Supplementation with select nutrients facilitate wound healing, thereby supporting the association between nutrition and wound healing. In recent years, studies have assessed the relationship of amino acid supplements and basic nutrition with wound healing. The present study is a case report on about a 35-year-old woman whose wound measured 0.7 × 1 cm2 after laparoscopic surgery but did not heal for more than 5 weeks after surgery and drainage tube removal. Nutritional care comprising the required calories and a high-protein diet was initiated. The average actual daily calorie intake was 1,556 kcal (88% of the required amount), and the average daily protein intake was 91 g (126% of the required amount). After 11 days on a diet containing mixed amino acids (arginine, glutamine, and beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate), the wound size reduced from 0.7 × 1 cm2 to 0.3 × 0.5 cm2. The case findings suggest that the provision of sufficient calories and protein nutrition, supplemented with mixed amino acids containing arginine, glutamine, and beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate can contribute to the healing of chronic wounds.

The first wave of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in Taiwan occurred in May 2021. The risk for and severity of this disease vary and are highly dependent on personal habits and comorbidities. Moreover, the gut microbiome, which may be affected by diet, is highly susceptible with regard to the risk and severity of infectious diseases such as COVID-19. The relationship between dietary habits, nutritional status, and the effects of these factors on the immune system in the context of a global pandemic is an extremely important topic of immediate concern. Hence, the aim of this study was to explore the effect of vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets on COVID-19 severity during the pandemic. We conducted a retrospective evaluation of 509 patients who had been diagnosed with COVID-19 at a single medical center between May 2021 and August 2021. Patients were divided into three groups according to disease severity. For patients aged ≥65 years, COVID-19 symptom severity was statistically significantly and inversely associated with the adherence to a vegetarian diet (p = 0.013). Moreover, subgroup analysis results showed that older COVID-19 patients and those with a non-vegetarian diet had a higher risk of contracting critically severe COVID-19 [adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 5.434, p = 0.005]. Further research is needed to determine the effects of dietary habits on COVID-19 risk and severity during the global pandemic.

Malnutrition is an important issue in hospitalized patients. Poor nutrition may lead to increased risk of morbidity and death, impaired mental and physical conditions, apathy, depression, self-neglect, increased risk of medical complications, increased risk of pressure ulcers, reduced immune response, delayed wound healing, longer hospital stays, and reduced quality of life. However, few studies have investigated malnutrition in psychiatric patients. Psychiatric patients are known to have an increased risk of malnutrition, but psychiatric hospitals rarely conduct physical examinations and nutritional assessments. In this preliminary study, patients from a psychiatric ward of the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital were chosen using the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool. We used the before-and-after analysis to test the effect of a nutrition intervention on the selected parameters. We found that patients who had an impaired nutritional status showed significant increases in body weight (mean: 43.6 ± 7.5 vs. 46.5 ± 8.2 kg; P < 0.001), BMI (mean: 16.8 ± 2.0 vs. 17.9 ± 2.1 kg/m2; P < 0.001), and total calorie intake (mean: 1128 ± 230 vs. 1378 ± 320 Kcal; P < 0.001). Nutritional intervention significantly improved body weight, BMI, and total calorie intake. Nutritional intervention may help prevent malnutrition and improve the management of psychiatric patients.

Background: prediabetes prevention and management are the main methods used to combat the prevalence of diabetes. Exploratory factor analysis is an upcoming method that is successful in identifying dietary patterns that correlate with healthy or unhealthy outcomes. Aim: this study aims to identify dietary patterns in Taiwan that are associated with the risk of prediabetes. Methods: anthropometric, blood glucose, 3 d/24 h dietary records, and food frequency questionnaire data were collected from subjects recruited at Taipei Tzu-Chi Hospital. The following five dietary patterns were identified using factor analysis: Western, prudent, convenience, Asian traditional, and continental. This cross-sectional study compares tertiles of dietary patterns and analyzes the significance of the characteristics. Results: the Western and the prudent patterns are the major dietary patterns found in other studies. A higher factor loading in the Western pattern is significantly related to a higher risk of prediabetes. A higher factor loading in the continental pattern is significantly related to a lower risk of prediabetes. Conclusion: decreasing meat and seafood consumption while increasing egg, coffee, and milk consumption may be associated with a decreased risk for prediabetes.

Vegetarian diet is usually thought to be healthy for the population; however, an unbalanced vegetarian diet may result in hyperlipidemia. Here, we report the case of a 55-year-old lacto-ovo vegetarian with hypercholesterolemia who underwent an effective dietary intervention. After the dietitian’s assessment, an educational and individual meal plan was designed, which complied with the Taiwan vegetarian guideline. Results indicated that the total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein, and low-density lipoprotein levels returned to their normal ranges within 4 weeks of intervention. Therefore, the intervention (i.e., dietitian’s individual nutritional education) and consuming 2 meals per day, designed to comply with the Taiwan vegetarian guideline, could be beneficial for serum lipid profiles.

Background Studies on the relationship between vegetarian diet and breast cancer in Asian populations are limited. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between vegetarian diet, dietary patterns, and breast cancer in Taiwanese women. Methods This case-control study compared the dietary patterns of 233 breast cancer patients and 236 age-matched controls. A questionnaire about vegetarian diets and 28 frequently-consumed food items was administered to these 469 patients in the surgical department of Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital. Serum biochemical status was also examined. Results There were no significant differences between the two groups for age, education, family history, oral contraceptive usage, or regular exercise. Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a condition involving several molecular mechanisms related to the intestinal microbiota for its development. Intestinal fatty acid‐binding protein (I‐FABP) is a sensitive marker to study enterocyte damage. A prebiotic is a non‐digestible food ingredient that improves host health by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activities of bacteria in the colon. We aimed to clarify the currently described effects of prebiotics in the prevention and management of T2DM. Methods In this case‐control study, we chose 68 participants with T2DM and 52 healthy participants. Both groups were further divided based on consumption of prebiotics. Forty participants with T2DM consumed prebiotics, and 28 did not; 30 healthy volunteers consumed prebiotics, and 22 did not. We used the analysis of variance to compare the inflammation levels between the case and control groups. Multiple linear regression was performed for the significantly correlated groups to estimate the influence of prebiotics on inflammation level. Results Age was a significant factor for difference in I‐FABP levels (standardized coefficient: 0.06; P = .047). The analysis of eating habits showed that vegetarian diets produced lower I‐FABP levels than non‐vegetarian diets (standardized coefficient: −2.55; P = .022). Results showed that patients with T2DM who consumed prebiotics expressed lower I‐FABP levels, reflecting an improvement in inflammation level, than the healthy volunteers who did not consume prebiotics (standardized coefficient: −3.20; P = .019). Conclusions For patients with T2DM, prebiotics supplemented produced no significant impact on serum I‐FABP levels., To evaluate effects of prebiotics in the prevention and management T2DM, totally 120 patients were recruited for the initial screening with I‐FABP. The participants in this study had no history of gastrointestinal disease and had not been treated with antibiotics or laxatives within 3 months before the experiment; all T2DM patients received dietary advice to control and treat diabetes. Blood or urine samples were collected at baseline and at 1, 3, and 6 months, followed by proper statistical analysis.

Protein-energy wasting is prevalent in peritoneal dialysis patients, which causes a heavy burden for individuals and healthcare systems. We aimed to investigate the effect of nutritional education, and/or protein supplementation on nutritional biomarkers in hypoalbuminemic peritoneal dialysis patients. A quasi-experimental study was conducted in two dialysis centers at Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital and Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital. Patients were allocated in three groups including control (n = 12), milk protein (n = 21) and soy protein (n = 20). All patients received dietary guidelines from dietitians and completed 3-day dietary records during monthly visits for consecutive three months. Nutrients were analyzed using Nutritionist Professional software. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, albumin, total protein, hemoglobin, serum calcium, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium were assessed monthly. Total cholesterol and triglycerides were measured every three months. After three-month intervention, protein intake (percent of total calories), and serum albumin were significantly increased in three groups. Protein, phosphorus intake, and BUN were increased in two intervention groups. Total serum protein increased in control and milk protein groups, and creatinine increased the control group. Serum phosphorus was not significantly changed. Nutritional education alone, or combined with protein supplementation, significantly improve protein intake, and nutritional status by increasing serum albumin, but not serum phosphorus in hypoalbuminemic peritoneal dialysis patients.

PURPOSE To assess the existence of alterations in the micro-integrity of the fasciculus in prediabetic subjects. The issue of micro-integrity in white matter tracts has not been adequately addressed in prediabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty-four prediabetic subjects and 54 controls were enrolled. All participants completed 24-hour diet records and 3-day diet records and received diffusion tensor imaging at 3T. The data for white matter micro-integrity were analyzed and compared between prediabetic subjects and controls with age and gender as covariates. In addition, voxel-wise regression between white matter micro-integrity, diet, and preprandial glucose levels were used to explore the relationship between white matter micro-integrity and diet or serum glucose levels. RESULTS We found that prediabetic subjects had significant reductions in the micro-integrity of bilateral anterior thalamic radiation, left inferior longitudinal fasciculus, and left superior longitudinal fasciculus (corrected P < 0.05). In addition, total carbohydrate intake amount and preprandial serum glucose levels were negatively correlated with the micro-integrity in the left inferior longitudinal fasciculus and left anterior thalamic radiation (r: -0.47, corrected P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Restrictive alterations in the white matter micro-integrity of the anterior thalamic radiation and inferior and superior longitudinal fasciculi might represent the initial "hot spots" for white matter tract alterations, which might play a role in the development of prediabetes. This research aims at understanding the heat transfer phenomenon in the Bi 2 Te 3 nanoprism-assembled films. For obtaining the associated effective thermal conductivity, the effective-medium-approximation (EMA) models existing in literature were examined and properly modified for prediction and Monte-Carlo numerical experiments based on unstructured grids were performed for confirmation. Cross-plane and in-plane thermal conductivities were both explored. For model predictions, the characteristic grain size of the nanoprisms is defined as either the phonon mean free path purely due to the grain boundary scattering (i.e. excluding the intrinsic scattering) or the averaged hydraulic diameter. A combination of a non-dilute 2D EMA model with the triple bond percolation theory turns out to be the best model for predicting the in-plane thermal conductivity. On the other hand, the evaluation of the cross-plane thermal conductivity by treating the nanoprisms as thermal conductors connected in parallel is satisfactory. The investigation shows that in addition to porosity, the scattering at the grain boundaries plays a dominant role in reducing the heat transfer in the direction perpendicular to the boundaries; the in-plane thermal conductivity is therefore much smaller than the cross-plane one.

Objective: This is an Asian study, which was designed to examine the correlations between biochemical data and food composition of diabetic patients in Taiwan. Methods: One hundred and seventy Taiwanese diabetic patients were enrolled. The correlations between biochemical data and diet composition (from 24-hour recall of intake food) of these patients were explored (Spearman correlation, p < 0.05). Diet components were also correlated with each other to show diet characteristics of diabetic patients in Taiwan. Linear regression was also performed for the significantly correlated groups to estimate possible impacts from diet composition to biochemical data. Results: Postprandial serum glucose level was negatively correlated with fat percentage of diet, intake amount of polyunsaturated fatty acid and fiber diet composition. Hemoglobin A1c was negatively correlated with fat diet, polyunsaturated fatty acid and vegetable diet. Fat composition, calorie percentage accounted by polyunsaturated fatty acid and monounsaturated fatty acid in diet seemed to be negatively correlated with sugar percentage of diet and positively correlated with vegetable and fiber composition of diet. Linear regression showed that intake amount of polyunsaturated fatty acid, calorie percentage accounted by polyunsaturated fatty acid, fat percentage of diet, vegetable composition of diet would predict lower hemoglobin A1c and postprandial blood sugar. Besides, higher percentage of fat diet composition could predict higher percentage of vegetable diet composition in Taiwanese diabetic patients. Conclusion: Fat diet might not elevate serum glucose. Vegetable diet and polyunsaturated fatty acid diet composition might be correlated with better sugar control in Taiwanese diabetic patients.

Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text, We investigated the treatment effects of aripiprazole monotherapy in first-episode medication-naïve patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The accompanying changes in the gray matter volume (GMV) were also explored. Fifteen patients completed the trial and received structural scans by 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging at baseline and partially responding state (sixth week). To account for the test–retest bias, 27 healthy controls were scanned twice within 6 weeks. We utilized optimized voxel-based morphometry with different comparisons between groups. The partially responding patients with MDD had greater GMV in left middle frontal gyrus and left superior parietal gyrus when compared with baseline. However, they had decreases in the GMV of right orbitofrontal gyrus and right inferior temporal gyrus after response. The partially responding patients with MDD still had residual GMV deficits in right superior frontal gyrus when compared with controls. However, the lack of second patient group without aripiprazole intervention would be a significant limitation to interpret the aripiprazole-specific effects on GMV. The changes in the GMV of fronto-parieto-temporal regions and residual GMV deficits in the superior frontal gyrus might represent “state-dependent brain changes” and “residual-deficit brain regions,” respectively, for aripiprzole monotherapy in MDD.

The atypical antipsychotics were believed to induce less extrapyramidal syndrome, including tardive dyskinesia (TD). Since the introduction of the quetiapine, it is also reported with less TD side effects. It even can relieve the symptoms of severe TD and reduce the risk of TD. The quetiapine's low affinity and fast dissociation from postsynaptic dopamine D2 receptors should give the least risk of producing the symptoms of TD. The quetiapine even can reduce the TD side effects related to clozapine, which has the lowest risk for TD. However, since the first case report of TD side effects related to quetiapine published on 1999, the safety of quetiapine in TD aspect has been questioned. Therefore, we want to share this case report, which was written to describe the severe late-onset TD side effects after long-term use of quetiapine in a patient with psychotic depression. The patient had no significant findings after concurrent comprehensive neurological examinations, magnetic resonance imaging of brain and electroencephalogram since the onset of TD.

Here we wanted to present a refractory chronic migraine case, who had significant improvements in migraine after using ramelteon. The possible mechanism for the ramelteon in the migraine relief might be related to melatonin effects.

The impacts from the bupropion on the brain structures have seldom been mentioned in the literature. The bupropion is a kind of antidepressant with dual action in the norepinephrine and dopamine receptors. Here we have a case to share about the bupropion-related effects in the brain structure.

The neurophysiology of prediabetes plays an important role in preventive medicine. The dysregulation of glucose metabolism is likely linked to changes in neuron-related gray matter. Therefore, we designed this study to investigate gray matter alterations in medication-naive prediabetic patients. We expected to find alterations in the gray matter of prediabetic patients. A total of 64 prediabetic patients and 54 controls were enrolled. All subjects received T1 scans using a 3-T magnetic resonance imaging machine. Subjects also completed nutritional intake records at the 24-hour and 3-day time points to determine their carbohydrate, protein, fat, and total calorie intake. We utilized optimized voxel-based morphometry to estimate the gray matter differences between the patients and controls. In addition, the preprandial serum glucose level and the carbohydrate, protein, fat, and total calorie intake levels were tested to determine whether these parameters were correlated with the gray matter volume. Objectives We investigated the association between dietary patterns and breast cancer risk in Taiwan. Materials and Methods This case–control study compared the dietary patterns between 98 breast cancer patients and 103 age-matched controls. A questionnaire survey about 27 frequently consumed food items was conducted among 201 patients in a general surgical ward. Serum albumin, triglyceride, and total cholesterol levels were also investigated. Results Five dietary patterns were defined via the principle component analysis: the meat-fat, pickle–vegetable, sugar–fried food, soy, and coffee–egg patterns. For the meat-fat dietary pattern, the third quartile and fourth quartile were significantly associated with higher breast cancer risk than the first quartile and second quartile with an odds ratio of 2.86 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.25–6.53] and 3.11 (95% CI = 1.33–7.27) respectively; p = 0.002. In addition, cooking with oil was reported significantly more often in the fourth meat-fat dietary pattern quartile, as shown by the responses to eight out of 12 questions about cooking methods. Conclusion These results revealed that meat was associated with a higher breast cancer risk, and a high fat intake might play an important role in this association.
