A magnetic responsive composite was made from a sulfur-rich polymer and iron nanoparticles. Diverse applications in mercury remediation, microwave curing, and magnetic responsive actuators were demonstrated.

Hydrogen is a promising fossil-fuel alternative fuel owing to its environmentally neutral emissions and high energy density. However, the need for purified water and external power are critical hindrances to the implementation of hydrogen production. The present work demonstrates the potential to overcome these shortcomings through piezo-photocatalysis of seawater using defective BaTiO3–x (BTO) nanoparticles. This material was made piezoelectrically active by a straightforward annealing process under different atmospheres, including O2, N2, Ar, or H2, the latter of which caused Ti4+ ¿ Ti(4–x)+ multiple reductions and structural distortions that stabilize piezoelectric tetragonal domains. A suite of experimental techniques was employed to reveal the effects of reduction on the energy band structure. A substantial piezoelectric effect and the presence of self-polarization were confirmed by piezoresponse force microscopy, while simulation work clarified the role of vibrations on band bending deriving from the self-polarization. The hydrogen evolution through photocatalysis, piezocatalysis, and piezo-photocatalysis over the defective BaTiO3–x nanoparticles was characterized with deionized (DI) water, simulated seawater, and natural seawater. A promising HER with a rate of 132.4 µmol/g/h was achieved using DI water through piezo-photocatalysis without a cocatalyst. In contrast, a substantial HER rate of 48.7 µmol/g/h was obtained for natural seawater, despite the deleterious impact of dissolved ions. The present work offers new perspectives for large-scale green H2 production using abundant natural resources with a conventional piezoelectric material that is readily available but still affected by the ions dissolved in seawater.

Radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering allows the fabrication of TiO

Surface defects influence the dye adsorption on TiO2 used as a substrate in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In this study, we have used different Ar+ sputtering doses to create a controlled density of defects on a TiO2 surface exposed to different pre-heating temperatures in order to analyse the influence of defects on the N719 dye adsorption. TiO2 was pre-treated using two different treatments. The first treatment involved heating to 200 °C with subsequent sputtering at different doses. The second treatment included heating only, but at four different temperatures starting at 200 °C. After the pre-treatments, the TiO2 samples were immersed into an N719 dye solution for 24 hours at room temperature to dye the TiO2 substrates. The amount of Ti3+ surface defects introduced by the different pre-treatments and their influence on dye adsorption onto the TiO2 surface were examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and metastable induced electron spectroscopy (MIES). Neutral impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (NICISS) was used to determine the coverage of the TiO2 surface by adsorbed dye molecules. It was found that Ti3+ surface defects were formed by Ar+ sputtering but not by pre-treatment through heating alone. MIES analysis of the outer-most layer and density of states calculations show that the thiocyanate ligand of the N719 dye becomes directed away from the TiO2 surface. Both XPS and NICISS results indicate that the amount of adsorbed N719 dye decreases with increasing density of Ti3+ surface defects. Thus, the generation of surface defects reduces the ability of the TiO2 surface to adsorb the dye molecules. Heating alone as pre-treatment of the TiO2 substrates instead increases the dye adsorption, without causing detectable defects on the TiO2 surface.

Graphene supported transition metal clusters are of great interest for potential applications, such as catalysis, due to their unique properties. In this work, a simple approach to deposit Au101(PPh3)21Cl5 (Au101NC) on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) via an ex situ method is presented. Reduction of graphene oxide at native pH (pH ≈ 2) to rGO was performed under aqueous hydrothermal conditions. Decoration of rGO sheets with controlled content of 5 wt% Au was accomplished using only pre-synthesised Au101NC and rGO as precursors and methanol as solvent. High resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy indicated that the cluster size did not change upon deposition with an average diameter of 1.4 ± 0.4 nm. It was determined that the rGO reduction method was crucial to avoid agglomeration, with rGO reduced at pH ≈ 11 resulting in agglomeration. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to confirm the deposition of Au101NCs and show the presence of triphenyl phosphine ligands, which together with attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, advocates that the deposition of Au101NCs onto the surface of rGO was facilitated via non-covalent interactions with the phenyl groups of the ligands. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and thermogravimetric analysis were used to determine the gold loading and both agree with a gold loading of ca. 4.8–5 wt%. The presented simple and mild strategy demonstrates that good compatibility between size-specific phosphine protected gold clusters and rGO can prevent aggregation of the metal clusters. This work contributes towards producing an agglomeration-free synthesis of size-specific ligated gold clusters on rGO that could have wide range of applications.

Defects on perovskite surfaces acting as charge-carrier-traps are a key factor limiting the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here we studied the defect passivation effect of three bromide-containing alkylammonium organic cations with increasing alkyl-chain-length: n-butylammonium bromide, n-octylammonium bromide and n-dodecylammonium bromide on a perovskite composition with 1.72 eV bandgap. Long-alkyl-chain organic cations were found to have a greater passivation effect compared to their shorter counterparts due to greater reduction in surface defects and substantial changes in the electronic structure of the passivated perovskite films. The efficiency of 1.72 eV PSCs was improved to 19.1% with an excellent open-circuit-voltage of over 1280 mV. The long-alkyl-chain passivation significantly improved the moisture and light stability of PSCs as the unencapsulated devices retained >90% of the initial performance after 144 h at 70–85% relative-humidity and >93% of the initial performance after operating under light for 80 h. The study has paved the way for efficient and stable wide bandgap perovskite top cells used in perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells.

Stable doping of indacenodithieno[3,2-b]thiophene (IDTT) structures enables easy color tuning and significant improvement in the charge storage capacity of electrochromic polymers, making use of their full potential as electrochromic supercapacitors and in other emerging hybrid applications. Here, the IDTT structure is copolymerized with four different donor-acceptor-donor (DAD) units, with subtle changes in their electron-donating and electron-withdrawing characters, so as to obtain four different donor-acceptor copolymers. The polymers attain important form factor requirements for electrochromic supercapacitors: desired switching between achromatic black and transparent states (L*a*b* 45.9, -3.1, -4.2/86.7, -2.2, and -2.7 for PIDTT-TBT), high optical contrast (72% for PIDTT-TBzT), and excellent electrochemical redox stability (Ired/Iox ca. 1.0 for PIDTT-EBE). Poly[indacenodithieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,8-diyl-alt-4,7-bis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-2-(2-hexyldecyl)-2H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazole-7,7'-diyl] (PIDTT-EBzE) stands out as delivering simultaneously a high contrast (69%) and doping level (>100%) and specific capacitance (260 F g-1). This work introduces IDTT-based polymers as bifunctional electro-optical materials for potential use in color-tailored, color-indicating, and self-regulating smart energy systems.

Drylands under pastoral land use are considered one of the most vulnerable social-ecological systems to global climate change, but the abilities of different adaptive strategies to adapt to the impacts of different extreme weather events on herders’ livelihood have received little attention in the drylands. Herders on the Mongolian Plateau (MP; including Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China and Mongolia), have had a long history of adapting climatic variability and extreme weather events. However, it is unclear how changes such as increased levels of infrastructure and market integration affect the ability of herders to achieve the two key livelihood objectives: the minimisation of the death and abortion rates of livestock in the winter. Here, we used remotely sensed and household survey data to map, model and explore the climate exposure and sensitivity of herders in the settled area (Inner Mongolia of China) and nomadic area (Mongolia) in the winter of 2012–2013. We aimed to quantify the multi-scaled characteristics of both climate exposure and sensitivity through the lens of key adaptive strategies utilized by herders. Our results showed that the higher levels of infrastructure and market integration, and the lower levels of remoteness on the MP did not increase the herders' ability to achieve the two key livelihood objectives. Our results also suggested that exposure to the snow that is comparatively greater than the long-term average (cumulative exposure) may be more important in determining the social-ecological vulnerability than absolute exposure. We suggested that neither the risk management strategies available to these herders, nor the demographic variables, could compensate for the mode of production governing the pastoral systems. Our study could provide further evidence for the complex and scaled nature of climate exposure and sensitivity, and the results imply that any analysis of the relationship between exposure, sensitivity and vulnerability of pastoral households to climate change in the drylands will require a multi-scaled and interdisciplinary approach.

Refereed/Peer-reviewed The mechanisms leading to corrosion in stainless steel containments for thermal energy storage through phase change materials, such as carbonates and chlorides, are crucial for understanding the degradation of these steel alloys. A comprehensive study of this area will allow for down-selection of materials suitable for solar thermal energy storage (TES) operation at an elevated temperature range. Samples of stainless steel (SS) 316L were subjected to a cyclic heat environment of 550–750 °C in air and argon headspace environments, in the presence of a carbonate salt phase change material (PCM). A series of complementary microscopy, spectroscopy and diffractometry analytical techniques were applied to the corroded SS316L. Corrosion rate, interface formation and chemical products with respect to thermal cycling are presented with associated degradation mechanism explained and comparisons are made among different gas environments and varied immersion conditions. In the PCM under ambient air conditions, steel surfaces were mainly corroded by the penetration of oxidants from air, such as H2O or O2, along grain boundaries. SS316L samples demonstrated more severe degradation when exposed to air with a small fraction of PCM vapour present compared to when they were exposed to liquid or solid PCM. Cycling in Ar resulted in less corrosion in samples as opposed to when they were exposed to an air environment. In an Ar environment corrosion is driven via the formation of chromite, while the SS316L showed a less degradation when exposed to Ar with a small fraction of PCM vapour compared to when it was immersed in PCM. The mechanisms for degradation in air and in Ar are common in that the corrosion products of Cr and Ni dissolve in the PCM thus removing any layer that could protect against corrosion. The present study provides insight into corrosion of stainless-steel when exposed to carbonate salts, in air and inert gas environments, and contributes to down-selection of materials for solar thermal energy storage.

The properties of semiconductor surfaces can be modified by the deposition of metal clusters consisting of a few atoms. The properties of metal clusters and of cluster-modified surfaces depend on the number of atoms forming the clusters. Deposition of clusters with a monodisperse size distribution thus allows tailoring of the surface properties for technical applications. However, it is a challenge to retain the size of the clusters after their deposition due to the tendency of the clusters to agglomerate. Platinum single-atom catalysts (PtSACs) on 3D support are emerging as the new frontier in catalysis due to their atom-economy, outstanding performance, and the advantage to bridge the gap between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Here we report on a simple, single-step electrochemical grafting attachment of a metal-selective ligand, 2,6:2’,2”-terpyridine, and the synthesis of platinum single-atom electrocatalyst via metal uptake from aqueous salt solution. At an ultra-low loading of 0.26 ±0.02 μgcm-2 of platinum, the single-atom catalysts supported on porous 3D carbon cloth electrode via chemical bonding revealed higher mass activity ratios, up to 83.0 at η = 50 mV/RHE, compared to the commercial catalyst 20 % Pt/C. Using hydrogen binding energy as the descriptor for efficiency, density functional theory calculations show that promoting hydrogen evolution using terpyridine-Pt proceeds when the catalyst is in a 2+ charge state and with a single hydroxy co-ligand attached to Pt catalytic center. Calculations predict an HER overpotential of about 0.28 V. The electro-grafted terpyridine ligand proved to act as effective scavenger for leached platinum from the counter electrode during extended operational hours. The method to make the PtSAC is facile, non-hazardous and versatile without involving any elaborate pre- and/or post-treatment steps and, the cost of the added platinum to the ligand is only 0.1 US$m-2.

A polymer made from equal masses of sulfur and canola oil was carbonised at 600 °C for 30 minutes. The resulting material exhibited improved uptake of mercury from water compared to the polymer. The carbonisation could also be done after using the polymer to clean up oil spills, which suprisingly improved mercury uptake to levels rivaling commercial carbons.

Dimensional engineering of perovskite solar cells has attracted significant research attention recently because of the potential to improve both device performance and stability. Here, a novel 2D passivation scheme for 3D perovskite solar cells is demonstrated using a mixed cation composition of 2D perovskite based on two different isomers of butylammonium iodide. The dual-cation 2D perovskite outperforms its single cation 2D counterparts in surface passivation quality, resulting in devices with an impressive open-circuit voltage of 1.21 V for a perovskite composition with an optical bandgap of ≈1.6 eV, and a champion efficiency of 23.27%. Using a combination of surface elemental analysis and valence electron spectra decomposition, it is shown that an in situ interaction between the 2D perovskite precursor and the 3D active layer results in surface intermixing of 3D and 2D perovskite phases, providing an effective combination of defect passivation and enhanced charge transfer, despite the semi-insulating nature of the 2D perovskite phase. The demonstration of the synergistic interaction of multiple organic spacer cations in a 2D passivation layer offers new opportunities for further enhancement of device performance with mixed dimensional perovskite solar cells.

We have developed two series of p-type conjugated polymers based on poly[2,3-bis-(3-octyloxyphenyl)quinoxaline-5,8-diyl-alt-thiophene-2,5-diyl] (TQ1) polymeric backbone utilizing polar pendant groups, i.e., tertiary amine and pyridine, to achieve switchable solubility in water and ethanol. By balancing the ratio between polar and non-polar side-groups, we could combine green-solvent processability with the manufacturing of functional photovoltaic devices. Due to the unavailability of water/alcohol soluble acceptors, the photovoltaic performance of these new polymers was evaluated using organic solvent by incorporating PC61BM. For water/alcohol soluble partial amine-based polymers, we achieve a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ∼0.8% whereas alcohol soluble partial pyridine-based polymers show enhanced PCE of ∼1.3% with inverted device structure. We propose that the enhancement in PCE is a result of the reduction in amino-group content and the lower basicity of pyridine, both of which decrease the interaction between functionalized polymers with the anode interface material and reduce the miscibility of the donor and acceptor. Further improvement of the photovoltaic performance, in particular the open-circuit voltage (Voc), was achieved by using an anode buffer layer to mitigate the unfavorable interaction of the amino/pyridine groups with the MoO3 electrode. Our work demonstrated the possibility of substituent modification for conjugated polymers using tertiary amine and pyridine groups to achieve water/alcohol soluble and functional donor materials.

SUMMARY The M. tuberculosis (Mtb) ClpB is a protein disaggregase that helps to rejuvenate the bacterial cell. DnaK is a protein foldase that can function alone, but it can also bind to the ClpB hexamer to physically couple protein disaggregation with protein refolding, although the molecular mechanism is not well understood. Here, we report the cryo-EM analysis of the Mtb ClpB-DnaK bi-chaperone in the presence of ATPγS and a protein substrate. We observe three ClpB conformations in the presence of DnaK, identify a conserved TGIP loop linking the oligonucleotide/oligosaccharide-binding domain and the nucleotide-binding domain that is important for ClpB function, derive the interface between the regulatory middle domain of the ClpB and the DnaK nucleotide-binding domain, and find that DnaK binding stabilizes, but does not bend or tilt, the ClpB middle domain. We propose a model for the synergistic actions of aggregate dissolution and refolding by the Mtb ClpB-DnaK bi-chaperone system., Graphical abstract, In brief Yin et al. use cryo-EM to analyze the structure of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis ClpB-DnaK bi-chaperone system. They find that the Mtb ClpB middle domain does not bend or tilt when interacting with DnaK. They therefore propose that the Mtb DnaK facilitates protein folding following protein disaggregation by ClpB.

Compact self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of perfluorododecyl iodide (I-PFC12) of reproducible thickness (1.2 nm) are shown to form on silicon wafers. The SAMs have a high fluorine content (95%) and convey an extremely low surface energy to the silicon wafers (4.3 mN m-1), lower than previously reported in the literature for perfluorinated monolayers, and stable for over eight weeks. Shorter chain iodo-perfluorinated (I-PFC8) or bromo-perfluorinated molecules (Br-PFC10) led to less dense layers. The monolayers are stable to heating up to 60 °C, with some loss up to 150 °C. The I-PFC12 monolayer increases the work function of silicon wafers from 3.6 V to 4.4 eV, a factor that could be gainfully used in photovoltaic applications. The I-PFC12 monolayers can be transferred into patterns onto silica substrates by micro-contact printing. The NMR data and the reproducible thickness point to an upright halogen bonding interaction between the iodine in I-PFC12 and the surface oxygen on the native silica layer.

MoO3 is widely used in polymer-based organic solar cells as an anode buffer layer because of its high workfunction and formation of a strong dipole at the MoO3/polymer interface facilitating charge transfer across the MoO3/polymer interface. In the present work, we show that exposure of the MoO3/polymer interface to moisture attracts water molecules to the interface via diffusion. Because of their own strong dipole, water molecules counter the dipole at the MoO3/polymer interface. As a consequence, the charge transfer across the MoO3/polymer will reduce and affect the charge transport across the interface. The outcome of this work thus suggests that it is critical to keep the MoO3/polymer interface moisture-free, which requires special precautions in device fabrications. The composition of the MoO3/P3HT:PC61BM interface is analyzed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the depth profiling technique, neutral impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy. The results show that the concentration of oxygen increases upon exposure but leaves the oxidation state of Mo unchanged. The valence electron spectroscopy technique shows that the dipole across the MoO3/P3HT:PC61BM interface decreases even for short-time exposure to atmosphere because of the diffusion of water molecules to the interface. The far-ranging consequences for organic electronic devices are discussed.

5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT, also known as serotonin) regulates many physiological processes through the 5-HT receptor family. Here we report the crystal structure of 5-HT1B subtype receptor (5-HT1BR) bound to the psychotropic serotonin receptor inverse agonist methiothepin (MT). Crystallization was facilitated by replacing ICL3 with a novel optimized variant of BRIL (OB1) that enhances the formation of intermolecular polar interactions, making OB1 a potential useful tool for structural studies of membrane proteins. Unlike the agonist ergotamine (ERG), MT occupies only the conserved orthosteric binding pocket, explaining the wide spectrum effect of MT on serotonin receptors. Compared with ERG, MT shifts toward TM6 and sterically pushes residues W3276.48, F3306.50 and F3316.51 from inside the orthosteric binding pocket, leading to an outward movement of the extracellular end and a corresponding inward shift of the intracellular end of TM6, a feature shared by other reported inactive G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) structures. Together with the previous agonist-bound serotonin receptor structures, the inverse agonist-bound 5-HT1BR structure identifies a basis for the ligand-mediated switch of 5-HT1BR activity and provides a structural understanding of the inactivation mechanism of 5-HT1BR and some other class A GPCRs, characterized by ligand-induced outward movement of the extracellular end of TM6 that is coupled with inward movement of the cytoplasmic end of this helix.

Carbon fibers were surface modified with acrylate-derived polymers with aromatic side chains, to protect the fiber when exposed to high temperatures. The surface modification process induced a significant increase in tensile strength (23.7%) and tensile modulus (8%), for the benzyl-bearing side chain and retained superior tensile strength (20%) and tensile modulus (7%) after heating to 600 °C. Commercial carbon fibres gave a significant decrease in tensile strength and modulus, 7% and 4%, respectively, when exposed to the same conditions. This suggests that the surface modification process provides a protective effect against thermal degradation, with possible application in carbon fibre recycling. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) showed significant improvement before (up to 208%) and after (up to 84%) exposure to high temperatures. Analysis of the carbon fiber surface by XPS suggests that the surface bound polymer becomes more graphitic, potentially via the fusion of the aromatic side chains.

In the present work, phosphine-protected Au clusters, Au9(PPh3)8(NO3)3, were deposited onto RF-sputter deposited TiO2 films and subsequently covered with a Cr2O3 film only a few monolayers thick. The samples were then heated to 200 °C to remove the phosphine ligands, which is a lower temperature than that required to remove thiolate ligands from Au clusters. It was found that the Cr2O3 covering layer inhibited cluster agglomeration at an Au cluster coverage of 0.6% of a monolayer. When no protecting Cr2O3 layer was present, the clusters were found to agglomerate to a large degree on the TiO2 surface.

The incorporation of Cl anion and MA/Cs cations into FAPbI3 perovskite has been shown to dramatically improve solar cell performance. However, the microscopic properties of hybrid metal halide perovskite materials are not well understood yet, and it is still unclear how ion incorporation stabilizes the cubic FAPbI3 perovskite. In this work, we conduct a systematic study on the effect of the CsCl/MACl additives on the microstructure, crystal structure, and defects (nanotwins and stacking faults) of FA-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs). We find that the cubic α-phase in pure FAPbI3 is unstable with evidence of additional phases in the experimental electron diffraction analyses, namely the hexagonal δ-phase, the cubic supercell structure (with double the lattice constant of the α-phase) and a rhombohedral phase. The addition of CsCl/MACl effectively stabilizes the cubic FAPbI3 with a 2 × 2 × 2 supercell expansion and the Im 3 space group. X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence studies show that the addition of CsCl/MACl results in a change in both the lattice parameter and the optical bandgap, respectively. The lattice contraction is a result of the incorporation of Cs/MA cations and Cl anion in the FAPbI3 perovskites. Moreover, the addition of CsCl is shown to minimize the density of defects and improve the photoluminescence yield as well as the minority carrier lifetime of the perovskite films. All of these factors contribute to the improved device performance with a maximum efficiency of 21.98% measured for the 10 mol% CsCl perovskite layer.

Analysis of stainless steel 316 as a containment material in the presence of a phase change material (PCM) cycled at high temperature was carried out through a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction methods. In this work, stainless steel tokens were half-immersed in a chloride carbonate-based PCM, which were then thermally cycled in an air or a nitrogen environment up to 500 times, allowing the PCM to repeatedly transform between solid and liquid phases. Spectroscopy and diffraction methods were applied on the tokens, as well as the cycled PCM, to investigate the extent and nature of corrosion in such steel alloys. With varying sputtering conditions, the oxidation state at different depths of token surfaces was quantified. From the outermost corroded layer through to the bulk, this study shows a gradual change in distribution in both Cr and oxidation of Fe, while Cr was specifically found to have depleted and migrated into the PCM. The oxidation and depletion have been found to increase with increasing exposure time to PCM while sigma-phase structure embrittled in the corrosion layer. Refereed/Peer-reviewed
