Abstract

In recent years, the movement advocating animal rights and welfare (animal rights movement), in parallel with the practice of ethical veganism, has become increasingly significant in Israel. Along with this trend, several studies examine and analyze the colonial aspects of the Israeli animal rights movement and its relevance to the Palestinian issue from the perspective of Critical Animal Studies. Critically examining preceding studies on veganism and colonialism, through analysis of the political discourses of leading activists and public figures within the newly popular Israeli vegan trend, as well as interviews with a sample of Israeli vegans, this article will demonstrate how veganism in Israel is associated with a narrative of Israeli national superiority. Such discourses may well be called 'vegan nationalism'. Vegan nationalism is a discursive and regulatory framework in which veganism is considered proof of the moral superiority of a nation in a settler colonialist context, implicitly stressing the barbarism and backwardness of the 'terrorists'. At the same time, as an article written by the Israel Defense Force indicates, in this framework, vegans present a welcome, appealing image that resonates even though it differs from the image of the stronger, more robust and powerful carnist traditionally favored by Zionists. Abstract

Although academic literature predominantly discusses UN centrism as Japan’s foreign policy, this thesis stipulates it as a popular norm supported by the Japanese public. The thesis employs the constructivist approach in understanding UN centrism as a domestic norm. Following the analytical methods employed in existing studies on norm diffusion, it identifies UN centrism is Japan’s interpretation of the international UN norms seen through the lens of its post-war domestic pacifist norm. Building on existing literature on civil society and Japanese studies, it analyses how civil movements supporting UNESCO and UNICEF have worked their way through Japanese society, traditional social behaviours and customs to diffuse the norm. The success of the civil movements has not been in spite of Japan’s weak civil society but because its characteristics have worked in their favour. The UN centrism norm at its core urges individuals to construct peace and international cooperation through the UN. The norm continues to develop, and today it has become a norm which not only urges ordinary Japanese to think about creating and maintaining peace through the UN, but also to make personal financial contributions to support UN humanitarian activities and even dictates where they should visit for their next holiday.

Abstract

A 71-year-old man with left flank pain was referred to our hospital. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a left renal tumor, left renal pelvic wall thickening, bilateral adrenal gland swelling, multiple pulmonary nodules, and a bone metastatic tumor. Further, positron emission tomography/CT revealed increased 18F fluorodeoxyglucose uptake in the left renal tumor, multiple pulmonary nodules, and bone metastatic tumor. Accordingly, we performed biopsies of the thickening of the left renal pelvic wall and bone metastatic tumor, and histological examinations revealed an unknown type carcinoma and bone metastasis from clear cell carcinoma. Without a precise preoperative diagnosis of the thickening of the left renal pelvic wall, laparoscopic left nephrectomy was performed, and the renal and renal pelvic wall tumors were diagnosed as clear cell carcinoma on pathological examination. Therefore, we made a final diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma with lung, bone, and renal pelvic metastases. Although axitinib was administered, cervical spine metastasis developed. Unfortunately, the patient died from disease progression five months following the surgery.

Abstract

Multiple myeloma (MM) is an invariably fatal form of cancer characterized by clonal proliferation of malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow. The canonical Wnt signaling pathway is activated in MM cells through constitutively active [beta]-catenin, a messenger molecule relevant to growth, survival, and migration of MM cells. The identification of a number of small molecular compounds, such as PKF115-584, which disrupt the interaction of the transcriptionally active [beta]-catenin/TCF protein complex, provides valuable new therapeutic tools to target an alternative pathway in MM independent of the proteasome. Here we evaluated the transcriptional, proteomic, signaling changes, and biological sequelae associated with the inhibition of Wnt signaling in MM by PKF115-584. The compound blocks expression of Wnt target genes and induces cytotoxicity in both patient MM cells and MM cell lines without a significant effect in normal plasma cells. In xenograft models of human MM, PKF115-584 inhibits tumor growth and prolongs survival. Taken together, these data demonstrate the efficacy of disrupting the [beta]-catenin/TCF transcriptional complex to exploit tumor dependence on Wnt signaling as a therapeutic approach in the treatment of MM. drug therapy | Wnt signaling
