3. A brief discussion on the interference and elimination of rainfall to the water pipe inclinometer at Fengning station

Observation data of DSQ water pipe inclinometer and meteorology at Fengning seismic station from 2021 to 2023 were selected. Correlation analysis and convolution filter analysis were performed on rainfall and observation data, and convolution filter method and regression analysis were used to eliminate the lag effect of rainfall, and the relationship between rainfall and water pipe stress variables was judged. The results show that the trend change of the Fengning DSQ water pipe inclinometer was related to rainfall, and the daily variation of the observed data had a good linear relationship with the rainfall accumulation value, but did not obviously correlate with the instantaneous rainfall, and the response time had a lag of 1 day. Convolution filtering can better eliminate the step change caused by rainfall, but it failed to completely eliminate the southward inclination of NS and eastward inclination of EW after the rainfall of the water pipe meter from June to September 2021. Other factors may also affect the inclination of NS to S and EW to E of the water pipe meter.

5. In Vitro Screening of Trehalose Synbiotics and Their Effects on Early-Lactating Females and Offspring Mice

Activities such as childbirth and breastfeeding can cause severe oxidative stress and inflammatory damage to the mother during early lactation, and can affect animal milk production, and the growth and development of offspring. Trehalose alleviates damage to the body by endowing it with stress resistance. In this study, we used trehalose combined with Lactobacillus plantarum, Bifidobacterium longum, Bacillus subtilis, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae to explore whether dietary intervention can alleviate oxidative stress and inflammatory damage in early lactation and to evaluate the growth ability, acid production ability, antioxidant ability, non-specific adhesion ability, antibacterial ability, and other parameters to determine the optimal combinations and proportions. The results showed that the synbiotics composed of 2.5% trehalose and 1 × 107 cfu/g of Bifidobacterium longum could regulate the gut microbiota, and promote mammary gland development in dams by reducing progesterone (PROG) content in the blood, increasing prolactin (PRL) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) content, enhancing their antioxidant and immune abilities, and effectively increasing the weight and lactation of early lactating dams. In addition, it can also affect the growth of offspring and the development of the intestinal barrier. These results indicate that trehalose synbiotics have great potential in alleviating oxidative stress and inflammatory damage in early lactation.

6. Chemical characteristics, antioxidant capacity, bacterial community, and metabolite composition of mulberry silage ensiling with lactic acid bacteria

Mulberry has high crude protein and biologically active compounds but is difficult to be ensiled due to the lack of adequate epiphytic LAB. This study aimed to investigate the effects of inoculation with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Pediococcus pentosaceus isolated from mulberry with higher antioxidant capacity alone or in combination with Streptococcus bovis on chemical characteristics, antioxidant capacity, bacterial community, and metabolite composition of mulberry silage. The results showed that all inoculation groups had higher dry matter and lower pH than the control group, particularly in LP (dry matter, DM, 32.03% and pH = 4.44) and LP_PP_SB (DM, 31.68% and pH = 4.26) after 60 days of ensiling. Ammonia nitrogen (AN) content was the lowest in both LP_SB and LP_PP_SB groups, which were 1.86 g/kg FM and 1.05 g/kg FM, respectively, (P < 0.05). Only the LP_PP_SB group showed increased polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA, 1.2851 g/kg DM, P < 0.05) than the control group. Ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) values were increased in all inoculation-treated groups compared with the control group (P < 0.05). 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DDPH), 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), and FRAP exhibited the highest levels in the LP_PP- and LP_PP_SB-treated groups. Enterobacter was dominant in both the control and SB-treated groups, and the relative abundance was 41.18% and 32.35%, respectively (P < 0.05). The relative abundance of Lactiplantibacillus was higher in the LP-, LP_PP-, and LP_SB-treated groups (81.84%−82.69%). Relative abundance of Pediococcus was higher in the PP-, PP_SB-, and LP_PP_SB-treated groups (74.27%−85.27%). Untargeted metabolomics analysis results showed that five flavonoids (apigenin, eriodictyol, quercetin-3-glucoside, rutin, and kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside)were upregulated in all inoculation groups (except for the SB-treated groups). Among them, eriodictyol was both positively correlated with ABTS and FRAP and also showed the highest relative abundance in the LP_PP- and LP_PP_SB-treated groups. To the best of our knowledge, this study was the first to investigate the relationship between inoculants of epiphytic lactic acid bacteria and antioxidant capacity by 16s rRNA Illumina sequencing technology and untargeted metabolomics analysis, respectively. Consequently, inoculated L. plantarum, P. pentosaceus alone, respectively, or in combination with S. bovis increased the relative abundance of Lactiplantibacillus and Pediococcus and decreased the relative abundance of Enterobacter, particularly in the LP_PP_SB-treated group. In addition, inoculants could increase the relative abundance of five flavonoids (apigenin, eriodictyol, quercetin-3-glucoside, rutin, and kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside), especially eriodictyol to improve the antioxidant capacity of mulberry silage.

7. Raffinose Ameliorates DSS-Induced Colitis in Mice by Modulating Gut Microbiota and Targeting the Inflammatory TLR4–MyD88–NF-κB Signaling Pathway

This study aimed to explore the protective effects of raffinose (Raf) against inflammatory bowel disease in mice with colitis. Mice were administered 100, 200, or 400 mg/kg Raf for 21 d, followed by drinking-water containing 3% dextran sulfate sodium salt (DSS) for 3 d. Thereafter, the phenotype, pathological lesions in the colon, cytokines levels, and gut microbiota were evaluated. Treatment with Raf reduced the severity of the pathological changes in the colon, mitigating the reduction in colon length. Following Raf intervention, serum levels of inflammatory cytokines (IL-2, IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α) tended to return to normal. These results suggest that the anti-inflammatory effects of Raf are associated with a reduction in TLR4–MyD88–NF-κB pathway expression in mouse colonic tissues. Analysis of gut microbiota abundance and its correlation with colitis parameters revealed that DSS-induced dysbiosis was partially mitigated by Raf. In conclusion, Raf exerts a protective effect in colitis by modulating the gut microbiota and TLR4-MyD88-NF-κB pathway.

8. Quantitative Research on the Morphological Characteristics of Lunar Impact Craters of Different Stratigraphic Ages since the Imbrian Period

Impact craters serve as recorders of lunar evolutionary history, and determining the stratigraphic ages of craters is crucial. However, the age of many craters on the Moon remains undetermined. The morphology of craters is closely related to their stratigraphic ages. In the study, we systematically and quantitatively analyzed seven morphological parameters of 432 impact craters with known stratigraphic ages (Copernican, Eratosthenian, Imbrian), including crater depth, wall width, wall height, rim height, irregularity, volume, and roughness, as well as rock abundance. The study provided a range of morphological parameters for craters from the Copernican, Eratosthenian, and Imbrian. Additionally, we derived power law relationships between five morphological parameters and crater diameter, excluding irregularity and roughness. Furthermore, the transitional crater diameters from simple to complex crater morphology were determined for the Copernican and Eratosthenian, approximately 13 km and 15 km, respectively. These results suggest systematic differences in the lunar regolith in different stratigraphic ages. For impact craters of the same diameter, as crater age increases, irregularity tends to be greater, while crater depth, wall width, wall height, rim height, volume, roughness, and rock abundance tend to be smaller. Therefore, in cases where the diameter is determined, the actual values of morphological parameters and rock abundance can be used to constrain the stratigraphic age information of craters of an unknown age.

Abstract Stretchable conductive fibers have attracted much attention due to their potential use in wearable electronics. However, the ultra-high strain insensitive conductivity is hindered by mechanical mismatch in Young’s modulus and failure of stretchable structures under large deformation. This challenge is addressed with a conductive and elastic multifilament made of the polyurethane monofilaments that are surface-coated with buckled polypyrrole (PPy) of which flexibility is improved by sodium sulfosalicylate. Such parallel conductive monofilaments with PPy buckling on surface reduce the influence of cracks in the conductive coating on the overall conductivity, displaying an ultra-high strain insensitive behavior (quality factor Q = 10.9). Remarkably, various complex forms of wearable electronic textiles made by this conductive multifilament maintain the strain-insensitive behavior of the original multifilament, even upon the large deformation of human joint. This multifilament with wrinkled PPy has attractive advantages in the application of super-stretched wearable electronic devices.

10. The effect of hemolysis on quality control metrics for noninvasive prenatal testing

Abstract Background Noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is the testing of blood samples from pregnant women to screen for fetal risk of chromosomal disorders. Even though in vitro hemolysis of blood specimens is common in clinical laboratories, its influence on NIPT has not been well investigated. Methods Peripheral blood samples were collected from 205 pregnant women and categorized according to the concentration of free hemoglobin in the plasma. After performing NIPT using massively parallel sequencing, the quality control metrics were analyzed and compared with samples that did not undergo hemolysis or samples redrawn from the same women. Results The specimens were divided into four groups based on the concentration of free hemoglobin: Group I (0–1 g/L, n = 53), Group II (1–2 g/L, n = 97), Group III (2–4 g/L, n = 30), and Group IV (> 4 g/L, n = 25). There was no significant difference in the quality control metrics of clinical samples with slight or moderate hemolysis (Group II and III). However, samples with severe hemolysis (Group IV) showed a significantly increased rate of duplicated reads (duplication rate) and fetal fraction, as well as decreased library concentration compared with samples without hemolysis. Moreover, the increase in fetal fraction caused by hemolysis was confirmed by redrawing blood samples in Group IV. Conclusion For NIPT using massively parallel sequencing, samples with slight or moderate hemolysis (≤ 4 g/L) are acceptable. However, careful consideration should be taken regarding the use of severely hemolyzed samples (> 4 g/L), since they might increase the risk of test failure.

Global warming is caused by human activity, such as the burning of fossil fuels, which produces high levels of greenhouse gasses. As a consequence, climate change impacts all organisms and the greater ecosystem through changing conditions from weather patterns to the temperature, pH and salt concentrations found in waterways and soil. These environmental changes fundamentally alter many parameters of the living world, from the kinetics of chemical reactions and cellular signaling pathways to the accumulation of unforeseen chemicals in the environment, the appearance and dispersal of new diseases, and the availability of traditional foods. Some organisms adapt to extremes, while others cannot. This article asks five questions that prompt us to consider the foundational knowledge that biochemistry can bring to the table as we meet the challenge of climate change. We approach climate change from the molecular point of view, identifying how cells and organisms – from microbes to plants and animals – respond to changing environmental conditions. To embrace the concept of “one health” for all life on the planet, we argue that we must leverage biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biophysics and genetics to fully understand the impact of climate change on the living world and to bring positive change.

12. scRNA-seq reveals ATPIF1 activity in control of T cell antitumor activity

ATP synthase inhibitory factor 1 (ATPIF1) is a mitochondrial protein with an activity in inhibition of F1Fo-ATP synthase. ATPIF1 activity remains unknown in the control of immune activity of T cells. In this study, we identified ATPIF1 activity in the induction of CD8+ T cell function in tumor models through genetic approaches. ATPIF1 gene inactivation impaired the immune activities of CD8+ T cells leading to quick tumor growth (B16 melanoma and Lewis lung cancer) in ATPIF1-KO mice. The KO T cells exhibited a reduced activity in proliferation and IFN-γ secretion with metabolic reprogramming of increased glycolysis and decreased oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) after activation. T cell exhaustion was increased in the tumor infiltrating leukocytes (TILs) of KO mice as revealed by the single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and confirmed by flow cytometry. In contrast, ATPIF1 overexpression in T cells increased expression of IFN-γ and Granzyme B, subset of central memory T cells in CAR-T cells, and survival rate of NALM-6 tumor-bearing mice. These data demonstrate that ATPIF1 deficiency led to tumor immune deficiency through induction of T cell exhaustion. ATPIF1 overexpression enhanced the T cell tumor immunity. Therefore, ATPIF1 is a potential molecular target in the modulation of antitumor immunity of CD8+ T cells in cancer immunotherapy. Induction of ATPIF1 activity may promote CAR-T activity in cancer therapy.

Chromosome 1q21 aberration is one of the most common cytogenetic abnormalities in multiple myeloma, and is considered an important prognostic factor. The present study analyzed the clinical relevance and prognostic impact of 1q21 gain in 194 patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma treated with bortezomib-based regimens. 1q21 gain was detected in 45.9% (89/194) of patients, and those with 1q21 gain had a worse prognosis. Strikingly, our results showed that excluding the effects of other coinciding genetic anomalies, patients carrying at least four copies of 1q21 had worse survival outcome. Moreover, del(13q) strongly correlates with 1q21 gain, and the coexistence of del(13q) and 1q21 gain plays an important role in reducing PFS and OS times. Therefore, 1q21 gain should be considered a high-risk feature in multiple myeloma patients treated with a bortezomib-based regimen.

IF1 (ATPIF1) is a nuclear DNA-encoded mitochondrial protein whose activity is inhibition of the F1Fo-ATP synthase to control ATP production. IF1 activity remains unknown in the regulation of GLP-1 activity. In this study, IF1 was examined in the diet-induced obese mice using the gene knockout (If1-KO) mice. The mice gained more body weight on a high fat diet without a change in food intake. Insulin tolerance was impaired, but the oral glucose tolerance was improved through an increase in GLP-1 secretion. The KO mice exhibited an improved intestine structure, mitochondrial superstructure, enhanced mitophagy, reduced apoptosis and decreased adenine nucleotide translocase 2 (ANT2) protein in the intestinal epithelial cells together with preserved gut microbiota. The data suggest that GLP-1 secretion was enhanced in the obese If1-KO mice to preserve glucose tolerance through a signaling pathway of ANT2/mitochondria/L-cells/GLP-1/insulin. IF1 is a potential mitochondrial target for induction of GLP-1 secretion in L-cells.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is among the most prevalent primary liver diseases worldwide and can develop into various conditions, ranging from simple steatosis, through non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), to fibrosis, and eventually cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Nevertheless, there is no effective treatment for NAFLD due to the complicated etiology. Recently, activation of the NLPR3 inflammasome has been demonstrated to be a contributing factor in the development of NAFLD, particularly as a modulator of progression from initial hepatic steatosis to NASH. NLRP3 inflammasome, as a caspase-1 activation platform, is critical for processing key pro-inflammatory cytokines and pyroptosis. Various stimuli involved in NAFLD can activate the NLRP3 inflammasome, depending on the diverse cellular stresses that they cause. NLRP3 inflammasome-related inhibitors and agents for NAFLD treatment have been tested and demonstrated positive effects in experimental models. Meanwhile, some drugs have been applied in clinical studies, supporting this therapeutic approach. In this review, we discuss the activation, biological functions, and treatment targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome in the context of NAFLD progression. Specifically, we focus on the different types of therapeutic agents that can inhibit the NLRP3 inflammasome and summarize their pharmacological effectiveness for NAFLD treatment.

BackgroundMultiple myeloma (MM) is a highly heterogeneous disease with enormously variable outcomes. It remains to be a major challenge to conduct a more precise estimation of the survival of MM patients. The existing stratifications attached less importance to the prognostic significance of comorbidities. In the present study, we aimed to develop and validate a novel and simple prognostic stratification integrating tumor burden and comorbidities measured by HCT-CI.MethodWe retrospectively enrolled 385 consecutive newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) patients in Xijing Hospital from January 2013 to December 2020. The cohort between January 2016 and December 2020 was selected as development cohort (N = 233), and the cohort between January 2013 and December 2015 was determined as validation cohort (N = 152). By using LASSO analysis and univariate and multivariable Cox regression analyses, we developed the MM-BHAP model in the way of nomogram composed of β2-MG, HCT-CI, ALB, and PBPC. We internally and externally validated the MM-BHAP model and compared it with ISS stage and R-ISS stage.ResultsThe MM-BHAP model was superior to the ISS stage and partially better than the R-ISS stage according to time-dependent AUC, time-dependent C-index, DCA, IDI, and continuous NRI analyses. In predicting OS, only the MM-BHAP stratification clearly divided patients into three groups while both the ISS stage and R-ISS stage had poor classifications in patients with stage I and stage II. Moreover, the MM-BHAP stratification and the R-ISS stage performed well in predicting PFS, but not for the ISS stage. Besides, the MM-BHAP model was also applied to the patients with age ≤65 or age >65 and with or without HRCA and could enhance R-ISS or ISS classifications.ConclusionsOur study offered a novel simple MM-BHAP stratification containing tumor burden and comorbidities to predict outcomes in the real-world unselected NDMM population.

Global climate change and overgrazing have led to the degradation of natural grasslands and seriously threaten the diversity of grassland plant species, as plant species richness is very sensitive to natural grassland degradation. Therefore, we conducted a sheep grazing experiment in Zinniquan pasture on the northern slope of Xinjiang Tianshan Mountains to test the effects of grazing on plant species diversity in natural grasslands through the spatial and temporal characteristics of the foraging behavior of grazing sheep and the plant species composition on the grazing trajectories. Data on sheep grazing tracks were collected based on GPS, vegetation composition around the tracks was investigated and seeds were collected from sheep manure to determine germination rates by simulating rumen fistula uptake tests in sheep. We found that sheep grazing can bring seeds from agricultural fields to grow on natural grasslands, causing changes in plant species diversity and community structure. The results of this study provide new insights into natural grassland species restoration and offer a range of new strategies that can be applied to the management of natural grassland plant ecological restoration.

INTRDUCTION: l'hypertension artérielle est un problème majeur de santé publique en Afrique subsaharienne par sa fréquence élevée et le risque cardiovasculaire qu'elle entraine. L'objectif de cette étude était d'évaluer la prévalence des facteurs de risques cliniques et biologiques de l'hypertension artérielle à Bamako (Mali). METHODES: il s'agit d'une étude cas-témoin, stratifiée en fonction du sexe, portant sur 72 participants dont 36 hypertendus et 36 contrôles. Vingt-deux paramètres biochimiques plasmatiques ont été mesurés et analysés par des tests univariés et multivariés. RESULTATS: une hyperhomocystéinémie a été retrouvée chez 55,6% des femmes (p = 0,03) et 100% des hommes (p = 0,007) hypertendus. Le N-terminal pro b-type natriuretic peptide (NT-Pro-BNP) était également augmenté chez 16,7% des femmes (VIP 1 dans le modèle multi-varié) et des hommes hypertendus (p = 0,00006). Un bon modèle multivarié prédictif (OPLS-DA) a uniquement été obtenu chez les femmes hypertendues, avec un Q2cum = 0,73, attestant ainsi d'un important dimorphisme sexuel associé à l'hypertension artérielle. Ce modèle impliquait huit paramètres dont la concentration plasmatique était modifiée (homocystéine, NT-Pro-BNP, potassium, urée, glycémie, sodium, chlore et protéines totales). CONCLUSION: nous avons noté une association significative entre l'hyperhomocystéinémie et l'hypertension artérielle. Par conséquent, le dosage de l'homocystéine associé à une bonne prise en charge diminuerait le risque cardiovasculaire tout en améliorant la qualité de vie des patients hypertendus.

26. A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of the Neural Correlates of Direct vs. Generative Retrieval of Episodic Autobiographical Memory.

- Abstract
There is a widespread view that episodic autobiographical memories (EAMs) can be retrieved "directly" or "generatively." However, the neural mechanisms underlying these retrieval modes have been overlooked in the literature, likely due to the difficulty of operationalizing the two notions. Here, we propose to operationalize direct vs. generative retrieval based on memory cue specificity, in terms of EAMs elicited by specific/personalized vs. generic memory cues, respectively. After completing a literature search in four databases (PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science) in 2023, we performed a multilevel kernel density analysis (MKDA) to directly compare activations from 32 neuroimaging studies investigating these two EAM retrieval modalities with the above memory cue distinction. Both direct and generative retrieval showed common activations of the left hippocampus, bilateral angular gyrus, and posterior cingulate cortex. The direct vs. generative comparison revealed the activation of a brain circuit comprising the anterior and posterior cortical midline, the left angular gyrus, and the right cerebellum. Previous literature suggests that these regions play a role in self-referential processes, indicating that direct access to EAMs may be supported by the recruitment of self-related neural resources that facilitate the retrieval of personal memories. Conversely, generative vs. direct MKDA revealed the activation of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. As this region has been previously associated with schematic memory, its involvement may emphasize the "constructive" nature of generative EAM retrieval. - Abstract
Background: Trachomatous trichiasis (TT) is a painful, potentially blinding eye condition that can be managed through epilation or surgery. Women are affected by TT approximately twice as often as men and are believed to face gendered barriers to receiving surgical care to prevent vision loss., Methods: We used data from 817 cross-sectional surveys conducted during 2015-2019 in 20 African countries to estimate the prevalence difference (PD) between female and male eyes for four outcomes potentially indicating gender-related differences in TT management: (1) received surgery and developed postoperative TT (PTT), (2) never offered surgery, (3) offered surgery but declined it, and (4) offered epilation but never offered surgery., Results: The prevalence was modestly elevated among female eyes compared with male eyes for having PTT (PD:1.8 [95% confidence limits (CL): 0.6, 3.0]) and having declined surgery for the eye (PD: 6.2 [95% CL: 1.8, 10.7]). The proportion offered epilation was similar by gender (PD:0.5 [95% CL: -0.4, 1.3]), while never having been offered surgery was somewhat more prevalent among male eyes (PD: -2.1 [95% CL: -3.5, -0.7])., Conclusions: Our results suggest potential gender differences in TT management. Purpose: Population-based prevalence surveys are essential for decision-making on interventions to achieve trachoma elimination as a public health problem. This paper outlines the methodologies of Tropical Data, which supports work to undertake those surveys., Methods: Tropical Data is a consortium of partners that supports health ministries worldwide to conduct globally standardised prevalence surveys that conform to World Health Organization recommendations. Founding principles are health ministry ownership, partnership and collaboration, and quality assurance and quality control at every step of the survey process. Support covers survey planning, survey design, training, electronic data collection and fieldwork, and data management, analysis and dissemination. Methods are adapted to meet local context and needs. Customisations, operational research and integration of other diseases into routine trachoma surveys have also been supported., Results: Between 29
th February 2016 and 24th April 2023, 3373 trachoma surveys across 50 countries have been supported, resulting in 10,818,502 people being examined for trachoma., Conclusion: This health ministry-led, standardised approach, with support from the start to the end of the survey process, has helped all trachoma elimination stakeholders to know where interventions are needed, where interventions can be stopped, and when elimination as a public health problem has been achieved. Flexibility to meet specific country contexts, adaptation to changes in global guidance and adjustments in response to user feedback have facilitated innovation in evidence-based methodologies, and supported health ministries to strive for global disease control targets.- Published

Background: Global elimination of trachoma as a public health problem was targeted for 2020. We reviewed progress towards the elimination of active trachoma by country and geographical group., Methods: In this retrospective analysis of national survey and implementation data, all countries ever known to be endemic for trachoma that had either implemented at least one trachoma impact survey shown in the publicly available Trachoma Atlas, or are in Africa were invited to participate in this study. Scale-up was described according to the number of known endemic implementation units and mass drug administration implementation over time. The prevalence of active trachoma-follicular among children aged 1-9 years (TF
1-9 ) from baseline, impact, and surveillance surveys was categorised and used to show programme progress towards reaching the elimination threshold (TF1-9 <5%) using dot maps, spaghetti plots, and boxplots., Findings: We included data until Nov 10, 2021, for 38 countries, representing 2097 ever-endemic implementation units. Of these, 1923 (91·7%) have had mass drug administration. Of 1731 implementation units with a trachoma impact survey, the prevalence of TF1-9 had reduced by at least 50% in 1465 (84·6%) implementation units and 1182 (56·4%) of 2097 ever-endemic implementation units had reached the elimination threshold. 2 years after reaching a TF1-9 prevalence below 5%, most implementation units sustained this target; however, 58 (56·3%) of 103 implementation units in Ethiopia showed recrudescence., Interpretation: Global elimination of trachoma as a public health problem by 2020 was not possible, but this finding masks the great progress achieved. Implementation units in high baseline categories and recrudescent TF1-9 might prolong the attainment of elimination of active trachoma. - Abstract
Background: Trichiasis is present when one or more eyelashes touches the eye. Uncorrected, it can cause blindness. Accurate estimates of numbers affected, and their geographical distribution, help guide resource allocation., Methods: We obtained district-level trichiasis prevalence estimates in adults for 44 endemic and previously-endemic countries. We used (1) the most recent data for a district, if more than one estimate was available; (2) age- and sex-standardized corrections of historic estimates, where raw data were available; (3) historic estimates adjusted using a mean adjustment factor for districts where raw data were unavailable; and (4) expert assessment of available data for districts for which no prevalence estimates were available., Findings: Internally age- and sex-standardized data represented 1,355 districts and contributed 662 thousand cases (95% confidence interval [CI] 324 thousand-1.1 million) to the global total. Age- and sex-standardized district-level prevalence estimates differed from raw estimates by a mean factor of 0.45 (range 0.03-2.28). Previously non- stratified estimates for 398 districts, adjusted by ×0.45, contributed a further 411 thousand cases (95% CI 283-557 thousand). Eight countries retained previous estimates, contributing 848 thousand cases (95% CI 225 thousand-1.7 million). New expert assessments in 14 countries contributed 862 thousand cases (95% CI 228 thousand-1.7 million). The global trichiasis burden in 2016 was 2.8 million cases (95% CI 1.1-5.2 million)., Interpretation: The 2016 estimate is lower than previous estimates, probably due to more and better data; scale-up of trichiasis management services; and reductions in incidence due to lower active trachoma prevalence., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Objective: To investigate the characteristics of ophthalmic symptoms of patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and to provide reference for early diagnosis and treatment of HIV., Methods: The clinical data of 278 patients with HIV, including ophthalmic symptoms and general condition collected from September 2002 to July 2004, were analyzed retrospectively. These patients were from the Central African Republic., Results: Among the 278 patients with HIV, 102 had pathologic changes in the eyes and were accompanied with chronic dissipative symptoms and decreased CD4 cell counts. The pathogen of 278 patients with HIV at the initial reception were airway infection (n = 87, 31.3%), digestive tract infection (n = 65, 23.4%), skin symptoms (n = 55, 19.8%), multiple organ failure (n = 51, 18.4%) and ophthalmic symptoms (n = 20, 7.2%). Ophthalmic symptoms manifested as opportunistic infection and sarcoma formation, such as HIV retinopathy, chronic uveitis, external ophthalmoplegia, ocular herpes, and Kaposi's sarcoma in the eyelid. HIV-related retinopathy was not specific, which manifested as retinal hemorrhage, cotton wool spots, vascular occlusion, retinal necrosis, retinal detachment and ocular nerve atrophy., Conclusions: Many kinds of ophthalmic symptoms might appear in patients with HIV. Severe retinopathy and uveitis are the main causes of ablepsia. Because of neglecting the ophthalmic symptoms in the early stage, many HIV patients suffer from decreased visual acuity, which may severely affect the quality of their lives. Consequently, ophthalmologists should pay more attention to patients in the early stage of HIV.

- Abstract
This survey concerns 16 patients admitted to Bangui teaching national hospital center, coming from Ngakobo health center 450 km from the South East of Bangui, between September 2001 and May 2002. All of them have undergone a basic ophthalmological examination 16 patients have been hospitalised in the service of ophthalmology among them, 11 didn't go to the consultation. All the 16 patients were males, 18 to 46 years old. Five of them had bilateral corneal lesions and eleven patients presented unilateral lesions. Two patients had a corneal perforation at admission. The initial visual acuity of the concerned eye was estimated between LP(-) and 3/10th. The visual acuity valued after exit was LP(-) to 6/10. Four patients out of sixteen (two eyes with bilateral lesions and two with unilateral lesion) (six eyes) received as initial treatment, water rinse on the spot of the accident, then a local treatment by antibiotics administrated in the dispensary of the Ngakobo Province. Eight patients (two bilateral and six unilateral lesions) received a traditional treatment while five of them received it before their transfer to Bangui and 3 patients just before their arrival in Bangui. Four patients (five eyes) had no treatment at all. The nature of this traditional treatment, often of mineral and vegetal origin has not been specified. The main after-effects are corneal opacities, varying according to size, localization and gravity. At the beginning, 9 cases out 16 are generally diffused and superficial keratitis. After some days of treatment, 8 cases developed into corneal opacity freeing thus the visual axis. 3 cases of keratitis developed into a purulent melting then to a corneal perforation. Elapidae's spits on the eye are frequent in sugar cane cultivation areas. They can provoke some severe erosive corneal lesions, in absence of adequate and early management. The administration of traditional treatment most often complicates the clinical issue. Nursing staff, medical personnel and family should pay attention to the ocular toxicity of these septic matters and to the first cares provided to the patient before his early transfer to hospital.
