Abstract Background Cupriavidus gilardii is a species of the genus Cupriavidus. Knowledge about the pathogenic characteristics of Cupriavidus gilardii is limited, especially cardiac infection with this bacterium has not been reported. Case presentation We encountered a case of pulmonary infection after myocardial infarction and heart failure. The initial empirical treatment with meropenem was ineffective. After cultured Cupriavidus gilardii, cefoperazone sulbactam and minocycline were used, and the infection and heart failure was improved for few days. Unfortunately, the patient eventually died of heart failure exacerbated by infection with Staphylococcus Epidermidis. Conclusion Meropenem has a limited therapeutic effect on this bacterium. Monitoring heart function and selecting effective antibiotics are crucial for improving the prognosis of patients suffered from heart disease and Cupriavidus gilardii infection.

Abstract The presence of noncanonical open reading frames within lncRNAs (long non-coding RNAs) suggests their potential for translation, yielding various functional peptides or proteins. However, the existence and specific roles of these products in gastric cancer remain largely unclear. Here we identify the HOXA10-HOXA9-derived small protein (HDSP) in gastric cancer through comprehensive analysis and experimental validation, including mass spectrometry and western blotting. HDSP exhibits high expression and oncogenic roles in gastric cancer. Mechanistically, HDSP blocks TRIM25-mediated ubiquitination and degradation by interacting with MECOM, leading to MECOM accumulation and enhanced SPINK1 transcription-a gene promoting cancer via the EGFR signaling pathway. Furthermore, MECOM fosters HOXA10-HOXA9 transcription, establishing a feedback loop activating SPINK1-EGFR signaling. HDSP knockdown inhibits tumor growth in a PDX (patient-derived xenograft) model, and infusion of an artificially synthesized HDSP peptide as a neoantigen enhances immune cell-mediated anti-tumor efficacy against gastric cancer in vitro and in vivo. These findings propose HDSP as a potential therapeutic target or neoantigen candidate for gastric cancer treatment.

This study investigates the dynamic changes in wheat canopy spectral characteristics across seven critical growth stages (Tillering, Pre-Jointing, Jointing, Post-Jointing, Booting, Flowering, and Ripening) using UAV-based multispectral remote sensing. By analyzing four key spectral bands—green (G), red (R), red-edge (RE), and near-infrared (NIR)—and their combinations, we identify spectral features that reflect changes in canopy activity, health, and structure. Results show that the green band is highly sensitive to chlorophyll activity and low canopy coverage during the Tillering stage, while the NIR band captures structural complexity and canopy density during the Jointing and Booting stages. The combination of G and NIR bands reveals increased canopy density and spectral concentration during the Booting stage, while the RE band effectively detects plant senescence and reduced spectral uniformity during the ripening stage. Time-series analysis of spectral data across growth stages improves the accuracy of growth stage identification, with dynamic spectral changes offering insights into growth inflection points. Spatially, the study demonstrates the potential for identifying field-level anomalies, such as water stress or disease, providing actionable data for targeted interventions. This comprehensive spatio-temporal monitoring framework improves crop management and offers a cost-effective, precise solution for disease prediction, yield forecasting, and resource optimization. The study paves the way for integrating UAV remote sensing into precision agriculture practices, with future research focusing on hyperspectral data integration to enhance monitoring models.

Orderly and controllable dissipation of impact kinetic energy is the key to ensuring train collision safety in different collision scenarios. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the change rule of collision energy dissipation under different collision scenarios and design the parameters of the energy-absorbing structure to meet the demand for collision energy dissipation. Four representative train collision scenarios are formulated based on train collision accidents, and the concept of energy dissipation rate is proposed to characterize the drastic degree of collision energy change under different collision scenarios. Based on the train longitudinal collision dynamics model verified by the line collision test of the train, the effects of varying collision scenarios on the energy dissipation rate, energy absorption and maximum average acceleration of train collision are studied. The study results show that the longitudinal collision dynamics model of the train established in this paper can better characterize the dynamic response of the vehicle by comparing it with the results of the line collision test. The maximum difference in the speed of each vehicle after the collision is 4.91%. The differences in the energy dissipation process, interface energy absorption and maximum average acceleration are minor in four collision scenarios, including a moving train hitting a stationary train, rear-end train collision and head-on train collision. The maximum difference in energy absorbed at the interface for head-on collision is 1.54%. The initial and residual collision kinetic energy is greater in the train rear-end collision scenario, and the train rear-end collision scenario should be considered when evaluating the train’s lateral instability and vertical climbing behavior.

To address the challenge of suboptimal object detection outcomes stemming from the deformability of marine flexible biological entities, this study introduces an algorithm tailored for detecting marine flexible biological targets. Initially, we compiled a dataset comprising marine flexible biological subjects and developed a Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) algorithm, supplemented with a boundary detection enhancement module, to refine underwater image quality and accentuate the distinction between the images’ foregrounds and backgrounds. This enhancement mitigates the issue of foreground-background similarity encountered in detecting marine flexible biological entities. Moreover, the proposed adaptation incorporates a Deformable Convolutional Network (DCN) network module in lieu of the C2f module within the YOLOv8n algorithm framework, thereby augmenting the model’s proficiency in capturing geometric transformations and concentrating on pivotal areas. The Neck network module is enhanced with the RepBi-PAN architecture, bolstering its capability to amalgamate and emphasize essential characteristics of flexible biological targets. To advance the model’s feature information processing efficiency, we integrated the SimAM attention mechanism. Finally, to diminish the adverse effects of inferior-quality labels within the dataset, we advocate the use of WIoU (Wise-IoU) as a bounding box loss function, which serves to refine the anchor boxes’ quality assessment. Simulation experiments show that, in comparison to the conventional YOLOv8n algorithm, our method markedly elevates the precision of marine flexible biological target detection.

Objectives This study aimed to estimate the variation in disease burden associated with air pollutants and other respiratory viruses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods We adopted a machine learning approach to calculate the excess mortality attributable to air pollutants and influenza, during the pre-pandemic and pandemic period. Results In the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were 8762 (95% confidence interval, 7503–9993), and 12,496 (11,718–13,332) excess all-cause deaths in Hong Kong. These figures correspond to 117.4 and 167.9 per 100,000 population, and 12.6% and 8.5% of total deaths in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Compared to the period before the pandemic, excess deaths from all-causes, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, pneumonia and influenza attributable to influenza A and B significantly decreased in all age groups. However, excess deaths associated with ozone increased in all age-disease categories, while the relative change of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) and particular matters less than 10 µm (PM 10 ) associated burden showed a varied pattern. Conclusions A notable shift in disease burden attributable to influenza and air pollutants was observed in the pandemic period, suggesting that both direct and indirect impacts shall be considered when assessing the global and regional burden of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract Purpose Cytokines regulate the interaction between the immune system and malignant tumors. Among them, interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a multifunctional anti-inflammatory cytokine mainly produced by immune cells. The correlation between gastric cancer and T/C single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of interleukin-10 (IL-10) promoter−819(rs1800871)was opaque and remained to be determined. We aim to explore the pertinence of gastric cancer and SNP of interleukin 10–819 by meta-analysis via five statistical models. Methods Databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, the Scopus, and Google Scholars were comprehensively retrieved for the eligible studies on the related topic from inception to March 2022. Odds ratios (ORs) were generated for dichotomous variants by meta-analysis in each model via STATA 17.0 MP. The statistical models comprised recessive model, over-dominant model, allele model, co-dominant model and dominant model. Subgroup analysis was performed to investigate the difference across races as well as the source of heterogeneity if necessary. Results Eventually a total of 15 articles reporting 7779 patients were enrolled in our study. There were 2383 patients and 5396 controls, collectively. There was no correlation between gastric cancer and IL-10 819 in recessive model, co-dominant model or dominant model, and subgroup analysis showed that Asian, Latin American and Caucasian had no correlation with the risk of gastric cancer. In the allelic model, there was significant correlation between gastric cancer and IL-10 819 (OR = 3.96%, 95%CI: 3.28 to 3.78). In the over-dominant model, there is no correlation between gastric cancer and IL-10 819, but subgroup analysis uncovered significant vulnerability of Asian people with regard to gastric cancer. Conclusions In our study, both Asians, Latin Americans, and Europeans showed an increased risk of gastric cancer in the allelic model, whereas only Asians showed significant susceptibility in the super dominant model. Of course, more large cohort studies are needed to confirm our results.

[Objective] Under unpredictable complex conditions such as natural disasters, failures of vehicle/track key components, or external impacts, metro train derailment is still highly prone to occurrence. Therefore, research on train passive derailment protection device schemes is essential. [Method] A dynamics nonlinear simulation model of metro train multi-body system is established. The typical shapes of both the wheel tread and the steel rail are matched. Based on the characteristics of metro train operating routes, three schemes for metro train derailment protection devices are proposed, and the derailment condition for each scheme is simulated under low-speed operating conditions. Regarding the simulation results, the effectiveness of preventing secondary rail climbing/derailment, the strength of the installation position, and the damage to vehicle caused by collision between rail and derailment protection device after derailment are taking into consideration comprehensively, a scheme of installing lateral anti-derailment stops at framework lower end as the derailment protection device is proposed. A dynamics simulation analysis is conducted on the metro train derailment protection device and the result is compared with the non-protection device working condition. [Result & Conclusion] The metro train derailment protection device exhibits a significant anti-derailment effect with certain feasibility. The dynamic envelope of the above device meets the clearance requirements of the metro line and does not affect train normal operation, making it suitable for engineering applications.

Over the past 30 years, researchers have developed X-ray-focusing telescopes by employing the principle of total reflection in thin metal films. The Wolter-I focusing mirror with variable-curvature surfaces demands high precision. However, there has been limited investigation into the removal mechanisms for variable-curvature X-ray mandrels, which are crucial for achieving the desired surface roughness and form accuracy, especially in reducing mid-spatial frequency (MSF) errors. It is essential to incorporate flexible control in deterministic small-tool polishing to improve the tool’s adaptability to curvature variations and achieve stable, Gaussian-like tool influence functions (TIFs). In this paper, we introduce a curvature-adaptive prediction model for compliance figuring, based on the Preston hypothesis, using a compliant shaping tool with high slurry absorption and retention capabilities. This model predicts the compliance figuring process of variable-curvature symmetrical mandrels for X-ray grazing incidence mirrors by utilizing planar tool influence functions. Initially, a variable-curvature pressure model was developed to account for the parabolic and hyperbolic optical surfaces’ curvature characteristics. By introducing time-varying removal functions for material removal, the model establishes a variable-curvature factor function, which correlates actual downward pressure with parameters such as contact radius and contact angle, thus linking the variable-curvature surface with a planar reference. Subsequently, through analysis of the residence time distribution across different TIF models, hierarchical filtering, and PSD distribution, real-time correction of the TIFs was achieved to enable customized variable-curvature polishing. Furthermore, by applying a time-varying deconvolution algorithm, multiple rounds of flexible polishing iterations were conducted on the mandrels of a rotationally symmetric variable-curvature optical component, and the experimental results demonstrate a significant improvement in form accuracy, surface quality, and the optical performance of the mirror.

We developed an untethered robotic tuna featuring tensegrity joints for the purposes of simplifying the design procedure, reserving enough internal space, reducing the frictional loss of structures and generating a relatively smooth fish body wave. To achieve these objectives, a novel shell-like tensegrity joint was introduced, paired with a single-motor multiple-joint driving mechanism. The morphology matching design method of the tensegrity joint was proposed to fit the streamlined fish body, where the deflection angles of each joint were predetermined to generate the specific body waveform. Stiffness analysis shows that the tensegrity joint could function equivalently to a traditional rotational joint, given certain geometric conditions. Based on the fabricated robotic tuna prototype, extensive free-swimming experiments were performed to optimize its swimming performance by varying key parameters, including the caudal fin‘s shape, flexibility and rotational stiffness and joint deflection angles. The results reveal that the robotic tuna achieved the highest swimming speed of 1.31 body lengths per second (BL/s) at a driving frequency of 2.4 Hz, and the maximum stride length increased to 0.81 BL/cycle at 1 Hz, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed design scheme. This study provides valuable insight for developing high-performance bio-inspired autonomous underwater vehicles.

Crop change detection study is the foundation of agricultural sustainability. The inherent high spectral resolution of hyperspectral images, combined with multi-temporal datasets, facilitates the detection of subtle changes. To enhance the accuracy and applicability of hyperspectral change detection in agricultural scenes, this paper introduces a fast hyperspectral change detection approach for agricultural crops based on low-rank matrix and morphological feature extraction (FLRaMF). The goal is to improve detection precision and computational efficiency of the change detection process. The method initially employs rapid low-rank matrix extraction to separate changing and non-changing pixels in the spectral domain. Subsequently, spatial information is introduced using attribute profiles, restricting spectral anomalies through hyperspectral morphology, which ultimately improves the detection results. This study utilized four hyperspectral change detection datasets in agricultural crop scenarios, optimizing and analyzing parameters. Experimental results and analysis indicate that the FLRaMF method can achieve higher detection accuracy with reduced computation cost in unsupervised, default parameter scenarios when performing agricultural crop change detection tasks.

The ionosphere is one of the important error sources that affect the communication of radio signals. The international reference ionosphere (IRI) model is a commonly used model to describe ionospheric parameters. The driving parameter IG12 of the IRI-2016 model was optimally updated based on GNSS-TEC data from 2015 and 2019. The electron density profiles and NmF2 calculated by the IRI-2016 model (upda-IRI-2016) driven by the updated IG12 value (IG-up) were evaluated for their accuracy using ionosonde observations and COSMIC inversion data. The experiments show that both the electron density profiles and NmF2 calculated by upda-IRI-2016 driven by IG-up show significant optimization effects, compared to the IRI-2016 model driven by IG12. For electron density, the precision improvement (PI) for both MAE and RMSE at the Beijing station exceed 31.2% in January 2015 and 16.0% in January 2019. While the PI of MAE and RMSE at the Wuhan station, which is located at a lower latitude, both exceed 32.5% in January 2015, both exceed 42.1% in January 2019, which is significantly higher than that of the Beijing station. In 2015, the PI of MAE and RMSE compared with COSMIC are both higher than 20%. For NmF2, the PI is greater for low solar activity years and low latitude stations, with the Wuhan station showing a PI of more than 11.7% in January 2019 compared to January 2015. The PI compared to COSMIC was higher than 17.2% in 2015.

Abstract Drug resistance and poor treatment response are major obstacles to the effective treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). A deeper understanding of the mechanisms regulating drug resistance and response genes in AML is therefore urgently needed. Our previous research has highlighted the important role of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (NRF2) in AML, where it plays a critical role in detoxifying reactive oxygen species and influencing sensitivity to chemotherapy. In this study, we identify a core set of direct NRF2 targets that are involved in ferroptosis, a novel form of cell death. Of particular interest, we find that glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) is a key ferroptosis gene that is consistently upregulated in AML, and high expression of GPX4 is associated with poor prognosis for AML patients. Importantly, simultaneous inhibition of NRF2 with ML385 and GPX4 with FIN56 or RSL3 synergistically targets AML cells, triggering ferroptosis. Treatment with ML385 + FIN56/RSL3 resulted in a marked reduction in NRF2 and GPX4 expression. Furthermore, NRF2 knockdown enhanced the sensitivity of AML cells to the ferroptosis inducers. Taken together, our results suggest that combination therapy targeting both NRF2 and GPX4 may represent a promising approach for the treatment of AML.

Abstract Rail vehicles generate huge longitudinal impact loads in collisions. If unreasonable matching exists between the compressive strength of the intermediate coupler and the structural strength of the car body, the risk of car body structure damage and train derailment will increase. Herein, a four-stage rigid–flexible coupling finite element model of the coupler is established considering the coupler buckling load. The influence of the coupler buckling load on the train longitudinal–vertical–horizontal buckling behavior was studied, and the mechanism of the train horizontal buckling instability in train collisions was revealed. Analysis results show that an intermediate coupler should be designed to ensure that the actual buckling load is less than the compressive load when the car body structure begins to deform plastically. The actual buckling load of the coupler and the asymmetry of the structural strength of the car body in the lateral direction are two important influencing factors for the lateral buckling of a train collision. If the strength of the two sides of the car body structure in the lateral direction is asymmetrical, the deformation on the weaker side will be larger, and the end of the car body will begin to deflect under the action of the coupler force, which in turn causes the train to undergo sawtooth buckling.

Abstract N7-methylguanosine (m7G) modification signature has recently emerged as a crucial regulator of tumor progression and treatment in cancer. However, there is limited information available on the genomic profile of lower-grade gliomas (LGGs) related to m7G methylation modification genes’ function in tumorigenesis and progression. In this study, we employed bioinformatics methods to characterize m7G modifications in individuals with LGG from The Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We used gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA), single sample GSEA (ssGSEA), CIBERSORT algorithm, ESTIMATE algorithm, and TIDE to evaluate the association between m7G modification patterns, tumor microenvironment (TME) cell infiltration properties, and immune infiltration markers. The m7G scoring scheme using principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to investigate the m7G modification patterns quantitatively. We examined the m7G modification hub genes' expression levels in normal samples, refractory epilepsy samples, and LGG samples using immunohistochemistry, western-blotting, and qRT-PCR. Our findings revealed that individuals with LGG could be categorized into two groups based on m7G scores (high and low) according to the properties of m7G. Moreover, we observed that high m7G score was associated with significant clinical benefit and prolonged survival duration in the anti-PD-1 cohort, while low m7G score was associated with improved prognostic outcomes and increased likelihood of complete or partial response in the anti-PD-L1 cohort. Different m7G subtypes also showed varying Tumor Mutational Burden (TMB) and immune profiles and might have distinct responses to immunotherapy. Furthermore, we identified five potential genetic markers that were highly correlated with the m7G score signature index. These findings provide insight into the features and classification associated with m7G methylation modifications and may aid in improving the clinical outcome of LGG.

Abstract Fishes have learned how to achieve outstanding swimming performance through the evolution of hundreds of millions of years, which can provide bio-inspiration for robotic fish design. The premise of designing an excellent robotic fish include fully understanding of fish locomotion mechanism and grasp of the advanced control strategy in robot domain. In this paper, the research development on fish swimming is presented, aiming to offer a reference for the later research. First, the research methods including experimental methods and simulation methods are detailed. Then the current research directions including fish locomotion mechanism, structure and function research and bionic robotic fish are outlined. Fish locomotion mechanism is discussed from three views: macroscopic view to find a unified principle, microscopic view to include muscle activity and intermediate view to study the behaviors of single fish and fish school. Structure and function research is mainly concentrated from three aspects: fin research, lateral line system and body stiffness. Bionic robotic fish research focuses on actuation, materials and motion control. The paper concludes with the future trend that curvature control, machine learning and multiple robotic fish system will play a more important role in this field. Overall, the intensive and comprehensive research on fish swimming will decrease the gap between robotic fish and real fish and contribute to the broad application prospect of robotic fish.

ObjectiveOur aim was to determine the efficacy of four-week probiotic supplementation on gastrointestinal health. The secondary objectives were to assess probiotic effects on immune reaction, as well as weight control and metabolic health.MethodsWe conducted two randomized sub-trials, respectively, among subjects who were diagnosed with functional constipation (FC) or functional diarrhea (FDr) according to the Rome IV criteria. Abstract To obtain improved comprehensive crashworthiness criteria for a B-type subway train, the influence laws of the vehicle design collision weight M and empty stroke D on the train’s collision responses were investigated, and multi-objective optimization and decision-making were performed to minimize TS (total compression displacement along the moving train) and TAMA (the overall mean acceleration along the moving train). Firstly, a one-dimensional train collision dynamics model was established and verified by comparing with the results of the finite element model. Secondly, based on the dynamics model, the influence laws of M and D on the collision responses, such as the energy-absorbing devices’ displacements and absorbed energy, vehicles’ velocity and acceleration, TS, TAMA and the coupling correlation effect were investigated. Then, surrogate models for TS and TAMA were developed using the optimal Latin hypercube method (OLHD) and response surface method (RSM), and multi-objective optimization was conducted using the particle swarm optimization algorithm method (MPOSO). Finally, the entropy method was used to obtain the weight coefficients for TS and TAMA, and multi-objective decision-making was performed. The results indicate that D and M significantly affect the compression displacements and energy absorption of the first three collision interfaces, but have limited impact on the last three collision interfaces. The velocity versus time curves of vehicle M1 and M2 are shifted and parallel with different D. However, the velocity versus time curves of all the vehicles are shifted but gradually divergent with different M. The maximum collision instantaneous accelerations of the vehicles are directly determined by M, but are only slightly affected by D. Under the coupling effect, all concerned collision responses are strongly correlated with M; however, the responses are weakly correlated with D except for the compression displacement at the M2-M3 collision interface and the maximum collision instantaneous acceleration of vehicle M2. The comprehensive crashworthiness criteria of the B-type subway train were significantly improved after multi-objective optimization and decision-making. The research provides more theoretical and engineering application references for the subway train crashworthiness design.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related mortality globally. Therefore, a better understanding of the early molecular events of this disease is needed. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a critical role in the regulation of tumorigenesis and cancer progression. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of ZFAS1 in CRC. We analyzed three independent microarray datasets of CRC tissues from GEO and found that ZFAS1 expression was remarkably upregulated in all three datasets. Moreover, we validated the overexpression of ZFAS1 in CRC tissues compared with normal tissues and found that ZFAS1 was positively correlated with tumor size and metastasis in CRC. Knockdown of ZFAS1 significantly suppressed the malignant phenotype and lipogenesis of CRC cells. Mechanistically, ZFAS1 binds polyadenylate-binding protein 2 (PABP2) to stabilize SREBP1 mRNA, thereby increasing the expression of SREBP1 and its target genes stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD1) and fatty acid synthase (FASN), thus promoting CRC lipid accumulation. These data demonstrated that ZFAS1 could act as an oncogene for CRC and that ZFAS1 reprograms lipid metabolism by binding with PABP2 to stabilize SREBP1 mRNA accumulation, implicating it as a novel and potent target for the treatment of CRC.

Luchuan pig, an obese indigenous Chinese porcine breed, has a desirable meat quality and reproductive capacity. Duroc, a traditional western breed, shows a faster growth rate, high feed efficiency and high lean meat rate. Given the unique features these two porcine breeds have, it is of interest to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms behind their distinctive nature. In this study, the metabolic and transcriptomic profiles of longissimus dorsi muscle from Duroc and Luchuan pigs were compared. A total of 609 metabolites were identified, 77 of which were significantly decreased in Luchuan compared to Duroc, and 71 of which were significantly elevated. Most differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) upregulated in Luchuan were glycerophospholipids, fatty acids, oxidized lipids, alcohols, and amines, while metabolites downregulated in Luchuan were mostly amino acids, organic acids and nucleic acids, bile acids and hormones. From our RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) data we identified a total of 3638 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), 1802 upregulated and 1836 downregulated in Luchuan skeletal muscle compared to Duroc. Combined multivariate and pathway enrichment analyses of metabolome and transcriptome results revealed that many of the DEGs and DAMs are associated with critical energy metabolic pathways, especially those related to glucose and lipid metabolism. We examined the expression of important DEGs in two pathways, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway and fructose and mannose metabolism, using Real-Time Quantitative Reverse Transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). Genes related to glucose uptake, glycolysis, glycogen synthesis, fatty acid synthesis (PFKFB1, PFKFB4, MPI, TPI1, GYS1, SLC2A4, FASN, IRS1, ULK1) are more activated in Luchuan, while genes related to fatty acid oxidation, cholesterol synthesis (CPT1A, HMGCR, FOXO3) are more suppressed. Energy utilization can be a decisive factor to the distinctive metabolic, physiological and nutritional characteristics in skeletal muscle of the two breeds we studied. Our research may facilitate future porcine breeding projects and can be used to reveal the potential molecular basis of differences in complex traits between various breeds.

Based on exposure history and symptom onset of 22 Omicron BA.1 cases in South Korea from November to December 2021, we estimated mean incubation period of 3.5 days (95% CI: 2.5, 3.8), and then compared to that of 6.5 days (95% CI: 5.3, 7.7) for 64 cases during Delta variants' dominance in June 2021. For Omicron BA.1 variants, we found that 95% of symptomatic cases developed clinical conditions within 6.0 days (95% CI: 4.3, 6.6) after exposure. Thus, a shorter quarantine period may be considered based on symptoms, or similarly laboratory testing, when Omicron BA.1 variants are circulating.

Abstract In this paper, groundwater treatment sludge (GTS) was recycled as a magnetic adsorbent via a facile calcination process without adding any reductant. The prepared magnetic adsorbents (MAs) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), vibrating sample magnenometer (VSM) and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The results showed that GTS comprised 33.2% Fe, 1.4% Al and 6.2% Si, and exhibited a weak saturation magnetization of 0.0008 emu/g. Without NaOH, the GTS calcinated at 700 and 500 °C were well magnetized with Ms of 20.1 and 7.1 emu/g, separately, but exhibited a low Ms of 0.43 emu/g at 300 °C. By adding NaOH powder, the Ms of GTS apparently increased to 4.9 emu/g after calcination at 300 °C, and further to 8.5 emu/g at 500 °C. In GTS, about 96.1% Fe was involved in ferrihydrite form. The Ms of calcinated GTS was accompanied with the phase transformation of ferrihydrite to maghemite. Si/Al oxides in GTS coordinated on the surface sites of ferrihydrite and inhibited the conjunction and phase transformation of adjacent ferrihydrite particles, but were effectively desorbed as in the presence of NaOH. Na500, preparing by calcinating GTS at 500 °C with NaOH, showed an optimal total surface sites (H s) of 0.65 mmol/g. Oxytetracycline (OTC) was used as a target for studying the adsorption characteristics of synthetic magnetic adsorbents and a high adsorption capacity of oxytetracycline of 862.1 mg/g in comparison with the other calcinated GTS, and the adsorption data was consistent with the Langmuir model. By adding 6 g/L Na-500, approximately 100% of oxytetracycline and tetracycline and nearly 40% total organic carbon were removed from real pharmaceutical wastewater. With the method, GTS can be converted in mass production to magnetic adsorbent that exhibits effective application in pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

Plant fermentation extracts (PFEs) produced from fermenting various fruits and vegetables by microorganisms have traditionally been consumed as healthy beverages in Asia. Herein, the immunomodulatory activities of a novel polysaccharide (AP) isolated from PFE were examined in RAW264.7 cells. The results showed that AP was composed of Rha, Xyl, Man and Glu in a molar ratio of 9.7:27.6:8.81:53.85 and the average molecular weight was 4.81 × 105 Da. Our data showed that AP could significantly enhance the phagocytic activity of RAW264.7 cells and their ability to release NO, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-10. Furthermore, AP could significantly up-regulate the mRNA expression of iNOS, cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10) and pattern recognition receptors (TLR2, MR, GR, CR3 and SR). Western blotting demonstrated that the regulation of NO and TNF-α were mediated through the NF-κB and MAPK signalling pathways. These findings helped to elucidate the immunomodulatory properties of the polysaccharide AP and PFE.

Abstract Background Accurate diagnosis of early lung cancer from small pulmonary nodules (SPN) is challenging in clinical setting. We aimed to develop a radiomic nomogram to differentiate lung adenocarcinoma from benign SPN. Methods This retrospective study included a total of 210 pathologically confirmed SPN (≤ 10 mm) from 197 patients, which were randomly divided into a training dataset (n = 147; malignant nodules, n = 94) and a validation dataset (n = 63; malignant nodules, n = 39). Radiomic features were extracted from the cancerous volumes of interest on contrast-enhanced CT images. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was used for data dimension reduction, feature selection, and radiomic signature building. Using multivariable logistic regression analysis, a radiomic nomogram was developed incorporating the radiomic signature and the conventional CT signs observed by radiologists. Discrimination and calibration of the radiomic nomogram were evaluated. Results The radiomic signature consisting of five radiomic features achieved an AUC of 0.853 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.735–0.970), accuracy of 81.0%, sensitivity of 82.9%, and specificity of 77.3%. The two conventional CT signs achieved an AUC of 0.833 (95% CI: 0.707–0.958), accuracy of 65.1%, sensitivity of 53.7%, and specificity of 86.4%. The radiomic nomogram incorporating the radiomic signature and conventional CT signs showed an improved AUC of 0.857 (95% CI: 0.723–0.991), accuracy of 84.1%, sensitivity of 85.4%, and specificity of 81.8%. The radiomic nomogram had good calibration power. Conclusion The radiomic nomogram might has the potential to be used as a non-invasive tool for individual prediction of SPN preoperatively. It might facilitate decision-making and improve the management of SPN in the clinical setting.

A new approach to preparing the cesium antimonide photocathode has been developed. A tungsten sponge diffusion barrier layer, instead of the conventional nickel pipe, was used as the evaporation source so that a slow and uniform evaporation of the photoemissive materials, whose direction and amount could be well controlled, was realized. Then, the cathode substrate surface was modified with a nanoparticle layer, resulting in better photoemissive material adsorption and higher light absorbance. A new technique of treating the tungsten sponge, which worked as the barrier layer to the diffusion of the photoemissive materials, was studied. The tungsten–copper alloy was subjected to direct high-frequency heating in a vacuum chamber so that the copper in the alloy evaporated rapidly, resulting in smooth and shiny tungsten sponge. In comparison with the conventional method for fabricating the tungsten sponge, in which the copper in the tungsten–copper alloy was removed chemically, the new method removed the copper more completely, took less time, and caused less pollution. By means of direct-current magnetic sputtering, a layer of osmium nanoparticles of 50 nm diameter was deposited on the photocathode substrate surface. Then, a diode tube for the photocathode emission test equipped with a small titanium ion pump, whose pressure was as low as 5 × 10−8 Pa, was developed. A comparative emission performance test was carried out on the photocathode with the substrate surface covered with an osmium film vs that covered with osmium nanoparticles. The highest quantum efficiencies of the stable photoemission from the two photocathodes were 1.80 × 10−3 and 5.13 × 10−3, respectively. Moreover, the light absorptivity of the osmium nanoparticle-coated photocathode was 2.16 times that of the osmium film-coated photocathode, and the quantum efficiency of the former was 2.85 times that of the latter. Therefore, the improvement in the quantum efficiency of the osmium nanoparticle-coated photocathode is mainly attributed to the increase in the light absorptivity.

The effects of temperature and water content on the electrical conductivity of cement mortar with different sizes of carbon nanotubes were studied, and the effect of the size of carbon nanotubes on the electrical conductivity of cement mortar was revealed. The results show that the small diameter carbon nanotubes have the best enhancement effect on the electrical conductivity of cement mortar. The electrical conductivity of cement mortar with different diameters of carbon nanotubes is positively correlated with water content, and with the decrease of the diameter of carbon nanotubes in the sample, the effect of water content on the electrical conductivity of carbon nanotube cement mortar becomes smaller and smaller. With the increase of temperature, the electrical conductivity of cement mortar containing carbon nanotubes of different diameters increases in varying degrees, but the increase of samples with small diameter carbon nanotubes is the smallest, indicating that the electrical conductivity of cement mortars with small diameter carbon nanotubes is less affected by temperature.

Evaporation properties of Monel and stainless-steel alloy materials that are widely applied in microwave vacuum electron devices have been studied by time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ToFMS) as their evaporants has an immediate impact on their lifetime and reliability. The composition and sizes of evaporants of Monel and stainless steel have been determined. Minor evaporation of Mn, Cu, and Cr in Monel and stainless steel occurred at ∼800°C, which is much lower than the melting points of Mn, Cu, and Cr, and evaporation of Mn, Cu, and Cr increased with increasing temperature. Experimental results show that ToFMS is a very fast testing method for researching metallic material evaporation. At 900°C, substantial changes occurred in the surface microstructures of Monel and stainless steel as high porosity and many grain boundaries were observed. With increasing treatment time, grain boundaries gradually became larger, decreasing material strength and leading to outgassing or even air leakage. Such phenomena have been analyzed based on relevant theory, and appropriate feasible methods for use of metallic materials have been discussed from the perspective of vacuum device design and process control.

This paper considers unsupervised dimensionality reduction of multi-view data, where locality preserving canonical correlation analysis and a new locality-preserving canonical correlation analysis are two typical effective methods. However, they ignore the global structure while considering the local structure of data, and are sensitive to noises because of the relationship of neighbors based on the Euclidean distance. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-view dimensionality reduction method: multiset canonical correlations analysis based on low-rank representation. Our model introduces the cross-view similarity matrix to consider the correlation of all different points in cross views, which makes it not only preserve the local structure but also the global structure of data. And the cross-view similarity matrix is constructed by using low-rank representation, which can make the model more robust. In addition, a parameter ß is introduced to adjust the importance of the correlation of different sample points, enhancing the generalization ability for different datasets. Experiments on four multi-view datasets show our proposed method has better performance than the related methods.

Fe-rich sludge is a solid waste considerably generated in coagulation, Fenton, and catalytic processes for wastewater treatment, in which it is commonly disposed in landfills. However, a limited portion of sludge is recycled as polymeric ferric flocculant and iron red. Herein, the Fe-rich sludge was simulated by the hydrolysis of FeCl3 and converted to a new one-dimensional KFeS2 cluster via a one-step hydrothermal route with the addition of K2S and KOH. The results showed that in the hydrothermal process, KFeS2 cluster grew radially from 2 μm to 10 μm with the increase in KOH concentration from 2 M to 5 M. The new cluster showed a high adsorption capacity of 2933.6 mg/L for doxycycline, which is 14 times that of sludge and higher than that of hematite nanoparticles, commercial polymeric ferric flocculant and pyrite. The adsorption isotherm complied with the Langmuir model, and the adsorption kinetics fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model. During adsorption, KFeS2 cluster was completely hydrolysed to release Fe/S-bearing colloids with a considerable number of Fe-SH/Fe-OH groups for the coordination of the NH2 group of tetracycline-type antibiotics, e.g. doxycycline. However, an inefficient removal of quinoline and p-nitrophenol was observed. With the proposed method, the used alkaline solution was completely recycled in the next round of KFeS2 synthesis without the generation of secondary waste. Such green method has potential applications in the resource utilisation of Fe-rich sludge.

Exosomes transport biologically active cargo (e.g., proteins and microRNA) between cells, including many of the paracrine factors that mediate the beneficial effects associated with stem-cell therapy. Stem cell derived exosomes, in particular mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), have been shown previously to largely replicate the therapeutic activity associated with the cells themselves, which suggests that exosomes may be a useful cell-free alternative for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders. However, the mechanisms that govern how exosomes home to damaged cells and tissues or the uptake and distribution of exosomal cargo are poorly characterized, because techniques for distinguishing between exosomal proteins and proteins in the targeted tissues are lacking. Here, we report the development of an in vivo model that enabled the visualization, tracking, and quantification of proteins from systemically administered MSC exosomes. The model uses bioorthogonal chemistry and cell-selective metabolic labeling to incorporate the non-canonical amino acid azidonorleucine (ANL) into the MSC proteome. ANL incorporation is facilitated via expression of a mutant (L274G) methionyl-tRNA-synthetase (MetRS∗) and subsequent incubation with ANL-supplemented media; after which ANL can be covalently linked to alkyne-conjugated reagents (e.g., dyes and resins) via click chemistry. Our results demonstrate that when the exosomes produced by ANL-treated, MetRS∗-expressing MSCs were systemically administered to mice, the ANL-labeled exosomal proteins could be accurately and reliably identified, isolated, and quantified from a variety of mouse organs, and that myocardial infarction (MI) both increased the abundance of exosomal proteins and redistributed a number of them from the membrane fraction of intact hearts to the cytosol of cells in infarcted hearts. Additionally, we found that Desmoglein-1c is enriched in MSC exosomes and taken up by ischemic myocardium. Collectively, our results indicate that this newly developed bioorthogonal system can provide crucial insights into exosome homing, as well as the uptake and biodistribution of exosomal proteins.

A large number of numerical simulations are required to design an energy absorption scheme for train crashworthiness, leading to low design efficiency in the early stage. Based on train collision dynamics theory and the finite element method, a dynamic finite element model of longitudinal train collision is established. According to the model, we studied the acceleration time-history characteristics during the train collision process, obtained the mean-peak ratio coefficient, and determined the calculation formula for the maximum mean acceleration of a longitudinal train collision. Through characteristic analysis of the vehicle acceleration, interface force, and other parameters during a longitudinal train collision, the calculation method of the mean acceleration was improved. The analysis shows that the maximum mean acceleration depends on two stages in the collision process: (1) the coupler action of the head vehicle: the mean-peak ratio coefficient of the head vehicle is 0.7 in this stage, and the mean-peak ratio coefficient of other vehicles is 0.43; (2) the coupler of the collision interface is cut off, and the energy absorption devices of the head vehicle or intermediate vehicle absorb energy; the mean-peak ratio coefficient of the vehicle is 0.93 in this stage. On this basis, a mathematical function is established describing the mean acceleration of the vehicle and the average crushing force of the coupler collapse tube and the energy-absorbing device. The calculation formula is obtained for the maximum mean acceleration of the longitudinal train collision, and the results are compared with the mean acceleration obtained by numerical simulation. The Kruskal–Wallis ANOVA multisample independent nonparametric test was conducted to verify the reliability of the calculation results in the 95% confidence interval. The calculation formula can be used to calculate the maximum mean acceleration in the energy allocation stage of train crashworthiness design to effectively improve the efficiency of train collision energy allocation.

Tracking fluctuations in the Cu2+ level in sweat is meaningful for non-invasive and real-time assessment of Cu2+-abnormality-related diseases and provides important diagnostic information. However, the user-unfriendly ways to obtain sweat and sweat biofouling have limited the development of this field. Herein, we exploit a highly sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor as a detection method, a powerful laser engraving technique for the large-scale fabrication of laser-induced graphene and In-doped CdS (LIG-In-CdS) photoelectrodes, and a hydrophilic porous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel for natural sweat collection for fingertip touch sweat Cu2+ monitoring. The proposed sensor has several very attractive features: (i) the LIG-In-CdS photoelectrode with high photoelectric conversion efficiency can be produced by a cheap 450 nm semiconductor laser system; (ii) the sensor performs Cu2+ detection with a wide linear range of 1.28 ng/mL~5.12 μg/mL and good selectivity; (iii) the PVA hydrogel possesses an excellent antifouling effect ability and a rapid natural sweat collection ability; and (iv) the sensor exhibits feasibility and good reliability for PEC sensing of sweat Cu2+. Thus, these advantages endow the proposed method with a great deal of potential for smart monitoring of heavy metals in sweat in the future.

How the carriers behave in a Weyl semimetal if they occupy the lowest Landau level remains elusive. Here, the authors report evidences of electrons occupying zeroth chiral Landau levels with distinct linear dispersion behaviors for two inequivalent Weyl nodes in a Weyl semimetal NbAs.

A new type of cyclotron orbit combining surface Fermi arcs and bulk states in topological semimetals has recently been proposed as Weyl orbit. Here, Zhang et al. report the evolution of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 nanoplates along with a quantum Hall state possibly arising from such Weyl orbit.

Fish propelled by body and/or caudal fin (BCF) locomotion can achieve high-efficiency and high-speed swimming performance, by changing their body motion to interact with external fluids. This flexural body motion can be prescribed through its curvature profile. This work indicates that when the fish swims with high efficiency, the curvature amplitude reaches a maximum at the caudal peduncle. In the case of high-speed swimming, the curvature amplitude shows three maxima on the entire body length. It is also demonstrated that, when the Reynolds number is in the range of 104–106, the swimming speed, stride length, and Cost of Transport (COT) are all positively correlated with the tail-beat frequency. A sensitivity analysis of curvature amplitude explains which locations change the most when the fish switches from the high-efficiency swimming mode to the high-speed swimming mode. The comparison among three kinds of BCF fish shows that the optimal swimming performance of thunniform fish is almost the same as that of carangiform fish, while it is better not to neglect the reaction force acting on an anguilliform fish. This study provides a reference for curvature control of bionic fish in a future time.

Clarifying the regional transmission mechanism of COVID-19 has practical significance for effective protection. Taking 103 county-level regions of Hubei Province as an example, and taking the fastest-spreading stage of COVID-19, which lasted from 29 January 2020, to 29 February 2020, as the research period, we systematically analyzed the population migration, spatio-temporal variation pattern of COVID-19, with emphasis on the spatio-temporal differences and scale effects of related factors by using the daily sliding, time-ordered data analysis method, combined with extended geographically weighted regression (GWR). The results state that: Population migration plays a two-way role in COVID-19 variation. The emigrants’ and immigrants’ population of Wuhan city accounted for 3.70% and 73.05% of the total migrants’ population respectively; the restriction measures were not only effective in controlling the emigrants, but also effective in preventing immigrants. COVID-19 has significant spatial autocorrelation, and spatio-temporal differentiation has an effect on COVID-19. Different factors have different degrees of effect on COVID-19, and similar factors show different scale effects. Generally, the pattern of spatial differentiation is a transitional pattern of parallel bands from east to west, and also an epitaxial radiation pattern centered in the Wuhan 1 + 8 urban circle. This paper is helpful to understand the spatio-temporal evolution of COVID-19 in Hubei Province, so as to provide a reference for similar epidemic prevention.

A ride control system (RCS) based linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and genetic algorithm (GA) design is presented, to reduce the heave, roll and pitch motion (three degrees of freedom motion (3 DOF motion)) of the wave piercing catamarans (WPC) in beam waves. A detailed 3 DOF ride control model which consists of the coupling and decoupling relationships between longitudinal and transverse motion is proposed for the WPC vessel. And the complex hydrodynamic coefficients and disturbances induced by beam waves are analyzed. Moreover, two stern flaps are designed for the system in the way of alternate flapping. In the controller design, the LQR method based on GA method is adopted to reduce the 3 DOF motion of the ship. Depending on the robust search mechanism and global optimum of GA, weighting parameters can be obtained to calculate the desired gain. Finally, the motion reduction and motion sickness incidence (MSI) results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed controller, and the comfort of passengers and crews can also be improved.

TEEG (3β,16β,23-trihydroxy-13,28-epoxyurs-11-ene-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside) is derived from the chloroform extract of the Chinese medicine formula Shenqi San (CE-SS). In the present study, we aimed to elucidate the anticancer effect and possible molecular mechanism underlying the action of TEEG against the human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell line A549 in vitro. A549 cells were incubated with different concentrations of TEEG. Cell proliferation was assessed by MTT assay. Autophagy was evaluated by immunofluorescence staining. Autophagy-associated proteins were examined by Western blot analysis. TEEG markedly inhibited A549 cell proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner. Immunofluorescence staining showed that TEEG induced autophagy in A549 cells. The LC3-II : LC3-I conversion ratio and the expression of Beclin-1, Atg5, Atg7, and Atg12 increased with the concentration of TEEG. In addition, increased TEEG concentration enhanced the expression of Class III p-PI3K and reduced the expression of Class I p-PI3K, p-AKT, p-mTOR, and p-P70S6K. These results indicate that TEEG induces autophagy of A549 cells through regulation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway.

This paper presents the robust stability analysis based on LMI for force feedback haptic interface systems with uncertain delay. A full-order state observer is introduced to estimate states of the haptic device so as to directly obtain the feedback force, which expands the stability range of the system environment parameters when comparing with that of the system without an observer. By using the delay partitioning idea and the augmented state vector, the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional is constructed, and then the new stability criterion based on LMI is given in the paper. With this new stability criterion, the observer gains can also be obtained directly. At last, a concrete example is used to prove the effectiveness and less conservativeness of this new approach.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most familiar chronic diseases threatening human health. Recent studies have shown that the development of diabetes is closely related to an imbalance of the gut microbiota. Accordingly, there is increasing interest in how changes in the gut microbiota affect diabetes and its underlying mechanisms. Immunomodulatory cells play important roles in maintaining the normal functioning of the human immune system and in maintaining homeostasis. Intestinal immunomodulatory cells (IICs) are located in the intestinal mucosa and are regarded as an intermediary by which the gut microbiota affects physiological and pathological properties. Diabetes can be regulated by IICs, which act as a bridge linking the gut microbiota and DM. Understanding this bridge role of IICs may clarify the mechanisms by which the gut microbiota contributes to DM. Based on recent research, we summarize this process, thereby providing a basis for further studies of diabetes and other similar immune-related diseases.

Microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) is required for the assembly and secretion of apolipoprotein (apo) B-containing lipoproteins. Previously, we demonstrated that the N-terminal 1,000 residues of apoB (apoB:1000) are necessary for the initiation of apoB-containing lipoprotein assembly in rat hepatoma McA-RH7777 cells and that these particles are phospholipid (PL) rich. To determine if the PL transfer activity of MTP is sufficient for the assembly and secretion of primordial apoB:1000-containing lipoproteins, we employed microRNA-based short hairpin RNAs (miR-shRNAs) to silence Mttp gene expression in parental and apoB:1000-expressing McA-RH7777 cells. This approach led to 98% reduction in MTP protein levels in both cell types. Metabolic labeling studies demonstrated a drastic 90–95% decrease in the secretion of rat endogenous apoB100-containing lipoproteins in MTP-deficient McA-RH7777 cells compared with cells transfected with negative control miR-shRNA. A similar reduction was observed in the secretion of rat endogenous apoB48 under the experimental conditions employed. In contrast, MTP absence had no significant effect on the synthesis, lipidation, and secretion of human apoB:1000-containing particles. These results provide strong evidence in support of the concept that in McA-RH7777 cells, acquisition of PL by apoB:1000 and initiation of apoB-containing lipoprotein assembly, a process distinct from the conventional first-step assembly of HDL-sized apoB-containing particles, do not require MTP. This study indicates that, in hepatocytes, a factor(s) other than MTP mediates the formation of the PL-rich primordial apoB:1000-containing initiation complex.
