Abstract

Hollow multishelled structures (HoMSs), with relatively isolated cavities and hierarchal pores in the shells, are structurally similar to cells. Functionally inspired by the different transmission forms in living cells, we studied the mass transport process in HoMSs in detail. In the present work, after introducing the antibacterial agent methylisothiazolinone (MIT) as model molecules into HoMSs, we discover three sequential release stages, i.e., burst release, sustained release and stimulus-responsive release, in one system. The triple-shelled structure can provide a long sterility period in a bacteria-rich environment that is nearly 8 times longer than that of the pure antimicrobial agent under the same conditions. More importantly, the HoMS system provides a smart responsive release mechanism that can be triggered by environmental changes. All these advantages could be attributed to chemical diffusion- and physical barrier-driven temporally-spatially ordered drug release, providing a route for the design of intelligent nanomaterials.

10. Defect and interface control on graphitic carbon nitrides/upconversion nanocrystals for enhanced solar hydrogen production

Abstract

The effective utilization of solar energy for hydrogen production requires an abundant supply of thermodynamically active photo-electrons; however, the photocatalysts are generally impeded by insufficient light absorption and fast photocarrier recombination. Here, we report a multiple-regulated strategy to capture photons and boost photocarrier dynamics by developing a broadband photocatalyst composed of defect engineered g-C3N4 (DCN) and upconversion NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ (NYF) nanocrystals. Through a precise defect engineering, the S dopants and C vacancies jointly render DCN with defect states to effectively extend the visible light absorption to 590 nm and boost photocarrier separation via a moderate electron-trapping ability, thus facilitating the subsequent re-absorption and utilization of upconverted photons/electrons. Importantly, we found a promoted interfacial charge polarization between DCN and NYF has also been achieved mainly due to Y-N interaction, which further favors the upconverted excited energy transfer from NYF onto DCN as verified both theoretically and experimentally. With a 3D architecture, the NYF@DCN catalyst exhibits a superior solar H2 evolution rate among the reported upconversion-based system, which is 19.3 and 1.5 fold higher than bulk material and DCN, respectively. This work provides an innovative strategy to boost solar utilization by using defect engineering and building up interaction between hetero-materials.

Abstract

Various kinds of amorphous materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, metal oxides, and metal phosphates, have demonstrated superior electrocatalytic performance compared with their crystalline counterparts. Compared to other materials for electrocatalysis, noble metals exhibit intrinsically high activity and excellent durability. However, it is still very challenging to prepare amorphous noble-metal nanomaterials due to the strong interatomic metallic bonding. Herein, the discovery of a unique thiol molecule is reported, namely bismuthiol I, which can induce the transformation of Pd nanomaterials from face-centered-cubic (fcc) phase into amorphous phase without destroying their integrity. This ligand-induced amorphization is realized by post-synthetic ligand exchange under ambient conditions, and is applicable to fcc Pd nanomaterials with different capping ligands. Importantly, the obtained amorphous Pd nanoparticles exhibit remarkably enhanced activity and excellent stability toward electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution in acidic solution. This work provides a facile and effective method for preparing amorphous Pd nanomaterials, and demonstrates their promising electrocatalytic application. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract

Heterostructured, including heterophase, noble-metal nanomaterials have attracted much interest due to their promising applications in diverse fields. However, great challenges still remain in the rational synthesis of well-defined noble-metal heterophase nanostructures. Herein, we report the preparation of Pd nanoparticles with an unconventional hexagonal close-packed (2H type) phase, referred to as 2H-Pd nanoparticles, via a controlled phase transformation of amorphous Pd nanoparticles. Impressively, by using the 2H-Pd nanoparticles as seeds, Au nanomaterials with different crystal phases epitaxially grow on the specific exposed facets of the 2H-Pd, i.e., face-centered cubic (fcc) Au (fcc-Au) on the (002)h facets of 2H-Pd while 2H-Au on the other exposed facets, to achieve well-defined fcc-2H-fcc heterophase Pd@Au core-shell nanorods. Moreover, through such unique facet-directed crystal-phase-selective epitaxial growth, a series of unconventional fcc-2H-fcc heterophase core-shell nanostructures, including Pd@Ag, Pd@Pt, Pd@PtNi, and Pd@PtCo, have also been prepared. Impressively, the fcc-2H-fcc heterophase Pd@Au nanorods show excellent performance toward the electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) for production of carbon monoxide with Faradaic efficiencies of over 90% in an exceptionally wide applied potential window from -0.9 to -0.4 V (versus the reversible hydrogen electrode), which is among the best reported CO2RR catalysts in H-type electrochemical cells. © 2020 American Chemical Society.
