Transmembrane transport remains a significant challenge for nucleic acid vaccine vectors. Promoting the ability of immune cells, such as macrophages, to capture foreign stimuli is also an effective approach to improving cross-presentation. In addition, polyethyleneimine (PEI) has gained attention in the field of nucleic acid vaccine carriers due to its excellent gene transfection efficiency and unique proton buffering effect. However, although high molecular weight PEI exhibits high efficiency, its high-density positive charges make it highly toxic, which limits its application. In this study, mannose/stearyl chloride functionalized polyethylenimine (SA-Man-PEI) was prepared by functionalizing PEI (molecular weight of 25 kDa) with mannose with immunomodulatory and phagocyte targeting effects, and an alkyl hydrophobic chain segment, which could easily promote cell uptake. Moreover, the functionalized-PEI retains a strong proton buffering effect, which helps the carrier escape from the lysosome. The particle sizes of the composite particles formed by SA-Man-PEI and ovalbumin (OVA) were below 200 nm, with good storage stability at both 4 °C and 37 °C. At a drug concentration of 2 μg/mL, the cell survival rate of functionalized-PEI was 19.2% higher than that of unfunctionalized PEI. In vitro macrophage endocytosis experiments showed that SA-Man-PEI could significantly enhance the macrophage uptake of composite particles, compared to unfunctionalized PEI or single-functionalized PEI. This study offers a new approach for developing PEI as a nucleic acid vaccine carrier, which could simultaneously enhance cell targeting and promote cell uptake.

Abstract Infertility affects approximately one-sixth of couples globally, with the incidence of male infertility steadily increasing. However, our understanding of the impact of viral infections on fertility remains limited. This review consolidates findings from previous studies, outlining 40 viruses identified in human semen and summarizing their key characteristics, modes of transmission, and their effects on both the reproductive and endocrine systems. Furthermore, it elucidates potential pathogenic mechanisms and treatment prospects of viruses strongly associated with male infertility. This synthesis will enhance our comprehension of how viral infections influence male reproductive health, offering valuable insights for future research as well as the diagnosis and treatment of infectious infertility. Retinoic acid (RA) plays a critical role in initiating meiosis in primordial germ cells (PGC), yet the specific mechanisms of its interaction with PGC remain unclear. In this study, we used an in vitro feeder-free culture system with chicken PGC as a model to explore the mechanisms by which RA induces the entry of PGC into meiosis. Results demonstrated that exogenous RA treatment altered the cell cycle distribution of PGC, significantly increasing the proportion of cells in the G1 phase and decreasing those in the G2 phase, suggesting that RA may promote the transition of PGC from proliferation to differentiation. Giemsa staining further revealed that chromosomes in a subset of RA-treated PGC exhibited meiotic characteristics. Through combined RNA-seq and ATAC-seq analyses, we identified that CYP26A1, a gene involved in RA degradation, was significantly upregulated in the RA-treated group, with enhanced accessibility in its chromatin regions. This finding suggests a robust mechanism for self-regulation of RA levels within PGC, indicating that CYP26A1 may play a pivotal role in the degradation of exogenous RA in chicken PGC. This study elucidated the effects of RA on chicken PGC and provided new insights into the role of RA in germ cell differentiation.

Abstract Silver/polymeric vesicle composite nanoparticles with good antibacterial properties were fabricated in this study. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared in situ on cross‐linked vesicle membranes through the reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) via coordination bonding between the Ag+ ions and the nitrogen atoms on the vesicles. X‐ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy (UV‐vis), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses confirmed the formation of AgNPs on the vesicles. The antibacterial test demonstrated good antibacterial activity against both Gram‐negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) and Gram‐positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) for the produced AgNP‐decorated vesicles. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the AgNP‐decorated vesicles for E. coli and S. aureus were 8.4 and 9.6 μg/mL, respectively. Cell viability analysis on the A549 cells indicated that the toxicity was low when the AgNP concentrations did not exceed the MIC values, and the wound healing test confirmed the good antibacterial properties of the AgNP‐decorated vesicles.

It is well known that the poor corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys is a key factor limiting their application. Field exposure is the most reliable means to evaluate the atmospheric corrosion performance of magnesium alloys. This article reviews the field exposure corrosion behavior of magnesium alloys in typical atmospheric environments (including the marine atmosphere, industrial atmosphere, etc.) in recent years. According to the literature review, it was found that there are significant regional differences in the atmospheric corrosion behavior of magnesium alloys, which is the result of the coupling of multiple factors in the atmospheric environment. By investigating the corrosion rate and corrosion products of different types of magnesium alloys in different environments, the corrosion mechanism of magnesium alloys in different environments was summarized. Specifically, environmental parameters such as atmospheric temperature, relative humidity, CO2, and chloride ion deposition rates in the marine atmospheric environment can affect the corrosion behavior of magnesium alloys. The corrosion of magnesium alloys in different industrial atmospheric environments is mainly affected by atmospheric temperature and relative humidity, as well as atmospheric pollutants (such as SO2, CO2, NO2) and dust. This review provides assistance to the development of new corrosion-resistant magnesium alloys.

Transflective electrochromic (EC) materials with the ability to dynamically adjust color in both reflection and transmission mode are extremely attractive for tunable filter, smart windows, and ultralow-power displays due to their wide applicability in dark and bright environment and unique tunability of optical properties. However, simultaneously brilliant multicolor modulation of both reflection and transmission in one EC film is challenging. Here, integrated and metal/dielectric structured EC electrode composed of three-layered Cr/Ag/WO3 (CAW) films are demonstrated. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the good conductivity, strong optical interference, and excellent substrate-film adhesion, these well-designed CAW films successfully demonstrate dynamic variegated modulation of both reflective and transmissive colors. This modulation encompasses a broad spectrum of hues, boasts high saturation, rapid response times, and exhibits impressive cycling stability. The flexible CAW film with superior bending stability is also achieved for the successful construction of the patterned flexible EC device.

The impact of whiting events on global inorganic carbon cycle and climate change is debatable at the current ocean pH. This work engineered whiting events in a high pH, high alkalinity microalgal culture for carbon dioxide capture and storage. When growing the marine microalga Nannochloropsis oceanica IMET1 in photobioreactors, culture alkalinity more than doubled, increasing from 72.5 mg L-1 to a maximum level of 159.6 mg L-1. At the same time, culture pH increased from 7.9 to 10.1 with concomitant calcium carbonate production. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the precipitated calcium carbonate was primarily monohydrocalcite. The lab culture was scaled up to a 340-L bioreactor, in which Nannochloropsis ash-free dry weight productivities ranged from 25.1 to 51.4 g m-2 d-1 and a maximum monohydrocalcite productivity of 133.4 g m2 d-1 was recorded. In this system, Nannochloropsis biomass contained about 23.9 % lipids and the eicosapentaenoic acid content was about 1.8 %. Together, these results suggest the microalgae-driven calcium carbonate and biomass production process efficiently captures and stores atmospheric carbon dioxide in the form of calcium carbonate while producing valuable bioproducts. Study of the bacterial communities associated with the Nannochloropsis culture identified four dominant species Maricaulis maris, Marinisubtilis pacificus, Gracilimonas sp., and an uncultured bacterium in the OD1 phylum with interesting features that warrant further investigation.

Four multi-catheterized lactating goats were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square experiment to investigate the responses of amino acid metabolism in portal-drained viscera (PDV), liver, and mammary glands to short-term varying supplies of methionine (Met). During the last 45 h in each experimental period, goats were fasted for 12 h and then abomasally infused with an amino acid (AA) mixture plus glucose for 33 h. Treatments consisted of graded removal of Met from an infused AA mixture to achieve Met content in the infusate of 100% (complete), 60%, 30%, or 0% that in casein. Graded Met removal decreased the production of milk, milk protein, lactose, and fat linearly whilst also decreasing arterial Met concentration linearly (P 0.1) was maintained as Met supply declined. In the field of rock engineering, complexity of stress environment is an important factor affecting its stability. Thus, in view of fracture mechanism of rock under different loading rates within the scope of quasi-static strain rate, four groups of uniaxial compression tests with different strain rates were carried out on sandstone specimens, and strength, deformation, failure modes and acoustic emission characteristics of specimens were compared and analyzed. Furthermore, the fracture mechanism was discussed from the perspective of fracture characteristics based on fractal dimension, crack propagation law inverted through acoustic emission b-value, and micro fracture morphology. The results showed that as the strain rate increased from 10 to 5 s−1 to 10−2 s−1, the fractal dimension of rock fragments increased, and the fractal dimension of rock fragments increased by 9.66%, 7.32%, and 3.77% successively for every 10 times increase in strain rate, which means that the equivalent size of fragments was getting smaller, and the fragmentation feature was becoming increasingly prominent. The crack propagation process based on acoustic emission b-value showed that with the increase of loading rate, the specimen entered the rapid crack propagation stage earlier, in order of 68%, 66%, 29%, and 22% of peak stress. Moreover, the microscopic fracture morphology showed that with the increase of loading rate, transgranular phenomenon was clear, and the fracture morphology changed from smooth to rough. That meant that the fracture of sandstone rock at high loading rates was mainly caused by the propagation of large cracks, which was different from the slow process of initiation, convergence and re-propagation of small cracks at low strain rates.

AbstractPost-encapsulation and release of the anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX·HCl) through cell-like transmission functions of polymeric vesicles were studied using cross-linked pH-responsive polymeric vesicles. The vesicles were fabricated for the first time via the redox-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer dispersion polymerization in ethanol-water mixture, using 2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate, and the vesicle membrane was modified post-cross-linking by using ethylenediamine. A phase diagram was constructed for reproducible fabrication of the polymeric vesicles, and well-shaped vesicles were formed when the target degree of polymerization of the hydrophobic polymer chains was equal to or higher than 50 with solid content in the range of 10–30 wt%. The cross-linked vesicle membrane served as a gate enabling “open” and “closed” states in response to pH stimulation. Up to 50% drug loading efficiency and 39% drug loading content could be achieved, and in vitro release of the DOX-loaded vesicles in aqueous buffer solutions showed a much faster DOX release rate at pH 5.0 than at pH 6.5. The polymeric vesicles were of very low cytotoxicity to A549 cells up to the concentration of 2 mg/mL, and the IC50 of DOX-loaded vesicles were higher than that of the free DOX. The intracellular DOX release study indicated higher cellular uptake capability for DOX-loaded vesicles than that of free DOX.

Abstract The service life of an artificial hip joint is limited to 10–15 years, which is not ideal for young patients. To extend the lifespan of these prostheses, the coefficient of friction and wear resistance of metallic femoral heads must be improved. In this study, a Cu‐doped titanium nitride (TiNX–Cu) film with “autoantifriction” properties is deposited on a CoCrMo alloy via magnetron sputtering. When delivered in a protein‐containing lubricating medium, the Cu in TiNX–Cu quickly and consistently binds to the protein molecules in the microenvironment, resulting in the formation of a stable protein layer. The proteins adsorbed on the TiNX–Cu surface decompose into hydrocarbon fragments owing to the shear stress between the Al2O3/TiNX–Cu tribopair. The synergistic effect of the catalysis of Cu and shear stress between the Al2O3/TiNX–Cu tribopair transforms these fragments into graphite‐like carbon tribofilms with an antifriction property. These tribofilms can simultaneously reduce the friction coefficient of the Al2O3/TiNX–Cu tribopair and enhance the wear resistance of the TiNX–Cu film. Based on these findings, it is believed that the autoantifriction film can drive the generation of antifriction tribofilms for lubricating and increasing the wear resistance of prosthetic devices, thereby prolonging their lifespan.

In order to apply damping technology to complex interaction system, a two-dimensional finite element-infinite element coupling model of tunnel-soil-surface building interaction system was established by ABAQUS. By analyzing the acceleration, displacement and stress response of key points of tunnel and surface buildings, the influence of the thickness and buried depth of the shock absorption layer on the damping effect of the system is studied when tunnel shock absorption layer (or foundation shock absorption layer) is set separately. And a combined shock absorption system is proposed for the complex interaction system, and the primary and secondary relationship of different factors on the damping effect is studied by orthogonal experiment. The results showed that: (1) setting up a tunnel shock absorption layer can significantly reduce the maximum principal stress of the tunnel and the acceleration of the surface building; (2) when the buried depth of the foundation shock absorption layer was 0 m, the damping effect was the best, which can significantly reduce the acceleration and relative displacement of the surface building; (3) The combined shock absorption system can achieve good damping effect under different seismic waves excitation and its damping effect was better than single shock absorption layer system.

The austenite grain growth and recrystallization behaviors of three pipeline steels with different Nb contents were investigated through reheating and thermal simulation compression experiments. The initiation conditions for dynamic and sub-dynamic recrystallization of austenite were analyzed, and sub-dynamic recrystallization equations in Avrami form were established. The influences of Nb content and deformation conditions on the evolution of grain size during austenite recrystallization was examined. The findings indicate that the austenite grain size of the three steels increases gradually with higher reheating temperatures, while the average grain size decreases with increasing Nb content. Sub-dynamic recrystallization initiation temperatures for the B150-steel, B145-steel, and 73-steel were found to be 920 °C for 10 s, 940 °C for 30 s, and 960 °C for 30 s, respectively. During high-temperature deformation, Nb in solid solution hindered recrystallization by impeding grain boundary and dislocation movement. At lower deformation temperatures, Nb(C, N) precipitation pinned grain boundaries and dislocations and consumed substantial free energy, thus competing with recrystallization. As Nb content increased, strain-induced precipitation became more pronounced, resulting in more effective inhibition of recrystallized grain growth.

Tetrasubstituted olefins have been explored as chemical synthons and can sometime have useful photophysical properties, but are sometimes difficult to synthesize with high selectivity in mild conditions. Here the authors present a method to make tetrasubstituted olefins via dual photo- and nickel catalysis, without the need for an inert atmosphere.

Abstract Biochar application can influence soil nitrogen (N) cycle through biological and abiotic processes. However, studies on comprehensive examination of the effects of biochar application on microbially mediated N‐cycling processes (N mineralization, nitrification, denitrification, and fixation) and soil N fate (i.e., plant N uptake, soil N2O emission, and N leaching) are warranted. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effects of biochar application on soil N transformation, microbial functional gene abundance, enzyme activity, and plant N uptake. To achieve the objective of this study, a meta‐analysis involving 131 peer‐reviewed field experiments was conducted. Results showed that field application of biochar significantly enhanced soil NH4+ and NO3‐ content, N mineralization, nitrification, N2 fixation, and plant N uptake by 5.3%, 3.7%, 15.3%, 48.5%, 14.7%, and 18.3%, respectively, but reduced N2O emissions and N leaching by 14.9% and 10.9%, respectively. Biochar application also increased the abundance of soil denitrifying/nitrifying genes (amoA, narG, nirS/nirK+S, and nosZ), proportion of N2 fixation bacteria, and N‐acetyl‐glucosaminidase activity by 18.6%–87.6%. Soil NO3‐ content was positively correlated with AOA‐amoA abundance, and soil N2O emission was positively correlated with the relative abundance of genes (e.g., amoA, narG, and nirS/nirK) involved in N2O production. Furthermore, long‐term biochar application tended to increase AOB‐amoA and nirK+S abundance, especially soil N2O emission and N leaching. Overall, the findings of this study indicated that biochar application accelerated microbially mediated N‐cycling processes under field conditions, thereby enhancing soil N availability and plant productivity. However, long‐term biochar application may increase N losses. Therefore, future studies should be conducted to examine the effect of long‐term biochar application on the soil N cycle and the underlying microbial mechanisms.

BackgroundHuman wellbeing has been linked with lifestyle factors such as physical activity, diet balance, sleep quality, depression, and anxiety. However, few studies illustrate the relationship between such lifestyle factors and HPV infection. In this study, we investigated the association between lifestyle factors, age, disease status and HPV infection.Participants and methodsParticipants were recruited through a digital eHealth platform in Shenzhen, Mainland China. Both lifestyle factors and cervicovaginal mucus (CVM) samples to test for HPV outcomes were collected from each participant as a cross-sectional study. In addition, the eHealth platform recorded age and current or history diseases, which were adjusted to apply for both univariable and multivariable logistic regression. Furthermore, lifestyle factors were categorized as different levels to conduct stratification analysis.ResultsWe recruited 149 HPV positive and 346 HPV negative participants through HPV detection. Physical activity and diet balance were significantly associated with HPV infection in lifestyle factors (P values < 0.001) after adjusting for age and current or history diseases. However, stratified analysis showed three factors were insignificant for HPV infection – namely, sleep quality, depression, and anxiety. Most HPV infections involved a sole HPV serotype (83%), and diet balance was the most significant difference between sole and multiple HPV infections.ConclusionsAmong lifestyle factors, physical inactivity or diet imbalance can significantly increase HPV infection risk. In particular, diet balance might be related to the number of HPV serotypes. Our results suggest that exercising and regulating diet may reduce the risk of HPV infection.

This experiment aimed to study the effects of different proportions of Amaranthus hypochondriacus stem and leaf powder (AHSL) on the growth performance, apparent nutrient digestibility, carcass traits, meat quality, and blood biochemical parameters of broilers from day 1 to day 42. The experiment utilized a single-factor experimental design, with a total of 216 one-day-old male broilers (Ross 308) randomly assigned to three dietary treatment groups (eight replicate cages of nine birds per cage). The dietary treatments included a control diet, a 3% AHSL diet and a 6% AHSL diet for days 0–21. Then, the 3% and 6% AHSL diets were changed to 5% and 10% AHSL for days 22–42. The results showed that the inclusion levels of AHSL did not affect growth performance, carcass traits, or meat quality on days 21 and 42 (p > 0.05). However, the inclusion levels of AHSL decreased the apparent nutrient digestibility (AND) of dry matter (DM) (p ˂ 0.001) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) (p ˂ 0.001) and increased the serum concentration of phosphorus (p ˂ 0.001) on day 21. On day 42, the inclusion levels of AHSL decreased the AND of DM (p = 0.025) and NDF content (p ˂ 0.001), but increased the AND of crude protein (CP) (p = 0.004). In particular, the diet containing 10% AHSL significantly increased the serum enzyme activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (p = 0.046) and the serum concentration of total protein (TP) (p ˂ 0.001) on day 42. Overall, AHSL can be used as a new and effective feed ingredient in broiler diets. It can replace part of the corn–soybean meal diet without any adverse effects, which is beneficial for conserving feed resources. Additionally, AHSL can be included at a level of up to 10% during the broiler growth period.

Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted to investigate the hot tensile deformation behavior of 6061 aluminum alloy under various temperatures and strain rates. Fields−Backofen equation was employed to establish the constitutive model of 6061 aluminum alloy, which was used to construct the finite element model for multi-bosses formed by plate forging process at elevated temperature. In the combination of numerical simulations and experimental tests including micro-hardness and electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) examination, the influence of two main process parameters, namely deformation temperature and counter-punch force, on the boss deformation and microscopic characteristics of multi-bosses formed at elevated temperature was discussed. The results show that the constitutive equation adopted is adequate to predict the deformation behavior in the plate forging process. While a higher temperature can improve the formability due to the reduction of plastic deformation resistance, a higher counter-punch load is favorable to increase the boss height and risk of fracture around the punch radius at the same time. In addition, it is favorable to promote recrystallization and fabricate the cylindrical component with a more homogeneous microstructure at a higher deformation temperature. From a comprehensive consideration, the 623 K is taken as the optimized deformation temperature for the selected 6061 aluminum alloy.

To investigate the responses of amino acid metabolism in portal-drained viscera (PDV), liver, and mammary glands (MGs) to a graded gradual decrease of post-ruminal Lys supply, four multi-catheterized lactating goats were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square experiment. Goats were fasted for 12 h and then received a 33-h abomasal infusion of an amino acid mixture and glucose. Treatments consisted of a graded decrease of Lys content in the infusate to 100 (complete), 60, 30, or 0% as in casein. Lys-removed infusions decreased the production of milk, milk protein, fat, and lactose linearly and also decreased arterial Lys concentrations linearly (p < 0.05). Net PDV uptake decreased linearly (p < 0.05) with decreasing PDV loss ratio (p < 0.05). Although liver removal of Lys decreased linearly (p < 0.05), the removal ratio relative to portal absorption changed small, which was about 10% in all four treatments. Reduced Lys supply resulted in a linear decrease in the utilization of Lys in the peripheral tissues (except mammary, p < 0.05) and the release of more Lys in MGs. Although net mammary uptake of Lys declined linearly (p < 0.05), lactating goats can partially offset the negative effect of decreased circulating Lys concentrations by increasing mammary affinity (p < 0.05) and increasing mammary blood flow (p < 0.05). Graded removal of Lys from the infusate linearly decreased mammary uptake-to-output ratios of Lys (p < 0.05) suggesting that mammary catabolism of Lys decreased. Meanwhile, the treatments linearly increased circulating concentrations of glucagon and linearly decreased prolactin (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the results of the present study indicated that there were several mechanisms used to mitigate a Lys deficiency, including reduced catabolism of Lys in PDV and peripheral tissues (including MGs) and linearly increased mammary blood flow and mammary affinity together with increased mammary uptake and U:O of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA). Given these changes, the decline in milk protein production could be attributed to the combined effect of mass action with Lys and hormonal status.

Vaginal microbiota (VMB) is associated with changes in Human papilloma virus (HPV) status, which consequently influences the risk of cervical cancer. This association was often confounded by personal risk factors. This pilot research aimed to explore the relationship between vaginal microbiota, personal risk factors and their interactions with HPV status conversion to identify the vaginal microbiota that was associated with HPV clearance under heterogeneous personal risk factors. A total of 38 women participated by self-collecting a cervicovaginal mucus (CVM) sample that was sent for metagenomics sequencing. Most of the participants also filled in personal risk factors questionnaire through an eHealth platform and authorized the use of their previous HPV genotyping results stored in this eHealth platform. Based on the two HPV results, the participants were grouped into three cohorts, namely HPV negative, HPV persistent infection, and HPV status conversion. The relative abundance of VMB and personal factors were compared among these three cohorts. A correlation investigation was performed between VMB and the significant personal factors to characterize a robustness of the panel for HPV status change using R programming. At baseline, 12 participants were HPV-negative, and 22 were HPV-positive. Within one year, 18 women remained HPV-positive, 12 were HPV-negative and 4 participants showed HPV clearance. The factors in the eHealth questionnaire were systematically evaluated which identified several factors significantly associated with persistent HPV infection, including age, salary, history of reproductive tract infection, and the total number of sexual partners. Concurrent vaginal microbiome samples suggest that a candidate biomarker panel consisting of Lactobacillus gasseri, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Timona prevotella bacteria, which may be associated with HPV clearance. This pilot study indicates a stable HPV status-related vaginal microbe environment. To establish a robust biomarker panel for clinical use, larger cohorts will be recruited into follow-up studies.

With the increasing number of underground structures traversing the surface structure, the surface and underground structures interact with each other during earthquakes, thus affecting the seismic response of the interaction system. Based on this idea, the dynamic interaction system of a tunnel-soil-surface structure is designed. The seismic responses such as acceleration, strain, and interlayer displacement angle are analyzed, and the vibration characteristics and laws of the interaction system under different seismic loads are studied through the shaking table test. The results show that the type of seismic wave has a significant impact on the seismic response of the system, in which the dynamic response of the surface structure and soil is more sensitive to the seismic wave with rich low-frequency components. The acceleration response of soil near the tunnel-surface structure area is stronger than that of soil far away from the interaction area. During earthquakes, the maximum strain of the deep tunnel appears in the region of 45° between the two sides of the lining and the vertical symmetry axis, whereas the maximum strain of the shallow tunnel close to the surface structure is different from that of the deep tunnel. For the surface structure, with the input peak acceleration increasing, the weak layer of the surface structure moves down, and the interlayer displacement angle of the middle and lower layers is significantly larger. The research results have certain reference significance for exploring the seismic response law of a tunnel-soil-surface structure interaction system.

When depositing films on a complex workpiece surface by magnetron sputtering, the shadow effect occurs and causes the columnar structure to tilt toward the substrate owing to the oblique incident angle of the plasma flux, affecting the microstructure and properties of the films. Improving the surface diffusion could alleviate the shadow effect, whereas changing the energy of the deposited particles could improve surface diffusion. Different substrate conductivities could affect the energy of the deposited particles when they reach the substrate. In this study, Si (semiconductor) and SiO2 (insulator) sheets are mounted on the inner surface of a hemispherical workpiece, and Ti films with different thicknesses (adjusted by the deposition time) are deposited on the inner surface of the hemispherical workpiece by direct current magnetron sputtering. The results show that there is a threshold thickness and incident angle before the films are affected by the shadow effect. The threshold could be affected by the film thickness, the incident angle, and the conductivity of the substrate. The threshold would decrease as the film thickness or incidence angle increased or the conductivity of the substrate decreased. When the film thickness or incident angle does not reach the threshold, the film would not be affected by the shadow effect. In addition, the film deposited later would tilt the vertical columnar structure of the film deposited earlier. Owing to the different conductivities, the shadow effect manifest earlier for Ti films deposited on the insulator SiO2 than for films deposited on the semiconductor Si when the film thickness is >500 nm.

The dynamic marine atmospheric corrosion behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloy was investigated in situ exposed on the deck of marine scientific research vessel for 1 year. The marine scientific research vessel carried out five voyages from the coast of China to the western Pacific Ocean, while the navigation track and environmental data were collected and analyzed. The corrosion rate and characteristics were evaluated by using weight loss tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical measurements. The corrosion rate from weight loss values was 52.23 μm∙y−1 after exposure for 1 year, which was several times higher than that of the static field exposure test in marine atmospheric environment of other reported literature. The main corrosion products were Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·4H2O, MgCO3·3H2O and Mg2(OH)3Cl·4H2O. The corrosion was initiated from pitting corrosion and evolved into general corrosion gradually. The serious corrosion maybe due to the harsh corrosive environment with alternating changes in temperature and relative humidity caused by multiple longitude and latitude changes, and particularly high deposition rate of chloride during voyage, which was nearly twenty times that on the coast of China. This study provides effective data for the application of magnesium alloy in shipboard aircraft and other equipment, and provides a reference for indoor simulation experiments.

Non-uniform axial deformation and tube wall thinning are the main issues restricting the further development of the tube electromagnetic bulging technology. Aiming at overcoming these issues, a tube electromagnetic bulging method based on convex driving coil is proposed in this paper. An electromagnetic-structure coupling model of the tube electromagnetic expansion process is established and the influence of detailed convex coil parameters on radial and axial Lorentz forces are analyzed. Results show that with the new proposed method, the homogeneous length of the tube axial deformation is 4.7 times that of the expansion loading with conventional driving coil. Meanwhile, the issue of tube wall thinning in the conventional electromagnetic bulging method is restrained due to the produced axial electromagnetic force using the proposed convex coil. The proposed tube electromagnetic bulging based on convex coil can effectively overcome the issues currently exist in the conventional tube electromagnetic bulging and promote wide industrial application of the electromagnetic forming technology.

In the conventional electromagnetic tube expansion, tube wall thickness tends to decrease significantly while the workpiece is expanded. This paper is aimed at introducing a new technique using three-coil electromagnetic tube bulging with axial compression as an innovative solution for this issue. To validate the feasibility of the proposed technique and investigate the electromagnetic force distribution along the workpiece, COMSOL software is used to construct a detailed finite element analysis model for the proposed electromagnetic coupling model. Results show that the ratio of the axial and the radial electromagnetic forces increases linearly with the increase of the height and the outer diameter of the top and bottom coils. Furthermore, the tube deformation profile and the wall thickness are compared with two different coil structures. Comparison analysis reveals that for the same axial to radial electromagnetic forces ratio, the effect of prohibiting the wall thickness reduction using different coil structures is quite similar. The new method is expected to have a good potential in enhancing the tube-forming performance.

Electromagnetic forming is a well-developed high-rate forming technology. An important issue of this technology is the temperature rise of the driving coil, which can adversely affect the coil service life. This paper is aimed at addressing this issue through detailed investigation of an electromagnetic forming based on half-wave current method. On the basis of the principle of electromagnetic forming and finite element modelling, this paper compares and analyzes the temperature rise profile of the driving coil along with the forming efficiency of the workpiece in the traditional discharge, the crowbar discharge and the half-wave current discharge models. Results show that with the same system discharge parameters, the half-wave current method can reduce the Joule heating of the driving coil from 1.82kJ to 1.3kJ, which effectively reduces the temperature rise of the driving coil. At the same time, the workpiece forming efficiency is improved from 9.6% to 11.8%. Thus, the half-wave current method can solve the issue of the temperature rise of the driving coil to some extent and promote the process of industrial applications of the electromagnetic forming technology.

In the conventional electromagnetic tube expansion, axial distribution of the electromagnetic force is not uniform along the workpiece. This results in uneven axial deformation of the deformed tube and restricts the full industrial implementation of this technology. In an attempt to overcome this issue, this article proposes a new method based on dual-coil electromagnetic tube compression. In this regard, an electromagnetic-structure finite element coupling model is developed to emulate the real electromagnetic tube compression process. Influence of the proposed dual-coil structure parameters on the electromagnetic force distribution is analyzed. Results show that the proposed dual-coil electromagnetic tube compression method can effectively solve the problem of uneven axial deformation in the conventional electromagnetic tube compression. The proposed method is expected to promote wide industrial applications of the electromagnetic tube forming technology.

Purpose. Studies have found that vitamin D supplementation may improve blood lipids in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome, but the results are controversial, so this study will further analyze the effect of vitamin D supplementation on blood lipids in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome. Methods. PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, and Wanfang databases were searched up to May 2020, to identify randomized controlled trials of the effect of vitamin D supplementation on blood lipids in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was applied to assess the risk of bias, and RevMan5.3 software was used for statistical analysis. Results. Ten studies were included in this study, including 543 subjects. The results of the meta-analysis showed that, compared with placebo, vitamin D supplementation can significantly reduce total cholesterol level (WMD = –11.32, 95% CI = [–14.51, –8.41], P

In the conventional electromagnetic tube expansion, the end effects generated by the conventional helix coil may lead to inhomogeneous tube deformation in the axial direction. This paper is aimed at overcoming this issue by proposing a new concave coil structure to replace the helix coil currently used by the industry practice to generate a radial electromagnetic force on the tube. The proposed concave coil is expected to reinforce the electromagnetic force distribution profile and, hence, improving the axial inhomogeneous deformation of the tube. In this context, a new R-L criterion of deformation uniformity is first proposed. Second, an electromagnetic-structural coupling finite element model is established to investigate the relationship between the distribution of electromagnetic force generated by the concave coil and the uniformity of the tube under various voltage levels. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through a series of experimental and simulation analyses. Furthermore, based on the characteristics of the electromagnetic tube expansion, a modified multilayer concave coil structure is proposed to overcome the axial inhomogeneous deformation of long tubes.

The achievement of superamphiphobic material with ultralow sliding angles is a highly worthwhile and challenging task because the current artificial superhydrophobicity can be easily contaminated and wetted by low surface tension liquids. Herein, we construct superamphiphobic 5083 aluminum alloy surface through a facile strategy including sono-assisted HCl etching, boiling H2O treatment and POTS grafting. Micro-nano dual scale hierarchical structure was achieved, attributing to air cushion formation and Cassie contacts. The as-prepared superamphiphobic HCl-H2O-POTS AA5083 surface has a wide range of liquids repellency to water, glycerol, ethylene glycol, peanut oil and even n-hexadecane (surface tension: 27.5 mN·m−1). The superamphiphobic surface also possesses outstanding self-cleaning ability for contaminants and chemical stability for liquid droplets with different pH values. All these advantages will endow the superamphiphobic HCl-H2O-POTS surface with broad applications prospects, including automobile, aerospace, military and marine industries. Biochar addition is a promising solution to improve soil nitrogen (N) availability and enhance crop productivity. However, a comprehensive understanding of the impact of soil N dynamics on crop productivity under biochar addition remains elusive. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis from 93 peer-reviewed field experiments to synthesize the linkage of crop productivity to soil N dynamics under biochar addition. The results show that biochar addition significantly enhanced crop productivity by 12.8% and plant N uptake (PNU) by 22.6%, and there was a strongly positive relationship between crop productivity and PNU. Biochar addition also significantly increased the contents of soil total N (TN), inorganic N (IN), microbial biomass N (MBN), and biological N2 fixation (BNF) by 3.34–18.7%, but reduced nitrous oxide (N2O) emission by 15.9%. Further analysis with the aggregated boosted tree model indicated that the TN and BNF played the most important roles in biochar-induced change in crop productivity. However, while crop productivity was positively correlated with TN under biochar addition, it showed a negative correlation with BNF. These findings suggest that biochar addition could enhance crop growth and productivity through increasing the soil N resource and N uptake, but this was not true for some N2-fixing crops, probably because they were usually constrained by nutrients other than N.

People prefer to store important, private, and sensitive information on smartphones for convenient storage and fast access, such as photos and emails. To prevent information leakage and smartphone illegal access, we propose a novel sensor-based continuous authentication system, SensorCA, for continuously monitoring users' behavior patterns, by leveraging the accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer ubiquitously built-in smartphones. We are among the first to exploit the data augmentation approach of the rotation, which creates additional data by applying it on the collected raw data and improves the robustness of the proposed system. With the augmented data, SensorCA extracts sensor-based features in both time and frequency domains within a time window, then utilizes the kernel ridge regression with truncated Gaussian radial basis function kernel (KRR-TRBF) to train the classifier, and finally authenticates the current user as a legitimate user or an impostor. We evaluate the authentication performance of SensorCA in terms of different classifiers including KRR-TRBF, KRR-POLY, and SVM-RBF, and the data augmentation approach rotation on KRR-TRBF6 and SVM-RBF. The experimental results show that under the KRR-TRBF6 classifier, SensorCA reaches the lowest median equal error rate of 3.0% with dataset size 8000 and consumes the shortest training time of 0.054 seconds with dataset size 1000.

Abstract Background Photosynthetic oleaginous microalgae are considered promising feedstocks for biofuels. The marine microalga, Nannochloropsis oceanica, has been attracting ever-increasing interest because of its fast growth, high triacylglycerol (TAG) content, and available genome sequence and genetic tools. Diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT) catalyzes the last and committed step of TAG biosynthesis in the acyl-CoA-dependent pathway. Previous studies have identified 13 putative DGAT-encoding genes in the genome of N. oceanica, but the functional role of DGAT genes, especially type-I DGAT (DGAT1), remains ambiguous. Results Nannochloropsis oceanica IMET1 possesses two DGAT1 genes: NoDGAT1A and NoDGAT1B. Functional complementation demonstrated the capability of NoDGAT1A rather than NoDGAT1B to restore TAG synthesis in a TAG-deficient yeast strain. In vitro DGAT assays revealed that NoDGAT1A preferred saturated/monounsaturated acyl-CoAs and eukaryotic diacylglycerols (DAGs) for TAG synthesis, while NoDGAT1B had no detectable enzymatic activity. Assisted with green fluorescence protein (GFP) fusion, fluorescence microscopy analysis indicated the localization of NoDGAT1A in the chloroplast endoplasmic reticulum (cER) of N. oceanica. NoDGAT1A knockdown caused ~25% decline in TAG content upon nitrogen depletion, accompanied by the reduced C16:0, C18:0, and C18:1 in TAG sn-1/sn-3 positions and C18:1 in the TAG sn-2 position. NoDGAT1A overexpression, on the other hand, led to ~39% increase in TAG content upon nitrogen depletion, accompanied by the enhanced C16:0 and C18:1 in the TAG sn-1/sn-3 positions and C18:1 in the TAG sn-2 position. Interestingly, NoDGAT1A overexpression also promoted TAG accumulation (by ~2.4-fold) under nitrogen-replete conditions without compromising cell growth, and TAG yield of the overexpression line reached 0.49 g L−1 at the end of a 10-day batch culture, 47% greater than that of the control line. Conclusions Taken together, our work demonstrates the functional role of NoDGAT1A and sheds light on the underlying mechanism for the biosynthesis of various TAG species in N. oceanica. NoDGAT1A resides likely in cER and prefers to transfer C16 and C18 saturated/monounsaturated fatty acids to eukaryotic DAGs for TAG assembly. This work also provides insights into the rational genetic engineering of microalgae by manipulating rate-limiting enzymes such as DGAT to modulate TAG biosynthesis and fatty acid composition for biofuel production.

A variational principle is established for a moving jet in the electrospinning process to study the vibration property of the jet. A higher accelerated velocity and lower vibration frequency are needed in a multi-needle electrospinning system. This paper introduces an auxiliary electrode to enhance the electric strength, and a numerical analysis is carried out to design an optimal electric field.

We propose a tunable optical setup to engineer topologically nontrivial flat bands in twisted bilayer graphene under circularly polarized light. Using both analytical and numerical calculations, we demonstrate that nearly flat bands can be engineered at small twist angles near the magic angles of the static system. The flatness and the gaps between these bands can be tuned optically by varying laser frequency and amplitude. We study the effects of interlayer hopping variations on Floquet flat bands and find that changes associated with lattice relaxation favor their formation. Furthermore, we find that, once formed, the flat bands carry nonzero Chern numbers. We show that at currently known values of parameters, such topological flat bands can be realized using circularly polarized UV laser light. Thus, our work opens the way to creating optically tunable, strongly correlated topological phases of electrons in moiré superlattices.

Objective This study was performed to investigate the effects of age and sex on 10 salivary steroid hormones and analyze the correlations between salivary and plasma hormones. Methods The concentrations of 10 salivary steroid hormones in 1090 Chinese adult volunteers were examined using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry, and a related investigation was performed on the concentrations of salivary hormones in this population. Results The concentrations of androstenedione (A4), 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP), aldosterone (ALD), cortisone (COR), corticosterone (CORT), cortisol (F), progesterone (P), and testosterone were significantly different between men and women (Student’s t-test). Differences in 17-OHP and ALD concentrations were highly significant between women in the follicular and luteal phases of their menstrual cycle (Student’s t-test). Five salivary steroid hormones (17-OHP, A4, CORT, COR, and F) significantly decreased with increasing age (Kruskal–Wallis test). A high linear correlation between salivary and plasma 17-OHP, P, A4, and F were observed with obvious sex-related differences (Pearson’s correlation, r > 0.7). Conclusions Our results provide important knowledge regarding the descriptive characteristics of salivary hormones in relation to age and sex and their correlations with plasma hormones.

Objective We compared the salivary nontargeted metabolite profiles between patients with recurrent aphthous ulcer (RAU) and healthy individuals to investigate the metabolic alterations associated with RAU. Methods Saliva samples were collected from 45 patients with RAU and 49 healthy individuals, and the salivary metabolites were quantified using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. The metabolomic profiles were then analyzed using multivariate and univariate statistical methods, and enrichment of the metabolites in various biological pathways was assessed. Results In total, 206 significant differentiating metabolites (Wilcoxon test, false discovery rate [FDR] of 0.9). Principal component analysis and partial least-squares discriminant analysis revealed metabolic perturbations involving RAU, and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis with several metabolites showed good diagnostic ability for RAU. Conclusions The results of this study indicate that patients with RAU are characterized by metabolic imbalances. Psychogenic factors, endocrinopathies, and immunosuppression may contribute to the onset of RAU.

In big-data-driven traffic flow prediction systems, the robustness of prediction performance depends on accuracy and timeliness. This paper presents a new MapReduce-based nearest neighbor (NN) approach for traffic flow prediction using correlation analysis (TFPC) on a Hadoop platform. In particular, we develop a real-time prediction system including two key modules, i.e., offline distributed training (ODT) and online parallel prediction (OPP). Moreover, we build a parallel $k$ -nearest neighbor optimization classifier, which incorporates correlation information among traffic flows into the classification process. Finally, we propose a novel prediction calculation method, combining the current data observed in OPP and the classification results obtained from large-scale historical data in ODT, to generate traffic flow prediction in real time. The empirical study on real-world traffic flow big data using the leave-one-out cross validation method shows that TFPC significantly outperforms four state-of-the-art prediction approaches, i.e., autoregressive integrated moving average, Naïve Bayes, multilayer perceptron neural networks, and NN regression, in terms of accuracy, which can be improved 90.07% in the best case, with an average mean absolute percent error of 5.53%. In addition, it displays excellent speedup, scaleup, and sizeup.

A high-strength AZ80 Mg alloy was prepared through multi-direction forging, thermal extrusion, and peak-aged heat treatment. The microstructure, crystallographic orientation and corrosion performance of extrusion-direction, transverse-direction, and normal-direction specimens were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, and atomic force microscopy, respectively. Experimental results showed that crystallographic orientation significantly influenced the corrosion performance of AZ80 Mg alloy. Corrosion rates largely increased with decreased (0 0 0 1) crystallographic plane intensity, whereas the (1 0 −1 0) and (2 −1 −1 0) crystallographic plane intensities increased. This study showed that the corrosion rates of alloy can be modified to some extent by controlling texture, thereby promoting the applications of high-strength AZ80 Mg alloys in the aerospace and national-defense fields.

The inhibition behavior of polyaspartic acid (PASP) as an environment-friendly corrosion inhibitor for WE43 magnesium alloy was investigated in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution by means for EIS measurement, potentiodynamic polarization curve, and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that PASP can inhibit the corrosion of WE43 magnesium alloy. The maximum inhibition efficiency is achieved when PASP concentration is 400 ppm in this study.

Frequent pattern mining is an effective approach for spatiotemporal association analysis of mobile trajectory big data in data-driven intelligent transportation systems. While existing parallel algorithms have been successfully applied to frequent pattern mining of large-scale trajectory data, two major challenges are how to overcome the inherent defects of Hadoop to cope with taxi trajectory big data including massive small files and how to discover the implicitly spatiotemporal frequent patterns with MapReduce. To conquer these challenges, this paper presents a MapReduce-based Parallel Frequent Pattern growth (MR-PFP) algorithm to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of taxi operating using large-scale taxi trajectories with massive small file processing strategies on a Hadoop platform. More specifically, we first implement three methods, that is, Hadoop Archives (HAR), CombineFileInputFormat (CFIF), and Sequence Files (SF), to overcome the existing defects of Hadoop and then propose two strategies based on their performance evaluations. Next, we incorporate SF into Frequent Pattern growth (FP-growth) algorithm and then implement the optimized FP-growth algorithm on a MapReduce framework. Finally, we analyze the characteristics of taxi operating in both spatial and temporal dimensions by MR-PFP in parallel. The results demonstrate that MR-PFP is superior to existing Parallel FP-growth (PFP) algorithm in efficiency and scalability.

This paper proposes a novel image region descriptor for face recognition, named kernel Gabor-based weighted region covariance matrix (KGWRCM). As different parts are different effectual in characterizing and recognizing faces, we construct a weighting matrix by computing the similarity of each pixel within a face sample to emphasize features. We then incorporate the weighting matrices into a region covariance matrix, named weighted region covariance matrix (WRCM), to obtain the discriminative features of faces for recognition. Finally, to further preserve discriminative features in higher dimensional space, we develop the kernel Gabor-based weighted region covariance matrix (KGWRCM). Experimental results show that the KGWRCM outperforms other algorithms including the kernel Gabor-based region covariance matrix (KGCRM).

Corrosion behavior of Mg-5Y-1.5Nd alloy was investigated after heat treatment. The microstructure and precipitation were studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The weight loss rates of different samples were arranged as T6-24 h>T6-6 h>T6-14 h>as-cast>T4. The open circuit potential (OCP) showed that T4 sample had a more positive potential than that of other samples. The potentiodynamic polarization curves showed that the T6-24 h sample had the highest corrosion current density of 245.362 μA·cm−2, whereas the T4 sample had the lowest at 52.164 μA·cm−2. The EIS results confirmed that the heat treatment reduced the corrosion resistance for Mg-5Y-1.5Nd alloy, because the precipitations acted as the cathode of electrochemical reactions to accelerate the corrosion process. The corrosion rates of different samples were mainly determined by the amount and distribution of the precipitations. The precipitations played dual roles that depended on the amount and distribution. The presence of the phase in the alloys could deteriorate the corrosion performance as it could act as an effective galvanic cathode. Otherwise, a fine and homogeneous phase appeared to be a better anticorrosion barrier.

Traffic subarea division is vital for traffic system management and traffic network analysis in intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). Since existing methods may not be suitable for big traffic data processing, this paper presents a MapReduce-based Parallel Three-Phase K-Means (Par3PKM) algorithm for solving traffic subarea division problem on a widely adopted Hadoop distributed computing platform. Specifically, we first modify the distance metric and initialization strategy of K-Means and then employ a MapReduce paradigm to redesign the optimized K-Means algorithm for parallel clustering of large-scale taxi trajectories. Moreover, we propose a boundary identifying method to connect the borders of clustering results for each cluster. Finally, we divide traffic subarea of Beijing based on real-world trajectory data sets generated by 12,000 taxis in a period of one month using the proposed approach. Experimental evaluation results indicate that when compared with K-Means, Par2PK-Means, and ParCLARA, Par3PKM achieves higher efficiency, more accuracy, and better scalability and can effectively divide traffic subarea with big taxi trajectory data.

The Mg-6%Al-3%Zn and Mg-6%Al-3%Zn-(1%, 1.5%, 2%)In alloys were prepared by melting and casting. Their microstructures were investigated via metallographic and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. Moreover, hydrogen evolution and electrochemical tests were carried out in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution aiming at identifying their corrosion mechanisms and discharge behaviors. The results suggested that indium exerts an improvement on both the corrosion rate and the discharge activity of Mg-Al-Zn alloy via the effects of grain refining, β-Mg17Al12 precipitation, dissolving-reprecipitation, and self-peeling. The Mg-6%Al-3%Zn-1.5%In alloy with the highest corrosion rate at free corrosion potential did not perform desirable discharge activity indicating that the barrier effect caused by the β-Mg17Al12 phase would have been enhanced under the conditions of anodic polarization. The Mg-6%Al-3%Zn-1.0%In alloy with a relative low corrosion rate and a high discharge activity is a promising anode material for both cathodic protection and chemical power source applications.
