Peri-urban landscapes are urban-rural interfaces that experience challenges due to dynamic urbanisation and climate change effects. These landscapes are also characterized by overlapping jurisdictions, blurred boundaries, and regulatory slippage, leading to diverse and fragmented interactions of governance actors. This is particularly important in the context of peri-urban lake ecosystems, where conflicting goals between governance actors (state to civil society) often result in socio-ecological transformations of lakes. While existing governance studies provide knowledge on actor interactions in urban areas, there is a need to understand interactions between actors in the peri-urban context. To address this gap, we conduct a systematic review to conceptualize governance interactions between actors concerning the governance of peri-urban lake ecosystems. We identify four dominant discourses and their characteristics that may shape forms of lake ecosystem governance. In doing so, we draw insights from the literature review and present a graphical model to illustrate governance actor interactions, contributing to the transformation of lake ecosystems across spatial and temporal dimensions.

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) has been the focus of numerous studies examining the energy and water cycle variations, but there is still a lack of long-term, quantitative precise assessments of evapotranspiration. This research first provided two sets of long-term comprehensive observational datasets, and an advanced monitoring technique to measure soil moisture, which can improve the estimation accuracy of evapotranspiration. Subsequently, using microwave data, the Surface Energy Balance System model and Machine Learning methods, it calculated a complete set of long-term evapotranspiration data. At the same time, based on reasonable assumptions, it also estimated the total evaporation from plateau lakes. These findings contribute significantly to the understanding of the relationship between the Asian monsoon, the TP’s physical characteristics, and its atmosphere, thereby improving predictions of water resource variability in the TP. The study’s innovative methodologies and synthesis of diverse data sources provide critical information for informed and sustainable water management strategies in the region.

To effectively develop strategies that address the escalating surface temperatures of cities in diverse landscape characters, various and sometimes contradicting drivers are presented in the literature. A synthesis of findings and observations in this aspect is lacking. Therefore, the main tenet of our study was to identify robust landscape metrics (LMs) that drive the dynamics of urban land surface temperature (ULST) and analyse the extent to which landscape character influences their impact. We adopted a systematic literature review protocol, augmented with different geospatial datasets (at a global scale) and applied mixed approaches for our review and analyses. A total of 101 relevant articles were identified, although skewed towards Asia; various methods were utilised in analysing the LMs – ULST relationship; about 432 unique LMs were revealed with only 11 % of these confirmed to be robust. Landscape character elements are found to exert a slight to moderate significant influence on the LMs − ULST relationship reported in the literature. This further strengthened our proposition of the need to consider landscape character elements in understanding the dynamics of ULST in different environments. To this end, we developed an interactive scheme to synthesize our findings which reveal robust LMs in diverse landscape characters. Our FAIRly-open study serves as a call to the scientific community and urban stakeholders to engage and interact with our findings as this may help rethink (current) ULST mitigation strategies. Also, combining our scheme with expert and local spatial knowledge of stakeholders can offer a practical foundation for addressing ULSTs across diverse landscapes.

Abstract Although soil moisture is a key factor of hydrologic and climate applications, global continuous high resolution soil moisture datasets are still limited. Here we use physics-informed machine learning to generate a global, long-term, spatially continuous high resolution dataset of surface soil moisture, using International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN), remote sensing and meteorological data, guided with the knowledge of physical processes impacting soil moisture dynamics. Global Surface Soil Moisture (GSSM1 km) provides surface soil moisture (0–5 cm) at 1 km spatial and daily temporal resolution over the period 2000–2020. The performance of the GSSM1 km dataset is evaluated with testing and validation datasets, and via inter-comparisons with existing soil moisture products. The root mean square error of GSSM1 km in testing set is 0.05 cm3/cm3, and correlation coefficient is 0.9. In terms of the feature importance, Antecedent Precipitation Evaporation Index (APEI) is the most important significant predictor among 18 predictors, followed by evaporation and longitude. GSSM1 km product can support the investigation of large-scale climate extremes and long-term trend analysis.

The freezing front depth (zff) of annual freeze–thaw cycles is critical for monitoring the dynamics of the cryosphere under climate change because zff is a sensitive indicator of the heat balance over the atmosphere-cryosphere interface. Meanwhile, although it is very promising for acquiring global soil moisture distribution, the L-band microwave remote sensing products over seasonally frozen grounds and permafrost is much less than in wet soil. This study develops an algorithm, i.e., the brightness temperature inferred freezing front (BT-FF) model, for retrieving the interannual zff with the diurnal amplitude variation of L-band brightness temperature (ΔTB) during the freezing period. The new algorithm assumes first, the daily-scale solar radiation heating/cooling effect causes the daily surface thawing depth (ztf) variation, which leads further to ΔTB; second, ΔTB can be captured by an L-band radiometer; third, ztf and zff are negatively linear correlated and their relation can be quantified using the Stefan equation. In this study, the modeled soil temperature profiles from the land surface model (STEMMUS-FT, i.e., simultaneous transfer of energy, mass, and momentum in unsaturated soil with freeze and thaw) and TB observations from a tower-based L-band radiometer (ELBARA-III) at Maqu are used to validate the BT-FF model. It shows that, first, ΔTB can be precisely estimated from ztf during the daytime; second, the decreasing of ztf is linearly related to the increase of zff with the Stefan equation; third, the accuracy of retrieved zff is about 5–25 cm; fourth, the proposed model is applicable during the freezing period. The study is expected to extend the application of L-band TB data in cryosphere/meteorology and construct global freezing depth dataset in the future.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission has been validating its soil moisture (SM) products since the start of data production on March 31, 2015. Prior to launch, the mission defined a set of criteria for core validation sites (CVS) that enable the testing of the key mission SM accuracy requirement (unbiased root-mean-square error 3/m3). The validation approach also includes other (“sparse network”) in situ SM measurements, satellite SM products, model-based SM products, and field experiments. Over the past six years, the SMAP SM products have been analyzed with respect to these reference data, and the analysis approaches themselves have been scrutinized in an effort to best understand the products’ performance. Validation of the most recent SMAP Level 2 and 3 SM retrieval products (R17000) shows that the L-band (1.4 GHz) radiometer-based SM record continues to meet mission requirements. The products are generally consistent with SM retrievals from the European Space Agency Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity mission, although there are differences in some regions. The high-resolution (3-km) SM retrieval product, generated by combining Copernicus Sentinel-1 data with SMAP observations, performs within expectations. Currently, however, there is limited availability of 3-km CVS data to support extensive validation at this spatial scale. The most recent (version 5) SMAP Level 4 SM data assimilation product providing surface and root-zone SM with complete spatio–temporal coverage at 9-km resolution also meets performance requirements. The SMAP SM validation program will continue throughout the mission life; future plans include expanding it to forested and high-latitude regions.

Vegetated soil plays an essential role in confronting climate change. It is the host material where inorganic carbon is stored and green infrastructures are built. The expected impacts of climate change, such as extreme wetting-drying cycles, pose an urgent need to understand the interplay between soil deformation, root growth, and water/solute uptake. The key to this challenge lies in the extension of unsaturated soil mechanics to incorporate bio-hydrological processes, such as root growth and water uptake. In this paper, we first provide an overview of the state-of-the-art knowledge of root-zone mechanics and bio-hydrology. We identify the main knowledge gaps and suggest an integrated, bottom-to-top approach to develop a multidisciplinary understanding of soil-water-root interaction. We demonstrate how emerging experimental and numerical methods can be used to study rooted soil under wetting--drying cycles. Although focused on the biophysical processes at root/soil particle scales, we discuss potential up-scaling from the root to the field scale and further research on remaining challenges, such as the microbial activities in vegetated soil.

Time-series of dryland rainfall over 100–1000 s of years are scarce but are needed to underpin improved predictions under future climate change. Dryland sand dunes are established Quaternary geomorphic archives, which also contain pore moisture as part of the unsaturated zone (USZ), with chemical tracers that provide a novel proxy for palaeomoisture. Chloride depth profiles, converted using a mass balance approach to temporal records, are known as hydrostratigraphies. Evaporative enrichment of meteoric chloride occurs in the near-surface zone and the established signature gets transported vertically via infiltration. This study explores the potential for this approach for southern Kalahari vegetated linear dunes comparing twelve (10–12 m deep) hydrostratigraphies across space and sampled in different years (2011, 2013, and 2016). Three further profiles sampled close to an interdune pan demonstrate that additional chloride is added locally to the dune closest to the pan. The remaining hydrostratigraphies show variable trends, with four broad groupings, leading us to suggest this region is unsuitable for this approach. Insights into this variable behavior were sought from simulating liquid and vapor flux using STEMMUS (Simultaneous Transfer of Energy, Mass and Momentum in Unsaturated Soil). Simulations suggest the mixing zone can reach 10 m thick, which helps account for the variation in hydrostratigraphies. Heterogeneity may also arise from spatially-heterogenous receipt of convective rainfall events and non-uniform vegetation cover. Furthermore, the vegetated nature of the landscape leads to less uniform moisture movement within the dune sands. We call for future applications to include site-specific insights into moisture dynamics.

Anaerobics increase resistance to gas transport and microbial activity in flooded soils. This may result in the presence of aerenchyma in the roots of some wetland plants. Increased aerenchyma airspaces enable oxygen to be transported from the above-ground plant parts to the submerged roots and rhizosphere. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of studies linking field experiments and eco-hydrological modeling to the parameterization of the physiological responses of typical wetland plant species to natural flooding events. Furthermore, from the modeling perspective, the contribution of aerenchyma was not sufficiently considered. The goal of this study was to develop and apply an eco-hydrological model capable of simulating various patterns of plant physiological responses to natural flooding events based on key processes of root oxygen diffusion and aerenchyma functioning in a variably-saturated wetland soil environment. Eco-hydrological experiments were conducted accordingly, with surface water level, root-zone soil water content, soil temperature, leaf net photosynthesis rate and root morphology monitored simultaneously in situ at a site dominated by meadow species Deyeuxia angustifolia (Kom.) Y. L. Chang and invaded shrub species Salix rosmarinifolia Linn. var. brachypoda (Trautv.et Mey.) Y.L. Chou in a typical natural floodplain wetland. The results are as follows: (1) Root oxygen respiration rates are strongly correlated with leaf net photosynthesis rates of the two plant types, particularly under flooding conditions during the growing season; (2) Meadow species with a preference for wet microhabitats has a competitive advantage over first-year invading shrub species during flooding events; and (3) an aerenchyma sub-model could improve the eco-hydrological model’s accuracy in capturing plant physiological responses. These findings have the potential to contribute to the management of wetland and its restorations.

One-third of the Earth’s land surface experiences seasonal freezing and thawing. Freezing-thawing transitions strongly impact land-atmosphere interactions and, thus, also the lower atmosphere above such areas. Observations of two L-band satellites, the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) and Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) missions, provide flags that characterize surfaces as either frozen or not frozen. However, both state transitions—freezing and thawing (FT)—are continuous and complex processes in space and time. Especially in the L-band, which has penetration depths of up to tens of centimeters, the brightness temperature (TB) may be generated by a vertically-mixed profile of different FT states, which cannot be described by the current version of the Community Microwave Emission Model (CMEM). To model such complex state transitions, we extended CMEM in Fresnel mode with an FT component by allowing for (1) a varying fraction of an open water surface on top of the soil, and (2) by implementing a temporal FT phase transition delay based on the difference between the soil surface temperature and the soil temperature at 2.5 cm depth. The extended CMEM (CMEM-FT) can capture the TB progression from a completely frozen to a thawed state of the contributing layer as observed by the L-band microwave radiometer ELBARA-III installed at the Maqu station at the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The extended model improves the correlation between the observations and CMEM simulations from 0.53/0.45 to 0.85/0.85 and its root-mean-square-error from 32/25 K to 20/15 K for H/V-polarization during thawing conditions. Yet, CMEM-FT does still not simulate the freezing transition sufficiently.

This paper coupled a unified passive and active microwave observation operator—namely, an enhanced, physically-based, discrete emission-scattering model—with the community land model (CLM) in a data assimilation (DA) system. By implementing the system default local ensemble transform Kalman filter (LETKF) algorithm, the Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) brightness temperature TBp (p = Horizontal or Vertical polarization) assimilations for only soil property retrieval and both soil properties and soil moisture estimates were investigated with the aid of in situ observations at the Maqu site. The results indicate improved estimates of soil properties of the topmost layer in comparison to measurements, as well as of the profile. Specifically, both assimilations of TBH lead to over a 48% reduction in root mean square errors (RMSEs) for the retrieved clay fraction from the background compared to the top layer measurements. Both assimilations of TBV reduce RMSEs by 36% for the sand fraction and by 28% for the clay fraction. However, the DA estimated soil moisture and land surface fluxes still exhibit discrepancies when compared to the measurements. The retrieved accurate soil properties alone are inadequate to improve those estimates. The discussed uncertainties (e.g., fixed PTF structures) in the CLM model structures should be mitigated.

Knowing the freeze-thaw (FT) state of the land surface is essential for many aspects of weather forecasting, climate, hydrology, and agriculture. Microwave L-band emission contains rather direct information about the FT-state because of its impact on the soil dielectric constant, which determines microwave emissivity and the optical depth profile. However, current L-band-based FT algorithms need reference values to distinguish between frozen and thawed soil, which are often not well known. We present a new FT-state-detection algorithm based on the daily variation of the H-polarized brightness temperature of the SMAP L3c FT global product for the northern hemisphere, which is available from 2015 to 2021. Exploiting the daily variation signal allows for a more reliable state detection, particularly during the transition periods, when the near-surface soil layer may freeze and thaw on sub-daily time scales. The new algorithm requires no reference values; its results agree with the SMAP FT state product by up to 98% in summer and up to 75% in winter. Compared to the FT state inferred indirectly from the 2-m air temperature and collocated soil temperature at 0–7 cm of the ERA5-land reanalysis, the new FT algorithm has a similar performance to the SMAP FT product. The most significant differences occur over the midlatitudes, including the Tibetan plateau and its downstream area. Here, daytime surface heating may lead to daily FT transitions, which are not considered by the SMAP FT state product but are correctly identified by the new algorithm. The new FT algorithm suggests a 15 days earlier start of the frozen-soil period than the ERA5-land’s estimate. This study is expected to extend the L-band microwave remote sensing data for improved FT detection.

The validation of global remote sensing data comprises multiple methods including comparison to field measurements, cross-comparisons and verification of physical consistency. Physical consistency and cross-comparisons are typically assessed for all pixels of the entire product extent, which requires intensive computing. This paper proposes a statistically representative sampling approach to reduce time and efforts associated with validations of remote sensing data having big data volume. A progressive sampling approach, as typically applied in machine learning to train algorithms, combined with two performance measures, was applied to estimate the required sample size. The confidence interval (CI) and maximum entropy probability distribution were used as indicators to represent accuracy. The approach was tested on 8 continental remote sensing-based data products over the Middle East and Africa. Without the consideration of climate classes, a sample size of 10,000–100,000, dependent on the product, met the nominally set CI and entropy indicators. This corresponds to

Topsoil structures and inhomogeneous distribution of moisture in the soil volume will induce dielectric discontinuities from air to bulk soil, which in turn may induce multiple and volume scattering and affect the microwave surface emission. In situ ELBARA-III L-band radiometer observations of brightness temperature TBp (p =H or V polarization) at the Maqu site on the Eastern Tibetan Plateau are exploited to understand the effect of surface roughness on coherent and incoherent emission processes. Assisted with in situ soil moisture (SM) and temperature profile measurements, this study develops an air-to-soil transition (ATS) model that incorporates the dielectric roughness (i.e., resulted from fine-scale topsoil structures and the soil volume) characterized by SM and geometric roughness effects, and demonstrates the necessity of the ATS model for modelling L-band TBp. The Wilheit (1978) coherent and Lv et al. (2014) incoherent models are compared for determining the dielectric constant of bulk soil in the ATS zone and for calculating soil effective temperature Teff. The Tor Vergata discrete scattering model (TVG) integrated with the advanced integral equation model (AIEM) is used as the baseline model configuration for simulating L-band TBp. Whereafter, the ATS model is integrated with the foregoing model for assessing its performance. Results show the ATS-based models reduce the underestimation of TBp (≈20-50 K) by the baseline simulations. Being dynamic in nature, the proposed dielectric roughness parameterization in the ATS model significantly improves the ability in interpreting TBp dynamics, which is important for improving SM retrieval at the global scale.

Terrestrial ecosystems play a critical role in the global carbon cycle and the feedbacks of carbon cycle will significantly impact future climate change. It's worth noting that semi-arid biomes in the Southern Hemisphere have driven the global carbon sink anomaly over the past 30 years. However, how does the desert/grassland biome transition zone, a part of arid and semi-arid biomes, respond to climate change and anthropogenic activities in carbon use efficiency (CUE) is still unclear. Therefore, based on the CUE of terrestrial ecosystem estimated by the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) data from 2001 to 2017, the spatial and temporal characteristics of CUE in Ningxia province, a typical desert/grassland biome transition zone, were studied. The main driving factors in climate and ecosystem were also investigated by partial correlation analysis. Results showed that the CUE of terrestrial ecosystems in desert/grassland biome transition zone is higher than 0.5, a constant value of CUE defined in many ecological models. However, the CUE varies with the ecosystem types even when they are located in the same climatic zone. There is a decreasing trend of annual CUE in the period of 2001–2017 and most of them will persistently decrease in future at pixels scales, which could be mainly caused by the land use change. Comparing the habitat conditions, we found the lower canopy density and water stress could increase the CUE in the same ecosystem, which indicates the plant could increase their efficiency of transforming carbon from the atmosphere to terrestrial biomass in adverse environment. Finally, the CUE significantly correlated to net primary productivity (NPP) and autotrophic respiration (Ra) in ecosystem processes, meanwhile water stress (lower precipitation) and heat stress (higher temperature) could increase the CUE, but the temperature has variable impacts in different ecosystem.

The inherent biases of different long-term gridded surface soil moisture (SSM) products, unconstrained by the in situ observations, implies different spatio-temporal patterns. In this study, the Random Forest (RF) model was trained to predict SSM from relevant land surface feature variables (i.e., land surface temperature, vegetation indices, soil texture, and geographical information) and precipitation, based on the in situ soil moisture data of the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN.). The results of the RF model show an RMSE of 0.05 m3 m−3 and a correlation coefficient of 0.9. The calculated impurity-based feature importance indicates that the Antecedent Precipitation Index affects most of the predicted soil moisture. The geographical coordinates also significantly influence the prediction (i.e., RMSE was reduced to 0.03 m3 m−3 after considering geographical coordinates), followed by land surface temperature, vegetation indices, and soil texture. The spatio-temporal pattern of RF predicted SSM was compared with the European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative (ESA-CCI) soil moisture product, using both time-longitude and latitude diagrams. The results indicate that the RF SSM captures the spatial distribution and the daily, seasonal, and annual variabilities globally.

A better understanding of the water and energy cycles at climate scale in the Third Pole Environment is essential for assessing and understanding the causes of changes in the cryosphere and hydrosphere in relation to changes of plateau atmosphere in the Asian monsoon system and for predicting the possible changes in water resources in South and East Asia. This paper reports the following results: (1) A platform of in situ observation stations is briefly described for quantifying the interactions in hydrosphere-pedosphere-atmosphere-cryosphere-biosphere over the Tibetan Plateau. (2) A multiyear in situ L-Band microwave radiometry of land surface processes is used to develop a new microwave radiative transfer modeling system. This new system improves the modeling of brightness temperature in both horizontal and vertical polarization. (3) A multiyear (2001–2018) monthly terrestrial actual evapotranspiration and its spatial distribution on the Tibetan Plateau is generated using the surface energy balance system (SEBS) forced by a combination of meteorological and satellite data. (4) A comparison of four large scale soil moisture products to in situ measurements is presented. (5) The trajectory of water vapor transport in the canyon area of Southeast Tibet in different seasons is analyzed, and (6) the vertical water vapor exchange between the upper troposphere and the lower stratosphere in different seasons is presented.

A notable increase in heavy precipitation has been observed over the Netherlands in recent decades. The aim of this study was to assess the influences of urban land use on these extreme precipitation patterns. Significant differences between an earlier multi-decadal period and a recent period were found in the Netherlands between 1961 and 2014. The significant changes in different indices indicate that severe precipitation events were not distributed homogeneously across the study area. The precipitation probability and distribution were assessed using the block maxima approach by comparing observations from urban and rural areas at different timescales. The possible effects of land use on extreme precipitation were assessed by quantifying the differences between urban and rural rain gauge stations according to the spatial gridding method. This study shows that urban land use may have affected the extreme precipitation patterns across the Netherlands. The data from all the categorized stations show that urban areas receive more intense extreme precipitation than do rural areas. Relative to other areas in the Netherlands, the urban areas in the western populated regions of the country exhibit prominent urban land use influences on the extreme precipitation patterns.

Water infiltration rate (WIR) into the soil profile was investigated through a comprehensive study harnessing spectral information of the soil surface. As soil spectroscopy provides invaluable information on soil attributes, and as WIR is a soil surface-dependent property, field spectroscopy may model WIR better than traditional laboratory spectral measurements. This is because sampling for the latter disrupts the soil-surface status. A field soil spectral library (FSSL), consisting of 114 samples with different textures from six different sites over the Mediterranean basin, combined with traditional laboratory spectral measurements, was created. Next, partial least squares regression analysis was conducted on the spectral and WIR data in different soil texture groups, showing better performance of the field spectral observations compared to traditional laboratory spectroscopy. Moreover, several quantitative spectral properties were lost due to the sampling procedure, and separating the samples according to texture gave higher accuracies. Although the visible near-infrared–shortwave infrared (VNIR–SWIR) spectral region provided better accuracy, we resampled the spectral data to the resolution of a Cubert hyperspectral sensor (VNIR). This hyperspectral sensor was then assembled on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to apply one selected spectral-based model to the UAV data and map the WIR in a semi-vegetated area within the Alento catchment, Italy. Comprehensive spectral and WIR ground-truth measurements were carried out simultaneously with the UAV–Cubert sensor flight. The results were satisfactorily validated on the ground using field samples, followed by a spatial uncertainty analysis, concluding that the UAV with hyperspectral remote sensing can be used to map soil surface-related soil properties.

A recent study showed a rise in total and extreme precipitation in the Netherlands over the past century. The present study attempts to characterize and attribute the seasonal variation of daily extreme precipitation events in the Netherlands. Statistical models for extreme values were used to fit daily rainfall maxima for all months during the period 1961–2014, using data from the 231 rain gauges distributed across the country. A generalized extreme value (GEV) approach was used to determine the probability distribution of extreme values and their dependency on time and the monthly North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index. The non-stationary models used to represent the annual cycle of the GEV parameters assumed an invariant shape parameter and harmonic functions as location and scale parameters. The best non-stationary model was selected using Akaike’s information criterion (AIC) and the log-likelihood ratio test (LRT). The results indicated that the estimates derived from the non-stationary model differed from those obtained with the aid of the stationary model, and had lower uncertainties. These non-stationary estimates were within the confidence intervals (CI) of the stationary estimates at most rain gauge stations. The non-stationary model estimated parameters with less uncertainty and with smaller CI, thus permitting more accurate representation of extreme precipitation in the Netherlands. The spatial pattern of annual mean location and scale GEV parameters was compatible with coastal, land cover (such as the wooded and heathland areas of the Veluwe region of the province of Gelderland) and orography (in the southeast of the country). The location parameter peaked over the west coast, especially on the central west coast during the summer half-year, while the centre and east of the country had the highest values during the winter half-year. The scale parameter peaked in the centre of the country during the summer, in the east in the early summer and along the west coast in the spring. The 10-year and 50-year return levels were calculated with the aid of the non-stationary model for all months. The spatial distribution of these extreme event probability clearly reflects the regional differences in the Netherlands.

This paper analyses the effect of the spatial assessment scale on irrigation performance indicators in small and medium-scale agriculture. Three performance indicators—adequacy (i.e., sufficiency of water use to meet the crop water requirement), equity (i.e., fairness of irrigation distribution), and productivity (i.e., unit of physical crop production/yield per unit water consumption)—are evaluated in five irrigation schemes for three spatial resolutions—250 m, 100 m, and 30 m. Each scheme has varying plot sizes and distributions, with average plot sizes ranging from 0.2 ha to 13 ha. The datasets are derived from the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) water productivity through open access of remotely sensed–derived data (the Water Productivity Open Access Portal—WaPOR) database. Irrigation indicators performed differently in different aspects; for adequacy, all three resolutions show similar spatial trends for relative evapotranspiration (ET) across levels for all years. However, the estimation of relative ET is often higher at higher resolution. In terms of equity, all resolutions show similar inter-annual trends in the coefficient of variation (CV); higher resolutions usually have a higher CV of the annual evapotranspiration and interception (ETIa) while capturing more spatial variability. For productivity, higher resolutions show lower crop water productivity (CWP) due to higher aboveground biomass productivity (AGBP) estimations in lower resolutions; they always have a higher CV of CWP. We find all resolutions of 250 m, 100 m, and 30 m suitable for inter-annual and inter-scheme assessments regardless of plot size. While each resolution shows consistent temporal trends, the magnitude of the trend in both space and time is smoothed by the 100 m and 250 m resolution datasets. This frequently results in substantial differences in the irrigation performance assessment criteria for inter-plot comparisons; therefore, 250 m and 100 m are not recommended for inter-plot comparison for all plot sizes, particularly small plots (

In order to improve the simulation accuracy of directional brightness temperature (DBT) and the retrieval accuracy of component temperature, a model considering intra-row heterogeneity to simulate the DBT angular distribution over crop canopy is proposed. At individual scale, the probability of leaf appearance is inversely proportional to the distance from central stem. On the basis of this assumption, we formulated leaf area volume density (LAVD) spatial distribution at three hierarchical scales: individual scale, row scale, and scene scale. The equations for directional gap probability and bi-directional gap probability were modified to adapt the heterogeneity of row structure. Afterwards, a straightforward radiative transfer model was built based on the gap probabilities. A set of simulated data was generated by the thermal radiosity-graphics combined model (TRGM) as the benchmark to evaluate both forward simulation and inversion ability of the new model; we compared the new DBT model against an existing model assuming row as homogeneous box. With the growth of crops, the canopy structure of row crops will gradually change from row structure to continuous canopy. The new DBT model agreed with the TRGM model much better than the homogeneous row model at the middle stage of the crop growth season. The new model and the homogeneous row model achieve similar accuracy at early stage and end stage. At the middle growth stage, the new model can improve the accuracy of soil temperature retrieval. We recommend the new DBT model as an option to improve the DBT simulation and component temperature retrieval for row-planted crop canopy. In particular, the more accurate component temperatures during the middle growth stage are fundamentally important in characterizing crop water status, evapotranspiration, and soil moisture, which are subsequently critical for predicting crop productivity.

It is crucial to monitor the dynamics of soil moisture over the Tibetan Plateau, while considering its important role in understanding the land-atmosphere interactions and their influences on climate systems (e.g., Eastern Asian Summer Monsoon). However, it is very challenging to have both the surface and root zone soil moisture (SSM and RZSM) over this area, especially the study of feedbacks between soil moisture and climate systems requires long-term (e.g., decadal) datasets. In this study, the SSM data from different sources (satellites, land data assimilation, and in-situ measurements) were blended while using triple collocation and least squares method with the constraint of in-situ data climatology. A depth scaling was performed based on the blended SSM product, using Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) matching approach and simulation with Soil Moisture Analytical Relationship (SMAR) model, to estimate the RZSM. The final product is a set of long-term (~10 yr) consistent SSM and RZSM product. The inter-comparison with other existing SSM and RZSM products demonstrates the credibility of the data blending procedure used in this study and the reliability of the CDF matching method and SMAR model in deriving the RZSM.

Climate services are becoming the backbone to translate climate knowledge, data & information into climate-informed decision-making at all levels, from public administrations to business operators. It is essential to assess the technical and scientific quality of the provided climate data and information products, including their value to users, to establish the relation of trust between providers of climate data and information and various downstream users. The climate data and information products (i.e., from satellite, in-situ and reanalysis) shall be fully traceable, adequately documented and uncertainty quantified and can provide sufficient guidance for users to address their specific needs and feedbacks. This paper discusses details on how to apply the quality assurance framework to deliver timely assessments of the quality and usability of Essential Climate Variable (ECV) products. It identifies an overarching structure for the quality assessment of single product ECVs (i.e., consists of only one single variable), multi-product ECVs (i.e., more than one single parameter), thematic products (i.e., water, energy and carbon cycles), as well as the usability assessment. To support a traceable climate service, other than rigorously evaluating the technical and scientific quality of ECV products, which represent the upstream of climate services, how the uncertainty propagates into the resulting benefit (utility) for the users of the climate service needs to be detailed.

Soil moisture is an essential variable in Earth surface modeling. Two dedicated satellite missions, the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), are currently in operation to map the global distribution of soil moisture. However, at the longer L-band wavelength of these satellites, the emitting behavior of the land becomes very complex due to the unknown deeper penetration depth. This complexity leads to more uncertainty in calibration and validation of satellite soil moisture product and their applications. In the framework of zeroth-order incoherent microwave radiative transfer model, the soil effective temperature is the only component that contains depth information and thus provides the necessary link to quantify the penetration depth. By means of the multi-layer soil effective temperature (Lv’s T e f f ) scheme, we have determined the relationship between the penetration depth and soil effective temperature and verified it against field observations at the Maqu Network. The key findings are that the penetration depth can be estimated according to Lv’s T e f f scheme with the assumption of linear soil temperature gradient along the optical depth; and conversely, the soil temperature at the penetration depth should be equal to the soil effective temperature with the same linear assumption. The accuracy of this inference depends on to what extent the assumption of linear soil temperature gradient is satisfied. The result of this study is expected to advance understanding of the soil moisture products retrieved by SMOS and SMAP and improve the techniques in data assimilation and climate research.

The spatiotemporal distribution of soil moisture over the Tibetan Plateau is important for understanding the regional water cycle and climate change. In this paper, the surface soil moisture in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau is estimated from time-series VV-polarized Sentinel-1A observations by coupling the water cloud model (WCM) and the advanced integral equation model (AIEM). The vegetation indicator in the WCM is represented by the leaf area index (LAI), which is smoothed and interpolated from Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LAI eight-day products. The AIEM requires accurate roughness parameters, which are parameterized by the effective roughness parameters. The first halves of the Sentinel-1A observations from October 2014 to May 2016 are adopted for the model calibration. The calibration results show that the backscattering coefficient (σ°) simulated from the coupled model are consistent with those of the Sentinel-1A with integrated Pearson’s correlation coefficients R of 0.80 and 0.92 for the ascending and descending data, respectively. The variability of soil moisture is correctly modeled by the coupled model. Based on the calibrated model, the soil moisture is retrieved using a look-up table method. The results show that the trends of the in situ soil moisture are effectively captured by the retrieved soil moisture with an integrated R of 0.60 and 0.82 for the ascending and descending data, respectively. The integrated bias, mean absolute error, and root mean square error are 0.006, 0.048, and 0.073 m3/m3 for the ascending data, and are 0.012, 0.026, and 0.055 m3/m3 for the descending data, respectively. Discussions of the effective roughness parameters and uncertainties in the LAI demonstrate the importance of accurate parameterizations of the surface roughness parameters and vegetation for the soil moisture retrieval. These results demonstrate the capability and reliability of Sentinel-1A data for estimating the soil moisture over the Tibetan Plateau. It is expected that our results can contribute to developing operational methods for soil moisture retrieval using the Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-1B satellites.

Effective soil temperature T e f f is one of the basic parameters in passive microwave remote sensing of soil moisture. At present, dedicated satellite soil moisture monitoring missions use the L-band as the operating frequency. However, T e f f at the L-band is strongly affected by soil moisture and temperature profiles. Recently, a two-layer scheme and a corresponding multilayer form have been developed to accommodate such influences. In this study, the soil moisture/temperature data collected and simulated by the Noah land surface model across the Maqu Network are used to verify the newly developed schemes. There are two key findings. Firstly, the new two-layer scheme is able to assess which site provides relatively higher accuracy when estimating T e f f . It is found that, on average, nearly 20% of the T e f f signal cannot be captured by the Maqu Network, in the currently assumed common installation configuration. This knowledge is important, since the spatial averaged brightness temperature (a function of T e f f ) is used to determine soil moisture. Secondly, the developed method has made it possible to identify that the optimal mounting depths for the observation pair are 5 cm and 20 cm for calculating T e f f at the center station in the Maqu Network. It has been suggested that the newly developed method can provide an objective way to configure an optimal soil moisture/temperature network and improve the representativeness of the existing networks regarding the calculation of T e f f .

The inter-comparison of different soil moisture (SM) products over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) reveals the inconsistency among different SM products, when compared to in situ measurement. It highlights the need to constrain the model simulated SM with the in situ measured data climatology. In this study, the in situ soil moisture networks, combined with the classification of climate zones over the TP, were used to produce the in situ measured SM climatology at the plateau scale. The generated TP scale in situ SM climatology was then used to scale the model-simulated SM data, which was subsequently used to scale the SM satellite observations. The climatology-scaled satellite and model-simulated SM were then blended objectively, by applying the triple collocation and least squares method. The final blended SM can replicate the SM dynamics across different climatic zones, from sub-humid regions to semi-arid and arid regions over the TP. This demonstrates the need to constrain the model-simulated SM estimates with the in situ measurements before their further applications in scaling climatology of SM satellite products.

Different canopy resistance (rc) parameterization has been used in land surface models to simulate actual evapotranspiration (ETc) and soil hydraulic variable for crop fields. However, the influence of rc parameterization on evapotranspiration (ET) partitioning and soil water dynamics has not been fully investigated with consideration of the coupled soil water and vapor physics. This study investigated the influential mechanisms of five rc methods (viz., Jarvis, Katerji-Perrier, Massman, Kelliher-Leuning, and Farias) on ET partitioning and soil water contents in an irrigated maize field under a semiarid climate through a soil water and vapor transfer model. The Jarvis method presented the best ET results (R2 = 0.86 and RMSE = 0.71 mm·d-1). Different rc parameterization mainly altered the simulated amount of soil water contents, while not changed the response of soil water dynamics to irrigation events. By the integrated analysis of the ET partitioning and root-zone water budget, different rc methods varied in the choice of the optimum irrigation water use strategies. This study identified the direct and indirect impacts of rc on the ET partitioning and emphasizes the necessity of both the ET partitioning and water supply sources in the decision-making for irrigation water management in semiarid regions. Peri-urban landscapes are urban-rural interfaces that experience challenges due to dynamic urbanisation and climate change effects. These landscapes are also characterized by overlapping jurisdictions, blurred boundaries, and regulatory slippage, leading to diverse and fragmented interactions of governance actors. This is particularly important in the context of peri-urban lake ecosystems, where conflicting goals between governance actors (state to civil society) often result in socio-ecological transformations of lakes. While existing governance studies provide knowledge on actor interactions in urban areas, there is a need to understand interactions between actors in the peri-urban context. To address this gap, we conduct a systematic review to conceptualize governance interactions between actors concerning the governance of peri-urban lake ecosystems. We identify four dominant discourses and their characteristics that may shape forms of lake ecosystem governance. In doing so, we draw insights from the literature review and present a graphical model to illustrate governance actor interactions, contributing to the transformation of lake ecosystems across spatial and temporal dimensions.
