Bentonite has been studied extensively because of its strong sorption and complexation ability. In this work, the sorption of Se(IV) on purified GMZ bentonite was investigated under ambient temperature as functions of contact time, pH, Se(IV) concentration and co-existing ion Eu(III) using batch techniques. Sorption kinetics of Se(IV) was successfully described by the pseudo-second-order rate equation. The sorption amount of Se(IV) was strongly dependent on the solution pH, and a positive effect was observed on Se(IV) and Eu(III) co-sorption when these two elements existed in the same system under high surface coverage of sorbent. Double layer model was set up and used to quantitatively interpret the sorption experimental data collected in binary and ternary sorption systems. From the experimental results, one can conclude that GMZ bentonite may have good potentialities for immobilizing selenium in nuclear wastes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Novel magnetic organo-bentonite-Fe3O4 poly(sodium acrylate) (OB-Fe3O4 PSA) superabsorbent nanocomposites were synthesized in aqueous solution through the copolymerization of partially neutralized acrylic acid (SA) on OB-Fe3O4 nanoparticle by using N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide as crosslinker and ammonium persulfate as initiator. This new superabsorbent was characterized by FTIR, TGA, FE-SEM and XRD. Its iron content and magnetic properties were studied by using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), respectively. The water retention test of OB-Fe3O4 PSA was also performed. The introduced OB-Fe3O4 could form a loose and coarse surface and improve the water absorbency of OB-Fe3O4 PSA superabsorbent. The effects of pH, ionic strength, and humic substances (HS) on the adsorption of Th(IV) were investigated in detail through batch experiments. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax ) of Th(IV) on OB-Fe3O4 PSA 3.6 superabsorbent at pH 3.0±0.05 and T=298K was about 6.55mmol/g, higher than any value previously reported. The thermodynamic parameters calculated from temperature-dependent adsorption isotherms suggested that Th(IV) adsorption on OB-Fe3O4 PSA superabsorbent was an endothermic and spontaneous process. Furthermore, OB-Fe3O4 PSA superabsorbent could be regenerated through the desorption of Th(IV) using 0.1mol/L HCl solution and the adsorption capacity was still higher than 3.6mmol/g after five consecutive adsorption–desorption processes. Metal ions sorption can be significantly affected by the presence of other sorbates, especially of complexing ligands. In this study, the effect of Se(IV) on Eu(III) sorption onto TiO at different pH and Eu(III) concentration was investigated. Se(IV) was found to enhance Eu(III) sorption as a function of Se(IV) concentration. Constant capacitance model was successfully used to interpret the sorption experimental data. The solubility product of Eu(SeO) at ambient temperature was investigated to highlight the sorption mechanism of ternary sorption system. The p K value of Eu(SeO) was found to be 31.51 ± 0.95. Se(IV) sorption on purified Na-kaolinite was investigated under ambient temperature as functions of contact time, pH, ionic strength and Se(IV) concentration using batch techniques. The rate of sorption is relatively rapid and sorption kinetics of Se(IV) can be successfully described by the pseudo-second-order model. The amount of Se(IV) sorbed was moderately dependent on the solution pH but insensitive to ionic strengths. The sorption/desorption isotherms of Se(IV) show that the sorption process is reversible. A double layer model was set up and used to quantitatively interpret the experimental data. Three surface complexes (≡Al)SeO, ≡ AlSeO and ≡AlOHSeO were proposed which satisfactorily fit our data. The adsorption of Cu(II) on oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (oMWCNTs) as a function of contact time, pH, ionic strength, temperature, and hydroxylated fullerene (C60(OH)n) and carboxylated fullerene (C60(C(COOH)2)n) were studied under ambient conditions using batch techniques. The results showed that the adsorption of Cu(II) had rapidly reached equilibrium and the kinetic process was well described by a pseudo-second-order rate model. Cu(II) adsorption on oMWCNTs was dependent on pH but independent of ionic strength. Compared with the Freundlich model, the Langmuir model was more suitable for analyzing the adsorption isotherms. The thermodynamic parameters calculated from temperature-dependent adsorption isotherms suggested that Cu(II) adsorption on oMWCNTs was spontaneous and endothermic. The effect of C60(OH)n on Cu(II) adsorption of oMWCNTs was not significant at low C60(OH)n concentration, whereas a negative effect was observed at higher concentration. The adsorption of Cu(II) on oMWCNTs was enhanced with increasing pH values at pH < 5, but decreased at pH ≥ 5. The presence of C60(C(COOH)2)n inhibited the adsorption of Cu(II) onto oMWCNTs at pH 4–6. The double sorption site model was applied to simulate the adsorption isotherms of Cu(II) in the presence of C60(OH)n and fitted the experimental data well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
