We reported a systematic study of spin-orbit torque biased magnetic sensors based on NiFe/Pt bilayers through both macro-spin modeling and experiments. The simulation results show that it is possible to achieve a linear sensor with a dynamic range of 0.1-10 Oe, power consumption of 1 μW-1mW, and sensitivity of 0.1-0.5 Ω/Oe. These characteristics can be controlled by varying the sensor dimension and current density in the Pt layer. The latter is in the range of 1 × 105-107 A/cm². Experimental results of fabricated sensors with selected sizes agree well with the simulation results. For a Wheatstone bridge sensor comprising of four sensing elements, a sensitivity up to 0.548 Ω/Oe, linearity error below 6%, and detectivity of about 2.8 nT/vHz were obtained. The simple structure and ultrathin thickness greatly facilitate the integration of these sensors for on-chip applications. Background: Renal cell carcinoma most commonly metastasizes to the lungs, skeleton or liver. Metastatic renal cell carcinoma to the breast is very rare, especially for clear cell carcinoma, and few cases regarding this condition have been reported. Case Presentation: The case we presented was a 68-year-old Chinese female with metastatic renal clear cell carcinoma of the left breast 10 years after a nephrectomy. Identification of the metastatic renal clear cell carcinoma in the breast required multiple breast imaging modalities. Imaging showed a single, ovary-shaped, well-defined hypo-echoic mass, with abundant blood flow on ultrasound images. The mass was enhanced early on MRI, and it was hypointense on a T1-weighted image and hyperintense on a fat-saturated T2-weighted image. Following surgical excision of the tumor, a routine immunohistochemistry antibody panel on the tumor cells revealed negative staining for estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (Her-2). Strong positive staining for the cluster of differentiation 10 (CD10) and vimentin was present. Conclusion: This case is unusual because of the site of metastatic progression. We demonstrate an ultrathin and semitransparent anisotropic and spin Hall magnetoresistance sensor based on NiFe/Pt heterostructures. The use of a spin-orbit torque effective field for transverse biasing allows us to reduce the total thickness of the sensors down to 3–4 nm, thereby leading to the semitransparency. Despite the extremely simple design, the spin-orbit torque effective field biased NiFe/Pt sensor exhibits levels of linearity and sensitivity comparable to those of sensors using more complex linearization schemes. In a proof-of-concept design using a full Wheatstone bridge comprising four sensing elements, we obtained a sensitivity up to 202.9 mΩ Oe-1, a linearity error below 5%, and a detection limit down to 20 nT. BioM2MetDisease is a manually curated database that aims to provide a comprehensive and experimentally supported resource of associations between metabolic diseases and various biomolecules. Recently, metabolic diseases such as diabetes have become one of the leading threats to people’s health. Metabolic disease associated with alterations of multiple types of biomolecules such as miRNAs and metabolites. An integrated and high-quality data source that collection of metabolic disease associated biomolecules is essential for exploring the underlying molecular mechanisms and discovering novel therapeutics. Here, we developed the BioM2MetDisease database, which currently documents 2681 entries of relationships between 1147 biomolecules (miRNAs, metabolites and small molecules/drugs) and 78 metabolic diseases across 14 species. Each entry includes biomolecule category, species, biomolecule name, disease name, dysregulation pattern, experimental technique, a brief description of metabolic disease-biomolecule relationships, the reference, additional annotation information etc. BioM2MetDisease provides a user-friendly interface to explore and retrieve all data conveniently. A submission page was also offered for researchers to submit new associations between biomolecules and metabolic diseases. BioM2MetDisease provides a comprehensive resource for studying biology molecules act in metabolic diseases, and it is helpful for understanding the molecular mechanisms and developing novel therapeutics for metabolic diseases. We investigated spin Hall magnetoresistance in FeMn/Pt bilayers, which was found to be one order of magnitude larger than that of heavy metal and insulating ferromagnet or antiferromagnet bilayer systems, and comparable to that of NiFe/Pt bilayers. The spin Hall magnetoresistance shows a non-monotonic dependence on the thicknesses of both FeMn and Pt. The former can be accounted for by the thickness dependence of net magnetization in FeMn thin films, whereas the latter is mainly due to spin accumulation and diffusion in Pt. Through analysis of the Pt thickness dependence, the spin Hall angle, spin diffusion length of Pt and the real part of spin mixing conductance were determined to be 0.2, 1.1 nm, and 5.5 × 1014 Ω-1m-2, respectively. In the central auditory system, cartwheel cells (CWCs) are a group of interneurons in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN). While other DCN neurons respond to stimuli with a simple discharge pattern of single action potentials (SAPs), CWCs respond with complex action potentials (CAPs), consisting of SAPs superimposed on a slow depolarization. The CAPs in CWCs may participate in various auditory or non-auditory signaling processing but its intrinsic mechanisms are largely unknown. In the present study, in vitro whole-cell current clamp recordings on neonatal mice brain slices were used to demonstrate that CWCs respond to brief voltage stimulation with CAPs. Western blotting and immunohistochemistry were also utilized to demonstrate that Nav1.9 was expressed in the CWCs. Finally, when Nav1.9 was genetically silenced, CWCs responded to voltage stimulation with SAPs, not CAPs. Emerging evidence suggests that altered expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) is involved in cancer progression. However, the role of miR-125a-5p in gastric carcinogenesis remains unknown. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis revealed that the expression of miR-125a-5p was significantly decreased in >80% of gastric cancer tissues compared with their adjacent non-tumor tissues, and was markedly reduced in ~95% of intestinal-type gastric cancer tissues. The downregulated miR-125a-5p was significantly associated with gastric cancer metastasis. Ectopic expression of miR-125a-5p substantially inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion activities of gastric cancer cells. Furthermore, forced expression of miR-125a-5p repressed the activity of a luciferase reporter carrying the 3'-untranslated (3'-UTR) region of E2F3, which was eliminated by mutation of the predicted miR-125a-binding site, indicating that E2F3 may be a potential target gene of miR-125a-5p. Abstract: In this paper, hollow hematite nano-polyhedrons (Fe-HNPs) were synthesized via a facile solution route. The abundance of high indexed facets was demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. A new electrochemical biosensor for nitrite determination was then proposed by using the hematite hollow nanopolyhedron as the sensing layer. Electrochemical tests showed that the Fe-HNPs could act as efficient enzyme-like electron mediators for nitrite oxidation. As a result, the Fe2O3 modified biosensor exhibited excellent performance for the determination of nitrite with a response time of <10s, linear range between 0.009 and 3mM, and sensitivity as 19.83μAmM−1. A high selectivity and long-term stability toward nitrite oxidation in the presence of glucose and l-ascorbic (AA) was also observed at their maximum physiological concentrations, which made this novel Fe2O3 nanomaterial bounded with high indexed facets promising for sensing applications in medicine, biotechnology and environmental chemistry. Abstract: In this paper, hierarchically structured NiO nanoflowers were facile synthesized by incorporating a convenient solution process with a subsequent thermal treating process. Their catalytic activity was then electrochemically investigated in detail. The NiO nanoflower modified biosensor exhibits excellent sensing performance for the determination of l-ascorbic acid with a response time less than 8s, linear range between 0.005 and 3.5mM, and sensitivity as 220.4μAmM−1 cm−2. Besides, a high selectivity towards the oxidation of AA in the presence of dopamine (DA) and nitrite was also observed at their maximum physiological concentrations. The good analytical performance, long-term stability, low cost and straightforward fabrication process made the NiO nanomaterials promising for the development of effective electrochemical sensors for a wide range of potential applications in medicine, biotechnology and environmental chemistry. Human microRNA-141 (miR-141), a member of the miR-200 family, has been reported to be associated with various human malignancies. However, it remains unknown whether miR-141 is involved in the pathogenesis of gastric cancer. Therefore, we examined the expression of miR-141 in gastric cancer tissues and the effect of miR-141 overexpression on cancer cell proliferation. The expression level of miR-141 in 35 pair-matched gastric neoplastic and adjacent non-neoplastic tissues, and in 5 gastric cancer cell lines were examined by quantitative real-time PCR. The growth of MGC-803 cells transfected with miRNA precursor was examined by MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazoliumbromide) assay. MiR-141 was significantly down-regulated in 80% (28/35) of primary gastric cancer tissues compared with pair-matched adjacent non-tumor tissues ( P < 0.01). The expression of miR-141 was also found to be substantially reduced in several human gastric cancer cell lines such as MGC-803, HGC-27, SGC-7901 and BGC-823 cells. Overexpression of miR-141 with its precursors significantly inhibited the proliferation of gastric cancer cells. The article presents the study which uses gas chromatography/mass spectrometry for the simultaneous determination of 28 various types of pesticides in soybean oil. Using the method, the researchers obtained acceptable recoveries of pesticides at fortification levels of 0.02, 0.05, 0.2 and 1 milligram/kilogram. The researchers concluded that the method is easy, efficient and fast with no need of special equipment.

A method based on matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) and liquid chromatography–electrospay ionization–mass spectrometry used to analyze fifteen fungicide residues in fruits and vegetables is described. The method required only 0.5 g of sample, C18-bonded silica was used as dispersant sorbent, and ethyl acetate was used as eluting solvent. Fortified recoveries in apple, orange, banana, lettuce, grape and tomato samples ranged from 71% to 102% and relative standard deviations were less than 13% with fortified levels of 0.03–1.5 mg kg−1. Detection and quantification limits were 1~30 μg kg−1 and 4~100 μg kg−1, respectively, with linear calibration curves extending up to 15 mg kg−1. The analytical characteristics of MSPD compared very favorably with those found for a classical multiresidue method: the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method. The method was applied to determine the fungicides in real samples. Liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS–MS) was used as confirmatory tool for positive samples. Recently, we have demonstrated the presence of spin-orbit torque in FeMn/Pt multilayers which, in combination with the anisotropy field, is able to rotate its magnetization consecutively from 0° to 360° without any external field. Here, we report on an investigation of the static and dynamic magnetic properties of FeMn/Pt multilayers using the combined techniques of magnetometry, ferromagnetic resonance, inverse spin Hall effect, and spin Hall magnetoresistance measurements. The FeMn/Pt multilayer was found to exhibit ferromagnetic properties, and its temperature dependence of saturation magnetization can be fitted well using a phenomenological model by including a finite distribution in Curie temperature due to subtle thickness variations across the multilayer samples. The non-uniformity in static magnetic properties is also manifested in the ferromagnetic resonance spectra, which typically exhibit a broad resonance peak. A damping parameter of around 0.106 is derived from the frequency dependence of ferromagnetic resonance linewidth, which is comparable to the reported values for other types of Pt-based multilayers. Clear inverse spin Hall signals and spin Hall magnetoresistance have been observed in all samples below the Curie temperature, which corroborate the strong spin-orbit torque effect observed previously. We present results from the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array observations of the new black hole X-ray binary candidate MAXI J1631–479 at two epochs during its 2018–2019 outburst, which caught the source in a disk dominant state and a power-law dominant state. Strong relativistic disk reflection features are clearly detected, displaying significant variations in the shape and strength of the broad iron emission line between the two states. Spectral modeling of the reflection spectra reveals that the inner radius of the optically thick accretion disk evolves from <1.9 to 12 ± 1 rg (statistical errors at 90% confidence level) from the disk dominant to the power-law dominant state. Assuming in the former case that the inner disk radius is consistent with being at the innermost stable circular orbit, we estimate a black hole spin of a* > 0.94. Given that the bolometric luminosity is similar in the two states, our results indicate that the disk truncation observed in MAXI J1631–479 in the power-law dominant state is unlikely to be driven by a global variation in the accretion rate. We propose that it may instead arise from local instabilities in the inner edge of the accretion disk at high accretion rates. In addition, we find an absorption feature in the spectra centered at 7.33 ± 0.03 keV during the disk dominant state, which is evidence for the rare case that an extremely fast disk wind () is observed in a low-inclination black hole binary, with the viewing angle of 29° ± 1° as determined by the reflection modeling. We present results from NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations of the new black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 at low accretion rates (below 1% of the Eddington luminosity). We detect a narrow Fe Kα emission line, in contrast to the broad and asymmetric Fe Kα line profiles commonly present in black hole binaries at high accretion rates. The narrow line, with weak relativistic broadening, indicates that the Fe Kα line is produced at a large disk radius. Fitting with disk reflection models assuming standard disk emissivity finds a large disk truncation radius (a few tens to a few hundreds of gravitational radii, depending on the disk inclination). In addition, we detect a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) varying in frequency between 11.6 ± 0.2 mHz and 2.8 ± 0.1 mHz. The very low QPO frequencies suggest a large size for the optically thin Comptonization region according to the Lense–Thirring precession model, supporting that the accretion disk recedes from the innermost stable circular orbit and is replaced by advection-dominated accretion flow at low accretion rates. We also discuss the possibility of an alternative accretion geometry that the narrow Fe Kα line is produced by a lamppost corona with a large height illuminating the disk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermoelectric materials can realize direct and mutual conversion between electricity and heat. However, developing a strategy to improve high thermoelectric performance is challenging because of strongly entangled electrical and thermal transport properties. We demonstrate a case in which both pseudo-nanostructures of vacancy clusters and dynamic charge-carrier regulation of trapped-hole release have been achieved in p-type lead telluride-based materials, enabling the simultaneous regulations of phonon and charge carrier transports. We realized a peak zT value up to 2.8 at 850 kelvin and an average zT value of 1.65 at 300 to 850 kelvin. We also achieved an energy conversion efficiency of ~15.5% at a temperature difference of 554 kelvin in a segmented module. We report results from joint Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, Swift, and XMM-Newton observations of the newly discovered black hole X-ray binary candidate Swift J1658.2–4242 in the intermediate state. We observe a peculiar event in this source, with its X-ray flux rapidly decreasing by ∼45% in ∼40 s, accompanied by only subtle changes in the shape of the broadband X-ray spectrum. In addition, we find a sudden turn-on of a transient quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) with a frequency of 6–7 Hz around the time of the flux change, and the total fractional rms amplitude of the power spectrum increases from ∼2% to ∼10%. The X-ray spectral and timing analyses indicate that the flux decrease is driven by intrinsic changes in the accretion flow around the black hole, rather than intervening material along the line of sight. In addition, we do not significantly detect any relativistic disk reflection component, indicating it is much weaker than previously observed while the source was in the bright hard state. We propose accretion disk instabilities triggered at a large disk radius as the origin of the fast transition in spectral and timing properties, and discuss possible causes of the unusual properties observed in Swift J1658.2–4242. We present a spectral and timing analysis of the newly reported Galactic X-ray transient Swift J1658.2–4242 observed by Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and Swift. The broadband X-ray continuum is typical of a black hole binary in the bright hard state, with a photon index of Γ = 1.63 ± 0.02 and a low coronal temperature of kTe = 22 ± 1 keV, corresponding to a low spectral cutoff well constrained by NuSTAR. Spectral modeling of the relativistic disk reflection features, consisting of a broad Fe Kα line and the Compton reflection hump, reveals that the black hole is rapidly spinning with the spin parameter of a* > 0.96, and the inner accretion disk is viewed at a high inclination angle of (statistical errors, 90% confidence). The high inclination is independently confirmed by dips in the light curves, which can be explained by absorbing material located near the disk plane temporarily obscuring the central region. In addition, we detect an absorption line in the NuSTAR spectra centered at keV. If associated with ionized Fe K absorption lines, this provides evidence for the presence of outflowing material in the low/hard state of a black hole binary candidate. A timing analysis shows the presence of a type-C quasi-periodic oscillation in the power spectrum, with the frequency increasing from ∼0.14 to ∼0.21 Hz during the single NuSTAR exposure. Our analysis reveals that Swift J1658.2–4242 displays characteristics typical for a black hole binary that is viewed at a high inclination angle, making it a good system for studying the accretion geometry in black hole binaries. We present a spectral and timing study of the NuSTAR and Swift observations of the black hole candidate IGR J17091–3624 in the hard state during its outburst in 2016. Disk reflection is detected in each of the NuSTAR spectra taken in three epochs. Fitting with relativistic reflection models reveals that the accretion disk is truncated during all epochs with , with the data favoring a low disk inclination of ∼30°–40°. The steepening of the continuum spectra between epochs is accompanied by a decrease in the high energy cutoff: the electron temperature drops from ∼64 to ∼26 keV, changing systematically with the source flux. We detect type-C QPOs in the power spectra with frequency varying between 0.131 and 0.327 Hz. In addition, a secondary peak is found in the power spectra centered at about 2.3 times the QPO frequency during all three epochs. The nature of this secondary frequency is uncertain; however, a non-harmonic origin is favored. Aim: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of real-time elastography as a method for detecting prostate cancer.Material and Methods: Relevant studies applying real-time elastography as the diagnostic modality and biopsy as the reference standard, published by March 1, 2018 were retrieved from PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases. Two independent reviewers inspected all these articles to confirm the matching of the inclusion criteria. One reviewer with methodological expertise extracted the data from the included studies. Sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) were used to obtain overall estimates. Randomized effect method, meta-regression and subgroup analysis were performed.Results: Twenty-four studies out of 1156 identified articles met the inclusion criteria. Three groups were set: analysisby patient (Group 1), by core (Group 2), and by image (Group 3) and subgroups set in Group 1. The pooled estimate ofreal-time elastography sensitivity/ specificity/ DOR calculated with the identical P-value 0.00. Within subgroups "Asia" and"PSA>=10 ng/ml", the pooled sensitivity, specificity and DOR were 0.83, 0.65 (p=0.01, I2=73.40%; p=0.02, I2=69.5%), 0.80, 0.82 (p=0.66, I2=0.00%; p=0.58, I2=0.00%) and 20.2, 8.67 (p=0.09, I2=54.2%; p=0.20, I2=35.5%), respectively. In these three groups, the areas under the SROC curve were 0.7417, 0.9246, and 0.6213 independently.Conclusions: Real-time elastography is a promising, reliable modality for the non-invasive diagnosis of patients with prostate cancer. The diagnostic accuracy of real-time elastography correlates tightly to the presence of higher PSA level and may help avoid unnecessary biopsy. It seems to be a useful tool in systemic biopsy. We present a spectral analysis of the NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations of the Seyfert 1h galaxy/ULIRG IRAS 05189–2524 taken in 2013. We find evidence for relativistic disk reflection in the broadband X-ray spectrum: a highly asymmetric broad Fe Kα emission line extending down to 3 keV and a Compton scattering component above 10 keV. Physical modeling with a self-consistent disk reflection model suggests that the accretion disk is viewed at an intermediate angle with a supersolar iron abundance, and a mild constraint can be put on the high-energy cutoff of the power-law continuum. We test the disk reflection modeling under different absorption scenarios. A rapid black hole spin is favored; however, we cannot place a model-independent tight constraint on the value. The high reflection fraction ( 2.0–3.2) suggests that the coronal illuminating source is compact and close to the black hole (lying within 8.7 above the central black hole), where light-bending effects are important. Fieldlike spin-orbit torque in FeMn/Pt bilayers with ultrathin polycrystalline FeMn has been characterized through planar Hall effect measurements. A large effective field of 2.05?10-5 to 2.44?10-5Oe(A-1cm2) is obtained for FeMn in the thickness range of 2-5 nm. The experimental observations can be reasonably accounted for by using a macrospin model under the assumption that the FeMn layer is composed of two spin sublattices with unequal magnetizations. The large effective field corroborates the spin Hall origin of the effective field, considering the much smaller uncompensated net moments in FeMn as compared to NiFe. The effective absorption of spin current by FeMn is further confirmed by the fact that spin current generated by Pt in NiFe/FeMn/Pt trilayers can only travel through the FeMn layer with a thickness of 1-4 nm. By quantifying the fieldlike effective field induced in NiFe, a spin diffusion length of 2 nm is estimated in FeMn, consistent with values reported in the literature by ferromagnetic resonance and spin-pumping experiments. Background: As the most populous nation in the world, China has now becoming an emerging ageing society. Shanghai is the first city facing the challenge of ageing demographics. Against this background, a study that employs self-rated health (SRH) assessment system was designed to explore the health status of Shanghai elders, and learn their attitudes toward health issues; as well as to investigate the determinants of SRH among Shanghai elders. Understanding SRH is crucial for finding appropriate solutions that could effectively tackle the increasing eldercare demand.Methods: This study adopted a quantitative research strategy. Using a multistage stratified cluster sampling method, we conducted a questionnaire survey in August 2011 in Shanghai, which collected 2001 valid survey responses. SRH assessments were categorized by five levels: very good, fairly good, average, fairly poor, or poor. The respondents' functional status was evaluated using the Barthel index of activities for daily living. In the data analysis, we used chi-squared test to determine differences in socio-demographic characteristics among various groups. Along with statistics, several logistic regression models were designed to determine the associations between internal influence factors and SRH.Results: Younger age (χ2 = 27.5, p < 0.05), male sex (χ2 = 11.5, p < 0.1), and living in the suburbs (χ2 = 55.1, p < 0.05) were associated with better SRH scores. Higher SRH scores were also linked with health behaviour of the respondents; namely, do not smoke (χ2 = 18.0, p < 0.1), do not drink (χ2 = 18.6, p < 0.1), or engage in regular outdoor activities (χ2 = 69.3, p < 0.05). The respondents with better social support report higher SRH scores than those without. Respondents' ability to hear (χ2 = 38.7, p < 0.05), speak (χ2 = 16.1, p < 0.05) and see (χ2 = 78.3, p < 0.05) impacted their SRH scores as well. Meanwhile, chronic illness except asthma was a major influence factor in low SRH score. Applying multiple regression models, a series of determinants were analysed to establish the extent to which they contribute to SRH. The impact of these variables on SRH scores were 6.6% from socio-demographic and health risk behaviours, 2.4% from social support, 8.5% from mental health, 20% from physical conditions, and13% from chronic diseases.Conclusions: This is the first study that examines the determinants of SRH among Shanghai elders. Nearly 40% of our study's respondents reported their health status as "good". Understanding the regulatory mechanisms of PD-L1 expression in tumors provides key clues for improving immune checkpoint blockade efficacy or developing novel oncoimmunotherapy. Here, we showed that the FDA-approved sodiumglucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor canagliflozin dramatically suppressed PD-L1 expression and enhanced T cell-mediated cytotoxicity. Mechanistic study revealed that SGLT2 colocalized with PD-L1 at the plasma membrane and recycling endosomes and thereby prevented PD-L1 from proteasome-mediated degradation. Canagliflozin disturbed the physical interaction between SGLT2 and PD-L1 and subsequently allowed the recognition of PD-L1 by Cullin3SPOP E3 ligase, which triggered the ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation of PD-L1. In mouse models and humanized immunetransformation models, either canagliflozin treatment or SGLT2 silencing significantly reduced PD-L1 expression and limited tumor progression -- to a level equal to the PD-1 mAb -- which was correlated with an increase in the activity of antitumor cytotoxic T cells. Notably, prolonged progression-free survival and overall survival curves were observed in the group of PD-1 mAb-treated patients with non-small cell lung cancer with high expression of SGLT2. Therefore, our study identifies a regulator of cell surface PD-L1, provides a ready-to-use small-molecule drug for PD-L1 degradation, and highlights a potential therapeutic target to overcome immune evasion by tumor cells. Objective: The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of cigarette smoking on brain regional function in a group of chronic smokers by using cerebral blood flow (CBF) measures and positron emission tomography (PET). Method: Nineteen tobacco smokers were studied after about 12 hours of smoking abstinence. Regional CBF (rCBF) measures were obtained with PET and [15O]H2O in six consecutive scans. Two average-nicotine-yield (1.0 mg) and one denicotinized (0.08 mg) research cigarettes with similar tar yields (9.5 mg and 9.1 mg, respectively) were smoked in a double-blind design, preceded and followed by baseline scans. The rCBF effects of smoking were compared to baseline measures and between cigarettes, as well as to subjective ratings of craving for cigarettes. Results: Smoking the first cigarette of the day resulted in increases in rCBF in the visual cortex and the cerebellum and reductions in the anterior cingulate, the right hippocampus, and the ventral striatum, including the nucleus accumbens. Cigarette craving scores correlated with rCBF changes in the dorsal anterior cingulate and right hippocampus. Less pronounced effects were observed with the second cigarette and the denicotinized cigarette. Conclusions: Smoking affects rCBF not only in areas of the brain rich in nicotinic cholinergic receptors but also in areas implicated in the rewarding effects of drugs of abuse. Furthermore, craving for a cigarette in chronic smokers was correlated with rCBF in the right hippocampus, an area involved in associating environmental cues with drugs, and in the left dorsal anterior cingulate, an area implicated in drug craving and relapse to drug-seeking behavior. We report on the observation of stable electrical oscillation in Pt/vanadium dioxide (VO2) bilayer strips, in which the Pt overlayer serves the dual purposes of heating up the VO2 and weakening the electric field in the VO2 layer. Systematic measurements in an ultrahigh vacuum nanoprobe system show that the oscillation frequency increases with the bias current and/or with decreasing device dimension. In contrast to most VO2-based oscillators reported to date, which are electrically triggered, current-induced Joule heating in the Pt overlayer is found to play a dominant role in the generation of oscillation in Pt/VO2 bilayers. A simple model involving thermally triggered transition of VO2 on a heat sink is able to account for the experimental observations. Objective: Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models have shown great promise in preclinical and translational applications, but their consistency with primary tumors in phenotypic, genetic, and pharmacodynamic heterogeneity has not been well-studied. This study aimed to establish a PDX repository for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and to further elucidate whether it could preserve the heterogeneity within and between tumors in patients. Methods: A total of 75 surgically resected NSCLC specimens were implanted into immunodeficient NOD/SCID mice. Based on the successful establishment of the NSCLC PDX model, we compared the expressions of vimentin, Ki67, EGFR, and PD-L1 proteins between cancer tissues and PDX models using hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistochemical staining. In addition, we detected whole gene expression profiling between primary tumors and PDX generations. We also performed whole exome sequencing (WES) analysis in 17 first generation xenografts to further assess whether PDXs retained the patient heterogeneities. Finally, paclitaxel, cisplatin, doxorubicin, atezolizumab, afatininb, and AZD4547 were used to evaluate the responses of PDX models to the standard-of-care agents. Results: A large collection of serially transplantable PDX models for NSCLC were successfully developed. The histology and pathological immunohistochemistry of PDX xenografts were consistent with the patients' tumor samples. WES and RNA-seq further confirmed that PDX accurately replicated the molecular heterogeneities of primary tumors. Similar to clinical patients, PDX models responded differentially to the standard-of-care treatment, including chemo-, targeted- and immuno-therapeutics. Conclusions: Our established PDX models of NSCLC faithfully reproduced the molecular, histopathological, and therapeutic characteristics, as well as the corresponding tumor heterogeneities, which provides a clinically relevant platform for drug screening, biomarker discovery, and translational research. Carotenoid cleavage dioxygenases (CCDs) drive carotenoid catabolism to produce various apocarotenoids and immediate derivatives with particular developmental, ecological, and agricultural importance. How CCD genes evolved with species diversification and the resulting functional novelties in cereal crops have remained largely elusive. We constructed a unified four-clade phylogenetic tree of CCDs, revealing a previously unanchored basal clade CCD10. CCD10 underwent highly dynamic duplication or loss events, even in the grass family. Different from cleavage sites of CCD8 and ZAXINONE SYNTHASE (ZAS), maize (Zea mays) ZmCCD10a cleaved differentially structured carotenoids at 5, 6 (5′, 6') and 9, 10 (9', 10') positions, generating C8 (6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one) and C13 (geranylacetone, α-ionone, and β-ionone) apocarotenoids in Escherichia coli. Localized in plastids, ZmCCD10a cleaved neoxanthin, violaxanthin, antheraxathin, lutein, zeaxanthin, and β-carotene in planta, corroborating functional divergence of ZmCCD10a and ZAS. ZmCCD10a expression was dramatically stimulated in maize and teosinte (Z. mays ssp. parviglumis, Z. mays ssp. huehuetenangensis, Zea luxurians, and Zea diploperennis) roots by phosphate (Pi) limitation. ZmCCD10a silencing favored phosphorus retention in the root and reduced phosphorus and biomass accumulation in the shoot under low Pi. Overexpression of ZmCCD10a in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) enhanced plant tolerance to Pi limitation by preferential phosphorus allocation to the shoot. Thus, ZmCCD10a encodes a unique CCD facilitating plant tolerance to Pi limitation. Additionally, ZmCCD10a silencing and overexpression led to coherent alterations in expression of PHOSPHATE STARVATION RESPONSE REGULATOR 1 (PHR1) and Pi transporters, and cis-regulation of ZmCCD10a expression by ZmPHR1;1 and ZmPHR1;2 implies a probable ZmCCD10a-involved regulatory pathway that adjusts Pi allocation. The clinical efficacy and safety of different combinations of non-bio artificial liver in the treatment of acute liver failure was examined. A total of 61 cases were selected under blood purification treatment from the patients with severe acute liver failure admitted to the severe disease department of the hospital from December, 2010 to December, 2015. Three types of artificial liver combinations were observed, i.e., plasma exchange plus hemoperfusion plus continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration (PE+HP+CVVHDF), PE+CVVHDF and HP+CVVHDF. The heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), respiratory index (PaO2/FiO2), liver and kidney function indicator, as well as platelet and coagulation function were compared. A comparison before and after the treatment using the three methods, showed improvement in the HRs, MAPs, PaO2/FiO2, total bilirubins (TBIL) and alanine aminotransferases (ALT) (P<0.05), of which TBIL and ALT were decreased more significantly (P<0.01) in the PE+CVVHDF and PE+HP+CVVHDF groups. Only changes in the PE+HP+CVVHDF and PE+CVVHDF groups were statistically significant after prothrombin time and albumin treatment (P<0.05). The difference between the decrease in TBIL in the PE+HP+CVVHDF group and that in the HP+CVVHDF group was statistically significant (P<0.05). Treatment of the 61 patients using the artificial liver support system yielded a survival rate of 62.3% (38/61), and a viral survival rate of 35.0% (7/20); with the non-viral survival rate being 75.6% (31/41). In conclusion, following the treatment of three types of artificial livers, the function was improved to varying degrees, with the PE+HP+CVVHDF and the PE+CVVHDF method being better. Background aims. Exosomes, a key component of cell paracrine secretion, can exert protective effects in various disease models. However, application of exosomes in vascular repair and regeneration has rarely been reported. In this study, we tested whether endothelial progenitor cell (EPC)-derived exosomes possessed therapeutic effects in rat models of balloon-induced vascular injury by accelerating reendothelialization. Methods. Exosomes were obtained from the conditioned media of EPCs isolated from human umbilical cord blood. Induction of the endothelial injury was performed in the rats' carotid artery, and the pro-re-endothelialization capacity of EPC-derived exosomes was measured. The in vitro effects of exosomes on the proliferation and migration of endothelial cells were investigated. Results. We found that the EPC-derived exosomes accelerated the re-endothelialization in the early phase after endothelial damage in the rat carotid artery. We also demonstrated that these exosomes enhanced the proliferation and migration of endothelial cells in vitro. Moreover, endothelial cells stimulated with these exosomes showed increased expression of angiogenesis-related molecules. Conclusions. Taken together, our results indicate that exosomes are an active component of the paracrine secretion of human EPCs and can promote vascular repair in rat models of balloon injury by up-regulating endothelial cells function. Background: Social changes and economic development are associated with obesity epidemic. This study is to investigate the trends of socio-economic disparity in obesity from 2002 to 2010 in a Chinese population experiencing the world's fastest economic development.Methods: Four standardized surveys were conducted in a population of 85 million residents in Guangdong, China between 2002 and 2010. Multistage random cluster sampling was used to recruit representative samples. Information on socio-economic status (SES), proxied by education, occupation and residential area, was collected by face-to-face interviews. The weight, height and waist circumference of the participants were also measured.Results: Women with low education had an increased BMI of 0.85 kg/m(2), while women with high education had a decreased BMI of 0.16 kg/m(2) (p = 0.032 for interaction test). Similar trends were observed by using occupation and residential area as the SES indicators. Analysis in men yielded similar patterns. Waist circumference increased from 73.7 to 78.4 cm, and the increasing trends of statistical significance (p < 0.01) were observed in both genders and across all SES levels, with the magnitudes of increase in low SES levels being more pronounced. The impact of gradient in food attainment and occupational physical activity across the SES levels may wear off with further economic development, while factors such as health awareness, diet pattern and leisure activity may become increasingly important in driving the disparity.Conclusion: The impact of gradient in food attainment and occupational physical activity across the SES levels may wear off with further economic development, while factors such as health awareness, diet pattern and leisure activity may become increasingly important in driving the disparity. Maintenance of biological functions under negative energy balance depends on mobilization of storage lipids and carbohydrates in animals. In mammals, glucagon and glucocorticoid signaling mobilizes energy reserves, whereas adipokinetic hormones (AKHs) play a homologous role in insects. Numerous studies based on AKH injections and correlative studies in a broad range of insect species established the view that AKH acts as master regulator of energy mobilization during development, reproduction, and stress. In contrast to AKH, the second peptide, which is processed from the Akh encoded prohormone [termed "adipokinetic hormone precursor-related peptide" (APRP)] is functionally orphan. APRP is discussed as ecdysiotropic hormone or as scaffold peptide during AKH prohormone processing. However, as in the case of AKH, final evidence for APRP functions requires genetic mutant analysis. Here we employed CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome engineering to create AKH and AKH plus APRP-specific mutants in the model insect Drosophila melanogaster. Lack of APRP did not affect any of the tested steroid-dependent processes. Similarly, Drosophila AKH signaling is dispensable for ontogenesis, locomotion, oogenesis, and homeostasis of lipid or carbohydrate storage until up to the end of metamorphosis. During adulthood, however, AKH regulates body fat content and the hemolymph sugar level as well as nutritional and oxidative stress responses. Background Today's rapid growth of migrant populations has been a major contributor to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic. However, relatively few studies have focused on HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related knowledge, attitudes, and practice among rural-to-urban migrants in China. This cross-sectional study was to assess HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and perceptions, including knowledge about reducing highrisk sex. Methods Two-phase stratified cluster sampling was applied and 2,753 rural migrants participated in this study. An anonymous self-administered questionnaire was conducted in Guangdong and Sichuan provinces in 2007. Descriptive analysis was used to present the essential characteristics of the respondents. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression models were performed to examine the associations between identified demographic factors and high-risk sex, sexually transmitted disease (STD) symptoms, and access to HIV screening services among the seven types of workers. Results 58.6% of participants were knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS transmission, but approximately 90% had a negative attitude towards the AIDS patients, and that 6.2% had engaged in highrisk sex in the past 12 months. Logistic regression analysis revealed sex, marital status, income, migration and work experience to be associated with high-risk sex. Among the 13.9% of workers who reported having STD symptoms, risk factors that were identified included female gender, high monthly income, being married, daily laborer or entertainment worker, frequent migration, and length of work experience. Only 3% of migrant workers received voluntary free HIV screening, which was positively associated with monthly income and workplace. Conclusions HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes, and practices among rural migrants in China remain a thorny health issue, and use of healthcare services needs to be improved. Low levels of education and knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS among housekeepers and migrant day laborers result in this population likely being engaged in high-risk sex. Connections between inflammation and diseases are suggested important in understanding the genetic mechanisms of diseases. However, studies on the functional cross-links between inflammation and disease genes are still in their early stages. We integrated the protein-protein interaction (PPI), inflammation genes, and gene-disease associations to construct a disease-inflammation network (DIN). We found that nodes, which are both inflammation and disease genes (namely inter-genes), are topologically important in the DIN structure. Via mapping inter-genes to PPI, we classified diseases into two categories, which are significantly different in Intimacy measuring the contribution of inflammation genes to the connections between disease pairs. Furthermore, we constructed a cross-talking subpathways network. As indicated, the cross-subpathway analysis shows great performance in capturing higher-level relationship among inflammation and disease processes. A fundamental issue in biology and medicine is illustration of the overall drug impact which is always the consequence of changes in local regions of metabolic pathways (subpathways). To gain insights into the global relationship between drugs and their affected metabolic subpathways, we constructed a drug--metabolic subpathway network (DRSN). This network included 3925 significant drug--metabolic subpathway associations representing drug dual effects. Through analyses based on network biology, we found that if drugs were linked to the same subpathways in the DRSN, they tended to share the same indications and side effects. Furthermore, if drugs shared more subpathways, they tended to share more side effects. We then calculated the association score by integrating drug-affected subpathways and disease-related subpathways to quantify the extent of the associations between each drug class and disease class. The results showed some close drug--disease associations such as sex hormone drugs and cancer suggesting drug dual effects. Surprisingly, most drugs displayed close associations with their side effects rather than their indications. To further investigate the mechanism of drug dual effects, we classified all the subpathways in the DRSN into therapeutic and non-therapeutic subpathways representing drug therapeutic effects and side effects. Compared to drug side effects, the therapeutic effects tended to work through tissue-specific genes and these genes tend to be expressed in the adrenal gland, liver and kidney; while drug side effects always occurred in the liver, bone marrow and trachea. Water lily, the member of the Nymphaeaceae family, is the symbol of Buddhism and Brahmanism in India. Despite its limited researches on flower color variations and formation mechanism, water lily has background of blue flowers and displays an exceptionally wide diversity of flower colors from purple, red, blue to yellow, in nature. In this study, 34 flavonoids were identified among 35 tropical cultivars by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with photodiode array detection (DAD) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Among them, four anthocyanins: delphinidin 3-O-rhamnosyl- 5-O-galactoside (Dp3Rh5Ga), delphinidin 3-O-(20-O-galloyl-60"-O-oxalyl-rhamnoside) (Dp3galloyl-oxalylRh), delphinidin 3-O- (60-O-acetyl-β-glucopyranoside) (Dp3acetylG) and cyanidin 3- O-(2"0-O-galloyl-galactopyranoside)-5-O-rhamnoside (Cy3galloylGa5Rh), one chalcone: chalcononaringenin 2"-O-galactoside (Chal29Ga) and twelve flavonols: myricetin 7-O-rhamnosyl- (1→2)-rhamnoside (My7RhRh), quercetin 7-O-galactosyl-(12→)-rhamnoside (Qu7GaRh), quercetin 7-O-galactoside (Qu7Ga), kaempferol 7-O-galactosyl-(1→2)-rhamnoside (Km7GaRh), myricetin 3-O-galactoside (My3Ga), kaempferol 7-O-galloylgalactosyl-( 1→2)-rhamnoside (Km7galloylGaRh), myricetin 3-O-galloylrhamnoside (My3galloylRh), kaempferol 3-O-galactoside (Km3Ga), isorhamnetin 7-O-galactoside (Is7Ga), isorhamnetin 7-O-xyloside (Is7Xy), kaempferol 3-O-(30-acetylrhamnoside) (Km3-30acetylRh) and quercetin 3-O-acetylgalactoside (Qu3acetylGa) were identified in the petals of tropic water lily for the first time. Meanwhile a multivariate analysis was used to explore the relationship between pigments and flower color. By comparing, the cultivars which were detected delphinidin 3-galactoside (Dp3Ga) presented amaranth, and detected delphinidin 3'-galactoside (Dp3'Ga) presented blue. However, the derivatives of delphinidin and cyanidin were more complicated in red group. No anthocyanins were detected within white and yellow group. At the same time a possible flavonoid biosynthesis pathway of tropical water lily was presumed putatively. These studies will help to elucidate the evolution mechanism on the formation of flower colors and provide theoretical basis for outcross breeding and developing health care products from this plant. Objective To estimate influenza-associated mortality in urban China. Methods Influenza-associated excess mortality for the period 2003-2008 was estimated in three cities in temperate northern China and five cities in the subtropical south of the country. The estimates were derived from models based on negative binomial regressions, vital statistics and the results of weekly influenza virus surveillance. Findings Annual influenza-associated excess mortality, for all causes, was 18.0 (range: 10.9-32.7) deaths per 100 000 population in the northern cities and 11.3 (range: 7.3-17.8) deaths per 100 000 in the southern cities. Excess mortality for respiratory and circulatory disease was 12.4 (range: 7.4-22.2) and 8.8 (range: 5.5-13.6) deaths per 100 000 people in the northern and southern cities, respectively. Most (86%) deaths occurred among people aged ≥ 65 years. Influenza-associated excess mortality was higher in B-virus-dominant seasons than in seasons when A(H3N2) or A(H1N1) predominated, and more than half of all influenza-associated mortality was associated with influenza B virus. Conclusion Between 2003 and 2008, seasonal influenza, particularly that caused by the influenza B virus, was associated with substantial mortality in three cities in the temperate north of China and five cities in the subtropical south of the country. Twenty novel cinnamamide derivatives were designed and synthesized using as lead compound pyrimorph, whose morpholine moiety was replaced by β-phenylethylamine. All the compounds were characterized by their spectroscopic data. The fungicidal and insecticidal activities were also evaluated. The preliminary results showed that all the title compounds had certain fungicidal activities against seven plant pathogens at a concentration of 50 μg/mL, and compounds 11a and 11l showed inhibition ratios of up to 90% against R. solani. Most of the title compounds exhibited moderate nematicidal activities. Lycoris longituba is one of the species belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. Despite its limited distribution, endemic to central eastern China, this species displays an exceptionally wide diversity of flower colors from purple, red, orange, to yellow, in nature. We study the natural variation of floral color in L. longituba by testing the components of water-soluble vacuolar pigments - anthocyanins - in its petals using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array detection and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Four anthocyanins were identified, cyanidin-3-sophoroside (Cy3So), cyanidin-3-xylosylglucoside (Cy3XyGlc), cyanidin-3-sambubioside (Cy3Sa), and pelargonidin-3-xylosylglucoside (Pg3XyGlc), which occur at various amounts in L. longituba petals of different colors. A multivariate analysis was used to explore the relationship between pigments and flower color. Anthocyanins have been thought to play a major role in acting as a UV screen that protects the plant's DNA from sunlight damage and attracting insects for the purpose of pollination. Background: The Dabaoshan mine in the southeast of Guangdong Province, China, is at high risk of multi-metal pollutant discharge into a local river (Hengshihe) and the surrounding area. Following approximately 30 years of exposure to these metals, little is known regarding the subsequent health effects and risks for the local residents. In our present study, we have estimated the relationships between long-term environmental exposure to multiple heavy metals and the risk of cancer mortality in a Chinese population in the vicinity of Dabaoshan. Methods: An ecologic study was performed. Between 2000-2007, a total population of 194,131 lived in the nine agricultural villages that surround the Hengshihe area. Heavy metals concentrations were determined in local environmental samples (water and crops) and whole blood taken from 1152 local residents of both a highexposure area (HEA) and a low-exposure area (LEA). We calculated the rate ratio and standardized mortality ratios based on age- and gender-specific cancer mortality rates for the different reference populations (based on district, county and province). Simple, multiple linear and ridge regression models were used to evaluate the associations between exposure to multiple heavy metals and cancer mortality in the nine villages, after adjustment for age and sex. Results: The geometric mean blood levels of cadmium and lead were measured at 24.10 μg/L and 38.91 μg/dL for subjects (n = 563) in the HEA and 1.87 μg/L and 4.46 μg/dL for subjects (n = 589) from the LEA, respectively (P < 0.001). The rate of mortality from all cancers in the HEA was substantially elevated in comparison with the corresponding mortality rate in the LEA for men (rate ratio = 2.13; 95% confidence intervals = 1.63 - 2.77) and women (2.83; 1.91 - 4.19); rates were also significantly elevated compared with the rate when compared to the entire Wengyuan County area, or the provincial reference population. In addition, mortality rates were significantly increased for stomach, lung and esophageal cancer in the HEA in comparison with the corresponding rates in the LEA, in Wengyuan County and the provincial reference population for men, women and both combined. Further analysis showed that there were significantly positive correlations between exposure to cadmium and lead and the risk of all-cancers and stomach cancer mortality among women and both sexes, whilst zinc exposure showed no association with the risk of site-specific cancer mortality in the nine villages evaluated. Conclusions: The findings of this study reveal probable associations between long-term environmental exposure to both cadmium and lead and an increased risk of mortality from all cancer, as well as from stomach, esophageal and lung-cancers. Reductions in pain ratings when administered a placebo with expected analgesic properties have been described and hypothesized to be mediated by the pain-suppressive endogenous opioid system. Using molecular imaging techniques, we directly examined the activity of the endogenous opioid system on μ-opioid receptors in humans in sustained pain with and without the administration of a placebo. Significant placebo-induced activation of μ-opioid receptor-mediated neurotransmission was observed in both higher-order and subcortical brain regions, which included the pregenual and subgenual rostral anterior cingulate, the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the insular cortex, and the nucleus accumbens. Regional activations were paralleled by lower ratings of pain intensity, reductions in its sensory and affective qualities, and in the negative emotional state of the volunteers. These data demonstrate that cognitive factors (e.g., expectation of pain relief) are capable of modulating physical and emotional states through the site-specific activation of μ-opioid receptor signaling in the human brain. Swift J1858.6−0814 was discovered by the Burst Alert Telescope on Swift on 2018 October 25. Here we report on the first follow-up Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) observation of the source, which shows variability spanning two orders of magnitude in count rate on timescales of ∼10–100 s. The power spectrum of the source does not show any quasi-periodic oscillations or periodicity, but has a large fractional rms amplitude of 147% ± 3%, exhibiting a number of large flares throughout the observation. The hardness ratio (defined as R10–79keV/R3–10keV) of the flares tends to be soft, while the source spans a range of hardness ratios during nonflaring periods. The X-ray spectrum of the source shows strong reflection features, which become more narrow and peaked during the nonflaring intervals. We fit an absorbed relativistic reflection model to the source spectra to place physical constraints on the system. Most notably, we find that the source exhibits a large and varying intrinsic absorbing column density (NH = (1.4–4.2) × 1023 cm−2). This large intrinsic absorption is further supported by the energy spectra extracted from two flares observed simultaneously by NuSTAR and the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer. We find that the inner accretion disk of the source has a low inclination, (3σ upper limit), while the iron abundance in the disk is close to solar, AFe = 1.0 ± 0.3. We set a 90% confidence upper limit on the inner radius of the accretion disk of rin < 8rISCO and, by fixing rin to be at rISCO, a 90% confidence lower limit on the spin of the black hole of . Finally, we compare the properties of Swift J1858.6−0814 to those of V404 Cygni and V4641 Sgr, which both show rapid flaring and a strong and variable absorption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on the spectroscopic analysis of the black hole binary GX 339−4 during its recent 2017–2018 outburst, observed simultaneously by the Swift and NuSTAR observatories. Although during this particular outburst the source failed to make state transitions, and despite Sun constraints during the peak luminosity, we were able to trigger four different observations sampling the evolution of the source in the hard state. We show that even for the lowest-luminosity observations the NuSTAR spectra show clear signatures of X-ray reprocessing (reflection) in an accretion disk. Detailed analysis of the highest signal-to-noise spectra with our family of relativistic reflection models relxill indicates the presence of both broad and narrow reflection components. We find that a dual-lamppost model provides a superior fit when compared to the standard single lamppost plus distant neutral reflection. In the dual-lamppost model two sources at different heights are placed on the rotational axis of the black hole, suggesting that the narrow component of the Fe K emission is likely to originate in regions far away in the disk, but still significantly affected by its rotational motions. Regardless of the geometry assumed, we find that the inner edge of the accretion disk reaches a few gravitational radii in all our fits, consistent with previous determinations at similar luminosity levels. This confirms a very low degree of disk truncation for this source at luminosities above ∼1% Eddington. Ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) pulsars are a new class of object powered by apparent super-critical accretion onto magnetized neutron stars. Three sources in this class have been identified so far; M82 X-2, NGC 5907 ULX-1, and NGC 7793 P13 have been found to have two properties in common; ∼1 s spin periods, and for NGC 5907 ULX-1 and NGC 7793 P13 periodic X-ray flux modulations on timescales of ∼60–80 days. M82 X-2 resides in a crowded field that includes the ULX M82 X-1 separated from X-2 by 5″, as well as other bright point sources. A 60 day modulation has been observed from the region, but the origin has been difficult to identify; both M82 X-1 and X-2 have been suggested as the source. In this paper we present the analysis of a systematic monitoring campaign by Chandra, the only X-ray telescope capable of resolving the crowded field. From a simple Lomb–Scargle periodogram analysis and a more sophisticated Gaussian Process analysis we find that only X-2 exhibits a periodic signal around 60 days, supporting previous claims that it is the origin. We also construct a phase-averaged flux profile of the modulations from higher-cadence Swift/XRT data and find that the flux variations in the Chandra data are fully consistent with the flux profile. Since the orbit of the neutron star and its companion is known to be 2.5 days, the ∼60 day period must be super-orbital in origin. The flux of the modulations varies by a factor of ∼100 from the minimum to the maximum, with no evidence for spectral variations, making the origin difficult to explain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the crucial role of interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in a Co(Fe)/MgO-based magnetic tunnel junction, the underlying mechanism is still being debated. Here, we report an anatomical study of the oxygen and Mg effect on Pt/Co bilayers through repeated in situ anomalous Hall effect measurements, controlled oxygen exposure, and Mg deposition in an ultrahigh vacuum system. We found that chemisorbed oxygen not only quenches the effective magnetic moment of the Co surface layer, but also softens its magnetic anisotropy. However, a subsequent Mg dusting on the oxygen preexposed Pt/Co surface can recover the magnetic anisotropy. The ab initio calculations on the exchange splitting and orbital hybridization near the Fermi level give a clear physical explanation of the experimental observations. Our results suggest that the Co(Fe)-O-M bond plays a more important role than the widely perceived Co(Fe)-O bond does in realizing interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in Co(Fe)/MgO heterostructures.
