Free-electron lasers generate high-brilliance coherent radiation at wavelengths spanning from the infrared to the X-ray domains. The recent development of short-wavelength seeded free-electron lasers now allows for unprecedented levels of control on longitudinal coherence[1], opening new scientific avenues as ultra-fast dynamics on complex systems and X-ray nonlinear optics. While those devices rely on state-of-the-art large-scale accelerators, advancements on laser-plasma accelerators, which harness giga-volt-per-centimeter accelerating fields, showcase a promising technology as compact drivers for free-electron lasers. Using such miniaturized accelerators, exponential amplification of a shot-noise type of radiation in a self-amplified spontaneous emission configuration was recently achieved [2]. However, employing this compact approach for the delivery of temporally coherent pulses in a controlled manner remained a major challenge. Here, we present the experimental demonstration of a laser-plasma accelerator driven free-electron laser in a seeded configuration, where control over the radiation wavelength is accomplished. Furthermore, the appearance of interference fringes, resulting from the interaction between the phase-locked emitted radiation and the seed, confirms longitudinal coherence. Building on our scientific achievements, we anticipate a straightforward scaling to extreme-ultraviolet wavelengths, paving the way towards university-scale free-electron lasers, unique tools for a multitude of applications. Geometrical cues in the extracellular environment are essential for cells guiding. Conventional fabrications for well-defined microstructures are usually associated with expensive and time-consuming micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), including lithography and etching. Additionally, the microstructures produced on silicon wafers are not amendable after molding, hindering the applicability. Here, we developed a low-cost and efficient fabrication process to generate highly ordered microstructures for cell culture by designing and fabricating a tunable wrinkled on biocompatible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces based on different mechanical properties of the biomaterials. The mechanical properties, including Young's modulus, tensile strength, and thickness ratio between the stiff and soft bilayers, can be determined by the thickness of PDMS film, curing temperature, UV exposure time, applied strain rates during the fabrication, leading to various amplitudes and wavelengths of the wrinkled topography on polymeric materials. Those wrinkled surfaces with micro-pattern are further applied to hCMEC/D cell culture, an immortalized human cerebral microvascular endothelial cell line, to induce cell proliferation and provide guidance for cell arrangement and migration. Therefore, this report sheds light on cell biology and biomedical tissue engineering by delivering an affordable and tunable fabrication process for wrinkles formations on the polymeric thin film.

We present design and realization of an ultrabroadband optical spectrometer capable of measuring the spectral intensity of multioctave-spanning light sources on a single-pulse basis with a dynamic range of up to eight orders of magnitude. The instrument is optimized for the characterization of the temporal structure of femtosecond long electron bunches by analyzing the emitted coherent transition radiation spectra. The spectrometer operates within the spectral range of 250 nm to 11.35 μm, corresponding to 5.5 optical octaves. This is achieved by dividing the signal beam into three spectral groups, each analyzed by a dedicated spectrometer and detector unit. The complete instrument was characterized with regard to wavelength, relative spectral sensitivity, and absolute photometric sensitivity, always accounting for the light polarization and comparing different calibration methods. Finally, the capability of the spectrometer is demonstrated with a coherent transition radiation measurement of a laser wakefield accelerated electron bunch, enabling to determine temporal pulse structures at unprecedented resolution.

We visualize plasma bubbles driven by 0.67 PW laser pulses in plasma of density $n_e \approx 5\times10^{17}$ ${\rm cm}^{-3}$ by imaging Faraday rotation patterns imprinted on linearly-polarized probe pulses of wavelength $\lambda_{pr} = 1.05 \mu$m and duration $\tau_{pr} = 2$ ps or $1$ ps that cross the bubble's path at right angles. When the bubble captures and accelerates tens to hundreds of pC of electron charge, we observe two parallel streaks of length $c\tau_{pr}$ straddling the drive pulse propagation axis, separated by $\sim45$ $\mu$m, in which probe polarization rotates by $0.3^\circ$ to more than $5^\circ$ in opposite directions. Accompanying simulations show that they result from Faraday rotation within portions of dense bubble side walls that are pervaded by the azimuthal magnetic field of accelerating electrons during the probe transit across the bubble. Analysis of the width of the streaks shows that quasi-monoenergetic high-energy electrons and trailing lower energy electrons inside the bubble contribute distinguishable portions of the observed signals, and that relativistic flow of sheath electrons suppresses Faraday rotation from the rear of the bubble. The results demonstrate favorable scaling of Faraday rotation diagnostics to $40\times$ lower plasma density than previously demonstrated., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Edge streams are commonly used to capture interactions in dynamic networks, such as email, social, or computer networks. The problem of detecting anomalies or rare events in edge streams has a wide range of applications. However, it presents many challenges due to lack of labels, a highly dynamic nature of interactions, and the entanglement of temporal and structural changes in the network. Current methods are limited in their ability to address the above challenges and to efficiently process a large number of interactions. Here, we propose F-FADE, a new approach for detection of anomalies in edge streams, which uses a novel frequency-factorization technique to efficiently model the time-evolving distributions of frequencies of interactions between node-pairs. The anomalies are then determined based on the likelihood of the observed frequency of each incoming interaction. F-FADE is able to handle in an online streaming setting a broad variety of anomalies with temporal and structural changes, while requiring only constant memory. Our experiments on one synthetic and six real-world dynamic networks show that F-FADE achieves state of the art performance and may detect anomalies that previous methods are unable to find., Comment: WSDM 2021

Strontium zirconate nickelate [(SZN); Sr0.69Ni0.47Zr0.085O3.75] was synthesized through a sol-gel method by adding nickel (II) acetylacetone instead of titanium isopropoxide, which can effectively make thin films smoother and further act as gate insulators applied in pentacene-based thin-film transistors. Sol-gel SZN thin films were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy to confirm the chemical composition and smooth surface roughness, and the latter property was found to be compatible for pentacene thin film growth. Thus, the electrical characteristics of pentacene-based transistors exhibited a high mobility of 10.04 cm2 V-1s-1 low threshold voltage of -1.51 V,, and low subthreshold swing slope of 350 mV/decade. To realize high mobility mechanisms, intermolecular coupling and reorganization energy of pentacene thin films were introduced. Another purpose of this introduction was to evaluate the higher hopping rate of carriers between the adjacent pentacene molecules on SZN derived from the March-Hush equation than other high-κ traditional sol-gel insulators.

We have experimentally demonstrated ultrafast diagnostics to visualize the laser wakefield acceleration process in a single-shot mode. We measured the Faraday rotation of a probe pulse due to the magnetic field induced by GeV electrons in low-density plasmas. In addition, we improved the temporal resolution of Frequency Domain Streak Camera (FDSC) to ∼10 fs by broadening the bandwidth of the probe beam, enabling visualization of the bubble dynamics. A prototype experiment using the broad bandwidth FDSC was performed.

Several new indolyl secondary phosphine oxides (SPOs), C8H6N–P( O)(H)(tBu) (4a′), MeC8H5N–P( O)(H)(tBu) (4b′), and PhC8H5N–P( O)(H)(tBu) (4c′), were prepared from the reactions of corresponding 1H-indoles with PtBuCl2 and hydrolysis followed. Further reaction of 4a′, a tautomeric form of C8H6N–P(OH)(tBu) (4a), with Pd(COD)Cl2 yielded a di-palladium complex, [(4a)(4a-H+)Pd(μ-Cl)]2 (6a). Crystal structures of PhC8H5N–P(Cl)(tBu) (3c), (4c′) and (6a) were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The stability of this type of SPO is presumably caused by the indolyl scaffold. In addition, SPOs are air- and moisture-stable preligands and are advantageous for the purpose of storage. In this work, these SPO ligands were employed in the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reactions as catalytic precursors. This catalytic condition has been tolerated to a variety of functional groups and the coupling reactions underwent efficiently with the arylbromides and arylchlorides, respectively.

In this study, we investigated whether stress can enhance the toxicity of oligomer Abeta(1-40) in the mouse brain. Stress was applied to the animals, consisting of a 2-day inescapable foot shock followed by 3-weekly situation reminders (SRs). We found that stress significantly affected not only the amygdala-dependent (anxiety) but also the hippocampal-dependent (spatial learning and memory) behaviors through the oxidative damage caused in these two regions. However, oligomer Abeta(1-40) treatment alone did not induce behavioral impairment. In addition, combined oligomer Abeta(1-40) and stress treatment increased the glucocorticoid receptor (GR)/mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) ratio and the expression of corticotrophin releasing factor 1 (CRF-1) receptor in the hippocampus. Changes in the components of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, such as the GR/MR ratio and CRF-1 level, were observed, accompanied by increasing Abeta accumulation, oxidative stress, nuclear transcription factor (NF-kappaB) hypoactivity, and apoptotic signaling in the hippocampus, and decreasing calbindin D28K and NMDA receptor 2A/2B (NR2A/2B) in the hippocampus, along with alteration of the cholinergic neurons (ChAT) in the medium septum/diagnoid band (MS/DB), noradrenergic neurons (TH) in the locus coeruleus (LC), and serotonergic neurons (5-HT) in the Raphe nucleus. Therefore, apoptosis and synaptic dysfunction in the hippocampus severely induced the impairment of spatial learning and memory. These results suggest that stress may play an important role in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and an antioxidant strategy might be a potential therapeutic approach for stress-mediated disorders.

We measure the evolution history of terawatt-laser driven plasma wakefields in the nonlinear bubble regime using an all-optical frequency-domain streak camera (FDSC) technique. The longitudinal profiles of the plasma “bubble” at different propagation distances within a 3 mm long ionized helium gas target are imaged in single shots, illustrating formation, propagation and coalescence of the bubble. 3D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations validate the observed density-dependent bubble evolution, and correlate it with generation of a quasi-monoenergetic ∼ 100 MeV electron beam. To visualize petawatt-laser- or e-beam driven plasma wakefields, FDSC is extended to multi-object-plane imaging (MOPI) to measure evolution of wakefield transverse profiles over acceleration distance up to ∼ 1 m in a single shot.

Pentacene-based organic thin-film transistors (TFTs) with solution-processed barium zirconate titanate as gate dielectrics are studied. The fabricated TFTs show a high field-effect mobility of 7.31 cm2 · V-1 · s-1 at a VG of -3.6 V, a low threshold voltage of -1.60 V, and a low subthreshold slope swing of 162 mV/dec. Moreover, organic inverters with enhancement-mode load and driver are also investigated. The inverters demonstrate a high gain of 9.98, a low operating voltage of -5 V, and a low power dissipation of 1.14 μW. Very good agreements between simulation and experimental results are achieved.

We visualize ps-time-scale evolution of an electron density bubble--a wake structure created in atmospheric density plasma by an intense ultrashort laser pulse--from the phase "streak" that the bubble imprints onto a probe pulse that crosses its path obliquely. Phase streaks, recovered in one shot using frequency-domain interferometric techniques, reveal the formation, propagation, and coalescence of the bubble within a 3 mm long ionized helium gas target. 3D particle-in-cell simulations validate the observed density-dependent bubble evolution, and correlate it with the generation of a quasimonoenergetic ∼ 100 MeV electron beam. The results provide a basis for understanding optimized electron acceleration at a plasma density n(e) ≈ 2 × 10(19) cm(-3), inefficient acceleration at lower density, and dephasing limits at higher density.

We demonstrate single-shot visualization of evolving, laser-driven structures in tenuous plasma over meter-scale paths. An ultrashort probe crossing the object’s path is phase-modulated, then relay-imaged from multiple object planes to separate detectors.

We demonstrate a pump-probe phase-contrast method that reconstructs the spatio-temporal profile of plasma structures at density as low as 1016 cm−3. The method is compatible with very thin, very long, even turbulent media.

The interaction between gene and environment is known to play a major role in the etiology of several neuropsychiatric disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). The present study evaluated whether environmental manipulations such as social isolation may affect the genetic predisposition to accelerate the onset of AD-related symptoms in an adult APP/PS1 double mutant transgenic mouse model. Transgenic and wild-type male mice were housed either singly or in groups from the age of 3 months, and their behavior was compared at 7 months. Isolation had several effects on the APP/PS1 transgenic mice, including exacerbating the impairment of spatial working memory associated with increased Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio in the hippocampus; increased levels of MnSOD in the CA1–CA3 subregions of the hippocampus, basolateral part of the amygdala (BLA), and locus coeruleus (LC); and decreased numbers of cholinergic cells in the diagonal band of Broca (DB), noradrenergic neurons in LC, serotonergic neurons in the Raphe nucleus, and levels of NMDA 2B receptor (NR2B) in the hippocampus region. Our findings demonstrate the susceptibility of APP/PS1 transgenic adult male mice to environmental manipulation and show that social isolation has remarkable effects on the genetically determined AD-like symptoms.
