The distal femur is one of the most common sites for primary bone tumors. As the tumor progresses and bone destruction worsens, it can severely affect knee function and even pose a threat to life. In cases where only one condyle is affected and requires resection, preserving the healthy contralateral condyle can substantially enhance the biomechanics of the knee. Furthermore, preserving bone stock may enable future salvage procedures in the event of initial surgery failure, be it from fractures or osteoarthritis. Distal femoral unicondyle resection can offer better functional outcomes in select cases. However, it is essential to prioritize oncological safety with adequate margins over short‐term knee function. Currently, the primary methods for reconstruction after the excision of a unicondylar tumor include allograft transplantation (bi‐ or uni‐condylar) and prosthetic or allograft‐prosthesis composite replacement (APC). However, there is currently some controversy regarding the optimal surgical reconstruction method, and a consensus within the academic community has yet to be reached. Moreover, due to the rarity of bone tumors, extensive clinical data from a single center is limited. Current studies are mainly retrospective and single‐center, lacking sufficient cases and follow‐up duration. This article reviews surgical reconstruction after solitary condylar excision in distal femoral tumors. It summarizes, compares, and analyzes mainstream reconstruction methods, exploring their technical details and clinical outcomes to highlight their potential in bone oncology.

Abstract Introduction Walking stands as the most prevalent physical activity in the daily lives of individuals and is closely associated with physical functioning and the aging process. Nonetheless, the precise cause-and-effect connection between walking and aging remains unexplored. The epigenetic clock emerges as the most promising biological indicator of aging, capable of mirroring the biological age of the human body and facilitating an investigation into the association between walking and aging. Our primary objective is to investigate the causal impact of walking with epigenetic age acceleration (EAA). Methods We conducted a two-sample two-way Mendelian randomization (MR) study to investigate the causal relationship between walking and EAA. Walking and Leisure sedentary behavior data were sourced from UK Biobank, while EAA data were gathered from a total of 28 cohorts. The MR analysis was carried out using several methods, including the inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, MR-Egger, and robust adjusted profile score (RAPS). To ensure the robustness of our findings, we conducted sensitivity analyses, which involved the MR-Egger intercept test, Cochran’s Q test, and MR-PRESSO, to account for and mitigate potential pleiotropy. Results The IVW MR results indicate a significant impact of usual walking pace on GrimAge (BETA = − 1.84, 95% CI (− 2.94, − 0.75)), PhenoAge (BETA = − 1.57, 95% CI (− 3.05, − 0.08)), Horvath (BETA = − 1.09 (− 2.14, − 0.04)), and Hannum (BETA = − 1.63, 95% CI (− 2.70, − 0.56)). Usual walking pace is significantly associated with a delay in epigenetic aging acceleration (EAA) (P 0.05). Conclusion Our evidence demonstrates that a higher usual walking pace is associated with a deceleration of the acceleration of all four classical epigenetic clocks acceleration.

This study reports the preparation of two single-phase high-entropy rare-earth niobates (RE1/5Ho1/5Er1/5Y1/5Yb1/5)3NbO7, (RE = Ce, Lu), and two composite-phase high-entropy rare-earth niobates (RE1/5Ho1/5Er1/5Y1/5Yb1/5)3NbO7:(RE1/5Ho1/5Er1/5Y1/5Yb1/5)NbO4 = 1:2, (RE = Ce, Lu) via solid-phase synthesis. The interactions of these samples with molten calcium-magnesium-aluminum-silicates (CMAS) were studied at 1300 °C to explore their performance and mechanism in CMAS corrosion. The results indicate that the corrosion process involves the phase transformation of RE3NbO7 and the formation of apatite products. The Ce-composition sample exhibits superior performance in terms of reaction layer thickness, remaining CMAS thickness, and RE3+ content in the remaining CMAS. These findings underscore the potential application of high-entropy rare-earth niobates in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) and contribute to understanding niobate system resistance to CMAS corrosion.

Objective It is unclear whether less acetabular coverage is associated with the failure of core decompression (CD) for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). This study aimed to investigate the clinical outcomes of CD for ONFH with small‐ or medium‐sized pre‐collapse lesions, and determine what factors, especially acetabular anatomical parameters, predict the failure of CD. Methods Between January 2010 and December 2022, we retrospectively reviewed 269 consecutive CDs in 188 patients diagnosed with ONFH with small‐ or medium‐sized pre‐collapse lesions. The Kaplan–Meier method was used to evaluate the survival rate of CD for ONFH with progression of collapse or conversion to total hip arthroplasty (THA) as the endpoint. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the potential risk factors for the failure of CD. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was further performed with conversion to THA as the endpoint to determine the predictive value of these factors. Results The overall 5‐year survival rate of CD for ONFH with small‐ or medium‐sized pre‐collapse lesions was 74.3% (95% confidence interval (CI) 69.0%–81.1%) with progression of collapse as the endpoint and 83.9% (95% CI 79.3%–88.7%) with conversion to THA as the endpoint. Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that bilateral affected hips was significantly associated with progression of collapse, and center‐edge angle (CEA), sharp angle, acetabular head index (AHI), as well as acetabular depth ratio (ADR) were significantly associated with both progression of collapse and conversion to THA. Multivariate logistic regression analysis further indicated that CEA and AHI were independent risk factors for both progression of collapse and conversion to THA. ROC curve analysis with conversion to THA as the endpoint revealed that the cutoff values for CEA and AHI were 26.8° (sensitivity = 74.4%, specificity = 78.6%, area under the curve (AUC) = 0.809) and 79.8 (sensitivity = 78.4%, specificity = 73.8%, AUC = 0.818), respectively. Conclusions CD showed satisfactory clinical outcomes for ONFH with small‐ or medium‐sized pre‐collapse lesions where less acetabular coverage with a CEA

In this research, a novel method for regulating components in RE2SiO5/RE2Si2O7 multiphase silicates was developed, combining the benefits of a suitable thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) and outstanding corrosion resistance against calcium–magnesium–alumino–silicate (CMAS). This approach enhanced the overall thermophysical properties. Additionally, the results from the CMAS corrosion resistance test indicated that (Lu1/3Yb1/3Tm1/3)2SiO5/(Lu1/3Yb1/3Tm1/3)2Si2O7 and (Lu1/4Yb1/4Tm1/4Er1/4)2SiO5/(Lu1/4Yb1/4Tm1/4Er1/4)2Si2O7 exhibited exceptional resistance to CMAS penetration, even at temperatures up to 1500 °C. To comprehend the corrosion mechanism of CMAS on these silicates, we introduced a reaction–diffusion model, which involved observing the changes in the interface between the corrosion product layer and the silicate block. This was achieved using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). These findings lay a theoretical basis for selecting rare earth elements in RE2SiO5/RE2Si2O7 multiphase silicates based on the radii of different rare earth cations.

Abstract The cognitive problems are prominent in the context of global aging, and the traditional Mendelian randomization method is not applicable to ordered multi-categorical exposures. Therefore, we aimed to address this issue through the development of a method and to investigate the causal inference of cognitive-related lifestyle factors. The study sample was derived from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, which included 897 older adults aged 65 + . This study used genome-wide association analysis to screen genetic loci as instrumental variables and innovatively combined maximum likelihood estimation to infer causal associations between ordered multi-categorical exposures (diet, exercise, etc.) and continuous outcomes (cognitive level). The causal inference method for ordered multi-categorical exposures developed in this study was simple, easy to implement, and able to effectively and reliably discover the potential causal associations between variables. Through this method, we found a potential positive causal association between exercise status and cognitive level in Chinese older adults ( $$\widehat{\beta }$$ β ^ = 1.883, 95%CI 0.182–3.512), in which there was no horizontal pleiotropy (p = 0.370). The study provided a causal inference method applicable to ordered multi-categorical exposures, that addressed the limitations of the traditional Mendelian randomization method.

Abstract The majority of genic transcription is intronic. Introns are removed by splicing as branched lariat RNAs which require rapid recycling. The branch site is recognized during splicing catalysis and later debranched by Dbr1 in the rate-limiting step of lariat turnover. Through generation of a viable DBR1 knockout cell line, we find the predominantly nuclear Dbr1 enzyme to encode the sole debranching activity in human cells. Dbr1 preferentially debranches substrates that contain canonical U2 binding motifs, suggesting that branchsites discovered through sequencing do not necessarily represent those favored by the spliceosome. We find that Dbr1 also exhibits specificity for particular 5’ splice site sequences. We identify Dbr1 interactors through co-immunoprecipitation mass spectrometry. We present a mechanistic model for Dbr1 recruitment to the branchpoint through the intron-binding protein AQR. In addition to a 20-fold increase in lariats, Dbr1 depletion increases exon skipping. Using ADAR fusions to timestamp lariats, we demonstrate a defect in spliceosome recycling. In the absence of Dbr1, spliceosomal components remain associated with the lariat for a longer period of time. As splicing is co-transcriptional, slower recycling increases the likelihood that downstream exons will be available for exon skipping.

Abstract It is difficult to obtain a single-phase environmental barrier coating material that simultaneously offers the advantages of low thermal conductivity, a suitable coefficient of thermal expansion, and excellent corrosion resistance. Herein, to synthesize the advantages of single-phase materials, we have developed an effective approach for the design of high-entropy multiphase ceramics of rare earth oxides and silicates. Such a specific design approach is capable of making high-entropy RE2SiO5/RE2O3 and RE2SiO5/RE2Si2O7 (RE = Lu, Yb, Tm, Er, Ho, and Y) multiphase ceramics as two types of potential environmental barrier coating materials for Al2O3f/Al2O3 and SiCf/SiC ceramic matrix composites.

Abstract Check dams on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) have captured billions of tons of eroded sediment, substantially reducing sediment load in the Yellow River. However, uncertainties persist regarding the precise sediment capture and the role of these dams in Yellow River flow and sediment dynamics due to the lack of available spatial distribution datasets. We produced the first vectorized dataset of silted land formed by check dams on the CLP, combining high-resolution and easily accessible Google Earth images with object-based classification methods. The accuracy of the dataset was verified by 1947 collected test samples, and the producer’s accuracy and user’s accuracy of the dam lands were 88.9% and 99.5%, respectively. Our dataset not only provides fundamental information for accurately assessing the ecosystem service functions of check dams, but also helps to interpret current changes in sediment delivery of the Yellow River and plan future soil and water conservation projects.

The presented research introduces a novel hybrid deep learning approach for the dynamic prediction of the attitude and position of super-large diameter shields - a critical consideration for construction safety and tunnel lining quality. This study proposes a hybrid deep learning approach for predicting dynamic attitude and position prediction of super-large diameter shield. The approach consists of principal component analysis (PCA) and temporal convolutional network (TCN). The former is used for employing feature level fusion based on features of the shield data to reduce uncertainty, improve accuracy and the data effect, and 9 sets of required principal component characteristic data are obtained. The latter is adopted to process sequence data in predicting the dynamic attitude and position for the advantages and potential of convolution network. The approach’s effectiveness is exemplified using data from a tunnel construction project in China. The obtained results show remarkable accuracy in predicting the global attitude and position, with an average error ratio of less than 2 mm on four shield outputs in 97.30% of cases. Moreover, the approach displays strong performance in accurately predicting sudden fluctuations in shield attitude and position, with an average prediction accuracy of 89.68%. The proposed hybrid model demonstrates superiority over TCN, long short-term memory (LSTM), and recurrent neural network (RNN) in multiple indexes. Shapley additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis is also performed to investigate the significance of different data features in the prediction process. This study provides a real-time warning for the shield driver to adjust the attitude and position of super-large diameter shields.

Background: Evidence linking nitrogen dioxide (NO2) air pollution to life span of high-vulnerability older adults is extensively scarce in low- and middle-income countries. This study seeks to quantify mortality risk, excess deaths, and loss of life expectancy (LLE) associated with long-term exposure to NO2 among elderly individuals in China. Methods: A nationwide dynamic cohort of 20352 respondents ≥65 years old were enrolled from the China Longitudinal Health and Longevity Survey during 2005–2018. Residential exposures to NO2 and co-pollutants were assessed by well-validated spatiotemporal prediction models. A Cox regression model with time-dependent covariates was utilized to quantify the association of all-cause mortality with NO2 exposure, controlling for confounders such as demographics, lifestyle, health status, and ambient temperature. NO2-attributable deaths and LLE were evaluated for the years 2010 and 2020 based on the pooled NO2-mortality relation derived from multi-national cohort investigations. Decomposition analyses were conducted to dissociate net shift in NO2-related deaths between 2010 and 2020 into four primary contributing factors. Results: A total of 14313 deaths were recorded during follow-up of approximately 100 hundred person-years (median 3.6 years). We observed an approximately linear relationship (nonlinear P = 0.882) of NO2 exposure with all-cause death across a broad range from 6.6 to 95.7 μg/m3. Every 10-μg/m3 rise in yearly average NO2 concentration was linked to a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.045 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.031–1.059). In the updated meta-analysis of this study and 9 existing cohorts, we estimated a pooled HR of 1.043 (95% CI: 1.023–1.063) for each 10-μg/m3 growth in NO2. Reaching a 10-μg/m3 counterfactual target of NO2 concentration in China could avoid 0.33 (95% empirical CI: 0.19–0.49) million premature deaths and an LLE of 0.40 (95% empirical CI: 0.23–0.59) years in 2010, which greatly dropped to 0.24 (95% empirical CI: 0.14–0.36) million deaths and 0.21 (95% empirical CI: 0.12–0.31) years of LLE in 2020. The net fall in NO2-attributable deaths (–26.8%) between 2010 and 2020 was primarily driven by the declines in both NO2 concentration (–41.6%) and mortality rate (–27.1%) under population growth (+41.0%) and age structure transition (+0.9%). Conclusions: Our findings provide national evidence for increased risk of premature death and loss of life expectancy attributed to later-life NO2 exposure among the elderly in China. In an accelerated aging society, strengthened clean air actions should be formulated to minimize the health burden and regional inequality in NO2-attributable mortality.

Multiphase design is a promising approach to achieve superior ablation resistance of multicomponent ultra-high temperature ceramic, while understanding the ablation mechanism is the foundation. Here, through investigating a three-phase multicomponent ceramic consisting of Hf-rich carbide, Nb-rich carbide, and Zr-rich silicide phases, we report a newly discovered solid-state reaction process among multiphase multicomponent ceramic during ablation. It was found that this solid-state reaction occurred in the matrix/oxide scale interface region. In this process, metal cations are counter-diffused between the multicomponent phases, thereby resulting in their composition evolution, which allows the multicomponent phases to exist stably under a higher oxygen partial pressure, leading to the improvement of thermodynamic stability of three-phase multicomponent ceramic. Additionally, this solid-state reaction process appears synergistic with the preferential oxidation behavior among the oxide scale in enhancing the ablation performance.

Abstract For decreasing the global cost of corrosion, it is essential to understand the intricate mechanisms of corrosion and enhance the corrosion resistance of materials. However, the ambiguity surrounding the dominant mechanism of calcium‐magnesium aluminosilicate (CMAS) molten salt corrosion in extreme environments hinders the mix‐and‐matching of the key rare earth elements for increasing the resistance of monosilicates against corrosion of CMAS. Herein, an approach based on correlated electron microscopy techniques combined with density functional theory calculations is presented to elucidate the complex interplay of competing mechanisms that control the corrosion of CMAS of monosilicates. These findings reveal a competition between thermodynamics and kinetics that relies on the temperatures and corrosion processes. Innovative medium‐entropy monosilicates with exceptional corrosion resistance even at 1500 °C are developed. This is achieved by precisely modulating the radii of rare earth ions in monosilicates to strike a delicate balance between the competition in thermodynamics and kinetics. After 50 and 100 h of corrosion, the thinnest reactive layers are measured to be only 28.8 and 35.4 µm, respectively.

ObjectiveDiagnosing tuberculosis (TB) can be particularly challenging in the absence of sputum for pulmonary tuberculosis cases and extrapulmonary TB (EPTB). This study evaluated the utility of nanopore-based targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) for diagnosing TB in tissue samples, and compared its efficacy with other established diagnostic methods.MethodsA total of 110 tissue samples from clinical cases were examined. The sensitivity and specificity of tNGS were benchmarked against a range of existing diagnostic approaches including hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining in conjunction with acid-fast bacilli (AFB) detection, HE staining combined with PCR, HE staining paired with immunohistochemistry (IHC) using anti-MPT64, and the Xpert Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)/rifampicin (RIF) assay.ResultsThe sensitivity and specificity of tNGS were 88.2 and 94.1%, respectively. The respective sensitivities for HE staining combined with AFB, HE staining combined with PCR, HE staining combined with IHC using anti-MPT64, and Xpert MTB/RIF were 30.1, 49.5, 47.3, and 59.1%. The specificities for these methods were 82.4, 88.2, 94.1, and 94.1%, respectively. Analysis of drug resistance based on tNGS results indicated that 10 of 93 TB patients (10.75%) had potential drug resistance.ConclusionTargeted next-generation sequencing achieved higher accuracy than other established diagnostic methods, and can play a crucial role in the rapid and accurate diagnosis of TB, including drug-resistant TB.

Summary: Background: Urban living is linked to better health outcomes due to a combination of enhanced access to healthcare, transportation, and human development opportunities. However, spatial inequalities lead to disparities, resulting in urban health advantages and penalties. Understanding the relationship between health and urban development is needed to generate empirical evidence in promoting healthy aging populations. This study provides a comparative analysis using epidemiological evidence across diverse major Chinese cities, examining how their unique urban development trajectories over time have impacted the health of their aging residents. Methods: We tracked changes in air pollution (NO2, PM2.5, O3), green space (measured by NDVI), road infrastructure (ring road areas), and nighttime lighting over 20 years in six major cities in China. We followed a longitudinal cohort of 4992 elderly participants (average age 87.8 years) over 16,824 person-years. We employed Cox proportional hazard regression to assess longevity, assessing 14 variables, including age, sex, ethnicity, marital status, residence, household income, occupation, education, smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise, and points of interest (POI) count of medicine-related facilities, sports, and leisure service-related places, and scenic spots within a 5 km-radius buffer. Findings: Geographic proximity to points of interest significantly improves survival. Elderly living in proximity of the POI-rich areas had a 34.6%–35.6% lower mortality risk compared to those in POI-poor areas, for the highest compared to the lowest quartile. However, POI-rich areas had higher air pollution levels, including PM2.5 and NO2, which was associated with a 21% and 10% increase in mortality risk for increase of 10 μg/m3, respectively. The benefits of urban living had higher effect estimates in monocentric cities, with clearly defined central areas, compared to polycentric layouts, with multiple satellite city centers. Interpretation: Spatial inequalities create urban health advantages for some and penalties for others. Proximity to public facilities and economic activities is associated with health benefits, and may counterbalance the negative health impacts of lower green space and higher air pollution. Our empirical evidence show optimal health gains for age-friendly urban environments come from a balance of infrastructure, points of interest, green spaces, and low air pollution. Enhancing oxidation resistance of multicomponent carbides above 2000 ℃ is critical for their thermal protection applications. For this purpose, novel Nb- and Ta-doped (Hf,Zr,Ti)C multicomponent carbides were designed to improve their oxidation resistance at 2500 ℃. The results demonstrated that Nb and Ta doping reduced the oxidation rate constant by 16.67% and 25.17%, respectively, thereby significantly improving the oxidation resistance of (Hf,Zr,Ti)C. This enhancement was attributed to the changes in oxycarbide composition and distribution within the oxide layer by adding Nb and Ta. Owing to the different oxidation tendencies of the constituent elements, a distinctive structure was formed in which (Hf,Zr)O2 served as a skeleton, and various oxycarbides were dispersed throughout the oxide layer. The doped Nb and Ta were retained within oxycarbides, retarding the diffusion of oxygen into the lattice. More importantly, the addition of Nb and Ta reduced the size of oxycarbides, decreasing both size and quantity of the pores in the oxide layer and facilitating the formation of a more effective oxygen barrier.

Abstract Background Medical diagnostics is a pivotal bridge curriculum that receives much less attention from undergraduates in non-clinical medicine health profession programs with less student engagement and poor performance. Mind mapping is an active learning strategy for graphically presenting radiant thinking to culture clinical reasoning. The purpose of this study was to explore whether students’ comprehensive diagnostic skills are enhanced through increased student engagement by employing mind mapping. Methods We implemented mind mapping in small-grouped workshops with 86 junior undergraduates from preventive medicine program, for physical diagnostic sessions including physical examination (PE) maneuver, electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation and medical history collection. We also conducted assessments of the above skills, as well as online surveys regarding their expectation on this course, self-evaluation of mind mapping in teaching and the learning process of all the modules. Results Group members employing mind mapping in all PE sessions obtained higher scores in the heart and lung systems during the PE maneuver exam. Similarly, groups that made more in-depth mind maps achieved higher scores on the ECG quiz. In addition, groups displaying mind maps for history taking from normal classes and reformed class exhibited greater completeness of medical history with both standardized patients and real patients, which was consistent with increased collection of accompanying symptoms. Mind mapping was valued by the majority of students for its benefits in terms of acquiring PE maneuver, theoretical knowledge, medical history collection and medical records writing, clinical reasoning, communication skills, sense of teamwork and cooperation, professionalism and humanistic literacy. Discussion The visual feature of mind mapping evoked extensive behavioral engagement in all groups, as did cognitive and emotional engagement, as the majority of students expressed their willingness and affective reactions. In the short term, the positive feedbacks encourage growing engagement. The continuous benefits of mind mapping require long-term observation.

Abstract We demonstrate a transcriptional regulatory design algorithm that can boost expression in yeast and mammalian cell lines. The system consists of a simplified transcriptional architecture composed of a minimal core promoter and a synthetic upstream regulatory region (sURS) composed of up to three motifs selected from a list of 41 motifs conserved in the eukaryotic lineage. The sURS system was first characterized using an oligo-library containing 189,990 variants. We validate the resultant expression model using a set of 43 unseen sURS designs. The validation sURS experiments indicate that a generic set of grammar rules for boosting and attenuation may exist in yeast cells. Finally, we demonstrate that this generic set of grammar rules functions similarly in mammalian CHO-K1 and HeLa cells. Consequently, our work provides a design algorithm for boosting the expression of promoters used for expressing industrially relevant proteins in yeast and mammalian cell lines.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common chronic degenerative joint disease in middle‐aged and elderly people, characterized by joint pain and dysfunction. Macrophages are key players in OA pathology, and their activation state has been studied extensively. Various studies have suggested that macrophages might respond to stimuli in their microenvironment by changing their phenotypes to pro‐inflammatory or anti‐inflammatory phenotypes, which is called macrophage polarization. Macrophages accumulate and become polarized (M1 or M2) in many tissues, such as synovium, adipose tissue, bone marrow, and bone mesenchymal tissues in joints, while resident macrophages as well as other stromal cells, including fibroblasts, chondrocytes, and osteoblasts, form the joint and function as an integrated unit. In this study, we focus exclusively on synovial macrophages, adipose tissue macrophages, and osteoclasts, to investigate their roles in the development of OA. We review recent key findings related to macrophage polarization and OA, including pathogenesis, molecular pathways, and therapeutics. We summarize several signaling pathways in macrophage reprogramming related to OA, including NF‐κB, MAPK, TGF‐β, JAK/STAT, PI3K/Akt/mTOR, and NLRP3. Of note, despite the increasing availability of treatments for osteoarthritis, like intra‐articular injections, surgery, and cellular therapy, the demand for more effective clinical therapies has remained steady. Therefore, we also describe the current prospective therapeutic methods that deem macrophage polarization to be a therapeutic target, including physical stimulus, chemical compounds, and biological molecules, to enhance cartilage repair and alleviate the progression of OA.

Abstract Soil contamination by uranium presents a burgeoning global environmental concern, exerting detrimental effects on both agricultural production and soil health. Biochar, a carbonaceous material derived from biomass pyrolysis, exhibits considerable potential for remediating uranium-contaminated soils. However, a comprehensive review of the effects of biochar on the fate and accumulation of uranium in soil–plant systems remains conspicuously absent. In this paper, uranium sources and contamination are reviewed, and the impact of biochar on uranium immobilization and detoxification in soil–plant systems is analyzed. We reviewed the status of uranium contamination in soils globally and found that mining activities are currently the main sources. Further meta-analysis revealed that biochar addition significantly reduced the soil uranium bioavailability and shoot uranium accumulation, and their effect value is 58.9% (40.8–76.8%) and 39.7% (15.7–63.8%), respectively. Additionally, biochar enhances the soil microenvironment, providing favourable conditions for promoting plant growth and reducing uranium mobility. We focused on the mechanisms governing the interaction between biochar and uranium, emphasising the considerable roles played by surface complexation, reduction, ion exchange, and physical adsorption. The modification of biochar by intensifying these mechanisms can promote uranium immobilisation in soils. Finally, biochar alleviates oxidative stress and reduces uranium accumulation in plant tissues, thereby mitigating the adverse effects of uranium on plant growth and development. Overall, our review highlights the capacity of biochar to remediate uranium contamination in soil–plant systems through diverse mechanisms, providing valuable insights for sustainable environmental remediation. Highlights Biochar reduces uranium mobility through a variety of mechanisms, including surface complexation, reduction, ion exchange, and physical adsorption. Biochar significantly reduces uranium bioavailability in soil and limits its accumulation in plants. Modified biochar has been shown to enhance its effectiveness in immobilising uranium. In recent years, high-entropy alloys (HEAs) have attracted tremendous attention in various fields. With multiple-principal elements and multiple core effects, giving them different organizational structures and unique properties compared with conventional alloys, providing unlimited development potential and bringing promising potential applications for HEAs. After almost 30 years of development, the preparation and research methods of HEAs have greatly expanded, the systems have been optimized, and their application scope has broadened. Here, we provided a comprehensive review of the development of the preparation processes firstly, including block, coating, wire, powder, and additively-manufactured HEAs. In addition, a series of findings on crucial properties of HEAs are also summarized, such as mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and oxidation resistance at high temperatures, as well as novel functional properties such as irradiation resistance, hydrogen storage, and biocompatibility, etc. Finally, existing shortcomings of HEAs as well as future trends and prospects are put forward.

Aluminum is the world's largest production of non-ferrous metals, with light weight, high specific strength, excellent electrical and thermal conductivity and other characteristics. With the continuous development of aerospace, precision electronic instruments, photovoltaic semiconductors and other emerging strategic industries, the demand for high-performance materials of aluminum alloys has become increasingly strong. This paper reviews the research progress of aluminum alloy melt refinement treatment, summarizes the development history of grain refinement, and evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of various types of refining agents, such as Al–Ti–B, Al–Ti–C, Al–Ti–B/C–Re, etc. The article points out the shortcomings of the current research on the melt refinement treatment of aluminum alloys, and looks forward to the future research direction.

Abstract This paper addresses how people understand Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) in three ways: contrastive, functional, and transparent. We discuss the unique aspects and challenges of each and emphasize improving current XAI understanding frameworks. The Ritual Dialog Framework (RDF) is introduced as a solution for better dialog between AI creators and users, blending anthropological insights with current acceptance challenges. RDF focuses on building trust and a user-centered approach in XAI. By undertaking such an initiative, we aim to foster a thorough Understanding of XAI, capable of resolving the current issues of acceptance and recognition.

Objective Recent evidence supports that leukocyte telomere length (LTL) may be positively associated with healthy living and inversely correlated with the risk of age‐related diseases, including osteoporosis. Furthermore, it is important to note that sex hormone‐binding globulin (SHBG) levels play a crucial role in the regulation of osteoporosis by influencing the availability of sex hormones. Hence, this study holds significant importance as it aims to unravel the roles of LTL and SHBG levels and determine which one acts as a predominant intermediary factor in influencing osteoporosis. Using Mendelian randomization (MR), we can gain valuable insights into the intricate relationships between aging, sex hormones, and bone health. Methods Univariable and multivariable and MR analyses were employed in this study. First, we used genetic variants associated with both LTL, as determined from a study involving 472,174 European participants by Codd et al., and SHBG levels, as identified in a study conducted by Ruth et al. with 370,125 participants, as instrumental variables (IVs). Then we aimed to establish a causal relationship between LTL and SHBG levels and their potential impact on osteoporosis using univariable MR. Finally, we conducted multivariable MR to provide insights into the independent and combined effects of LTL, SHBG levels on osteoporosis risk. We used various MR methods, with the primary analysis employing the inverse‐variance weighted (IVW) model. Results Univariable MR analysis reveals a potential causal effect of longer LTL on reduced risk of osteoporosis [odds ratio (OR): 0.85; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.73–0.99; p = 0.03]. Abstract As the two most principal active substances in the corn silk, polysaccharides and flavonoids, the mechanism of interaction between them has been a topic of intense research. This study provides an in-depth investigation of the interaction mechanism between corn silk glycans and luteoloside (LUT) and the synergistic role that result from this interaction. The interaction mechanism was evaluated by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and circular dichroism (CD), and the synergistic role was evaluated by the expression of glucose transporters (GLUT-1), insulin secretion and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). CD and ITC results indicated that the interaction between CSGs and LUT mainly driven by the Cotton effects, enthalpy and entropy-driven. This interaction precipitated the formation of complexes (CSGs/LUT complexes) between corn silk glycans (CSGs) with four different molecular weights and luteoloside (LUT). Furthermore, the CSGs and LUT play a synergistic role in glucose regulation through GLUT-1 expression and insulin secretion experiments, compared to single luteoloside group. Graphical Abstract

[Objective] Due to the constraints of surface implementation conditions and underground space limitations, the implementation of underground utility tunnel in central urban area has poor feasibility. To address this issue, the concept of integrating the utility tunnel with metro system is proposed to achieve synchronized planning, design, and implementation, and to explore different modes of integrated utility tunnel and metro joint construction. [Method] The necessity and principles of utility tunnel and metro joint construction are studied, and the integrated construction of both is analyzed. Taking the joint construction project of Guangzhou central urban underground utility tunnel engineering and Guangzhou Metro Line 11 as example, the characteristics and applicability of different integration modes are analyzed from the perspective of land saving, construction difficulties, and coordination requirements. The applicability of joint construction modes is discussed based on typical cases and their practical implications. [Result & Conclusion] Integrating utility tunnel with metro system through synchronized planning, design and implementation can reduce land resource occupation and reasonably utilize underground space resources. Co-construction and co-structure are the preferred utility tunnel and metro joint construction modes, saving construction costs significantly and leveraging the benefits of joint construction to the maximum degree. The final determination of the integration scheme between the utility tunnel (shaft) and the main and ancillary structures of metro should be tailored to context-specific and comprehensive consideration based on actual site conditions.

The study examines the corrosion behavior of the (NdSmEuGd)(1-x)/2Dy2xZr2O7 series in 1300 °C molten salt CMAS, demonstrating that the dense layer formed by ZrO2 and apatite could effectively inhibit the penetration of CMAS. Smaller rare-earth ion radii tend to form larger-sized ZrO2, while larger rare-earth ion radii favor apatite formation. Therefore, by carefully balancing the rare earth ion radii in the composition design of high-entropy samples, the levels of ZrO2 and apatite formation can be adjusted to prevent CMAS infiltration. This approach helps identify high-entropy zirconate samples with superior corrosion resistance to CMAS.

The stigma of nursing students towards people with mental illness (PMI) creates significant barriers to diagnosis, treatment, and recovery for those with PMI. It can also have a significant impact on the future career choices of nursing students in the field of psychiatry. Current research has found various influencing factors, including personal characteristics and educational influences. However, a comprehensive analysis that encompasses all aspects is lacking. The aim of the study was to conduct a convergent mixed‐method systematic review to synthesize the influencing factors of the stigma of nursing students towards PMI according to Framework Integrating Normative Influences on Stigma (FINIS) at micro, meso, and macro levels. PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, CINAHL and PsycINFO were searched from 1990 to 31 December 2023. The reference lists of the included literature were further checked to identify potentially relevant articles. Two authors independently screened all titles, abstracts, and full-text articles and extracted data. Study quality was assessed by two authors using the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool (MMAT). A total of 4865 articles were initially retrieved, and 73 of these articles were included. The results suggested that the stigma towards PMI by nursing students was influenced by micro, meso and macro levels. At each FINIS level, the most frequent influencing factors are personal characteristics, the treatment system and media images. Numerous interconnected factors exert an influence on the stigma towards PMI among nursing students. Our research can be used to identify barriers and facilitators to nursing students’ stigma towards PMI and to provide supporting information for interventions designed to reduce this stigma.

AbstractBackground Cuproptosis, a type of cell death involving copper ion accumulation and oxidative stress, has been implicated in the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).Aim This study aimed to explore the potential mechanisms and roles of cuproptosis-related genes (CRGs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and immune cells in the development of cuproptosis in AD.Subjects and methods Gene expression profiles of AD were acquired from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, and differential analysis was conducted to identify CRGs. Random Forest (RF) modelling was employed to select the most crucial CRGs, which were subsequently validated in the test set. A nomogram model was created to predict AD risk and categorise AD subtypes based on the identified CRGs. A lncRNA-related ceRNA network was built, and immune cell infiltration analysis was conducted.Results Twelve differentially expressed CRGs were identified in the AD dataset. The RF model pinpointed the five most critical CRGs, which were validated in the test set with an AUC of 0.90. A lncRNA-related ceRNA network was developed, and immune cell infiltration analysis revealed high levels of M1 macrophages and mast cells, along with low levels of memory B cells in AD samples. Correlation analysis unveiled associations between CRGs, lncRNAs, and differentially infiltrating immune cells.Conclusion This research offers insights into the potential mechanisms and roles of CRGs, lncRNAs, and immune cells in the development of cuproptosis in AD. The identified CRGs and lncRNAs may serve as potential therapeutic targets for AD, and the nomogram model may assist in early AD diagnosis and subtyping.

The concept of passenger-centric design has become increasingly significant in the intelligent automotive industry. Enhancing in-cabin thermal comfort while maintaining energy efficiency is crucial, and to this end, we leverage real-time passenger thermal sensation as a basis for HVAC control strategies. This study introduces a non-invasive, dual-phase prediction model that evaluates passenger thermal comfort by utilizing facial thermal imaging and environmental factors. The proposed model employs a deep learning neural network to extract pertinent features from the facial thermal images for an initial prediction. Then this prediction is refined by integrating it with environmental data through a machine learning algorithm, facilitating real-time personal thermal comfort assessment. Data collection for the model was performed across two distinct seasons, with 22 participants in summer and 18 in winter, gathering facial thermal images, environmental parameters, and thermal sensation votes to construct a comprehensive dataset. Analysis revealed a set of critical environmental factors that correlate strongly with thermal sensation votes, which were used as auxiliary features in the model. The performance of the proposed dual-phase approach, combining deep learning and machine learning techniques, demonstrated robust effectiveness on both summer and winter datasets. This substantiates the method's practicality for real-world application within vehicle environments.

Abstract Advancing fast‐charging technology is an important strategy for the development of alkali metal ion batteries (AMIBs). The exploitation of a new generation of anode material system with high‐rate performance, high capacity, and low risk of lithium/sodium/potassium plating is critical to realize fast‐charging capability of AMIBs while maintaining high energy density and safety. Among them, phosphorus‐based anodes including phosphorus anodes and metal phosphide anodes have attracted wide attention, due to their high theoretical capacities, safe reaction voltages, and natural abundance. In this review, we summarize the research progress of different phosphorus‐based anodes for fast‐charging AMIBs, including material properties, mechanisms for storing alkali metal ions, key challenges and solution strategies for achieving fast‐charging capability. Moreover, the future development directions of phosphorus‐based anodes in fast‐charging AMIBs are highlighted.

Long-term exposure to urban dust containing potentially toxic elements (PTEs) poses detrimental impacts on human health. However, studies estimating human health risks in urban dusts from a global perspective are scarce. We evaluated data for twelve PTEs in urban dusts across 59 countries from 463 published articles, including their concentrations, input sources, and probabilistic risks to human health. We found that 34.1 and 60.3% of those investigated urban dusts have been heavily contaminated with As and Cd, respectively. The input of PTEs was significantly correlated with economic structure due to emissions of industrial activities and traffic emissions being the major sources. Based on the Monte Carlo simulation, we found that the mean hazard index below the safe threshold (1.0) could still cause non-negligible risks to human health. Arsenic and Cr were the major PTEs threatening human health, and relatively high risk levels were observed in cities in China, Korea, Chile, Malaysia, and Australia. Importantly, our analysis suggested that PTEs threaten the health of approximately 92 million adults and 280 million children worldwide. Overall, our study provides important foundational understanding and guidance for policy decision-making to reduce the potential risks associated with PTE exposure and to promote sustainable development of urban economies.

ABSTRACTStaphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a leading cause of bacteremia and blood stream infections. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) that first appeared in 1961 often caused hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and community-acquired infections (CAIs) and was associated with high mortality rate. Accurate and rapid point-of-care testing (POCT) of MRSA is crucial for clinical management and treatment of MRSA infections, as well as the prevention and control of HAIs and CAIs. Here, we reported a novel extraction-free dual HiFi-LAMP assay for discriminative detection of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus and MRSA. The dual HiFi-LAMP assay can detect 30 copies/reaction of nuc and mecA genes with detection limits of 147 and 158 copies per 25 µL reaction, respectively. A retrospective clinical evaluation with 107 clinical S. aureus isolates showed both sensitivity and specificity of 100%. A prospective clinical evaluation with 35 clinical samples revealed a specificity of 100% and a sensitivity of 92.3%. The dual HiFi-LAMP assay can detect almost all S. aureus samples (141/142; 99.3%) within 20 min, implying that the entire HiFi-LAMP assay (including sample process) can be completed within 40 min, extremely significantly shorter than 3–5 days by the traditional clinical microbial culture and antibiotic susceptibility testing. The novel extraction-free dual HiFi-LAMP assay can be used as a robust POCT tool to promote precise diagnosis and treatment of MRSA infections in hospitals and to facilitate surveillance of MRSA at hospital and community settings.IMPORTANCEMethicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was associated with high mortality rate and listed as a “priority pathogen” by the World Health Organization. Accurate and rapid point-of-care testing (POCT) of MRSA is critically required for clinical management and treatment of MRSA infections. Some previous LAMP-based POCT assays for MRSA might be questionable due to their low specificity and the lack of appropriate evaluation directly using clinical samples. Furthermore, they are relatively tedious and time-consuming because they require DNA extraction and lack multiplex detection capacity. Here, we reported a novel extraction-free dual HiFi-LAMP assay for discriminative detection of MRSA and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus. The assay has high specificity and sensitivity and can be completed within 40 min. Clinical evaluation with real clinical samples and clinical isolates showed excellent performance with 100% specificity and 92.3%–100% sensitivity. The novel extraction-free assay may be a robust POCT tool to promote precise diagnosis of MRSA infections and facilitate surveillance of MRSA at hospital and community settings.

Hf-based carbides are highly desirable candidate materials for oxidizing environments above 2000 ​°C. However, the static oxidation behavior at their potential service temperatures remains unclear. To fill this gap, the static oxidation behavior of (Hf, Ti)C and the effect of Ti substitutions were investigated in air at 2500 ​°C under an oxygen partial pressure of 4.2 ​kPa. After oxidation for 2000 ​s, the thickness of the oxide layer on the surface of (Hf, Ti)C bulk ceramic is reduced by 62.29 ​% compared with that on the HfC monocarbide surface. The dramatic improvement in oxidation resistance is attributed to the unique oxide layer structure consisting of various crystalline oxycarbides, HfO2, and carbon. The Ti-rich oxycarbide ((Ti, Hf)CxOy) dispersed within HfO2 formed the major structure of the oxide layer. A coherent boundary with lattice distortion existed at the HfO2/(Ti, Hf)CxOy interface along the (111) crystal plane direction, which served as an effective oxygen diffusion barrier. The Hf-rich oxycarbide ((Hf, Ti)CxOy) together with (Ti, Hf)CxOy, HfO2, and precipitated carbon constituted a dense transition layer, ensuring favorable bonding between the oxide layer and the matrix. The Ti content affects the oxidation resistance of (Hf, Ti)C by determining the oxide layer's phase distribution and integrity.

Objective Prior observational studies have reported that levels of sex hormones constitute a risk factor for the fracture. The aim of this study was to ascertain whether there is a causal relationship between the levels of sex hormones and the risk of fracture through Mendelian randomization (MR). Methods Single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with two indicators of sex hormone levels, circulating sex hormone‐binding globulin (SHBG) and bioavailable testosterone levels, as exposures were selected from a large genome‐wide association study (GWAS) from UK Biobank. The summary statistics for 11 different types of fracture as outcomes from the FinnGen consortium. This study employed the two‐sample MR approach. For the main analysis, the inverse‐variance‐weighted (IVW) method was utilized. To assess the heterogeneity of MR results, the IVW method and MR–Egger method were utilized. To evaluate potential pleiotropy, MR–Egger regression was conducted. Additionally, a leave‐one‐SNP‐out test was performed to assess the robustness of MR results to the exclusion of any individual SNP. Results The MR analyses demonstrated a conspicuous impact of SHBG on the risk of pathological fracture with osteoporosis (OP). We found that an increase of one standard deviation (SD) in SHBG correspondingly increased the risk of pathological fracture with OP [odds ratio (OR) 2.42, 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.52–3.85; p = 1.93 × 10−4]. The bioavailable testosterone showed the negative casual genetic associations with fractures of foot and forearm. An increase of one SD in the genetically predetermined bioavailable testosterone was associated with a reduction of 37% in the risk of fracture of foot (OR 0.63, 95% Cl 0.49 to 0.81; p = 3.37 × 10−4), as well as a 39% decrease in the risk of fracture of forearm (OR 0.61, 95% Cl 0.50 to 0.76; p = 5.40 × 10−6). Conclusions Our study confirms that individuals experiencing elevated SHBG concentrations showed a major causal effect on pathological fracture with OP. High bioavailable testosterone levels play an important role in preventing the fractures of foot and forearm. Although increasing bioavailable testosterone and decreasing SHBG levels had no casual effect on most fractures in the general population, they are likely to have the most clinically relevant effect on certain fracture risk reduction.

Abstract Bone regeneration for large, critical-sized bone defects remains a clinical challenge nowadays. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is a promising technique for the repair of multiple bone defects, which is widely used in oral and maxillofacial bone defects but is still unsatisfied in the treatment of long bone defects. Here, we successfully fabricated a bilayer mineralized collagen/collagen (MC/Col)-GBR membrane with excellent osteoinductive and barrier function by coating the MC particles prepared via in situ biomimetic mineralization process on one side of a sheet-like pure collagen layer. The aim of the present study was to investigate the physicochemical properties and biological functions of the MC/Col film, and to further evaluate its bone regeneration efficiency in large bone defect repair. Fourier-transform infrared spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the presence of both hydroxyapatite and collagen phase in the MC/Col film, as well as the chemical interaction between them. stereo microscope, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscope showed the uniform distribution of MC particles in the MC/Col film, resulting in a rougher surface compared to the pure Col film. The quantitative analysis of surface contact angle, light transmittance and tensile strength demonstrated that the MC/Col film have better hydrophilicity, mechanical properties, light-barrier properties, respectively. In vitro macrophage co-culture experiments showed that the MC/Col film can effectively inhibit macrophage proliferation and fusion, reducing fibrous capsule formation. In vivo bone repair assessment of a rabbit critical segmental radial defect proved that the MC/Col film performed better than other groups in promoting bone repair and regeneration due to their unique dual osteoinductive/barrier function. These findings provided evidence that MC/Col film has a great clinical potential for effective bone defect repair. Graphic abstract

The construction of super-large tunnels generates various safety risks that can hamper the tunneling process and cause severe damages if not properly identified. This paper presents a case study on the identification and management of geological and environmental risks during the construction of the largest (a diameter of 15.8 m) slurry shield tunnel in China. Its ground conditions and settlement control were identified among the most challenging owing to a large area of mixed ground conditions, 11 fault zones and tunneling under residential areas and the city’s Metro Lines 1 and 9. In response to the severity of these risks and challenges, novel monitoring systems, ground treatment, and safety management technologies were successfully implemented throughout the tunneling process. Further, a technical framework was proposed in this study to serve as a risk management guidance for analogous tunneling operations.

Abstract Objective Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including regular physical activity, is widely believed to decrease cancer risk. This study aimed to quantitatively establish the dose‐response relationships between total physical activity and the risk of breast, colon, lung, gastric, and liver cancers. Methods A systematic review and dose‐response analysis were conducted using PubMed and Embase from January 1, 1980 to March 20, 2023. Prospective cohort studies that examined the association between physical activity and the risks of any of the 5 outcomes were included. The search was confined to publications in the English language with a specific focus on human studies. Physical activity is standardized by using the data from US National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) and the Global Burden of Disease 2019 database. Results A total of 98 studies, involving a combined population of 16,418,361 individuals, were included in the analysis. Among the included studies, 57 focused on breast cancer, 17 on lung cancer, 23 on colon cancer, 5 on gastric cancer, and 7 on liver cancer. Overall, elevated levels of physical activity exhibited an inverse correlation with the risk of cancer. The dose‐response curve for lung cancer exhibited a non‐linear pattern, with the greatest benefit risk reduction observed at 13,200 MET‐minutes/week of physical activity, resulting in a 14.7% reduction in risk (relative risk 0.853, uncertainty interval 0.798 to 0.912) compared to the inactive population. In contrast, the dose‐response curves for colon, gastric, breast, and liver cancers showed linear associations, indicating that heightened levels of total physical activity were consistently associated with reduced cancer risks. However, the increase in physical activity yielded a smaller risk reduction for colon and gastric cancers compared to breast and liver cancers. Compared to individuals with insufficient activity (total activity level < 600 MET‐minutes/week), individuals with high levels of activity (≥ 8,000 MET‐minutes/week) experienced a 10.3% (0.897, 0.860 to 0.934) risk reduction for breast cancer; 5.9% (0.941, 0.884 to 1.001) for lung cancer; 7.1% (0.929, 0.909 to 0.949) for colon cancer; 5.1% (0.949, 0.908 to 0.992) for gastric cancer; 17.1% (0.829, 0.760 to 0.903) for liver cancer. Conclusions This study demonstrated a significant inverse relationship between total physical activity and the risk of breast, gastric, liver, colon, and lung cancers.

Objective In numerous observational studies, there has been an indication that educational attainment (EA) can impact the intensity of pain and disability resulting from chronic musculoskeletal disorders. Nonetheless, the association observed in these studies is not entirely conclusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic causal relationship between educational attainment and 12 musculoskeletal disorders using Mendelian randomization (MR). Methods The meta‐analysis of genome‐wide association studies (GWAS) identified 3952 single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with educational attainment (EA) from the Social Science Genetic Association Consortium (SSGAC). Genetic data for 12 musculoskeletal disorders, including osteonecrosis, osteoporosis, osteomyelitis, low back pain, gout, spinal stenosis, rheumatoid arthritis, meniscus derangement, rotator cuff syndrome, ankylosing spondylitis, cervicobrachial syndrome, and lateral epicondylitis, were obtained from the FinnGen consortium. We conducted a two‐sample Mendelian randomization analysis to examine the causal effect of EA on the risk of these musculoskeletal disorders using the TwoSampleMR package in R. Multicomponent boron-containing carbide coatings (i.e., (Zr,Ti)CxBy) on a C/C composite show good ablation resistance. However, the high-temperature oxidation behavior of this new type of boron-containing (Zr,Ti)CxBy solid solution ceramics has not been clarified yet. The present work fabricated (Zr,Ti)CxBy solid solution block ceramics by spark plasma sintering, and their oxidation behavior at 1600 ℃ in air (N2–20-vol% O2) was investigated for the first time. The effects of boron on the oxidation resistance of (Zr,Ti)CxBy ceramics were examined. The results indicate that the (Zr,Ti)CxBy ceramics display good oxidation resistance with the parabolic rate law describing the oxidation process. After the trace solution of boron (0.5 wt%) into (Zr,Ti)Cx, the oxidation resistance of carbide ceramics is significantly enhanced, leading to a decrease of 30% in the oxidation rate constant. The formed oxide scale in the (Zr,Ti)CxBy ceramics is dense, and the interlayer shows stronger ability to inhibit inward diffusion of oxygen. In addition, the introduction of boron leads to more negative binding energy of (Zr,Ti)CxBy and improves the oxidation resistance of carbides.

Abstract Background Proteins containing the Jumonji C (JmjC) domain participated in tumorigenesis and cancer progression. However, the mechanisms underlying this effect are still poorly understood. Our objective was to investigate the role of Jumonji and the AT‐rich interaction domain‐containing 2 (JARID2) — a JmjC family protein — in breast cancer, as well as its latent association with obesity. Methods Immunohistochemistry, The Cancer Genome Atlas, Gene Expression Omnibus, and other databases were used to analyze the expression of JARID2 in breast cancer cells. Growth curve, 5‐ethynyl‐2‐deoxyuridine (EdU), colony formation, and cell invasion experiments were used to detect whether JARID2 affected breast cancer cell proliferation and invasion. Spheroidization‐based experiments and xenotumor transplantation in NOD/SCID mice were used to examine the association between JARID2 and breast cancer stemness. RNA‐sequencing, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes, and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis were used to identify the cell processes in which JARID2 participates. Immunoaffinity purification and silver staining mass spectrometry were conducted to search for proteins that might interact with JARID2. The results were further verified using co‐immunoprecipitation and glutathione S‐transferase (GST) pull‐down experiments. Using chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) sequencing, we sought the target genes that JARID2 and metastasis‐associated protein 1 (MTA1) jointly regulated; the results were validated by ChIP‐PCR, quantitative ChIP (qChIP) and ChIP‐reChIP assays. A coculture experiment was used to explore the interactions between breast cancer cells and adipocytes. Results In this study, we found that JARID2 was highly expressed in multiple types of cancer including breast cancer. JARID2 promoted glycolysis, lipid metabolism, proliferation, invasion, and stemness of breast cancer cells. Furthermore, JARID2 physically interacted with the nucleosome remodeling and deacetylase (NuRD) complex, transcriptionally repressing a series of tumor suppressor genes such as BRCA2 DNA repair associated (BRCA2), RB transcriptional corepressor 1 (RB1), and inositol polyphosphate‐4‐phosphatase type II B (INPP4B). Additionally, JARID2 expression was regulated by the obesity‐associated adipokine leptin via Janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (JAK2/STAT3) pathway in the breast cancer microenvironment. Analysis of various online databases also indicated that JARID2/MTA1 was associated with a poor prognosis of breast cancer. Conclusion Our data indicated that JARID2 promoted breast tumorigenesis and development, confirming JARID2 as a target for cancer treatment.

Abstract The architecture design and multi-scale learning principles of the human brain that evolved over hundreds of millions of years are crucial to realizing human-like intelligence. Spiking neural network based Liquid State Machine (LSM) serves as a suitable architecture to study brain-inspired intelligence because of its brain-inspired structure and the potential for integrating multiple biological principles. Existing researches on LSM focus on different certain perspectives, including high-dimensional encoding or optimization of the liquid layer, network architecture search, and application to hardware devices. There is still a lack of in-depth inspiration from the learning and structural evolution mechanism of the brain. Considering these limitations, this paper presents a novel LSM learning model that integrates adaptive structural evolution and multi-scale biological learning rules. For structural evolution, an adaptive evolvable LSM model is developed to optimize the neural architecture design of liquid layer with separation property. For brain-inspired learning of LSM, we propose a dopamine-modulated Bienenstock-Cooper-Munros (DA-BCM) method that incorporates global long-term dopamine regulation and local trace-based BCM synaptic plasticity. Comparative experimental results on different decision-making tasks show that introducing structural evolution of the liquid layer, and the DA-BCM regulation of the liquid layer and the readout layer could improve the decision-making ability of LSM and flexibly adapt to rule reversal. This work is committed to exploring how evolution can help to design more appropriate network architectures and how multi-scale neuroplasticity principles coordinated to enable the optimization and learning of LSMs for relatively complex decision-making tasks.

Abstract Humans often unconsciously perceive social robots involved in their lives as partners rather than mere tools, imbuing them with qualities of companionship. This anthropomorphization can lead to a spectrum of emotional risks, such as deception, disappointment, and reverse manipulation, that existing approaches struggle to address effectively. In this paper, we argue that a Virtual Interactive Environment (VIE) exists between humans and social robots, which plays a crucial role and demands necessary consideration and clarification in order to mitigate potential emotional risks. By analyzing the relational nature of human-social robot interaction, we discuss the connotation of such a virtual interactive environment that is similar to the emotional states aroused when reading novels. Building on this comprehension, we further demonstrate that manufacturers should carry out comprehensive Virtual Interactive Environment Indication (VIEI) measures during human-social robot interaction with a stricter sense of responsibility when applying social robots. Finally, we contemplate the potential contributions of virtual interactive environment indication to existing robot ethics guidelines.

Cenchrus fungigraminus is a new species and is largely used as forage and mushroom substrate. However, it can usually not be planted on farmland on account of local agricultural land policy. Interplanting Cenchrus fungigraminus with other crops annually (short-term) is an innovative strategy to promote the sustainable development of the grass industry in southern China. To further investigate this, C. fungigraminus mono-planting (MC), C. fungigraminus–potato interplanting (CIP) and C. fungigraminus–broad bean interplanting (CIB) were performed. Compared to MC, soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC), soil organic matter (SOM), ammoniacal nitrogen (AMN), pH and soil amino sugars had a positive effect on the rhizosphere soil of CIP and CIB, as well as enhancing soil nitrogenase, nitrite reductase, and peroxidase activities (p < 0.05). Moreover, CIP improved the root vitality (2.08 times) and crude protein (1.11 times). In addition, CIB enhanced the crude fiber of C. fungigraminus seedlings. These two interplanting models also improved the microbial composition and diversity (Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidota, etc.) in the rhizosphere soil of C. fungigraminus seedlings. Among all the samples, 189 and 59 genes were involved in methane cycling and nitrogen cycling, respectively, which improved the presence of the serine cycle, ribulose monophosphate, assimilatory nitrate reduction, methane absorption, and glutamate synthesis and inhibited denitrification. Through correlation analysis and the Mantel test, the putative functional genes, encoding functions in both nitrogen and methane cycling, were shown to have a significant positive effect on pH, moisture, AMN, SOM, SMBC, and soil peroxidase activity, while not displaying a significant effect on soil nitrogenase activity and total amino sugar (p < 0.05). The short-term influence of the interplanting model was shown to improve land use efficiency and economic profitability per unit land area, and the models could provide sustainable agricultural production for rural revitalization.

The urea oxidation reaction (UOR), requiring less energy to produce hydrogen, is considered as a potential alternative to the traditional oxygen evolution reaction. Consequently, developing highly efficient UOR catalysts to facilitate H2 production has garnered widespread attention. A promising approach to enhancing the effectiveness of these electrocatalysts is defect engineering. By introducing structural defects, defect engineering can expose more active sites and optimize their electronic structure, thereby improving their activity. This work offers a comprehensive overview of recent progress in defect engineering of nickel-based electrocatalysts for the UOR. It summarizes various strategies for generating defects, including the creation of vacancies, doping, the incorporation of single atoms, amorphization, and achieving high refractivity. Furthermore, we discuss the advanced characterization techniques commonly used to identify the presence of defects in these electrocatalysts, as well as to determine their detailed structures. Finally, we outline the prospects and challenges associated with the systematic design and fabrication of novel UOR electrocatalysts with tunable defects, aiming to further enhance their efficiency and stability.

Postpartum women present a high risk of disordered eating behaviors, but the heterogeneity between groups was not identified. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify eating styles profiles in postpartum women and explore the correlates based on demographic characteristics and psychosocial factors. Questionnaires were administered to 507 Chinese postpartum women. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was conducted to identify eating styles profiles. Multinomial logistic regression was used to investigate the correlates of these profiles among postpartum women. The LPA identified three eating styles profiles: postpartum women with low emotional, external, and restrained eating (Profile 1, 6.9%); postpartum women with medium emotional, external, and restrained eating (Profile 2, 66.1%); and postpartum women with high emotional, external, and restrained eating (Profile 3, 27.0%). Compared to Profile 1, higher postpartum depression (PPD) and body mass index (BMI) were more likely to be associated with Profile 2 and Profile 3, whereas higher postpartum weight retention (PPWR) was more likely to be associated with Profile 1. Compared to Profile 2, higher PPD and BMI were more likely associated with Profile 3. Disordered eating behaviors in postpartum women with three eating styles were associated with BMI, PPD, and PPWR. This study can guide healthcare professionals in developing targeted interventions to improve maternal and child health globally.

Abstract Background Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related Tauopathies are characterised by the pathologically hyperphosphorylated and aggregated microtubule‐associated protein Tau, which is accompanied by neuroinflammation mediated by activated microglia. However, the role of Tau pathology in microglia activation or their causal relationship remains largely elusive. Methods The levels of nucleotide‐binding oligomerisation domain (NOD)‐like receptor pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) acetylation and inflammasome activation in multiple cell models with Tau proteins treatment, transgenic mice with Tauopathy, and AD patients were measured by Western blotting and enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. In addition, the acetyltransferase activity of Tau and NLRP3 acetylation sites were confirmed using the test‐tube acetylation assay, co‐immunoprecipitation, immunofluorescence (IF) staining, mass spectrometry and molecular docking. The Tau‐overexpressing mouse model was established by overexpression of human Tau proteins in mouse hippocampal CA1 neurons through the adeno‐associated virus injection. The cognitive functions of Tau‐overexpressing mice were assessed in various behavioural tests, and microglia activation was analysed by Iba‐1 IF staining and [18F]‐DPA‐714 positron emission tomography/computed tomography imaging. A peptide that blocks the interaction between Tau and NLRP3 was synthesised to determine the in vitro and in vivo effects of Tau–NLRP3 interaction blockade on NLRP3 acetylation, inflammasome activation, microglia activation and cognitive function. Results Excessively elevated NLRP3 acetylation and inflammasome activation were observed in 3xTg‐AD mice, microtubule‐associated protein Tau P301S (PS19) mice and AD patients. It was further confirmed that mimics of ‘early’ phosphorylated‐Tau proteins which increase at the initial stage of diseases with Tauopathy, including TauT181E, TauS199E, TauT217E and TauS262E, significantly promoted Tau–K18 domain acetyltransferase activity‐dependent NLRP3 acetylation and inflammasome activation in HEK293T and BV‐2 microglial cells. In addition, Tau protein could directly acetylate NLRP3 at the K21, K22 and K24 sites at its PYD domain and thereby induce inflammasome activation in vitro. Overexpression of human Tau proteins in mouse hippocampal CA1 neurons resulted in impaired cognitive function, Tau transmission to microglia and microgliosis with NLRP3 acetylation and inflammasome activation. As a targeted intervention, competitive binding of a designed Tau–NLRP3‐binding blocking (TNB) peptide to block the interaction of Tau protein with NLRP3 inhibited the NLRP3 acetylation and downstream inflammasome activation in microglia, thereby alleviating microglia activation and cognitive impairment in mice. Conclusions In conclusion, our findings provide evidence for a novel role of Tau in the regulation of microglia activation through acetylating NLRP3, which has potential implications for early intervention and personalised treatment of AD and related Tauopathies.

Objective To evaluate the effect of the uncertainty training on improvement of students’ diagnostic ability. Methods Data were collected on 70 fifth-year medical students enrolled in the Case Discussion courses on Obstetrics and Gynecology in the spring of 2020. Of these students, 36 were in the uncertainty training group and 34 in the control group. The effect of training was evaluated by cognitively diagnostic assessment which mapped exam questions to 4 attributes assessing clinical reasoning and basic science knowledge. Results Uncertainty training was able to improve students’ ability to use basic science concepts for inference and problem solving, and the ability to integrate complex clinical information to arrive at a diagnosis. But it could not improve students’ ability on the basic recall of foundational concepts and the ability to use basic science concepts in clinical reasoning. Medical students could do well in integrating complex clinical information although they didn’t recall basic science knowledge well. Conclusion Uncertainty training could be used as an effective teaching method in Case Discussion course on Obstetrics and Gynecology. However, students still need to improve their basic knowledge besides the training.
