the cancer face image data set. Each face image was preprocessed to obtain an upright centered face chip, following which the background was filtered out to exclude the effects of nonrelative factors. A residual neural network was constructed to classify cancer and noncancer cases. Transfer learning, minibatches, few epochs, L2 regulation, and random dropout training strategies were used to prevent overfitting. Moreover, guided gradient-weighted class activation mapping was used to reveal the relevant features. ResultsA total of 8124 face images of patients with cancer (men: n=3851, 47.4%; women: n=4273, 52.6%) were collected from January 2018 to January 2019. The ages of the patients ranged from 1 year to 70 years (median age 52 years). The average faces of both male and female patients with cancer displayed more obvious facial adiposity than the average faces of people without cancer, which was supported by a landmark comparison. When testing the data set, the training process was terminated after 5 epochs. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.94, and the accuracy rate was 0.82. The main relative feature of cancer cases was facial skin, while the relative features of noncancer cases were extracted from the complementary face region. ConclusionsIn this study, we built a face data set of patients with cancer and constructed a deep learning model to classify the faces of people with and those without cancer. We found that facial skin and adiposity were closely related to the presence of cancer.

Abstract

The Dynamic Zero-COVID Policy in China spanned three years and diverse emotional responses have been observed at different times. In this paper, we retrospectively analyzed public sentiments and perceptions of the policy, especially regarding how they evolved over time, and how they related to people's lived experiences. Through sentiment analysis of 2,358 collected Weibo posts, we identified four representative points, i.e., policy initialization, sharp sentiment change, lowest sentiment score, and policy termination, for an in-depth discourse analysis through the lens of appraisal theory. In the end, we reflected on the evolving public sentiments toward the Dynamic Zero-COVID Policy and proposed implications for effective epidemic prevention and control measures for future crises.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Oral anti-coagulants (OAC) are the intervention for the prevention of stroke, which consistently improve clinical outcomes and survival among patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The main purpose of this study is to identify problems in OAC utilization among hospitalized patients with AF in China. METHODS: Using data from the Improving Care for Cardiovascular Disease in China-Atrial Fibrillation (CCC-AF) registry, guideline-recommended OAC use in eligible patients was assessed. RESULTS: A total of 52,530 patients with non-valvular AF were enrolled from February 2015 to December 2019, of whom 38,203 were at a high risk of stroke, 9717 were at a moderate risk, and 4610 were at a low risk. On admission, only 20.0% (6075/30,420) of patients with a diagnosed AF and a high risk of stroke were taking OAC. The use of pre-hospital OAC on admission was associated with a lower risk of new-onset ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack among the diagnosed AF population (adjusted odds ratio: 0.54, 95% confidence interval: 0.43-0.68; P  70% of AF patients were at a high risk of stroke. Although poor performance on guideline-recommended OAC use was found in this study, over time the CCC-AF project has made progress in stroke prevention in the Chinese AF population.Registration:ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02309398.

Abstract

Timing synchronization (TS) is vital for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, which makes the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) window start at the inter-symbol-interference (ISI)-free region. However, the multi-path uncertainty in wireless communication scenarios degrades the TS correctness. To alleviate this degradation, we propose a learning-based TS method enhanced by improving the design of training label. In the proposed method, the classic cross-correlator extracts the initial TS feature for benefiting the following machine learning. Wherein, the network architecture unfolds one classic cross-correlation process. Against the multi-path uncertainty, a novel training label is designed by representing the ISI-free region and especially highlighting its approximate midpoint. Therein, the closer to the region boundary of ISI-free the smaller label values are set, expecting to locate the maximum network output in ISI-free region with a high probability. Then, to guarantee the correctness of labeling, we exploit the priori information of line-of-sight (LOS) to form a LOS-aided labeling. Numerical results confirm that, the proposed training label effectively enhances the correctness of the proposed TS learner against the multi-path uncertainty., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Timing synchronization (TS) is one of the key tasks in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. However, multi-path uncertainty corrupts the TS correctness, making OFDM systems suffer from a severe inter-symbol-interference (ISI). To tackle this issue, we propose a timing-metric learning-based TS method assisted by a lightweight one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1-D CNN). Specifically, the receptive field of 1-D CNN is specifically designed to extract the metric features from the classic synchronizer. Then, to combat the multi-path uncertainty, we employ the varying delays and gains of multi-path (the characteristics of multi-path uncertainty) to design the timing-metric objective, and thus form the training labels. This is typically different from the existing timing-metric objectives with respect to the timing synchronization point. Our method substantively increases the completeness of training data against the multi-path uncertainty due to the complete preservation of metric information. By this mean, the TS correctness is improved against the multi-path uncertainty. Abstract

Due to the implementation bottleneck of training data collection in realistic wireless communications systems, supervised learning-based timing synchronization (TS) is challenged by the incompleteness of training data. To tackle this bottleneck, we extend the computer-aided approach, with which the local device can generate the training data instead of generating learning labels from the received samples collected in realistic systems, and then construct an extreme learning machine (ELM)-based TS network in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Specifically, by leveraging the rough information of channel impulse responses (CIRs), i.e., root-mean-square (r.m.s) delay, we propose the loose constraint-based and flexible constraint-based training strategies for the learning-label design against the maximum multi-path delay. The underlying mechanism is to improve the completeness of multi-path delays that may appear in the realistic wireless channels and thus increase the statistical efficiency of the designed TS learner. By this means, the proposed ELM-based TS network can alleviate the degradation of generalization performance. Abstract

To analyze the main factors controlling the effectiveness of corrosion coupon monitoring，a three-factor，three-level orthogonal experiment covering field conditions was designed using a multiphase flow corrosion loop (MPFC).The orthogonal experiment was verified through Fluent finite element simulation analysis.The MPFC test results indicated that the average corrosion rate of the coupons was positively correlated with temperature，flow rate and installation depth，and it was observed that the corrosion rate of the coupons was higher than that of the pipe wall.In the Fluent finite element simulation，both the surface flow velocity on the coupon and the length of the recirculation zone were positively correlated with coupon depth.Turbulent kinetic energy along the flow direction (x-axis) showed a pattern of rapid increase followed by gradual decrease.Additionally， the shear force on the coupon and the corrosion monitoring error were positively correlated with temperature， flow rate and installation depth.Based on the results of the orthogonal experiment analysis， the controlling factors for the effectiveness of corrosion coupon monitoring were ranked as installation depth＞flow rate＞temperature.

Abstract

AIMS: The clinical correlates and outcomes of asymptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF) in hospitalized patients are largely unknown. We aimed to investigate the clinical correlates and in-hospital outcomes of asymptomatic AF in hospitalized Chinese patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a cross-sectional registry study of inpatients with AF enrolled in the Improving Care for Cardiovascular Disease in China-Atrial Fibrillation Project between February 2015 and December 2019. We investigated the clinical characteristics of asymptomatic AF and the association between the clinical correlates and the in-hospital outcomes of asymptomatic AF. Asymptomatic and symptomatic AF were defined according to the European Heart Rhythm Association score. Asymptomatic patients were more commonly males (56.3%) and had more comorbidities such as hypertension (57.4%), diabetes mellitus (18.6%), peripheral artery disease (PAD; 2.3%), coronary artery disease (55.5%), previous history of stroke/transient ischaemic attack (TIA; 17.9%), and myocardial infarction (MI; 5.4%); however, they had less prevalent heart failure (9.6%) or left ventricular ejection fractions ≤40% (7.3%). Asymptomatic patients were more often hospitalized with a non-AF diagnosis as the main diagnosis and were more commonly first diagnosed with AF (23.9%) and long-standing persistent/permanent AF (17.0%). The independent determinants of asymptomatic presentation were male sex, long-standing persistent AF/permanent AF, previous history of stroke/TIA, MI, PAD, and previous treatment with anti-platelet drugs. The incidence of in-hospital clinical events such as all-cause death, ischaemic stroke/TIA, and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) was higher in asymptomatic patients than in symptomatic patients, and asymptomatic clinical status was an independent risk factor for in-hospital all-cause death, ischaemic stroke/TIA, and ACS. CONCLUSION: Asymptomatic AF is common among hospitalized patients with AF. Asymptomatic clinical status is associated with male sex, comorbidities, and a higher risk of in-hospital outcomes. The adoption of effective management strategies for patients with AF should not be solely based on clinical symptoms.
