The natural bulk van der Waals heterostructures compound 6R-TaS2 consists of alternate stacking 1T- and 1H-TaS2 monolayers, creating a unique system that incorporates charge-density-wave (CDW) order and superconductivity (SC) in distinct monolayers. Here, after confirming that the 2D nature of the lattice is preserved up to 8 GPa in 6R-TaS2, we documented an unusual evolution of CDW and SC by conducting highpressure electronic transport measurements. Upon compression, we observe a gradual suppression of CDW within the 1T-layers, while the SC exhibits a dome-shaped behavior that terminates at a critical pressure Pc around 2.9 GPa. By taking account of the fact that the substantial suppression of SC is concomitant with the complete collapse of CDW order at Pc, we argue that the 6R-TaS2 behaves like a stack of Josephson junctions and thus the suppressed superconductivity can be attributed to the weakening of Josephson coupling associated with the presence of CDW fluctuations in the 1T-layers. Furthermore, the SC reversely enhances above Pc, implying the development of emergent superconductivity in the 1T-layers after the melting of T-layer CDW orders. These results show that the 6R-TaS2 not only provides a promising platform to explore emergent phenomena but also serves as a model system to study the complex interactions between competing electronic states., Comment: 21 pages,5 figures

The ternary chalcogenide Bi2Rh3Se2 was found to be a charge density wave (CDW) superconductor with a 2*2 periodicity. The key questions regarding the underlying mechanism of CDW state and its interplay with lattice and electronic properties remains to be explored. Here, based on the systematic Raman scattering investigations on single crystalline Bi2Rh3Se2, we observed the fingerprinting feature of CDW state, a collective amplitude mode at 39 cm-1. The temperature evolution of Raman shift and line width for this amplitude mode can be well described by the critical behavior of two-dimensional (2D) Ising model, suggesting the interlayer interactions of Bi2Rh3Se2 is negligible when CDW state is formed, as a consequence, the quantum fluctuations play an important role at low temperature. Moreover, temperature dependence of Raman shift for Ag9 mode deviates significantly from the expected anharmonic behavior when approaching the CDW transition temperature 240 K, demonstrated that strong electron-phonon coupling plays a key role in the formation of CDW. Our results reveal that Bi2Rh3Se2 is an intriguing quasi-2D system to explore electronic quantum phase transition and modulate the correlations between CDW and superconductivity.

The unique electronic and crystal structures driven by external pressure in transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) can host emergent quantum states. Here we report pressure-induced metallization, nontrivial $Z_2$ band topology and superconductivity in TMC $\mathrm{Ta}_2 \mathrm{Ni}_3 \mathrm{Te}_5$. Our electrical transport measurements show that the metallization emerges at 3.3 GPa, followed by appearance of the superconductivity at $P_{\mathrm{c}}$ = 21.3 GPa with $T_{\mathrm{c}} \sim$ 0.4 K. Room-temperature synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments demonstrate the stability of the pristine orthorhombic structure upon compression. Our first-principles calculations further reveal a topological phase transition (from $Z_2=0$ to $Z_2=1$), which occurs after $\mathrm{Ta}_2 \mathrm{Ni}_3 \mathrm{Te}_5$ is turned into an electron-hole compensated semimetal by pressure. The pressure-induced superconductivity at $P_{\mathrm{c}}$ could be attributed to the abruptly enhanced density of states at the Fermi level. Here we report the discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional $\mathrm{Ta}_2 \mathrm{PdSe}_6$, through a combination of electrical transport, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and theoretical calculations. Our transport measurements show that the superconductivity appears at a critical pressure $P_{\mathrm{c}} \sim 18.3$ GPa and is robust upon further compression up to $62.6$ GPa. The estimated upper critical field $\mu_0 H_{\mathrm{c} 2}(0)$ in the pressurized $\mathrm{Ta}_2 \mathrm{PdSe}_6$ is much lower than the Pauli limiting field, in contrast to the case in its isostructural analogs $M_2 \mathrm{Pd}_{\mathrm{x}} X_5$ $(M=\mathrm{Nb}$, Ta; $X=\mathrm{S}, \mathrm{Se})$. Concomitant with the occurrence of superconductivity, anomalies in pressuredependent transport properties are observed, including sign reversal of Hall coefficient, abnormally enhanced resistance, and dramatically suppressed magnetoresistance. Meanwhile, room-temperature synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments reveal the stability of the pristine monoclinic structure (space group $C 2 / m$ ) upon compression. The discovery of multiple charge-density-wave (CDW) orders in superconducting cuprates and Kagome CsV3Sb5 has offered a unique milieu for studying the interplay of CDW and superconductivity and altered our perspective on their nature. Here, we report a high-pressure study of quasi-one-dimensional CDW material CuTe through ultralow-temperature (400 mK) electrical transport and temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations. We provide solid evidence that the pristine CDW order (CDW1) transforms into a distinct CDW order (CDW2) at ~6.5 GPa. Calculations show that the driving force of CDW1 is due to the nesting effect and that of CDW2 probably arises from the electronic correlated interaction. Strikingly, pressure-induced superconductivity is observed with a dome-like phase diagram and its transition displays an extraordinary broadening along with the crossover from CDW1 to CDW2. These results demonstrate that pressurized CuTe provides a promising playground for understanding the intricated interplay of multiple CDWs and superconductivity., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Kagome lattice offers unique opportunities for the exploration of unusual quantum states of correlated electrons. Here, we report on the observation of superconductivity in a kagome single crystal Pd3P2S8 when a semiconducting to metallic transition is driven by pressure. High-pressure resistance measurements show that the metallization and superconductivity are simultaneously observed at about 11 GPa. With increasing pressure, the superconducting critical temperature Tc is monotonously enhanced from 2.6 K to a maximum 7.7 K at ~52 GPa. Interestingly, superconductivity retains when the pressure is fully released. Synchrotron XRD and Raman experiments consistently evidence that the emergence of superconductivity is accompanied with an amorphization and the retainability of superconductivity upon decompression can be attributed to the irreversibility of the amorphization.

Through either elements intercalation or application of pressure, transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-TiSe2 exhibits superconductivity in proximity to a charge density wave (CDW) quantum critical point (QCP), thus providing an ideal avenue to study the correlation between the two symmetry-breaking exotic quantum electronic states. We report herein that, in addition to the well-known superconducting dome that emerges within the low pressure range of 2 - 4 GPa and peaks with the maximal Tc of about 1.8 K, the pressure induces another separate superconducting transition starting around 15 GPa with a substantially higher Tc that reaches 5.6 K at about 21.5 GPa. The high-pressure X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy measurements unveil that the superconductivity reentrant is caused by a first-order structural phase transition (from P-3m1 space group to Pnma space group), which is also supported by the density functional theory calculation. A comparative theoretical calculation also reveals that the conventional phonon-mediated mechanism can account for the superconductivity of 1T-TiSe2 under low pressure, while the electron-phonon coupling of 4O-TiSe2 under high pressure is too weak to induce the superconductivity with a Tc as high as 5.6 K. This implies that the emergent superconductivity in the 4O-TiSe2 may have an unconventional origin. Understanding the interplay among different magnetic exchange interactions and its physical consequences, especially in the presence of itinerant electrons and disorders, remains one of the central themes in condensed matter physics. In this vein, the coupling between antiferromagnetic and spin glass orders may lead to large exchange bias, a property of potential broad technological applications. In this article, we report the coexistence of antiferromagnetic order and spin glass behaviors in a quasi-one-dimensional iron telluride TaFe$_{1+x}$Te$_3$ ($x$=0.25). Its antiferromagnetism is believed to arise from the antiferromagnetic interchain coupling between the ferromagnetically aligned FeTe chains along the $b$-axis, while the spin glassy state stems from the disordered Fe interstitials. This dichotomic role of chain and interstitial sublattices is responsible for the large exchange bias observed at low temperatures, with the interstitial Fe acting as the uncompensated moment and its neighboring Fe chain providing the source for its pinning. This iron-based telluride may thereby represent a new paradigm to study the large family of transition metal chalcogenides whose magnetic order or even the dimensionality can be tuned to a large extent, forming a fertile playground to manipulate or switch the spin degrees of freedom thereof.

Quasi-two-dimensional kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) have attracted much recent interest due to exotic quantum phenomena such as unconventional superconductivity, topological charge order and giant anomalous Hall effect. Here we report pressure-induced reemergent superconductivity in CsV3Sb5 by electrical transport measurements under high pressures up to 47.9 GPa. We show that the superconducting critical temperature Tc is first enhanced by pressure and reaches its first maximum ~ 8.9 K at 0.8 GPa, then the Tc is suppressed by pressure and cannot be detected above 7.5 GPa, forming a dome-shaped superconducting phase diagram. Remarkably, upon further compression above 16.5 GPa, a new superconducting state arises, of which Tc is enhanced by pressure to a second maximum ~ 5.0 K and the reemergent superconductivity keeps robust up to 47.9 GPa. Combined with high-pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements that demonstrate the stability of the pristine hexagonal phase up to 43.1 GPa, we suggest that the reemergence of superconductivity in the V-based superconductor could be attributed to a pressure-induced Lifshitz transition., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figues and published in Phys. We investigate the pressure evolution of the anomalous Hall effect in magnetic topological semimetal Co3Sn2S2 in diamond anvil cells with pressures up to 44.9-50.9 GPa. No evident trace of structural phase transition is detected through synchrotron x-ray diffraction over the measured pressure range of 0.2-50.9 GPa. We find that the anomalous Hall resistivity and the ferromagnetism are monotonically suppressed as increasing pressure and almost vanish around 22 GPa. The anomalous Hall conductivity varies non-monotonically against pressure at low temperatures, involving competition between original and emergent Weyl nodes. Combined with first-principle calculations, we reveal that the intrinsic mechanism due to the Berry curvature dominates the anomalous Hall effect under high pressure., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Topological superconductivity with Majorana bound states, which are critical to implement nonabelian quantum computation, may be realized in three-dimensional semimetals with nontrivial topological feature, when superconducting transition occurs in the bulk. Here, we report pressure-induced superconductivity in a transition-metal dipnictide NbAs2. The emergence of superconductivity is not accompanied by any structural phase transition up to the maximum experimental pressure of 29.8 GPa, as supported by pressure-dependent synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Intriguingly, the Raman study reveals rapid phonon mode hardening and broadening above 10 GPa, in coincident with the superconducting transition. Using first principle calculations, we determine Fermi surface change induced by pressure, which steadily increases the density of states without breaking the electron-hole compensation. Noticeably, the main hole pocket of NbAs2 encloses one time-reversal-invariant momenta of the monoclinic lattice, suggesting NbAs2 as a candidate of topological superconductors., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Transition-metal chalcogenides host various phases of matter, such as charge-density wave (CDW), superconductors, and topological insulators or semimetals. Superconductivity and its competition with CDW in low-dimensional compounds have attracted much interest and stimulated considerable research. Here we report pressure induced superconductivity in a strong spin-orbit (SO) coupled quasi-one-dimensional (1D) transition-metal chalcogenide NbTe$_4$, which is a CDW material under ambient pressure. With increasing pressure, the CDW transition temperature is gradually suppressed, and superconducting transition, which is fingerprinted by a steep resistivity drop, emerges at pressures above 12.4 GPa. Under pressure $p$ = 69 GPa, zero resistance is detected with a transition temperature $T_c$ = 2.2 K and an upper critical field $H_{c2}$= 2 T. Topological semimetal, a novel state of quantum matter hosting exotic emergent quantum phenomena dictated by the non-trivial band topology, has emerged as a new frontier in condensed-matter physics. Very recently, a coexistence of triply degenerate points of band crossing and Weyl points near the Fermi level was theoretically predicted and immediately experimentally verified in single crystalline molybdenum phosphide (MoP). Here we show in this material the high-pressure electronic transport and synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We report the emergence of pressure-induced superconductivity in MoP with a critical temperature Tc of about 2 K at 27.6 GPa, rising to 3.7 K at the highest pressure of 95.0 GPa studied. No structural phase transitions is detected up to 60.6 GPa from the XRD. Meanwhile, the Weyl points and triply degenerate points topologically protected by the crystal symmetry are retained at high pressure as revealed by our DFT calculations. Among the family of TMDs, ReS2 takes a special position, which crystalizes in a unique distorted low-symmetry structure at ambient conditions. The interlayer interaction in ReS2 is rather weak, thus its bulk properties are similar to that of monolayer. However, how does compression change its structure and electronic properties is unknown so far. Here using ab initio crystal structure searching techniques, we explore the high-pressure phase transitions of ReS2 extensively and predict two new high-pressure phases. The ambient pressure phase transforms to a "distorted-1T" structure at very low pressure and then to a tetragonal I41/amd structure at around 90 GPa. The "distorted-1T" structure undergoes a semiconductor-metal transition (SMT) at around 70 GPa with a band overlap mechanism. Electron-phonon calculations suggest that the I41/amd structure is superconducting and has a critical superconducting temperature of about 2 K at 100 GPa. We further perform high-pressure electrical resistance measurements up to 102 GPa. Our experiments confirm the SMT and the superconducting phase transition of ReS2 under high pressure. Weyl semimetal defines a material with three dimensional Dirac cones which appear in pair due to the breaking of spatial inversion or time reversal symmetry. Superconductivity is the state of quantum condensation of paired electrons. Turning a Weyl semimetal into superconducting state is very important in having some unprecedented discoveries. In this work, by doing resistive measurements on a recently recognized Weyl semimetal TaP under pressure up to about 100 GPa, we observe superconductivity at about 70 GPa. The superconductivity retains when the pressure is released. The systematic evolutions of resistivity and magnetoresistance with pressure are well interpreted by the relative shift between the chemical potential and paired Weyl points. Calculations based on the density functional theory also illustrate the structure transition at about 70GPa, the phase at higher pressure may host superconductivity. Due to fundamental interest and potential applications in quantum computation, tremendous efforts have been invested to study topological superconductivity. However, bulk topological superconductivity seems to be difficult to realize and its mechanism is still elusive. Several possible routes to induce topological superconductivity have been proposed, including proximity efforts, doping or pressurizing a topological insulator or semimetal. Among them, the pressurizing is considered to be a clean way to tune the electronic structures. Here we report the discovery of a pressure-induced topological and superconducting phase of SnSe, a material which is highly focused recently due to its superior thermoelectric properties. In situ high-pressure electrical transport and synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements show that the superconductivity emerges along with the formation of a CsCl-type structural symmetry of SnSe above around 27 GPa, with a maximum critical temperature of 3.2 K at 39 GPa. Based on ab initio calculations, this CsCl-type SnSe is predicted to be a Dirac line nodes (DLN) semimetal in the absence of spin-orbit coupling, whose DLN states are protected by the coexistence of time-reversal and inversion symmetries. These results make CsCl-type SnSe an interesting model platform with simple crystal symmetry to study the interplay of topological physics and superconductivity., Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

The recent-discovered Sr$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ superconductor provides an alternative and ideal material base for investigating possible topological superconductivity. Here, we report that in Sr$_{0.065}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_3$, the ambient superconducting phase is gradually depressed upon the application of external pressure. At high pressure, a second superconducting phase emerges at above 6 GPa, with a maximum $T_c$ value of $\sim$8.3 K. The joint investigations of the high-pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction and electrical transport properties reveal that the re-emergence of superconductivity in Sr$_{0.065}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_3$ is closely related to the structural phase transition from ambient rhombohedral phase to high-pressure monoclinic phase around 6 GPa, and further to another high-pressure tetragonal phase above 25 GPa., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Many exotic physics anticipated in topological insulators require a gap to be opened for their topologica surface states by breaking time reversal symmetry. The gap opening has been achieved by doping magnetic impurities, which however inevitably create extra carriers and disorder that undermine the electronic transport. In contrast, the proximity to a ferromagnetic/ferrimagnetic insulator may improve the device quality, thus promises a better way to open the gap while minimizing the side-effects. Here, we grow thin single-crystal Sb1.9Bi0.1Te3 micro flakes on insulating ferrimagnet BaFe12O19 by using the van der Waals epitaxy technique. The micro flakes show a negative magnetoresistance in weak perpendicular fields below 50 K, which can be quenched by increasing temperature. The signature implies the weak localization effect as its origin, which is absent in intrinsic topological insulators, unless a surface state gap is opened. The surface state gap is estimated to be 10 meV by using the theory of the gap-induced weak localization effect. These results indicate that the magnetic proximity effect may open the gap for the topological surface attached to BaM insulating ferrimagnet. This heterostructure may pave the way for the realization of new physical effects as well as the potential applications of spintronics devices.

TaAs as one of the experimentally discovered topological Weyl semimetal has attracted intense interests recently. The ambient TaAs has two types of Weyl nodes which are not on the same energy level. As an effective way to tune lattice parameters and electronic interactions, high pressure is becoming a significant tool to explore new materials as well as their exotic states. Therefore, it is highly interesting to investigate the behaviors of topological Weyl fermions and possible structural phase transitions in TaAs under pressure. Here, with a combination of ab initio calculations and crystal structure prediction techniques, a new hexagonal P-6m2 phase is predicted in TaAs at pressure around 14 GPa. Surprisingly, this new phase is a topological semimetal with only single set of Weyl nodes exactly on the same energy level. The phase transition pressure from the experimental measurements, including electrical transport measurements and Raman spectroscopy, agrees with our theoretical prediction reasonably. Moreover, the P-6m2 phase seems to be quenched recoverable to ambient pressure, which increases the possibilities of further study on the exotic behaviors of single set of Weyl fermions, such as the interplay between surface states and other properties., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

YbMgGaO$_{4}$, a structurally perfect two-dimensional triangular lattice with odd number of electrons per unit cell and spin-orbit entangled effective spin-1/2 local moments of Yb$^{3+}$ ions, is likely to experimentally realize the quantum spin liquid ground state. We report the first experimental characterization of single crystal YbMgGaO$_{4}$ samples. Due to the spin-orbit entanglement, the interaction between the neighboring Yb$^{3+}$ moments depends on the bond orientations and is highly anisotropic in the spin space. We carry out the thermodynamic and the electron spin resonance measurements to confirm the anisotropic nature of the spin interaction as well as to quantitatively determine the couplings. Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a novel state of matter which refuses the conventional spin freezing even at 0 K. Experimentally searching for the structurally perfect candidates is a big challenge in condensed matter physics. Here we report the successful synthesis of a new spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ with R$\bar{3}$m symmetry. The compound with an ideal two-dimensional and spatial isotropic magnetic triangular-lattice has no site-mixing magnetic defects and no antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. No spin freezing down to 60 mK (despite $\Theta$$_w$ $\sim$ -4 K), the low-T power-law temperature dependence of heat capacity and nonzero susceptibility suggest that YbMgGaO$_4$ is a promising gapless ($\leq$ $|$$\Theta$$_w$$|$/100) QSL candidate. The residual spin entropy, which is accurately determined with a non-magnetic reference LuMgGaO$_4$, approaches zero ($<$ 0.6 \%). This indicates that the possible QSL ground state (GS) of the frustrated spin system has been experimentally achieved at the lowest measurement temperatures., Comment: 28 pages including supplementary materials, 4 figures, 33 references

Unsaturated magnetoresistance (MR) has been reported in WTe2, and remains irrepressible up to very high field. Intense optimization of the crystalline quality causes a squarely-increasing MR, as interpreted by perfect compensation of opposite carriers. Herein we report our observation of linear MR (LMR) in WTe2 crystals, the onset of which is first identified by constructing the mobility spectra of the MR at low fields. The LMR further intensifies and predominates at fields higher than 20 Tesla while the parabolic MR gradually decays. The LMR remains unsaturated up to a high field of 60 Tesla and persists, even at a high pressure of 6.2 GPa. Assisted by density functional theory calculations and detailed mobility spectra, we find the LMR to be robust against the applications of high field, broken carrier balance, and mobility suppression. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals a unique quasilinear energy dispersion near the Fermi level. Our results suggest that the robust LMR is the low bound of the unsaturated MR in WTe2.

As a new type of topological materials, ZrTe5 shows many exotic properties under extreme conditions. Utilizing resistance and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements under high pressure, while the resistance anomaly near 128 K is completely suppressed at 6.2 GPa, a fully superconducting transition emerges surprisingly. The superconducting transition temperature Tc increases with applied pressure, and reaches a maximum of 4.0 K at 14.6 GPa, followed by a slight drop but remaining almost constant value up to 68.5 GPa. At pressures above 21.2 GPa, a second superconducting phase with the maximum Tc of about 6.0 K appears and coexists with the original one to the maximum pressure studied in this work. In situ high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy combined with theoretical calculations indicate the observed two-stage superconducting behavior is correlated to the structural phase transition from ambient Cmcm phase to high-pressure C2/m phase around 6 GPa, and to a mixture of two high-pressure phases of C2/m and P-1 above 20 GPa. The combination of structure, transport measurement and theoretical calculations enable a complete understanding of the emerging exotic properties in three-dimensional topological materials happened under extreme environments., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures

Superconductivity commonly appears under pressure in charge density wave (CDW)-bearing transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), but has emerged so far only via either intercalation with electron donors or electrostatic doping in CDW-free TMDs. Theoretical calculations have predicted that the latter should be metallized through bandgap closure under pressure, but superconductivity remained elusive in pristine 2H-MoS2 upon substantial compression, where a pressure of up to 60 GPa only evidenced the metallic state. Here we report the emergence of superconductivity in pristine 2H-MoS2 at 90 GPa. The maximum onset transition temperature Tc(onset) of 11.5 K, the highest value among TMDs and nearly constant from 120 up to 200 GPa, is well above that obtained by chemical doping but comparable to that obtained by electrostatic doping. Tc(onset) is more than an order of magnitude larger than present theoretical expectations, raising questions on either the current calculation methodologies or the mechanism of the pressure-induced pairing state. Tungsten ditelluride has attracted intense research interest due to the recent discovery of its large unsaturated magnetoresistance up to 60 Tesla. Motivated by the presence of a small, sensitive Fermi surface of 5d electronic orbitals, we boost the electronic properties by applying a high pressure, and introduce superconductivity successfully. Superconductivity sharply appears at a pressure of 2.5 GPa, rapidly reaching a maximum critical temperature (Tc) of 7 K at around 16.8 GPa, followed by a monotonic decrease in Tc with increasing pressure, thereby exhibiting the typical dome-shaped superconducting phase. From theoretical calculations, we interpret the low-pressure region of the superconducting dome to an enrichment of the density of states at the Fermi level and attribute the high-pressure decrease in Tc to possible structural instability. Thus, Tungsten ditelluride may provide a new platform for our understanding of superconductivity phenomena in transition metal dichalcogenides.

Defect-induced ferromagnetism has triggered a lot of investigations and controversies. The major issue is that the induced ferromagnetic signal is so weak that it can sufficiently be accounted for by trace contamination. To resolve this issue, we studied the variation of the magnetic properties of SiC after neutron irradiation with fluence covering four orders of magnitude. A large paramagnetic component has been induced and scales up with defect concentration, which can be well accounted for by uncoupled divacancies. However, the ferromagnetic contribution is still weak and only appears in the low fluence range of neutrons or after annealing treatments. First-principles calculations hint towards a mutually exclusive role of the concentration of defects: Defects favor spin polarization at the expense of magnetic interaction. Combining both experimental and first-principles calculation results, the defect-induced ferromagnetism can be understood as a local effect which cannot be scaled up with the volume. We present a detailed investigation of the magnetic properties in SiC single crystals bombarded with neon ions. Through careful measuring of the magnetization of virgin and irradiated SiC, we decompose the magnetization of SiC into paramagnetic, superparamagnetic, and ferromagnetic contributions. The ferromagnetic contribution persists well above room temperature and exhibits a pronounced magnetic anisotropy. We present a comprehensive structural characterization of ferromagnetic SiC single crystals induced by Ne ion irradiation. The ferromagnetism has been confirmed by electron spin resonance and possible transition metal impurities can be excluded to be the origin of the observed ferromagnetism. Using X-ray diffraction and Rutherford backscattering/channeling spectroscopy, we estimate the damage to the crystallinity of SiC which mutually influences the ferromagnetism in SiC., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a novel state of matter with exotic excitations and was theoretically predicted to be realized most possibly in an S=1/2 kagome antiferromagnet. Experimentally searching for the candidate materials is a big challenge in condensed matter physics and only two such candidates were reported so far. Here we report the successful synthesis of a new spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet ZnCu3(OH)6SO4. No magnetic ordering is observed down to 50 mK, despite a moderately high Weiss temperature of {\theta}W ~ -79 K. It strongly suggests that the material is a new QSL candidate. Most interestingly, the magnetic specific heat clearly exhibits linear behaviors in two low-temperature regions. Both behaviors exactly correspond to two temperature-independent susceptibilities. These consistently reveal a novel re-entrance phenomenon of gapless QSL state at the lowest temperatures. The findings provide new insights into QSL ground and excited states and will inspire new theoretical and experimental studies., Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures
