Agarwood is a rare and valuable heartwood derived from Aquilaria sinensis in China. Compared with ordinary germplasm, Chi-Nan, a special germplasm of A. sinensis, has a better agarwood-producing capacity. However, the mechanisms underlying their different qualities remain poorly characterized. Here, a comparative transcriptome analysis of Chi-Nan and ordinary A. sinensis was carried out to investigate the wound responses of both germplasms. A total of 198.19 Gb of clean data were obtained with an average of 6.61 Gb of clean reads for each sample. By comparing with their control groups, more differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were observed in Chi-Nan germplasm. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and expression profile analysis suggested that Chi-Nan possesses a stronger ability to respond to wounding. Furthermore, the enrichment of biosynthetic pathways related to sesquiterpenes and 2-(2-phenylethyl) chromones (PECs) were more significant in Chi-Nan than in ordinary germplasm, and related genes showed significantly higher up-regulation in Chi-Nan after wounding. Sixteen candidate genes presumably involved in biosynthesis of agarwood components were identified and found to exhibit higher up-regulation in Chi-Nan than in ordinary germplasm in response to wounding. Overall, these results are helpful in explaining reasons for the higher agarwood-producing properties of Chi-Nan, and contribute to a further understanding of the mechanism of agarwood formation in A. sinensis.

Abstract Dragon's blood, the red resin derived from the wounded Dracaena, is a precious traditional medicine used by different culture. Dracaena cochinchinensis is one of the main species of Dracaena, and is the endangered medicinal plants in China. The vulnerable status severely limits the medicinal value and wide application of dragon’s blood. Therefore, it’s essential to analyze the mechanisms that form dragon’s blood in order to increase artificial production. To clarify the mechanisms forming dragon’s blood, understanding gene expression in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway is the foundation. However, reference genes of D. cochinchinensis haven’t been analyzed. In this study, expression profiles of seven commonly used housekeeping genes (Actin, α-EF, UBC, β-tubulin, 18S, GAPDH, His) were evaluated by using quantitative real-time PCR combined with the algorithms geNorm, NormFinder, BestKeeper, and RefFinder. On the basis of overall stability ranking, the best reference genes were the combinations β-tubulin +UBC for wounded stems and α-EF +18S + Actin for different organs. Reliability of the recommended reference genes was validated by normalizing relative expression of two key enzyme genes PAL1 and CHI1 in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway. The results provide a foundation to study gene expression in future research on D. cochinchinensis or other Dracaena.

Abstract To investigate the association between T2DM and IBD by bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) to clarify the casual relationship. Independent genetic variants for T2DM and IBD were selected as instruments from published genome-wide association studies (GWAS), mainly in European ancestry. Instrumental variables (IVs) associated with T2DM and IBD were extracted separately from the largest GWAS meta-analysis. MR analyses included inverse variance weighting, weighted median estimator, MR Egger regression, and sensitivity analyses with Steiger filtering and MR PRESSO. In the data samples for Ulcerative colitis (UC) (6968 cases, 20,464 controls) and Crohn's disease (CD) (5956 cases, 14,927 controls), there was a negative causal relationship between T2DM and UC [IVW, OR/95%CI: 0.882/(0.826,0.942), p 0.05). The results of the bidirectional MR Study suggest that T2DM has a negative causal effect on UC, which provides implications for clinical treatment decisions in IBD patients with T2DM. The findings do not support a causal relationship between T2DM and CD, UC and T2DM, or CD and T2DM, and the impact of IBD on T2DM needs further investigation.

The airport and its surrounding areas are home to a variety of pollution sources, and air pollution is a recognized health concern for local populated regions. Submicron particulate matter (PM1 with an aerodynamic diameter of 1 poses a great threat to human health. To comprehensively assess the source-specific health effects of PM1-bound HMs in an airport community, PM1 filter samples were collected around the Tianjin Binhai International Airport for 12 h during the daytime and nighttime, both in the spring and summer, and 10 selected HMs (V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) were analyzed. The indicatory elements of aircraft emissions were certified as Zn and Pb, which accounted for more than 60% of the sum concentration of detected HMs. The health risks assessment showed that the total non-cancer risks (TNCRs) of PM1-bound HMs were 0.28 in the spring and 0.23 in the summer, which are lower than the safety level determined by the USEPA, and the total cancer risk (TCR) was 2.37 × 10−5 in the spring and 2.42 × 10−5 in the summer, implying that there were non-negligible cancer risks in the Tianjin Airport Community. After source apportionment with EF values and PMF model, four factors have been determined in both seasons. Consequently, the source-specific health risks were also evaluated by combining the PMF model with the health risk assessment model. For non-cancer risk, industrial sources containing high concentrations of Mn were the top contributors in both spring (50.4%) and summer (44.2%), while coal combustion with high loads of As and Cd posed the highest cancer risk in both seasons. From the perspective of health risk management, targeted management and control strategies should be adopted for industrial emissions and coal combustion in the Tianjin Airport Community.

Sesquiterpenes are characteristic components and important quality criterions for agarwood. Although sesquiterpenes are well-known to be biosynthesized by sesquiterpene synthases (TPSs), to date, only a few TPS genes involved in agarwood formation have been reported. Here, two new TPS genes, namely, TPS9 and TPS12, were isolated from Aquilaria sinensis (Lour.) Gilg, and their functions were examined in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3), with farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP) and geranyl pyrophosphate (GPP) as the substrate of the corresponding enzyme activities. They were both identified as a multiproduct enzymes. After incubation with FPP, TPS9 liberated β-farnesene and cis-sesquisabinene hydrate as main products, with cedrol and another unidentified sesquiterpene as minor products. TPS12 catalyzes the formation of β-farnesene, nerolidol, γ-eudesmol, and hinesol. After incubation with GPP, TPS9 generated citronellol and geraniol as main products, with seven minor products. TPS12 converted GPP into four monoterpenes, with citral as the main product, and three minor products. Both TPS9 and TPS12 showed much higher expression in the two major tissues emitting floral volatiles: flowers and agarwood. Further, RT-PCR analysis showed TPS9 and TPS12 are typical genes mainly expressed during later stages of stress response, which is better known than that of chromone derivatives. This study will advance our understanding of agarwood formation and provide a solid theoretical foundation for clarifying its mechanism in A. sinensis.

Epistaxis is a typical presentation in the otolaryngology and emergency department. When compressive therapy fails, directive nasal cautery is necessary, which strongly recommended operating under the nasal endoscope if it is possible. Limited by the operator's clinical experience, complications such as recurrence, nasal ulcer, and septum perforation may occur due to insufficient or excessive cautery. At present, deep learning technology is widely used in the medical field because of its accurate and efficient recognition ability, but it is still blank in the research of epistaxis. In this work, we first gathered and retrieved the Nasal Bleeding dataset, which was annotated and confirmed by many clinical specialists, filling a void in this sector. Second, we created ETU-Net, a deep learning model that smartly integrated the excellent performance of attention convolution with Transformer, overcoming the traditional model's difficulties in capturing contextual feature information and insufficient sequence modeling skills in picture segmentation. On the Nasal Bleeding dataset, our proposed model outperforms all others models that we tested. The segmentation recognition index, Intersection over Union, and F1-Score were 94.57 and 97.15%. Ultimately, we summarized effective ways of combining artificial intelligence with medical treatment and tested it on multiple general datasets to prove its feasibility. The results show that our method has good domain adaptability and has a cutting-edge reference for future medical technology development.

Objective: To assess whether chronic endometritis (CE) affects embryo implantation in patients with repeated implantation failure (RIF). Materials and methods: We retrospectively analyzed 126 RIF patients who were never diagnosed with CE and received no prior antibiotic therapy. Endometrial specimens obtained by endometrial scratching during mid-luteal phase were immunostained by CD138, a hallmark plasmacyte marker, to identify CE. Pregnancy outcome in RIF patients who underwent IVF-ET frozen-embryo within transfers 6 months after endometrial scratching was compared between women with and without CE. Results: The prevalence of CE in patients with RIF was found to be 11.9% (15/126). Moreover, a significantly reduced clinical pregnancy rate was observed in RIF patients with CE (20% vs. 46.85%; p = 0.04). The live birth rate also exhibited a decreasing trend in RIF patients with CE, although there was no statistically significant difference (20% vs. 41.58%; p = 0.109). Conclusions: CE may be involved in the failure of embryo implantation and reduced clinical pregnancy outcome in patients with RIF.

Abstract Background Agarwood is a valuable Chinese medicinal herb and spice that is produced from wounded Aquilaria spp., is widely used in Southeast Asia and is highly traded on the market. The lack of highly responsive Aquilaria lines has seriously restricted agarwood yield and the development of its industry. In this article, a comparative transcriptome analysis was carried out between ordinary A. sinensis and Chi-Nan germplasm, which is a kind of A. sinensis tree with high agarwood-producing capacity in response to wounding stress, to elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying wounding stress in different A. sinensis germplasm resources and to help identify and breed high agarwood-producing strains. Results A total of 2427 and 1153 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected in wounded ordinary A. sinensis and Chi-Nan germplasm compared with the control groups, respectively. KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that genes participating in starch metabolism, secondary metabolism and plant hormone signal transduction might play major roles in the early regulation of wound stress. 86 DEGs related to oxygen metabolism, JA pathway and sesquiterpene biosynthesis were identified. The majority of the expression of these genes was differentially induced between two germplasm resources under wounding stress. 13 candidate genes related to defence and sesquiterpene biosynthesis were obtained by WGCNA. Furthermore, the expression pattern of genes were verified by qRT-PCR. The candidate genes expression levels were higher in Chi-Nan germplasm than that in ordinary A. sinensis during early stage of wounding stress, which may play important roles in regulating high agarwood-producing capacity in Chi-Nan germplasm. Conclusions Compared with A. sinensis, Chi-Nan germplasm invoked different biological processes in response to wounding stress. The genes related to defence signals and sesquiterepene biosynthesis pathway were induced to expression differentially between two germplasm resources. A total of 13 candidate genes were identified, which may correlate with high agarwood-producting capacity in Chi-Nan germplasm during the early stage of wounding stress. These genes will contribute to the development of functional molecular markers and the rapid breeding highly of responsive Aquilaria lines.

Abstract Background Promoting the browning of white adipose tissue (WAT) is a promising approach for the treatment of obesity and related comorbidities because it increases energy expenditure. In this study, we investigated whether Dihydromyricetin (DHM), a flavonoid component, could ameliorate diet-induced obesity through promoting the browning of WAT. Methods Male C57BL/6 J mice were received a high-fat diet (HFD) to induce obesity and subsequently were treated with DHM (100 mg/kg/day) or vehicle for 4 weeks. The effects of DHM on weight reduction and metabolic phenotype improvement were observed in the mice. The expression of genes and protein involved in browning of WAT were assessed in inguinal WAT (iWAT) of the mice. Then, the effect of DHM on the inducing browning program was verified in adipocytes differentiated from stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells of mouse iWAT. Finally, the mechanism by which DHM improves the browning of WAT was explored using RNA-seq and luciferase reporter assay. Results We find that DHM reduces body weight, decreases WAT mass, improves glucose and lipid metabolic disorders, and ameliorates hepatic steatosis in diet-induced obese (DIO) mice. Further studies show that DHM induces WAT browning, which is manifested by increased expression of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator (PGC)-1α and enhanced mitochondrial activity in iWAT and primary adipocytes. In addition, we also find that DHM enhances interferon regulatory factor 4 (IRF4) expression, which is a key transcriptional regulator of PGC-1α. Conclusion Our findings identify that DHM prevents obesity by inducing the browning of WAT through the upregulation of IRF4/PGC-1α, which may have potential therapeutic implications for the treatment of obesity.

Eutrophication alters the function of lake ecosystems through phytoplankton blooms and is a major contributor to organic carbon (OC) burial in lakes worldwide. Although Lake Taihu is notable for its severe eutrophication yet low OC burial, why cyanobacteria-derived OC is ineffectively buried in the lake is unknown. Because seasonal hydrological and ecological dynamics in eutrophic lacustrine ecosystems would significantly modify the preservation and degradation behaviors of OC, seasonal variations in paired particulate samples from both the water column and surface sediment are critical in evaluating cyanobacteria-derived OC burial. In this study, we present the steroid results of water and sediments collected from Meiliang Bay in Lake Taihu across cyanobacteria-bloom and decay seasons (from May 2018 to June 2019) to investigate constraints on the seasonal burial of autochthonous and allochthonous OC. The results indicate that cyanobacteria contribute a considerable amount of OC to the water body in the cyanobacterial bloom season, while terrestrial OC becomes the main contributor during the cyanobacterial decay season. Although OC degradation occurs throughout the water column, substantially more OC degradation was observed at the water-sediment interface. The extensive degradation of OC in the bloom season eventually reverses the seasonal distribution characteristics of particulate OC in the water column, leading to less accumulation of OC under the background of higher cyanobacteria-derived OC input. The combined effect of OC bioavailability, temperature, oxygen exposure, and more importantly microorganism activities, accounts for much higher OC degradation rates in the bloom season. Similar phenomena were observed in subtropical shallow lakes with high primary productivity, suggesting that eutrophication might have a limited influence on OC burial when compared to other factors related to OC degradation.

Abstract Background Acute lung injury (ALI) is a potentially fatal disorder that is largely caused by inflammation. Sodium isostevanol (STV‐Na) is a terpenoid produced from stevioside, which possesses anti‐inflammatory and antioxidative stress characteristics. nevertheless, it is still unclear how STV‐Na affects ALI. Therefore, we investigated the possible STV‐Na therapeutic impacts on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐induced (ALI). Methods We employed hematoxylin‐eosin staining to observe the impact of STV‐Na on lung histopathological alterations and used kits to detect the oxidative stress status of lung tissues, such as superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde, and glutathione. The reactive oxygen species and myeloperoxidase expression in the tissues of lung was assessed by immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry. Additionally, we detected the impact of STV‐Na on inflammatory cell infiltration in lung tissue using Wright‐Giemsa staining solution and immunohistochemistry, which was found to reduce inflammation in lung tissue by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Finally, using WB, we examined the impact of STV‐Na on the TLR4/NF‐kB pathway. Results We observed that STV‐Na attenuated lung histopathological alterations in LPS‐induced lung damage in mice, reduced infiltration of inflammatory cell and oxidative stress in the tissue of lung, and via the TLR4/NF‐kB pathway, there is a reduction in the inflammatory responses in mouse lung tissue. Conclusions These outcomes indicate that the response of inflammatory cells to LPS‐induced ALI in mice was attenuated by STV‐Na.

The transcription factor nuclear factor of kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) is expressed in brown adipocytes, but its role remains largely unknown in the cells. This issue was addressed in current study by examining NF-κB in brown adipocytes in vitro and in vivo. NF-κB activity was increased by differentiation of brown adipocytes through elevation of p65 (RelA) expression. The transcriptional activity of NF-κB was induced by the cold stimulation with an elevation in S276 phosphorylation of p65 protein. Inactivation of NF-κB in brown adipocytes made the knockout mice [uncoupling protein 1 (Ucp1)–CreER–p65f/f, U-p65-KO] intolerant to the cold environment. The brown adipocytes exhibited an increase in apoptosis, a decrease in cristae density and uncoupling activity in the interscapular brown adipose tissue (iBAT) of p65-KO mice. The alterations became severer after cold exposure of the KO mice. The brown adipocytes of mice with NF-κB activation (p65 overexpression, p65-OE) exhibited a set of opposite alterations with a reduction in apoptosis, an increase in cristae density and uncoupling activity. In mechanism, NF-κB inhibited expression of the adenine nucleotide translocase 2 (ANT2) in the control of apoptosis. Data suggest that NF-κB activity is increased in brown adipocytes by differentiation and cold stimulation to protect the cells from apoptosis through down-regulation of ANT2 expression.

In practical scenarios, there are always array errors, which would increase the sidelobe level (SLL) of the array and distort the performance of the electronic devices consequently. Nevertheless, most of the reported works do not take these unavoidable errors into consideration when implementing array beampattern synthesis. To remedy this problem, a low sidelobe beampattern synthesis approach is proposed in the presence of array errors based on the bat algorithm (BA). In particular, the covariance matrix of the sidelobe region in the presence of array errors is incorporated into the optimization problem. Generally, there are many factors that would contribute to array errors in practical scenarios. Therefore, to reduce the influence of the uncertainty characteristic of the errors on the low-SLL beampattern synthesis, the statistical mean method is utilized to obtain a robust calculation of the covariance matrix in the presence of array errors. Theoretical analysis using signal processing technique and electromagnetic simulation using Ansoft HFSS workbench are combined to testify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Numerical results show that peak SLLs (PSLLs) of around −22dB and −20dB can be respectively achieved in the above two simulation situations with the obtained weight vectors.

Human papilloma virus (HPV) is the most common reproductive tract virus. Most HPV infections occur during adolescence or young adulthood, and thus college students are one of the main target populations of HPV vaccination. However, data on knowledge of HPV and HPV vaccine as well as the intention to be vaccinated among Chinese college students were limited. The purpose of this study was to address this gap by investigating a sample of college students from four universities and analyzing the factors influencing their intention. College students (N = 343) filled in a survey comprised of demographic information, HPV and vaccine knowledge, and vaccination intention between September 2018 and January 2019. A descriptive statistical analysis was conducted to describe students’ HPV-related knowledge and vaccination intention. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the predictors of HPV vaccination intention. The participants had low levels of HPV and HPV vaccine-related knowledge, as well as modest intention to be vaccinated. Significant differences were identified in gender, years of study, and perceived susceptibility of HPV infection. Abstract The fundamental physical features such as the mechanical properties and microstructures of the uterus need to be considered when building in vitro culture platforms to mimic the uterus for embryo implantation and further development but have long been neglected. Here, a uterus‐inspired niche (UN) constructed by grafting collagen gels onto polydimethylsiloxane based on a systematic investigation of a series of parameters (varying concentrations and thicknesses of collagen gel) is established to intrinsically specify and simulate the mechanics and microstructures of the mouse uterus. This brand‐new and unique system is robust in supporting embryo invasion, as evidenced by the special interaction between the embryos and the UN system and successfully promoting E3.5 embryo development into the early organogenesis stage. This platform serves as a powerful tool for developmental biology and tissue engineering.

IF1 (ATPIF1) is a nuclear DNA-encoded mitochondrial protein whose activity is inhibition of the F1Fo-ATP synthase to control ATP production. IF1 activity remains unknown in the regulation of GLP-1 activity. In this study, IF1 was examined in the diet-induced obese mice using the gene knockout (If1-KO) mice. The mice gained more body weight on a high fat diet without a change in food intake. Insulin tolerance was impaired, but the oral glucose tolerance was improved through an increase in GLP-1 secretion. The KO mice exhibited an improved intestine structure, mitochondrial superstructure, enhanced mitophagy, reduced apoptosis and decreased adenine nucleotide translocase 2 (ANT2) protein in the intestinal epithelial cells together with preserved gut microbiota. The data suggest that GLP-1 secretion was enhanced in the obese If1-KO mice to preserve glucose tolerance through a signaling pathway of ANT2/mitochondria/L-cells/GLP-1/insulin. IF1 is a potential mitochondrial target for induction of GLP-1 secretion in L-cells.

Abstract In this paper, we use the inverse design method to design an optical interconnection system composed of wavelength demultiplexer and the same direction waveguide crossing on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. A 2.4 μm × 3.6 μm wavelength demultiplexer with an input wavelength of 1.3–1.6 μm is designed. When the target wavelength of the device is 1.4 μm, the insertion loss of the output port is − 0.93 dB, and there is − 18.4 dB crosstalk, in TE0 mode. The insertion loss of the target wavelength of 1.6 μm in TE0 mode is − 0.88 dB, and the crosstalk is − 19.1 dB. Then, we designed a same direction waveguide crossing, the footprint is only 2.4 μm × 3.6 μm, the insertion loss of the wavelength 1.4 μm and 1.6 μm in TE0 mode is − 0.99 dB and − 1 dB, and the crosstalk is − 12.14 dB and − 14.34 dB, respectively. Finally, an optical interconnect structure composed of two devices is used, which can become the most basic component of the optical interconnect network. In TE0 mode, the insertion loss of the output wavelength of 1.4 μm at the output port is − 1.3 dB, and the crosstalk is − 29.36 dB. The insertion loss of the output wavelength of 1.6 μm is − 1.39 dB, and the crosstalk is − 38.99 dB.

Unlike conventional phased array (PA), frequency diversity array (FDA) can perform the beampattern synthesis not only in an angle dimension but also in a range dimension by introducing an additional frequency offset (FO) across the array aperture, thus greatly enhancing the beamforming flexibility of an array antenna. Nevertheless, an FDA with uniform inter-element spacing that consists of a huge number of elements is required when a high resolution is needed, which results in a high cost. To substantially reduce the cost while almost maintaining the antenna resolution, it is important to conduct a sparse synthesis of FDA. Under these circumstances, this paper investigated the transmit–receive beamforming of a sparse-fda in range and angle dimensions. In particular, the joint transmit–receive signal formula was first derived and analyzed to resolve the inherent time-varying characteristics of FDA based on a cost-effective signal processing diagram. In the sequel, the GA-based low sidelobe level (SLL) transmit–receive beamforming of the sparse-fda was proposed to generate a focused main lobe in a range-angle space, where the array element positions were incorporated into the optimization problem. Numerical results showed that 50% of the elements can be saved for the two linear FDAs with sinusoidally and logarithmically varying frequency offsets, respectively termed as sin-FO linear-FDA and log-FO linear-FDA, with only a less than 1 dB increment in SLL. The resultant SLLs are below −9.6 dB, and −12.9 dB for these two linear FDAs, respectively.

With global warming, coastal areas are exposed to multiple climate-related hazards. Understanding the facts and attribution of regional climate change in coastal communities is a frontier science challenge. In this study, we focus on fact analysis of multi-scale climate changes in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay area (GBA) and around the Baltic Sea area (BSA). We selected three Asian stations from the GBA in South China (Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Macao) and five European stations around the Baltic Sea (Stockholm, Haparanda A, Vestervig, Poznan, and Frankfurt) from four countries in the BSA as representative stations, which have more than 100- or 150-year datasets. Based on the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and Mann–Kendall methods, this study focuses on the multi-scale temperature and precipitation fluctuation and mutation analysis in the past. The multi-scale analyses show that there are four time-scale changes in both areas. They are the inter-annual scale, inter-decadal scale, centennial scale, and trend, but the lengths of different timescales vary in both regions, especially the inter-decadal scale and centennial scale. For temperature, the inter-annual scales show the same results, with 2–4 and 7–9 a in both the GBA and BSA. In the GBA, the inter-decadal scales are 10–14, 30–50, and 55–99 a, while in the BSA, they are 13–20, 26–50, and 66–99 a. For centennial scales, there are 143–185 and 200–264 a in the BSA and about 100–135 a in the GBA. Temperature trends in the GBA reveal that the coastal area has experienced an upward trend (Hong Kong and Macao), but in the inland area (Guangzhou), the trend fluctuated. Temperature trends in the BSA have risen since 1756. For precipitation, the inter-annual scales are 2–4 and 6–9 a in both the GBA and BSA. The inter-decadal scales are 11–29 and 50–70 a in the GBA and 11–20, 33–50, and 67–86 a in the BSA. For centennial scales, there are about 100 a in the GBA and 100–136 a in the BSA. In the GBA, the precipitation trends show stronger local characteristics, with three different fluctuation types. In the BSA, most stations had a fluctuating trend except Haparanda A and Vestervig station, which experienced an upward trend throughout the whole time range. Overall, there are no unified trends for precipitation in both areas. Temperature mutation tests show that only Vestervig in the BSA changed abruptly in 1987, while the mutation point of Macao in the GBA was 1991. Precipitation mutation points of Stockholm and Vestervig were 1878 and 1918 in the BSA, while only Macao in the GBA changed abruptly in 1917. The results reveal that the regional climate mutation of both areas is not obvious, but the temperature changes with an upward trend as a whole.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play an important role in atmospheric chemistry. Primary VOCs take part in chemical and photochemical reactions, contributing to ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation, which may cause air pollution problems. High VOC concentrations might lead to dizziness, nausea, headaches, genotoxicity, reproductive weakness, and other diseases harmful to human health. Several studies have been performed to analyze the components, variations, or sources of VOCs at the ground level. In contrast, studies of the vertical distribution characteristics of VOCs are scarce, and the VOC potential for O3 formation in the boundary layer is not yet well understood. To better understand the VOC vertical variation regularities and related reasons in temporal and spatial dimensions, thus to deepen the understanding of their effects on O3 and SOA formation in the vertical direction and to identify the existing gaps in VOC vertical distributions, this study reviewed VOC sampling techniques, VOC vertical distribution characteristics, VOC diffusion models, and effects caused by VOCs. This work can be a valuable reference for decision making regarding environmental and health problems.

There are many unavoidable array errors in practical scenarios, which would drastically increase the sidelobe level (SLL) and distort the performance of radar systems accordingly. In this paper, an effective beampattern synthesis approach is proposed to realize a low peak sidelobe level (PSLL) and wide-nulling in the presence of array errors, thus improving the consequent performance of the radar. In particular, the covariance matrix of the sidelobe region (CMSR) is incorporated into the optimization. Considering the randomness of array errors, the statistical mean method is adopted to obtain a more accurate calculation of the CMSR in the presence of array errors based on a Monte Carlo trial. To efficiently and effectively solve the optimization problem, an advanced metaheuristic algorithm, i.e., the water cycle algorithm (WCA), is adopted when seeking the corresponding optimal weight vectors. Numerical results are provided and discussed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach including the results based on a wideband linearly spaced magneto-electric (ME) dipole array.

Dracaena cochinchinensis has special defensive reactions against wound stress. Under wound stress, D. cochinchinensis generates a resin that is an important medicine known as dragon’s blood. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the defensive reactions is unclear. Metabolomics and transcriptomics analyses were performed on stems of D. cochinchinensis at different timepoints from the short term to the long term after wounding. According to the 378 identified compounds, wound-induced secondary metabolic processes exhibited three-phase characteristics: short term (0–5 days), middle term (10 days–3 months), and long term (6–17 months). The wound-induced transcriptome profile exhibited characteristics of four stages: within 24 h, 1–5 days, 10–30 days, and long term. The metabolic regulation in response to wound stress mainly involved the TCA cycle, glycolysis, starch and sucrose metabolism, phenylalanine biosynthesis, and flavonoid biosynthesis, along with some signal transduction pathways, which were all well connected. Flavonoid biosynthesis and modification were the main reactions against wound stress, mainly comprising 109 flavonoid metabolites and 93 wound-induced genes. A group of 21 genes encoding CHS, CHI, DFR, PPO, OMT, LAR, GST, and MYBs were closely related to loureirin B and loureirin C. Wound-induced responses at the metabolome and transcriptome level exhibited phase characteristics. Complex responses containing primary metabolism and flavonoid biosynthesis are involved in the defense mechanism against wound stress in natural conditions, and flavonoid biosynthesis and modification are the main strategies of D. cochinchinensis in the long-term responses to wound stress.

Extracellular ADP, a derivative of ATP, interacts with the purinergic receptors in the cell membrane to regulate cellular activities. This signaling pathway remains unknown in the regulation of blood glucose in vivo. We investigated the acute activity of ADP in mice through a peritoneal injection. In the lean mice, in response to the ADP treatment, the blood glucose was elevated, and pyruvate tolerance was impaired. Hepatic gluconeogenesis was enhanced with elevated expression of glucogenic genes (G6pase and Pck1) in the liver. An elevation was observed in NADH, cAMP, AMP, GMP and citrate in the liver tissue in the targeted metabolomics assay. In the primary hepatocytes, ADP activated the cAMP/PKA/CREB signaling pathway, which was blocked by the antagonist (2211) of the ADP receptor P2Y13. In the circulation, gluconeogenic hormones including glucagon and corticosterone were elevated by ADP. Insulin and thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) were not altered in the blood. In the diet-induced obese (DIO) mice, NADH was elevated in the liver tissue to match the hepatic insulin resistance. Insulin resistance was intensified by ADP for further impairment in insulin tolerance. These data suggest that ADP induced the blood glucose through direct and indirect actions in liver. One of the potential pathways involves activation of the P2Y13/cAMP/PKA/CREB signaling pathway in hepatocytes and the indirect pathway may involve induction of the gluconeogenic hormones. NADH is a signal for gluconeogenesis in the liver of both DIO mice and lean mice.

Migraine is a chronic headache disease, which ranks second in years lost due to disability. However, the mechanism of migraines is still not clear. In migraine patients, fasting can trigger headache attacks. We explored the probable mechanism of why fasting can induce headaches. Nitroglycerin (NTG) was used to induce acute migraine attacks in mice. Primary astrocytes were used to study the pathophysiological mechanism and a Seahorse analyzer was used to detect mitochondrial function. NTG induced more serious headaches in the fasting group. Both the head-scratching times and climbing-cage times in the fasting group were higher than those in normal-diet group. More ROS and inflammatory factors, such as IL-6 and IL-1β, were induced in low-glucose conditions. Seahorse showed that the basal oxygen consumption rate (OCR) and OCR for ATP production were lower in mice who had received NTG with low glucose levels than in other groups. The activity of AMPK was inhibited in this group, which may explain the Seahorse results. We concluded that in the low-glucose state, astrocytes produce more inflammatory factors, ROS, which may be a result of mitochondrial metabolism dysfunction. Improving mitochondrial function and supplying enough substrates may be an option for relieving migraine attacks.

Nonoxidative dehydrogenation of isobutane is one of the sustainable strategies for producing high value added isobutene. As alternatives for the commercial Pt- and Cr-based dehydrogenation catalysts, supported V-based catalysts are worthy of study. In this work, a series of VOx/mMgAlO-R catalysts (m = 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30) were designed and prepared by loading VOx on mMgAlO composite oxide supports derived from mesoporous Al2O3-supported layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanocomposites. The calcined and reduced catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance (UV-Vis) spectra, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), Temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and low temperature N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms. The as-synthesized VOx/20MgAlO-R with appropriate Mg addition exhibits superior activity (43–56% conversion and 77–81% selectivity), excellent stability and coking-resistance for the isobutane dehydrogenation. The structure–performance relationship reveals that the formation of VOx species confined in the reconstructed LDH interlayer and porous MgO facilitates dispersing and stabilizing the VOx species. The low polymerization degree and higher proportion of V4+ ion for VOx species, strong acidity of medium acid sites and low concentration of strong acid sites are responsible for the excellent anti-coking and catalytic performance. The strong VOx–support interaction is beneficial for enhancing the stability of the catalysts.

The microstructure and impact toughness of the simulated heat affected zone (HAZ) of a high strength low alloy steels by laser-arc hybrid welding (LAHW) were investigated in this paper. Homogeneous simulated HAZ specimens with different grain sizes were prepared using the welding thermal simulating technique. Instrumented impact test was conducted to investigate the toughness of the simulated HAZ. Multi-scale sub-structure characterization of the simulated HAZ specimens was implemented by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD). The instrumented impact test found that the peak temperature T _M mainly affected the crack propagation process, the crack propagation energy E _p decreased as the increase of T _M , while the crack initiation energy E _i barely changed, the decrease of crack stable energy E _a led to the change of E _p . The multi-scale sub-structure characterization showed that the prior austenite grain size (PAGS), packet width, block width both increased with the rise of T _M . The block width was similar to the facet size in the crack unstable propagation zone of the simulated HAZ specimens. The block was the microstructure unit controlling the crack propagation process of the LAHW simulated HAZ specimens.

The heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) gene family perform a fundamental role in protecting plants against biotic and abiotic stresses. Aquilaria sinensis is a classic stress-induced medicinal plant, producing a valuable dark resin in a wood matrix, known as agarwood, in response to environmental stresses. The HSP70 gene family has been systematic identified in many plants, but there is no comprehensive analysis at the genomic level in A. sinensis. In this study, 15 putative HSP70 genes were identified in A. sinensis through genome-wide bioinformatics analysis. Based on their phylogenetic relationships, the 15 AsHSP70 were grouped into six sub-families that with the conserved motifs and gene structures, and the genes were mapped onto six separate linkage groups. A qRT-PCR analysis showed that the relative expression levels of all the AsHSP70 genes were up-regulated by heat stress. Subcellular localization of all HSP70s was predicted, and three were verified by transiently expressed in Arabidopsis protoplasts. Based on the expression profiles in different tissues and different layers treated with Agar-Wit, we predict AsHSP70 genes are involved in different stages of agarwood formation. The systematic identification and expression analysis of HSP70s gene family imply some of them may play important roles in the formation of agarwood. Our findings not only provide a foundation for further study their biological function in the later research in A. sinensis, but also provides a reference for the analysis of HSPs in other species.

The power splitter is a device that splits the energy from an input signal into multiple outputs with equal or uneven energy. Recently, the use of algorithms to intelligently design silicon-based photonic devices has attracted widespread attention. Thus, many optimization algorithms, which are called inverse design algorithms, have been proposed. In this paper, we use the Direct Binary Search (DBS) algorithm designed with three 1 × 3 power splitters with arbitrary directions theoretically. They have any direction and can be connected to other devices in any direction, which greatly reduces the space occupied by the optical integrated circuit. Through the simulation that comes about, we are able to get the insertion loss (IL) of the device we designed to be less than 5.55 dB, 5.49 dB, and 5.32 dB, separately. Then, the wavelength is 1530–1560 nm, so it can be used in the optical communication system. To discuss the impact of the footprint on device performance, we also designed another device with the same function as the second one from the above three devices. Its IL is less than 5.40 dB. Although it occupies a larger area, it has an advantage in IL. Through the design results, three 1 × 3 power splitters can be freely combined to realize any direction, multi-channel, ultra-compact power splitters, and can be better connected with different devices to achieve different functions. At the same time, we also show an example of a combination. The IL of each port of the combined 1 × 6 power splitter is less than 8.82 dB.

The electrochemical reduction of CO2 is a promising strategy to achieve efficient conversion and utilization. In this paper, a series of Zn catalysts were prepared by electrodeposition in different atmospheric conditions (N2, CO2, H2, CO). A fibrous Zn catalyst (Zn-CO2) exhibits high electrochemical activity and stability. The Zn-CO2 catalyst shows 73.0% faradaic efficiency of CO at −1.2 V vs. RHE and the selectivity of CO almost did not change over 6 h in −1.2 V vs. RHE. The excellent selectivity and stability is attributed to the novel fibrous morphology, which increases the electrochemical active surface area. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that Zn-CO2 catalyst has a higher proportion of Zn (101) crystal planes, which is considered to be conducive to the production of CO. The search further demonstrates the importance of morphology control for the preparation of highly active and stable catalysts.

Atherosclerosis is caused by chronic inflammation associated with the adhesion of neutrophils and endothelial cells (ECs) that is mediated by their respective cellular adhesive molecules to stiffened blood vessel walls. However, the stiffness dependence of calcium flux on neutrophils remains unclear yet. Here, the effect of substrate stiffness by ECs on neutrophils' calcium spike was quantified when the individual neutrophils that adhered to the human umbilical vascular endothelial cell (HUVEC) monolayer were pre-placed onto a stiffness-varied polyacrylamide substrate (5 or 34.88 kPa) or glass surface. Our data indicated that E-/P-selectins and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) on HUVECs and β2-integrins, P-selectin glycoprotein ligand 1 (PSGL-1), and CD44s on neutrophils were all involved in mediating neutrophil calcium spike in a stiffness-dependent manner, in which the increase in substrate stiffness enhanced the calcium intensity and the oscillation frequency (spike number). Such stiffness-dependent calcium response is associated with the induced selectin related to β2-integrin activation through the Syk/Src signaling pathway, and F-actin/myosin II are also involved in this. Moreover, tension-activated calcium ion channels displayed critical roles in initiating stiffness-dependent calcium spike. These results provide an insight into understanding how the stiffening of vascular walls could regulate the calcium flux of adhered neutrophils, and thus the immune responses in atherosclerosis.

In this paper, a metasurface Terahertz absorber based on the fractal technology of a graphene geometry resonator to realize ultra-wideband, ultrathin, adjustable double-layer cross-fractal formation is introduced. This paper proposes a dynamically tuned graphene absorbing material. The structure is composed of one- to four-level-fractal graphene pattern layers, MgF2 layers and metal reflective layers to form a two-sided mirror of an asymmetric Fabry–Perot cavity. To confine the terahertz electromagnetic wave, four different fractals are integrated into a supercell, and the coupling and superposition of adjacent resonant cavities form a broadband high-absorption absorber. Using finite element-based full-wave electromagnetic simulation software to simulate the response frequency of 0.4–2.0 THz, we found that the absorber achieves a broadband 1.26 THz range (absorption > 80%) and a relative bandwidth of 106.8%. By adjusting the Fermi energy, it can realize free switching and expand to wider broadband terahertz absorption, by adjusting the polarization angle (Φ) from 0 to 90° to prove that the structure is not sensitive to polarization, the absorber provides a 60° large angle of incidence, polarization for TE and TM the absorption pattern remains basically the same. Compared with the previous work, our proposed structure uses fractal technology to expand the bandwidth and provide dynamic adjustable characteristics with great degrees of freedom. The appearance of the fractal structure reduces the difficulty of actual processing.

Dalbergia odorifera, a critically endangered tree species, produces heartwood containing a vast variety of flavonoids. This heartwood, also known as Chinese rosewood, has high economic and medicinal value, but its formation takes several decades. In this study, we showed that discolored wood induced by pruning displays similar color, structure, and flavonoids content to those of natural heartwood, suggesting that wounding is an efficient method for inducing flavonoid production in D. odorifera. Transcriptome analysis was performed to investigate the mechanism underlying wounding-induced flavonoids production in D. odorifera heartwood. Wounding upregulated the expression of 90 unigenes, which covered 19 gene families of the phenylpropanoid and flavonoid pathways, including PAL, C4H, 4CL, CHS, CHI, 6DCS, F3’5’H, F3H, FMO, GT, PMAT, CHOMT, IFS, HI4’OMT, HID, IOMT, I2’H, IFR, and I3’H. Furthermore, 47 upregulated unigenes were mapped to the biosynthesis pathways for five signal molecules (ET, JA, ABA, ROS, and SA). Exogenous application of these signal molecules resulted in the accumulation of flavonoids in cell suspensions of D. odorifera, supporting their role in wounding-induced flavonoid production. Insights from this study will help develop new methods for rapidly inducing the formation of heartwood with enhanced medicinal value.

Aquilaria sinensis, a kind of typically wounding-induced medicinal plant with a great economical value, is widely used in the production of traditional Chinese medicine, perfume and incense. Coronatine-insensitive protein 1 (COI1) acts as a receptor in jasmonate (JA) signaling pathway, and regulates the expression of JA-responsive genes in plant defense. However, little is known about the COI1 gene in A. sinensis. Here, based on the transcriptome data, a full-length cDNA sequence of COI1 (termed as AsCOI1) was firstly cloned by RT–PCR and rapid-amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) strategies. AsCOI1 is 2330 bp in length (GenBank accession No. KM189194), and contains a complete open frame (ORF) of 1839 bp. The deduced protein was composed of 612 amino acids, with a predicted molecular weight of 68.93 kDa and an isoelectric point of 6.56, and was predicted to possess F-box and LRRs domains. Combining bioinformatics prediction with subcellular localization experiment analysis, AsCOI1 was appeared to locate in nucleus. AsCOI1 gene was highly expressed in roots and stems, the major organs of agarwood formation. Methyl jasmonate (MeJA), mechanical wounding and heat stress could significantly induce the expression level of AsCOI1 gene. AsCOI1 is an early wound-responsive gene, and it likely plays some role in agarwood formation.

Using response surface method to determine the optimal technological conditions of biomass-based precursor preparation, magnetic Fe3O4 particles were loaded on the surface and internal channel of biomass-based precursor to prepare a magnetic biomass-based solid acid catalyst using the sol-gel method. To investigate the performance of the magnetic catalyst, it was used to hydrolyze cellulose into reducing sugar, whose structure was characterized by infrared spectrum analysis. The optimum process conditions of biomass-based precursor preparation was obtained by quadratic regression model as a carbonization temperature of 549 °C, carbonization time of 13 h, sulfonating temperature of 121 °C, and sulfonating time of 6 h. Using the biomass-based solid acid catalyst to hydrolyze cellulose, a reducing sugar yield of 57.36% was obtained. Compared with the traditional solid acid catalysts, the total reducing sugar yield was increased by 65%. The infrared spectrum analysis showed that magnetic Fe3O4 particles were combined successfully with biomass-based precursor. This magnetic biomass-based solid acid catalyst has a carbon structure layer of vermicular disorder and possesses high stability.

As widely recognized, agarwood formation in Aquilaria trees is induced by external wounding. Because agarwood usually harbors specific microbes, the function of microbes in agarwood formation has been debated for almost a century. In this study, two wounding methods, the burning-chisel-drilling method (BCD) and the whole-tree agarwood-inducing method (Agar-Wit), were used under the non-contamination of environmental microorganisms. After pyrosequencing the small rRNA subunits of the wounds induced by the BCD and Agar-Wit, no substantial variation was observed either in fungal and bacterial enrichment and diversity or in the relative abundances of taxa. By contrast, significant variations in fungal and bacterial communities were detected following the partial tree pruning (PTP)-wounding. The wound-induced sesquiterpene biosynthesis and vessel-occlusion formation, however, were found to be similar in all types of wounded trunks. We thus infer that wounding in the absence of variations in microbial communities may induce agarwood formation. This result does not support the long-standing notion that agarwood formation depends on microbes.
