2. Variable Topology Structure Design and Topology Analysis of a Variable-degree-of-freedom Single-loop Mechanism

Abstract

The degree of freedom of a special single-loop mechanism will change after passing through some special positions, which will lead to the change of its topology, kinematics/dynamics performance, and it is suitable for different application backgrounds. Firstly, a single-loop parallel mechanism composed of eight rotating pairs (R) is studied and designed, which has three motion modes: two degrees of freedom, four degrees of freedom and three degrees of freedom respectively, corresponding to three mechanisms. Then, the three main topological characteristics of the mechanism, such as position and orientation characteristic, degree of freedom and coupling degree, are analyzed and calculated in three motion modes, and the stability and transferability of the topological structures of the three mechanisms are analyzed. At the same time, the forward and inverse position solutions of the mechanism in motion modes 1 and 3 are analyzed. The work in this research provides a foundation for the research of reconfigurable parallel mechanisms based on this single-loop mechanism unit with variable degrees of freedom.

Abstract

The determination of the mobility of parallel mechanisms (PM) is a fundamental problem. An automatic and intelligent analysis platform will be a significant tool for the design and optimization of mechanical systems. Based on the theory of position and orientation characteristics (POC) equations, a systematic approach to computer-aided mobility analysis of PMs is presented in this paper. First, a digital model for topological structures which has a mapping relationship with position and orientation characteristics of mechanism is proposed. It describes not only the dimension of the motion output, but also gives the mapping relationship between the output characteristic and the axis of the kinematic joints. Secondly, algorithmic rules are established that convert the union and intersection operations of POC into the binary logical operations and the automatic analysis of POC are realized. Then, the algorithm of the automatic mobility analysis of PMs and its implementation with VC++ are written .The mobility and its properties (POC) will also be analyzed and displayed automatically after introducing by users of the data of topological structures representation. Abstract

Thermal protection system (TPS) is of great significance to launch hypersonic flight and landing process of hypersonic vehicles, which can effectively shield the hypersonic vehicle from severe aerodynamic heating encountered. Phenolic aerogels play an important role in TPS due to their characteristics of low density, high porosity, and low thermal conductivity. However, phenolic aerogel is easy to be oxidized at elevated temperatures under oxidizing environments, which severely limits its large-scale application as thermal insulation materials in TPS. In this study, a novel TiB2–B4C/carbon (TB/C) aerogel composite was synthesized by introducing TiB2 and B4C particles into phenolic aerogels through quick-gelation and mechanical mixing. The developed aerogel composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, thermal analysis, etc., to evaluate their microstructure, oxidation resistance, and mechanical properties. Experimental evidence showed that TiB2 and B4C particles reacted with the oxygen-containing molecules to form TiO2–B2O3 layer, which effectively improved oxidation resistance and mechanical properties of phenolic aerogel composites.

Abstract

The POC theory of topological structure design and analysis for PMs is established by Chinese scholars. The 12 topological characteristics proposed are innate topological invariants of the mechanism which reflect the essential features of structural theory, kinematics and dynamics. But the process of computation and analysis is complicated. In this paper, the principle, algorithm and implementation of computer-aided topological structure analysis of PMs are studied. Firstly, a symbolic description system for PMs is presented to describe the order of the kinematic joints and their orientation relations in a chain, and a kind of matrix expression is promoted to describe the POC set of chain. Then, according to the spatial dependence of the POC set element, the rules of union operation and intersection operation are developed, and the automatic calculation and analysis of POC set, the degree of freedom (DOF) are realized. Consequently, the optimal decomposition algorithm of PMs is studied based on the mechanism composition principle of the ordered single-open-chain (SOC) unit, and the coupling degree is obtained automatically. Finally, the automatic analysis software is developed by VC++, and a case study is presented for a 3T1R PM. The results show that the proposed union and intersection rules are effective and the method of structural decomposition is correct. The algorithm and software proposed are helpful to easily calculate and analysis the topological structure of PMs for more mechanism researchers and engineers.
