Recent experiments on Fe

Recent experiments on Fe5GeTe2 suggested the presence of a symmetry breaking of its conventional crystal structure. Here, using density functional theory calculations, we elucidate that the stabilization of the (root 3 X root 3)R30 degrees supercell structure is caused by the swapping of Fe atoms occurring in the monolayer limit. The swapping to the vicinity of Te atoms is facilitated by the spontaneous occurrence of Fe vacancy and its low diffusion barrier. Our calculated magnetic exchange parameters show the simultaneous presence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange among a particular type of Fe atom. The Fe sublattice projected magnetization obtained from Monte Carlo simulations dearly demonstrates an exotic temperature-dependent behavior of this Fe type along with a large canting angle at T = 0 K, indicating the presence of a complex noncollinear magnetic order. We propose that the low-temperature crystal structure results from the swapping between two sublattices of Fe, giving rise to peculiar magnetization obtained in experiments.

We report on optically induced, ultrafast magnetization dynamics in the Heusler alloy ${\mathrm{Co}}_{2}\mathrm{FeAl}$, probed by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. Experimental results are compared to results from electronic structure theory and atomistic spin-dynamics simulations. Experimentally, we find that the demagnetization time (${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{M}$) in films of ${\mathrm{Co}}_{2}\mathrm{FeAl}$ is almost independent of varying structural order, and that it is similar to that in elemental 3$d$ ferromagnets. In contrast, the slower process of magnetization recovery, specified by ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{R}$, is found to occur on picosecond time scales, and is demonstrated to correlate strongly with the Gilbert damping parameter ($\ensuremath{\alpha}$). Based on these results we argue that for ${\mathrm{Co}}_{2}\mathrm{FeAl}$ the remagnetization process is dominated by magnon dynamics, something which might have general applicability.

The monolayer halides CrX_{3} (X=Cl, Br, I) attract significant attention for realizing 2D magnets with genuine long-range order (LRO), challenging the Mermin-Wagner theorem. Here, we show that monolayer CrCl_{3} has the unique benefit of exhibiting tunable magnetic anisotropy upon applying a compressive strain. This opens the possibility to use CrCl_{3} for producing and studying both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic 2D Ising-type LRO as well as the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) regime of 2D magnetism with quasi-LRO. Using state-of-the-art density functional theory, we explain how realistic compressive strain could be used to tune the monolayer's magnetic properties so that it could exhibit any of these phases. Building on large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we compute the phase diagram of strained CrCl_{3}, as well as the magnon spectrum with spin-wave theory. Our results highlight the eminent suitability of monolayer CrCl_{3} to achieve very high BKT transition temperatures, around 50 K, due to their singular dependence on the weak easy-plane anisotropy of the material.

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, as well as symmetric anisotropic exchange, are important ingredients for stabilizing topologically non-trivial magnetic textures, such as, e.g., skyrmions, merons and hopfions. These types of textures are currently in focus from a fundamental science perspective and they are also discussed in the context of future spintronics information technology. While the theoretical understanding of the Heisenberg exchange interactions is well developed, it is still a challenge to access, from first principles theory, the DM interaction as well as the symmetric anisotropic exchange, which both require a fully-relativistic treatment of the electronic structure, in magnetic systems where substantial electron-electron correlations are present. Here, we present results of a theoretical framework which allows to compute these interactions in any given system and demonstrate its performance for several selected cases, for both bulk and low-dimensional systems. We address several representative cases, including the bulk systems CoPt and FePt, the B20 compounds MnSi and FeGe as well as the low-dimensional transition metal bilayers Co/Pt(111) and Mn/W(001). The effect of electron-electron correlations is analyzed using dynamical mean-field theory on the level of the spin-polarized $T$-matrix + fluctuating exchange (SPTF) approximation, as regards the strength and character of the isotropic (Heisenberg) and anisotropic (DM) interactions in relation to the underlying electronic structure. Our method can be combined with more advanced techniques for treating correlations, e.g., quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization methods for the impurity solver of dynamical mean-field theory. We find that correlation-induced changes of the DM interaction can be rather significant, with up to five-fold modifications in the most distinctive case., Comment: 20 pages, 22 figures

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, DMI in short, represents an antisymmetric type of magnetic interactions that favour orthogonal orientation of spins and competes with Heisenberg exchange. Being introduced to explain weak ferromagnetism in antiferromagnets without an inversion center between magnetic atoms such an anisotropic interaction can be used to analyze other non-trivial magnetic structures of technological importance including spin spirals and skyrmions. Despite the fact that the corresponding DMI contribution to the magnetic energy of the system has a very compact form of the vector product of spins, the determination of DMI from first-principles electronic structure is a very challenging methodological and technical problem whose solution opens a door into the fascinating microscopic world of complex magnetic materials. We quantify the presence of spin-mixed states in ferromagnetic 3D transition metals by precise measurement of the orbital moment. While central to phenomena such as Elliot-Yafet scattering, quantification of the spin-mixing parameter has hitherto been confined to theoretical calculations. We demonstrate that this information is also available by experimental means. Comparison of ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism results show that Kittel's original derivation of the spectroscopic g factor requires modification, to include spin mixing of valence band states. Our results are supported by ab initio relativistic electronic structure theory.

The scenario of a metal-insulator transition driven by the onset of antiferromagnetic order in NaOsO$_3$ calls for a trustworthy derivation of the underlying effective spin Hamiltonian. To determine the latter we rely on {\it ab initio} electronic-structure calculations, linear spin-wave theory, and comparison to experimental data of the corresponding magnon spectrum. We arrive this way to Heisenberg couplings that are $\lesssim$45\% to$\lesssim$63\% smaller than values presently proposed in the literature and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in the region of 15\% of the Heisenberg exchange $J$. These couplings together with the symmetric anisotropic exchange interaction and single-ion magnetocrystalline anisotropy successfully reproduce the magnon dispersion obtained by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering measurements. In particular, the spin-wave gap fully agrees with the measured one. We find that the spin-wave gap is defined from a subtle interplay between the single-ion anisotropy, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange and the symmetric anisotropic exchange interactions. The results reported here underpin the local-moment description of NaOsO$_3$, when it comes to analyzing the magnetic excitation spectra. We have derived an expression of the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI), where all the three components of the DMI vector can be calculated independently, for a general, non-collinear magnetic configuration. The formalism is implemented in a real space—linear muffin-tin orbital—atomic sphere approximation (RS-LMTO-ASA) method. We have chosen the Cr triangular trimer on Au(111) and Mn triangular trimers on Ag(111) and Au(111) surfaces as numerical examples. The results show that the DMI (module and direction) is drastically different between collinear and non-collinear states. Based on the relation between the spin and charge currents flowing in the system and their coupling to the non-collinear magnetic configuration of the triangular trimer, we demonstrate that the DMI interaction can be significant, even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. This is shown to emanate from the non-collinear magnetic structure, that can induce significant spin and charge currents even with spin-orbit coupling is ignored.

The magnets are typically classified into Stoner and Heisenberg type, depending on the itinerant or localized nature of the constituent magnetic moments. In this work, we investigate theoretically the behaviour of the magnetic moments of iron and cobalt in their B2-ordered alloy. The results based on local spin density approximation for the density functional theory (DFT) suggest that the Co magnetic moment strongly depends on the directions of the surrounding magnetic moments, which usually indicates the Stoner-type mechanism of magnetism. This is consistent with the disordered local moment picture of the paramagnetic state, where the magnetic moment of cobalt gets substantially suppressed. We argue that this is due to the lack of strong on-site electron correlations, which we take into account by employing a combination of DFT and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Within LDA + DMFT, we find a substantial quasiparticle mass renormalization and a non Fermi-liquid behaviour of Fe-3d orbitals. The resulting spectral functions are in very good agreement with measured spin-resolved photoemission spectra. The coexistence of charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity in tantalum disulfide (2H-TaS$_2$) at ambient pressure, is boosted by applying hydrostatic pressures up to 30GPa, thereby inducing a typical dome-shaped superconducting phase. The ambient pressure CDW ground state which begins at TCDW = 76 K, with critically small Fermi surfaces, was found to be fully suppressed at Pc = 8.7GPa. Around Pc, we observe a superconducting dome with a maximum superconducting transition temperature Tc = 9.1 K. First-principles calculations of the electronic structure predict that, under ambient conditions, the undistorted structure is characterized by a phonon instability at finite momentum close to the experimental CDW wave vector. Upon compression, this instability is found to disappear, indicating the suppression of CDW order. The calculations reveal an electronic topological transition (ETT), which occurs before the suppression of the phonon instability, suggesting that the ETT alone is not directly causing the structural change in the system. The temperature dependence of the first vortex penetration field has been experimentally obtained by two independent methods and the corresponding lower critical field H$_{c1}$ was deduced. While a d wave and single-gap BCS prediction cannot describe our H$_{c1}$ experiments, the temperature dependence of the H$_{c1}$ can be well described by a single-gap anisotropic s-wave order parameter., 6 Pages, 4 figures

The authors use ultrashort laser pulses to generate a highly non-equilibrium excited state in simple metallic ferromagnets, iron and nickel, in order to elucidate the differences between magnetic excitations and magnons. Utilizing extreme ultraviolet light, with energies covering core-level excitations, corroborated with density functional theory calculations, the paper shows that each type of excitation provide a fingerprint in the experimental signal.

The perovskite system Pb(Fe1-xMnx)2/3W1/3O3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1, PFMWO) has been prepared by conventional solid-state reaction under different sintering conditions. Structures and phase composition as well as thermal, magnetic and dielectric properties of the compounds have been systematically investigated experimentally and by first-principles density functional calculations. A clean perovskite phase is established at room temperature for compositions 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4. Rietveld refinements of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction patterns demonstrate that the compounds crystallize in space group Pm-3m (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4). The degree of ordering of the Fe and W/Mn cations was found to depend on the concentration of Mn. First-principles calculations suggest that the structural properties of PFMWO are strongly influenced by the Jahn-Teller effect. The PFMWO compounds behave as relaxor ferroelectrics at weak Mn-doping with a dielectric constant that rapidly decreases with increasing Mn content. A low temperature antiferromagnetic G-type order with propagation vector k = (1/2,1/2,1/2) is derived from neutron powder diffraction data for the samples with x ≤ 0.4. However with increasing doping concentration, the magnetic order is perturbed. First-principles calculations show that the dominant exchange coupling is antiferromagnetic and occurs between nearest neighbor Fe atoms. When the system is doped with Mn, a relatively weak ferromagnetic (FM) interaction between Fe and Mn atoms emerges. However, due to the presence of this FM interaction, the correlation length of the magnetic order is greatly shortened already at rather low doping levels.

Femtosecond light pulses can directly and nearly instantaneously manipulate spins in half-metallic Heusler materials., Heusler compounds are exciting materials for future spintronics applications because they display a wide range of tunable electronic and magnetic interactions. Here, we use a femtosecond laser to directly transfer spin polarization from one element to another in a half-metallic Heusler material, Co2MnGe. This spin transfer initiates as soon as light is incident on the material, demonstrating spatial transfer of angular momentum between neighboring atomic sites on time scales < 10 fs. Using ultrafast high harmonic pulses to simultaneously and independently probe the magnetic state of two elements during laser excitation, we find that the magnetization of Co is enhanced, while that of Mn rapidly quenches. Density functional theory calculations show that the optical excitation directly transfers spin from one magnetic sublattice to another through preferred spin-polarized excitation pathways. This direct manipulation of spins via light provides a path toward spintronic devices that can operate on few-femtosecond or faster time scales.

We present an extensive experimental and theoretical study on the low-temperature magnetic properties of the monoclinic anhydrous alum compound BaMo(PO4)(2). The magnetic susceptibility reveals strong antiferromagnetic interactions theta(CW) = -167 K and long-range magnetic order at T-N = 22 K, in agreement with a recent report. Powder neutron diffraction furthermore shows that the order is collinear, with the moments near the ac plane. Neutron spectroscopy reveals a large excitation gap Delta = 15 meV in the low-temperature ordered phase, suggesting a much larger easy-axis spin anisotropy than anticipated. However, the large anisotropy justifies the relatively high ordered moment, Neel temperature, and collinear order observed experimentally and is furthermore reproduced in a first-principles calculations by using a new computational scheme. We therefore propose BaMo(PO4)(2) to host S = 1 antiferromagnetic chains with large easy-axis anisotropy, which has been theoretically predicted to realize novel excitation continua.

The interaction between lattice and spins is at the heart of an extremely intriguing ultrafast dynamics in magnetic materials. In this paper, we formulate a general nonequilibrium theory that disentangles the complex interplay between phonons and magnons in a THz laser-excited antiferromagnetic insulator. The theory provides a quantitative description of the transient energy flow between the spin and lattice subsystems, subject to magnon-phonon and phonon-phonon scatterings, giving rise to finite lifetimes of the quasiparticles and to the equilibration time of the system. We predict a kind of scattering process where two magnons of opposite polarizations decay into a phonon, previously omitted in the literature. The theory is combined with first-principles calculations and then applied to simulate realistic dynamics of NiO. The main relaxation channels and hot spots in the reciprocal space, giving the strongest contribution to the energy transfer between phonons and magnons are identified. The diverse interaction strengths lead to distinct coupled dynamics of the lattice and spin systems and subsequently to different equilibration timescales.

International audience; The magnetic propagation vector in delafossite CuCrO 2 with classical Heisenberg spins is calculated analytically as a function of exchange interactions up to fourth-nearest neighbors. Exchange interactions are estimated by a series of density functional theory calculations for several values of lattice distortion. Our calculations show that the magnetic propagation vector is directly affected by the considered distortions providing different stable commensurate or incommensurate magnetic configurations. A realistic set of exchange interactions corresponding to a 0.1% lattice distortion yields the experimental ground state with an incommensurate propagation vector q ∼ (0.329, 0.329, 0). We find that a very weak antiferromagnetic interlayer interaction favors an incommensurate ordering even in the absence of lattice distortion. Moreover, the exchange energy of a magnetic configuration of a finite crystal of CuCrO 2 with periodic boundary conditions is derived analytically. Based on that, highly accurate Monte Carlo simulations performed on CuCrO 2 confirm both the proposed analytical calculations and the density functional theory estimations, where we obtain excellent convergence toward the experimental ground state with a magnetic propagation vector q = (0.3288, 0.3288, 0).

Strained materials can exhibit drastically modified physical properties in comparison to their fully relaxed analogues. We report on the x-ray absorption spectra (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) of a strained NiFe2O4 inverse spinel film grown on a symmetry matched single crystal MgGa2O4 substrate. The Ni XAS spectra exhibit a sizable difference in the white line intensity for measurements with the x-ray electric field parallel to the film plane (normal incidence) vs when the electric field is at an angle (off-normal). A considerable difference is also observed in the Fe L 2,3 XMCD spectrum. Modeling of the XAS and XMCD spectra indicate that the modified energy ordering of the cation 3d states in the strained film leads to a preferential filling of 3d states with out-of-plane character. In addition, the results point to the utility of x-ray spectroscopy in identifying orbital populations even with elliptically polarized x-rays.

Single crystals of the multiferroic double-perovskite Pb2MnWO6 have been synthesized and their structural, thermal, magnetic and dielectric properties studied in detail. Pure perovskite-phase formation and stoichiometric chemical composition of the as-grown crystals are confirmed by X-ray single-crystal and powder diffraction techniques as well as energy-dispersive X-ray and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Detailed structural analyses reveal that the crystals experience a structural phase transition from the cubic space group (s.g.) Fm3̅m to an orthorhombic structure in s.g. Pn21a at about 460 K. Dielectric data suggest that a ferrielectric phase transition takes place at that same temperature, in contrast to earlier results on polycrystalline samples, which reported a transition to s.g. Pnma and an antiferroelectric low-temperature phase. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that a frustrated antiferromagnetic phase emerges below 8 K. Density functional theory based calculations confirm that the cationic order between Mn and W is favorable. The lowest total energy was found for an antiferromagnetically ordered state. However, analyses of the calculated exchange parameters revealed strongly competing antiferromagnetic interactions. The large distance between the magnetic atoms, together with magnetic frustration, is shown to be the main reason for the low value of the ordering temperature observed experimentally. We discuss the structure-property relationships in Pb2MnWO6 and compare these observations to reported results on related Pb2BWO6 perovskites with different B cations.

The European physical journal / B Condensed matter and complex systems : EPJ B EPJ B 92(8), 163 (2019). doi:10.1140/epjb/e2019-100149-9, Ceramic samples of the multiferroic perovskite Pb(Fe1−xScx)2∕3W1∕3O3 with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4 have been synthesized using a conventional solid-state reaction method, and investigated experimentally and theoretically using first-principle calculations. Rietveld analyses of joint synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction patterns show the formation of a pure crystalline phase with cubic (Fm3̅m) structure with partial ordering in the B-sites. The replacement of Fe by Sc leads to the increase of the cation order between the B′ and B′′ sites. As the non-magnetic Sc3+ ions replace the magnetic Fe3+ cations, the antiferromagnetic state of PbFe2∕3W1∕3O3 is turned into a ferrimagnetic state reflecting the different magnitude of the magnetic moments on the B′ and B′′ sites. The materials remain ferroelectric relaxors with increasing Sc content. Results from experiments on annealed and quenched samples show that the cooling rate after high temperature annealing controls the degree of cationic order in Pb(Fe1−xScx)2∕3W1∕3O3 and possibly also in the undoped PbFe2∕3W1∕3O3., Published by Springer, Heidelberg

The effects of nonmagnetic impurity doping on magnetic and ferroelectric properties of multiferroic delafossite ${\mathrm{CuCrO}}_{2}$ are investigated by means of density functional theory calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. Density functional theory calculations show that replacing up to $30%$ of ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$ ions by ${\mathrm{Ga}}^{3+}$ ones does not significantly affect the remaining Cr-Cr superexchange interactions. Monte Carlo simulations show that ${\mathrm{CuCr}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Ga}}_{x}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ preserves its magnetoelectric properties up to $x\ensuremath{\simeq}0.15$ with a spiral ordering, while it becomes disordered at higher fractions. Antiferromagnetic transition shifts towards lower temperatures with increasing $x$ and eventually disappears at $x\ensuremath{\ge}0.2$. Our simulations show that ${\mathrm{Ga}}^{3+}$ doping increases the Curie-Weiss temperature of ${\mathrm{CuCr}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Ga}}_{x}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$, which agrees well with experimental observations. Moreover, our results show that the incommensurate ground-state configuration is destabilized by ${\mathrm{Ga}}^{3+}$ doping under zero applied field associated with an increase of frustration. Finally, coupling between noncollinear magnetic ordering and electric field is reported for $x\ensuremath{\le}0.15$ through simulating $P\text{\ensuremath{-}}E$ hysteresis loops, which leads to ferroelectricity in the extended inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya model.

We present a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of Sr$_{3-x}$Y$_{x}$(Fe$_{1.25}$Ni$_{0.75}$)O$_{7-\delta}$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.75$). Experimentally, the magnetic properties are investigated using superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry and neutron powder diffraction (NPD). This is complemented by the theoretical study based on density functional theory as well as the Heisenberg exchange parameters. Experimental results show an increase in the N\'eel temperature ($T_N$) with the increase of Y concentrations and O occupancy. The NPD data reveals all samples are antiferromagnetically ordered at low temperatures, which has been confirmed by our theoretical simulations for the selected samples. Our first-principles calculations suggest that the 3D magnetic order is stabilized due to finite inter-layer exchange couplings. The latter give rise to a finite inter-layer spin correlations which disappear above the $T_N$.

The orbital contribution to the magnetic moment of the transition-metal ion in the isostructural weak ferromagnets $A{\mathrm{CO}}_{3}$ ($A=$ Mn,Co,Ni) and ${\mathrm{FeBO}}_{3}$ was investigated by a combination of first-principles calculations, nonresonant x-ray magnetic scattering, and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. A nontrivial evolution of the orbital moment as a function of the $3d$ orbitals filling is revealed, with a particularly large value found in the Co member of the family. Here, the coupling between magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom produced by the spin-orbit interaction results in a large single-ion anisotropy and a peculiar magnetic-moment-induced electron cloud distortion, evidenced by the appearance of a subtle scattering amplitude at space-group-forbidden reflections and significant magnetostrictive effects. Our results, which complement a previous investigation on the sign of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction across the series, highlight the importance of spin-orbit coupling in the physics of weak ferromagnets and prove the ability of modern first-principles calculations to predict the properties of materials where the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is a fundamental ingredient of the magnetic Hamiltonian.

An essential property of magnetic devices is the relaxation rate in magnetic switching which depends strongly on the damping in the magnetisation dynamics. It was recently measured that damping depends on the magnetic texture and, consequently, is a non-local quantity. The damping enters the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation as the phenomenological Gilbert damping parameter $\alpha$, that does not, in a straight forward formulation, account for non-locality. Efforts were spent recently to obtain Gilbert damping from first principles for magnons of wave vector $\mathbf{q}$. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no report about real space non-local Gilbert damping $\alpha_{ij}$. Here, a torque-torque correlation model based on a tight binding approach is applied to the bulk elemental itinerant magnets and it predicts significant off-site Gilbert damping contributions, that could be also negative. Supported by atomistic magnetisation dynamics simulations we reveal the importance of the non-local Gilbert damping in atomistic magnetisation dynamics. This study gives a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the magnetic moments and dissipation processes in real magnetic materials. We propose a new efficient permanent magnet, ${\mathrm{SmCoNiFe}}_{3}$, which is a development of the well-known ${\mathrm{SmCo}}_{5}$ prototype. More modern neodymium magnets of the Nd-Fe-B type have an advantage over ${\mathrm{SmCo}}_{5}$ because of their greater maximum energy products due to their iron-rich stoichiometry. Our new magnet, however, removes most of this disadvantage of ${\mathrm{SmCo}}_{5}$ while preserving its superior high-temperature efficiency over the neodymium magnets. We show by means of first-principles electronic-structure calculations that ${\mathrm{SmCoNiFe}}_{3}$ has very favorable magnetic properties and could therefore potentially replace ${\mathrm{SmCo}}_{5}$ or Nd-Fe-B types in various applications.

Motivated by the discovery of multiferroicity in the geometrically frustrated triangular antiferromagnet CuCrO$_2$ below its N\'eel temperature $T_N$, we investigate its magnetic and ferroelectric properties using ab initio calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. Exchange interactions up to the third nearest neighbors in the $ab$ plane, inter-layer interaction and single ion anisotropy constants in CuCrO$_2$ are estimated by series of density functional theory calculations. In particular, our results evidence a hard axis along the [110] direction due to the lattice distortion that takes place along this direction below $T_N$. Our Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the system possesses a N\'eel temperature $T_N\approx27$ K very close to the ones reported experimentally ($T_N = 24-26$ K). Also we show that the ground state is a proper-screw magnetic configuration with an incommensurate propagation vector pointing along the [110] direction. Moreover, our work reports the emergence of spin helicity below $T_N$ which leads to ferroelectricity in the extended inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya model. $La_xCa_{1-x}MnO_3$ (LCMO) has been studied in the framework of density functional theory (DFT) using Hubbard-U correction. We show that the formation of spin-polarons of different configurations is possible in the G-type antiferromagentic phase. We also show that the spin-polaron (SP) solutions are stabilized due to an interplay of magnetic and lattice effects at lower La concentrations and mostly due to the lattice contribution at larger concentrations. Our results indicate that the development of SPs is unfavorable in the C- and A-type antiferromagnetic phases. While the performance of magnetic tunnel junctions based on metal/oxide interfaces is determined by hybridization, charge transfer, and magnetic properties at the interface, there are currently only limited experimental techniques with sufficient spatial resolution to directly observe these effects simultaneously in real-space. In this letter, we demonstrate an experimental method based on Electron Magnetic Circular Dichroism (EMCD) that will allow researchers to simultaneously map magnetic transitions and valency in real-space over interfacial cross-sections with sub-nanometer spatial resolution. We apply this method to an Fe/MgO bilayer system, observing a significant enhancement in the orbital to spin moment ratio that is strongly localized to the interfacial region. Through the use of first-principles calculations, multivariate statistical analysis, and Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy (EELS), we explore the extent to which this enhancement can be attributed to emergent magnetism due to structural confinement at the interface. We conclude that this method has the potential to directly visualize spin and orbital moments at buried interfaces in magnetic systems with unprecedented spatial resolution.

International audience; We observe and explain theoretically a dramatic evolution of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in the series of isostructural weak ferromagnets, MnCO 3 , FeBO 3 , CoCO 3 , and NiCO 3. The sign of the interaction is encoded in the phase of the x-ray magnetic diffraction amplitude, observed through interference with resonant quadrupole scattering. We find very good quantitative agreement with first-principles electronic structure calculations, reproducing both sign and magnitude through the series, and propose a simplified " toy model " to explain the change in sign with 3d shell filling. The model gives insight into the evolution of the DMI in Mott and charge transfer insulators.

We show for a simple noncollinear configuration of the atomistic spins (in particular, where one spin is rotated by a finite angle in a ferromagnetic background) that the pairwise energy variation computed in terms of multiple-scattering formalism cannot be fully mapped onto a bilinear Heisenberg spin model even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. The non-Heisenberg terms induced by the spin-polarized host appear in leading orders in the expansion of the infinitesimal angle variations. Density functional theory augmented with Hubbard-$U$ corrections (DFT+$U$) is currently one of the widely used methods for first-principles electronic structure modeling of insulating transition metal oxides (TMOs). Since $U$ is relatively large compared to band widths, the magnetic excitations in TMOs are expected to be well described by a Heisenberg model. However, in practice the calculated exchange parameters $J_{ij}$ depend on the magnetic configuration from which they are extracted and on the functional used to compute them. In this work we investigate how the spin polarization dependence of the underlying exchange-correlation functional influences the calculated magnetic exchange constants of TMOs. We perform a systematic study of the predictions of calculations based on the local density approximation plus $U$ (LDA+$U$) and the local spin density approximation plus $U$ (LSDA+$U$) for the electronic structures, total energies and magnetic exchange interactions $J_{ij}$'s extracted from ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) configurations of several transition metal oxide materials. We report that, for realistic choices of Hubbard $U$ and Hund's $J$ parameters, LSDA+$U$ and LDA+$U$ calculations result in different values of the magnetic exchange constants and band gap. The dependence of the band gap on the magnetic configuration is stronger in LDA+$U$ than in LSDA+$U$ and we argue that this is the main reason why the configuration dependence of the $J_{ij}$'s is found to be systematically more pronounced in LDA+$U$ than in LSDA+$U$ calculations. We report a very good correspondence between the computed total energies and the parameterized Heisenberg model for LDA+$U$ calculations, but not for LSDA+$U$, suggesting that LDA+$U$ is a more appropriate method for estimating exchange interactions.

In this work, we present electronic and magnetic properties of CaMnO3 (CMO) as obtained from ab initio calculations. We identify the preferable magnetic order by means of density functional theory plus Hubbard U calculations and extract the effective exchange parameters (Jij's) using the magnetic force theorem. We find that the effects of geometrical relaxation at the surface as well as the change of crystal field are very strong and are able to influence the lower energy magnetic configuration. In particular, our analysis reveals that the exchange interaction between the Mn atoms belonging to the surface and the subsurface layers is very sensitive to the structural changes. An earlier study [A. Filippetti and W.E. Pickett, Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 4184 (1999)] suggested that this coupling is ferromagnetic and gives rise to the spin flip process on the surface of CMO. In our work we confirm their finding for an unrelaxed geometry, but once the structural relaxations are taken into account, this exchange coupling changes its sign. Thus, we suggest that the surface of CMO should have the same G-type antiferromagnetic order as in the bulk. Finally, we show that the suggested SF can be induced in the system by introducing an excess of electrons., 9 pages, 13 figures

We have performed first-principles calculations of the electronic and magnetic properties of insulating double perovskite compound ${\mathrm{La}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuRuO}}_{6}$ (LCRO) which has recently been reported to exhibit intriguing magnetic properties. We derived a tight-binding Hamiltonian for LCRO based on the $N\mathrm{th}$-order muffin-tin orbital (NMTO) downfolding technique. The computed on-site energies and hopping integrals are used to estimate the dominant exchange interactions employing an extended Kugel-Khomskii model. This way the dominant exchange paths were identified and a low-energy spin model was proposed. The Green function method based on the magnetic force theorem has also been used to extract the exchange interactions to provide a more accurate estimation and to justify the model calculations. Our results show that the nearest neighbor (NN) Cu-Ru magnetic interactions are very much direction dependent and a strong antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor Ru-Ru interaction along the crystallographic $b$ axis is responsible for the magnetic frustration observed experimentally in this system. We argue that due to the broken symmetry, NN Cu-Ru interaction becomes stronger along one direction than the other, which essentially reduces the amount of frustration and helps the system to achieve an antiferromagnetic ground state at low temperature. A detailed microscopic explanation of the exchange mechanism is discussed. We also find that spin-orbit coupling effect is significant and causes a canting of the Ru spin with respect to the Cu moments.

By means of first principles calculations we investigate the nature of exchange coupling in ferromagnetic bcc Fe on a microscopic level. Analyzing the basic electronic structure reveals a drastic difference between the $3d$ orbitals of $E_g$ and $T_{2g}$ symmetries. The latter ones define the shape of the Fermi surface, while the former ones form weakly-interacting impurity levels. We demonstrate that, as a result of this, in Fe the $T_{2g}$ orbitals participate in exchange interactions, which are only weakly dependent on the configuration of the spin moments and thus can be classified as Heisenberg-like. These couplings are shown to be driven by Fermi surface nesting. In contrast, for the $E_g$ states the Heisenberg picture breaks down, since the corresponding contribution to the exchange interactions is shown to strongly depend on the reference state they are extracted from. Our analysis of the nearest-neighbour coupling indicates that the interactions among $E_g$ states are mainly proportional to the corresponding hopping integral and thus can be attributed to be of double-exchange origin., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

NTRODUCTION The reproducibility of results is one of the underlying principles of science. An observation can only be accepted by the scientific community when it can be confirmed by independent studies. However, reproducibility does not come easily. Recent works have painfully exposed cases where previous conclusions were not upheld. The scrutiny of the scientific community has also turned to research involving computer programs, finding that reproducibility depends more strongly on implementation than commonly thought. These problems are especially relevant for property predictions of crystals and molecules, which hinge on precise computer implementations of the governing equation of quantum physics. RATIONALE This work focuses on density functional theory (DFT), a particularly popular quantum method for both academic and industrial applications. More than 15,000 DFT papers are published each year, and DFT is now increasingly used in an automated fashion to build large databases or apply multiscale techniques with limited human supervision. Therefore, the reproducibility of DFT results underlies the scientific credibility of a substantial fraction of current work in the natural and engineering sciences. A plethora of DFT computer codes are available, many of them differing considerably in their details of implementation, and each yielding a certain “precision” relative to other codes. How is one to decide for more than a few simple cases which code predicts the correct result, and which does not? We devised a procedure to assess the precision of DFT methods and used this to demonstrate reproducibility among many of the most widely used DFT codes. The essential part of this assessment is a pairwise comparison of a wide range of methods with respect to their predictions of the equations of state of the elemental crystals. This effort required the combined expertise of a large group of code developers and expert users. RESULTS We calculated equation-of-state data for four classes of DFT implementations, totaling 40 methods. Most codes agree very well, with pairwise differences that are comparable to those between different high-precision experiments. Even in the case of pseudization approaches, which largely depend on the atomic potentials used, a similar precision can be obtained as when using the full potential. The remaining deviations are due to subtle effects, such as specific numerical implementations or the treatment of relativistic terms. CONCLUSION Our work demonstrates that the precision of DFT implementations can be determined, even in the absence of one absolute reference code. Although this was not the case 5 to 10 years ago, most of the commonly used codes and methods are now found to predict essentially identical results. The established precision of DFT codes not only ensures the reproducibility of DFT predictions but also puts several past and future developments on a firmer footing. Any newly developed methodology can now be tested against the benchmark to verify whether it reaches the same level of precision. New DFT applications can be shown to have used a sufficiently precise method. Moreover, high-precision DFT calculations are essential for developing improvements to DFT methodology, such as new density functionals, which may further increase the predictive power of the simulations.

We have revisited the valence band electronic structure of NiO by means of hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) together with theoretical calculations using both the GW method and the local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) approaches. The effective impurity problem in DMFT is solved through the exact diagonalization (ED) method. We show that the LDA+DMFT method alone cannot explain all the observed structures in the HAXPES spectra. GW corrections are required for the O bands and Ni-s and p derived states to properly position their binding energies. Our results establish that a combination of the GW and DMFT methods is necessary for correctly describing the electronic structure of NiO in a proper ab-initio framework. We also demonstrate that the inclusion of photoionization cross section is crucial to interpret the HAXPES spectra of NiO.We argue that our conclusions are general and that the here suggested approach is appropriate for any complex transition metal oxide., 16 pages, 5 figures

The magnetic and structural properties of cobalt were investigated under high pressure (160 GPa) and low temperature (50 K), by synchrotron K-edge x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and x-ray diffraction. A quasihydrostatic equation of state was measured up to 160 GPa. We found that uniaxial stress plays a role in the hexagonal close packed-face centered cubic (hcp-fcc) structural transition pressure. Also, our data provide the first experimental evidence that changes of the $c/a$ ratio pressure derivative are related to the magnetic behavior. The complete extinction of ferromagnetism is observed above 130 GPa in a mixed hcp-fcc phase with no recovery upon cooling to 50 K, indicating that cobalt at 150 GPa is very likely nonmagnetic, i.e., characterized by zero local spin polarization. Density functional theory calculations point out that the K-edge x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) signal is related to the $4p$ orbital moment rather than to the total spin moment and allow us to get a deeper insight into the K-edge XMCD measurements interpretation. The combination of novel theoretical results and experimental outputs provides a detailed scenario of the structural and magnetic properties of cobalt at these extreme conditions answering some previously unsolved issues.

Temperature-dependent magnetic experiments like pump-probe measurements generated by a pulsed laser have become a crucial technique for switching the magnetization in the picosecond time scale. Apart from having practical implications on the magnetic storage technology, the research field of ultrafast magnetization poses also fundamental physical questions. To correctly describe the time evolution of the atomic magnetic moments under the influence of a temperature-dependent laser pulse, it remains crucial to know if the magnetic material under investigation has magnetic excitation spectrum that is more or less dependent on the magnetic configuration, e.g. as reflected by the temperature dependence of the exchange interactions. In this article, we demonstrate from first-principles theory that the magnetic excitation spectra in Co with fcc, bcc and hcp structures are nearly identical in a wide range of non-collinear magnetic configurations. This is a curious result of a balance between the size of the magnetic moments and the strength of the Heisenberg exchange interactions, that in themselves vary with configuration, but put together in an effective spin Hamiltonian results in a configuration independent effective model. We have used such a Hamiltonian, together with ab-initio calculated damping parameters, to investigate the magnon dispersion relationship as well as the ultrafast magnetisation dynamics of Co and Co-rich CoMn alloys.
