Background: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the performance of classical machine learning models (CMLs) and large language models (LLMs) in predicting mortality associated with COVID-19 by utilizing a high-dimensional tabular dataset. Materials and Methods: We analyzed data from 9,134 COVID-19 patients collected across four hospitals. Seven CML models, including XGBoost and random forest (RF), were trained and evaluated. The structured data was converted into text for zero-shot classification by eight LLMs, including GPT-4 and Mistral-7b. Additionally, Mistral-7b was fine-tuned using the QLoRA approach to enhance its predictive capabilities. Results: Among the CML models, XGBoost and RF achieved the highest accuracy, with F1 scores of 0.87 for internal validation and 0.83 for external validation. In the LLM category, GPT-4 was the top performer with an F1 score of 0.43. Fine-tuning Mistral-7b significantly improved its recall from 1% to 79%, resulting in an F1 score of 0.74, which was stable during external validation. Conclusion: While LLMs show moderate performance in zero-shot classification, fine-tuning can significantly enhance their effectiveness, potentially aligning them closer to CML models. Coreference resolution, critical for identifying textual entities referencing the same entity, faces challenges in pronoun resolution, particularly identifying pronoun antecedents. Existing methods often treat pronoun resolution as a separate task from mention detection, potentially missing valuable information. This study proposes the first end-to-end neural network system for Persian pronoun resolution, leveraging pre-trained Transformer models like ParsBERT. Our system jointly optimizes both mention detection and antecedent linking, achieving a 3.37 F1 score improvement over the previous state-of-the-art system (which relied on rule-based and statistical methods) on the Mehr corpus. This significant improvement demonstrates the effectiveness of combining neural networks with linguistic models, potentially marking a significant advancement in Persian pronoun resolution and paving the way for further research in this under-explored area.

The on-time graduation rate among universities in Puerto Rico is significantly lower than in the mainland United States. This problem is noteworthy because it leads to substantial negative consequences for the student, both socially and economically, the educational institution and the local economy. This project aims to develop a predictive model that accurately detects students early in their academic pursuit at risk of not graduating on time. Various predictive models are developed to do this, and the best model, the one with the highest performance, is selected. Using a dataset containing information from 24432 undergraduate students at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, the predictive performance of the models is evaluated in two scenarios: Group I includes both the first year of college and pre-college factors, and Group II only considers pre-college factors. Overall, for both scenarios, the boosting model, trained on the oversampled dataset, is the most successful at predicting who will not graduate on time.

Magnetic adatoms on superconductors give rise to Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states that hold considerable interest for the design of topological superconductivity. Here, we show that YSR states are also an ideal platform to engineer structures with intricate wave-function symmetries. We assemble structures of iron atoms on the quasi-two-dimensional superconductor $2H$-NbSe$_2$. The Yu-Shiba-Rusinov wave functions of individual atoms extend over several nanometers enabling hybridization even at large adatom spacing. We show that the substrate can be exploited to deliberately break symmetries of the adatom structure in ways unachievable in the gas phase. We highlight this potential by designing chiral wave functions of triangular adatom structures confined within a plane. Our results significantly expand the range of interesting quantum states that can be engineered using arrays of magnetic adatoms on superconductors.

In lead halide perovskites (APbX3), the effect of the A-site cation on optical and electronic properties has initially been thought to be marginal. Yet, evidence of beneficial effects on solar cell performance and light emission is accumulating. Here, we report that the A-cation in soft APbBr3 colloidal quantum dots (QDs) controls the phonon-induced localization of the exciton wavefunction. Insights from ab initio molecular dynamics and single-particle fluorescence spectroscopy demonstrate that anharmonic lattice vibrations and the resulting polymorphism act as an additional confinement potential. Avoiding the trade-off between single-photon purity and optical stability faced by downsizing conventional QDs into the strong confinement regime, dynamical phonon-induced confinement in large organic-inorganic perovskite QDs enables bright (10^6 photons/s), stable (> 1h), and pure (> 95%) single-photon emission in a widely tuneable spectral range (495-745 nm). Strong electron-phonon interaction in soft perovskite QDs provides an unconventional route toward the development of scalable room-temperature quantum light sources.

Each decision-making tool should be tested and validated in real case studies to be practical and fit to global problems. The application of multi-criteria decision-making methods (MCDM) is currently a trend to rank alternatives. In the literature, there are several multi-criteria decision-making methods according to their classification. During our experimentation on the Combined Compromise Solution (CoCoSo) method, we encountered its limits for real cases. The authors examined the applicability of the CoCoFISo method (improved version of combined compromise solution), by a real case study in a university campus and compared the obtained results to other MCDMs such as Preference Ranking Organisation Method for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE), Weighted Sum Method (WSM) and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). Our research finding indicates that CoCoSo is an applied method that has been developed to solve complex multi variable assessment problems, while CoCoFISo can improve the shortages observed in CoCoSo and deliver stable outcomes compared to other developed tools. The findings imply that application of CoCoFISo is suggested to decision makers, experts and researchers while they are facing practical challenges and sensitive questions regarding the utilization of a reliable decision-making method. Adverse drug events (ADEs) significantly impact clinical research, causing many clinical trial failures. ADE prediction is key for developing safer medications and enhancing patient outcomes. To support this effort, we introduce CT-ADE, a dataset for multilabel predictive modeling of ADEs in monopharmacy treatments. CT-ADE integrates data from 2,497 unique drugs, encompassing 168,984 drug-ADE pairs extracted from clinical trials, annotated with patient and contextual information, and comprehensive ADE concepts standardized across multiple levels of the MedDRA ontology. Preliminary analyses with large language models (LLMs) achieved F1-scores up to 55.90%. Models using patient and contextual information showed F1-score improvements of 21%-38% over models using only chemical structure data. Our results highlight the importance of target population and treatment regimens in the predictive modeling of ADEs, offering greater performance gains than LLM domain specialization and scaling. CT-ADE provides an essential tool for researchers aiming to leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance patient safety and minimize the impact of ADEs on pharmaceutical research and development. Contemporary quantum materials research is guided by themes of topology and of electronic correlations. A confluence of these two themes is engineered in "moir\'e materials", an emerging class of highly tunable, strongly correlated two-dimensional (2D) materials designed by the rotational or lattice misalignment of atomically thin crystals. In moir\'e materials, dominant Coulomb interactions among electrons give rise to collective electronic phases, often with robust topological properties. Identifying the mechanisms responsible for these exotic phases is fundamental to our understanding of strongly interacting quantum systems, and to our ability to engineer new material properties for potential future technological applications. In this Review, we highlight the contributions of local spectroscopic, thermodynamic, and electromagnetic probes to the budding field of moir\'e materials research. These techniques have not only identified many of the underlying mechanisms of the correlated insulators, generalized Wigner crystals, unconventional superconductors, moir\'e ferroelectrics, and topological orbital ferromagnets found in moir\'e materials, but they have also uncovered fragile quantum phases that have evaded spatially averaged global probes. High-quality, large-scale data is essential for robust deep learning models in medical applications, particularly ultrasound image analysis. Diffusion models facilitate high-fidelity medical image generation, reducing the costs associated with acquiring and annotating new images. This paper utilizes recent vision-language models to produce diverse and realistic synthetic echocardiography image data, preserving key features of the original images guided by textual and semantic label maps. Specifically, we investigate three potential avenues: unconditional generation, generation guided by text, and a hybrid approach incorporating both textual and semantic supervision. We show that the rich contextual information present in the synthesized data potentially enhances the accuracy and interpretability of downstream tasks, such as echocardiography segmentation and classification with improved metrics and faster convergence. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition with a wide range of behavioral and cognitive impairments. While genetic and environmental factors are known to contribute to its etiology, the underlying metabolic perturbations associated with ASD which can potentially connect genetic and environmental factors, remain poorly understood. Therefore, we conducted a metabolomic case-control study and performed a comprehensive analysis to identify significant alterations in metabolite profiles between children with ASD and typically developing (TD) controls. The objective of this study is to elucidate potential metabolomic signatures associated with ASD in children and identify specific metabolites that may serve as biomarkers for the disorder. We conducted metabolomic profiling on plasma samples from participants in the second phase of Epidemiological Research on Autism in Jamaica, a cohort of 200 children with ASD and 200 TD controls (2-8 years old). Using high-throughput liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques, we performed a targeted metabolite analysis, encompassing amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates, and other key metabolic compounds. After quality control and imputation of missing values, we performed univariable and multivariable analysis using normalized metabolites while adjusting for covariates, age, sex, socioeconomic status, and child's parish of birth. Our findings revealed unique metabolic patterns in children with ASD for four metabolites compared to TD controls. Notably, three of these metabolites were fatty acids, including myristoleic acid, eicosatetraenoic acid, and octadecenoic acid. Additionally, the amino acid sarcosine exhibited a significant association with ASD. These findings highlight the role of metabolites in the etiology of ASD and suggest opportunities for the development of targeted interventions.

Clustering in dynamic environments is of increasing importance, with broad applications ranging from real-time data analysis and online unsupervised learning to dynamic facility location problems. While meta-heuristics have shown promising effectiveness in static clustering tasks, their application for tracking optimal clustering solutions or robust clustering over time in dynamic environments remains largely underexplored. This is partly due to a lack of dynamic datasets with diverse, controllable, and realistic dynamic characteristics, hindering systematic performance evaluations of clustering algorithms in various dynamic scenarios. This deficiency leads to a gap in our understanding and capability to effectively design algorithms for clustering in dynamic environments. To bridge this gap, this paper introduces the Dynamic Dataset Generator (DDG). DDG features multiple dynamic Gaussian components integrated with a range of heterogeneous, local, and global changes. These changes vary in spatial and temporal severity, patterns, and domain of influence, providing a comprehensive tool for simulating a wide range of dynamic scenarios.

For decades, de Casteljau's algorithm has been used as a fundamental building block in curve and surface design and has found a wide range of applications in fields such as scientific computing, and discrete geometry to name but a few. With increasing interest in nonlinear data science, its constructive approach has been shown to provide a principled way to generalize parametric smooth curves to manifolds. These curves have found remarkable new applications in the analysis of parameter-dependent, geometric data. This article provides a survey of the recent theoretical developments in this exciting area as well as its applications in fields such as geometric morphometrics and longitudinal data analysis in medicine, archaeology, and meteorology.

The square root velocity transformation provides a convenient and numerically efficient approach to functional and shape data analysis of curves. We study fundamental geometric properties of curves under this transformation. Moreover, utilizing natural geometric constructions, we employ the approach for intrinsic comparison within several classes of surfaces and augmented curves, which arise in the real world applications such as tubes, ruled surfaces, spherical strips, protein molecules and hurricane tracks.

Developing foundational large language models (LLMs) is becoming increasingly costly and inefficient. Also, closed-source and larger open-source models generally offer better response quality but come with higher inference costs than smaller models. In this paper, we introduce Routoo, an architecture designed to optimize the selection of LLMs for specific prompts based on performance, cost, and efficiency. Routoo consists of two key components: a performance predictor and a cost-aware decoding. The performance predictor is a lightweight LLM that estimates the performance of various underlying LLMs without needing to execute and evaluate them. The cost-aware decoding then selects the most suitable model based on these predictions and other constraints like cost and latency. We evaluated Routoo using the MMLU benchmark across 57 domains employing open-source models. Our results show that Routoo matches the performance of the Mixtral 8x7b model while reducing inference costs by one-third. Additionally, by allowing increased costs, Routoo surpasses Mixtral's accuracy by over 5% at equivalent costs, achieving an accuracy of 75.9%. When integrating GPT4 into our model pool, Routoo nearly matches GPT4's performance at half the cost and exceeds it with a 25% cost reduction. These outcomes highlight Routoo's potential to create new SOTA in a cost-effective manner by leveraging the collective knowledge of multiple LLMs.

Health issues and pandemics remain paramount concerns in the contemporary era. Clostridioides Difficile Infection (CDI) stands out as a critical healthcare-associated infection with global implications. Effectively understanding the mechanisms of infection dissemination within healthcare units and hospitals is imperative to implement targeted containment measures. In this study, we address the limitations of prior research by Sulyok et al., where they delineated two distinct categories of surfaces as high-touch and low-touch fomites, and subsequently evaluated the viral spread contribution of each surface utilizing mathematical modeling and Ordinary Differential Equations (ODE). Acknowledging the indispensable role of spatial features and heterogeneity in the modeling of hospital and healthcare settings, we employ agent-based modeling to capture new insights. By incorporating spatial considerations and heterogeneous patients, we explore the impact of high-touch and low-touch surfaces on contamination transmission between patients. Furthermore, the study encompasses a comprehensive assessment of various cleaning protocols, with differing intervals and detergent cleaning efficacies, in order to identify the most optimal cleaning strategy and the most important factor amidst the array of alternatives. The rapid and widespread dissemination of misinformation through social networks is a growing concern in today's digital age. This study focused on modeling fake news diffusion, discovering the spreading dynamics, and designing control strategies. A common approach for modeling the misinformation dynamics is SIR-based models. Our approach is an extension of a model called 'SBFC' which is a SIR-based model. This model has three states, Susceptible, Believer, and Fact-Checker. The dynamics and transition between states are based on neighbors' beliefs, hoax credibility, spreading rate, probability of verifying the news, and probability of forgetting the current state. Our contribution is to push this model to real social networks by considering different classes of agents with their characteristics. We proposed two main strategies for confronting misinformation diffusion. First, we can educate a minor class, like scholars or influencers, to improve their ability to verify the news or remember their state longer. The second strategy is adding fact-checker bots to the network to spread the facts and influence their neighbors' states. In machine learning, the exponential growth of data and the associated ``curse of dimensionality'' pose significant challenges, particularly with expansive yet sparse datasets. Addressing these challenges, multi-view ensemble learning (MEL) has emerged as a transformative approach, with feature partitioning (FP) playing a pivotal role in constructing artificial views for MEL. Our study introduces the Semantic-Preserving Feature Partitioning (SPFP) algorithm, a novel method grounded in information theory. The SPFP algorithm effectively partitions datasets into multiple semantically consistent views, enhancing the MEL process. Through extensive experiments on eight real-world datasets, ranging from high-dimensional with limited instances to low-dimensional with high instances, our method demonstrates notable efficacy. It maintains model accuracy while significantly improving uncertainty measures in scenarios where high generalization performance is achievable. Conversely, it retains uncertainty metrics while enhancing accuracy where high generalization accuracy is less attainable. An effect size analysis further reveals that the SPFP algorithm outperforms benchmark models by large effect size and reduces computational demands through effective dimensionality reduction. As optimization challenges continue to evolve, so too must our tools and understanding. To effectively assess, validate, and compare optimization algorithms, it is crucial to use a benchmark test suite that encompasses a diverse range of problem instances with various characteristics. Traditional benchmark suites often consist of numerous fixed test functions, making it challenging to align these with specific research objectives, such as the systematic evaluation of algorithms under controllable conditions. This paper introduces the Generalized Numerical Benchmark Generator (GNBG) for single-objective, box-constrained, continuous numerical optimization. Unlike existing approaches that rely on multiple baseline functions and transformations, GNBG utilizes a single, parametric, and configurable baseline function. This design allows for control over various problem characteristics. Researchers using GNBG can generate instances that cover a broad array of morphological features, from unimodal to highly multimodal functions, various local optima patterns, and symmetric to highly asymmetric structures. The generated problems can also vary in separability, variable interaction structures, dimensionality, conditioning, and basin shapes. These customizable features enable the systematic evaluation and comparison of optimization algorithms, allowing researchers to probe their strengths and weaknesses under diverse and controllable conditions.

Many real-world optimization problems possess dynamic characteristics. Evolutionary dynamic optimization algorithms (EDOAs) aim to tackle the challenges associated with dynamic optimization problems. Looking at the existing works, the results reported for a given EDOA can sometimes be considerably different. This issue occurs because the source codes of many EDOAs, which are usually very complex algorithms, have not been made publicly available. Indeed, the complexity of components and mechanisms used in many EDOAs makes their re-implementation error-prone. In this paper, to assist researchers in performing experiments and comparing their algorithms against several EDOAs, we develop an open-source MATLAB platform for EDOAs, called Evolutionary Dynamic Optimization LABoratory (EDOLAB). This platform also contains an education module that can be used for educational purposes. In the education module, the user can observe a) a 2-dimensional problem space and how its morphology changes after each environmental change, b) the behaviors of individuals over time, and c) how the EDOA reacts to environmental changes and tries to track the moving optimum. In addition to being useful for research and education purposes, EDOLAB can also be used by practitioners to solve their real-world problems. The current version of EDOLAB includes 25 EDOAs and three fully-parametric benchmark generators. Eugene Wigner predicted long ago that when the Coulomb interactions between electrons become much stronger than their kinetic energy, electrons crystallize into a closely packed lattice. A variety of two-dimensional systems have shown evidence for Wigner crystals; however, a spontaneously formed classical or quantum Wigner crystal (WC) has never been directly visualized. Neither the identification of the WC symmetry nor direct investigation of its melting has been accomplished. Here we use high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements to directly image a magnetic field-induced electron WC in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG), and examine its structural properties as a function of electron density, magnetic field, and temperature. At high fields and the lowest temperature, we observe a triangular lattice electron WC in the lowest Landau Level (LLL) of BLG. The WC possesses the expected lattice constant and is robust in a range of filling factors between $\nu\sim$ 0.13 and $\nu\sim$ 0.38 except near fillings where it competes with fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states. Increasing the density or temperature results in the melting of the WC into a liquid phase that is isotropic but has a modulated structure characterized by the WC's Bragg wavevector. At low magnetic fields, the WC unexpectedly transitions into an anisotropic stripe phase, which has been commonly anticipated to form in higher LLs. This study examines 4-bit quantization methods like GPTQ in large language models (LLMs), highlighting GPTQ's overfitting and limited enhancement in Zero-Shot tasks. While prior works merely focusing on zero-shot measurement, we extend task scope to more generative categories such as code generation and abstractive summarization, in which we found that INT4 quantization can significantly underperform. However, simply shifting to higher precision formats like FP6 has been particularly challenging, thus overlooked, due to poor performance caused by the lack of sophisticated integration and system acceleration strategies on current AI hardware. Our results show that FP6, even with a coarse-grain quantization scheme, performs robustly across various algorithms and tasks, demonstrating its superiority in accuracy and versatility. Notably, with the FP6 quantization, \codestar-15B model performs comparably to its FP16 counterpart in code generation, and for smaller models like the 406M it closely matches their baselines in summarization. Neither can be achieved by INT4. To better accommodate various AI hardware and achieve the best system performance, we propose a novel 4+2 design for FP6 to achieve similar latency to the state-of-the-art INT4 fine-grain quantization. With our design, FP6 can become a promising solution to the current 4-bit quantization methods used in LLMs.

This document introduces a set of 24 box-constrained numerical global optimization problem instances, systematically constructed using the Generalized Numerical Benchmark Generator (GNBG). These instances cover a broad spectrum of problem features, including varying degrees of modality, ruggedness, symmetry, conditioning, variable interaction structures, basin linearity, and deceptiveness. Purposefully designed, this test suite offers varying difficulty levels and problem characteristics, facilitating rigorous evaluation and comparative analysis of optimization algorithms. By presenting these problems, we aim to provide researchers with a structured platform to assess the strengths and weaknesses of their algorithms against challenges with known, controlled characteristics. For reproducibility, the MATLAB source code for this test suite is publicly available.

Composite fermion (CF) is a topological quasiparticle that emerges from a non-perturbative attachment of vortices to electrons in strongly correlated two-dimensional materials. Similar to non-interacting fermions that form Landau levels in a magnetic field, CFs can fill analogous ``Lambda'' levels, giving rise to the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect of electrons. Here, we show that Lambda levels can be directly visualized through the characteristic peak structure in the signal obtained via spectroscopy with the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) on a FQH state. Complementary to transport, which probes low-energy properties of CFs, we show that \emph{high-energy} features in STM spectra can be interpreted in terms of Lambda levels. We numerically demonstrate that STM spectra can be accurately modeled using Jain's CF theory. Drug-Target Interaction (DTI) prediction is vital for drug discovery, yet challenges persist in achieving model interpretability and optimizing performance. We propose a novel transformer-based model, FragXsiteDTI, that aims to address these challenges in DTI prediction. Notably, FragXsiteDTI is the first DTI model to simultaneously leverage drug molecule fragments and protein pockets. Our information-rich representations for both proteins and drugs offer a detailed perspective on their interaction. Inspired by the Perceiver IO framework, our model features a learnable latent array, initially interacting with protein binding site embeddings using cross-attention and later refined through self-attention and used as a query to the drug fragments in the drug's cross-attention transformer block. This learnable query array serves as a mediator and enables seamless information translation, preserving critical nuances in drug-protein interactions. Our computational results on three benchmarking datasets demonstrate the superior predictive power of our model over several state-of-the-art models. Quantization techniques are pivotal in reducing the memory and computational demands of deep neural network inference. Existing solutions, such as ZeroQuant, offer dynamic quantization for models like BERT and GPT but overlook crucial memory-bounded operators and the complexities of per-token quantization. Addressing these gaps, we present a novel, fully hardware-enhanced robust optimized post-training W8A8 quantization framework, ZeroQuant-HERO. This framework uniquely integrates both memory bandwidth and compute-intensive operators, aiming for optimal hardware performance. We undertake a theoretical analysis to probe the Kerr spectrum within the superconducting phase of strontium ruthenate, where the Kerr rotation experiments demonstrate the existence of a superconducting state with broken time reversal symmetry. We find that spin-orbit coupling changes the hybridization along the Fermi surface's diagonal zone mainly affects Hall transport. We show that the dominant Hall response arises mainly from the quasi-1D orbitals $d_{yz}$ and $d_{xz}$, linked to their hybridization, while other contributions are negligible. This establishes that, the breaking of time reversal symmetry of quasi-1D orbitals can account for the existence of the Kerr angle, irrespective of the order symmetry specific to the $d_{xy}$ orbital.
