Abstract Autonomous trucks have the potential to enhance both safety and convenience in intelligent transportation. However, their maximum speed and ability to navigate a variety of driving conditions, particularly uneven roads, are limited by a high center of gravity, which increases the risk of rollover. Road bulges, sinkholes, and unexpected debris all present additional challenges for autonomous trucks' operational design, which current perception and decision-making algorithms often overlook. To mitigate rollover risks and improve adaptability to damaged roads, this paper presents a novel Road Obstacle-Involved Trajectory Planner (ROITP). The planner categorizes road obstacles using a learning-based algorithm. A discrete optimization algorithm selects a multi-objective optimal trajectory while taking into account constraints and objective functions derived from truck dynamics. Validation across various scenarios on a hardware-in-loop platform demonstrates that the proposed planner is effective and feasible for real-time implementation.

Abstract The new energy vehicle plays a crucial role in green transportation, and the energy management strategy of hybrid power systems is essential for ensuring energy-efficient driving. This paper presents a state-of-the-art survey and review of reinforcement learning-based energy management strategies for hybrid power systems. Additionally, it envisions the outlook for autonomous intelligent hybrid electric vehicles, with reinforcement learning as the foundational technology. First of all, to provide a macro view of historical development, the brief history of deep learning, reinforcement learning, and deep reinforcement learning is presented in the form of a timeline. Then, the comprehensive survey and review are conducted by collecting papers from mainstream academic databases. Enumerating most of the contributions based on three main directions—algorithm innovation, powertrain innovation, and environment innovation—provides an objective review of the research status. Finally, to advance the application of reinforcement learning in autonomous intelligent hybrid electric vehicles, future research plans positioned as “Alpha HEV” are envisioned, integrating Autopilot and energy-saving control.

Abstract A comparative study of model predictive control (MPC) schemes and robust $$H_{\infty }$$ H ∞ state feedback control (RSC) method for trajectory tracking is proposed in this paper. The main objective of this paper is to compare MPC and RSC controllers’ performance in tracking predefined trajectory under different scenarios. MPC controller is designed based on the simple longitudinal-yaw-lateral motions of a single-track vehicle with a linear tire, which is an approximation of the more realistic model of a vehicle with double-track motion with a non-linear tire mode. RSC is designed on the basis of the same method as adopted for the MPC controller to achieve a fair comparison. Then, three test cases are built in CarSim-Simulink joint platform. Specifically, the verification test is used to test the tracking accuracy of MPC and RSC controller under well road conditions. Besides, the double lane change test with low road adhesion is designed to find the maximum velocity that both controllers can carry out while guaranteeing stability. Furthermore, an extreme curve test is built where the road adhesion changes suddenly, in order to test the performance of both controllers under extreme conditions. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of MPC and RSC under different scenarios are also discussed.

Drivers of commercial vehicles are invariably subject to chronic diseases such as back pain as a result of exposure to severe cabin excitations. In this paper, a six degrees of freedom (6-DOF) coupled human-body and seat suspension system is modeled in order to reduce the vibrations transmitted to the head, seat, and the relative seat and cabin floor displacement. The contributions of the present paper are: 1) two significant but inherently conflicting control objectives are employed, namely the seat acceleration and the relative displacement between seat and cabin floor to account for the effect of seat endstops, 2) A novel learning rate gradient descent based neural network approximator algorithm coupled to an adaptive indirect type-2 fuzzy neural network (T2FNN) controller to converge the controller to the ideal parameters of the uncertain model. 3) The controller model takes into account the seat suspension nonlinearities due to the nonlinear asymmetric piecewise damper and the cubic hardening of the suspension spring. The proposed controller employs the principle of type-2 fuzzy systems with interval membership function and unknown specifications. The effectiveness of the closed-loop system is validated regarding the uncertainties compared to observer-based sliding mode controller (SMC) and a high-fidelity virtual lab MSC.ADAMS-Simulink platform to validate the results in practical scenarios.

This paper presents a novel observer-based control strategy to improve the vehicle roll behavior performance through magneto-rheological (MR) dampers under steering wheel input and various road excitation conditions. Since the vehicle roll with sudden steering input is an essential part of driving safety and possesses inherent nonlinearities, the full-car nonlinear Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model is first established to describe the vehicle roll dynamics considering nonlinear coupling dynamics of tire lateral force and MR damper force under road excitation input. Furthermore, a T-S model-based fuzzy observer is adapted to estimate the vehicle roll angle and roll rate. The stability conditions for the used T-S observer are calculated using linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), and the proposed observer is induced by solving the proposed LMI. Based on the Lyapunov function, sliding mode theory and prescribed performance function, a novel state observer-based prescribed performance control strategy is developed to constrain the controlled vehicle roll angle and roll rate state within the prescribed performance boundaries. Finally, the proposed techniques are validated through the J-turn and Fishhook tests conducted via a high-fidelity CarSim software platform.

A single-time velocity estimator-based reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm, integrated with a chaotic metaheuristic optimization technique is proposed in this article for the optimal path-planning of the nonholonomic robots considering a moving/stationary obstacle avoidance strategy. The additional contribution of the present study is by employing the Terramechanics principles to incorporate the effects of wheel sinkage into the deformable terrain on the dynamics of the robot aiming to find the optimal compensating force/torque magnitude to sustain a robust and smooth motion. The designed systematic control-oriented system incorporates a cost function of weighted components associated with the target-tracking and the obstacle avoidance. The designed velocity estimator contributes to the finite-state Markov decision process (MDP) in order to train the transition probabilities of the problem objectives. Based on the obtained results, the optimal solution for the Q-learning in terms of the adjusting factor for the minimized tracking error and obstacle collision risk propagation profiles is found at 0.22. The results further confirm the promising capacity of the proposed optimization-based RL algorithm for the collision avoidance control of the nonholonomic robots on deformable terrains.

This paper presents novel algorithms for vibration control of the in-wheel motor (IWM) driven electric vehicles to improve its ride comfort and reduce IWM vibration. A quarter vehicle model is first developed based on a dynamic vibration absorbing structure (DVAS) driven by a switched reluctance motor (SRM). This model considers the coupled longitudinal-vertical dynamics and the unknown road profile as well as the unbalanced electromagnetic force induced by the SRM are treated as the excitation. The dynamics and boundary models of two commercially available semi-active dampers are then presented, which are used as the actuators of both the suspension and the DVAS structure. Based on the developed model, a hybrid controller with a hybrid acceleration driven damping algorithms is proposed to reduce the vibration of the sprung mass and the SRM. The controller parameters are subsequently determined by solving the multi-objective optimization problem with a multi-objective evolutionary optimization method. Numerical simulation results for random road and bumpy excitations are analyzed, and multi-body simulation is finally performed to validate the feasibility of the proposed controllers. Results indicate that the proposed hybrid controllers can effectively improve ride comfort and reduce the SRM vibration compared with the traditional suspension system with IWM.

This paper presents a new method to address issues associated with vehicle system state estimation using an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) with considering full-car system and nonlinear tire force under various international standards organization (ISO) road conditions. Due to the fact that practical road information is complex and noise covariance cannot be treated as a constant, the influence of varying vehicle system process noise variance and measurement noise covariance on the estimation accuracy of the UKF is first discussed. To precisely estimate road information, a novel road classification method using measured signals (vertical acceleration of sprung mass and unsprung mass) of vehicle system is proposed. According to road excitation levels, different road process variances are defined to tune the vehicle system's variance for application of UKF. Then, road classification and UKF are combined to form an adaptive UKF (AUKF) that takes into account the relationship of different road process noise variances and measurement noise covariances under varying road conditions. Simulation results reveal that the proposed AUKF algorithm has higher accuracy for state estimation of a vehicle system under various ISO road excitation condition.

The camera always suffers from image instability on the moving vehicle due to unintentional vibrations caused by road roughness. This article presents an adaptive neural network approach mixed with linear quadratic regulator control for a quarter-car active suspension system to stabilize the image captured area of the camera. An active suspension system provides extra force through the actuator which allows it to suppress vertical vibration of sprung mass. First, to deal with the road disturbance and the system uncertainties, radial basis function neural network is proposed to construct the map between the state error and the compensation component, which can correct the optimal state-feedback control law. The weights matrix of radial basis function neural network is adaptively tuned online. Then, the closed-loop stability and asymptotic convergence performance is guaranteed by Lyapunov analysis. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed controller effectively suppresses the vibration of the camera and enhances the stabilization of the entire camera, where different excitations are considered to validate the system performance.

The purpose is to suppress vertical displacement of sprung mass with the application of active suspension system. Since the active suspension system has nonlinear and time varying characteristics, adaptive neural network (ANN) is proposed to make the controller robustness against systematic uncertainties, which release the model-based requirement of the sliding model control, and the weighting matrix is adjusted online according to Lyapunov function. The control system consists of two loops. The outer loop is a position controller designed with sliding mode strategy, while the PID controller in the inner loop is to track the desired force. The closed loop stability and asymptotic convergence performance can be guaranteed on the basis of the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, the simulation results show that the employed controller effectively suppresses the vibration of the camera and enhances the stabilization of the entire camera, where different excitations are considered to validate the system performance.

A new road estimation based suspension hybrid control strategy is proposed. Its aim is to adaptively change control gains to improve both ride comfort and road handling with the constraint of rattle space. To achieve this, analytical expressions for ride comfort, road handling, and rattle space with respect to road input are derived based on the hybrid control, and the problem is transformed into a MOOP (Multiobjective Optimization Problem) and has been solved by NSGA-II (Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II). A new road estimation and classification method, which is based on ANFIS (Adaptive Neurofuzzy Inference System) and wavelet transforms, is then presented as a means of detecting the road profile level, and a Kalman filter is designed for observing unknown states. The results of simulations conducted with random road excitation show that the efficiency of the proposed control strategy compares favourably to that of a passive system.
