Abstract

Rationally designed organic redox‐active materials have attracted numerous interests due to their excellent electrochemical performance and reasonable sustainability. However, they often suffer from poor cycling stability, intrinsic low operating potential, and poor rate performance. Herein, a novel Donor–Acceptor (D–A) bipolar polymer with n‐type pyrene‐4,5,9,10‐tetraone unit storing Li cations and p‐type carbazole unit which attracts anions and provides polymerization sites is employed as a cathode for lithium‐ion batteries through in situ electropolymerization. The multiple redox reactions and boosted kinetics by the D–A structure lead to excellent electrochemical performance of a high discharge capacity of 202 mA h g−1 at 200 mA g−1, impressive working potential (2.87 and 4.15 V), an outstanding rate capability of 119 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1 and a noteworthy energy density up to 554 Wh kg−1. Abstract

Single‐molecule white‐light and near‐infrared circularly polarized luminescent materials are effective complements to the demonstrated enhancements of visible emission in the high contrast 3D images or organic light‐emitting diodes. In this contribution, two binaphthalene‐containing luminogenic enantiomers (BIT or BITM) with aggregation‐induced emission are synthesized which exhibit circularly polarized luminescence in solution with dissymmetry factors of ±5.0 × 10−3 and ±4.8 × 10−3, respectively. Additionally, the dual‐fluorescence spectra of single‐molecule white emission (CIE: 0.33, 0.34) in toluene solution are observed with (R)/(S)‐BIT in low polarity solvent originating from locally excited and twisted intramolecular charge‐transfer emission. While (R)/(S)‐BITM only shows single NIR luminescence with peaks at 720 nm in powder state. The nondoped OLEDs exhibit high maximum external quantum efficiencies of up to 4.2% with small efficiency roll‐off and NIR electroluminescence peak at 709 nm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

16. Synchronous stabilization of Li–S electrodes by a 1T MoS2@AAO functional interlayer.

Abstract

The fast capacity decay and limited cycling life are the two main issues that hinder the practical applications of lithium–sulfur batteries. They are mainly caused by the shuttle effect of polysulfide species and the growth of big lithium dendrites occurring separately on the cathode and anode sides. To simultaneously tackle these problems, we explore a multifunctional interlayer integrating the aligned nanochannel structure of an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane with porous 1T MoS2 nanotubes (namely MoS2@AAO). Benefiting from the high electronic conductivity, sulfiphilic and lithiophilic properties of 1T MoS2, and the positive surface plus low tortuosity of the straight channels of AAO, the designed interlayer not only guarantees rapid ion/electron transfer and efficacious suppression of the polysulfide shuttle, but also achieves uniform and stable lithium deposition during cycling. Consequently, the MoS2@AAO interlayer exhibits a high capacity retention of 99.6% at 0.2C after 500 cycles and 90.6% at 1.0C after 1000 cycles. The prototype cathode with a sulfur loading of 5 mg cm−2 was also investigated, which exhibited over 96% retention of the initial discharge capacity at 0.1C after 50 cycles. 44. Design of carbon@WS2host with graham condenser-like structure for tunable sulfur loading of lithium-sulfur batteries

Abstract

Despite significant progress has been achieved regarding the shuttle-effect of lithium polysulfides, the suppressed specific capacity and retarded redox kinetics under high sulfur loading still threat the actual energy density and power density of lithium-sulfur batteries. In this study, a graham condenser-inspired carbon@WS2host with coil-in-tube structure was designed and synthesized using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane with vertically aligned nanopores as template. The vertical array of carbon nanotubes with internal carbon coils not only leads to efficient charge transfer across through the thickness of the cathode, but also provides significant confinement to polysulfide diffusion towards both the lateral and longitudinal directions. Few-layer WS2in the carbon coils perform a synergistic role in suppressing the shuttle-effect as well as boosting the cathodic kinetics. As a result, high specific capacity (1180 mAh/g at 0.1 C) and long-cycling stability at 0.5 C for 500 cycles has been achieved at 3 mgS/cm2. Impressive areal capacity of 7.4 mAh/cm2has been demonstrated when the sulfur loading reaches 8.4 mg/cm2. The unique coil-in-tube structure developed in this work provides a new solution for high sulfur loading cathode towards practical lithium-sulfur batteries.

Abstract

Searching new organic cathode materials to address the issues of poor cycle stability and low capacity in lithium ion batteries (LIBs) is very important and highly desirable. In this research, a 2D boroxine‐linked chemically‐active pyrene‐4,5,9,10‐tetraone (PTO) covalent organic framework (2D PPTODB COFs) was synthesized as an organic cathode material with remarkable electrochemical properties, including high electrochemical activity (four redox electrons), safe oxidation potential window (between 2.3 and 3.08 V vs. Li/Li+), superb structural/chemical stability, and strong adhesiveness. A binder‐free cathode was obtained by mixing 70 wt % PPTODB and 30 wt % carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a conductive additive. Promoted by the fast kinetics of electrons/ions, high electrochemical activity, and effective π–π interaction between PPTODB and CNTs, LIBs with the as‐prepared cathode exhibited excellent electrochemical performance: a high specific capacity of 198 mAh g−1, a superb rate ability (the capacity at 1000 mA g−1 can reach 76 % of the corresponding value at 100 mA g−1), and a stable coulombic efficiency (≈99.6 % at the 150th cycle). Abstract

A novel conjugated copolymer has been synthesized and employed as an organic cathode material in rechargeable lithium–ion batteries (LIBs). Due to the synergistic effects from conducting aniline and pyrene units, the resultant batteries based on the as‐obtained copolymer can deliver a promising reversible specific capacity of 113 mAh g−1 with a high voltage output of 3.2 V and a remarkable 75.2 % capacity retention after 180 cycles.
