6. Effect of temperature on the population growth ofBactrocera tau(Walker) (Dipt., Tephritidae)

Abstract

The developmental thresholds and number of degree-days needed to complete development were determined for the immature stages and the preovipositional period of the pumpkin fly, Bactrocera tau at 6 constant temperatures (19, 22, 25, 28, 31 and 34 °C). They are (threshold/degree-days) 9.32 °C/15.75 for the eggs, 6.67°C/113.82 for the larvae, 9.30°C/144.35 for the pupae and 8.56°C/180.8 for the preovipositional period. Developmental rate was related to temperature by a sigmoid curve. Gross and net fecundity, and fertility were greatest at 25 °C, although daily fecundity and fertility were greatest at 28 °C. Intrinsic and finite rates of population increase were greatest at 28 °C. Zusammenfassung Uber die Wirkung der Temperatur auf das Populationswachstum von Bactrocera tau (Walk.) (Dipt., Tephritidae) Es wurden der Entwicklungsnullpunkt und die Zahl der Tagesgrade, die zur Vollendung der Entwicklung notig sind, fur die Entwicklungsstadien und die Praovisitions-Periode der Kurbisfruchtfliege, Bactrocera tau bei 6 konstanten Temperaturen (19, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34 °C) untersucht. Der Entwicklungsnullpunkt und die Tagesgrade betrugen 9,3°C/15.75 fur die Eier, 6,7°C/113,8 fur die Larven, 9,3°C/144,4 fur die Puppen und 8,6 °C/180,8 fur die Praovipositionsperiode. Das Verhaltnis von Entwicklungsrate zur Temperatur wurde durch eine Simoid-Kurve gekennzeichnet. Die Brutto-und Netto-Fekunditat und Fertilitat waren bei 25 °C am hochsten, obgleich die tagliche Fekunditat und Fertilitat bei 28 °C ihren hochsten Wert erreichten. Die Intrinsic-Endrate des Populationswachstums war bei 28 °C am grosten.

17. Egg Parasitoids of Sophonia rufofascia(Homoptera: Cicadellidae) in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Abstract

Parasitism of the leafhopper Sophonia rufofascia(Kuoh and Kuoh), a recent immigrant that has become a widespread pest in Hawaii, was examined in a 1-year survey in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Samples of young leaves of four plant species infested with eggs of S. rufofasciawere collected at five sites ranging from 880 to 1190 m in elevation. Leafhopper eggs were parasitized principally by three species of Mymaridae (Hymenoptera): Polynemasp., Schizophragmasp. probably bicolor(Dozier), and Chaetomymarsp. Although parasitism by each species fluctuated at levels usually below 10%, all three were detected consistently across most host plants, sites, and sample periods. Total parasitism differed at a marginally significant level among host plants and sites, but not among sample periods. Total parasitism averaged 14.3% (maximum: 26.3%) on Dodonaea viscosaJacquin, 10.6% (maximum: 17.5%) on Myrica fayaAiton, 8.7% (maximum: 29.5%) on Metrosideros polymorphaGaudich-Beaupre, and 1.6% (maximum: 4.3%) on Vaccinium reticulatumSmith. Parasitism was generally higher at sites lower in elevation. Further monitoring is recommended to determine whether parasitism will increase to levels that can effectively suppress S. rufofasciapopulations. The efficacy of natural enemies already present in Hawaii is important because concern over nontarget impacts on endemic leafhoppers makes introduction of new biological control agents difficult.

19. Feeding damage of the introduced leafhopper Sophonia rufofascia (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) to plants in forests and watersheds of the Hawaiian Islands

Abstract

Experiments were performed to determine the role of the leafhopper Sophonia rufofascia (Kuoh & Kuoh) in damage observed on forest and watershed plants in the Hawaiian Islands. Laboratory manipulation of leafhopper populations on fiddlewood, Citharexylum spinosum L., caused interveinal chlorosis and vein browning on young fully expanded leavessimilar to that observed on leafhopper infested plants seen in the field and necrosis on older leaves. Field studies with caged 'uluhe' fern, Dicranopteris linearis (Burman), demonstrated that frond veins turned brown within 2 d of leafhopper feeding; and by 141 d after feeding, an average of 85% of the surface area of the fronds were necrotic compared with only 12% necrosis in untreated cages. Field trials with stump-cut firetree, Myrica faya Aiton, were performed to determinethe effect of leafhopper feeding on new growth. Our studies showed that the new growth in exclusion cages had significantly greater stem length and diameter, a higher number of nodes, fewer damaged leaves, and almost twice as much leaf area compared with plants caged but with the sides left open to permit leafhopper access. Microscopic examination of sections through damaged areas of several leafhopper host plants showed vascular bundle abnormalities similar to those associatedwith hopperburn caused by potato leafhopper, Empoasca fabae (Harris), feeding on alfalfa. On Hawaiian tree fern, Cibotium splendens (Gaudichaud), oviposition into the midvein also disrupted vascular bundle integrity and often caused death of the distal portions of the pinnule.
