Abstract To investigate the presence of modular loss of coupling and abnormal alterations in functional and structural networks in the brain networks of patients with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). We collected resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data and diffusion tensor imaging data from 82 healthy controls (HCs) and 71 PHN patients, generated structural connectivity (SC) and functional connectivity (FC) networks, and assessed the corresponding clinical information assessment. Based on AAL(90) mapping, the brain network was divided into 9 modules, and the structural–functional connectivity (SC–FC) coupling was compared at the whole-brain level and within the modules, as well as alterations in the topological properties of the brain network in the patient group. Finally, correlation analyses were performed using the following clinical scales: Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD). Compared with HCs, patients with PHN had reduced global efficiency (Eg) and local efficiency (Eloc) of structural and functional networks. The FC in the PHN group presented abnormal node clustering coefficients (NCp), local node efficiencies (NLe), and node efficiencies (Ne), and the SC presented abnormal node degrees (Dc), NCp, NLe, characteristic path lengths (NLp), and Ne. In addition, SC–FC coupling was reduced in the patient default network (DMN), salient network (SN), and visual network (VIS). Moreover, the degree of impairment of graph theory indicators was significantly positively correlated with scales such as VAS scores, and the coupling of modules was significantly negatively correlated with the early course of the patient’s disease. Large-scale impaired topological properties of the FC and SC networks were observed in patients with PHN, and SC–FC decoupling was detected in these modules of the DMN, SN, and VIS. These aberrant alterations may have led to over-transmission of pain information or central sensitization of pain.

Abstract Background The association between marital status and gallbladder cancer (GBC) remains uncertain. This study aimed to verify the relationship between marital status and GBC and construct a prognostic nomogram to predict the impact of marital status on GBC patients. Method GBC patients were divided into married and unmarried groups using data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. We employed competing risk analyses, propensity score matching (PSM), and Kaplan-Meier survival analyses. The relationship between marital status and GBC was then verified, and the predicted nomogram was constructed. Results A total of 3913 GBC patients were obtained from the SEER database, and an additional 76 GBC patients from Hangzhou Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital were selected as the external validation group. The competing risk analysis revealed a significant disparity in the 5-year cumulative incidence of cancer-specific death (CSD) between the two cohorts (59.1% vs. 65.2%, p = 0.003). Furthermore, the multivariate competing hazards regression analysis identified a significant association (HR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.04–1.31; p = 0.007) between marital status and CSD. To assess the 1-, 3-, and 5-year risks of CSD, a comprehensive competing event nomogram was constructed using factors derived from the multivariate analysis. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) values for the 1-, 3-, and 5-year training cohorts were 0.806, 0.785, and 0.776, respectively. In the internal validation cohort, these values were 0.798, 0.790, and 0.790, while the external validation cohort exhibited AUC values of 0.748, 0.835, and 0.883 for the corresponding time intervals. Furthermore, calibration curves demonstrated a commendable level of concordance between the observed and predicted probabilities of CSD. Conclusion Marriage was a protective factor for GBC patients after taking competing risk into consideration. The proposed nomogram demonstrated exceptional predictive power.

Adsorbing and recycling alcohols and acids from industrial wastewater is of great significance in wastewater treatment; establishing the possible quantitative relationship of alcohol–acid adsorption capacity with the struct0ures of adsorbents and exploring the key factors determining their adsorption performance is very important and challenging in environment science. To solve this difficult problem, the adsorption of C1-5 alcohols, C2-4 acids, and Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) wastewater on zeolites with similar hydrophobicity and pore structures (β and MFI), similar hydrophilicity but different pore structures (Y and MOR), and similar pore structures but significant differences in hydrophobicity (MOR vs. β and MFI) was systematically investigated. It was found that: (1) For materials with similar pore structures, increased hydrophobicity correlates with enhanced adsorption capacities for alcohols and acids. (2) For materials with similar hydrophobicity, a higher content of ultramicropores leads to increased adsorption of alcohols and acids. (3) Between pore structure and hydrophobicity, it is hydrophobicity that ultimately plays a decisive role in adsorption capacities. The adsorption behavior of zeolites in FTS wastewater exhibits a consistent trend, with β-zeolite demonstrating the highest hydrophobicity (contact angle of 105°) and the greatest adsorption capacity in FTS wastewater, achieving 103 mg/g. Following five adsorption–desorption cycles, the zeolites retained their adsorption capacity without significant degradation, indicating their excellent stability and reusability. The findings identify the critical factors determining adsorption performance and provide a solid foundation for the design and development of high-performance adsorbents for alcohol–acid adsorption.

Conventional oxidation processes for alkyl aromatics to ketones employ oxidants that tend to generate harmful byproducts and cause severe equipment corrosion, ultimately creating critical environmental problems. Thus, in this study, a practical, efficient, and green method was developed for the synthesis of aromatic ketones by applying a bis(2-butoxyethyl) ether/O2 system under external catalyst-, additive-, and base-free conditions. This O2-mediated oxidation system can tolerate various functional groups and is suitable for large-scale synthesis. Diverse target ketones were prepared under clean conditions in moderate-to-high yields. The late-stage functionalization of drug derivatives with the corresponding ketones and one-pot sequential chemical conversions to ketone downstream products further broaden the application prospects of this approach.

Abstract For around half of the pediatric B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) patients, the molecular mechanism of relapse remains unclear. To fill this gap in knowledge, here we characterize the chromatin accessibility landscape in pediatric relapsed B-ALL. We observe rewired accessible chromatin regions (ACRs) associated with transcription dysregulation in leukemia cells as compared with normal B-cell progenitors. We show that over a quarter of the ACRs in B-ALL are in quiescent regions with high heterogeneity among B-ALLs. We identify subtype-specific and allele-imbalanced chromatin accessibility by integrating multi-omics data. By characterizing the differential ACRs between diagnosis and relapse in B-ALL, we identify alterations in chromatin accessibility during drug treatment. Further analysis of ACRs associated with relapse free survival leads to the identification of a subgroup of B-ALL which show early relapse. These data provide an advanced and integrative portrait of the importance of chromatin accessibility alterations in tumorigenesis and drug responses.

Abstract Background Gastric neuroendocrine carcinoma (GNEC) is a rare histology of gastric cancer. The retrospective study was designed to construct and validate a nomogram for predicting the cancer-specific survival (CSS) of postoperative GNEC patients. Methods Data for 28 patients from the Hangzhou TCM Hospital were identified as the external validation cohort. A total of 1493 patients were included in the SEER database and randomly assigned to the training group (1045 patients) and internal validation group (448 patients). The nomogram was constructed using the findings of univariate and multivariate Cox regression studies. The model was evaluated by consistency index (C-index), calibration plots, and clinical net benefit. Finally, the effect between the nomogram and AJCC staging system was compared by net reclassification index (NRI) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI). Results Age, gender, grade, T stage, N stage, metastasis, primary site, tumor size, RNE, and chemotherapy were incorporated in the nomogram. The C-indexes were 0.792 and 0.782 in the training and internal verification sets. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year CSS predicted by the nomogram and actual measurements had good agreement in calibration plots. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year NRI were 0.21, 0.29, and 0.37, respectively. Background: Shingles can cause long-term pain and negative emotions, along with changes in brain function. In this study, Granger Causality Analysis (GCA) was used to compare herpes zoster (HZ) and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) differences in effective connections within the “pain matrix” between patients and healthy controls to further understand patterns of interaction between brain regions and explore the relationship between changes in effective connections and clinical features. Methods: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans were performed on 55 HZ; 55 PHN; and 50 age-, sex- matched healthy controls (HCs). The brain regions associated with the pain matrix are used as the seeds of effective connectivity. GCA was used to analyze effective connections in brain regions that differed significantly between groups. Then the correlation between GCA values and clinical indicators was studied. Results: Compared with HC, GCA values between the thalamus and the amygdala, between the thalamus and the precentral gyrus, from the thalamus to the postcentral gyrus, and from the parahippocampal gyrus to the amygdala, anterior cingulate gyrus were significantly reduced in HZ patients. Compared with HC, GCA values between the insular and the postcentral gyrus, from the insular to the inferior parietal lobe, and from the postcentral gyrus to the amygdala were significantly reduced in PHN patients. Compared with HZ, GCA values between the inferior parietal lobe and the parahippocampal gyrus, between the inferior parietal lobe and the anterior cingulate gyrus, and from the anterior cingulate gyrus to the amygdala were significantly increased in PHN patients. The visual analogue scale (VAS) score of PHN patients was positively correlated with the GCA value from the central posterior lobe to the insula. Conclusions: PHN and HZ patients showed a broad reduction in effective connections, mainly reflected in abnormal pain pathway regulation, pain perception, negative emotion and memory production, providing new perspectives to understand the neuroimaging mechanisms of shingles.

This study aimed to develop and test a University Students’ Perceptions of Physical Education (PE) Scale. The study was conducted in three phases in a southwestern city in China from December 2021 to October 2022. In Phase 1, an item pool was constructed based on a literature review and semi-structured interviews. In Phase 2, expert evaluations and university student interviews were conducted to evaluate the content validity of the questionnaire. In Phase 3, a cross-sectional study was administered to university students. Composite reliability (CR) and average variance extracted (AVE) for internal consistency and test-retest reliability analyses were calculated for the stability reliability analysis. The validity evaluations included content, construct, and discriminant validity and an invariance test. The developed scale comprises 20 items covering six domains: habituated behavior in physical activity, self-efficacy in PE, attitude and experience in PE, skills and knowledge, classroom climate, and facilities, equipment and norms. Each domain’s CR and AVE values exceeded 0.7 and 0.5, respectively. The statistical indices of the final model were chi-square (χ2) = 458.227, degrees of freedom ( df ) = 155, Comparative Fit Index = 0.957, Tucker–Lewis Index = 0.947, standardized root mean square residual = 0.061, and root mean square error of approximation = 0.066, supporting the reliability and viability of the scale. A scientific process was adopted in constructing the University Students’ Perceptions of PE Scale. High validity and reliability scores indicate the suitability of using this scale for further research.

Abstract Background The role of adjuvant chemotherapy in gastric neuroendocrine neoplasms (GNEC) has not been well clarified yet. The study was designed to investigate the potential effect of adjuvant chemotherapy in stage I–II GNEC patients and construct a predictive nomogram. Method Stage I–II GNEC patients were included in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and divided into chemotherapy and no-chemotherapy groups. We used Kaplan–Meier survival analyses, propensity score matching (PSM), and competing risk analyses. The predictive nomogram was then built and validated. Results Four hundred four patients with stage I–II GNEC were enrolled from the SEER database while 28 patients from Hangzhou TCM Hospital were identified as the external validation cohort. After PSM, similar 5-year cancer-specific survival was observed in two groups. The outcomes of competing risk analysis indicated a similar 5-year cumulative incidence of cancer-specific death (CSD) between the two cohorts (35.4% vs. 31.4%, p = 0.731). And there was no significant relation between chemotherapy and CSD in the multivariate competing risks regression analysis (HR, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.48–1.31; p = 0.36). Furthermore, based on the variables from the multivariate analysis, a competing event nomogram was created to assess the 1-, 3-, and 5-year risks of CSD. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) values were 0.770, 0.759, and 0.671 in the training cohort, 0.809, 0.782, and 0.735 in the internal validation cohort, 0.786, 0.856, and 0.770 in the external validation cohort. Furthermore, calibration curves revealed that the expected and actual probabilities of CSD were relatively consistent. Conclusion Stage I–II GNEC patients could not benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery. De-escalation of chemotherapy should be considered for stage I–II GNEC patients. The proposed nomogram exhibited excellent prediction ability.

Abstract Background Alimentary tract malignancies (ATM) caused nearly one-third of all tumor-related death. Cuproptosis is a newly identified cell death pattern. The role of cuproptosis-associated lncRNAs in ATM is unknown. Method Data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases were used to identify prognostic lncRNAs by Cox regression and LASSO. Then a predictive nomogram was constructed based on seven prognostic lncRNAs. In addition, the prognostic potential of the seven-lncRNA signature was verified via survival analysis, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve, and clinicopathologic characteristics correlation analysis. Furthermore, we explored the associations between the signature risk score and immune landscape, and somatic gene mutation. Results We identified 1211 cuproptosis-related lncRNAs and seven survival-related lncRNAs. Patients were categorized into high-risk and low-risk groups with significantly different prognoses. ROC and calibration curve confirmed the good prediction capability of the risk model and nomogram. Somatic mutations between the two groups were compared. We also found that patients in the two groups responded differently to immune checkpoint inhibitors and immunotherapy. Conclusion The proposed novel seven lncRNAs nomogram could predict prognosis and guide treatment of ATM. Further research was required to validate the nomogram.

Abstract Background The purpose of this research was to construct a novel predictive nomogram to identify specific stage IB gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC) populations who could benefit from postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT). Method Between 2004 and 2015, 1889 stage IB GAC patients were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program database. Then Kaplan–Meier survival analysis, univariate and multivariable Cox analyses, and univariate and multivariable logistic analyses were implemented. Finally, the predictive nomograms were constructed. The methods of area under the curve (AUC), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to validate the clinical effectiveness of the models. Results Of these patients, 708 cases underwent ACT, while the other 1181 patients didn’t receive ACT. After PSM, the patients in the ACT group presented a longer median overall survival (133 vs. 85 months, p = 0.0087). Among the ACT group, 194 (36.0%) patients achieving more prolonged overall survival than 85 months were regarded as the beneficiary population. Then the logistic regression analyses were performed, and age, gender, marital status, primary site, tumor size, and regional nodes examined were included as predicting factors to construct the nomogram. The AUC value was 0.725 in the training cohort and 0.739 in the validation cohort, which demonstrated good discrimination. And calibration curves indicated ideal consistency between the predicted and observed probabilities. Decision curve analysis presented a clinically useful model. Furthermore, the prognostic nomogram predicting 1-, 3-, and 5-year cancer-specific survival presented good predictive ability. Conclusion The benefit nomogram could guide clinicians in decision-making and selecting optimal candidates for ACT among stage IB GAC patients. And the prognostic nomogram presented great prediction ability for these patients.

Due to the coexistence of Al3+ and RE3+ and their similar properties, the separation of aluminum from rare earths is difficult. In this study, selective precipitation was used to separate aluminum from rare earth chloride solution via electrochemical regulated hydrolysis. By controlling the current density and electrolytic time, the rate of hydroxyl ion production was regulated, and the selective separation of rare earth and aluminum was realized according to the different precipitation sequences. By altering the temperature, current density, pH value, and other parameters, the separation performance of aluminum from rare earth in mixed rare earth chloride systems was systematically investigated. The removal rate of aluminum reached 88.35%, and the loss rate of rare earth was only 5.99% under optimized conditions. Compared with traditional neutralization hydrolysis, the new process showed higher efficiency and lower rare earth loss rate. Furthermore, a kinetic analysis of aluminum precipitation revealed that the reaction adhered to pseudo-first order kinetics. Additionally, the precipitate obtained via separation and filtration was amorphous alumina hydroxide with a small amount of rare earth attached. No reagent was consumed for the new process, which was more efficient and cleaner, providing a new idea for removing aluminum impurities from rare earth solutions.

Sugars act as the main energy sources in many fruit and vegetable crops. The biosynthesis and transportation of sugars are crucial and especially contribute to growth and development. SWEET is an important gene family that plays a vital role in plants’ growth, development, and adaptation to various types of stresses (biotic and abiotic). Although SWEET genes have been identified in numerous plant species, there is no information on SWEETs in Potentilla anserina. In the present study, we performed a comprehensive genome-wide bioinformatics analysis and identified a total of 23 candidate PaSWEETs genes in the Potentilla anserina genome, which were randomly distributed on ten different chromosomes. The phylogenetic analysis, chromosomal location, gene structure, specific cis-elements, protein interaction network, and physiological characteristics of these genes were systematically examined. The identified results of the phylogenetic relationship with Arabidopsis thaliana revealed that these PaSWEET genes were divided into four clades (I, II, III, and IV). Moreover, tissue-specific gene expression through quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) validation exposed that the identified PaSWEETs were differentially expressed in various tissues (roots, stems, leaves, and flowers). Mainly, the relative fold gene expression in swollen and unswollen tubers effectively revealed that PaSWEETs (7, 9, and 12) were highly expressed (300-, 120-, and 100-fold) in swollen tubers. To further elucidate the function of PaSWEETs (7, 9, and 12), their subcellular location was confirmed by inserting them into tobacco leaves, and it was noted that these genes were present on the cell membrane. On the basis of the overall results, it is suggested that PaSWEETs (7, 9, and 12) are the candidate genes involved in swollen tuber formation in P. anserina. In crux, we speculated that our study provides a valuable theoretical base for further in-depth function analysis of the PaSWEET gene family and their role in tuber development and further enhancing the molecular breeding of Potentilla anserina.

Abstract Background Pleural invasion (PL) has been regarded as an unfavorable prognostic factor for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). But there was no agreement on the optimal surgical extent in NSCLC patients with PL. We aimed to compare the survival outcomes of lobectomy and sub-lobectomy in these patients. Method 2717 patients were included in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and divided into the lobectomy and sub-lobectomy groups. The propensity score matching (PSM) and competing risk analysis were implemented. Then the predictive nomogram was constructed and validated. Results 2230 Patients received lobectomy while the other 487 patients underwent sub-lobectomy. After 1:1 PSM, the cumulative incidence of cancer-specific death (CSD) was lower in the lobectomy group compared with the sub-lobectomy group (1-year: 12% vs. 15%; 3-year: 30% vs. 37%, 5-year: 34% vs. 45%, P = 0.04). Abstract Background This study aimed to investigate the potential effect of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients diagnosed with stage IB gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC). Method A total of 1727 patients were included in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 2004 to 2015 and divided into the chemotherapy and no-chemotherapy groups. Then, the methods of Kaplan-Meier analysis, propensity score matching (PSM), and competing risk analysis were implemented. Results After PSM, no significant difference was found in the chemotherapy and no-chemotherapy groups in overall survival (OS) (p=0.4) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) (p=0.12) in survival curves. The competing risk analysis presented that the 5-year cumulative incidence of cancer-specific death (CSD) was significantly lower in patients receiving chemotherapy (11.5% vs. 20.8%, p=0.007), while no significant discrepancy was observed in other causes of death (OCD) in both groups (10.6% vs. 10.9%, p=0.474). Multivariable competing risks regression models presented a significant correlation between chemotherapy and CSD (HR, 0.51; 95%CI, 0.31–0.82; p=0.007). Conclusion The stage IB GAC patients can benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy based on this competing risk analysis.

Background This study aimed to develop a novel predictive nomogram to identify specific stage IB non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) populations who could benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT). Method Stage IB NSCLC patients were included in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and divided into the ACT and non-ACT groups. Then the methods of Kaplan-Meier analysis, propensity score matching (PSM), Least absolute shrink and selection operator (LASSO) regression, and multivariate logistic regression analyses were implemented. Finally, the predictive nomogram was constructed and validated. Results 9055 stage IB NSCLC patients were enrolled from the SEER database while 47 patients from Hangzhou TCM Hospital Affiliated to Zhejiang Chinese Medical University were identified as the external validation cohort. Of these patients, 1334 cases underwent ACT while the other 7721 patients didn’t receive ACT. After PSM, the patients in the ACT group presented longer median overall survival (100 vs 82 months, P < .001). Among the ACT group, 482 (49.6%) patients achieving more prolonged overall survival than 82 months were regarded as the beneficiary population. Then the LASSO regression and multivariate logistic regression analyses were implemented. Finally, 8 predictors were selected for model construction, including age, gender, marital status, laterality, pathology, tumor size, regional nodes examined, and tumor size. The predictive nomogram demonstrated good discrimination in the training cohort (AUC = .781), internal validation cohort (AUC = .772), and external validation cohort (AUC = .851). And calibration curves indicated ideal consistency between the predicted and observed probabilities. Decision curve analysis presented a clinically useful model. Conclusion The practical nomogram could guide treatment decision-making and select optimal ACT candidates among stage IB NSCLC patients.

Sugar Will Eventually be Exported Transporter (SWEET) proteins are a recently discovered group of efflux transporters that play essential roles in sugar efflux, phloem loading, reproductive tissue development and stress responses. To date, there have been no reports on the Rosa rugosa (R. rugosa) SWEET genes. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive genomic analysis of the SWEET genes, including chromosome localization, phylogenetic comparison, cis-regulatory element analysis, expression pattern analysis in different tissues, expression pattern analysis under cold stress and subcellular localization analysis. A total of 33RrSWEET members were identified and classified into four distinct clades (Clade I, Clade II, Clade III and Clade IV). They were distributed across seven chromosomes and contained cis-regulatory elements associated with hormone and stress responses. The expression of RrSWEETs showed tissue specificity, with higher expression in roots, flowers or pistils compared to other tissues. Furthermore, during the entire cold stress process, the relative expression levels of RrSWEET4, 16 and 20 were significantly upregulated, especially in the roots and stems of R. rugosa. Subcellular localization analysis revealed that RrSWEET4, 16 and 20 were located on the cell membrane. In summary, the results of this study provide a theoretical basis for future research on the functions of RrSWEET genes in R. rugosa and their role in cold tolerance responses.

During the “Parade Blue” period in 2015, Beijing and its surrounding areas implemented mandatory temporary source control strategies, which provided experimental conditions for studying the effects of source emission control measures on the sources of atmospheric PM2.5. Analyzing the source contribution rate of the main particulate matters via the source analysis method of the receptor model is an important method for studying the atmospheric pollution. Previous studies on the “Parade Blue” period only discussed the change in PM2.5 concentration during the source control period and the source non-control period, but did not select appropriate emission sources and acceptor components to analyze the contribution ratio of each emission source to fine particulate matter pollution. In this paper, based on the receptor component spectrum and emission source component spectrum, the chemical mass balance receptor model was used for source analysis. The results showed that outdoor PM2.5 concentration was 26.31 μg/m3 in the source control period, which was less than the 40.08 μg/m3 in the source non-control period. In the source control period, motor vehicle emissions, industrial combustion and urban fugitive dust contributed significantly to the fine particulate pollution, accounting for 76–81%, 8–9% and 11–16%, respectively. In the source non-control period, the contributions of motor vehicle emissions and industrial combustion accounted for 57–59% and 41–43%, respectively, significantly higher than that of urban fugitive dust, which accounted for less than 2%. The correlation between the contribution rate of emission sources and the source control strategy was studied and analyzed during the “Parade Blue” period, and the effectiveness of the source control strategy was proved.

Abstract Objectives This study was designed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a two-hand technique combining harmonic scalpel (HS) and laparoscopic Peng’s multifunction operative dissector (LPMOD) in patients who underwent laparoscopic hemihepatectomy (LHH). Methods We designed and conducted a case-control study nested in a prospectively collected laparoscopic liver surgery database. Patients who underwent LHH for liver parenchyma transection using HS + LPMOD were defined as cases (n = 98) and LPMOD only as controls (n = 47) from January 2016 to May 2018. Propensity score matching (1:1) between the case and control groups was used in the analyses. Results The case group had significantly less intraoperative blood loss in milliliters (169.4 ± 133.5 vs. 221.5 ± 176.3, P = 0.03) and shorter operative time in minutes (210.5 ± 56.1 vs. 265.7 ± 67.1, P = 0.02) comparing to the control group. The conversion to laparotomy, postoperative hospital stay, resection margin, the mean peak level of postoperative liver function parameters, bile leakage rate, and others were comparable between the two groups. There was no perioperative mortality. Conclusions We demonstrated that the two-handed technique combing HS and LPMOD in LHH is safe and effective which is associated with shorter operative time and less intraoperative blood loss compared with LPMOD alone. The technique facilitates laparoscopic liver resection and is recommended for use.

We consider a joint inventory-pricing control problem in a single-product, periodic-review, dual-supplier inventory system. The two suppliers have different lead times. One expedited supplier offers instantaneous replenishment, and one regular supplier requires an L-period lead time for delivery. The supply quantity is stochastic and the demand is price-dependent. For the expedited inventory replenishment, we characterize the optimal policy as a state-dependent almost-threshold policy by extending the stochastically linear in mid-point to a multidimensional setting. To investigate the optimal regular inventory replenishment and pricing policy, we propose the notions of partially stochastic translation (PST) and increasing partially stochastic translation (IPST), which help in obtaining the antimultimodularity preservation in dynamic programming problems. We provide properties, sufficient conditions, and examples for PST and IPST functions. By applying PST and IPST, we obtain the antimultimodularity of the profit functions. The antimultimodular profit functions ensure that the optimal regular ordering quantity and the optimal price are monotone in the current inventory level and outstanding order quantities. Moreover, we reveal that as the time interval increases, the effects of previous outstanding orders on the optimal regular ordering and pricing decisions are decreasing and increasing, respectively. PST and IPST also enable us to further characterize the optimal expedited ordering quantity as decreasing in the inventory level. However, the optimal expedited ordering quantity can be non-monotone with respect to the outstanding order quantities, as shown in the example.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a global health challenge with an increasing incidence worldwide. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) function critically in HCC initiation and development. However, the prognostic significance of CAF-related gene signatures in HCC remains unknown. Therefore, the specific functions of CAF-related genes in HCC were investigated to help develop potential therapeutic strategies. In this study, CAF-related genes were screened from three CAF-related gene sets. HCC data from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was applied to verify the screened CAF-related genes. Cluster analysis was used to identify clusters based on the expression pattern of CAF-related genes and two identified clusters were found to have a significant difference in overall survival (OS) and progression free intervals (PFI). The prognosis of HCC patients was predicted using the prognostic risk score model developed based on HCC data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) databases. High-risk group patients had a worse OS than those in low-risk group in TCGA. These results were validated in International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) database. Moreover, combining the clinicopathological characteristics related to prognosis with the model, a nomogram was built for a more accurate prediction of OS of HCC patients. In addition, analyses of immune infiltration characteristics of tumor microenvironment (TME), chemosensitivity, and immunotherapy response were conducted to further evaluate the prognostic value of CAF-related genes. Patients with low-risk scores were found to have higher chemosensitivity to cisplatin, doxorubicin, and sorafenib. Individuals with high-risk scores were found with a higher expression of most immune checkpoints which indicated patients with high-risk scores may benefit more from treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors. Furthermore, a correlation between immune infiltration characteristics of TME and patients with different risk levels was found. These findings provide a possibility for the further development of personalized treatments in HCC.

Background: Laparoscopic repeat hepatectomy (LRH) is a technically challenging procedure, so LRH for recurrent liver cancer has not been widely accepted. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review of the current literature to identify and evaluate available data of LRH for recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (rHCC) and metastases tumour of liver, especially of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM), focusing on the safety and feasibility. Methods: A comprehensive search of the PubMed database was performed for all studies published in English evaluating LRH for rHCC and recurrent metastases tumour of liver from 1st January, 2005 to 1st June, 2019. Results: A total of 15 studies which comprised 444 patients and reported outcomes for the efficacy and safety of LRH in the treatment of rHCC or CRLM were included in the present review. Moreover, nine studies compared the perioperative outcomes of LRH versus open repeat hepatectomy (ORH). LRH was superior to ORH with reduced blood loss, shorter operative time, shorter hospital stay and lower morbidity rates. Conclusions: LRH can safely performed in rHCC or CRLM patients with cirrhosis, previous open hepatectomy, multiple recurrent lesions and tumours located in difficult posterosuperior segments.

Abstract Background KLF5 is a member of the Kruppel-like factor, subfamily of zinc finger proteins that are involved in cancers. KLF5 functions as a transcription factor and regulates the diverse protein-coding genes (PCGs) in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) regulated by KLF5 in CRC are currently unknown. Methods In this study, we first designed a computational pipeline to determine the PCG and lncRNA targets of KLF5 in CRC. Then we analyzed the motif pattern of the binding regions for the lncRNA targets. The regulatory co-factors of KLF5 were then searched for through bioinformatics analysis. We also constructed a regulatory network for KLF5 and annotated its functions. Finally, one of the KLF5 lncRNA targets, SNHG12, was selected to further explore its expression pattern and functions in CRC. Results We were able to identify 19 lncRNA targets of KLF5 and found that the motifs of the lncRNA binding sites were GC-enriched. Next, we pinpointed the transcription factors AR and HSF1 as the regulatory co-factors of KLF5 through bioinformatics analysis. Then, through the analysis of the regulatory network, we found that KLF5 may be involved in DNA replication, DNA repair, and the cell cycle. Furthermore, in the cell cycle module, the SNHG12 up-regulating expression pattern was verified in the CRC cell lines and tissues, associating it to CRC invasion and distal metastasis. This indicates that SNHG12 may play a critical part in CRC tumorigenesis and progression. Additionally, expression of SNHG12 was found to be down-regulated in CRC cell lines when KLF5 expression was knocked-down by siRNA; and a strong correlation was observed between the expression levels of SNHG12 and KLF5, further alluding to their regulatory relationship. Conclusions In conclusion, the network analysis of KLF5 targets indicates that SNHG12 may be a significant lncRNA in CRC.

Abstract Quantum dots (QDs) as emerging light-converting materials show the advantage of enhancing color quality of white light-emitting diode (WLED). However, WLEDs employing narrow-emitting monochromic QDs usually present unsatisfactory color rendering in the orange region. Herein, composite orange-red QDs (composite-QDs) are developed through mixing CdSe/ZnS-based orange QDs (O-QDs) and red QDs (R-QDs) to compensate the orange-red light for WLEDs. We investigated the effect of self-absorption and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process in composite-QDs on the spectral controllability and fluorescent quenching in WLEDs. The concentration and donor/acceptor ratios were also taken into account to analyze the FRET efficiency and help identify suitable composite-QDs for color compensation in the orange-red light region. As the result, the optimized composite-QDs effectively improve the color rendering index of the WLED compared with monochromatic QDs.

BackgroundThiopurines are widely used as anti-cancer and immunosuppressant agents, but have a narrow therapeutic index owing to frequent toxicity and life-threatening bone marrow suppression. The nudix hydrolase 15 (NUDT15) genetic polymorphism is strongly associated with the tolerance and myelosuppressive effect of mercaptopurine administration, but the frequency of NUDT15 variants is known to vary among different ethnic groups or nationalities. At present, the NUDT15 gene polymorphism in ethnic minorities such as the Uighur, Kirghiz, and Dai nationalities in China is unclear.ProcedureDNA samples were isolated from 1,071 Chinese children, including 675 Han children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and 396 healthy minority children, including 118 Uighur, 126 Kirghiz, and 152 Dai participants. The coding regions of NUDT15 exons 1 to 3 were amplified by polymerase chain reaction. NUDT15 genotypes were identified by Sanger sequencing.ResultsFive NUDT15 genetic variants of coding regions including rs746071566 (c.55_56insGAGTCG), rs186364861 (c.52G > A), c.137C > G, and c.138T > G in exon 1, and the variant rs116855232 (c.415C > T) in exon 3 were found among the participants. The frequency of NUDT15 rs746071566 variants was lower in the Uighur and Kirghiz populations than in the Han population and in other East Asian nationalities, while the frequency of c.415C > T variants was lower in the Dai population. The c.52G > A variant was relatively uncommon in children of the Han, Uighur, Kirghiz, and Dai ethnic groups. Notably, the rare variants c.137C > G and c.138T > G in a Uighur child were predicted to be disruptive sites.ConclusionIn summary, our results illustrate the NUDT15 polymorphisms in Chinese children of Han, Uighur, Kirghiz, and Dai nationalities, and provide the most effective detection recommendations for different ethnic groups to predict thiopurine-related toxicity, which could be used to guide future clinical thiopurine dose adjustment.

Acoustic vector sensor (AVS) is a kind of sensor widely used in underwater detection. Traditional methods use the covariance matrix of the received signal to estimate the direction-of-arrival (DOA), which not only loses the timing structure of the signal but also has the problem of weak anti-noise ability. Therefore, this paper proposes two DOA estimation methods for underwater AVS arrays, one based on a long short-term memory network and attention mechanism (LSTM-ATT), and the other based on Transformer. These two methods can capture the contextual information of sequence signals and extract features with important semantic information. The simulation results show that the two proposed methods perform much better than the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) method, especially in the case of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the DOA estimation accuracy has been greatly improved. The accuracy of the DOA estimation method based on Transformer is comparable to that of the DOA estimation method based on LSTM-ATT, but the computational efficiency is obviously better than that of the DOA estimation method based on LSTM-ATT. Therefore, the DOA estimation method based on Transformer proposed in this paper can provide a reference for fast and effective DOA estimation under low SNR.

Including legumes in the cereal cropping could improve the crop yield and the uptake of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) of subsequent cereals. The effects of legume-cereal crop rotations on the soil microbial community have been studied in recent years, the impact on soil functional genes especially involved in P cycling is raising great concerns. The metagenomic approach was used to investigate the impacts of crop rotation managements of soybean-wheat (SW) and maize-wheat (MW) lasting 2 and 7years on soil microbial communities and genes involved in P transformation in a field experiment. Results indicated that SW rotation increased the relative abundances of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, reduced Actinobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, and Chloroflexi compared to MW rotation. gcd, phoR, phoD, and ppx predominated in genes involved in P transformation in both rotations. Genes of gcd, ppa, and ugpABCE showed higher abundances in SW rotation than in MW rotation, whereas gadAC and pstS showed less abundances. Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Gemmatimonadetes played predominant roles in microbial P cycling. Our study provides a novel insight into crop P, which requires strategy and help to understand the mechanism of improving crop nutrient uptake and productivity in different rotations.

Left-sided colon cancer (LCC) and right-sided colon cancer (RCC) have distinct characteristics in tumor immune microenvironment (TIME). Although existing studies have shown a strong association between gene mutations and TIME, whether the regulatory mechanisms between gene mutations and TIME are different between RCC and LCC is still unclear. In this study, we showed the fractions of CD8+ T cells were higher while those of regulatory T cells were lower in RCC. Besides, a stronger association between gene mutations and TIME was observed in RCC. Specifically, using multi-omics data, we demonstrated the mutations of most top mutated genes (TMGs) including BRAF, PCLO, MUC16, LRP2, ANK3, KMT2D, RYR2 made great contributions to elevated fraction of immune cells by up-regulating immune-related genes directly or indirectly through miRNA and DNA methylation, whereas the effects of APC, TP53 and KRAS mutations on TIME were reversed in RCC. Remarkably, we found the expression levels of several immune checkpoint molecules such as PD-1 and LAG3 were correlated with corresponding DNA methylation levels, which were associated with the mutations of TMGs in RCC. In contrast, the associations between gene mutations and TIME were less significant in LCC. Besides, survival analyses showed APC mutation had adverse impact on immunotherapy while patients with BRAF mutation were more suitable for immunotherapy in colon cancer. We hope that our results will provide a deeper insight into the sophisticated mechanism underlying the regulation between mutations and TIME, and thus boost the discovery of differential immunotherapeutic strategies for RCC and LCC.

Droughts are among the most damaging environmental disasters that may have destructive damages on societal properties and lives. Generally, socio-economic drought occurs when water resources systems could not fulfil the water demand. Additionally, it is not to be overlooked the role of local reservoirs in modifying uneven distribution of water and coping with climatic extremes. This study examined the evolution characteristics of the socio-economic droughts via applying a Multivariate Standardized Reliability and Resilience Index (MSRRI). Furthermore, the influences of anomalous atmospheric circulation on the socio-economic droughts were explored through adopting the cross wavelet analysis to investigate the meteorological driving force behind the socio-economic droughts. Results mainly indicated that (1) the MSRRI has proven to be effective in evaluating socio-economic droughts for its integration of inflow-demand reliability and water storage resilience indexes; (2) the MSRRI series in Datong River Basin (DRB) has a non-significant increasing trend at annual scale with apparent periods (17 and 22 years) and (3) the comprehensive effects of ENSO, EASM and PNA contribute to the socio-economic drought variations, and the ENSO has strongest impacts than others. The findings in this study benefit local socioeconomic drought mitigation and water resources planning and management.

Hematopoiesis is a finely regulated process in vertebrates under both homeostatic and stress conditions. By whole exome sequencing, we studied the genomics of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients who needed multiple red blood cell (RBC) transfusions after intensive chemotherapy treatment. ARHGEF12, encoding a RhoA guanine nucleotide exchange factor, was found to be associated with chemotherapy-induced anemia by genome-wide association study analyses. A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of ARHGEF12 located in an intron predicted to be a GATA1 binding site, rs10892563, is significantly associated with patients who need RBC transfusion (P=3.469E-03, odds ratio 5.864). A luciferase reporter assay revealed that this SNP impairs GATA1-mediated trans-regulation of ARHGEF12, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction studies confirmed that the homozygotes status is associated with an approximately 61% reduction in ARHGEF12 expression (P=0.0088). Consequently, erythropoiesis was affected at the pro-erythroblast phases. The role of ARHGEF12 and its homologs in erythroid differentiation was confirmed in human K562 cells, mouse 32D cells and primary murine bone marrow cells. We further demonstrated in zebrafish by morpholino-mediated knockdown and CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout of arhgef12 that its reduction resulted in erythropoiesis defects. The p38 kinase pathway was affected by the ARHGEF12-RhoA signaling in K562 cells, and consistently, the Arhgef12-RhoA-p38 pathway was also shown to be important for erythroid differentiation in zebrafish as active RhoA or p38 readily rescued the impaired erythropoiesis caused by arhgef12 knockdown. Finally, ARHGEF12-mediated p38 activity also appeared to be involved in phenotypes of patients of the rs10892563 homozygous genotype. Our findings present a novel SNP of ARHGEF12 that may involve ARHGEF12-RhoA-p38 signaling in erythroid regeneration in ALL patients after chemotherapy.

Abstract Projection of future drought is often involved large uncertainties from climate models, emission scenarios as well as drought definitions. In this study, we investigate changes in future droughts in the conterminous United States based on 97 1/8 degree hydro-climate model projections. Instead of focusing on a specific drought type, we investigate changes in meteorological, agricultural, and hydrological drought as well as the concurrences. Agricultural and hydrological droughts are projected to become more frequent with increase in global mean temperature, while less meteorological drought is expected. Changes in drought intensity scale linearly with global temperature rises under RCP8.5 scenario, indicating the potential feasibility to derive future drought severity given certain global warming amount under this scenario. Changing pattern of concurrent droughts generally follows that of agricultural and hydrological droughts. Under the 1.5 °C warming target as advocated in recent Paris agreement, several hot spot regions experiencing highest droughts are identified. Extreme droughts show similar patterns but with much larger magnitude than the climatology. This study highlights the distinct response of droughts of various types to global warming and the asymmetric impact of global warming on drought distribution resulting in a much stronger influence on extreme drought than on mean drought.

CdSe/CdS core-shell quantum rods (QRs) are a promising prospect in optoelectronic applications but usually have a relatively low quantum efficiency and stability. Here, we report on an efficient and stable CdSe/CdS/ZnS QRs-in-matrix assembly (QRAs) by growing and embedding CdSe/CdS QRs in ZnS matrices. Structural characterizations show that the CdSe/CdS QRs are encapsulated and interconnected by ZnS in the QRAs structure. The stable ZnS encapsulation renders the CdSe/CdS QRs high quantum efficiency (QE) up to 85%. The QRAs also present high photo- and thermal-stability and can preserve 93% of the initial QE at 100 °C. The QRAs powder presents a light degradation of only 2% under continuous excitation for 100 h, displaying profound potential in optoelectronic applications. White light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are fabricated by packaging the QRAs powder as phosphor on top of blue GaN chip. The WLED shows high optical performance and light quality.

Monitoring variations in terrestrial water storage (TWS) is of great significance for the management of water resources. However, it remains a challenge to continuously monitor TWS variations using in situ observations and hydrological models because of a limited number of gauge stations and the complicated spatial distribution characteristics of TWS. In contrast, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) could overcome the aforementioned restrictions, providing a new reliable means of observing TWS variation. Thus, GRACE was employed to investigate TWS variations in Northwest China (NWC) between April 2002 and March 2016. Unlike previous studies, we focused on the interactions of multiple climatic and vegetational factors, and their combined effects on TWS variation. In addition, we also analyzed the relationship between TWS variations and socioeconomic water consumption. The results indicated that (i) TWS had obvious seasonal variations in NWC, and showed significant decreasing trends in most parts of NWC at the 95% confidence level; (ii) decreasing sunshine duration and wind speed resulted in an increase in TWS in Qinghai province, whereas the increasing air temperature, ameliorative vegetational coverage, and excessive groundwater withdrawal jointly led to a decrease in TWS in the other provinces of NWC; (iii) TWS variations in NWC had a good correlation with water storage variations in cascade reservoirs of the upper Yellow River; and (iv) the overall interactions between multiple climatic and vegetational factors were obvious, and the strong effects of some climatic and vegetational factors could mask the weak influences of other factors in TWS variations in NWC. Hence, it is necessary to focus on the interactions of multiple factors and their combined effects on TWS variations when exploring the causes of TWS variations.

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) have been widely applied worldwide in recent years because of their high efficiency and environmental friendliness. An accurate estimation of the thermal conductivity of rock and soil layers is important in the design of GSHP systems. The distributed thermal response test (DTRT) method incorporates the standard test with a pair of fiber optic-distributed temperature sensors in the U-tube to accurately calculate the layered thermal conductivity of the rock/soil. In this work, in situ layered thermal conductivity was initially obtained by DTRT for four boreholes in the study region. A series of laboratory tests was also conducted on the rock samples obtained from drilling. Then, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to predict the layered thermal conductivity on the basis of the DTRT results. The primary modeling factors were water content, density, and porosity. The results showed that the ANN models can predict the layered thermal conductivity with an absolute error of less than 0.1 W/(m·K). Finally, the trained ANN models were used to predict the layered thermal conductivity for another study region, in which only the effective thermal conductivity was measured with the thermal response test (TRT). To verify the accuracy of the prediction, the product of pipe depth and layered thermal conductivity was suggested to represent heat transfer capacity. The results showed that the discrepancies between the TRT and ANN models were 5.43% and 6.37% for two boreholes, respectively. The results prove that the proposed method can be used to determine layered thermal conductivity.

2D Bi2O2Se is an intriguing building block for next-generation optoelectronic devices owing to its ultrahigh electron mobility and ultrabroadband photodetection capability. However, fully exploiting its advantages in advanced optoelectronic applications remains greatly challenging owing to the lack of in-depth understanding of the morphological evolution of Bi2O2Se crystals and efficient methods for enhancing their photoresponse. Herein, we developed a novel "cage-confinement" technique to achieve dimensionality-tunable growth of Bi2O2Se crystals in a space-confined CVD system. It can effectively control the key parameter of determining the dimensionality of crystals, referred to as the elastic strain energy of nucleation (ΔGs), by tuning the active area size of Bi2O3 seeds at a suitable flow rate of carrier gas. Furthermore, based on an optimized van der Waals transfer technique of crystals and electrodes, a sheet-shaped phototransistor of Bi2O2Se has a high responsivity (R) of ∼74 000 A W-1 and detectivity (D*) of ∼4.0 × 1011 Jones. Meanwhile, a wire-shaped device demonstrates an impressive R value of 300 000 A W-1, D* value of 3.9 × 1012 Jones and photoconductance gain (Gph) of 1.2 × 105. These results surpass most reported Bi2O2Se-based detectors and pave the way for the applications of 2D layered semiconductors in advanced optoelectronic devices and technologies.
