Lake eutrophication often causes declines and even losses of submerged macrophytes through the shading effects of increased periphyton and phytoplankton. The Chinese swamp shrimp Neocaridina denticulata sinensis Kemp (Decapoda, Atyidae) is a common omnivore in Chinese lakes, where its presence may impact both periphyton and phytoplankton, with previously unstudied consequences for submerged macrophytes. Here, using a mesocosm experiment, we studied the effect of N. d. sinensis on periphyton, phytoplankton and the submerged macrophyte Vallisneria denseserrulata. Results showed that in the presence of N. d. sinensis, the biomass of periphyton on the leaves of V. denseserrulata was significantly reduced, and that growth rate of V. denseserrulata increased. The presence of N. d. sinensis also significantly increased the total phosphorus concentrations in the water column and phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll-a). The enhanced growth of V. denseserrulata is likely to be linked to improved light harvesting due to the reduced periphyton attached to their leaf surface. The results suggest that stocking with Chinese swamp shrimps may enhance the development of macrophytes in eutrophic shallow lakes.

Carrier relaxation dynamics of InSe flakes is investigated by using time-resolved pump-probe reflectivity measurement. The photocarriers associated with the Pxy orbital band-edge transition at 2.40 eV, which is coupled to the in-plane polarized light, is observed to possess a lifetime of ∼19 ps at room temperature and ∼99 ps at 10 K. The temperature and power dependent carrier lifetime suggests that Shockley–Read–Hall process is the dominant nonradiative recombination mechanism responsible for the carrier relaxation. In addition, the electron scattering with a 14.5 meV optical phonon plays an active role in the carrier relaxation with increasing temperatures. A broad absorption around 1.65–1.90 eV is observed. The photocarriers associated with this broad transition show a long lifetime of ∼200 ps that is nearly independent of temperature and photon energy. This is indicative of bound carriers by defects. Our experimental results provide essential information for the characteristics of carrier dynamics and defects in InSe flakes. The newly developed two-dimensional layered materials provide a perfect platform for valley-spintronics exploration. To determine the prospect of utilizing the valley degree of freedom, it is of great importance to directly detect and understand the valley dynamics in these materials. Here, the exciton valley dynamics in monolayer WSe2 is investigated by the two-color pump–probe magneto-optical Kerr technique. By tuning the probe photon energy in resonance with the free excitons and trions, the valley relaxation time of different excitonic states in monolayer WSe2 is determined. Valley relaxation time of the free exciton in monolayer WSe2 is confirmed to be several picoseconds. A slow valley polarization relaxation process is observed to be associated with the trions, showing that the valley lifetime for trions is one order of magnitude longer than that of free excitons.
