Islands are sensitive zones of sea-land interaction and typical ecologically fragile areas that are highly vulnerable to natural disasters, especially marine aquaculture, which is sensitive and at high risk to typhoon disasters; additionally, they are home to aquaculture households with high economic vulnerability to typhoons and poor adaptive capacity. This study focused on Liuheng Town of Zhoushan and the Dongtou District of Wenzhou, which were severely affected by Super Typhoon Lekima, and Gouqi Town of Zhoushan, which was severely affected by Typhoon In-Fa and Super Typhoon Chanthu, as case areas. Based on data acquired from 344 questionnaire surveys of aquaculture households and interview data from various related bodies, this study used factor analysis of mixed data and hierarchical clustering on principal components to identify the types of vulnerability of island aquaculture households to typhoon disasters and reveal the characteristics of each vulnerability type, as well as to identify the discriminative indicators of household vulnerability types, for analyzing the impact of typhoon disasters and other stressors on the vulnerability of island aquaculture households to typhoons. The results showed that the aquaculture industry and aquaculture households in the island areas showed high economic vulnerability, with most shrimp, crab, and shellfish mixed farming, algae, and mussel farming households suffering serious losses from typhoons. Second, differences in exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity led to three different types and characteristics of vulnerability in aquaculture households. The degree of household exposure varied across aquaculture species, with mussels having the highest, algae the next highest, and shrimp, crab, and shellfish the lowest. Island aquaculture households showed outstanding sensitivity, as reflected in their high dependence on aquaculture, significant household human capital problems, relatively limited support from social networks, and frequent exposure to typhoon disasters. The adaptive capacity of households varied across aquaculture species, with mussel households having superior adaptive capacity, and shrimp, crab, and shellfish households and algal aquaculture households having relatively poor adaptive capacity. Third, the common influencing factors of aquaculture households' vulnerability to typhoon disasters are labor shortages, frequent typhoon disasters, and inadequate infrastructure. The differences among the significant discriminant indicators, such as the degree of exposure, aquaculture species, average annual household income, age and education level of the household head, social support, number and type of adaptation strategies adopted, and cost–benefit situation, are key to the formation of different vulnerability types. Finally, multiple stressors from the climate, ecosystem, economy and markets, society, institutions, and policies mutually interact to exert cumulative effects that increase the vulnerability of fishery ecosystems and the socioeconomic vulnerability of households in island regions. This study provides important empirical evidence for governments, aquaculture households, and other relevant stakeholders in island regions to reduce their vulnerability and increase their adaptive capacity.

This study investigated the power of two-level hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) to explain variability in intervention effectiveness between participants in context of single-case experimental design (SCED) research. HLM is a flexible technique that allows the inclusion of participant characteristics (e.g., age, gender, and disability types) as moderators, and as such supplements visual analysis findings. First, this study empirically investigated the power to estimate intervention and moderator effects using Monte Carlo simulation techniques. The results indicate that larger values for the true effects and the number of participants resulted in a higher power. The more moderators added to the model, the more participants needed to detect the effects with sufficient power (i.e., power [greater than or equal to]0.80). When a model includes three moderators, at least 20 participants are required to capture the intervention effect and moderator effects with sufficient power. For that same condition, but only including one moderator, seven participants are sufficient. Specific recommendations for designing a SCED study with sufficient power to estimate intervention and moderator effects were provided. Second, this study introduced a newly developed user-friendly point and click Shiny tool, "PowerSCED." This tool assists applied SCED researchers in designing a SCED study that has sufficient power to detect intervention and moderator effects. To end, the use of HLM with the inclusion of moderators was demonstrated using two previously published SCED studies in the journal "School Psychology Quarterly."

This study introduces an innovative meta-analytic approach, two-stage multilevel meta-analysis that considers the hierarchical structure of single-case experimental design (SCED) data. This approach is unique as it is suitable to include moderators at the intervention level, participant level, and study level, and is therefore especially recommended for the meta-analyst interested in moving beyond estimating the overall intervention effectiveness. Using this approach, the between-participant variability and between-study variability in intervention effectiveness can be evaluated in addition to obtaining a generalized effect size estimate across studies. This is a timely contribution to the SCED field, as the source(s) of variability in effect size can be identified, and moderators at the corresponding level(s) (participant level and/or study level) can be added to explain the variability. The two-stage multilevel meta-analytic approach, with the inclusion of moderators, can provide evidence-based recommendations about the effectiveness of an intervention taking into account intervention, participant, and study characteristics. First, a conceptual introduction to two-stage multilevel meta-analysis is given to provide a good understanding of its full potentials and modeling options. Second, the usage of this approach will be demonstrated by applying it to a published meta-analytic data set. The goal of this study is to disseminate the two-stage multilevel meta-analysis approach in the hope that SCED meta-analyst will consider this methodology in future meta-analyses.

To understand whose parenting (mothers vs. fathers) and which type of parenting (warmth vs. hostility) is more important in predicting adolescent aggression, this study applied dominance analysis to evaluate the relative importance of four different parenting dimensions (maternal hostility, paternal hostility, maternal warmth, and paternal warmth). Four waves of adolescent-reported longitudinal data from the PROSPER project (N = 626, 52% adolescent girls, 89% White rural, age 12 to 15) were used to investigate longitudinal change in the relative importance of these dimensions over time. Findings reveal that at most ages, maternal hostility was relatively more important than both paternal hostility and maternal warmth in predicting adolescent aggression among adolescent girls and boys. However, paternal parenting was more important for boys at specific ages. Findings are discussed in terms of implications for interventions and further research on parenting.

Reading literacy is the core component of Chinese literacy and the basic ability needed in students' personal development. From the experience of international curriculum and teaching reform, project-based learning is an important way to train students' core literacy. In this context, this paper explores the impact of project-based learning on reading literacy of primary school students in blended learning environment by adopting a mixed-method design. The results show that, compared with traditional teaching, project-based learning is more conducive to promoting primary students' reading behavior and attitude, improving their reading level and reading comprehension ability with two reading purposes. This finding provides empirical evidence and practical guidance for Chinese teachers in primary schools when implementing project-based learning.

Children are the hope and future of the country, and doing an excellent job for children is of great importance to social development. Social work program efficiency assessment, can help service providers and program implementers understand the effectiveness of program implementation. For this reason, this study uses data envelopment analysis and the Tobit regression model to construct a child protection social work program efficiency assessment model. The input-output indicators of child protection program efficiency are selected. The model is used to analyze the input-output efficiency of social work child protection programs in City H from 2018-2021 as an example. The variables that affect the efficiency of child protection programs are explored in depth to explore the effective ways of child protection. The results show that the comprehensive technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency, and scale efficiency of the child protection program in 2018-2021 are all less than 1 and have not reached DEA efficiency. The comprehensive technical efficiency of the program is significantly affected by the scale efficiency, which necessitates an increase in resource investment in the child protection program. In addition, the six selected influencing factors are significant, at least at the 10% level, all of which positively affect the efficiency of child protection programs and need to be focused on to better improve the efficiency of social work services.

This study using PROSPER data (N = 977, age 11.5-age 15) investigated the longitudinal within-family associations between parent reported parental monitoring and adolescent aggression. Importantly, this study is the first one to examine parent gender and adolescent gender differences on these within-family associations. Results differed between mothers and fathers. There was a negative, bidirectional within-family association between maternal monitoring and adolescent aggression, such that more maternal monitoring than usual was associated with fewer adolescent aggressive behavior problems than usual within the same family, and vice versa. In contrast, during mid-adolescence, a positive, bidirectional within-family association between paternal monitoring and adolescent males' aggression was found, such that more paternal monitoring than usual was related to more adolescent males' aggression than usual within the same family, and vice versa. Practical implications on intervention strategies are discussed.
