Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans form dense biofilms together on internal medical devices and in doing so, establish a source of infection that is difficult to treat and can cause extensive local and systemic disease. The goal of the present study was to gain further insight into whether interactions between these two species within a biofilm alter their attachment to artificial surfaces and growth rates. After first establishing that S. aureus and C. albicans interact with one another and grow well together in the described biofilm system, the two species were mixed and attachment was assessed. S. aureus had differing effects on yeast attachment depending on when the two were mixed whereas C. albicans had no noticeable affect on S. aureus attachment. Examination of mixed biofilm structural integrity revealed that pure C. albicans biofilms have higher levels of detachment after 16 h of growth and a lower resistance to shear stress than do mixed biofilms. Similarly, measurement of biofi...

ABSTRACT Owing to the rapid advancement of technologies, today's mobile phones (e.g., smartphones) can not only fulfill users' basic requirements for communication purposes but also serve as powerful pervasive devices with various valuable functions for users. With wide and close Internet accessibility, smartphones nowadays inevitably suffer security threats and information security management (ISM) issues like common computers do. In this research, information security related trust issues are investigated through a user-based empirical study. Our research project aims to study the relationships between smartphone users' computer literacy, network literacy, knowledge on mobile phone viruses, and trust in ISM principles (i.e., confidentiality, integrity, and availability). The study results indicate that smartphone users' network literacy positively influence their knowledge on mobile phone viruses, whereas users' computer literacy is not significantly associated with their knowledge on mobile phone viruses. Moreover, smartphone users' knowledge on mobile phone viruses would significantly affect their trusts in three ISM principles. The validated research model and corresponding findings can be referenced by business executives and ISM decision makers in electronic commerce (e-commerce) for making favorable tactics to catch the revolutionary benefits offered by effective ISM policies in the ubiquitous computing environment. LYSOZYMES , *CONTACT lenses , *ADHESION , *AWARDS , *UNIVERSITIES & colleges - Abstract
The adhesion of tear proteins to contact lenses contributes to lens deterioration and ocular pathology. Tears contain a number of proteins, predominantly lysozyme. Here we examine the adhesion of human lysozyme to FDA group III (low water, ionic) contact lenses comprised of a copolymer of silicon vinyl carbamate, N-vinyl-pyrrolidone, with a siloxane crosslinker and a vinyl alanine wetting monomer. These lenses are 36% water by weight. Lenses were incubated in a solution of lysozyme for 1, 2, 3, and 4 days, and protein adhesion was determined using the bicinchoninic acid assay. In contrast to our previous study, where non-human lysozyme adhered to contact lenses from all four FDA Groups in an up-down-up-down pattern, human lysozyme adhered to these lenses in an early peak and subsequently decreasing fashion. The concentration of lysozyme in the incubation solution decreased rapidly, becoming almost undetectable by the fifth day of the experiment, and this may have limited lysozyme adhesion during the later days of the experiment. These lenses appear to have a high affinity for lysozyme, in keeping with the ionic nature of the polymers from which they were made. - Abstract
Clinical PET acquisitions of the heart suffer from artefacts and drops in image quality due to the poor spatial resolution of the PET system. Moreover, cardiac PET images are further degraded by the blur caused by the breathing and beating motions, thus hampering diagnosis and evaluation of myocardial pathologies. Anatomy-enhanced PET reconstruction, using a high-resolution CT, has proven useful in brain imaging. In cardiac datasets however, due to the motion artefacts, the application of any restoring technique on datasets affected by motion blur needs to be preceded by the validation of the proposed method on realistic static datasets. In this work, the validation is performed using static cardiac ex vivo datasets obtained from a number of sacrificed sheep, scanned on a clinical PET/CT scanner. The aim of this work is to assess the effectiveness of reconstructions of the acquired datasets with different CT-based anatomical priors, in comparison to reconstructions currently applied in clinical practise. The gold standard to which all reconstructions are compared consists of images of the same hearts scanned on a small-animal PET scanner, whose high spatial resolution allows for almost artefact-free images. Encouraging results were obtained so far, with improvements in volume delineation and uniformity of activity values when anatomical information was used. Fig 1 shows the gold standard image (left) compared to a regular clinical reconstruction (middle) and to a reconstruction using the high-resolution CT as anatomical information (right).
