The optical counterparts of skyrmions have recently been constructed with diverse topological types and by different degrees of freedom, such as field, spins, and Stokes vectors, exhibiting extensive potential in modern information science. However, there is currently no method capable of generating multiple types of optical skyrmions in free space. Here, we present a simple approach for realizing hybrid optical skyrmions of electric field vectors, spin angular momentum and Stokes vectors in a same structured light field. We show that a vector beam truncated by an annular aperture can form an electric field skyrmion in the diffracted light field. In the meantime, electric field meron pairs, spin skyrmions and Stokes skyrmions can be generated by tuning spin-orbital coupling of the incident light.

Particles trapped by optical tweezers, behaving as mechanical oscillators in an optomechanical system, have found tremendous applications in various disciplines and are still arousing research interest in frontier and fundamental physics. These optically trapped oscillators provide compact particle confinement and strong oscillator stiffness. But these features are limited by the size of the focused light spot of a laser beam, which is typically restricted by the optical diffraction limit. Here, we propose to build an optical potential well with fine features assisted by the nonlinearity of the particle material, which is independent of the optical diffraction limit. We show that the potential well shape can have super-oscillation-like features and a Fano-resonance-like phenomenon, and the width of the optical trap is far below the diffraction limit. A particle with nonlinearity trapped by an ordinary optical beam provides a new platform with a sub-diffraction potential well and can have applications in high-accuracy optical manipulation and high-precision metrology., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Controlling light at the nanoscale by exploiting ultra-confined polaritons - hybrid light and matter waves - in various van der Waals (vdW) materials empowers unique opportunities for many nanophotonic on-chip technologies. So far, mainstream approaches have relied interfacial techniques (e.g., refractive optics, meta-optics and moire engineering) to manipulate polariton wavefront. Here, we propose that orbital angular momentum (OAM) of incident light could offer a new degree of freedom to structure vdW polaritons. With vortex excitations, we observed a new class of accelerating polariton waves - Airy-like hyperbolic phonon polaritons (PhPs) in high-symmetry orthorhombic vdW crystal {\alpha}-MoO3. In analogous to the well-known Airy beams in free space, such Airy-like PhPs also exhibit self-accelerating, nonspreading and self-healing characteristics. Interestingly, the helical phase gradient of vortex beam leads to asymmetry excitation of polaritons, as a result, the Airy-like PhPs possess asymmetric propagation feature even with a symmetric mode, analogous to the asymmetry hyperbolic shear polaritons in low-symmetry crystals. Our finding highlights the potential of OAM to manipulate polaritons in vdW materials, which could be further extended into a variety of applications such as active structured polaritonic devices.

Plasmonic vortex lenses (PVLs), producing vortex modes, known as plasmonic vortices (PVs), in the process of plasmonic spin-orbit coupling, provide a promising platform for the realization of many optical vortex-based applications. Very recently, it has been reported that a single PVL can generate multiple PVs. This work exploits the representation theory of finite groups, reveals the symmetry origin of the generated PVs, and derives a new conservation relation based on symmetry principles. Specifically, the symmetry principles divide the near field of the PVL into regions, designate integers, which are the topological charges, to the regions, and, particularly, give an upper bound to the topological charge of the PV at the center of the PVL. Further application of the symmetry principles to the spin-orbit coupling process leads to a new conservation relation. Based on this relation, a two-step procedure is suggested to link the angular momentum of the incident field with the one of the generated PVs through the symmetries of the PVL. This theory is well demonstrated by numerical calculations. This work provides an alternative but essential symmetry perspective on the dynamics of spin-orbit coupling in PVLs, forms a strong complement for the physical investigations performed before, and therefore lays down a solid foundation for flexibly manipulating the PVs for emerging vortex-based nanophotonic applications., Comment: 23 pages and 3 figures

In optics, we can generate vortex beams using specific methods such as spiral phase plates or computer generated holograms. While, in nature, it is worth noting that water can produce vortices by a circularly symmetrical hole. So, if a light beam can generate vortex when it is diffracted by an aperture? Here, we show that the light field in the Fresnel region of the diffracted circularly polarized beam carries orbital angular momentum, which can transfer to the trapped particles and make orbital rotation.

Autocorrelation measurement based on second-harmonic generation (SHG), the best-known technique for measuring the temporal duration of ultrashort pulses, could date back to the birth of ultrafast lasers. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate that such well-established technique can also be used to measure the orbital angular momentum of ultrashort Laguerre-Gauss (LG) pulses. By analysing the far-field pattern of the SHG signal, the full spatial structure of ultrashort LG pulses, including both azimuthal and radial indices, are unambiguously determined. Our results provide an important advancement for the well-established autocorrelation technique by extending it to reach its full potential in laser characterization, especially for structured ultrashort pulses.

Nanophotonic platforms such as metasurfaces, achieving arbitrary phase profiles within ultrathin thickness, emerge as miniaturized, ultracompact and kaleidoscopic optical vortex generators. However, it is often required to segment or interleave independent subarray metasurfaces to multiplex optical vortices in a single nano device, which in turn affects the compactness and channel capacity of the device. Here, inspired by phyllotaxis patterns in pine cones and sunflowers, we theoretically prove and experimentally report that multiple optical vortices can be produced in a single compact phyllotaxis nanosieve, both in free space and on a chip, where one metaatom may contribute to many vortices simultaneously. The time resolved dynamics of on chip interference wavefronts between multiple plasmonic vortices was revealed by ultrafast time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy. Our nature inspired optical vortex generator would facilitate various vortex related optical applications, including structured wavefront shaping, free space and plasmonic vortices, and high capacity information metaphotonics.

Optical trapping describes the interaction between light and matter to manipulate micro-objects through momentum transfer. In the case of 3D trapping with a single beam, this is termed optical tweezers. Optical tweezers are a powerful and non-invasive tool for manipulating small objects, which have become indispensable in many fields, including physics, biology, soft condensed matter, amongst others. In the early days, optical trapping were typically used with a single Gaussian beam. In recent years, we have witnessed the rapid progress in the use of structured light beams with customized phase, amplitude and polarization in optical trapping. Unusual beam properties, such as phase singularities on-axis, propagation invariant nature, have opened up novel capabilities to the study of micromanipulation in liquid, air and vacuum. Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is an ideal candidate for quantum sensors because of its excellent optical and coherence property. However, previous studies are usually conducted at low or room temperature. The lack of full knowledge of coherence properties of the NV center at high temperature limits NV's further applications. Here, we systematically explore the coherence properties of the NV center ensemble at temperatures from 300 K to 600 K. Coherence time $T_2$ decreases rapidly from $184 \mu s$ at 300 K to $30 \mu s$ at 600 K, which is attributed to the interaction with paramagnetic impurities. Single-quantum and double-quantum relaxation rates show an obvious temperature-dependent behavior as well, and both of them are dominated by the two phonon Raman process. While the inhomogeneous dephasing time $T_2^*$ and thermal echo decoherence time $T_{TE}$ remain almost unchanged as temperature rises. Since $T_{TE}$ changed slightly as temperature rises, a thermal-echo-based thermometer is demonstrated to have a sensitivity of $41 mK/\sqrt{Hz}$ at 450 K. We theoretically and experimentally studied a novel class of vortex beams named open vortex beams (OVBs). Such beams are generated using Gaussian beams diffracted by partially blocked fork-shaped gratings (PB-FSGs).The analytical model of OVBs in the near field and far field is given by superpositions of Hypergeometric (HyG) modes. Unlike conventional integer and fractional vortex beams, the OVBs can have both an open ring structure and an integer topological charge (TC). The TC is decided by the circumference covered by the open ring. It is also quantitatively shown that a $\pi/2$ rotation of the open ring occurs in the propagation of an OVB due to the Gouy phase shift. Futhermore, we demonstrate experimental generation and detection of OVBs. Our experimental results are in very good agreement with the theory. We believe that the OVB can be the potential candidate for numerous applications, such as particle manipulation, quantum information and optical metrology.

A general orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode selection principle is put forward involving the rotationally symmetric superposition of chiral states. This principle is not only capable of explaining the operation of spiral zone plate holograms and suggesting that naturally occurring rotationally symmetric patterns could be inadvertent sources of vortex beams, but more importantly, it enables the systematic and flexible generation of structured OAM waves in general.
