The ability to tune magnetic orders, such as magnetic anisotropy and topological spin texture, is desired to achieve high-performance spintronic devices. A recent strategy has been to employ interfacial engineering techniques, such as the introduction of spin-correlated interfacial coupling, to tailor magnetic orders and achieve novel magnetic properties. We chose a unique polar-nonpolar LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice because Mn (3d)/Ir (5d) oxides exhibit rich magnetic behaviors and strong spin-orbit coupling through the entanglement of their 3d and 5d electrons. Through magnetization and magnetotransport measurements, we found that the magnetic order is interface-dominated as the superlattice period is decreased. We were able to then effectively modify the magnetization, tilt of the ferromagnetic easy axis, and symmetry transition of the anisotropic magnetoresistance of the LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice by introducing additional Mn (3d) and Ir (5d) interfaces. Further investigations using in-depth first-principles calculations and numerical simulations revealed that these magnetic behaviors could be understood by the 3d/5d electron correlation and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The results reported here demonstrate a new route to synchronously engineer magnetic properties through the atomic stacking of different electrons, which would contribute to future applications in high-capacity storage devices and advanced computing.

CONTEXT: In applying good energy conservation strategies to relieve cancer-related fatigue, it is critical to first identify cancer patients who are at a high risk for poor energy conservation. However, instruments have not been developed to evaluate energy conservation strategies in an oncology setting. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to validate an instrument that cancer patients may use to evaluate energy conservation strategies to overcome cancer-related fatigue. METHODS: The questionnaire development followed a four-phase process: 1) item generation and reduction, 2) construction, 3) pilot testing, and 4) field testing. Using relevant and priority criteria, as well as pilot testing, we developed a 25-item questionnaire. After field testing, five items were discarded. Finally, 20 items were included in the Energy Conservation Strategies Inventory (ECSI). Factor analysis, multitrait scaling analysis, and Cronbach's [alpha] were used to determine the construct validity and reliability. RESULTS: Factor analyses of data from 140 cancer patients resulted in the ECSI, which covers activities related to planning, overcoming distractions, labor saving, burden reducing, and comfort. All subscales (Cronbach's [alpha] range, 0.69-0.78) and total scores (Cronbach's [alpha]=0.87) were found to possess acceptable internal consistency. Purpose: To show the value of custom methods, namely Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)-based Large Language Models (LLMs) and Agentic Augmentation, over standard LLMs in delivering accurate information using an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury case., Methods: A set of 100 questions and answers based on the 2022 AAOS ACL guidelines were curated. Closed-source (open AI GPT4/GPT 3.5 and Anthropic's Claude3) and open-source models (LLama3 8b/70b and Mistral 8×7b) were asked questions in base form and again with AAOS guidelines embedded into a RAG system. The top-performing models were further augmented with artificial intelligence (AI) agents and reevaluated. Two fellowship-trained surgeons blindly evaluated the accuracy of the responses of each cohort. Recall-Oriented Understudy of Gisting Evaluation and Metric for Evaluation of Translation with Explicit Ordering scores were calculated to assess semantic similarity in the response., Results: All noncustom LLM models started below 60% accuracy. Applying RAG improved the accuracy of every model by an average 39.7%. The highest performing model with just RAG was Meta's open-source Llama3 70b (94%). The highest performing model with RAG and AI agents was Open AI's GPT4 (95%)., Conclusions: RAG improved accuracy by an average of 39.7%, with the highest accuracy rate of 94% in the Meta Llama3 70b. Incorporating AI agents into a previously RAG-augmented LLM improved ChatGPT4 accuracy rate to 95%. Thus, Agentic and RAG augmented LLMs can be accurate liaisons of information, supporting our hypothesis., Clinical Relevance: Despite literature surrounding the use of LLM in medicine, there has been considerable and appropriate skepticism given the variably accurate response rates. This study establishes the groundwork to identify whether custom modifications to LLMs using RAG and agentic augmentation can better deliver accurate information in orthopaedic care. This study, in vivo and in vitro, investigated the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in skeletal muscle adaptations to aerobic exercise. BDNF is a contraction-induced protein that may play a role in muscle adaptations to aerobic exercise. BDNF is involved in muscle repair, increased fat oxidation, and mitochondrial biogenesis, all of which are adaptations observed with aerobic training. The purpose of this study was two-pronged and investigated the skeletal muscle BDNF response to (1) acute and (2) chronic exercise in male C57BL/6J mice. It also examined if chronic BDNF treatment resulted in similar adaptations to chronic exercise. In aim 1, mice underwent a 2 hr. treadmill exercise bout. In aim 2, mice were assigned to one of four groups: (1) control (CON); (2) endurance training (ET; treadmill running 1 h/day, 5 days/wk); (3) BDNF (BDNF; 0.5 mg/kg·bw, 5 days/wk); (4) endurance training and BDNF (ET + BDNF) for 8 weeks. Results demonstrated that the soleus (SOL) had higher BDNF content compared with the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and that SOL BDNF increased with acute exercise. After chronic exercise and BDNF treatment, treadmill testing to exhaustion demonstrated a main effect of BDNF and ET on increasing exercise capacity. In vitro contractile assessment of the EDL revealed BDNF treatment resulted in similar increases in the max rate of relaxation as ET. EDL force-frequency analysis showed ET + BDNF produced higher force than CON and BDNF, indicating an additive effect. BDNF increased EDL mitochondrial proteins, COXIV, and CS. Treatment of acute medical conditions such as pain would benefit from rapid drug delivery and improved ease of administration of local anesthetics that currently have a slow onset of action by topical or oral administration and require expert administration by injection. To address this need, microneedle (MN) patches containing needlelike projections made from a polymer/drug matrix can be painlessly pressed into the skin for local or systemic drug delivery. To improve the speed and ease of drug delivery, we present a rapidly dissolving, highly water-soluble MN patch, which minimizes the wear time to 10 s to improve drug delivery in situations where rapid delivery with simplified administration is needed. MNs were made of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), which is soluble in both water (enabling dissolution in the skin) and polar organic solvents (facilitating coformulation with lidocaine (L)). The addition of a highly water-soluble salt, sodium bicarbonate (NaB), to PVP/L MNs allowed for 60% faster MN dissolution in porcine skin ex vivo. Further addition of citric acid to generate effervescence upon reaction with NaB did not further decrease the MN dissolution time in the pig skin and led to poor shelf-life stability due to premature effervescence during storage. The PVP/L/NaB MNs delivered 23.8 ± 3.5 μg lidocaine to the skin ex vivo, well above the expected dose for local analgesic effect. Our highly water-soluble PVP/L/NaB MN design enables shorter wear time for faster delivery compared to the oral or topical route and easier administration compared to injection currently used for the delivery of drugs needing a rapid onset of action.

Background: Residency choice is often influenced by experiences in medical school. It is unclear what potential factors contribute to medical schools producing higher numbers of physical medicine & rehabilitation (PM&R) residents., Objective: To identify the medical schools producing the most PM&R residents from 2017 to 2021 and potential influencing factors toward this production., Design: Descriptive, cross-sectional study., Setting: Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education accredited PM&R programs; allopathic/osteopathic/international medical schools., Interventions: REDCap Survey., Participants: Representatives from medical schools producing the most PM&R residents., Methods: The medical schools that produced the most PM&R residents from 2017 to 2021 were identified using publicly available information on the internet. A subgroup of the highest producing schools were surveyed to determine potential factors that contributed to production of PM&R residents., Main Outcome Measure: Medical schools with the highest number of matriculated PM&R residents from 2017 to 2021; potential factors influencing matriculating PM&R residents., Results: The medical school that produced the most PM&R residents from 2017 to 2021 was New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. Nine of the 11 medical schools producing the most PM&R residents were osteopathic. Of osteopathic graduates applying to residency, 2.87% matriculated into PM&R residencies compared to 1.21% of allopathic graduates (p < .001), though a greater number of allopathic graduates overall were represented. Among survey respondents 93.3% (14/15) attributed exposure to PM&R faculty/residents and exposure to PM&R through medical school curriculum as perceived factors contributing to production of PM&R residents., Conclusion: Osteopathic medical schools accounted for most of the schools producing the highest number of PM&R residents. A statistically significant higher percentage of osteopathic graduates were found to pursue PM&R as a career compared to allopathic counterparts although the total number of students entering PM&R was greater from allopathic schools. Lemierre's syndrome is marked by presence of septic thrombophlebitis in the internal jugular vein. This case report describes a 57-year-old woman who presented with a progressively swelling neck with onset 1 day prior to admission. She had a history of untreated dental infection. Physical examination revealed slightly increased blood pressure, at 140/80 mmHg, and a painful, erythematous, warm swelling in the mid area of the neck. Ultrasound of the neck revealed occlusive intraluminal thrombus in the right internal jugular vein, a computed tomography (CT) scan with contrast showed that there was a blockage in the right jugular vein. The mainstay treatment for Lemierre's syndrome is antibiotics, while administration of anticoagulants remains controversial. The patient was treated conservatively, with administration of antibiotics and anticoagulant. Backgrounds: The efficacy of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) for weight management and mitigating metabolic disorders among individuals with overweight and obesity remains a topic of ongoing discussion. Notably, there is a gap in the distinction between pure MCTs and medium-long-chain triglycerides (MLCTs)., Methods: This meta-analysis investigates the efficacy of MCTs on weight loss and glucolipid metabolism in these populations, explicitly evaluating the differential effects of pure MCTs and MLCTs. We performed a random-effects meta-analysis on relevant studies examining weight loss and glucolipid parameters, incorporating a subgroup analysis conducted based on intervention types, pure MCTs versus MLCTs., Results: Our findings revealed diets enriched with MCTs are more effective in achieving weight reduction (WMD: -1.53%; 95% CI: -2.44, -0.63; p < 0.01), particularly those containing pure MCTs (WMD: -1.62%; 95% CI: -2.78, -0.46; p < 0.01), compared to long-chain fatty acids (LCTs) enriched diets. However, our subgroup analysis indicates that an MLCTs-enriched diet did not significantly reduce weight loss. Selective scleral crosslinking has been proposed as a novel treatment to increase scleral stiffness to counteract biomechanical changes associated with glaucoma and high myopia. Scleral stiffening has been shown by transpupillary peripapillary scleral photocrosslinking in rats, where the photosensitizer, methylene blue (MB), was injected retrobulbarly and red light initiated crosslinking reactions with collagen. Here, we adapted a computational model previously developed to model this treatment in rat eyes to additionally model MB photocrosslinking in minipigs and humans. Increased tissue length and subsequent diffusion and light penetration limitations were found to be barriers to achieving the same extent of crosslinking as in rats. Per cent inspired O 2 , injected MB concentration and laser fluence were simultaneously varied to overcome these limitations and used to determine optimal combinations of treatment parameters in rats, minipigs and humans. Increasing these three treatment parameters simultaneously resulted in maximum crosslinking, except in rats, where the highest MB concentrations decreased crosslinking. Additionally, the kinetics and diffusion of photocrosslinking reaction intermediates and unproductive side products were modelled across space and time. The model provides a mechanistic understanding of MB photocrosslinking in scleral tissue and a basis for adapting and screening treatment parameters in larger animal models and, eventually, human eyes.

Toxocara canis is a parasitic zoonose that is distributed worldwide and is one of the two pathogens causing toxocariasis. After infection, it causes serious public health and safety problems, which pose significant veterinary and medical challenges. To better understand the regulatory effects of T. canis infection on the host immune cells, murine macrophages (RAW264.7) were incubated with recombinant T. canis C-type lectin 4 (rTc-CTL-4) protein in vitro. The quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blot were used to analyze the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing protein 1/2 (NOD1/2), receptor-interacting protein 2 (RIP2), nuclear factor kappa-light-chain enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) on mRNA level and protein expression level in macrophages. Our results indicated that 10 μg/mL rTc-CTL-4 protein could modulate the expression of NOD1, NOD2, and RIP2 at both the transcriptional and translational levels. The protein translation levels of NF-κB, P-p65, p38, and P-p38 in macrophages were also modulated by rTc-CTL-4 protein. Macrophages were co-incubated with rTc-CTL-4 protein after siRNA silencing of NOD1, NOD2, and RIP2. The expression levels of NF-κB, P-p65, p38, and P-p38 were significantly changed compared with the negative control groups (Neg. Ctrl.). Taken together, rTc-CTL-4 protein seemed to act on NOD1/2-RIP2-NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways in macrophages and might activate MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways by regulating NOD1, NOD2, and RIP2. A Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor (SLCT) is a rare ovarian tumor that often excessively secretes testosterone and its precursor, leading to virilization in females. We present a case of a female patient with persistent, severe hyperandrogenism. Our patient had a history of left oophorectomy due to an ectopic pregnancy and initially presented with amenorrhea at the age of 30. Biochemical evaluations suggested ovarian hyperandrogenism. Despite the absence of an ovarian mass, she underwent a right oophorectomy and remained hyperandrogenic postoperatively. When she established care with our endocrinology clinic at the age of 58, she had more virilizing features and total testosterone levels ranging from 10.1 to 12.0 nmol/L (292-346 ng/dL; normal reference range for women: 0.07-1.56 nmol/L; 2-45 ng/dL). While biochemical evaluations were consistent with tumorous ovarian hyperandrogenism, ultrasound and computed tomography again failed to identify the source. Finally, an 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography revealed a mass in the left adnexa, and she underwent removal of the mass. The final pathology confirmed SLCT. Three tree-killing bark beetles belonging to the genus Tomicus, Tomicus yunnanensis, Tomicus brevipilosus and Tomicus minor (Coleoptera; Curculionidae, Scolytinae), are serious wood-borers with larvae feeding on the phloem tissues of Pinus yunnanensis. The three Tomicus beetles, in some cases, coexist in a same habitat, providing a best system for exploring the conservation and divergence of reproductive genes. Here, we applied comparative transcriptomics and molecular biology approaches to characterize reproductive-related genes in three sympatric Tomicus species. Illumina sequencing of female and male reproductive systems and residual bodies generated a large number of clean reads, representing 185,920,232 sequences in T. yunnanensis, 169,153,404 in T. brevipilosus and 178,493,176 in T. minor that were assembled into 32,802, 56,912 and 33,670 unigenes, respectively. The majority of the genes had detectable expression in reproductive tissues (FPKM >1), particularly those genes in T. brevipilosus accounting for 76.61 % of the total genes. From the transcriptomes, totally 838 genes encoding 463 detoxification enzymes, 339 chemosensory membrane proteins and 36 ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) were identified, including 622 reproductive tissue-expressed genes. Of these, members of carboxylesterases (COEs), ionotropic receptors (IRs), sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs) and iGluRs were highly conserved in gene numbers and sequence identities across three Tomicus species. Further, expression profiling analyses revealed a number of genes expressed in reproductive tissues and the diverse expression characteristics in these beetles. Antennae and legs (primarily the tarsal segments) of insects are the foremost sensory organs that contact a diverse range of toxic chemicals including insecticides. Binding proteins expressed in the two tissues are potential molecular candidates serving as the binding and sequestering of insecticides, like chemosensory proteins (CSPs). Insect CSPs endowed with multiple roles have been suggested to participate in insecticide resistance, focusing mainly on moths, aphids and mosquitos. Yet, the molecular underpinnings underlying the interactions of cerambycid CSPs and insecticides remain unexplored. Here, we present binding properties of three antenna- and tarsus-enriched RhorCSPs (RhorCSP1, CSP2 and CSP3) in Rhaphuma horsfieldi to eight insecticide classes totaling 15 chemicals. From the transcriptome of this beetle, totally 16 CSP-coding genes were found, with seven full-length sequences. In phylogeny, these RhorCSPs were distributed dispersedly in different clades. Expression profiles revealed the abundant expression of RhorCSP1, CSP2 and CSP3 in antennae and tarsi, thus as representatives for studying the protein-insecticide interactions. Binding assays showed that the three RhorCSPs were tuned differentially to insecticides but exhibited the highest affinities with hexaflumuron, chlorpyrifos and rotenone (dissociation constants <13 μM). In particular, RhorCSP3 could interact strongly with 10 of tested insecticides, of which four residues (Tyr25, Phe42, Val65 and Phe68) contributed significantly to the binding of six, four, three and four ligands, respectively. Of these, the binding of four mutated RhorCSP3s to a botanical insecticide rotenone was significantly weakened compared to the wildtype protein. Furthermore, we also evidenced that RhorCSP3 was a broadly-tuned carrier protein in response to a wide variety of plant odorants outside insecticides. Altogether, our findings shed light on different binding mechanisms and odorant-tuning profiles of three RhorCSPs in R. horsfieldi and identify key residues of the RhorCSP3-insecticide interactions., (Copyright © 2023. A safety evaluation was performed of Symbiota®, which is made by a proprietary anaerobic fermentation process of soybean with multistrains of probiotics and a yeast. The battery of genotoxicity studies showed that Symbiota® has no genotoxic effects. Safety and tolerability were further assessed by acute or repeated dose 28- and 90-day rodent studies, and no alterations in clinical observations, ophthalmological examination, blood chemistry, urinalysis, or hematology were observed between the control group and the different dosing groups (1.5, 5, and 15 mL/kg/day). There were no adverse effects on specific tissues or organs in terms of weight and histopathology. Importantly, the Symbiota® treatment did not perturb hormones and other endocrine-related endpoints. Of note, the No-Observed-Adverse-Effect-Level was determined to be 15 mL/kg/day in rats. Moreover, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was recently conducted with healthy volunteers who consumed 8 mL/day of placebo or Symbiota® for 8 weeks. Only mild adverse events were reported in both groups, and the blood chemistry and blood cell profiles were also similar between the two groups. Non-adherence to medication is a major challenge in healthcare that results in worsened treatment outcomes for patients. Reducing the frequency of required administrations could improve adherence but is challenging for topical drug delivery due to the generally short residence time of topical formulations on the skin. In this study, we sought to determine the feasibility of developing a microbiome-based, long-acting, topical delivery platform using Bacillus subtilis for drug production and delivery on the skin, which was assessed using green fluorescent protein as a model heterologous protein for delivery. We developed a computational model of bacteria population dynamics on the skin and used its qualitative predictions to guide experimental design choices. Using an ex vivo pig skin model and a human skin tissue culture model, we saw persistence of delivered bacteria for multiple days and observed little evidence of cytotoxicity to human keratinocyte cells in vitro . Finally, using an in vivo mouse model, we found that the delivered bacteria persisted on the skin for at least 1 day during every-other-day application and did not appear to present safety concerns. Cancer immunotherapy has been regarded as a promising strategy for cancer therapy by blocking immune checkpoints and evoking immunity to fight cancer, but its efficacy seems to be heterogeneous among patients. Manipulating the gut microbiota is a potential strategy for enhancing the efficacy of immunotherapy. Here, we report that MS-20, also known as "Symbiota®", a postbiotic that comprises abundant microbial metabolites generated from a soybean-based medium fermented with multiple strains of probiotics and yeast, inhibited colon and lung cancer growth in combination with an anti-programmed cell death 1 (PD1) antibody in xenograft mouse models. Mechanistically, MS-20 remodeled the immunological tumor microenvironment by increasing effector CD8 + T cells and downregulating PD1 expression, which were mediated by the gut microbiota. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from mice receiving MS-20 treatment to recipient mice increased CD8 + T-cell infiltration into the tumor microenvironment and significantly improved antitumor activity when combined with anti-PD1 therapy. Notably, the abundance of Ruminococcus bromii , which increased following MS-20 treatment, was positively associated with a reduced tumor burden and CD8 + T-cell infiltration in vivo . Furthermore, an ex vivo study revealed that MS-20 could alter the composition of the microbiota in cancer patients, resulting in distinct metabolic pathways associated with favorable responses to immunotherapy. Overall, MS-20 could act as a promising adjuvant agent for enhancing the efficacy of immune checkpoint-mediated antitumor therapy.

Sleep disorders affect mental and physical health. Infertile women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment are prone to sleep disorders. Sleep condition, its influencing factors, and the association between sleep condition and ART treatment outcomes before treatment have not been explored within a population with a large sample size. Therefore, we investigated the sleep characteristics of 1002 Chinese infertile women before ovulation induction and investigated the influencing factors (negative and positive psychological factors, demographics, and fertility characteristics). We also examined whether sleep conditions before treatment predicted reproductive outcomes. We found that 24.1% of participants reported poor sleep quality. Women with primary infertility reported poorer sleep than women with secondary infertility. Negative psychological factors, including depression, anxiety, and perceived stress were associated with poor sleep, whereas positive affect was linked with good sleep. Adverse sleep characteristics, including poor subjective sleep quality, sleep disturbances, and poor sleep efficiency, decreased the quantity and quality of oocytes retrieved, fertilization rates, and clinical pregnancy rates. This study indicates that before ART treatment, a large number of females with infertility suffer from sleep problems, which are affected by psychological factors and infertility type, and unhealthy sleep characteristics may impair treatment outcomes. Correlated oxides and related heterostructures are intriguing for developing future multifunctional devices by exploiting their exotic properties, but their integration with other materials, especially on Si-based platforms, is challenging. Here, van der Waals heterostructures of La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO) , a correlated manganite perovskite, and MoS 2 are demonstrated on Si substrates with multiple functions. To overcome the problems due to the incompatible growth process, technologies involving freestanding LSMO membranes and van der Waals force-mediated transfer are used to fabricate the LSMO-MoS 2 heterostructures. The LSMO-MoS 2 heterostructures exhibit a gate-tunable rectifying behavior, based on which metal-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MESFETs) with on-off ratios of over 10 4 can be achieved. The LSMO-MoS 2 heterostructures can function as photodiodes displaying considerable open-circuit voltages and photocurrents. In addition, the colossal magnetoresistance of LSMO endows the LSMO-MoS 2 heterostructures with an electrically tunable magnetoresponse at room temperature. As the Si-based transistors scale down to atomic dimensions, the basic principle of current electronics, which heavily relies on the tunable charge degree of freedom, faces increasing challenges to meet the future requirements of speed, switching energy, heat dissipation, and packing density as well as functionalities. Heterogeneous integration, where dissimilar layers of materials and functionalities are unrestrictedly stacked at an atomic scale, is appealing for next-generation electronics, such as multifunctional, neuromorphic, spintronic, and ultralow-power devices, because it unlocks technologically useful interfaces of distinct functionalities. Recently, the combination of functional perovskite oxides and two-dimensional layered materials (2DLMs) led to unexpected functionalities and enhanced device performance. In this paper, we review the recent progress of the heterogeneous integration of perovskite oxides and 2DLMs from the perspectives of fabrication and interfacial properties, electronic applications, and challenges as well as outlooks. In particular, we focus on three types of attractive applications, namely field-effect transistors, memory, and neuromorphic electronics. The van der Waals integration approach is extendible to other oxides and 2DLMs, leading to almost unlimited combinations of oxides and 2DLMs and contributing to future high-performance electronic and spintronic devices.

Background: The diagnosis of postoperative or post-pancreatectomy acute pancreatitis (PPAP) is controversial. In 2021, the International Study Group of Pancreatic Surgery (ISGPS) published the first unifying definition and grading system for PPAP. This study sought to validate recent consensus criteria, using a cohort of patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) in a high-volume pancreaticobiliary specialty unit., Methods: All consecutive patients undergoing PD at a tertiary referral centre between January 2016 and December 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with serum amylase recorded within 48h from surgery were included for analysis. Postoperative data were extracted and evaluated against the ISGPS criteria, including the presence of postoperative hyperamylasaemia, radiologic features consistent with acute pancreatitis, and clinical deterioration., Results: A total of 82 patients were evaluated. The overall incidence of PPAP was 32% (26/82) in this cohort, of which 3/26 demonstrated postoperative hyperamylasaemia and 23/26 had clinically relevant PPAP (Grade B or C) when correlated radiologic and clinical criteria., Conclusions: This study is among the first to apply the recently published consensus criteria for PPAP diagnosis and grading to clinical data. Von Willebrand factor (VWF) is an adhesive ligand critical for maintaining hemostasis. However, it has also been increasingly recognized for its role in cancer development because it has been shown to mediate the adhesion of cancer cells to endothelial cells, promote the epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and enhance angiogenesis. We have previously shown that gastric cancer cells synthesize VWF, which mediates the interaction between the cancer and endothelial cells to promote cancer growth. Here, we report results from a clinical observational study that demonstrate the association of VWF in plasma and on the surface of extracellular vesicles (EVs) with the pathological characteristics of gastric cancer. We found that patients with gastric cancer had elevated and intrinsically hyperadhesive VWF in their peripheral blood samples. VWF was detected on the surface of EVs from cancer cells, platelets, and endothelial cells. Higher levels of these VWF-bound EVs were associated with cancer aggression and poor clinical outcomes for patients. These findings suggest that VWF + EVs from different cell types serve collectively as a new class of biomarkers for the outcome assessment of gastric cancer patients., (© 2023. Background: We evaluated the household secondary attack rate (SAR) of the omicron and delta severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants, according to the vaccination status of the index case and household contacts; further, in vaccinated index cases, we evaluated the effect of the antibody levels on household transmission., Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study of 92 index cases and 197 quarantined household contacts was performed. Tests for SARS-CoV-2 variant type and antibody level were conducted in index cases, and results of polymerase chain reaction tests (during the quarantine period) were collected from contacts. Association of antibody levels in vaccinated index cases and SAR was evaluated by multivariate regression analysis., Results: The SAR was higher in households exposed to omicron variant (42%) than in those exposed to delta variant (27%) ( P = 0.040). SAR was 35% and 23% for unvaccinated and vaccinated delta variant exposed contacts, respectively. SAR was 44% and 41% for unvaccinated and vaccinated omicron exposed contacts, respectively. Booster dose immunisation of contacts or vaccination of index cases reduced SAR of vaccinated omicron variant exposed contacts. In a model with adjustment, anti-receptor-binding domain antibody levels in vaccinated index cases were inversely correlated with household transmission of both delta and omicron variants. Purpose: Although postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) is demonstrably effective in local control of head and neck adenoid cystic carcinoma (HNACC), its application is controversial and the subset of patients who would benefit most from PORT is unknown. Herein, we analyzed the data of HNACC patients to clarify the role of PORT., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 187 patients with nonmetastatic HNACC who underwent surgical resection between 2005 and 2019. The study endpoints were locoregional failure-free survival (LRFFS), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS). Subgroup analysis and recursive partitioning analysis (RPA) were performed to identify patients most likely to benefit from PORT., Results: With a median follow-up of 84.7 months, the 5-year LRFFS, PFS, and OS were 70.0%, 52.6%, and 86.4%, respectively. Survival was significantly shorter in patients who experienced local failure than in those who did not (5-year OS: 88.1% vs. 80.5%, P = 0.001). The local failure rate was significantly lower in patients who underwent PORT (16.9% vs. 31.0%, P = 0.021), despite the high frequency of adverse factors. Especially, significant decreases in local failure and similar OS rates could be obtained after PORT among patients with positive margins, T2-4 stage disease, and minor salivary gland tumors. The RPA model for PFS categorized patients into four groups according to three prognostic factors (T-stage, location, and sex). The RPA model for LRFFS and OS suggested three groups based on two factors (T-stage, margin for LRFFS; T-stage, grade 3 for OS)., Conclusion: PORT could prevent dismal survival, while significantly reducing local failures in high-risk HNACC patients., (© 2022. Phosphate rock containing rare-earth elements (REEs) is considered one of the most promising potential secondary sources of REEs, as evidenced by large tonnages of phosphate rock mined annually. The bioleaching of REEs from phosphate rock using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was done for the first time in this study, and it was found to be greater than abiotic leaching and was more environmentally friendly. The result showed that the total leaching rate of REEs in phosphate rock was 28·46% under the condition of 1% pulp concentration and pH = 2, and the leaching rates of four key rare earths, Y, La, Ce and Nd, were 35·7, 37·03, 27·92 and 32·53% respectively. The bioleaching process was found to be accomplished by bacterial contact and Fe 2+ oxidation. The blank control group which contained Fe 2+ was able to leach some of the rare earths, indicating that the oxidation of Fe 2+ may affect the leaching of rare earths. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the minerals were significantly altered and the intensity of the diffraction peaks of dolomite and apatite decreased significantly after microbial action compared to the blank control, and it was observed that bacteria adhere to the mineral surface and the minerals become smooth and angular after bioleaching by scanning electron microscope, indicating that bacteria have a further effect on the rock based on Fe 2+ oxidation. Finally, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectra analysis showed that extracellular polymeric substances participate in the bioleaching process., (© 2022 The Society for Applied Microbiology.)

The endothelium is the critical barrier that controls transendothelial communications. Blood vessels in cancer tissue are poorly developed and highly permeable. However, it is poorly understood how circulating cancer cells released through these "leaky" vessels break the intact vasculature of remote organs to metastasize. We investigated the roles of cancer cell-derived extracellular vesicles (CEVs) in regulating cancer metastasis by analyzing samples from gastric cancer patients, performing in vitro experiments, and studying mouse models. We made several novel observations. First, the rate of metastasis was closely associated with plasma levels of CEVs in patients with gastric cancer. Second, cultured endothelial cells endocytosed CEVs, resulting in cytoskeletal rearrangement, low expression of the junction proteins cadherin and CD31, and forming large intercellular gaps to allow the transendothelial migration of cancer cells. The dynamin inhibitor Dynasore prevented these CEV-induced changes of endothelial cells by blocking CEVs endocytosis. Third, CEVs disrupted the endothelial barrier of cancer-bearing mice to promote cancer metastasis. Finally, lactadherin promoted the clearance of circulating CEVs to reduce metastasis. Ingestible devices have the potential to clear away barriers to oral delivery of biologics to improve drug bioavailability.

The wood-boring beetles, including the majority of Cerambycidae, have developed the ability to metabolize a variety of toxic compounds derived from host plants and the surrounding environment. However, detoxification mechanisms underlying the evolutionary adaptation of a cerambycid beetle Pharsalia antennata to hosts and habitats are largely unexplored. Here, we characterized three key gene families in relation to detoxification (cytochrome P450 monooxygenases: P450s, carboxylesterases: COEs and glutathione-S-transferases: GSTs), by combinations of transcriptomics, gene identification, phylogenetics and expression profiles. Illumina sequencing generated 668,701,566 filtered reads in 12 tissues of P. antennata , summing to 100.28 gigabases data. From the transcriptome, 215 genes encoding 106 P450s, 77 COEs and 32 GSTs were identified, of which 107 relatives were differentially expressed genes. Of the identified 215 genes, a number of relatives showed the orthology to those in Anoplophora glabripennis , revealing 1:1 relationships in 94 phylogenetic clades. In the trees, P. antennata detoxification genes mainly clustered into one or two subfamilies, including 64 P450s in the CYP3 clan, 33 COEs in clade A, and 20 GSTs in Delta and Epsilon subclasses. Combining transcriptomic data and PCR approaches, the numbers of detoxification genes expressed in abdomens, antennae and legs were 188, 148 and 141, respectively. Notably, some genes exhibited significantly sex-biased levels in antennae or legs of both sexes. In this study, we annotated 49 odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) in Papilio xuthus , with four novel genes and seven improved sequences. Expression profiles identified numerous OBPs in antennae or reproductive tissues. Using two antenna-enriched general OBPs (PxutGOBP1 and PxutGOBP2) as targets, we screened three key compounds by a reverse chemical ecology strategy. Of these, an oviposition stimulant vicenin-2 could strongly interact with PxutGOBP1, representing a dissociation constant ( K i ) value of 10.34 ± 0.07 μM. Molecular simulations and site-directed mutagenesis revealed the importance of His66, Thr73, and Phe118 between PxutGOBP1 and vicenin-2 interactions. Two other compounds, an ordinary floral scent β-ionone and a widely used insecticide chlorpyrifos, exhibited high affinities to PxutGOBPs ( K i < 13 μM). Furthermore, two mutations His66Ala and Thr73Ala of PxutGOBP1 significantly reduced the binding to chlorpyrifos. Our study provides insights into the putative roles of PxutGOBPs in odorant perception and identifies key binding sites of PxutGOBP1 to vicenin-2 and chlorpyrifos.

Scleral photocrosslinking is increasingly investigated for treatment of myopia and glaucoma. In this study a computational model was developed to predict crosslinking efficiency of visible/near infrared photosensitizers in the sclera. Photocrosslinking was validated against riboflavin corneal crosslinking experimental studies and subsequently modeled for the sensitizer, methylene blue, administered by retrobulbar injection to the posterior sclera and irradiated with a transpupillary light beam. Optimal ranges were determined for treatment parameters including light intensity, methylene blue concentration, injection volume, and inspired oxygen concentration. Additionally, sensitivity of crosslinking to various parameters was quantified. Background: Omicron variant viruses spread rapidly, even in individuals with high vaccination rates. This study aimed to determine the utility of the antibody against spike protein level as a predictor of the disease course of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in vaccinated patients., Methods: Between December 11, 2021, and February 10, 2022, we performed a prospective observational cohort study in South Korea, which included patients infected with Delta and Omicron variants. A multivariable logistic regression analysis to determine the association between antibody levels and outcomes was conducted. The relationship between antibody levels and cycle threshold (Ct) values was confirmed using a generalized linear model., Results: From 106 vaccinated patients (39 Delta and 67 Omicron), the geometric mean titers of antibodies in patients with fever (≥37.5°C), hypoxia (≤94% of SpO 2 ), pneumonia, C-reactive protein (CRP) elevation (>8 mg/L), or lymphopenia (<1100 cells/μL) were 1201.5 U/mL, 98.8 U/mL, 774.1 U/mL, 1335.1 U/mL, and 1032.2 U/mL, respectively. Increased antibody levels were associated with a decrease in the occurrence of fever (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.23; 95% CI, 0.12-0.51), hypoxia (aOR, 0.23; 95% CI, 0.08-0.7), CRP elevation (aOR, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.29-0.0.94), and lymphopenia (aOR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.33-0.98). Ct values showed a positive correlation between antibody levels ( P  = .02)., Conclusions: Antibody levels are predictive of the clinical course of COVID-19 in vaccinated patients with Delta and Omicron variant infections. The ε4 allele of the apolipoprotein E gene (APOE4) is a strong genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and several other neurodegenerative conditions, including Lewy body dementia (LBD). The three APOE alleles encode protein isoforms that differ from one another only at amino acid positions 112 and 158: apoE2 (C112, C158), apoE3 (C112, R158), and apoE4 (R112, R158). Despite progress, it remains unclear how these small amino acid differences in apoE sequence among the three isoforms lead to profound effects on aging and disease-related pathways. Here, we propose a novel "ApoE Cascade Hypothesis" in AD and age-related cognitive decline, which states that the biochemical and biophysical properties of apoE impact a cascade of events at the cellular and systems levels, ultimately impacting aging-related pathogenic conditions including AD. MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT) is the first intrinsic magnetic topological insulator with the interaction of spin-momentum locked surface electrons and intrinsic magnetism, and it exhibits novel magnetic and topological phenomena. Recent studies suggested that the interaction of electrons and magnetism can be affected by the Mn-doped Bi 2 Te 3 phase at the surface due to inevitable structural defects. Here, we report an observation of nonreciprocal transport, that is, current-direction-dependent resistance, in a bilayer composed of antiferromagnetic MBT and nonmagnetic Pt. The emergence of the nonreciprocal response below the Néel temperature confirms a correlation between nonreciprocity and intrinsic magnetism in the surface state of MBT. The angular dependence of the nonreciprocal transport indicates that nonreciprocal response originates from the asymmetry scattering of electrons at the surface of MBT mediated by magnon. Our work provides an insight into nonreciprocity arising from the correlation between magnetism and Dirac surface electrons in intrinsic magnetic topological insulators.

To preliminarily explore the antibiotic concentration distribution characteristics of Guizhou Chishui River basin surface water and potential ecological risks, we used solid phase extraction liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (SPE-HPLC- MS) to analyze 21 types of antibiotics in surface water samples. Twelve types of antibiotics were detected in the Chishui River basin surface water, and the total concentrations of ofloxacin, sulfadiazine, and trimethoprim ranged from ND-1166.97 ng·L -1 , with a detection rate of 100%. On average, the highest concentration of the three types of antibiotics detected were ofloxacin (221.59 ng·L -1 ), tetracycline (13.18 ng·L -1 ), and sulfadiazine (4.11 ng·L -1 ), and the antibiotic concentration distribution showed the following order of characteristics:downstream (359.41 ng·L -1 ) > midstream(224.59 ng·L -1 ) > upstream (179.72 ng·L -1 ). The ecological environment risk assessment results indicated the largest risk for downstream W21, tetracycline, doxycycline, enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, and erythromycin. The risk quotient revealed that lincomycin had a medium-risk level, and ofloxacin had a high-risk level. This shows that antibiotics in the waters of the Chishui River basin may cause certain ecological risks.

Purpose: Preclinical data indicate that response to radiotherapy (RT) depends on DNA damage repair. In this study, we investigated the role of mutations in genes related to DNA damage repair in treatment outcome after RT., Materials and Methods: Patients with solid tumor who participated in next generation sequencing panel screening using biopsied tumor tissue between October 2013 and February 2019 were reviewed and 97 patients that received RT were included in this study. Best response to RT and the cumulative local recurrence rate (LRR) were compared according to absence or presence of missense, nonsense, and frameshift mutations in ATM and/or BRCA1/2., Results: Of the 97 patients, five patients harbored mutation only in ATM, 22 in only BRCA1/2, and six in both ATM and BRCA1/2 (ATMmtBRCAmt). Propensity score matching was performed to select the control group without mutations (ATMwtBRCAwt, n=33). In total, 90 RT-treated target lesions were evaluated in 66 patients. Highest objective response rate of 80% was observed in ATMmtBRCAmt lesions (p=0.007), which was mostly durable. Furthermore, the cumulative 1-year LRR was the lowest in ATMmtBRCAmt lesions and the highest in ATMwtBRCAwt lesions (0% vs. 47.9%, p=0.008). RT-associated toxicities were observed in 10 treatments with no significant difference among the subgroups (p=0.680)., Conclusion: Tumors with ATM and BRCA1/2 mutations exhibited superior tumor response and local control after RT compared to tumors without these mutations. The results are hypothesis generating and suggest the need for integrating the tumor mutation profile of DNA repair genes during treatment planning.

In most moth species, sex pheromones responsible for mating and communication of both sexes are primarily produced by the pheromone glands (PGs) of female moths. Although the PG transcriptomes and pheromone production related genes from 24 moth species have been characterized, studies on the related information remain unknown in the Zygaenidae family. Here, we sequenced the PG transcriptome of a zygaenid moth, Achelura yunnanensis . Such the sequencing resulted in the yields of 47,632,610 clean reads that were assembled into 54,297 unigenes, coupled with RNA sequencing data from 12 other tissues. Based on the transcriptome, a total of 191 genes encoding pheromone biosynthesis and degradation enzymes were identified, 161 of which were predicted to have full-length sequences. A comparative analysis among 24 moth species of nine families indicated that the numbers of the genes were variable, ranging from 14 in two Grapholita species to 191 in A. yunnanensis . Phylogenetic analysis in parallel with the expression data highlighted some key genes, including three △9 and four △11 desaturases, four fatty acyl-CoA reductases (FARs) clustering in the pgFAR clade, and three significantly antennae-enriched aldehyde oxidases. An extensive tissue- and sex- expression profile revealed a broad distribution of the genes, in which 128 relatives were detected in the PGs and 127 in the antennae. During the past decade, antennal transcriptome sequencing has been applied to at least 50 species from 16 families of the Lepidoptera order of insects, emphasizing the identification and characterization of chemosensory-related genes. However, little is known about the chemosensory genes in the Zygaenidae family of Lepidoptera. Herein, we report the transmembrane protein gene repertoires involved in chemoreception from Achelura yunnanensis (Lepidoptera: Zygaenidae) through transcriptome sequencing, bioinformatics, phylogenetics and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) approaches. Transcriptome analysis led to the generation of 555.47 million clean reads and accumulation of 83.30 gigabases of data. From this transcriptome, 132 transcripts encoding 69 odorant receptors (ORs), 33 gustatory receptors (GRs), 26 ionotropic receptors (IRs), and four sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs) were identified, 69 of which were full-length sequences. Notably, the number of SNMPs in A. yunnanensis was the largest set in Lepidoptera to date. Phylogenetic analysis combined with sequence homology highlighted several conserved groups of chemoreceptors, including pheromone receptors (a so-called pheromone receptor (PR) clade: AyunOR50 and novel PR members: AyunOR39 and OR40), a phenylacetaldehyde-sensing OR (AyunOR28), carbon dioxide receptors (AyunGR1-3), and antennal IRs (13 A-IRs). In addition, a Zygaenidae-specific OR expansion was observed, including 15 A. yunnanensis members. Expression profiles revealed 99 detectable chemosensory genes in the antennae and 20 in the reproductive tissues, some of which displayed a sex-biased expression. This study identifies potential olfactory molecular candidates for sensing sex pheromones, phenylacetaldehyde or other odorants, and provides preliminary evidence for the putative reproductive function of chemosensory membrane protein genes in A. yunnanensis., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Membrane glycoprotein is the most abundant protein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), but its role in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has not been fully characterized. Mice intranasally inoculated with membrane glycoprotein substantially increased the interleukin (IL)-6, a hallmark of the cytokine storm, in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), compared to mice inoculated with green fluorescent protein (GFP). The high level of IL-6 induced by membrane glycoprotein was significantly diminished in phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4B) knockout mice, demonstrating the essential role of PDE4B in IL-6 signaling. Mycelium fermentation of Lactobacillus rhamnosus (L. rhamnosus) EH8 strain yielded butyric acid, which can down-regulate the PDE4B expression and IL-6 secretion in macrophages. Feeding mice with mycelia increased the relative abundance of commensal L. rhamnosus. Two-week supplementation of mice with L. rhamnosus plus mycelia considerably decreased membrane glycoprotein-induced PDE4B expression and IL-6 secretion. The probiotic activity of L. rhamnosus plus mycelia against membrane glycoprotein was abolished in mice treated with GLPG-0974, an antagonist of free fatty acid receptor 2 (Ffar2). Activation of Ffar2 in the gut-lung axis for down-regulation of the PDE4B-IL-6 signalling may provide targets for development of modalities including probiotics for treatment of the cytokine storm in COVID-19., (Copyright © 2021. Radiofrequency ablation of the sacral lateral branches targets the innervation of the posterior sacroiliac ligaments and posterior portion of the sacroiliac joint. These structures are also collectively referred to as the posterior sacroiliac joint complex. This review will discuss current diagnostic block paradigms and selection criteria for sacral lateral branch radiofrequency ablation, varying techniques and technologies utilized for sacral lateral branch radiofrequency ablation, and updates on the clinical outcome literature. The current evidence suggests that sacral lateral branch radiofrequency ablation can provide relief for posterior sacroiliac joint complex pain, but the literature is limited by variability in selection criteria, the specific nerves targeted by radiofrequency ablation, and the types of radiofrequency ablation technology and techniques utilized in clinical outcome studies., (© The Author(s) 2021. The Taiwan Tilapia is an important aquaculture product in Taiwan. The aquatic by-products generated during Tilapia processing, such as fish bones and skin, are rich in minerals and protein. We aimed to explore the effect of a dietary supplement, comprising a mixture of fermented Tilapia by-products and Monostroma nitidum oligosaccharides as the raw materials, combined with physical training on exercise performance and fatigue. We used a mouse model that displays a phenotype of accelerated aging. Male senescence-accelerated mouse prone-8 (SAMP8) mice were divided into two control groups-with or without physical training-and supplemented with different doses (0.5 times: 412 mg/kg body weight (BW)/day; 1 time: 824 mg/kg BW/day; 2 times: 1648 mg/kg BW/day) of fermented Tilapia by-products and Monostroma nitidum oligosaccharide-containing mixture and combined with exercise training groups. Exercise performance was determined by testing forelimb grip strength and with a weight-bearing exhaustive swimming test. Animals were sacrificed to collect physical fatigue-related biomarkers. Mice dosed at 824 or 1648 mg/kg BW/day showed improvement in their exercise performance ( p < 0.05). In terms of biochemical fatigue indicators, supplementation of 824 or 1648 mg/kg BW/day doses of test substances could effectively reduce blood urea nitrogen concentration and lactate concentration and increase the lactate ratio ( p < 0.05) and liver glycogen content post-exercise ( p < 0.05). Based on the above results, the combination of physical training and consumption of a dietary supplementation mixture of fermented Tilapia by-products and Monostroma nitidum oligosaccharides could improve the exercise performance of mice and help achieve an anti-fatigue effect.

Abstract: Previous surveys have demonstrated an increasing trend among graduating physiatry residents who desired to pursue a subspecialty fellowship. There has been sparse information on whether residents start their training with a subspecialty interest in mind and what factors influenced them to choose a fellowship. This article describes a prospective survey in the 2019-2020 academic year in which 175 responses were collected representing 65 (78.3%) of the 83 physical medicine and rehabilitation programs with graduating residents. Nearly 3 in 4 (73.7%, 129/175) reported matching into a fellowship, and among those, 79.8% (103/129) had matched into a pain, spine, or sports medicine fellowship. At the start of residency, 62.3% (109/175) were planning to pursue a fellowship, with 54.9% (96/175) planning to focus on either pain, sports, or spine medicine. Most respondents (72.2%) did not change their initial subspecialty focus during their residency training. Forty-six percent agreed that their anticipated subspecialty influenced their choice of residency program. The results of this survey demonstrate that most graduating residents are matriculating into fellowship training with pain, spine, and/or sports medicine being among the top choices. A ruthenium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation method for the synthesis of functionalized β-aryl cyclohexanols is described. With chiral spiro ruthenium catalyst ( R a , S , S )- 5c , a series of racemic α-aryl cyclohexanones bearing a β-monoethylene ketal group were hydrogenated to the corresponding functionalized β-aryl cyclohexanols in high yields with enantioselectivity of up to 99% ee via a dynamic kinetic resolution. This protocol can be conducted on a decagram scale and provide potential approaches for the synthesis of optically active and densely functionalized aryl cyclohexanols.

Electrogenic bacteria can mediate electron transfer to conserve energy and promote growth. To examine bacterial electrogenicity, an L. mesenteroides EH-1 strain was cultured in rich media in the presence and absence of 2% glucose. After 12 h incubation, glucose triggered fermentation of L. mesenteroides EH-1 to produce >10 mmol/l acetate and elicit electricity measured by voltage changes. The electricity production was mediated by glucose fermentation since pre-treatment of L. mesenteroides EH-1 with furfural, a fermentation inhibitor, completely diminished the voltage increases. The deficiency of furfural pre-treated L. mesenteroides EH-1 in electricity production can be restored by the external addition of acetate into the bacterial culture, suggesting the function of acetate as an electron donor. Oral administration of HFD-fed mice with L. mesenteroides EH-1 in the presence or absence of glucose significantly attenuated the high level of pro-inflammatory IL-6 cytokine in blood. Bacterial electricity can be elicited by fermentation. Background: Foam sclerotherapy is an effective treatment strategy for vascular malformations, and its sclerosing power depends on foam stability. Twenty quick passages have been widely used as an indicator of the most stable state of sclerosants, but the universality of their effectiveness has not been proven yet., Objective: We aimed to identify simple and objective indicators of the most stable state of commonly used sclerosants and provide practitioners with suggestions to judge when foam producing is completed in sclerotherapy., Materials and Methods: The universality of the effectiveness of 20 passages was tested by producing bleomycin foam with different passages. Further study was performed by testing modified bleomycin, polidocanol, and sodium tetradecylsulfate foam., Results: The bleomycin foam became denser as passages were added, and the sound of each passage became almost silent after 40 passages. The almost silent sound can be an indicator of foam stability for most sclerosants. It has a different application range compared with 20 quick passages., Conclusion: We suggest that practitioners choose a different indicator depending on the foam used.
