Multiple benchmarks have been developed to assess the alignment between deep neural networks (DNNs) and human vision. In almost all cases these benchmarks are observational in the sense they are composed of behavioural and brain responses to naturalistic images that have not been manipulated to test hypotheses regarding how DNNs or humans perceive and identify objects. Here we introduce the toolbox MindSet: Vision, consisting of a collection of image datasets and related scripts designed to test DNNs on 30 psychological findings. In all experimental conditions, the stimuli are systematically manipulated to test specific hypotheses regarding human visual perception and object recognition. In addition to providing pre-generated datasets of images, we provide code to regenerate these datasets, offering many configurable parameters which greatly extend the dataset versatility for different research contexts, and code to facilitate the testing of DNNs on these image datasets using three different methods (similarity judgments, out-of-distribution classification, and decoder method), accessible at https://github.com/MindSetVision/mindset-vision. We test ResNet-152 on each of these methods as an example of how the toolbox can be used.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have been widely deployed for their remarkable capability to generate texts resembling human language. However, they could be misused by criminals to create deceptive content, such as fake news and phishing emails, which raises ethical concerns. Watermarking is a key technique to mitigate the misuse of LLMs, which embeds a watermark (e.g., a bit string) into a text generated by a LLM. Consequently, this enables the detection of texts generated by a LLM as well as the tracing of generated texts to a specific user. The major limitation of existing watermark techniques is that they cannot accurately or efficiently extract the watermark from a text, especially when the watermark is a long bit string. This key limitation impedes their deployment for real-world applications, e.g., tracing generated texts to a specific user. This work introduces a novel watermarking method for LLM-generated text grounded in \textbf{error-correction codes} to address this challenge. We provide strong theoretical analysis, demonstrating that under bounded adversarial word/token edits (insertion, deletion, and substitution), our method can correctly extract watermarks, offering a provable robustness guarantee. This breakthrough is also evidenced by our extensive experimental results. The experiments show that our method substantially outperforms existing baselines in both accuracy and robustness on benchmark datasets. For instance, when embedding a bit string of length 12 into a 200-token generated text, our approach attains an impressive match rate of $98.4\%$, surpassing the performance of Yoo et al. (state-of-the-art baseline) at $85.6\%$. When subjected to a copy-paste attack involving the injection of 50 tokens to generated texts with 200 words, our method maintains a substantial match rate of $90.8\%$, while the match rate of Yoo et al. diminishes to below $65\%$.

With the exponential growth of video data, there is an urgent need for automated technology to analyze and comprehend video content. However, existing video understanding models are often task-specific and lack a comprehensive capability of handling diverse tasks. The success of large language models (LLMs) like GPT has demonstrated their impressive abilities in sequence causal reasoning. Building upon this insight, we propose a novel framework called VideoLLM that leverages the sequence reasoning capabilities of pre-trained LLMs from natural language processing (NLP) for video sequence understanding. VideoLLM incorporates a carefully designed Modality Encoder and Semantic Translator, which convert inputs from various modalities into a unified token sequence. This token sequence is then fed into a decoder-only LLM. Subsequently, with the aid of a simple task head, our VideoLLM yields an effective unified framework for different kinds of video understanding tasks. To evaluate the efficacy of VideoLLM, we conduct extensive experiments using multiple LLMs and fine-tuning methods. We evaluate our VideoLLM on eight tasks sourced from four different datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the understanding and reasoning capabilities of LLMs can be effectively transferred to video understanding tasks. Action detection is a challenging video understanding task, requiring modeling spatio-temporal and interaction relations. Current methods usually model actor-actor and actor-context relations separately, ignoring their complementarity and mutual support. To solve this problem, we propose a novel network called Multi-Relation Support Network (MRSN). In MRSN, Actor-Context Relation Encoder (ACRE) and Actor-Actor Relation Encoder (AARE) model the actor-context and actor-actor relation separately. Then Relation Support Encoder (RSE) computes the supports between the two relations and performs relation-level interactions. Finally, Relation Consensus Module (RCM) enhances two relations with the long-term relations from the Long-term Relation Bank (LRB) and yields a consensus. Our experiments demonstrate that modeling relations separately and performing relation-level interactions can achieve and outperformer state-of-the-art results on two challenging video datasets: AVA and UCF101-24., Comment: 6 pages

A wide variety of orthographic coding schemes and models of visual word identification have been developed to account for masked priming data that provide a measure of orthographic similarity between letter strings. These models tend to include hand-coded orthographic representations with single unit coding for specific forms of knowledge (e.g., units coding for a letter in a given position). Here we assess how well a range of these coding schemes and models account for the pattern of form priming effects taken from the Form Priming Project and compare these findings to results observed with 11 standard deep neural network models (DNNs) developed in computer science. We find that deep convolutional networks (CNNs) perform as well or better than the coding schemes and word recognition models, whereas transformer networks did less well. The success of CNNs is remarkable as their architectures were not developed to support word recognition (they were designed to perform well on object recognition), they classify pixel images of words (rather than artificial encodings of letter strings), and their training was highly simplified (not respecting many key aspects of human experience). In addition to these form priming effects, we find that the DNNs can account for visual similarity effects on priming that are beyond all current psychological models of priming. The findings add to the recent work of (Hannagan et al., 2021) and suggest that CNNs should be given more attention in psychology as models of human visual word recognition.

The focus of this work is sample-efficient deep reinforcement learning (RL) with a simulator. One useful property of simulators is that it is typically easy to reset the environment to a previously observed state. We propose an algorithmic framework, named uncertainty-first local planning (UFLP), that takes advantage of this property. Concretely, in each data collection iteration, with some probability, our meta-algorithm resets the environment to an observed state which has high uncertainty, instead of sampling according to the initial-state distribution. The agent-environment interaction then proceeds as in the standard online RL setting. We demonstrate that this simple procedure can dramatically improve the sample cost of several baseline RL algorithms on difficult exploration tasks. Notably, with our framework, we can achieve super-human performance on the notoriously hard Atari game, Montezuma's Revenge, with a simple (distributional) double DQN. In this report, we present our champion solutions to five tracks at Ego4D challenge. We leverage our developed InternVideo, a video foundation model, for five Ego4D tasks, including Moment Queries, Natural Language Queries, Future Hand Prediction, State Change Object Detection, and Short-term Object Interaction Anticipation. InternVideo-Ego4D is an effective paradigm to adapt the strong foundation model to the downstream ego-centric video understanding tasks with simple head designs. In these five tasks, the performance of InternVideo-Ego4D comprehensively surpasses the baseline methods and the champions of CVPR2022, demonstrating the powerful representation ability of InternVideo as a video foundation model. Capturing the state changes of interacting objects is a key technology for understanding human-object interactions. This technical report describes our method using heterogeneous backbones for the Ego4D Object State Change Classification and PNR Temporal Localization Challenge. In the challenge, we used the heterogeneous video understanding backbones, namely CSN with 3D convolution as operator and VideoMAE with Transformer as operator. Our method achieves an accuracy of 0.796 on OSCC while achieving an absolute temporal localization error of 0.516 on PNR. We provide the technical report for Ego4D audio-only diarization challenge in ECCV 2022. Speaker diarization takes the audio streams as input and outputs the homogeneous segments according to the speaker's identity. It aims to solve the problem of "Who spoke when." In this paper, we explore a Detection-based method to tackle the audio-only speaker diarization task. Our method first extracts audio features by audio backbone and then feeds the feature to a detection-generate network to get the speaker proposals. Finally, after postprocessing, we can get the diarization results. The validation dataset validates this method, and our method achieves 53.85 DER on the test dataset. The transductive inference is an effective technique in the few-shot learning task, where query sets update prototypes to improve themselves. However, these methods optimize the model by considering only the classification scores of the query instances as confidence while ignoring the uncertainty of these classification scores. In this paper, we propose a novel method called Uncertainty-Based Network, which models the uncertainty of classification results with the help of mutual information. Specifically, we first data augment and classify the query instance and calculate the mutual information of these classification scores. Then, mutual information is used as uncertainty to assign weights to classification scores, and the iterative update strategy based on classification scores and uncertainties assigns the optimal weights to query instances in prototype optimization. Temporal action detection (TAD) is extensively studied in the video understanding community by generally following the object detection pipeline in images. However, complex designs are not uncommon in TAD, such as two-stream feature extraction, multi-stage training, complex temporal modeling, and global context fusion. In this paper, we do not aim to introduce any novel technique for TAD. Instead, we study a simple, straightforward, yet must-known baseline given the current status of complex design and low detection efficiency in TAD. In our simple baseline (termed BasicTAD), we decompose the TAD pipeline into several essential components: data sampling, backbone design, neck construction, and detection head. We extensively investigate the existing techniques in each component for this baseline, and more importantly, perform end-to-end training over the entire pipeline thanks to the simplicity of design. As a result, this simple BasicTAD yields an astounding and real-time RGB-Only baseline very close to the state-of-the-art methods with two-stream inputs. In addition, we further improve the BasicTAD by preserving more temporal and spatial information in network representation (termed as PlusTAD). Empirical results demonstrate that our PlusTAD is very efficient and significantly outperforms the previous methods on the datasets of THUMOS14 and FineAction. Meanwhile, we also perform in-depth visualization and error analysis on our proposed method and try to provide more insights on the TAD problem. A large body of research in continual learning is devoted to overcoming the catastrophic forgetting of neural networks by designing new algorithms that are robust to the distribution shifts. However, the majority of these works are strictly focused on the "algorithmic" part of continual learning for a "fixed neural network architecture", and the implications of using different architectures are mostly neglected. Even the few existing continual learning methods that modify the model assume a fixed architecture and aim to develop an algorithm that efficiently uses the model throughout the learning experience. However, in this work, we show that the choice of architecture can significantly impact the continual learning performance, and different architectures lead to different trade-offs between the ability to remember previous tasks and learning new ones. Temporal action detection aims to locate the boundaries of action in the video. The current method based on boundary matching enumerates and calculates all possible boundary matchings to generate proposals. However, these methods neglect the long-range context aggregation in boundary prediction. At the same time, due to the similar semantics of adjacent matchings, local semantic aggregation of densely-generated matchings cannot improve semantic richness and discrimination. In this paper, we propose the end-to-end proposal generation method named Dual Context Aggregation Network (DCAN) to aggregate context on two levels, namely, boundary level and proposal level, for generating high-quality action proposals, thereby improving the performance of temporal action detection. Specifically, we design the Multi-Path Temporal Context Aggregation (MTCA) to achieve smooth context aggregation on boundary level and precise evaluation of boundaries. For matching evaluation, Coarse-to-fine Matching (CFM) is designed to aggregate context on the proposal level and refine the matching map from coarse to fine. We conduct extensive experiments on ActivityNet v1.3 and THUMOS-14. DCAN obtains an average mAP of 35.39% on ActivityNet v1.3 and reaches mAP 54.14% at IoU@0.5 on THUMOS-14, which demonstrates DCAN can generate high-quality proposals and achieve state-of-the-art performance. A primary focus area in continual learning research is alleviating the "catastrophic forgetting" problem in neural networks by designing new algorithms that are more robust to the distribution shifts. While the recent progress in continual learning literature is encouraging, our understanding of what properties of neural networks contribute to catastrophic forgetting is still limited. To address this, instead of focusing on continual learning algorithms, in this work, we focus on the model itself and study the impact of "width" of the neural network architecture on catastrophic forgetting, and show that width has a surprisingly significant effect on forgetting. To explain this effect, we study the learning dynamics of the network from various perspectives such as gradient orthogonality, sparsity, and lazy training regime. We provide potential explanations that are consistent with the empirical results across different architectures and continual learning benchmarks., Comment: ICML 2022

Secure multi-party computation enables multiple mutually distrusting parties to perform computations on data without revealing the data itself, and has become one of the core technologies behind privacy-preserving machine learning. In this work, we present several improved privacy-preserving protocols for both linear and non-linear layers in machine learning. For linear layers, we present an extended beaver triple protocol for bilinear maps that significantly reduces communication of convolution layer. For non-linear layers, we introduce novel protocols for computing the sigmoid and softmax function. Both functions are essential building blocks for machine learning training of classification tasks. Our protocols are both more scalable and robust than prior constructions, and improves runtime performance by 3-17x. Finally, we introduce Morse-STF, an end-to-end privacy-preserving system for machine learning training that leverages all these improved protocols. Our system achieves a 1.8x speedup on logistic regression and 3.9-4.9x speedup on convolutional neural networks compared to prior state-of-the-art systems.

We study query and computationally efficient planning algorithms with linear function approximation and a simulator. We assume that the agent only has local access to the simulator, meaning that the agent can only query the simulator at states that have been visited before. This setting is more practical than many prior works on reinforcement learning with a generative model. We propose two algorithms, named confident Monte Carlo least square policy iteration (Confident MC-LSPI) and confident Monte Carlo Politex (Confident MC-Politex) for this setting. Under the assumption that the Q-functions of all policies are linear in known features of the state-action pairs, we show that our algorithms have polynomial query and computational costs in the dimension of the features, the effective planning horizon, and the targeted sub-optimality, while these costs are independent of the size of the state space. One technical contribution of our work is the introduction of a novel proof technique that makes use of a virtual policy iteration algorithm. We use this method to leverage existing results on $\ell_\infty$-bounded approximate policy iteration to show that our algorithm can learn the optimal policy for the given initial state even only with local access to the simulator. We propose a simulation framework for generating instance-dependent noisy labels via a pseudo-labeling paradigm. We show that the distribution of the synthetic noisy labels generated with our framework is closer to human labels compared to independent and class-conditional random flipping. Equipped with controllable label noise, we study the negative impact of noisy labels across a few practical settings to understand when label noise is more problematic. We also benchmark several existing algorithms for learning with noisy labels and compare their behavior on our synthetic datasets and on the datasets with independent random label noise. Additionally, with the availability of annotator information from our simulation framework, we propose a new technique, Label Quality Model (LQM), that leverages annotator features to predict and correct against noisy labels. Object detection is a typical multi-task learning application, which optimizes classification and regression simultaneously. However, classification loss always dominates the multi-task loss in anchor-based methods, hampering the consistent and balanced optimization of the tasks. In this paper, we find that shifting the bounding boxes can change the division of positive and negative samples in classification, meaning classification depends on regression. Moreover, we summarize three important conclusions about fine-tuning loss weights, considering different datasets, optimizers and regression loss functions. Based on the above conclusions, we propose Adaptive Loss Weight Adjustment(ALWA) to solve the imbalance in optimizing anchor-based methods according to statistical characteristics of losses. By incorporating ALWA into previous state-of-the-art detectors, we achieve a significant performance gain on PASCAL VOC and MS COCO, even with L1, SmoothL1 and CIoU loss. In this work, we study algorithms for learning in infinite-horizon undiscounted Markov decision processes (MDPs) with function approximation. We first show that the regret analysis of the Politex algorithm (a version of regularized policy iteration) can be sharpened from $O(T^{3/4})$ to $O(\sqrt{T})$ under nearly identical assumptions, and instantiate the bound with linear function approximation. Our result provides the first high-probability $O(\sqrt{T})$ regret bound for a computationally efficient algorithm in this setting. The exact implementation of Politex with neural network function approximation is inefficient in terms of memory and computation. Since our analysis suggests that we need to approximate the average of the action-value functions of past policies well, we propose a simple efficient implementation where we train a single Q-function on a replay buffer with past data. We show that this often leads to superior performance over other implementation choices, especially in terms of wall-clock time. Our work also provides a novel theoretical justification for using experience replay within policy iteration algorithms.
