Abstract Background To develop a laparoscopic training course that combines a smartphone application (APP) and virtual reality (VR), and initially evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of its implementation. Methods The Exploring Laparoscopy (Ex-Lap) app was developed to meet training demands. The course was designed by integrating the app with a VR simulator (LapSim®) and animal organ perfusion simulators. From January 2021 to December 2023, 91 participants were enrolled in the study and then divided into 5 separate batches to undergo the first stage of the course. The performance of the participants was evaluated by rating scale, the overall Training and Assessment of Basic Laparoscopic Techniques (TABLT) scores, and pass rates. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS 26.0, employing Kruskal-Wallis tests, Chi-squared analysis, and Fisher’s exact test, depending on the data type. Results The Staged Training and Assessment of Laparoscopic Skills (STALS) course was developed, consisting of three stages. The overall pass rates for the first stage across the five batches ranged from 85 to 100%, with no significant difference (P = 0.387). No significant differences were found in the scale scores or TABLT scores for the training tasks among students from different batches (all P > 0.05). Conclusions The STALS course is applicable in residency training, demonstrating satisfactory teaching effectiveness and replicability.

Abstract Meta-lenses composed of artificial meta-atoms have stimulated substantial interest due to their compact and flexible wavefront shaping capabilities, outperforming bulk optical devices. The operating bandwidth is a critical factor determining the meta-lens’ performance across various wavelengths. Meta-lenses that operate in a narrowband manner relying on nonlocal effects can effectively reduce disturbance and crosstalk from non-resonant wavelengths, making them well-suitable for specialized applications such as nonlinear generation and augmented reality/virtual reality display. However, nonlocal meta-lenses require striking a balance between local phase manipulation and nonlocal resonance excitation, which involves trade-offs among factors like quality-factor, efficiency, manipulation dimensions, and footprint. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the nonlocal meta-lens featuring Huygens’ bound states in the continuum (BICs) and its near-infrared imaging application. All-dielectric integrated-resonant unit is particularly optimized to efficiently induce both the quasi-BIC and generalized Kerker effect, while ensuring the rotation-angle robustness for generating geometric phase. The experimental results show that the single-layer nonlocal Huygens’ meta-lens possesses a high quality-factor of 104 and achieves a transmission polarization conversion efficiency of 55%, exceeding the theoretical limit of 25%. The wavelength-selective two-dimensional focusing and imaging are demonstrated as well. This work will pave the way for efficient nonlocal wavefront shaping and meta-devices.

Abstract Patients diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma (STS) often present at intermediate to advanced stages, with inherently limited therapeutic options available. There is an urgent need to identify novel therapeutic targets. In this study, by screening STS data from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Genotype Tissue Expression (GTEx) databases, KIFC1 is identified as a potential biomarker and a promising therapeutic target for STS. Notably, a significant increase in KIFC1 levels, which exhibited a strong correlation with a poor prognosis in STS patients is observed. The findings revealed that knockout of KIFC1 suppressed STS growth both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, KIFC1 is found to regulate cellular senescence in STS, which has not been reported before. that targeting KIFC1 induced cellular senescence via interacting with FXR1, an RNA‐binding protein is discovered, thereby further stabilizing MAD2L1 mRNA in an m6A‐dependent manner. Additionally, the suppression of KIFC1 markedly diminished the growth of patient‐derived xenografts (PDX) and triggered senescence. This study provides the first evidence that KIFC1 inhibition induces cellular senescence through MAD2L1, underscoring KIFC1 as a novel prognostic biomarker and a potential therapeutic target for STS.

Summary: Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection, with the highest single-cause mortality. Monocarboxylate transporter 4 (Mct4) transports intracellular lactate outside, but its role in regulating host immune response against Mtb infection remains unknown. Mct4 expression was upregulated in Mtb-infected macrophages and in patients with TB. Mct4 silencing/deficiency significantly decreased Mtb survival in macrophages and in lungs and spleens of mice, while Mct4 overexpression facilitated Mtb survival in macrophages. Furthermore, Mct4 promoted intracellular lactate transport, nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) p65 activation, and interleukin-10 (IL-10) production upon Mtb infection. Mechanistically, IL-10 silencing and IL-10-neutralizing antibody blocked Mct4 overexpressing increased Mtb survival. Replenishing lactate and NF-κB p65 inhibitor JSH23 treatment could inhibit Mct4 overexpressing increased NF-κB p65 activation, IL-10 production, and Mtb survival in macrophages. This study demonstrates that Mct4 promotes Mtb survival through restricting intracellular lactate accumulation to promote NF-κB p65-mediated IL-10 production and suggests Mct4-NF-κB p65-IL-10 axis a potential target for TB treatment.

The research objective is defined as the identification and confirmation of empirical relationships between shadow banking activities and economic development in developing and transitional economies to establish a theoretical basis for minimizing potential risks associated with shadow banking. The methodological design is based on a quantitative approach, implemented through correlation-regression analysis and ARIMA forecasting methods. The research findings confirm Hypothesis 1: China’s shadow banking is closely interconnected with the country’s economic development. However, Hypothesis 2 (the reduction of shadow banking in China contributes to per capita GDP growth) is only supported for specific structural elements of shadow banking that contribute to economic overheating. In contrast, for other structural elements, such as entrusted loans, a strong direct correlation exists, promoting a positive impact of shadow banking on the country’s economic development. This highlights the need for a highly balanced state policy to minimize shadow banking risks. The research results can be valuable for professionals in public administration and academic researchers, particularly in terms of shaping future research directions.

The aim of this study is to accurately evaluate the quality characteristics of whole tillage cropland and deepen the knowledge of sub-tillage soil quality evaluation in Jilin Province, China. In this study, top-tillage and sub-tillage soil samples were collected from 185 maize continuous cropping areas in Jilin Province, and 12 physicochemical indexes (pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total potassium (TK), available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK), sand, silt, and clay) were used to evaluate the whole tillage layer soil quality index (SQI). The results showed that the whole tillage soil physicochemical indexes in Jilin Province were generally above the moderate level, and nutrient contents increased from West to East among the regions. The minimum data set SQI (SQI-MDS) of the top-tillage and sub-tillage layers were 0.22–0.98 (0.46) and 0.23–0.93 (0.55), respectively. The suitable ranges of MDS parameters for reasonable tillage layers were as follows: top-tillage layer SOM ≥ 34.5 g kg−1, 31.5% ≤ sand ≤ 53.5%, AP ≥ 32.1 mg kg−1, and TK ≥ 15.18 g kg−1; sub-tillage layer 31.3% ≤ sand ≤ 51.2%, TN ≥ 1.48 g kg−1, 6.4 ≤ pH ≤ 7.1, and AK ≥ 157.6 mg kg−1. In summary, the SQI and evaluation indexes of the top-tillage and sub-tillage layers in different ecological zones are varied. It is necessary to adjust the evaluation index thresholds in combination with the actual conditions to establish a more accurate evaluation index system of the whole tillage soil quality.

ABSTRACT Through a long-term micro-area positioning experiment (2006-2017), the precise fertilization locations of spring maize (Zea mays L.) in Jilin, China, were investigated using an embedded cement bucket pot. The effects of different fertilization placements and additional application of organic manure on maize yield, biomass, grain nutrient uptake, and soil fertility were examined. Six treatments were designed: base fertilizer + topdressing shallow application (BF1TD1); base fertilizer deep + topdressing shallow application (BF2TD1); base fertilizer + topdressing deep application (BF1TD2); base fertilizer deep + topdressing deep application (BF2TD2); base fertilizer + topdressing + organic manure shallow application (BF1TD1 + OS); and base fertilizer + topdressing shallow application + organic manure deep application (BF1TD1 + OD). After 12 years of continuous experimentation, the findings revealed that BF2TD2, BF1TD1 + OS, and BF1TD1 + OD exhibited 10.59 %, 25.17 %, and 29.34 % higher average yields than BF1TD1, respectively. Deep topdressing was more beneficial in increasing maize yield and nutrient accumulation, and additionally, increasing the use of organic fertilizer enhanced plant biomass and nutrient uptake. Over the 12 years considered, the soil organic matter in the 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm layers increased by 45.96 % and 80.61 %, respectively, and the soil pH increased from 0.38 to 0.48. In general, the deep application of organic manure was more beneficial for soil retention as it can increase soil fertility in the 0-40 cm layer. Considering the high yield and nutrient absorption and utilization of maize, technical advancement for soil fertilizer in whole-field tillage layers was crucial.

Abstract Background Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is a promising biomarker for predicting relapse in multiple solid cancers. However, the predictive value of ctDNA for disease recurrence remains indefinite in locoregional gastric cancer (GC). Here, we aimed to evaluate the predictive value of ctDNA in this context. Methods From 2016 to 2019, 100 patients with stage II/III resectable GC were recruited in this prospective cohort study (NCT02887612). Primary tumors were collected during surgical resection, and plasma samples were collected perioperatively and within 3 months after adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT). Somatic variants were captured via a targeted sequencing panel of 425 cancer‐related genes. The plasma was defined as ctDNA‐positive only if one or more variants detected in the plasma were presented in at least 2% of the primary tumors. Results Compared with ctDNA‐negative patients, patients with positive postoperative ctDNA had moderately higher risk of recurrence [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.74, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.37–5.48; P = 0.003], while patients with positive post‐ACT ctDNA showed remarkably higher risk (HR = 14.99, 95% CI = 3.08‐72.96; P < 0.001). Multivariate analyses indicated that both postoperative and post‐ACT ctDNA positivity were independent predictors of recurrence‐free survival (RFS). Moreover, post‐ACT ctDNA achieved better predictive performance (sensitivity, 77.8%; specificity, 90.6%) than both postoperative ctDNA and serial cancer antigen. A comprehensive model incorporating ctDNA for recurrence risk prediction showed a higher C‐index (0.78; 95% CI = 0.71–0.84) than the model without ctDNA (0.71; 95% CI = 0.64–0.79; P = 0.009). Conclusions Residual ctDNA after ACT effectively predicts high recurrence risk in stage II/III GC, and the combination of tissue‐based and circulating tumor features could achieve better risk prediction.

The purpose of this study is to explore nonlinear and threshold effects of traffic statuses and road geometries, as well as their interactions, on traffic accident severity. In contrast to earlier research that primarily defined road alignment qualitatively as straight or curved, flat or slope, this study focused on the design elements of road geometry at accident locations. Additionally, this study considers the traffic conditions on the day of the accident, rather than the average annual traffic data as previous studies have done. To achieve this, we collected road design documents, traffic-related data, and 2023 accident data from the Suining section of the G42 Expressway in China. Using this dataset, we tested the classification performance of four machine learning models, including eXtreme Gradient Boosting, Gradient Boosted Decision Tree, Random Forest, and Light Gradient Boosting Machine. The optimal Random Forest model was employed to identify the key factors infulencing traffic accident severity, and the partial dependence plot was introduced to visualize the relationship between severity and various single and two-factor variables. The results indicate that the percentage of trucks, daily traffic volume, slope length, road grade, curvature, and curve length all exhibit significant nonlinear and threshold effects on accident severity. This reveals sepecific road and traffic features associated with varying levels of accident severity along the highway section examined in this study. The findings of this study will provide data-driven recommendations for highway design and daily safety management to reduce the severity of traffic accidents.

BackgroundThis study aimed to identify the associations between individual KRAS, STK11, KEAP1, or TP53 mutations, as well as the comutation status of these genes, and the tumor mutation burden (TMB) with clinical outcomes of lung adenocarcinoma patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs).MethodsWe collected data from patients with lung adenocarcinoma treated with ICIs from the Center for Cancer Genomics and Advanced Therapeutics (C-CAT) database between June 2019 and August 2023. The main endpoints were the treatment response and overall survival (OS).ResultsAmong 343 patients with lung adenocarcinoma, 61 (18%), 69 (20%), 41 (12%), and 222 (65%) patients had KRAS, STK11, KEAP1, and TP53 mutations, respectively. An overall objective response was observed in 94 of 338 patients (28%), including 2 (1%) who achieved a complete response and 92 (27%) who achieved a partial response. Patients with STK11, KEAP1, or TP53 mutations had a significantly greater TMB (PConclusionsSTK11, KEAP1, and TP53 mutations are significantly associated with a high TMB. TP53 mutation could affect the treatment response to some degree, and both KEAP1 and TP53 mutations resulted in inferior OS in the general patient population and in those with KRAS-wild-type lung adenocarcinoma, indicating that KEAP1 and TP53 mutations might act as prognostic factors for ICI treatment in lung adenocarcinoma patients.

The number of dispersion curves increases significantly when the scale of a short-period dense array increases. Owing to a substantial increase in data volume, it is important to quickly evaluate dispersion curve quality as well as select the available dispersion curve. Accordingly, this study quantitatively evaluated dispersion curve quality by training a convolutional neural network model for ambient noise tomography using a short-period dense array. The model can select high-quality dispersion curves that exhibit a ≤ 10% difference between the results of manual screening and the proposed model. In addition, this study established a dispersion curve loss function by analyzing the quality of the dispersion curve and the corresponding influencing factors, thereby estimating the number of available dispersion curves for the existing observation systems. Furthermore, a Monte Carlo simulation experiment is used to illustrates the station-pair interval distance probability density function, which is independent of station number in the observational system with randomly deployed stations. The results suggested that the straight-line length should exceed 15 km to ensure that loss rate of dispersion curves remains < 0.5, while maintaining the threshold ambient noise tomography accuracy within the study area.

Abstract The effects of different tillage management practices on the soil aggregates, soil carbon stock (STCS), and soil nitrogen stock (STNS) are key issues in agricultural research. We conducted an 8-year field experiment to evaluate the effects of different tillage methods: stubble cleaning and ridging (CK), no-tillage with stubble retention (NT), plow tillage (PT), and width lines (WL) on soil aggregates, STCS, and STNS in the black soil corn continuous cropping area of Northeast China. Different tillage methods predominantly affected the soil aggregates in the 2–0.25 mm and 0.25–0.053 mm size classes. The PT methods increased the proportion of macroaggregates and improved the quality of the soil aggregates. PT methods significantly increased the soil organic carbon content at the 0–30 cm layer by changing the number of soil macroaggregates. The PT practices are better strategies for enhancing soil carbon sinks, and the WL method increased the total amount of N in the soil pool. Our results suggest that the PT and WL methods are the best strategies for improving the quality of soil aggregates and preventing/reducing depletion of soil C and N in a black soil area of Northeast China.

Abstract Background Wound infection after inguinal hernia surgery is not uncommon in the clinical setting. The common microbial aetiology of postoperative inguinal hernia wound infection is Gram-positive bacteria. Staphylococcus aureus is a common pathogen causing wound infection while Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas are rare. Staphylococcus epidermidis as a cause of severe wound infection is rarely described in literature. We herein present a case of a 79-year-old man with a rare wound infection after bilateral inguinal herniorrhaphy caused by MRCNS (Methicillin Resistant Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus). Case presentation We present a case of wound infection accompanied by fever with a temperature of 38.8 °C after bilateral inguinal herniorrhaphy in a 79-year-old man. Bilateral inguinal wounds were marked by redness and swelling, with skin necrosis. In addition, an abscess of approximately 1.5 cm × 1.5 cm was seen on the left wrist. A small amount of gas under the skin in the wound area was observed after pelvic computed tomography (CT) scans. No bacteria were cultured from the inguinal wound discharge, while blood culture detected MRCNS, and Acinetobacter lwoffi was cultured from the pus in the left wrist. We chose appropriate antibiotics based on the results of the bacterial culture and the drug susceptibility results. Vacuum assisted closure (VAC) therapy was used after debridement. The patient was discharged after the wounds improved. He was followed up for ten months and showed no signs of complications. We are sharing our experience along with literature review. Conclusions We are presenting a rare case of MRCNS wound infection following open inguinal hernia surgery. Although a rarity, clinicians performing inguinal hernia surgery must consider this entity in an infected wound and follow up the patient for complications of MRCNS.

Background: Evidence specifically comparing the clinicopathology of Borrmann type IV (B-IV) gastric cancer with that of other Borrmann types is insufficient. Methods: A total of 3130 patients with advanced gastric cancer who underwent gastrectomy from January 2001 to September 2017 were enrolled in the analysis. Logistic regression and survival analysis methodology were used to investigate factors associated with peritoneal metastasis and overall survival (OS). Results: Of the total cohort, 264 (8.43%) patients were B-IV type, 1752 (55.97%) were small-size other Borrmann types, and 1114 (35.59%) were large-size other Borrmann types. Signet ring cell carcinoma (SRC) was more common in B-IV types than in other Borrmann types (33.71% vs 11.42% vs 12.66%, P < 0.001). In B-IV gastric cancers, SRC was significantly associated with peritoneal metastasis (HR = 1.898, 95% CI = 1.112 ~ 3.241, P = 0.019) and poorer OS (HR = 1.492, 95% CI = 1.088 ~ 2.045, P = 0.013) in multivariable analysis. Furthermore, stratified analysis revealed that SRC had worse survival than adenocarcinoma in the B-IV subgroups, with locally advanced stages (stages II ~ III) or negative surgical margins (all P < 0.05). In contrast, SRC failed to be significantly associated with peritoneal metastasis and poor OS in other Borrmann types (all P > 0.05). Conclusion: SRC was more common in B-IV gastric cancer than in other Borrmann types. It was significantly associated with peritoneal metastasis and poorer OS in the B-IV type but not in other Borrmann types. As a unique prognostic factor for B-IV gastric cancer, SRC might help evaluate risk stratification and optimize treatment for this entity, especially for patients with locally advanced stages or R0 resection.

With the support of spectral libraries, sparse unmixing techniques have gradually developed. However, some existing sparse unmixing algorithms suffer from problems, such as insufficient utilization of spatial information and sensitivity to noise. To solve these problems, this article proposes a novel hyperspectral unmixing algorithm, called superpixel-based weighted sparse regression and spectral similarity constrained unmixing. In the proposed method, a precalculated weight is introduced to help enhance sparsity of abundances, which is obtained from coarse abundance estimation. It also maintains spatial consistency in a local region of a hyperspectral image to mitigate the negative influence of noise. Additionally, the method selects optimal neighborhood pixels in the local region by combining spatial and spectral information and constructs a similarity matrix to explore spectral similarity in the subspace. Meanwhile, superpixel segmentation is considered as an auxiliary method to obtain local regions in the unmixing process. Experiments performed on synthetic and real data demonstrate that the proposed method achieves more accurate abundance estimation than other comparison algorithms.

Abstract The Paleocene‐Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; ∼56 Ma)–a geologically rapid carbon‐release event similar to anthropogenic carbon emissions–is ideal for investigating weathering responses to rapid carbon release and associated climate change. Here, for the first time, we present high‐resolution lacustrine lithium isotope data that reflect basin‐scale silicate weathering across the PETM in the Nanyang Basin, eastern China. Our results reveal an ∼100% increase in regional silicate weathering intensity through the PETM relative to the pre‐PETM level. Synchronous variations between carbon isotope values and weathering intensity demonstrate a strong coupling between carbon cycle, climate, and chemical weathering on millennial timescales. These findings argue that strong negative weathering feedback and massive removal of CO2 maintained Earth's climate within a habitable range during the PETM.

Several studies have highlighted the potential of pyroptosis as a target for cancer treatment. This article focuses on the specific roles and clinical implications of pyroptosis-related genes (PRGs) in soft tissue sarcoma (STS). By analyzing differentially expressed PRGs in STS compared to normal tissue, our study evaluates the interactions, biological functions, and prognostic values of PRGs in STS. Through LASSO COX regression analysis, a five-gene survival related-risk score (PLCG1, PYCARD, CASP8, NOD1, and NOD2) was created, which examined both in TCGA cohort and training cohort (GSE21050, GSE30929, and GSE63157). Furthermore, we developed a nomogram incorporating clinic factors and the risk scores of the PRGs, which showed decent accuracy of prediction as evidenced by calibration curves. Additionally, our study analyzed the Tumor Immune Dysfunction and Exclusion Algorithm (TIDE) and IMvigor 210 cohorts to investigate the immunotherapy response, and found that immunotherapy was more beneficial for patients with minimal risk of PRGs than those exhibiting greater risk. Finally, GDSC and CAMP databases were used to screen for effective chemotherapy or targeted drugs that are sensitive to the high-risk populations, including doxorubicin, imatinib, and sorafenib. In conclusion, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of the PRG landscape in STS and constructs a novel risk model to predict prognosis and different therapeutic responses of STS patients, which is helpful for achieving precision medicine.

Returning crop residues to the field after harvesting is a proven effective strategy for improving soil fertility, carbon sequestration, and crop productivity. However, the relationships between crop residue return modes, SOC and nutrient contents, and crop yields are still unclear. In this study, a field trial was conducted to investigate the effects of different maize straw return modes, i.e., straw mulching (SMU), straw deep ploughing (SDP), and control without straw return (CK), on soil organic carbon (SOC) and nutrient contents in soil layers of 0–40 cm in a Mollisol. The relationships between straw return modes, SOC and nutrient contents, and maize yield were evaluated. Compared with CK, SMU and SDP significantly increased SOC, total nitrogen (N), available N, total phosphorus (P), and available P contents in all soil layers. Relative to SMU, SOC, total N, available N, total P, and available P contents were significantly lower in soil layers of 0–10 cm, but they were significantly higher in soil layers of 20–40 cm in SDP. Redundancy analysis indicated that total N, available N, and SOC were major factors controlling maize yield. Structural equation modeling further showed that straw return modes indirectly affected maize yield by directly and preferentially affecting total N and available N contents. The results indicated that SMU and SDP were beneficial for increasing SOC and nutrient contents at the surface and subsurface soils, respectively. Optimizing a nitrogen management strategy is important to achieve high maize yield with straw return.

In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) type-II van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions have emerged as promising candidates for high-performance photodetectors. However, direct experimental evidence confirming the enhancement of photoelectric properties by the heterojunction’s type and structure remains scarce. In this work, we present flexible photodetectors based on individual GaSe and MoS2, as well as a vertically stacked type-II GaSe/MoS2 vdW heterojunction on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. These devices demonstrate outstanding responsivities and rapid response speeds, ensuring stable and repeatable light detection. It is notable that the GaSe/MoS2 heterojunction photodetector exhibits the highest on-off ratio and fastest response speed, attributed to the formation of type-II band alignment. Furthermore, the GaSe/MoS2 heterojunction photodetector maintains robust stability even in a bent state, highlighting remarkable flexibility. This work exemplifies the type-II vdW heterojunctions in enhancing photoelectric properties through direct in-situ experimentation, laying the groundwork for practical applications of 2D flexible photodetectors.

In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received significant attention due to their exceptional electrical and optical properties. Among these 2D materials, ReS2 distinguishes itself through its unique optical and conductance anisotropy. Despite concerted efforts to produce high-quality ReS2, the unique interlayer decoupling properties pose substantial challenges in growing large-area ReS2 thin films, with the preparation of single layers proving even more complex. In this work, large-scale continuous monolayer and bilayer ReS2 films were successfully grown on mica substrates using low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD). Photodetectors were fabricated using the prepared high-quality ReS2 films, and the devices presented stable photoresponse and enhanced response sensitivity. The production of continuous ReS2 atomic layers heralds promising prospects for large-scale integrated circuits and advances the practical application of optoelectronics based on 2D layered materials.

Abstract Background Although branched chain amino acid transaminase 1 (BCAT1) has been identified to play an essential role in multiple tumors, no studies on its role in pan‐cancer have been consulted before. Methods The study comprehensively analyzes the expression, potential mechanisms, and clinical significance of BCAT1 in pan‐cancer through utilizing 16,847 samples, providing novel clues for the treatment of cancers. A Kruskal–Wallis test and the Wilcoxon rank‐sum and signed‐rank tests were applied to investigate diverse BCAT1 expression between various groups (e.g., cancer tissues versus normal tissues). Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used in all correlation analyses in the study. Cox analyses and Kaplan‐Meier curves were utilized to identify the prognosis significance of BCAT1 expression in cancers. The significance of BCAT1 expression in differentiating cancer and non‐cancer tissues was explored via the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC). Results The differential expression of BCAT1 was detected in various cancers (p 0, p 0.7), indicating its potential to detect cancers. Further analyses on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma certified upregulated BCAT1 expression at both mRNA and protein levels in this disease based on in‐house tissue microarrays and multicenter datasets. Conclusions For the first time, the research comprehensively demonstrates the overexpression of BCAT1 in pan‐cancer, which improves the understanding of the pathogenesis of BCAT1 in pan‐cancer. Upregulated BCAT1 expression represented a poor prognosis for cancers patients, and it serves as a potential marker for cancer immunotherapy.

Meta-lenses are advanced optical devices composed of artificial nano-antenna arrays. Its flat, light-weight, ultra-thin, compact, customizable, and easy-to-integrate advantages enable widely potential usages in new demands. We demonstrate a GaN-based polarization-independent meta-lens-based camera on a drone. The diameter of the meta-lens is 2.6 mm, and the measured focal length is 5.03 mm under the 532 nm light incident. An array of the 750 nm height cylindrical nano-antennas with various sizes of the meta-lens provides the $2\pi $ phase modulation of the focusing phase distribution. The meta-lens is integrated with an image sensor and mounted on the drone to realize the aerial photography and landing assistance. By taking images of the specific pattern on the ground at different heights through the meta-lens, the flying height of the drone can be detected for landing and flying. We trust meta-lens-camera can reduce the weight burden for prolonging flight time. We believe the meta-lens-based optical devices for imaging and sensing is an important key for micro/nano-robots, micro air vehicles, and intelligent sensing devices in the future.

The middle segment of the Xiaojiang fault zone consists of strike-slip faults with frequent strong and medium–strong earthquakes under the joint influence of NE-trending faults and deep structural characteristics. The distribution characteristics of the deep subfaults of each branch need to be revealed. Two short-period dense array survey lines are deployed in the area. Shear wave velocity structures are obtained using ambient noise tomography. The results reveal that the faults in each branch dip nearly eastward, with strike-slip characteristics in the north‒south direction. Strong velocity lateral variation infer imply that the deformation characteristics of the upper crust may be brittle. NE faults are observed, which are characterized by typical compression. The high-velocity zone in the Songming Basin may be related to the deeper upwelling of high-velocity strata in the upper crustal flow.

Background. With the decreasing age of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) onset, the incidence of diabetic complications is gradually increasing. We evaluated the independent effect of age at diabetes onset on diabetic retinopathy (DR) development. Methods. A total of 7472 patients with T2DM were enrolled in the National Metabolic Management Center from September 2017 to May 2022. Anthropometry data, laboratory reports, and medical history were collected. The independent association of DR with age at diabetes onset was analyzed using multivariable logistic regression models. In addition, a stratified analysis was performed to determine the effect of confounding variables. Results. Of the 7472 patients recruited, 1642 (21.98%) had DR. Abstract Lymph node (LN) metastasis is known as one of the most important prognostic factors for early gastric cancer (EGC) patients. Patients without LNM normally have better prognosis. However, there is no evaluation criteria to accurately assess the possibility of LN metastasis. Therefore, this study aims to establish an effective nomogram for prognosis prediction. In this study, 285 EGC patients from January 2010 to December 2015 were enrolled. Pearson’s Chi-Square (χ 2) test (including continuity correction when appropriate) and logistics regression analyses was used to identify the risk factors for LN metastasis. The independent risk factors identified were then incorporated in a nomogram model. The predictive accuracy and discriminative ability of the nomogram were evaluated by receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and calibration curve. LN metastasis occurred in 59 (20.7%) EGC patients. And most of these patients were submucosal cancers (48/59). Chi-square test indicated lymphovascular emboli, carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9), ulcer, tumor size, tumor infiltration and histological grade were the risk factors, and multivariate logistics analyses confirmed all these six factors were independent risk factors of LN metastasis, which were selected to construct the nomogram. The nomogram proved well calibrated and had good discriminative ability (C-index value: 0.842). The proposed nomogram could result in more-accurate risk prediction for EGC patients.

Both Cryptosporidium spp. and Blastocystis sp. are common intestinal protozoa, which can cause zoonotic diseases and economic losses to livestock industry. To evaluate the prevalence and genetic population structure of Cryptosporidium spp. and Blastocystis sp. in beef and dairy cattle in Shanxi Province, north China, a total of 795 fecal samples were collected from beef and dairy cattle in three representative counties in Shanxi Province, and these fecal samples were examined using molecular approaches based on 18S small-subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) of Cryptosporidium spp. and Blastocystis sp., respectively. Among 795 cattle fecal samples, 23 were detected as Cryptosporidium-positive and 103 were detected as Blastocystis-positive, and the overall prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. and Blastocystis sp. in cattle in Shanxi Province was 2.9% and 13.0%, respectively. For Cryptosporidium spp., DNA sequence analysis indicated that all 23 positive samples were identified as C. andersoni. Furthermore, five known subtypes (ST1, ST10, ST14, ST21 and ST26) and three unknown subtypes of Blastocystis sp. were detected among 103 positive samples using DNA sequence analysis. This study reported the occurrence and prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. and Blastocystis sp. in cattle in Shanxi Province for the first time, which extends the geographical distribution of these two zoonotic parasites and provides baseline data for the prevention and control of these two important zoonotic parasites in cattle in Shanxi Province.

Monolayer MoS2 has emerged as a highly promising candidate for next-generation electronics. However, the production of monolayer MoS2 with a high yield and low cost remains a challenge that impedes its practical application. Here, a significant breakthrough in the batch production of wafer-scale monolayer MoS2 via chemical vapor deposition is reported. Notably, a single preparation process enables the growth of multiple wafers simultaneously. The homogeneity and cleanliness of the entire wafer, as well as the consistency of different wafers within a batch, are demonstrated via morphology characterizations and spectroscopic measurements. Field-effect transistors fabricated using the grown MoS2 exhibit excellent electrical performances, confirming the high quality of the films obtained via this novel batch production method. Additionally, we successfully demonstrate the batch production of wafer-scale oxygen-doped MoS2 films via in situ oxygen doping. This work establishes a pathway towards mass preparation of two-dimensional materials and accelerates their development for diverse applications.

Abstract Background Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated gastric carcinomas (EBVaGCs) present unique molecular signatures, but the tumorigenesis of EBVaGCs and the role EBV plays during this process remain poorly understood. Methods We applied whole-exome sequencing, EBV genome sequencing, and whole-genome bisulfite sequencing to multiple samples (n = 123) derived from the same patients (n = 25), which covered saliva samples and different histological stages from morphologically normal epithelial tissues to dysplasia and EBVaGCs. We compared the genomic landscape between EBVaGCs and their precursor lesions and traced the clonal evolution for each patient. We also analyzed genome sequences of EBV from samples of different histological types. Finally, the key molecular events promoting the tumor evolution were demonstrated by MTT, IC50, and colony formation assay in vitro experiments and in vivo xenograft experiments. Results Our analysis revealed increasing mutational burden and EBV load from normal tissues and low-grade dysplasia (LD) to high-grade dysplasia (HD) and EBVaGCs, and oncogenic amplifications occurred late in EBVaGCs. Interestingly, within each patient, EBVaGCs and HDs were monoclonal and harbored single-strain-originated EBV, but saliva or normal tissues/LDs had different EBV strains from that in EBVaGCs. Compared with precursor lesions, tumor cells showed incremental methylation in promotor regions, whereas EBV presented consistent hypermethylation. Dominant alterations targeting the PI3K-Akt and Wnt pathways were found in EBV-infected cells. The combinational inhibition of these two pathways in EBV-positive tumor cells confirmed their synergistic function. Conclusions We portrayed the (epi) genomic evolution process of EBVaGCs, revealed the extensive genomic diversity of EBV between tumors and normal tissue sites, and demonstrated the synergistic activation of the PI3K and Wnt pathways in EBVaGCs, offering a new potential treatment strategy for this disease.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2) is still a severe threaft for human health currently, and the researches about it is a focus topic worldwide. Aim of the study: In this study, we will collect some laboratory results of the patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to assess the function of liver, heart, kidney and even pancreas. Subjects and Methods: Laboratory results of the patients with COVID-19 are collected. The biochemical indices are classified and used to assess the according function of liver, heart, kidney; meantime, and blood glucose is also observed and taken as an index to roughly evaluate pancreas. Results: There were some indices exhibited abnormal. For patient 1, the ratio of albumin and globulin slightly was lower than the down-limit of reference range. For patient 2, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), creatine kinase (CK), creatinine kinase-MB isoenzyme (CK-MB), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), alpha-hydroxybutyric dehydrogenase (HBDH), and beta-2 microglobulin (β2-MG) were respectively higher than the according upper limit of the reference range, while prealbumin (PA) was lower than the down limit. For patient 3, GGT, CK, PA were high than normal range. For patient 4, CK, LDH, HBDH were higher than the upper range. Conclusion: Infection of SARS-Cov-2 could cause liver and heart injury, and it is suggested that clinicians and researchers should pay more attention on the prevention, treatment and causative mechanism of such an injury.

The shallow surface rock mass of the high and steep rock slopes in the existing highway (railway) projects, especially with severe weathering slope rock mass, is mostly cataclastic. After the traditional SNS active protective net is adopted to reinforce the slope, the rock slope has been locally unstable or subject to overall instability. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the structure and the corresponding design method for the reinforcement and protection of cataclastic rock slope. A new type of combination structure of anchor-pier active protection net as well as the stress calculation and design method is put forward, which can effectively prevent the destruction of cataclastic rock slope surface and ensure the overall stability of the slope. It can be seen from the engineering application that the combined protective structure has good reinforcing effect on the cataclastic rock slope, and it could be applied in the engineering construction.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome has spread to hundreds of countries and infected millions of people, causing more than a hundred thousand deaths. This study aimed to describe the epidemic characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 and its transmission in a city in China. Methods: This was a descriptive study on retrospective data collected from January to February 2020 from reports issued by the authority of Jining City, China, including data on travel history, transmission, gender, and age of infected persons. Results: During the period January and February 2020, 52 cases were confirmed to be SARS-CoV-2 infections with more than half were males (n=32, 61.5%) and and in the age grup of 31–50 yars old (53.8%). The modes of transmission were mostly primary infections (n=23) and a history of travel to and from outside of Shandong Province (n=14). Interestingly, the infection was the 4th transmission and most primary infectious persons did not transmit the virus to others. Conclusions: The key characters of infected people in Jining City in early epidemic time with the exception of exogenous inputs are male gender, city dweller, and middle-aged people of 31–50 years old. There is a restricted transmission in Jining City of China at the early phrase of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic, indicating that the strategy for the fight against SARS-CoV-2 is effective to some extent and worth to be learned by the members of the global village. This strategy includes actions such as home isolation, collective centralized quarantine, social distancing, and face mask use.

Abstract Acupuncture is an important alternative therapy in treating major depressive disorder (MDD), but its efficacy and safety are still not well assessed. This study is the first network meta-analysis exploring the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture, common pharmacological treatments or other non-medication therapies for MDD. Eight databases including PubMed, Embase, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, Cochrane Library, Wan Fang Data, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biology Medicine disc, and Chongqing VIP Database were searched up to Jan 17, 2021. Articles were screened and selected by two reviewers independently. We used the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach to assess the certainty of the evidence. A total of 71 eligible studies were included. The network analysis results indicated that the combined interventions of electro-acupuncture (EA) with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and manual acupuncture (MA) with SSRIs were more effective in improving depression symptoms compared with acupuncture alone, pharmacological interventions alone, or other inactive groups. Among all the regimens, EA with SSRIs was found to have the highest effect in improving depression symptoms of MDD. In addition, there were slight differences in the estimations of the various treatment durations. The combination of acupuncture and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) was found to be more effective than SNRIs alone. In conclusion, acupuncture and its combinations could be safe and effective interventions for MDD patients. EA with SSRIs seems to be the most effective intervention among the assessed interventions. Well-designed and large-scale studies with long-term follow-up should be conducted in the future.

Abstract Heterotrimeric G-proteins are key elements of signal transduction pathways, which participate in regulating multiple biological processes in fungi including growth, conidiation, antagonism, and mycoparasitism. Among G protein subunits, Gα3 showed diverse regulatory functions in different fungi. In this study, we cloned a Gα3 subunit coding gene thga3 from T. harzianum Th33 that can antagonize Rhizoctonia solani and some other plant pathogenic fungi. A thga3 deletion strain Δthga3 was generated using the double-crossover homologous recombination strategy, and Rthga3 was generated by transforming thga3-expressing vector into the protoplasts of Δthga3 by the PEG/CaCl2-mediated method. The biological characteristics of wild-type Th33, Δthga3 and Rthga3 were evaluated. Compared with wild-type Th33, Δthga3 showed 15%, 94%, and 23% decrease in hyphal growth, conidia yield, and chitinase activity, respectively, and Δthga3 showed lower antagonistic and mycoparasitism abilities, while there were no significant differences between wild-type Th33 and Rthga3. The hyphal surface hydrophobicity of Δthga3 significantly decreased compared with those of the wild-type Th33 and Rthga3. qRT-PCR analysis revealed that transcript abundance of the hydrophobin gene (tha_09745) of Δthga3 decreased by 80% compared with that of wild-type Th33 and Rthga3. The results showed that thga3 positively regulates the growth, conidiation, hydrophobicity, chitinase activities, and mycoparasitism of Th33 towards R. solani. We hence deduced that the expression level of Tha_09745 is correlated to the hyphal hydrophobicity of Th33 and therefore affects the other biological characteristics of Th33. The findings of this report provide a foundation for elucidating the G-protein signal regulatory mechanisms of fungi.

Tuberculosis (TB) caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection is the deadliest infectious disease and a global health problem. Macrophages (Mφs) and neutrophils that can phagocytose Mtb represent the first line of immune response to infection. Glycogen synthase kinase-3α/β (GSK-3α/β) represents a regulatory switch in host immune responses. However, the efficacy and molecular mechanisms of how GSK-3α/β interacts with Mtb infection in Mφs remain undefined. Here, we demonstrated that Mtb infection downregulated GSK-3α/β activity and promoted matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) and MMP-9 expressions in Mφs derived from acute monocytic human leukemia THP-1 cells (THP-1-Mφs). We confirmed the upregulation of MMP-9 expression in tissues of TB patients compared with patients of chronic inflammation (CI). In THP-1-Mφs and C57BL/6 mice, GSK-3α/β inhibitor SB216763 significantly increased MMP-1/9 production and facilitated Mtb load, while MMP inhibitors blocked MMP-1/9 expression and Mtb infection. Consistently, GSK-3α/β silencing significantly increased MMP-1/9 expression and Mtb infection, while overexpression of GSK-3α/β and constitutive activated GSK-3α/β mutants significantly reduced MMP-1/9 expression and Mtb infection in THP-1-Mφs. MMP-1/9 silencing reduced Mtb infection, while overexpression of MMP-1/9 promoted Mtb infection in THP-1-Mφs. We further found that GSK-3α/β inhibition increased Mtb infection and MMP-1/9 expression was blocked by ERK1/2 inhibitor. Additionally, we showed that protein kinase C-δ (PKC-δ) and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) reduced GSK-3α/β activity and promoted MMP-1/9 production in Mtb-infected THP-1-Mφs. In conclusion, this study suggests that PKC-δ-mTOR axis suppresses GSK-3α/β activation with acceleration of MMP-1/9 expression through phospho-ERK1/2. These results reveal a novel immune escape mechanism of Mtb and a novel crosstalk between these critical signaling pathways in anti-TB immunity.

Two types of Trichoderma longibrachiatum Tr58 propagules, conidia and chlamydospores, were added to soils with different moisture levels. The survival dynamics of Tr58 in soils were determined. There are positive linear relationships between soil moisture levels and germination rates of the two propagules. In natural non-sterilized soil, the germination of more than 95% conidia and 60% chlamydospores was inhibited, while a high soil moisture content and sterilization were beneficial to spore germination. The inhibitory effect of soil with 80% moisture content on the germination of chlamydospores was almost completely eliminated after sterilization. Twelve months after the conidia inoculated to the natural soil, the Tr58 propagules decreased continuously, which was hastened in soils with lower moisture content and almost near zero 24 months later, in all soils. In chlamydospore-amended soils, the Tr58 propagules generally showed a dynamic process of decreasing in the first month, increasing in the 2nd month, and then decreasing gradually. The average Tr58 content in chlamydospore-amended soils with 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80% moisture content was 19.2 times that of conidia-amended soils at 12 months. At 24 months, the Tr58 content was about 2.2% of the initial Tr58 content and 114 times that of conidia in soils with 20% moisture content. However, for 80% moisture content, the Tr58 content in soil was 0.0038% of the initial content of Tr58. According to the results of this study, 10–20% soil moisture content was the most favorable for the long-term survival of Tr58, and the survival ability of chlamydospores was stronger than that of conidia and had greater application potential in disease control.

BackgroundDespite the implementation of the 8th American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM staging system for gastric cancer (GC) in 2017, it still holds a significant level of stage migration which affects patients’ proper classification and accurate prognosis. Here, to reduce this effect, we evaluated the prognostic value of a lymph node ratio (LNR) and established a novel tumor–ratio–metastasis (TRM) staging system.MethodThe data of 15,206 GC patients from the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (Training set; n=2,032) and the US Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (Validation set; n=13,174) were analyzed. The training set was classified into 5 LNR categories, based on which the novel TRM staging system was constructed. The overall survival (OS) between the TRM and AJCC TNM systems was compared in the training set and validated in the validation set. The likelihood ratio x2, liner trend x2, C-index, and Akaike information criterion (AIC) values were used to measure the discriminatory ability between the two different staging systems. Decision curve analyses (DCAs) were conducted to test the clinical value of the two staging systems.ResultThe patients were classified into the following categories: LNR0: 0%, LNR1: 0%60%. Univariate analyses demonstrated that the log-rank x2 of the LNR stage (Training/Validation set: x2 = 463.1/2880.8) was larger than the AJCC pN stage (Training/Validation set: x2 = 281.5/2240.8). For both the training set and validation set, stratified analyses using the Kaplan-Meier method identified significantly heterogeneous OS in every pN category but only one using the LNR. The TRM staging system had higher likelihood ratio x2, liner trend x2, C-index and smaller AIC values than the TNM system.ConclusionThe TRM staging system demonstrated improved homogeneity and discriminatory ability in predicting the prognosis of GC patients compared with the AJCC TNM staging system.

Objective To elucidate the role and prognostic significance of lymphocyte activation-gene-3 (LAG-3) in soft tissue sarcoma (STS).Methods The expression of LAG-3 in patient and matched normal blood samples was analyzed by flow cytometry. The localization and prognostic values of LAG-3+ cells in 163 STS patients were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. In addition, the expression of tumor-infiltrating CD3+ T, CD4+ T, and CD8+ T cells and their role in the prognosis of STS were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. The effect of LAG-3 blockade was evaluated in an immunocompetent MCA205 fibrosarcoma mouse model.Results Peripheral CD8+ and CD4+ T cells from STS patients expressed higher levels of LAG-3 than those from healthy donors. LAG-3 expression in STS was significantly associated with a poor clinical outcome (P = 0.038 ) and was correlated with high pathological grade (P < 0.001), advanced tumor stage (P = 0.016). Additionally, LAG-3 expression was highly correlated with CD8+ T-cell infiltration (r = 0.7034, P < 0.001). LAG-3 was expressed in murine tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, and its blockade decreased tumor growth and enhanced secretion of interferon-gamma by CD8+ and CD4+ T cells.Conclusions LAG-3 blockade may be a promising strategy to improve the effects of targeted therapy in STS.

BackgroundUnplanned excision (UPE) of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is often chosen in the early phase by general physicians without any radiological evaluation.PurposeThe present study aimed to evaluate the impact of UPE on the clinical outcomes of patients with STS of the trunk and extremity.Materials and MethodsPatients with STS of the trunk and extremity who underwent R0 resection between 1998 and 2016 were included and divided into the UPE and planned excision (PE) groups. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to control the selection bias. The endpoints were disease-specific survival (DSS), local recurrence-free survival (LRFS), and metastasis-free survival (MFS).ResultsIn total, 458 patients (277 males, 181 females; median age: 43 years) were included: 329 (71.8%) in the PE group and 129 (28.2%) in the UPE group. The follow-up time ranged from 7.1 to 313.78 months, with a median of 112.18 months. UPE patients were more likely to have a smaller or superficial lesion and were more frequently administered adjuvant therapy. After PSM, compared with the PE group, the UPE group had a longer LRFS (P=0.015), but there was no difference between the two groups regarding DSS and MFS. Residual disease was observed in 77.5% of the re-resected specimens in the UPE group and was a risk factor for DSS (P = 0.046) and MFS (P = 0.029) but was not associated with local recurrence (LR) (P=0.475) or LRFS (P=0.334). Moreover, we found no difference in DSS, LRFS or MFS according to the interval from UPE to definitive resection.ConclusionSTS treated with UPE had distinct characteristics. Patients who undergo UPE followed by an additional wide R0 resection have similar oncological survival compared to patients who undergo an initial PE, although the high incidence of residual tumor in the UPE group leads to an unfavorable clinical course.

Background: As a debilitating neurodegenerative disease, neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) accounts for more than 90% of severe visual loss or legal blindness among AMD patients. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) had been applied widely in nAMD treatment. To date, debate regarding efficacy and safety still exists among different anti-VEGF regimens as management of nAMD. To provide substantial evidence for clinical nAMD treatment, this study ranks the priority of anti-VEGF regimens via Bayesian network meta-analysis (NMA), comparing data collected from randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Methods: We searched PubMed Central, MEDLINE Ovid, Embase Ovid, ISRCTN, ICTRP and ClinicalTrials. gov from a database established until 1 April 2019 systematically for anti-VEGF regimens. Bayesian NMA with random-effect was conducted to compare efficacy and safety and rank priority of anti-VEGF regimens. The primary efficacy and safety outcomes were the proportion of patients gaining 15 or more letters, and the incidence of arterial thromboembolic (ATC) events. The effect measure is the standard mean difference (SMD), or the odds ratio (OR) with their 95% confidence interval (CI). The study protocol is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42019132243. Results: We obtained 6467 citations and identified 29 RCTs including 13,596 participants; 86% of these trials were low risk or of uncertain risk bias. In NMA, ORs compared with sham injection for the proportion of patients gaining 15 or more letters (12,699 participants from 23 trials) ranged from 4.05 [95% Bayesian credible interval (CrI) 1.62–10.11] for ranibizumab quarterly regimen to 8.57 (95% CrI 4.66–15.73) for a ranibizumab treat-and-extend regimen. No difference was found between sham injection and anti-VEGF regimens for ATC events (11,500 participants from 18 trials). Abstract Background Coagulation and nutrition play important roles in cancer progression. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the prognostic value of the preoperative fibrinogen/albumin ratio (FAR) in surgical patients with soft tissue sarcoma (STS) and to compare this value with other inflammatory biomarkers. In addition, we investigated the relationship between FAR and the clinicopathological characteristics of STS patients. Methods We included 310 STS patients in this retrospective study. Kaplan-Meier curves, univariate and multivariate Cox proportional models were used in the prognostic analyses. Results According to the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, the optimal FAR cut-off value was 0.0726. The FAR exhibited a greater area under the curve (AUC) value (0.680) than did the NLR and PLR. An elevated FAR (≥0.0726) was significantly associated with an old age, large tumor size, deep tumor location, high tumor grade, and advanced American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stage. Patients with an increased FAR had a shorter median survival time and a lower 5-year overall survival (OS) rate than did those with a low FAR (61.0 vs115.8 months, P < 0.001; 56.7% vs 82.4%, P < 0.001, respectively). Multivariate analysis indicated FAR (Hazard ratio (HR) 1.907, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.161–3.132, P < 0.001) to be an independent prognostic factor for OS, as were tumor depth, grade and PLR. Conclusions Preoperative FAR is associated with tumor progression and can be considered an independent factor for OS of resected STS patients.

Data acquisition from multi-hop large-scale outdoor wireless sensor network (WSN) deployments for environmental monitoring is full of challenges. This is because of the severe resource constraints on tiny battery-operated motes (e.g., bandwidth, memory, power, and computing capacity), the data acquisition volume from large-scale WSNs, and the highly dynamic wireless link conditions in outdoor harsh communication environments. We present a novel compressed sensing approach, which can recover the sensing data at the sink with high fidelity when a very few data packets need to be collected, leading to a significant reduction of the network transmissions and thus an extension of the WSN lifetime. Interplaying with the dynamic WSN routing topology, the proposed approach is both efficient and simple to implement on the resource-constrained motes without motes' storing of any part of the random projection matrix, as opposed to other existing compressed sensing-based schemes. We further propose a systematic method via machine learning to find a suitable representation basis, for any given WSN deployment and data field, which is both sparse and incoherent with the random projection matrix in compressed sensing for data collection. We validate our approach and evaluate its performance using a real-world outdoor multihop WSN testbed deployment in situ. The results demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms existing compressed sensing approaches by reducing data recovery errors by an order of magnitude for the entire WSN observation field while drastically reducing wireless communication costs at the same time.
