Abstract

Random numbers are at the heart of diverse fields, ranging from simulations of stochastic processes to classical and quantum cryptography. The requirement for true randomness in these applications has motivated various proposals for generating random numbers based on the inherent randomness of quantum systems. The generation of true random numbers with arbitrarily defined probability distributions is highly desirable for applications, but it is very challenging. Here we show that single-photon quantum walks can generate multi-bit random numbers with on-demand probability distributions, when the required ``coin'' parameters are found with the gradient descent (GD) algorithm. Our theoretical and experimental results exhibit high fidelity for various selected distributions. This GD-enhanced single-photon system provides a convenient way for building flexible and reliable quantum random number generators. Multi-bit random numbers are a necessary resource for high-dimensional quantum key distribution.

26. The effect of congruent emotional context on semantic memory during discourse comprehension.

Abstract

This study examined the effect of emotional context on the semantic memory of subsequent emotional words during discourse comprehension in two eye-tracking experiments. Four-sentence discourses were used as experimental materials. The first three sentences established an emotional or neutral context, while the fourth contained an emotional target word consistent with the preceding emotional context's valence. The discourses were presented twice using the text change paradigm, where the target words were replaced with strongly - or weakly-related words during the second presentation. Thus, four conditions were included in the present study: Emotional-strongly-related, Emotional-weakly-related, Neutral-strongly-related and Neutral-weakly-related. In Experiment 1, negative contexts and negative target words were used, whereas in Experiment 2, positive contexts and positive target words were used. The results revealed a semantic relatedness effect, whereby the strongly-related words have lower change detection accuracy, longer reading times and more fixations in both Experiments 1 and 2. Furthermore, across both experiments, the magnitude of the semantic relatedness effect was greater in the emotionally congruent contexts than in the neutral contexts. These results suggest that emotional context could increase efforts to change the discrimination of subsequent words and demonstrate an important role of emotional context on semantic memory during discourse processing. Abstract

Tonal music perception relies on hierarchical tension and relaxation, which is linked to predictive processes. However, the relationship between local and global processing in shaping tension is not fully understood. Our EEG and behavioral study manipulated musical congruence at local and global levels, revealing that local processing effects could be influenced by global factors. We found that when both local and global congruence were violated, there was a smaller P600 following increased beta oscillations, compared to when only global congruence was violated. This suggests that rapid fluctuations in tension during resolution processes resulted from limited modulation to predictive models. Furthermore, a higher amplitude of P600 occurred when local congruence was violated but global congruence was maintained, compared to when both were congruent, indicating that predictive updating required greater effort. However, local effects had the potential to override global effects, as evidenced by the disappearance of EEG effects induced by global incongruence in locally incongruent conditions and the resulting faster-changing tension curve. These findings suggest that local congruency plays a critical role in processing musical tension and holds a dominant position in music processing.
