Objective: While self-monitoring can help mitigate alcohol misuse in young adults, engagement with digital self-monitoring is suboptimal. The present study investigates the utility of two types of digital prompts (reminders) to encourage young adults to self-monitor their alcohol use. These prompts leverage information that is self-relevant (i.e., represents and is valuable) to the person. Method: Five hundred ninety-one college students (Mage = 18; 61% = female, 76% = White) were enrolled in an 8-week intervention study involving biweekly digital self-monitoring of their alcohol use. At baseline, participants selected an item they would like to purchase for themselves and their preferred charitable organization. Then, biweekly, participants were microrandomized to a prompt highlighting the opportunity to either (a) win their preferred item (self-interest prompt); or (b) donate to their preferred charity (prosocial prompt). Following self-monitoring completion, participants allocated reward points toward lottery drawings for their preferred item or charity. Results: The self-interest (vs. prosocial) prompt was significantly more effective in promoting proximal self-monitoring at the beginning of the study, Est = exp(.14) = 1.15; 95% confidence interval (CI) [1.01, 1.29], whereas the prosocial (vs. self-interest) prompt was significantly more effective at the end, Est = exp(-.17) = 0.84; 95% CI [0.70, 0.98]. Further, the prosocial (vs. self-interest) prompt was significantly more effective among participants who previously allocated all their reward points to drawings for their preferred item, Est = exp(-.15) = 0.86; 95% CI [.75, .97]. Conclusions: These results suggest that the advantage of prompts that appeal to a person's self-interest (vs. prosocial) motives varies over time and based on what reward options participants prioritized in previous decisions. Mobile technology offers new possibilities for assessing suicidal ideation and behavior in real- or near-real-time. It remains unclear how intensive longitudinal data can be used to identify proximal risk and inform clinical decision making. In this study of adolescent psychiatric inpatients (N = 32, aged 13-17 years, 75% female), we illustrate the application of a three-step process to identify early signs of suicide-related crises using daily diaries. Using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses, we considered the utility of 12 features—constructed using means and variances of daily ratings for six risk factors over the first 2 weeks postdischarge (observations = 360)—in identifying a suicidal crisis 2 weeks later. Models derived from single risk factors had modest predictive accuracy (area under the ROC curve [AUC] 0.46-0.80) while nearly all models derived from combinations of risk factors produced higher accuracy (AUCs 0.80-0.91). Panel count data describes aggregated counts of recurrent events observed at discrete time points. To understand dynamics of health behaviors and predict future negative events, the field of quantitative behavioral research has evolved to increasingly rely upon panel count data collected via multiple self reports, for example, about frequencies of smoking using in-the-moment surveys on mobile devices. However, missing reports are common and present a major barrier to downstream statistical learning. As a first step, under a missing completely at random assumption (MCAR), we propose a simple yet widely applicable functional EM algorithm to estimate the counting process mean function, which is of central interest to behavioral scientists. The proposed approach wraps several popular panel count inference methods, seamlessly deals with incomplete counts and is robust to misspecification of the Poisson process assumption. Theoretical analysis of the proposed algorithm provides finite-sample guarantees by expanding parametric EM theory [3, 34] to the general non-parametric setting. We illustrate the utility of the proposed algorithm through numerical experiments and an analysis of smoking cessation data. We also discuss useful extensions to address deviations from the MCAR assumption and covariate effects.
