6. Ultra-high harmonic conversion of a seeded free-electron laser via harmonic optical klystron

Abstract

External seeded free-electron lasers (FELs) are compelling tools for generating fully coherent EUV and soft X-ray radiations. Echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG), the most typical representative of external seeded FELs, has witnessed a remarkable growth of fully coherent FELs in the last decade, continuously evolving towards higher harmonic conversions and shorter wavelengths. Ultra-high harmonic generation is imperative in the field of FELs. This paper presents a novel method for generating FEL radiation with ultra-high harmonic conversion, utilizing harmonic optical klystron in combination with EEHG. This method can effectively increase the harmonic conversion order to about 90. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations show that intense and almost fully coherent FEL pulses can be generated with a wavelength of 3 nm. At the same time, the seed laser intensity required by this scheme is lower compared to nominal EEHG, thus facilitating the generation of high-repetition-rate seeded FELs.

Abstract

The photodissociation dynamics of the hydrogen sulfide cation (H2S+) (X2B1) were investigated using the time-sliced velocity map ion imaging technique. S+ (4Su) product images were measured at four photolysis wavelengths around 393.70 nm, corresponding to the excitation of the H2S+ (X2B1) cation to the A2A1 (0, 8, 0) state. The raw images and the derived total kinetic energy releases (TKERs) spectra exhibited partial rotational resolution for the H2 products. A sensitive dependence on the photolysis wavelength was observed in the TKER spectra and anisotropy parameters. Within a narrow excitation energy range of ∼12 cm−1, the H2 products showed two distinct rotational excitations. Furthermore, clear differences in anisotropy parameters were observed. These phenomena indicate that the rotational excitation of the H2S+ ions plays a role in the non-adiabatic photodissociation dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Identification of the tyrosine phosphorylation (pY)-dependent interactome of immune co-receptors is crucial for understanding signal pathways involved in immunotherapy. However, identifying the motif-specific interactome for each pY commonly found on these multi-phosphorylated membrane proteins remains challenging. Here, we describe a photoaffinity-based chemical proteomic approach to dissect the motif-specific cytoplasmic interactomes of the critical immune co-receptor CD28. Various full-length CD28 cytoplasmic tails (CD28cyto) with defined pY and selectively replaced photo-methionine were synthesized and applied to explore three pY-motif-dependent CD28cyto interactomes. We identified a stand-alone interaction of phospholipase PLCG1 with the Y191 motif with enhanced affinity for the sequence neighboring the transmembrane domain. Importantly, taking advantage of native top-down mass spectrometry with a 193-nm laser, we discovered the direct association of a previously undefined pY218 motif with the kinase PKCθ through its C2 domain. This synthetic CD28cyto-based photoaffinity proteomic approach is generically applicable to the study of other immune co-receptors with multiple pY sites on their linear cytoplasmic tail.

Abstract

On-surface synthesis (OSS) involving relatively high energy barriers remains challenging due to a typical dilemma: firm molecular anchor is required to prevent molecular desorption upon the reaction, whereas sufficient lateral mobility is crucial for subsequent coupling and assembly. By locking the molecular precursors on the substrate then unlocking them during the reaction, we present a strategy to address this challenge. High-yield synthesis based on well-defined decarboxylation, intermediate transition and hexamerization is demonstrated, resulting in an extended and ordered network exclusively composed of the newly-synthesized macrocyclic compound. Thanks to the steric hindrance of its maleimide group, we attain a preferential selection of the coupling. This work unlocks a promising path to enrich the reaction types and improve the coupling selectivity hence the structual homogeneity of the final product for OSS.

Abstract

Transition metal carbides have sparked unprecedented enthusiasm as high-performance catalysts in recent years. Still, the catalytic properties of copper (Cu) carbide remain unexplored. By introducing subsurface carbon (C) to Cu(111), displacement reaction of proton in carboxyl acid group with single Cu atom is demonstrated at the atomic scale and room temperature. Its occurrence is attributed to the C-doping induced local charge of surface Cu atoms (up to +0.30 e/atom), which accelerates the rate of on-surface deprotonation via reduction of the corresponding energy barrier, thus enabling the instant displacement of a proton with a Cu atom when the molecules land on the surface. Abstract

A superconducting linear accelerator operating in continuous-wave mode could produce X-ray free electron lasers (XFEL) at megahertz repetition rate, with the capability that delivering wide spectral range coherent radiation to multi end stations. In this Letter, the energy recovery Linac (ERL) mode is proposed to flexibly control the electron beam energy for a continuous-wave superconducting Linac. Theoretical investigations and multi-dimensional numerical simulations are applied to the Linac case of Shanghai high-repetition-rate XFEL and extreme light facility. The results show that, with ERL operation in the last 25 cryo-modules, the strict requirements on RF power system could be significantly relaxed. And if one exhaust the RF power, the maximum electron beam energy can be enhanced from 8.74 GeV to 11.41GeV in ERL mode. Abstract

Produced by both nature and human activities, sulfur dioxide (SO2) is an important species in the earth's atmosphere. SO2 has also been found in the atmospheres of other planets and satellites in the solar system. The photoabsorption cross sections and photodissociation of SO2 have been studied for several decades. In this paper, we reported the experimental results for photodissociation dynamics of SO2 via the G ̃ 1B1 state. By analyzing the images from the time-sliced velocity map ion imaging method, the vibrational state population distributions and anisotropy parameters were obtained for the O(1D2) + SO(X3Σ−, a1Δ, b1Σ+) and O(1S0) + SO(X3Σ−) channels, and the branching ratios for the channels O(1D2) + SO(X3Σ−), O(1D2) + SO(a1Δ), and O(1D2) + SO(b1Σ+) were determined to be ∼0.3, ∼0.6, and ∼0.1, respectively. The SO products were dominant in electronically and rovibrationally excited states, which may have yet unrecognized roles in the upper planetary atmosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
