Introduction This study examined the training effects of an online game-based cognitive bias modification for interpretation (CBM-I) program in reducing fear during the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong. In addition to investigating the changes in both proximal (i.e. negative and positive interpretations) and distal outcomes (i.e. fear of COVID-19), we examined whether individuals with higher baseline resilience levels would benefit more from the CBM-I program.Methods A total of 68 Hong Kong undergraduate students were randomized into either the CBM-I group or a control group, among which 66 participants completed the pretest, post-test, and follow-up on negative and positive interpretations, fear of COVID-19, and resilience.Results Compared to the control group, the CBM-I training group showed a significantly greater decrease in negative interpretations, a significantly greater increase in positive interpretations of COVID-19-related ambiguous scenarios, and a trend toward a greater reduction in fear of COVID-19. The CBM-I training was more effective at reducing fear among those with higher levels of resilience at baseline, whereas the control group showed the opposite effect, albeit to a lesser extent.Conclusion This online game-based CBM-I training shows the potential to modify the negative interpretation bias toward fear-inducing scenarios and contributes to the reduction of fear. Baseline screening of resilient individuals may optimize the training effects.

Abstract Acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a life‐threatening condition with a high mortality rate of ≈40%. Thyroid hormones (THs) play crucial roles in maintaining homeostasis of the cellular microenvironment under stress. The previous studies confirmed that the clinical‐stage TH analog GC‐1 significantly alleviates pulmonary fibrosis by improving the function of mitochondria in epithelial cells. However, the effects of GC‐1 on macrophages in lung injury and the related mechanisms remain unclear. This study evaluated the therapeutic effects of GC‐1 in two murine models of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐ or hydrochloric acid (HCl)‐induced ALI. Additionally, mouse alveolar macrophages (AMs) and human THP‐1‐derived macrophages are utilized to investigate the impact of GC‐1 on macrophage polarization. GC‐1 effectively reduces the inflammatory response and lung injury in ALI mice, as evidenced by neutrophil infiltration, cytokine levels, alveolar fluid clearance, and pulmonary pathology. Notably, GC‐1 selectively inhibits M1 macrophage polarization, which may be achieved by impeding NF‐κB signaling activation through the DNMT3b‐PPARγ‐NF‐κB pathway in a TH receptor β1 (TRβ1)‐dependent manner, consequently suppressing the polarization of macrophages toward the M1 phenotype and overproduction of inflammatory cytokines. Overall, these findings highlight the immunomodulatory property of GC‐1 as an anti‐inflammatory strategy for ALI/ARDS and inflammation‐related diseases.

Background: Chemoresistance represented one of the challenges in the treatment of advanced gastric cancer (GC). Curcumol (CUR) was found to have a certain sensitizing effect on chemoresistance, although the mechanism was not yet fully understood. Purpose: To clarify the ability of CUR to intervene in the sensitivity of GC cells to Cisplatin (CDDP) by regulating the induction of ferroptosis through the P62/KEAP1/NRF2 pathway. Methods: An in vitro resistant cell line was established and treated with CUR for intervention. The synergy was evaluated using synergyfinder3.0 software. The impact of the combined use of CUR and CDDP on the proliferation, migration, and invasion of resistant GC cells was determined. The effect of CUR on ferroptosis in resistant GC cell lines was evaluated by measuring changes in reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, iron ion levels, and the ratio of reduced glutathione (GSH) to oxidized glutathione (GSSG). Western blotting was used to verify the expression changes of the ferroptosis-related indicator GPX4 and the differential expression of the antioxidant-related pathway P62/KEAP1/NRF2, validating the mechanism by which CUR induces ferroptosis in resistant GC cells. In vivo validation was performed using a xenograft mouse model. Results: The evaluation by synergy3.0 revealed a synergistic effect between CUR and CDDP. After treatment with CUR and CDDP, resistant GC cell lines exhibited reduced proliferation, migration, and invasion capabilities. Furthermore, the resistant GC cell lines underwent ferroptosis, with significant changes observed in ferroptosis-related indicators such as ROS, MDA, iron ions, and GSH/GSSG. The ferroptosis-related targets Glutathione Peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and the antioxidant pathway P62/KEAP1/NRF2 signaling pathway also showed significant changes. In in vivo validation, the combination of CUR and CDDP inhibited the growth of subcutaneous tumors and was found to be associated with the inhibition of subcutaneous xenografts and the GPX4 and P62/KEAP1/NRF2 signaling pathways. Conclusion: This study first revealed that CUR enhanced the sensitivity of cisplatin-resistant GC cells to CDDP by inducing ferroptosis. The combination of CUR and CDDP induces ferroptosis in cisplatin-resistant GC through the P62/KEAP1/NRF2 pathway.

Abstract Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic, progressive, fibrotic interstitial lung diseases, which mainly existed in middle-aged and elderly people. The accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a common characteristic of IPF. Previous research also shown that lactate levels can be abnormally elevated in IPF patients. Emerging evidence suggested a relationship between lactate and ROS in IPF which needs further elucidation. In this article, we utilized a mouse model of BLM-induced pulmonary fibrosis to detect alterations in ROS levels and other indicators associated with fibrosis. Lactate could induce mitochondrial fragmentation by modulating expression and activity of DRP1 and ERK. Moreover, Increased ROS promoted P65 translocation into nucleus, leading to expression of lung fibrotic markers. Finally, Ulixertinib, Mdivi-1 and Mito-TEMPO, which were inhibitor activity of ERK, DRP1 and mtROS, respectively, could effectively prevented mitochondrial damage and production of ROS and eventually alleviate pulmonary fibrosis. Taken together, these findings suggested that lactate could promote lung fibrosis by increasing mitochondrial fission-derived ROS via ERK/DRP1 signaling, which may provide novel therapeutic solutions for IPF.

The emergence of porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) presents a significant threat to both human and animal health due to its ability to cause highly contagious enteric diseases. This underscores the crucial need for timely and accurate diagnosis to facilitate effective epidemiological investigation and clinical management. This research aimed to establish a visual detection method based on reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) for PDCoV testing. In this study, six pairs of primers were designed according to the conserved sequences of PDCoV ORF1a/b genes. The primer sets and parameters that affect LAMP reaction were optimized. The visual RT-LAMP method was developed by incorporating methyl red into the optimized reaction system, it exclusively detected PDCoV without cross-reactivity with other viruses and the detection limits for PDCoV could reach 10 copies/μL. In comparison with RT-PCR for testing 132 clinical samples, the relative specificity and sensitivity of the visual RT-LAMP were found to be 99.2 and 100%, respectively, with a concordance rate of 99.2% and a kappa value of 0.959, indicating that the visual RT-LAMP is a reliable method for the application of PDCoV detection in clinical samples.

Previous research has suggested that there are two modular processes of perspective selection and calculation in level 1 perspective taking. Evidence further showed that verbal working memory is associated with both processes in adults. However, research has not tested whether verbal working memory may be associated with working memory in children. Moreover, since perspective taking is associated with spatial working memory, it is necessary to investigate whether spatial working memory links to both processes. By recruiting 9-year-old children and college students in the single-task paradigm and the dual-task paradigm, we conducted two experiments to answer these questions. Results in experiment 1 suggested that verbal working memory correlated with adults’ perspective calculation, but with both processes in children’s perspective taking. Results in experiment 2 showed that spatial working memory is associated with adults’ perspective calculation and children’s perspective selection. These findings suggest that different components of working memory play distinct roles in the processing of perspective taking, which is moderated by age.

Anxiety and depression caused by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) negatively affect the mental health of patients. Emerging studies have demonstrated that the gut-brain axis (GBA) mediates IBD-induced mood disorders, but the underlying mechanisms of these findings remain unknown. Therefore, it's vital to conduct comprehensive research on the GBA in IBD. Multi-omics studies can provide an understanding of the pathological mechanisms of the GBA in the development of IBD, helping to uncover the mechanisms underlying the onset and progression of the disease. Thus, we analyzed the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of Dextran Sulfate Sodium Salt (DSS)-induced IBD mice using transcriptomics and metabolomics. We observed increased mRNA related to acetylcholine synthesis and secretion, along with decreased phosphatidylcholine (PC) levels in the PFC of DSS group compared to the control group. Fecal metagenomics also revealed abnormalities in the microbiome and lipid metabolism in the DSS group. Since both acetylcholine and PC are choline metabolites, we posited that the DSS group may experience choline deficiency and choline metabolism disorders. Subsequently, when we supplemented CDP-choline, IBD mice exhibited improvements, including decreased anxiety-like behaviors, reduced PC degradation, and increased acetylcholine synthesis in the PFC. In addition, administration of CDP-choline can restore imbalances in the gut microbiome and disruptions in lipid metabolism caused by DSS treatment. This study provides compelling evidence to suggest that choline metabolism plays a crucial role in the development and treatment of mood disorders in IBD. Choline and its metabolites appear to have a significant role in maintaining the stability of the GBA.

Abstract Active and avoidant coping styles are important dispositional factors in the development of anxiety and depression symptoms. Children use both active and avoidant coping strategies together in daily life. No studies have investigated the relationship between active–avoidant coping profiles and internalizing symptoms in children. The present study aimed to investigate children’s active–avoidant coping profiles and assess the relationship that active–avoidant coping profiles have with anxiety and depression symptoms. A two-wave longitudinal study was conducted among 322 Chinese children in the People’s Republic of China during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants completed the Children’s Coping Strategies Checklist-Revised 1 at Time 1 and the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale at Time 1 and 6 months later (Time 2). Four active–avoidant coping profiles were revealed: low active copers, high active copers, balanced copers, and avoidant copers. Low and high active copers had lower levels of anxiety and depression symptoms than balanced copers and avoidant copers. Avoidant copers showed a larger decrease in depression symptoms than balanced copers and high active copers during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important to improve children’s active–avoidant coping profiles to relieve anxiety and depression symptoms.

Effective and inexpensive electrocatalysts are significant to improve the performance of oxygen evolution reaction. Facing the bottleneck of slow kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction, it is highly desirable to design the electrocatalyst with high activity, good conductivity, and satisfactory stability. In this work, nickel foam supported hierarchical Co9S8–Ni3S2 composite hollow microspheres were derived from in situ-generative MOF precursors and the subsequent sulfurization process by a simple two-step solvothermal method. The composite microspheres were directly grown on nickel foam without any binder, and nickel foam was used as the nickel source and support material. The morphology and constitution of the series self-supported electrodes were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, and Raman, respectively. The unique porous architecture enriched the electrode with sufficient active surface and helped to reactants and bubble evolved during electrochemical water oxidation. Through tuning the concentration of cobalt source and ligand, the content ratio of Co9S8 and Ni3S2 can be modulated. The heterostructures not only afford active interfaces between the phases but also allow electronic transfer between Co9S8 and Ni3S2. The optimized Co9S8-Ni3S2/NF-0.6 electrode with the highest electrochemical surface area and conductivity shows the best OER performance among the series electrodes in 1 M KOH solution. The overpotential of Co9S8-Ni3S2/NF-0.6 is only 233 mV when the current density is 10 mA cm−2, and corresponding Tafel slope is 116.75 mV dec−1. In addition, the current density of Co9S8-Ni3S2/NF-0.6 electrocatalyst hardly decreased during the 12 h stability measurement. Our approach in this work may provide the future rational design and synthesis of satisfactory OER electrocatalysts.

For a grasping task planner, the pre-planning of the reachable tip pose in a manipulator’s workspace is important. On this basis, for a seven-degree-of-freedom (7-DOF) redundant manipulator, it is very meaningful to study how to give full play to its redundant characteristics to achieve more dexterous grasping. In this paper, through the improved shape primitive method, the reachability spheres of the 7-DOF manipulator studied were more accurately captured, and a more accurate reachability capability map was generated. Then, based on the idea of redundancy angle discretization, the concept of the obstacle avoidance ability (OAA) index is innovatively proposed to measure the dexterity of the grasping task of the manipulator in a certain tip pose. Based on the OAA index axis, the distribution of the OAA index in each reachability sphere was analyzed. The prediction models of the OAA index of all reachability spheres in the workspace of the manipulator were obtained by the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm and finally formed a dexterity capability map of the manipulator, which provides a new idea for the pre-planning of the dexterous grasping task of the redundant manipulator. Finally, we give the general frameworks of different grasping pre-planning by combining two kinds of capability maps and verify the effect.

Background We aimed to analyze the epidemiological and drug-resistance trends among bacterial cultures from perioperative infections in patients with primary ovarian cancer. Methods Medical and bacteriological records for patients with ovarian cancer patients who developed perioperative infections after primary cytoreductive surgery from 1999 to 2018 were reviewed retrospectively. Results The incidence of perioperative infections and the culture-positive percentage among patients in the first 10 years were 20.2% and 29.3%, respectively, and the equivalent rates in the second 10 years were 18.0% and 33.5%. The most commonly isolated pathogens in both year-groups were Escherichia coli and Enterococcus spp., but the respective percentages differed between the groups. Some strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus spp. in the second 10-year group were resistant to linezolid and vancomycin, and ciprofloxacin resistance among Gram-negative bacteria isolates also increased in this group. However, resistance of Gram-negative bacteria to imipenem and meropenem was low among in both groups. Conclusion The pathogen distribution in perioperative infections in patients with primary ovarian cancer undergoing cytoreductive changed slightly from 1999 to 2018, and the antibiotic resistance of the main isolated pathogens increased. These results indicate the importance of periodic bacterial surveillance of surgical infections in these patients.

Estimating the depth of image and egomotion of agent are important for autonomous and robot in understanding the surrounding environment and avoiding collision. Most existing unsupervised methods estimate depth and camera egomotion by minimizing photometric error between adjacent frames. However, the photometric consistency sometimes does not meet the real situation, such as brightness change, moving objects and occlusion. To reduce the influence of brightness change, we propose a feature pyramid matching loss (FPML) which captures the trainable feature error between a current and the adjacent frames and therefore it is more robust than photometric error. In addition, we propose the occlusion-aware mask (OAM) network which can indicate occlusion according to change of masks to improve estimation accuracy of depth and camera pose. The experimental results verify that the proposed unsupervised approach is highly competitive against the state-of-the-art methods, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Specifically, our method reduces absolute relative error (Abs Rel) by 0.017–0.088.

Understanding the distribution pattern and maintenance mechanism of species diversity along environmental gradients is essential for developing biodiversity conservation strategies under environmental change. We have surveyed the species diversity at 192 vegetation sites across different steppe zones in Inner Mongolia, China. We analysed the total species diversity (γ diversity) and its composition (α diversity and β diversity) of different steppe types, and their changes along a precipitation gradient. Our results showed that (i) β diversity contributed more than α diversity to the total (γ) diversity in the Inner Mongolia grassland; the contribution of β diversity increased with precipitation, thus the species-rich (meadow steppe) grassland had greater contribution of β diversity than species-poor (desert steppe) grassland. (ii) All α, β and γ species diversity increased significantly (P0.10). (iii) The α diversity increased logarithmically, while β diversity increased exponentially, with γ diversity. Our results suggest that for local species diversity patterns, the site species pool is more important in lower precipitation areas, while local ecological processes are more important in high precipitation areas. In addition, for β diversity maintenance niche processes and diffusion processes are more important in low and high precipitation areas, respectively. Our results imply that a policy of "multiple small reserves" is better than one of a "single large reserve" for conserving species diversity of a steppe ecosystem, and indicate an urgent need to develop management strategies for climate-sensitive desert steppe ecosystem.
