Amaç: İzokinetik kas kuvveti ve tek bacak sıçrama testi diz cerrahileri sonrasında spora veya günlük yaşama dönüşte bireyleri değerlendirmek için sıklıkla kullanılan ölçümlerdir. Bu çalışmanın amacı verilen izokinetik eğitimin, hamstring ve quadriceps kas kuvveti üzerindeki etkinliğini tek bacak sıçrama testi kullanarak değerlendirmek idi. Yöntem: Ön Çapraz Bağ Rekonstrüksiyonu geçiren 20 erkek hasta çalışmaya dahil edildi. 16. ve 24. haftalarda izokinetik kas kuvveti ve tek bacak sıçrama testleri yapıldı ve bu haftalar arasında bireylere izokinetik eğitim verildi. Zirve tork quadriceps/vücut ağırlığı, zirve tork hamstring/vücut ağırlığı, hamstring/quadriceps oranı değerleri çalışmaya dahil edildi. İkili karşılaştırmada Wilcoxon testi, korelasyon analizinde Pearson korelasyon katsayısı kullanıldı. Bulgular: Opere dizde 16. haftasında, ekstansiyon zirve tork değeri ile tek bacak sıçrama testi arasında orta derecede ilişki görülürken (r=0,622, p=0,023), sağlam dizde, ekstansiyon zirve tork değeri ile tek bacak sıçrama testi arasında bir ilişki görülmedi (r=0,147, p=0,631). 24.haftada, opere ve sağlam dizdeki ekstansiyon zirve tork değeri ve tek bacak sıçrama testi arasındaki ilişki orta derece bulundu (r=0,595, p=0,032), (r= 0,591, p=0,033). 16. haftada hamstring/quadriceps oranı ile tek bacak sıçrama testi arasındaki ilişki yüksek bulundu (r=0,725, p=0,005). Sonuç: Çalışmanın sonucunda, ön çapraz bağ rekonstrüksiyonu sonrası verilen dirençli izokinetik eğitimin, tek bacak sıçrama performansını orta derecede etkilediği bulundu.

Introduction The purpose of this study was to identify the relation of daily prosthesis usage time (DPUT) of individuals with amputation with quality of life (QoL) questionnaires. Methods The research was carried out on 125 individuals with amputation. Prosthetic-related parameters were searched, as well as demographic data. A generic (Nottingham Health Profile [NHP]) questionnaire and a questionnaire specific to individuals with amputation (Trinity Amputation and Prosthesis Experience Scales [TAPES]) QoL measurements were used. Results Ninety-one males and 28 females with a mean age of 42.4 ± 14.7 years participated in the study. The average DPUT was 11.1 ± 4.4 hrs/d. Study results showed that there was significant correlation between both of the QoL questionnaires (NHP and TAPES) and DPUT. High correlation was determined between DPUT and NHP total score and NHP-Pain, and very high correlation was found between DPUT and NHP-Physical Activity subscale. A moderate negative correlation was found between DPUT and NHP-Energy Level, NHP-Emotional Reaction, NHP-Social Isolation, and NHP-Sleep. A moderate negative correlation was found between DPUT and TAPES-Activity Restriction. A high correlation was found between DPUT and residual limb pain, prosthetic satisfaction, time interval after amputation, and number of prosthetic fittings. A moderate correlation was found between DPUT and walking aids, whereas a poor relationship was shown between phantom pain and DPUT. Conclusions This study showed that "the average DPUT"may be used in terms of short assessment of QoL of individuals with amputation. The outcomes of this study pointed out that especially prosthetic-related parameters affected the QoL in individuals with amputation. In problems resulting from routine assessment and questionnaires having so many items, a single-item question, "the average DPUT,"may be used effectively in a shorter period and is helpful for organizing a rehabilitation program. Objectives: To investigate the influence of repeated cervical mobilization (CM) on balance and plantar loading distribution in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Methods: A total of 12 individuals were included in the cross over study designed as a cross sectional. The study was carried out from October 2019 until July 2020. Individuals received traditional treatment (TM) and cervical mobilization treatments (CM) 2 days a week for 4 weeks in a different order by random method. It was treated with joint traction and sliding techniques. Soft tissue mobilization techniques for myofascial relaxation were applied for CM in addition to TM. Romberg test (RT), Sharpened Romberg Test (SRT), and Functional Reach Test (FRT) were used to balance the assessment. Plantar loading distribution was evaluated with Pedobarography. The maximum and mean pressure in the foot, the percentages of pressure values in the fore and rear of the foot, and percentages of the bodyweight discharge onto right feet and left feet were recorded. Amaç: Doktora eğitimi, her mesleğin gelişiminde olduğu gibi fizyoterapi mesleğinin gelişimi için de oldukça önemlidir. Bu araştırma Türkiye’de fizyoterapi alanında yapılan doktora tezlerinin tematik ve metodolojik açıdan özelliklerini değerlendirmek amacıyla yapılmıştır.Yöntem: Bu çalışma kapsamında Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Yüksek Öğretim Kurulu’nun “Ulusal Tez Merkezi” resmi web sitesinde yer alan Fizyoterapi ve Rehabilitasyon alanında yapılan tezler tarandı. 1971 yılı ile 15 Ekim 2020 tarihleri arasında fizyoterapi ve rehabilitasyon alanında yapılan ve Yükseköğretim Kurumu elektronik tez arşivinde kayıtlı olan 422 doktora tezi incelenmiştir. Tezleri incelemede araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen tez inceleme formu kullanılmıştır.Sonuçlar: Türkiye’de fizyoterapi ve rehabilitasyon alanında doktora eğitimi verilen üniversite sayısı 19’dur. Doktora eğitimi veren 4 vakıf üniversitesi bulunmaktadır. İncelenen doktora tezlerinde, tez danışmanlarının %81 (n=341) profesör unvanına sahip olduğu belirlendi. Yapılan tezlerin örneklem sayı aralığının 8-1563 arasında değiştiği gözlendi. Alanlar açısından tezlere bakıldığında, en fazla tezin nöroloji alanında yapıldığı görüldü. Sonuç olarak bu çalışmanın ileride yapılacak olan doktora tezlerinin niteliğini arttırmaya katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir., Purpose: This research was conducted in order to evaluate the thematic and methodological characteristics of doctoral thesis in the field of physiotherapy in Turkey.Method: In this study, dissertations in the field of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, which are on the official website of the “National Thesis Center” of the Higher Education Council of the RepubliC of Turkey, were scanned. 422 doctoral dissertations conducted in the field of physiotherapy and rehabilitation between the dates of 1971 and October 15, 2020 were examined, which were registered in the Electronic dissertation archive of the higher education institution.Results: The number of universities having doctoral training in the field of physiotherapy and rehabilitation is 19 in Turkey. There are four foundation universities where doctoral education is given. It was determined that 81% (n=341) of the thesis consultants in the examined doctoral dissertations had the title of Professor. It was observed that the sample number in the thesis ranges from eight to 1563. When analyzed in terms of fields, it was seen that the most of the dissertations were conducted in the field of Neurology. It was determined that 329 of all researchers were female (78%) and 93 (22%) were male.Conclusion: We believe that it is important for physiotherapy students who receive or will receive doctoral education to take into account the priority areas, national and internationally accepted areas determined by the Council of Higher Education in the selection of the thesis subject. As a result, it is believed that this study will contribute to improving the quality of future doctoral dissertations.

Amaç: Bu araştırmanın amacı koruyucu meme cerrahisi geçiren hastalarda Meme Kanseri Tedavi Sonuçları Ölçeği (MKTSÖ) Türkçe versiyonunun, geçerlik ve güvenirliğini araştırmaktı. Yöntem: Çalışmaya, tek taraflı koruyucu meme cerrahisi geçirmiş 50 meme kanseri hastası dahil edildi. Anketin Türkçeye çevrilmesinin ardından güvenirliği ve iç tutarlılığı test edildi. Test-tekrar test güvenirliğini değerlendirmek ve sınıf içi korelasyon katsayısını (ICC) hesaplamak amacıyla anket tüm hastalara iki kez uygulandı. Cronbach alfa değeri anketin iç tutarlılığını belirlemek için hesaplandı. Ölçeğin kriter geçerliğinin belirlenebilmesi için MKTSÖ alt ölçekleri ile Avrupa Kanser Tedavisi ve Araştırmaları Örgütü-Hayat Kalitesi Ölçeği (EORTC-QLQ C30-BR23) alt ölçekleri korelasyonuna bakıldı. Bulgular: Anketin iç tutarlılığının analizinde, alt ölçekler için Cronbach alfa katsayıları 0,604-0,882 arasında bulundu. Test tekrar test güvenirliği mükemmel (ICC 0,941-1,000 arasında (%95 güven aralığında)) olarak bulundu. MKTSÖ ile EORTC-QLQ C30-BR23 alt ölçekleri arasında orta seviyeden yüksek seviyeye (r=-0,324-r=0,812 aralığında) korelasyon bulundu. En yüksek korelasyon kol semptomları ve MKTSÖ fonksiyonel seviye alt ölçekleri arasında bulundu (r: 0,812). C30 Emosyonel durum ve BR23 seksüel fonskiyon alt ölçekleri ile MKTSÖ’nin hiçbir alt ölçeği arasında korelasyon bulunmadı. Sonuç: Çalışmanın sonuçları MKTSÖ Türkçe versiyonunun, koruyucu meme cerrahisi geçirmiş hastalarda tedavi sonuçlarını fonksiyonel ve kozmetik açıdan değerlendirmede geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçüm aracı olduğunu göstermektedir.

Rationale and Objectives: There is no universally accepted standard technique for measuring the scapholunate interval and no specific sources of measurement error have been identified. We aimed to establish a set of normal radiological criteria for the scapholunate interval that could be used in comparative studies of wrist pathology to determine interobserver reliability and to identify potential errors that might influence measurements. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 healthy volunteers participated in the study. Scapholunate interval was measured by three independent observers using X-ray, CT, and US in four positions, including neutral, fist, radial and ulnar deviation. Inter-observer reliability was tested using intraclass correlation coefficient. Generalizability theory was applied to evaluate specific sources of measurement error related to participant, observer, imaging modality and measurement position. Results: In neutral position, the scapholunate interval measured by X-ray, CT, and US was 3.1 mm, 3.5 mm and 3.5 mm respectively. The interval remained constant during fist and radial deviation but decreased during ulnar deviation. Correlation coefficients ranged from 0.874 to 0.907 for X-ray, 0.773–0.881 for CT and 0.964–0.979 for US. In the generalizability study, the participant x modality x position interaction accounted for the largest proportion of total variance (29%). Conclusion: X-ray, CT, and US are reliable modalities for measuring the scapholunate interval, with US having the highest reliability. Participant and position factors may independently contribute to measurement error. Therefore, standardized measurement positions are recommended to obtain reliable measurement results. © 2022 The Association of University Radiologists

The aim of the study was to assess the characteristics of footwear altogether and to compare the effect of appropriate-fitting and ill-fitting footwear on functional performance, balance, and fear of falling (FoF) in older adults. Individuals who wore appropriate-fitting (n = 61) or ill-fitting footwear (n = 92) were enrolled in the study. Footwear was evaluated using the Footwear Assessment Scale (FAS). The participants were assessed using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) for balance, the Timed Up and Go test for functional performance and the Activities-specific Balance Confidence scale for FoF. Tests were conducted twice for each individual with or without footwear. Differences between the groups were analyzed using the MANOVA for scores of balance, performance and fear of falling and Chi-squared test for homogeneity. The Paired t-test was used to compare test scores with or without footwear. It was concluded that appropriate-fitting footwear improves balance, reduces fear of falling and may affect functional performance positively. ClinicalTrials.gov No: NCT04151654 © 2021 Elsevier Inc.

Knee joint proprioception is affected, and lower extremity functioning declines over time in patients with hemophilia A.To investigate the effects of a structured exercise programme consisting of the close kinetic chain (CKC) exercises on proprioception and physical activity level in pediatric patients with hemophilia.A total of 21 patients with hemophilia A who had at least one target knee joint were randomized into three groups: Study Group (SG, n = 7), Conventional Treatment Group (CTG, n = 7) and Control Group (CG, n = 7). The SG received a structured, lower limb-specific exercise protocol consisting of CKC exercises 2 days a week for 12 weeks, in addition to prophylactic treatment. The CTG received exercise training as described in the published literature. The CG continued to receive prophylactic treatment during the study period. Proprioception was measured using a digital goniometer before and after treatment in open and closed kinetic chain positions (CKCPs). The Five Times Sit to Stand (STS), Timed Up and Go (TUG) and Functional Independence Score in Hemophilia were used for the assessment of physical activity level.A significant pre/post-treatment difference was found among the groups in proprioception (p = .001) and physical activity level (TUG p = .008, STS p = .001, FISH p = .006). Improvements in proprioception and physical activity level were greater in the SG compared to the other two groups (p .05).Compared to conventional exercise, the structured exercise protocol consisting of CKC exercise training produced improvements in proprioception and physical activity in patients with hemophilia A.

Çalışmanın amacı, bireysel egzersiz ve grup egzersiz eğitiminin sağlıklı kadınlarda fiziksel performans üzerine etkilerini araştırmaktır. Çalışmaya bireysel egzersiz eğitimine katılacak 13 ve grup egzersiz eğitimine katılacak 13 kadın birey dahil edildi. Katılımcılara tedavi başında ve sonunda, genel bir demografik bilgi formunu doldurduktan sonra, fiziksel performans testleri uygulandı. Katılımcıların fiziksel performansları değerlendirilirken, kas gücünü ölçmek için Lafayette Manuel Kas Test Cihazı kullanıldı. Enduransı değerlendirmek için katılımcıların squat, mekik ve şınav pozisyonlarında kaldıkları süre kaydedildi. Burpee Testi ile çeviklik Otur-Uzan Testi esneklik değerlendirilmesi yapıldı. Her iki grupta yer alan bireylere egzersiz eğitimi 8 hafta haftada 3 seans olacak şekilde uygulandı. Gruplar arası karşılaştırmada Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test kullanıldı. Grupların kendi içinde tedavi öncesi ve tedavi sonrası farkın belirlenmesinde Mann Whitney U testi kullanıldı. Çalışma sonunda her iki grupta da kas kuvveti, endurans, çeviklik ve esneklik puanlarında artış görüldü (p0,05). Egzersiz eğitiminin bireysel veya grup halinde farketmeksizin fiziksel performans üzerinde olumlu etkileri vardır.

Background/aim: In our study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between the physical activity, sleep quality, depression severity and life satisfaction of university students during the Covid-19 pandemics. Materials and methods: 200 university students who agreed to participate in the study voluntarily were included. The students replied about the effects of pandemia process with Likert scale that 14 questions. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (Short Form) (IPAQ-SF), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Beck Depression Scale (BDI), Life Satisfaction Questionnaire (SLWS) were applied to students. Results: According to the results of the study; During Covid-19, it was determined that students' sitting time were increased, physical activity and exercise habits were decreased. It has been found that a decrease in physical activity level. It was originated that depression, lowers life satisfaction and disrupts the circadian rhythm. Conclusion: The personal telerehabilitation programs prepared by the physiotherapist are necessary for the protection of physical and mental health and it may help to regular the circadian rhythm on pandemic process.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine whether functional training had any effects on performance and related various physical components of basketball players. Materials and Methods: 28 athletes participated from first and second division professional basketball teams of one club. While first division basketball team players (n=14, average age: 26.6 ± 5.9 years) were assigned into functional training group (FTG), second division basketball team players (n=14, average age: 22.4 ± 4.2 years) were assigned into control group (CG). FTG completed a functional training program which included core strengthening and specific basketball task-related exercises with/without equipment. CG followed traditional strength training consisted of machine and free weight lifting based exercises. Both groups performed trainings for 20 weeks (2 days/week with 75-85 min. duration) along with the routine basketball practice. Anthropometric measurements, sit and reach flexibility test, 20 m speed test, T-drill and Lane-agility tests, horizontal and vertical jump tests, one-repetition maximum bench press and leg press strength tests were assessed before and after the 20-week program. Objectives: The aim of the present study was to explore the physiotherapy students’ attitudes towards online anatomy education during Covid-19 pandemic and thus to evaluate the possibile alternatives to improve online anatomy education. Methods: Sixty-four out of 78 first term physiotheraphy students (82%) participated in the study. Students were asked to participate voluntarily in an online survey composed of a Likert’s scale questionnaire. Results: The allocated study time of the students for Anatomy course decreased during the pandemic when compared to the time before the pandemic (p=0.014). The statement which was marked as ‘Totally Agree’ at the highest rate (46.9%) was ‘The questions given within the scope of the theoretical exam were consistent with the course contents’. The students also decided that the questions given within the scope of the theoretical exam were qualified to evaluate their level of anatomy. The marking rate of ‘Totally Agree’ option for this statement was 42.2%. In addition, the students ‘Totally agree’ at a rate of 40.6% that they felt less stressed in the exams of this course when compared to the first semester. Conclusion: It is anticipated that interactive lectures would be more helpful to teach anatomy. Moreover, it seems that anatomy education in physiotherapy and rehabilitation departments may need revisions to improve online anatomy education.

Objectives: Tendon stiffness may change depending on training and demands of sports discipline. It is important to assess tendon stiffness in order to understand tendon function during training adaptation or to optimize rehabilitation in pathological conditions. The aim of this study is to describe and to compare Achilles tendon (AT) mechanical (viscoelastic) properties of elite runners and soccer players, and demonstrate their relationship with plantar pressure. Materials and methods: A total of 17 soccer players (age: 25.8 ± 3.4 years) and 17 runners (age: 21.5 ± 4.0 years) participated in the study. Viscoelastic properties of their Achilles tendons were evaluated with a “MyotonPro” device. The measurement was performed 4 cm above the calcaneal tubercle in the prone position, while the athlete’s ankle hanged from the table in a neutral position. An “Ottobock Esco Scan” device and the “Presto-Scan” software were used for static foot pressure measurements of the athletes. The percentage of pressure figures were recorded. All evaluations were performed at the pre-season period (July-August 2018) at soccer clubs and federation facilities. Results: AT stiffness was found higher in soccer players than in runners, while elasticity was found lower (p0.05). There was no relationship of viscoelastic properties of the tendon with forefoot and rearfoot pressure in the groups. Conclusions: The storage and release of elastic energy in the Achilles tendon is important in sports and human movements. Long-term training in different sports can change the viscoelastic properties of the Achilles tendon. The plantar pressure may not affect these properties. Further studies are needed to evaluate tendon characteristics of athletes in different sports using myotonometric measurements.

Study design: Cross-sectional and clinical measurement. Objective: To evaluate upper extremity function and its relation to the curve pattern in idiopathic scoliosis. Summary of background data: Postural alterations and trunk distortions—caused by three-dimensional deformity itself in idiopathic scoliosis—may lead to functional changes in the upper extremity of subjects. Methods: Handgrip, pulp and lateral pinch strengths, hand dexterity, hand reaction time, coordination of upper extremity, upper extremity performance, throwing accuracy, and self-reported upper extremity disability were evaluated in 96 subjects. These subjects were divided into 3 groups: 47 with main thoracic curve pattern scoliosis (Lenke type 1), 31 with thoracolumbar/lumbar curve pattern scoliosis (Lenke type 5), and 18 unaffected (healthy control). Comparisons were performed between these three groups. Results: The thoracic scoliosis group showed a significant decrease in concave lateral pinch strength, concave hand dexterity of turning, coordination of the upper extremities, and concave hand reaction time than the thoracolumbar/lumbar scoliosis group (p < 0.05). Bilateral handgrip strengths decreased in thoracic scoliosis group when compared to healthy controls. Healthy individuals demonstrated greater throwing accuracy than individuals with scoliosis. Conclusions: Upper extremity function was found to be affected based on the curve pattern. Individuals with main thoracic curves are likely to have deteriorated upper extremity function, especially for hand-specific motor skills, on the concave side, when compared to lumbar curves and healthy controls. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of scapular repositioning using an elastic taping technique on the three-dimensional (3-D) shoulder and thoracic kinematics during various activities of daily living (ADLs) in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (IS). Methods: Shoulder and spine kinematics during five ADL movement tasks were assessed in 24 adolescents with IS (3 males and 21 females; mean age: 15.8 years; age range: 14–17 years) before and 15 min after elastic scapular taping. All the participants had a moderate curve magnitude (Cobb angle: 20°–45°), with a primary thoracic curve. A 3-D electromagnetic tracking system (Ascension Technology Corporation, Shelburne, VT, USA) was used to record 3-D shoulder and thoracic kinematics. ADL movement tasks included touching the mouth/drinking, touching the back, touching the contralateral shoulder, reaching upward, and bilateral 4-kg weight lifting. Two separate strips of elastic tape were applied using the same correction technique for each shoulder and scapular region to control scapular alterations in the resting position. Results: Elastic scapular taping significantly improved scapular external rotation and scapular upward rotation. Background In cycling, performance can change with the adaptation of the bicycle to the individual, as well as the physiological characteristics of the individual. Aim The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of exercise training and bike fitting on cycling performance in recreational cyclists. Methods A total of 16 recreational cyclists were included in the present study. Individuals were divided into 2 groups as intervention and control groups with a simple random method. To the intervention group, exercise training for 3 days a week for 8 weeks and bike fitting was applied with video analysis method. On the other hand, to the control group, only bike fitting was applied with video analysis method. Cycling performance was evaluated with Functional Threshold Power Test (FTP), Lactate Threshold Heart Rate (LTHR), 10 Mile Time Trial Test (10 Mile TT), and critical powertest. Evaluations were made twice, before and after the training. Results After 8 weeks of training, significant differences were found in FTP (p = 0.008), LTHR (p = 0.044), 10 Mile TT (p = 0.038), and critical power (p = 0.008) tests in intervention group, and in FTP (p = 0.028) in control group. When the cycling performances of the groups were compared, only LTHR results were found to decrease in favor of intervention group (p = 0.017). Conclusion The exercise program developed for recreational cyclists and individual adaptations for bicycle ergonomics are important in terms of increasing cycling performance. We believe that strength training provided along with bike fittng in cyclists will be beneficial particularly in reducing fatigue.

The aim of this study is to investigate physical activity, sleep quality, depression and life satisfaction in university students as a result of long-term follow-up in the COVID-19 process. This is a prospective one year follow-up study with 146 university students (98 female, and 48 male) who agreed to participate in the study voluntarily. The mean age of the students was 21.72±1.89 years. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Beck Depression Scale, Life Satisfaction Questionnaire was applied to students. Physical activity, sleep quality, depression, and life satisfaction were compared after one year with the same inventories. Physical activity levels showed similarity at the end of a one-year follow-up (P > 0.05). It has been found to increase sleep quality (P < 0.05). While there was no significant difference between depression levels and life satisfaction at the end of one year (P > 0.05). While the time they allocated for themselves decreased with the process, their sitting time increased (P < 0.05). The findings from this longitudinal study showed that physical activity levels, depression, and life satisfaction of university students did not change during the one year of social isolation due to COVID-19. However, it was observed that the spent in sleep and sleep quality of the individuals increased in the ongoing process.

BACKGROUND: Ataxia is a clinical syndrome characterized by coordination problems and postural disorders. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the effects of functional trunk training on trunk control and upper limb functions in autosomal recessive hereditary ataxia. METHODS: Twenty patients were randomly divided into treatment and control groups. Both groups received trunk stabilization and balance exercises, and the treatment group received additional functional trunk training sessions (3 days/week for 8 weeks). The International Cooperative Ataxia Rating Scale, Trunk Impairment Scale, Modified Functional Reach Test, Nine-Hole Peg Test and Quick-Disabilities of the Arm Shoulder and Hand questionnaire were used for assessments. RESULTS: The treatment group showed an increase in the upper limb performance bilaterally, whereas increased performance was seen only in the dominant upper limb in the control group. While the functional reach improved in the anterior-posterior (AP) and medial-lateral (ML) directions in the treatment group, it was improved only in the AP direction in the control group. Also, the mean changes in outcomes were not significantly different between the groups except for modified functional reach test. CONCLUSIONS: Functional trunk training may be a more effective method to improve upper limb performance and dynamic trunk balance in autosomal recessive hereditary ataxia.

Purpose: This case report investigated the effectiveness of an individualized physical therapy program in CALFAN syndrome. Case Description: A 13-year-old girl participated in physical therapy, which included trunk stabilization, balance training, and functional exercises for 12 weeks. Assessments: The International Cooperative Ataxia Rating Scale; Trunk Impairment Scale; Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory; Functional Independence Measure for Children; Quick Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand Questionnaire; 9-Hole Peg Test; and Cobb measurement were used as outcome measures. Results: Positive changes were observed in the International Cooperative Ataxia Rating Scale; Quick Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand Questionnaire; Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory; Trunk Impairment Scale; Functional Independence Measure; and the 9-Hole Peg Test. The Cobb angle was increased by 2° in the thoracic region and reduced by 11° in the lumbar region. Conclusions: Physical therapy improved quality of life, functional independence, trunk control, and upper extremity performance. BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported increased kinesiophobia in adults with degenerative scoliosis or adolescents who have undergone spinal surgery. However, little is known about the phenomenon of kinesiophobia among adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (IS). OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate levels of kinesiophobia and its association with treatment choice in IS. METHODS: The study included 98 IS patients with a mean age of 14 years and 20 healthy controls. Participants with IS were divided into groups based on treatment conditions, as follows: (1) untreated (n= 33); (2) treated with exercise (n= 32); and (3) treated with a brace (n= 33). Kinesiophobia was measured using the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK). Comparisons were made between four groups. RESULTS: Untreated participants with IS were found to have greater kinesiophobia than healthy controls (p< 0.001). Participants treated with a brace (p= 0.046) and exercise (p= 0.064) had similar kinesiophobia levels as the healthy control group. CONCLUSIONS: Kinesiophobia was found to be higher in adolescents with IS compared to healthy peers. Brace or exercise treatment both had a positive impact on kinesiophobia. These findings should be considered when organizing rehabilitation programs to achieve the best results for adolescents with IS.

Background: While some studies of the asymmetry of lower limbs in individuals with idiopathic scoliosis exist, there is a need for multidirectional studies conducted on hip joint range of motion and its relationship to curve patterns in idiopathic scoliosis. Objectives: This study analyzes the hip joint range of multidirectional motions, hip motion asymmetry and investigates them according to curve patterns in individuals with idiopathic scoliosis. Methods: The sample included 108 females with idiopathic scoliosis. Participants were divided into three groups: double curves, single thoracic curve and single lumbar curve. The range of hip flexion and extension, abduction and adduction, and internal and external rotations were assessed actively and passively with a universal goniometer. The range of motion, left-right asymmetry and the mid-points of the ranges of motion were analyzed. Results: The passive range of the right hip abduction was higher in the thoracic curve group vs. the lumbar curve group. Active and passive ranges of hip extension were higher in the left hip vs. right hip. Active left-right asymmetry was higher than passive left-right asymmetry. Conclusion: Individuals with idiopathic scoliosis had different hip abduction motions according to curve pattern that originated from single curves. Left-right hip asymmetry was seen for the hip extension motion. Higher left-right asymmetry for active motion than passive motion in hip abduction may indicate a problem in motion perception in individuals with idiopathic scoliosis. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Background: The study was to determine the relation of body mass index to muscular mechanical properties in normal and overweight individuals Methods: A total of 172 participants (86 males and 86 females, mean age; 26.00±5.45 years) were participated. The participants were assigned in groups base on BMI classification (normal (BMI=18.50-24.99 kg/m2), overweight (BMI=25.00-29.99 kg/m2). The biceps brachii (BB), biceps femoris (BF) were measured bilaterally using the "MyotonPRO" device. Results: Bilateral BB and BF stiffness, and BB elasticity were found significantly difference between normal and overweight group (p0.05). In sex based BMI sub-categories comprasion; the bilaterally BB and BF stiffness and BF tone were found higher, and only the right BB elasticity was decreased in overweight male group (p0.05).A weak positive correlation was found between the right-left BB tone and stiffness and BMI. Also, a weak positive correlation was revealed between the right BB elasticity (p0.05).Conclusions: The bilateral BB and BF stiffness increased and BB elasticity decreased as BMI increased. The BB and BF mechanical properties were affected more in males than females when BMI considered.

The mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) can lead to poor endurance and mobility, often associated with pain, restricted range of motion (ROM), low energy levels and fatigue, negatively affecting quality of life and activities of daily living. This study aimed to examine the impact of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) on aerobic capacity, functional independence and quality of life in children with MPS and to determine the anxiety and depression levels of their caregivers. Study Design established in Cross sectional study. Twelve children aged 3 to 11 years were included in the study. The subjects were divided into two groups according to the use of ERT. Quality of life and functional independence were assessed using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) and Functional Independence Measure for Children (WeeFIM). The 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and timed up and go test (TUG) were used to evaluate aerobic capacity. Anxiety and depression levels of parents were assessed using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), respectively. A total of 12 MPS patients 7 boys (58.3%) and 5 girls (41.7%) with a mean age of 5.58±2.67 years were included in the study.1 patient had MPS type I, 2 patients had MPS type III, 5 patients had MPS type IV, and 4 patients had MPS type VI. Six patients were receiving ERT. The children had a mean 6MWT score of 330.83±114.29, a mean TUG score of 14.24±5.71 sec, a mean PedsQL score of 46.83±14.03 and a mean WeeFIM score of 70.83±26.85. Their caregivers had a mean BAI score of 19.25±10.95 and a mean BDI score of 19.41±6.81. A significant difference was found between the children receiving ERT and those not receiving in the WeeFIM scores (P0.05). ERT did not change aerobic capacity and quality of children with MPS but increased their level of functional independence. Multisystem involvement in MPS children may affect anxiety and depression levels of their caregivers but ERT does not seem to have any effect on this psychosocial aspect.

There are several kinds of scoliosis-specific and general physiotherapeutic exercise methods used in scoliosis rehabilitation. But there is need for comparable studies on the effectiveness of different exercise approaches for the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.Comparison of the effects of combined core stabilization exercise and bracing treatment with Scientific Exercises Approach to Scoliosis and bracing treatment in patients with moderate adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.Thirty females with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, who have moderate curves (20°-45°), were randomly divided into two groups. In addition to brace wearing for 4 months, one group received core stabilization exercise therapy, while the other received scientific exercises approach to scoliosis exercise therapy. The outcome measures were based on Cobb angle, angle of trunk rotation, body symmetry, cosmetic trunk deformity, and quality of life.Thoracic and lumbar Cobb angles and trunk rotation angles, body symmetry, and cosmetic trunk deformity improved for both groups. Quality of life did not change in either group. The pain domain of the Scoliosis Research Society-22 questionnaire improved in the core stabilization group only.Both treatment conditions including core stabilization with bracing and scientific exercises approach to scoliosis with bracing had similar effects in the short-term treatment of moderate adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.This study showed that when scientific exercises approach to scoliosis (SEAS) and core stabilization (CS) exercises were administered with equal intensity, the effects of the two treatment protocols including CS and bracing and SEAS and bracing were similar in the treatment of patients with moderate adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS).

Background Exercise interventions in order to improve disease-related symptoms and improve quality of life in cancer patients are an approach that has received a lot of attention in recent years. The aim of our study is to investigate the effect of aerobic exercise on cancer recovery and to determine the change of cancer markers before and after treatment. Methods 70 women between 18–65 years were included in this study during chemotherapy. They were part of two groups; aerobic exercise (Group I) and control (Group II) groups. Their demographic features, quality of life and some cancer markers were evaluated. Assessments were done pre-chemotherapy and post-chemotherapy. In aerobic exercise group third a week aerobic exercises on submaximal level applied. A 12-week exercise program was planned, conducted under the supervision of a physiotherapist. Results As a result of this study, the quality of life in the aerobic exercise group was significantly higher in breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy treatment (p 0.05). In terms of post-treatment evaluation results, the women in Group I had a greater decrease in CEA, CEA 15 − 3, and CEA 19.9 values than the women in Group II (p

BACKGROUND: The instant effect of a brace on pulmonary functions of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is known. However, the permanent effects of its regular use are still unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether a brace in patients with AIS had a permanent effect on respiratory functions. METHODS: Fifteen patients with a mean age of 13.2 ± 1.6 years, and a major Cobb angle of 25.8°± 7.7° participated in this study. Lung volumes and respiratory muscle strength were measured with and without thoracolumbosacral brace, at the end of first month and follow-up period after the patients started using the brace for 23 hours daily. RESULTS: When the brace was on, the forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), ratio of FEV1/FVC, peak expiratory flow, and forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of vital capacity values were found to be lower at both first month and follow-up. After the follow-up, the measurement results did not differ from the results of the first month. CONCLUSIONS: The brace had a momentary restrictive effect on patients with AIS. Background: The study was to determine influence of body mass index on muscular mechanical properties in people with obesity.Methods: A total of 300 individuals (mean age: 27.31±7.21 years) were participated. The participants were assigned in groups base on BMI classification (Group 1 (BMI=18.50-24.99 kg/m2), Group 2 (BMI=25.00-29.99 kg/m2), and Group 3 (BMI≥30 kg/m2)). The biceps brachii (BB), biceps femoris (BF) were measured bilaterally using the "MyotonPRO" device. Results: All mechanical properties of the right and left BB muscle, left BF tone and stiffness were found significantly difference between groups (p Conclusions: The bilateral BB tone and elasticity decreased, and the left BF stiffness increased as BMI increased. Different mechanical properties were observed in sex comparasion base on BMI clasification. The BB and BF mechanical properties were affected more in males than females.

Objective: Motor imagery (MI) is the mental representation of a movement without any body movement, and it has been recently used as a therapeutic intervention in rehabilitation. The Movement Imagery Questionnaire-3 (MIQ-3) is the most recent, modified version of the MIQ-revised, second edition, which is commonly used to measure the imagery ability of patients with movement dysfunction. The purpose of the study was to translate the MIQ-3 into Turkish and evaluate its test and retest reliability and validity for the Turkish-speaking population. Methods: Among 185 healthy participants, 181 completed the procedures. The questionnaire was applied to 86 participants with 1-week interval to evaluate internal consistency and test–retest reliability. The construct validity of the MIQ-3 was tested by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results: The internal consistency of the Turkish MIQ-3 was satisfactory (Cronbach's alpha was 0.87 for test and 0.86 for retest reliability). The internal consistency of subscales for test–retest reliability (internal visual items, external visual items, and kinesthetic items) was 0.73–0.68, 0.74–0.72, and 0.79–0.73, respectively. Test–retest reliabilities of each item ranged from 0.84 to 0.95. In terms of criterion validity, there was an excellent correlation between subscales and total scale correlations, which ranged from 0.50 to 0.90 (P < 0.001). The validity of the MIQ-3 was examined with CFA, and the results supported a three-factor model of movement imagery ability. Conclusion: The Turkish MIQ-3 has an excellent reliability and good-to-excellent validity in evaluating MI ability.

An individual’s body awareness depends on the integration of bodily signals from both inside and outside the body. The etiology of idiopathic scoliosis includes a variety of somatosensorial and biomechanical alterations that may affect an individual’s body awareness. In this study, we investigated body awareness and its relation to quality of life among individuals with idiopathic scoliosis. We studied 96 participants with scoliosis and 71 healthy control participants. We evaluated both participant groups’ body awareness using the Awareness-Body-Chart, and we assessed the quality of life of those with scoliosis using the Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) questionnaire. The overall body awareness score and the body awareness values for the face, cervical/lumbar region, back, shoulder, upper arm, lower arm/elbow, hand, genital area, thigh/hip, lower leg, and foot were all found to be significantly lower among the participants with scoliosis than among healthy participants. Among participants with scoliosis, the body awareness value for the back region was positively correlated with pain, body image, mental health, and overall quality of life scores on the SRS-22, whereas the pain score on the Awareness-Body-Chart was negatively correlated with the function/activity, pain, mental health, and overall scores for the SRS-22. This study showed that participants with idiopathic scoliosis have poorer body awareness than control participants without scoliosis, and body awareness among participants with scoliosis was correlated with their self-reports of pain, body image, function, and mental health. These findings highlight the particular importance of body awareness to quality of life for individuals with scoliosis. © The Author(s) 2020.

Background In scoliosis, curve progresses due to muscle imbalance and poor posture. Basic body awareness therapy (BBAT) aims to improve posture, coordination, and balance by increasing body awareness, which may help decrease deformities. Objective This study aimed to investigate effects of Basic body awareness therapy (BBAT) on curve magnitude, trunk asymmetry, cosmetic deformity, and quality of life in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients. Methods Twenty female AIS patients were randomly assigned to BBAT and traditional exercises (TEs) groups. The BBAT group received BBAT and traditional exercises (TEs), while the TEs group received only TEs. The following assessments were included: Cobb angles using X-ray, angle of trunk rotation (ATR) using scoliometer, trunk asymmetry using the Posterior Trunk Symmetry Index (POTSI), cosmetic deformity using the Walter Reed Visual Assessment Scale (WRVAS), and quality of life using the SRS-22 test. Measurements were conducted at baseline examination and ten weeks later. Patients were instructed to wear their brace 23 h daily. Results were analyzed using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test to compare repeated measurements and Mann-Whitney U test to compare the groups. Results The BBAT group had greater improvement in the thoracic Cobb angle than the TEs group. Cosmetic deformity improved in both groups, whereas body asymmetry improved in only the BBAT group. SRS-22 scores were unchanged in both groups. Conclusions BBAT as an additive to bracing and TEs improve curve magnitude, body symmetry and trunk deformity.

Background: Evaluation of the effects of brace treatment on quality of life in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is important. Objectives: To analyze the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Brace Questionnaire. Study design: Cohort study, evaluation of reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Brace Questionnaire. Methods: Twenty-eight patients undergoing brace treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (median age: 14.6 years) were included in the study. The Brace Questionnaire was translated into Turkish and administered to the patients twice at an interval of 5 days. Reliability was assessed using the test-retest method (Pearson's correlation coefficient); internal consistency was analyzed using Cronbach's alpha. Validity was assessed by correlating the Brace Questionnaire with the Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire-Brace and Scoliosis Research Society-22 questionnaire. Results: The mean Cobb angles were 31.1 degrees 8.3 degrees and 29.7 degrees 9 degrees for thoracic and lumbar regions, respectively. Cronbach's alpha was 0.94. Intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.95 in test-retest reliability analysis. The correlations between Brace Questionnaire and Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire-Brace and Scoliosis Research Society-22 were r=0.67 and r=0.64, respectively. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the Brace Questionnaire to measure the effects of brace treatment on quality of life in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis was found to have good validity, excellent reliability, and high internal consistency. Clinical relevance We recommend routine use of the Brace Questionnaire in scoliosis patients to evaluate brace-related quality of life and relevant factors and to support the individual when necessary during such treatment.
