Abstract

To meet the driven objectives in the metals industry with relatively severe operational environments, the induction motor is generally adopted due to its rigid structure. However, for energy conservation and environmental concerns, some globally enforced regulations have complicated the design and increased the cost of developing high-efficiency induction motors. Because the direct-on-line synchronous reluctance motor (DOL_SynRM) has a comparably robust structure with almost no rotor copper loss, it has become a potential alternative for accomplishing the desired high-efficiency operational objectives. For investigating the line-start capabilities and operational impacts of different DOL_SynRM designs for specific equipment with reasonably good performance predictions, a convenient analytical model is proposed. Supported by the results from both finite-element analyses and experimental measurements, the suitability of the proposed model can thus be confirmed.
