32. Dynamic Effects of Biochar on the Bacterial Community Structure in Soil Contaminated with Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Abstract

Amending soil with biochar is an effective soil remediation strategy for organic contaminants. This study investigated the dynamic effects of wheat straw biochar on the bacterial community structure during remediation by high-throughput sequencing. The wheat straw biochar amended into the soil significantly reduced the bioavailability and toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Biochar amendment helped to maintain the bacterial diversity in the PAH-contaminated soil. The relationship between the immobilization of PAHs and the soil bacterial diversity fit a quadratic model. Before week 12 of the incubation, the incubation time was the main factor contributing to the changes in the soil bacterial community structure. However, biochar greatly affected the bacterial community structure after 12 weeks of amendment, and the effects were dependent upon the biochar type. Amendment with biochar mainly facilitated the growth of rare bacterial genera (relative abundance of 0.01–1%) in the studied soil. Therefore, the application of wheat straw biochar into PAH-contaminated soil can reduce the environmental risks of PAHs and benefit the soil microbial ecology.

Abstract

The effect of oxalic acid on phenanthrene sorption was varied from that on pyrene sorption. 1.0 mg L-1 of oxalic acid inhibited phenanthrene sorption, whereas 20, 50 and 100 mg L-1 of oxalic acid enhanced the sorption. However, pyrene sorption onto biochar was all inhibited among different concentrations of oxalic acid. New functional groups and increased polarity were observed in the biochar coexisted with oxalic acid, moreover, a high concentration of oxalic acid led to an increased specific surface area of the biochar. These changed factors contributed to biochar sorption to phenanthrene, which was dominated by surface adsorption. Weakened aromaticity and increased release of dissolved organic carbon from biochar may have been the main reason for inhibited pyrene sorption onto biochar by oxalic acid. Therefore, this study suggested that root exudates could greatly influence the sorption behavior of biochar towards PAHs in soil rhizosphere, which deserves attention in agricultural systems. Abstract

This study evaluated the effects of the soil amendments biochar, activated carbon (AC), and attapulgite (APG) on the assessment of pentachlorobenzene (PeCB) bioavailability to earthworms ( Eisenia foetida) using the hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD) extraction method. The results showed that the amendment of soil with biochar and AC, rather than APG, significantly reduced the bioavailability of PeCB in soil being uptaken by earthworms ( p < 0.05). After 1 week aging, the HPCD extraction efficiency of PeCB in biochar - or AC - amended soils decreased relative to that in unamended soils. This reduction was greater compared with the declining extent of PeCB uptaken by earthworms in biochar - or AC - amended soils relative to unamended soils. This could underestimate the bioavailability of PeCB in the amended soils using HPCD extraction method. However, when aging period exceeded 24 weeks, there were diminished differences between earthworm uptake and chemical method results. This suggests a better assessment of the bioavailability of PeCB in the amended soil using HPCD extraction method. Therefore, HPCD extraction method could result in an underestimation of the bioavailability of PeCB in soils amended with biochar - or AC - during a short-term aging period. However, during a long term aging period with these soil amendments, HPCD extraction method was still a suitable tool to assess the bioavailability of PeCB in soil to the uptake by earthworms. 49. Theoretical investigation of congener-specific soil sorption of polychlorinated biphenyls by DFT computation and potent QSAR analyses.

Abstract

Purpose: Few studies have been conducted to understand well the underlying soil sorptive mechanism due to the limited experimental determination for the enormous number of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners. The objective of this paper was to obtain further insights into the soil sorption behavior of PCBs with exploration of the sorptive mechanism at the molecular level for sorption affinity, which could be anticipated to help explore the migration fates and assess the bioavailability of PCBs in soil. Materials and methods: Soil sorption coefficients of 52 kinds of PCB congeners were collected in this paper. The geometries of PCBs were fully optimized within Gaussian 03 suite of programs, and 27 molecular descriptors which describe the electronic and thermodynamic properties were finally determined with optimized structures after optimization. The quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) for predicting the soil sorption of PCBs were developed by the combination of density functional theory (DFT) computation and partial least squares analyses, which maximized the correlation between the DFT-calculated properties and soil sorption of PCBs. The QSAR was critically validated with better performance in sensitivity, robustness, interpretation and prediction, and specific description of the applicability domain. Results and discussion: For the successfully developed QSAR, R and Q were respectively recorded as 0.922 and 0.896, and R and Q were respectively recorded as 0.905 and 0.914, which demonstrated the stability and predictability of the model. The molecular electronegativity of PCBs by DFT was significantly indicative of a positive correlation with sorption potency, while polarizability had a negative correlation with it. QSAR analyses also revealed the favorable structural requirement of more chlorination at meta/ para sites for soil sorption. It was implied that the soil sorption should be largely ascribed to the electrostatic interaction between PCBs and soil organic matter. Nevertheless, the thermodynamic stability and hydrophobicity related to the molecular entropy increment of PCBs were also beneficial to enhancing soil sorption. Conclusions: QSAR analyses particularly indicated the strong dependence of variation of soil sorption on molecular electronic properties, such as electronegativity and polarizability, which suggested the predominance of electrostatic interaction with soil organic matter. Meta/ para chlorination was illustrated as a preferable structural requirement for soil sorption. In addition, the thermodynamic stability and hydrophobicity driven by entropy increment were also effective for soil sorption.
