A methodology to use laser printing, a form of electrophotography, to print metal chalcogenide complexes on paper, is described. After fusing the toner to paper, a heating step is used to cause the printed metal xanthate complexes to thermolyze within the toner and form three target metal chalcogenides: CuS, SnS, and ZnS. To achieve this, we synthesize a poly(styrene- co - n -butyl acrylate) thermopolymer that emulates the thermal properties of a commercial toner and is also solution processable with the metal xanthate complexes used: [Zn(S 2 COEt) 2 ], [Cu(S 2 COEt)·(PPh 3 ) 2 ], and [Sn(S 2 COEt) 2 ]. We demonstrate through energy dispersive X-ray mapping that the toner is deposited following printing and that thermolysis of the metal xanthate complexes occurs in the fused toner, demonstrating the first example of laser printing of inorganic complexes and, in turn, semiconductors., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2024 The Authors. In this study we demonstrate simple guidelines to generate a diverse range of fluorescent materials in both liquid and solid state by focusing on the most popular C-dots precursors, i.e. the binary systems of citric acid and urea. The pyrolytic treatment of those precursors combined with standard size separation techniques (dialysis and filtration), leads to four distinct families of photoluminescent materials in which the emissive signal predominantly arises from C-dots with embedded fluorophores, cyanuric acid-rich C-dots, a blend of molecular fluorophores and a mixture of C-dots with unbound molecular fluorophores, respectively. Within each one of those families the chemical composition and the optical properties of their members can be fine-tuned by adjusting the molar ratio of the reactants. Apart from generating a variety of aqueous dispersions, our approach leads to highly fluorescent powders derived from precursors comprising excessive amounts of urea that is consumed for the build-up of the carbogenic cores, the molecular fluorophores and the solid diluent matrix that suppresses self-quenching effects.

The concept of mimicking structural colour in nature as an alternative to traditional textile coloration techniques would reduce dependency on dyes, pigments and vast quantities of water in the textile supply chain. Structural colours originate from the physical interaction of light with nanoscale structures. This is exhibited in the bodies and wings of certain species of butterfly, beetles and plants. The angular optical effects of the Chrysina gloriosa beetle result from the periodicity due to the cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) structure adopted by the cells in their exoskeleton. The optical properties of CLCs makes promising applications for optical sensors and anti-counterfeit materials. Application using inkjet printing technology enables designs to be tuned to meet product requirements, and with a hydrophobic treatment challenges associated with a rough surface such as textiles are overcome. Here we report inkjet printing CLC solutions onto hydrophobic pre-treated textiles. The study focuses on the development of a new family of layer-by-layer coatings comprising Nafion, lysozyme and chitosan to address challenges related to microbial contamination. Circular dichroism was employed to gain insights on the interactions of the building blocks at the molecular level. Quartz crystal microbalance tests were used to monitor in real time the build-up of multilayer coatings, while atomic force microscopy, contact angle and surface zeta potential measurements were performed to assess the surface characteristics of the multilayer assemblies. Remarkably, the nanocoated surfaces show almost 100% reduction in the population of both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . The study suggests that Nafion based synergistic platforms can offer an effective line of defence against bacteria, facilitating antimicrobial mechanisms that go beyond the concept of exclusion zone.

The development of graphene-polymer nanocomposite materials has been hindered by issues such as poor colloidal stability of graphene in liquid media, weak interactions between graphene and the host polymers as well as the lack of scalable and economical graphene synthesis routes. Chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) can spontaneously disperse graphene without the need for mechanical agitation, chemical functionalisation or surfactant stabilisation,1 however is incompatible with most polymers and organic materials. Here, we demonstrate how poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) - the polymer which constitutes Kevlar - can be co-processed with graphene in CSA and wet-spun into nanocomposite fibres with minimal aggregation of graphene.

Field-emission devices are promising candidates to replace silicon fin field-effect transistors as next-generation nanoelectronic components. For these devices to be adopted, nanoscale field emitters with nanoscale gaps between them need to be fabricated, requiring the transfer of, for example, sub-10 nm patterns with a sub-20 nm pitch to substrates like silicon and tungsten. New resist materials must therefore be developed that exhibit the properties of sub-10 nm resolution and high dry etch resistance. A negative tone, metal-organic resist is presented here. It can be patterned to produce sub-10 nm features when exposed to helium ion beam lithography at line doses on the order of tens of picocoulombs per centimeter. The resist was used to create 5 nm wide, continuous, discrete lines spaced on a 16 nm pitch in silicon and 6 nm wide lines on an 18 nm pitch in tungsten, with line edge roughness of 3 nm. After the lithographic exposure, the resist demonstrates high resistance to silicon and tungsten dry etch conditions (SF 6 and C 4 F 8 plasma), allowing the pattern to be transferred to the underlying substrates. The resist's etch selectivity for silicon and tungsten was measured to be 6.2:1 and 5.6:1, respectively; this allowed 3 to 4 nm thick resist films to yield structures that were 21 and 19 nm tall, respectively, while both maintained a sub-10 nm width on a sub-20 nm pitch.

The synthesis of ( E )-phenylazo-3- N -(4-hydroxyphenyl)maleimide ( 1 ) using a procedure previously reported in Molecules is deemed to be erroneous. A detailed re-investigation of the earlier work suggests that the spectral data for key intermediates and the final product, ( 1 ), was mis-assigned. We conclude that compound ( 1 ) was not synthesized, but rather an unusual ring opening reaction of the maleimide unit of the starting material, N -(4-hydroxyphenyl)maleimide ( 2 ) leading to the generation of ( Z )-4-((4-hydroxyphenyl)amino)-4-oxobut-2-enoic acid, ( 3 ) was observed instead. Examination of the original experimental data reveals systematic errors in the reporting of all of the combustion microanalytical data. Overall, the present investigation suggests that errors in the interpretation of spectral data, falsification of analytical data and selective editing of experimental results raise questions over the veracity of the work presented in the original paper.

Inkjet-printed wearable electronic textiles (e-textiles) are considered to be very promising due to excellent processing and environmental benefits offered by digital fabrication technique. Inkjet-printing of conductive metallic inks such as silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) are well-established and that of graphene-based inks is of great interest due to multi-functional properties of graphene. However, poor ink stability at higher graphene concentration and the cost associated with the higher Ag loading in metal inks have limited their wider use. Moreover, graphene-based e-textiles reported so far are mainly based on graphene derivatives such as graphene oxide (GO) or reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which suffers from poor electrical conductivity. Here we report inkjet printing of highly conductive and cost-effective graphene-Ag composite ink for wearable e-textiles applications. The composite inks were formulated, characterised and inkjet-printed onto PEL paper first and then sintered at 150 °C for 1 hr. The sheet resistance of the printed patterns is found to be in the range of ~0.08-4.74 Ω/sq depending on the number of print layers and the graphene-Ag ratio in the formulation. The optimised composite ink was then successfully printed onto surface pre-treated (by inkjet printing) cotton fabrics in order to produce all-inkjet-printed highly conductive and cost-effective electronic textiles.

This study presents preliminary experimental data suggesting that sodium 4-(pyrene-1-yl)butane-1-sulfonate (PBSA), 5 , an analogue of sodium pyrene-1-sulfonate (PSA), 1 , enhances the stability of aqueous reduced graphene oxide (RGO) graphene dispersions. We find that RGO and exfoliated graphene dispersions prepared in the presence of 5 are approximately double the concentration of those made with commercially available PSA, 1 . Quantum mechanical and molecular dynamics simulations provide key insights into the behavior of these molecules on the graphene surface. The seemingly obvious introduction of a polar sulfonate head group linked via an appropriate alkyl spacer to the aromatic core results in both more efficient binding of 5 to the graphene surface and more efficient solvation of the polar head group by bulk solvent (water). Overall, this improves the stabilization of the graphene flakes by disfavoring dissociation of the stabilizer from the graphene surface and inhibiting reaggregation by electrostatic and steric repulsion. Wearable sensors placed behind-the-ear are emerging as being very promising for unobtrusive long term monitoring. Factors such as gait, electroencephalography (EEG), and ballistocardiography (BCG) can all be measured from behind-the-ear in a socially acceptable hearing aid based form factor. Previous works have investigated the recording of electrocardiography (ECG) from the ear, but generally with one electrode placed some distance away from the ear itself. This paper uses recently introduced tattoo electrodes to investigate whether ECG components can indeed be measured from behind a single ear. Compared to a reference photophelsmography (PPG) device we show that the fundamental heart beat frequency is present in behind-the-ear ECG only in half of the cases considered. In contrast the second harmonic is present in all records and could allow the extraction of heart rate to within a few beats-per-minute accuracy. Further signal processing work is required to allow the automated extraction of this, particularly when working with short time windows of data, but our results characterize the signal and demonstrate the principle of behind-the-ear ECG collected from a single ear.

A new resist material for electron beam lithography has been created that is based on a supramolecular assembly. Wearable electronics are revolutionizing personalized and preventative healthcare by allowing the easy, unobtrusive, and long term monitoring of a range of body parameters. Conformal electronics which attach directly to the skin in a very robust and long term manner are envisioned as the next generation of highly portable miniaturized computing devices, beyond wearables. In this paper we overview the state-of-the-art in conformal electronics created using silver nanoparticle inkjet printed techniques for home assistive and rehabilitative devices. The barriers to wider adaption, particularly the challenges of high performance antenna design when placed close to the body, are discussed in detail.

Using an electrostatic-based super inkjet printer we report the high-resolution deposition of polyelectrolyte macroinitiators and subsequent polymer brush growth using SI-ARGET-ATRP. We go on to demonstrate for the first time a submicron patterning phenomenon through the addition of either a like charged polyelectrolyte homopolymer or through careful control of ionic strength. As a result patterning of polymer brushes down to ca. 300 nm is reported. We present a possible mechanistic model and consider how this may be applied to other polyelectrolyte-based systems as a general method for submicron patterning.

Thermal vibrations and the dynamic disorder they create can detrimentally affect the transport properties of van der Waals bonded molecular semiconductors. The low-energy nature of these vibrations makes it difficult to access them experimentally, which is why we still lack clear molecular design rules to control and reduce dynamic disorder. In this study we discuss the promising organic semiconductors rubrene, 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothio-phene and 2,9-di-decyl-dinaphtho-[2,3-b:20,30-f]-thieno-[3,2-b]-thiophene in terms of an exceptionally low degree of dynamic disorder. In particular, we analyse diffuse scattering in transmission electron microscopy, to show that small molecules that have their side chains attached along the long axis of their conjugated core are better encapsulated in their crystal structure, which helps reduce large-amplitude thermal motions. Our work provides a general strategy for the design of new classes of very high mobility organic semiconductors with a low degree of dynamic disorder.

A generic approach to the regiospecific synthesis of halogenated polycyclic aromatics is made possible by the one- or two-directional benzannulation reactions of readily available (ortho-allylaryl)trichloroacetates (the "BHQ" reaction). Palladium-catalysed cross-coupling reactions of the so-formed haloaromatics enable the synthesis of functionalised polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with surgical precision. The regioselective, orthogonal functionalisation of 4,10-dichlorochrysene enables the synthesis of a variety of 2,8,4,10-"A2B2"-tetrasubstituted chrysenes. Such compounds exhibit broadened UV-vis absorption spectra, decreased band gap and higher HOMO levels compared to the parent chrysene.

We report a systemic study of the stability of organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) both in storage and under operation. Apart from a thin polystyrene buffer layer spin-coated onto the gate dielectric, the constituent parts of the OTFTs were all prepared by vacuum evaporation. The OTFTs are based on the semiconducting small molecule dinaphtho[2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DNTT) deposited onto the surface of a polystyrene-buffered in situ polymerized diacrylate gate insulator. Over a period of 9 months, no degradation of the hole mobility occurred in devices stored either in the dark in dry air or in uncontrolled air and normal laboratory fluorescent lighting conditions. In the latter case, rather than decreasing, the mobility actually increased almost 2-fold to 1.5 cm(2)/(V · s). The devices also showed good stability during repeat on/off cycles in the dark in dry air. Exposure to oxygen and light during the on/off cycles led to a positive shift of the transfer curves due to electron trapping when the DNTT was biased into depletion by the application of positive gate voltage. When operated in accumulation, negative gate voltage under the same conditions, the transfer curves were stable. When voltage cycling in moist air in the dark, the transfer curves shifted to negative voltages, thought to be due to the generation of hole traps either in the semiconductor or its interface with the dielectric layer. When subjected to gate bias stress in dry air in the dark for at least 144 h, the device characteristics remained stable.

The new paradigm of heterostructures based on two-dimensional (2D) atomic crystals has already led to the observation of exciting physical phenomena and creation of novel devices. The possibility of combining layers of different 2D materials in one stack allows unprecedented control over the electronic and optical properties of the resulting material. Still, the current method of mechanical transfer of individual 2D crystals, though allowing exceptional control over the quality of such structures and interfaces, is not scalable. Here we show that such heterostructures can be assembled from chemically exfoliated 2D crystals, allowing for low-cost and scalable methods to be used in device fabrication.

The application of a new benzannulation reaction for the regiocontrolled synthesis of functionalized chrysenes is reported. The initial benzannulation and the subsequent halogen displacement reactions are both highly regiospecific, which thereby enables the regiocontrolled synthesis of a variety of 4,10-disubstituted chrysenes from commercially available 1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene.

Two poly(styrene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PSO-PEO) triblock copolymers with different chain lengths were analyzed as potential chemotherapeutic nanocarriers, and their ability to inhibit the P-glycoprotein (P-gp) efflux pump in a multidrug resistant (MDR) cell line were measured in order to establish possible cell-responses induced by the presence of the copolymer molecules. Thus, EO33SO14EO33 and EO38SO10EO38 polymeric micelles were tested regarding doxorubicin (DOXO) entrapment efficiency (solubilization test), physical stability (DLS), cytocompatibility (fibroblasts), release profiles at various pHs (in vitro tests), as well as P-gp inhibition and evasion and cytotoxicity of the DOXO-loaded micelles in an ovarian MDR NCI-ADR/RES cell line and in DOXO-sensitive MCF-7 cells. EO33SO14EO33 and EO38SO10EO38 formed spherical micelles (~13nm) at lower concentration than other copolymers under clinical evaluation (e.g. Pluronic®), exhibited 0.2% to 1.8% loading capacity, enhancing more than 60 times drug apparent solubility, and retained the cargo for long time. The copolymer unimers inhibited P-gp ATPase activity in a similar way as Pluronic P85, favoring DOXO accumulation in the resistant cell line, but not in the sensitive cell line. DOXO loaded in the micelles accumulated more slowly inside the cells, but caused greater cytotoxicity than free drug solutions in the NCI-ADR-RES cell line, which overexpressed P-gp. Hence, PSO-PEO block copolymers offer interesting features as new biological response modifiers to be used in the design of efficient nanocarriers for cancer chemotherapy., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. In this study, we consider segregative phase separation in aqueous mixtures of quaternary ammonium surfactants didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDQ) and alkyl (C12, 70%; C14 30%) dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (BAC) upon the addition of poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride (pDADMAC) as a function of both concentration and molecular weight. The nature of the surfactant type is dominant in determining the concentration at which separation into an upper essentially surfactant-rich phase and lower polyelectrolyte-rich phase is observed. However, for high-molecular-weight pDADMAC there is a clear indication of an additional depletion flocculation effect. When the BAC/DDQ ratio is tuned, the segregative phase separation point can be precisely controlled. We propose a phase separation mechanism for like-charged quaternary ammonium polyelectrolyte/surfactant/water mixtures induced by a reduction in the ionic atmosphere around the surfactant headgroup and possible ion pair formation. An additional polyelectrolyte-induced depletion flocculation effect was also observed.

Two new poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(styrene oxide) triblock copolymers (PEO-PSO-PEO) with optimized block lengths selected on the basis of previous studies were synthesized with the aim of achieving a maximal solubilization ability and a suitable sustained release, while keeping very low material expense and excellent aqueous copolymer solubility. The self-assembling and gelling properties of these copolymers were characterized by means of light scattering, fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and rheometry. Both copolymers formed spherical micelles (12-14 nm) at very low concentrations. At larger concentration (>25 wt%), copolymer solutions showed a rich phase behavior, with the appearance of two types of rheologically active (more viscous) fluids and of physical gels depending on solution temperature and concentration. The copolymer behaved notably different despite their relatively similar block lengths. The ability of the polymeric micellar solutions to solubilize the antifungal drug griseofulvin was evaluated and compared to that reported for other structurally-related block copolymers. Drug solubilization values up to 55 mg g(-1) were achieved, which are greater than those obtained by previously analyzed poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(styrene oxide), poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(butylene oxide), and poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide) block copolymers. The results indicate that the selected SO/EO ratio and copolymer block lengths were optimal for simultaneously achieving low critical micelle concentrations (cmc) values and large drug encapsulation ability. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of selected Brij non-ionic surfactants for enhancing the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs. Griseofulvin was selected as a model drug candidate enabling comparisons to be made with the solubilisation capacities of other poly(ethylene oxide)-based copolymers. UV/Vis and (1)H NMR spectroscopies were used to quantify the enhancement of solubility of griseofulvin in 1 wt% aqueous micellar solutions of Brij 78 (C(18)H(37)E(20)), Brij 98 (C(18)H(35)E(20)) and Brij 700 (C(18)H(37)E(100)) (where E represents the OCH(2)CH(2) unit of the poly(ethylene oxide) chain) at 25, 37 and 40 °C. Solubilisation capacities (S(cp) expressed as mg griseofulvin per g Brij) were similar for Brij 78 and 98 (range 6-11 mg g(-1)) but lower for Brij 700 (3-4 mg g(-1)) as would be expected for the surfactant with the higher ethylene oxide content. The micellization of F127 (E(98)P(67)E(98)) in dilute aqueous solutions of polyethylene glycol (PEG6000 and PEG35000) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP K30 and PVP K90) is studied. The average hydrodynamic radius (r(h,app)) obtained from the dynamic light scattering technique increased with increase in PEG concentration but decreased on addition of PVP, results which are consistent with interaction of the micelles with PEG and the formation of micelles clusters, but no such interaction occurs with PVP. Tube inversion was used to determine the onset of gelation. The critical concentration of F127 for gelation increased on addition of PEG and of PVP K30 but decreased on addition of PVP K90. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to show that the 30 wt% F127 gel structure (fcc) was independent of polymer type and concentration, as was the d-spacing and so the micelle hard-sphere radius. The maximum elastic modulus (G(max)(')) of 30 wt% F127 decreased from its value for water alone as PEG was added, but was little changed by adding PVP. These results are consistent with the packed-micelles in the 30 wt% F127 gel being effectively isolated from the polymer solution on the microscale while, especially for the PEG, being mixed on the macroscale., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of enhancing the solubilisation capacity of micellar solutions of Pluronic F127 for the poorly water-soluble drug griseofulvin by co-formulating with a water-soluble polymer. The effect of the addition of the polyethylene glycols PEG6000 and 35000, and the poly(vinylpyrrolidone)s PVP K30 and K90, on the solubilisation capacity of 1wt% solutions of Pluronic F127 was related to the effect of these additives on particle size as determined by dynamic light scattering measurements. The addition of PEG35000 to 1wt% F127 solutions significantly increased the solubility capacity expressed in terms of unit weight of F127; PVP K90 had a smaller effect but no enhancement was noted following the addition of PEG6000 or PVP K30. Solubilisation enhancement was thought to be a consequence of the association of the polymers with the E-blocks of the micelle corona so providing an expanded region of reduced polarity for drug solubilisation., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Intramolecular structure and intermolecular packing in crystalline molecular semiconductors should have profound effects on the charge-carrier wave function, but simple drift mobility measurements are not very sensitive to this. Here we show that differences in the Hall resistance of two soluble pentacene derivatives can be explained with different degrees of carrier delocalization being limited by thermal lattice fluctuations. A combination of Hall measurements, optical spectroscopy, and theoretical simulations provides a powerful probe of structure-property relationships at a molecular level.

The solubilisation of griseofulvin in 1wt% aqueous micellar solutions of Pluronic F127 at 37°C has been modified by adding polyethylene glycol PEG 35000 or poly(vinylpyrrolidone) PVP K30. The solubilisation capacity expressed in terms of unit weight of F127 is increased by the addition of 0.5wt% PEG 35000 to a value approaching double that of a 2.5wt% solution of F127 alone, but there is no advantage in adding 0.5wt% PVP K30., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. We report for the first time evidence of flow-induced polymer degradation during inkjet printing for both poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) in good solvent. This has significance for the deposition of functional and biological materials. Polymers having Mw either less than 100 kDa or greater than approximately 1,000 kDa show no evidence of molecular weight degradation. The lower boundary condition is a consequence of low Deborah Number De imposed by the printhead geometry and the upper boundary condition due to visco-elastic damping. For intermediate molecular weights the effect is greatest at high elongational strain rate and low solution concentration with higher polydispersity polymers being most sensitive to molecular weight degradation. For low polydispersity samples, PDi ≤ 1.3, chain breakage is essentially centro-symmetric induced either by turbulance or overstretching when the strain rate increases well beyond a critical value, that is the stretching rate is high enough to exceed the rate of relaxation. For higher polydispersity samples chain breakage is consistent with almost random scission along the chain, inferring that the forces required to break the chain are additionally transmitted either by valence bonds, i.e. network chains and junctions or discrete entanglements rather than solely by hydrodynamic interaction., (Copyright © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In dilute aqueous solution unimers of copolymer P123 (E(21)P(67)E(21)) associate to form micelles, and in more concentrated solution micelles pack to form high-modulus gels. We are interested in the use of the system as a templating agent in the synthesis of mesoporous materials, and the possibility of determining gel structure, hence mesoporosity, by use of n-, s- or t-butanol. Dynamic light scattering from clear dilute solutions has been used to confirm micellization, visual observation of mobility (tube inversion) to detect gel formation in concentrated solutions, oscillatory rheometry to confirm gel formation and provide values of elastic moduli over a wide temperature range, and small-angle X-ray scattering to determine gel structure. As expected, clear cubic gels (fcc) formed at moderate concentrations and temperatures, e.g. 30 wt.% P123, 20°C, and clear hexagonal gels at higher concentrations and temperatures. The transition on heating from cubic to hexagonal gel involved an intermediate turbid phase in which cubic and hex structures coexisted. Considering cubic gels of 35 wt.% P123 in 5 wt.% butanol/water, those in n-butanol/water had the lowest critical temperatures for gel formation and the highest maximum values for the dynamic elastic modulus (G') of the gels, a result consistent with n-butanol/water being the poorest solvent for P123., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Inc. In dilute aqueous solution unimers of copolymer F127 (E(98)P(67)E(98)) associate to form micelles, and in more concentrated solution micelles pack to form high-modulus gels. Cosolvents are known to affect these processes, and ethanol/water mixtures have been of particular interest. Dynamic light scattering from dilute solutions was used to confirm micellization, but major attention was directed towards the gels. Visual observation of mobility (tube inversion) was used to detect gel formation, oscillatory rheometry to confirm gel formation and provide values of the elastic moduli over a wide temperature range, and small-angle X-ray scattering to determine gel structure. The solvents were limited to 10, 20 and 30 wt.% ethanol/water. Critical concentrations for gel formation were similar for 10 and 20 wt.% ethanol/water but were significantly increased for 30 wt.% ethanol/water, e.g. at T=45 degrees C from c approximately 15 wt.% to c approximately 28 wt.%. The elastic moduli reached maximum values at T approximately 50 degrees C: e.g. G' approximately 25 kPa for 25 wt.% F127 in 10 and 20 wt.% ethanol/water and a similar value for 30 wt.% F127 in 30 wt.% ethanol/water. A new fabrication process for the patterning of organic semiconductors at the nanoscale has been developed using low temperature thermal nanoimprint lithography and the details of this process are discussed. Novel planar nanotransistors have been fabricated and characterized from poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and we demonstrate the feasibility of using such devices as highly sensitive chemical sensors.

Gel diagrams based on tube inversion and oscillatory rheometry are reported for Pluronic copolymers F127 (E(98)P(67)E(98)) and P123 (E(21)P(67)E(21)) in mixtures with anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Total concentrations (c, SDS+copolymer) were as high as 50 wt % with mole ratios SDS/copolymer (mr) in the ranges 1-5 (F127) and 1-7 (P123). Temperatures were as high as 90 degrees C. Determination of the temperature dependences of the dynamic moduli served to confirm the gel boundaries from tube inversion and to reveal the high elastic moduli of the gels, e.g., compared at comparable positions in the gel phase, a 50 wt % SDS/P123 with mr = 7 had G' three times that of a corresponding gel of P123 alone. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to show that the structures of all the SDS/F127 gels were bcc and that the structures of the SDS/P123 gels with mr = 1 were either fcc (c = 30 wt %) or hex (c = 40 wt %). Assignment of structures to SDS/P123 gels with values of mr in the range 3-7 was more difficult, as high-order scattering peaks could be very weak, and at the higher values of c and mr, the SAXS peaks included multiple reflections.

Protein aggregation has a multitude of consequences ranging from affecting protein expression to its implication in different diseases. Of recent interest is the specific form of aggregation leading to the formation of amyloid fibrils, structures associated with diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. These fibrils can further associate in other more complex structures such as fibrillar gels, plaques, or spherulitic structures. In the present work, we describe the physical and structural properties of additional supraself-assembled structures of human serum albumin under solution conditions in which amyloid-like fibrils are formed. We have detected the formation of ordered aggregates of amyloid fibrils, i.e., spherulites which possess a radial arrangement of the fibrils around a disorganized protein core and sizes of several micrometers by means of polarized optical microscopy, laser confocal microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. These spherulites are detected both in solution and embedded in an isotropic matrix of fibrillar gels. In this regard, we have also noted the formation of protein gels when the protein concentration and/or ionic strength exceds a threshold value (the gelation point) as observed by rheometry. Fibrillar gels are formed through intermolecular nonspecific association of amyloid fibrils at a pH far away from the isolectric point of the protein where protein molecules seem to display a "solid-like" behavior due to the existence of non-DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeck) intermolecular repulsive forces. As the solution ionic strength increases, a coarsening of this type of gel is observed by environmental scanning microscopy. In contrast, at pH close to the protein isoelectric point, particulate gels are formed due to a faster aggregation process, which does not allow substantial structural reorganization to enable the formation of ordered structures. This behavior also additionally corroborates that the existence of particulates might also be a generic property of all polypeptide chains as amyloid fibril formation under suitable conditions.

The solubilisation of two poorly soluble flavonoids, quercetin and rutin, in micellar solutions of mixtures of a block copolymer of ethylene oxide and styrene oxide (E(137)S(18)E(137)) with one of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide (E(62)P(39)E(62)) has been studied at 25 and 37 degrees C. Solubilisation capacities were higher than those for the model poorly water-soluble drug griseofulvin and comparable with published values for the solubilisation of rutin by beta-cyclodextrin.

1,4,8,11-Methyl-substituted 6,13-triethylsilylethynylpentacene shows extended pi-pi overlap when deposited from solution, yielding organic thin film transistors with high and reproducible hole mobility with negligible hysteresis.

The influence of hydrophobic-block length on solubilisation capacity was examined for micelles of E(m)B(n) copolymers (E=oxyethylene, B=oxybutylene, subscripts denote number-average block lengths in repeat units) with B-block lengths in the range of 30-76 and with E-blocks of sufficient length to ensure the formation of spherical micelles. Griseofulvin was used as a model poorly-water-soluble drug known to be almost exclusively solubilised in the micellar core. Combination of solubilisation data with those of a previous study has shown that the amount of drug solubilised per gram of hydrophobe is essentially independent of B-block length when this exceeds about 15 B units, suggesting that core size is not a major influence on solubilisation.

In certain applications copolymer P123 (E21P67E21) is dissolved in water-ethanol mixtures, initially to form micellar solutions and eventually to gel. For P123 in 10, 20, and 30 wt % aqueous ethanol we used dynamic light scattering from dilute solutions to confirm micellization, oscillatory rheometry, and visual observation of mobility (tube inversion) to determine gel formation in concentrated solutions and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to determine gel structure. Except for solutions in 30 wt % aqueous ethanol, a clear-turbid transition was encountered on heating dilute and concentrated micellar solutions alike, and as for solutions in water alone (Chaibundit et al. Langmuir 2007, 23, 9229) this could be ascribed to formation of wormlike micelles. Dense clouding, typical of phase separation, was observed at higher temperatures. Regions of isotropic and birefringent gel were defined for concentrated solutions and shown (by SAXS) to have cubic (fcc and hcp) and hexagonal structures, consistent with packed spherical and elongated micelles, respectively. The cubic gels (0, 10, and 20 wt % ethanol) were clear, while the hex gels were either turbid (0 and 10 wt % ethanol), turbid enclosing a clear region (20 wt % ethanol), or entirely clear (30 wt % ethanol). The SAXS profile was unchanged between turbid and clear regions of the 20 wt % ethanol gel. Temperature scans of dynamic moduli showed (as expected) a clear distinction between high-modulus cubic gels (G'max approximately 20-30 kPa) and lower modulus hex gels (G'max<10 kPa).

The dependence of log(cmc) on hydrophobic block length n was examined for E(m)B(n) copolymers (E=oxyethylene, B=oxybutylene, subscripts denote number-average block lengths in repeat units) with n in the range 30-76. Combination with published data for E(m)B(n) diblock copolymers with shorter E-blocks shows two changes of slope in the log(cmc)-n plot corresponding to the onset of unimolecular micelle formation at n approximately 12 and completion of this process at n approximately 30. The results are discussed with reference to published data for E(m)L(n) and E(m)CL(n) (L from d,L-lactide; CL from epsilon-caprolactone) copolymers, which show similar behaviour.

Published values of the critical micelle concentration are tabulated for diblock copolymers E(m)P(n), E(m)B(n), E(m)S(n), E(m)L(n), E(m)VL(n) and E(m)CL(n), where E denotes a chain unit derived from ethylene oxide, P from propylene oxide, B from 1,2-butylene oxide, S from styrene oxide, L from dl-lactide, VL from gamma-valerolactone and CL from epsilon-caprolactone, and the subscripts denote average chain lengths. Noting that log(cmc/moldm(-3) is proportional to the standard Gibbs energy of micellisation, the dependence of this quantity on hydrophobic block length (n) is explored for a given E-block length. Superposition of data allows ranking of the hydrophobicities of the chain units. The ratios relative to the least hydrophobic unit are: P : L : B : VL : S : CL = 1 : 4 : 6 : 10 : 12 : 12 Transitions in the slope of log(cmc) versus n are assigned to changes in the unimer-micelle equilibrium and related to the formation of unimolecular micelles and, at high values of n, to the completion of that process. The formation transition is seen in the plots for all the copolymers except the least hydrophobic, E(m)P(n). The completion transition is seen in the plots for E(m)CL(n) and E(m)L(n) copolymers, as these alone include results for copolymers with very lengthy hydrophobic blocks.

The micellization in dilute aqueous solution of Pluronic copolymers P123 (E21P67E21) and F127 (E98P67E98) and mixtures of the two was investigated using static and dynamic light scattering. Gelation of concentrated solutions of the two copolymers and their mixtures was studied using tube inversion and oscillatory rheometry. The two copolymers comicellized to give micelles with narrow size distributions. Clouding temperatures and critical micelle temperatures decreased as the proportion of P123 in the mixture was increased. Micelle association numbers of the mixed micelles lay between the values found for micelles of P123 and F127 alone, whereas micelle radii passed through maximum values in the range 0-50 wt % P123. As judged by the ratio of the thermodynamic to the hydrodynamic radius, the micelle interaction potential changes gradually from soft to hard as the proportion of P123 in the mixture is increased. Regions of cubic and hexagonal (birefringent) gel were defined for concentrated solutions. The high-temperature boundary of the 30 wt % cubic gel decreased monotonically from 90 to 43 degrees C as the proportion of P123 in the mixture was increased from 0 to 100 wt %, whereas the low-temperature boundary was essentially constant at 15 +/- 3 degrees C. Increasing the proportion of P123 in the mixture at 25 degrees C increased the concentration at which the cubic gel was first formed and decreased the concentration at which the hexagonal gel was first formed.

The development of a germanium-based linker system for the solid phase synthesis (SPS) of 3-(n-hexyl)thiophene oligomers and the first SPS of triarylamine oligomers via iterative chain extension is described. The efficiency of the key steps in the oligomer syntheses and their compatibility with the germanium linker are demonstrated by the SPS of bi-[3-(n-hexyl)thiophene] 19 and ter-(triarylamine) 50. The use of a germanium-based linker in combination with appropriately selected silicon-based blocking/protecting groups allows double coupling to drive the key cross coupling steps to completion hence minimising deletion sequences and also allows for traceless and potentially functionalisative cleavage from the resin. The latter feature has yet to be fully explored but towards this end the first ipso-borodegermylation reaction of a 2-germyl-3-(n-hexyl)thiophene is presented.

The gelation behaviour of concentrated micellar solutions of mixtures of a block copolymer of ethylene oxide and styrene oxide (E(137)S(18)E(137)) with one of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide (E(62)P(39)E(62)) has been investigated. Over a wide range of compositions, up to 90 wt.% E(137)S(18)E(137) in the mixture, gelation resembled that of solutions of E(62)P(39)E(62) alone, i.e. they gelled on heating from ambient to body temperature. In related experiments, using the aromatic drug griseofulvin as a comparative standard, it was demonstrated that solubilisation efficiency of dilute micellar solutions of the mixtures with 80 wt.% or more E(137)S(18)E(137) approached that of solutions of E(137)S(18)E(137) alone. Thus it was shown that the mixed system could have both the satisfactory solubilisation capacity of micellar solutions of E(137)S(18)E(137) and the desirable gelation characteristics of E(62)P(39)E(62), and so have potential for use in drug release applications involving in situ gelation.

The new fully planar cyclopentadithiophene, 4-n-dodecylidene-4H-cyclopenta(2,1-b;3,4-b')dithiophene, shows extensive pi-stacking in the solid state with short intermolecular distances (ca. 3.5 A) between adjacent molecules. Polymerisation of this monomer by two different protocols gave solution processable alkenyl-bridged cyclopentadithiophene polymers with extended pi-conjugation in the main chain.
