In this paper, we argue that Indigenous data sovereignty (IDS) is vital for addressing threats to ecosystems, as well as for Indigenous Peoples re-establishing and maintaining sovereignty over their territories. Indigenous knowledge-holders face pressure from non-Indigenous scientists to collaborate to address environmental problems, while the open data movement is pressuring them to make their data public. We examine the role of IDS in the context of cumulative effects and climate change that threaten salmon-bearing ecosystems in British Columbia, guided by content from an online workshop in June 2022 and attended exclusively by a Tier-1 audience (First Nations knowledge-holders and/or technical staff working for Nations). Attention to data is required for fruitful collaborations between Indigenous communities and non-Indigenous researchers to address the impacts of climate change and the cumulative effects affecting salmon-bearing watersheds in BC. In addition, we provide steps that Indigenous governments can take to assert sovereignty over data, recommendations that external researchers can use to ensure they respect IDS, and questions that external researchers and Indigenous partners can discuss to guide decision-making about data management. Finally, we reflect on what we learned during the process of co-creating materials.

In alpine ecosystems, elevation broadly functions as a steep thermal gradient, with plant communities exposed to regular fluctuations in hot and cold temperatures. These conditions lead to selective filtering, potentially contributing to species-level variation in thermal tolerance and population-level genetic divergence. Few studies have explored the breadth of alpine plant thermal tolerances across a thermal gradient or the underlying genetic variation thereof. We measured photosystem heat (Tcrit-hot) and cold (Tcrit-cold) thresholds of ten Australian alpine species across elevation gradients and characterised their neutral genetic variation. To reveal the biogeographical drivers of present-day genetic signatures, we also reconstructed temporal changes in habitat suitability across potential distributional ranges. We found intraspecific variation in thermal thresholds, but this was not associated with elevation, nor underpinned by genetic differentiation on a local scale. Instead, regional population differentiation and considerable homozygosity within populations may, in part, be driven by distributional contractions, long-term persistence, and migrations following habitat suitability. Our habitat suitability models suggest that cool-climate-distributed alpine plants may be threatened by a warming climate. Yet, the observed wide thermal tolerances did not reflect this vulnerability. Conservation efforts should seek to understand variations in species-level thermal tolerance across alpine microclimates.

The THz spectrum (0.1-10 THz) is a region between optics and electronics, and it is still not fully explored and is unlicensed. Recent studies show that it will bring a revolution in technology, especially in the field of communication. Future communication technologies such as 6G and Terabit DSL will utilize this THz band as it has the capability to support high data rates in Tbps. For designing an efficient system that propagates these THz waves with low loss, it is required to understand the propagation channel properly. THz channel modeling is at its infancy stage, and a detailed investigation of channel behavior is required to study the efficient propagation of THz waves. In this study, the methods applied to the modeling of the THz channel are discussed in detail. Although channel modeling is a broad topic here only the methods and techniques are discussed along with their advantages and limitations. In this paper, a comparison microwave method between Transmission and Reflection using a Coaxial Cable and complimentary double split ring resonator (CDSRR) for characterization of magneto-dielectric material is proposed. This method enables the determination of both relative permittivity and permeability of magneto-dielectric material. The CDSRR resonates at 3.46 GHz with a quality factor of 127 in unloaded condition. To determine the effects of permittivity and permeability on the shift of resonant frequency, the electric and magnetic fields are localized in two separate zones in the CDSRR sensor. Prediction formulas are proposed to extract the value of real permittivity and permeability from S21 parameter. For Transmission/Reflection Method, to extract the dielectric and magnetic properties, Nicolson-Ross-Weir (NRW) are used. The prototypes of proposed sensors are fabricated on a ROGERS 3003 and tested for validation of their functionality. A good agreement between the measured data using Transmission/Reflection Method and CDSRR sensor is observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A comparison between storm‐time TIMED/GUVI FUV spectra in thermospheric composition disturbed (O/N2 <∼140 km> depleted and NO <∼110 km> enhanced) and undisturbed regions reveals the following features: (1) A clear decrease in N2 LBHS (140–150 nm) band intensities compared to that between 150 and 160 nm; (2) A significant spectral decrease around O 164.1 nm; (3) Two enhanced peaks between 170 and 185 nm. The feature (2) is clearly due to atomic oxygen density decrease in the low thermosphere. The feature (3) is caused by storm‐time production and transport of nitric oxide. An AURIC simulation reproduced feature (1) confirming that storm‐time enhancement in O2 density (∼120–170 km) and the wavelength dependent O2 absorption cross section are the source of observed feature (1). On the other hand, the feature (1) was not observed in the regions without O/N2 depletion. This further supports that O2 density enhancement is responsible for feature (1). Plain Language Summary: Observations by a FUV spectrograph imager on NASA TIMED satellite revealed two interesting features in the storm‐time disturbed thermosphere: (1) a relative decrease in N2 LBH intensities at 140–150 nm versus 150–160 nm, (2) significant decrease in O 164.1 nm radiance and enhanced emission between 170 and 185 nm. The feature (2) is well known and due to O density depletion and production of nitric oxide. The feature is not well understood. A model simulation indicates the feature (1) is due to storm‐time O2 density increase and wavelength dependent O2 absorption cross section which peaked around 140 nm. This result indicates that FUV spectrograph imager is capable to detect storm‐time O2 density changes. The creek sandpaper fig of southeastern Australia, Ficus coronata Spin, is culturally significant to Australian traditional owners who made use of the leaves to smooth timber and ate the fruit. The species is thought to have a long history on the continent, with some suggesting a Gondwanan origin. However, distributional patterns and overall ecology suggest a recent expansion across suitable habitats. We used landscape genomic techniques and environmental niche modelling to reconstruct its history and explore whether the species underwent a recent and rapid expansion along the east coast of New South Wales. Genomic analysis of 178 specimens collected from 32 populations throughout the species’ New South Wales distribution revealed a lack of genetic diversity and population structure. Some populations at the species’ southern and western range limits displayed unexpected diversity, which appears to be the result of allele surfing. Field work and genetic evidence suggest a Holocene expansion which may have increased since European colonisation. We also present a novel method for detecting allele surfing—MAHF (minor allele at highest frequency).

Maximising genetic diversity in conservation efforts can help to increase the chances of survival of a species amidst the turbulence of the anthropogenic age. Here, we define the distribution and extent of genomic diversity across the range of the iconic but threatened Acacia purpureopetala, a beautiful sprawling shrub with mauve flowers, restricted to a few disjunct populations in far north Queensland, Australia. Seed production is poor and germination sporadic, but the species occurs in abundance at some field sites. While several thousands of SNP markers were recovered, comparable to other Acacia species, very low levels of heterozygosity and allelic variation suggested inbreeding. Limited dispersal most likely contributed towards the high levels of divergence amongst field sites and, using a generalised dissimilarity modelling framework amongst environmental, spatial and floristic data, spatial distance was found to be the strongest factor explaining the current distribution of genetic diversity. We illustrate how population genomic data can be utilised to design a collecting strategy for a germplasm conservation collection that optimises genetic diversity. For this species, inclusion of all field sites will capture maximum genetic diversity for both in situ and ex situ conservation. Assisted cross pollination, within and between field sites and genetically structured groups, is recommended to enhance heterozygosity particularly at the most disjunct sites and further fragmentation should be discouraged to avoid loss of genetic connectivity.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease and one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in the human population. The disease also results in a major socio-economic burden. The rapid spread of malaria epidemics in developing countries is exacerbated by the rise in drug-resistant parasites and insecticide-resistant mosquitoes. At present, malaria research is focused mainly on the development of drugs with increased therapeutic effects against Plasmodium parasites. However, a vaccine against the disease is preferable over treatment to achieve long-term control. Trials to develop a safe and effective immunization protocol for the control of malaria have been occurring for decades, and continue on today; still, no effective vaccines are available on the market. Recently, peptide-based vaccines have become an attractive alternative approach. These vaccines utilize short protein fragments to induce immune responses against malaria parasites. Peptide-based vaccines are safer than traditional vaccines, relatively inexpensive to produce, and can be composed of multiple T- and B-cell epitopes integrated into one antigenic formulation. Various combinations, based on antigen choice, peptide epitope modification and delivery mechanism, have resulted in numerous potential malaria vaccines candidates; these are presently being studied in both preclinical and clinical trials. This review describes the current landscape of peptide-based vaccines, and addresses obstacles and opportunities in the production of malaria vaccines.

This study explores the properties and potential of magneto-dielectric (MD) material Ni0.25Cu0.25Zn0.50Fe2O4–BaTiO3 as an antenna substrate for miniaturization and bandwidth enhancement. The MD material was synthesized using a solid-state method and different amounts of BaTiO3 (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%) were added to improve its relative permittivity. Various investigations were carried out to analyze the crystallographic structure, microstructure, magnetic properties, permittivity, permeability, and losses of the samples at microwave frequencies. Results show that the MD composite with 5% BaTiO3 achieved a relative permittivity of 12.5 and a permeability of 2.9 at 0.7 GHz has enhanced the antenna's operating bandwidth with a fractional bandwidth of 61.1% and directivity of 3.1 dBi. The MD material with 20% BaTiO3 showed potential as an antenna substrate for miniaturization, with a relative permittivity and permeability of 17.1 and 1.9, respectively. It also displayed better gain (− 8.9 dBi) and radiation efficiency (8%) compared to the antenna with 5% BaTiO 3 (with a gain of − 14.4 dBi and radiation efficiency of 1.8%) as an antenna substrate. Prehistoric human activities have contributed to the dispersal of many culturally important plants. The study of these traditional interactions can alter the way we perceive the natural distribution and dynamics of species and communities. Comprehensive research on native crops combining evolutionary and anthropological data is revealing how ancient human populations influenced their distribution. Although traditional diets also included a suite of non-cultivated plants that in some cases necessitated the development of culturally important technical advances such as the treatment of toxic seed, empirical evidence for their deliberate dispersal by prehistoric peoples remains limited. Here we integrate historic and biocultural research involving Aboriginal people, with chloroplast and nuclear genomic data to demonstrate Aboriginal-mediated dispersal of a non-cultivated rainforest tree.We assembled new anthropological evidence of use and deliberate dispersal of Castanospermum australe (Fabaceae), a non-cultivated culturally important riparian tree that produces toxic but highly nutritious water-dispersed seed. We validated cultural evidence of recent human-mediated dispersal by revealing genomic homogeneity across extensively dissected habitat, multiple catchments and uneven topography in the southern range of this species. We excluded the potential contribution of other dispersal mechanisms based on the absence of suitable vectors and current distributional patterns at higher elevations and away from water courses, and by analyzing a comparative sample from northern Australia.Innovative studies integrating evolutionary and anthropological data will continue to reveal the unexpected impact that prehistoric people have had on current vegetation patterns. A better understanding of how traditional practices shaped species' distribution and assembly will directly inform cultural heritage management strategies, challenge "natural" species distribution assumptions, and provide innovative baseline data for pro-active biodiversity management.
