Abstract In the last few decades, nanoparticles have been a prominent topic in various fields, particularly in agriculture, due to their unique physicochemical properties. Herein, molybdenum copper lindgrenite Cu3(MoO4)2(OH)2 (CM) nanoflakes (NFs) are synthesized by a one-step reaction involving α-MoO3 and CuCO3⋅Cu(OH)2⋅xH2O solution at low temperature for large scale industrial production and developed as an effective antifungal agent for the oilseed rape. This synthetic method demonstrates great potential for industrial applications. Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results reveal that CM samples exhibit a pure monoclinic structure. TG and DSC results show the thermal stable properties. It can undergo a phase transition form copper molybdate (Cu3Mo2O9) at about 300 °C. Then Cu3Mo2O9 nanoparticles decompose into at CuO and MoO3 at 791 °C. The morphology of CM powder is mainly composed of uniformly distributed parallelogram-shaped nanoflakes with an average thickness of about 30 nm. Moreover, the binding energy of CM NFs is measured to be 2.8 eV. To assess the antifungal properties of these materials, both laboratory and outdoor experiments are conducted. In the pour plate test, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of CM NFs against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (S. sclerotiorum) is determined to be 100 ppm, and the zone of inhibiting S. sclerotiorum is 14 mm. When the concentration is above 100 nm, the change rate of the hyphae circle slows down a little and begins to decrease until to 200 ppm. According to the aforementioned findings, the antifungal effects of a nano CM NFs solution are assessed at different concentrations (0 ppm (clear water), 40 ppm, and 80 ppm) on the growth of oilseed rape in an outdoor setting. The results indicate that the application of CM NFs led to significant inhibition of S. sclerotiorum. Specifically, when the nano CM solution was sprayed once at the initial flowering stage at a concentration of 80 ppm, S. sclerotiorum growth was inhibited by approximately 34%. Similarly, when the solution was sprayed once at the initial flowering stage and once at the rape pod stage, using a concentration of 40 ppm, a similar level of inhibition was achieved. These outcomes show that CM NFs possess the ability to bind with more metal ions due to their larger specific surface area. Additionally, their semiconductor physical properties enable the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, CM NFs hold great potential for widespread application in antifungal products.

Prediction from the dual-phase nature of superionic conductors-both solid and liquid-like-is that mobile ions in the material may experience reversible extraction-reinsertion by an external electric field. However, this type of pseudoelectroelasticity has not been confirmed in situ, and no details on the microscopic mechanism are known. Here, we in situ monitor the pseudoelectroelasticity of monocrystalline Cu2S nanowires (NWs) using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Specifically, we reveal the atomic scale details including phase transformation, migration and redox reactions of Cu+ ions, nucleation, growth, as well as spontaneous shrinking of Cu protrusion. Caterpillar-diffusion-dominated deformation is confirmed by the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) observation and  ab initio calculation, which can be driven by either an external electric field or chemical potential difference. The observed spring-like behavior was creatively adopted for electric nanoactuators. Our findings are crucial to elucidate the mechanism of pseudoelectroelasticity and could potentially stimulate in-depth research into electrochemical and nanoelectromechanical systems.

Inside a liquid solution, oriented attachment (OA) is now recognized to be as important a pathway to crystal growth as other, more conventional growth mechanisms. However, the driving force that controls the occurrence of OA is still poorly understood. Here, using in-situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy, we demonstrate the ligand-controlled OA of citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles at atomic resolution. Our data reveal that particle pairs rotate randomly at a separation distance greater than twice the layer thickness of adsorbed ligands. In contrast, when the particles get closer, their ligands overlap and guide the rotation into a directional mode until they share a common {111} orientation, when a sudden contact occurs accompanied by the simultaneous expulsion of the ligands on this surface. First-principle calculations confirm that the lower ligand binding energy on {111} surfaces is the intrinsic reason for the preferential attachment at this facet, rather than on other low-index facets.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) commercially dominate portable energy storage and have been extended to hybrid/electric vehicles by utilizing electrode materials with enhanced energy density. However, the energy density and cycling life of LIBs must extend beyond the current reach of commercial electrodes to meet the performance requirements for transportation applications. Carbon-based anodes, serving as the main negative electrodes in LIBs, have an intrinsic capacity limitation due to the intercalation mechanism. Some nanostructured carbon materials offer very interesting reversible capacities and can be considered as future anode materials. However, their fabrication processes are often complicated and expensive. Theoretically, using a lithium metal anode is the best way of delivering high energy density due to its largest theoretical capacity of more than 3800 mAh g-1; however, lithium metal is highly reactive with liquid electrolytes. Alternative anodes are being explored, including other lithium-reactive metals, such as Si, Ge, Zn, V, and so forth. These metals react reversibly with a large amount of Li per formula unit to form lithium-metal alloys, rendering these materials promising candidates for next-generation LIBs with high energy density. Though, most of these pure metallic anodes experience large volume changes during lithiation and delithiation processes that often results in cracking of the anode material and a loss electrical contact between the particles. Nanosized metal sulfides were recently found to possess better cycling stability and larger reversible capacities over pure metals. Further improvements and developments of metal sulfide-based anodes rely on a fundamental understanding of their electrochemical cycling mechanisms. Not only must the specific electrochemical reactions be correctly identified, but also the microstructural evolution upon electrochemical cycling, which often dictates the cyclability and stability of nanomaterials in batteries, must be clearly understood. Probing these dynamic evolution processes, i.e. the lithiation reactions and morphology evolutions, are often challenging. It requires both high-resolution chemical analysis and microstructural identification. In situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) coupled with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) has recently been raised as one of the most powerful techniques for monitoring electrochemical processes in anode materials for LIBs. In this work, we focus on elucidating the origin of the structural stability of SnS2 during electrochemical cycling by revealing the microstructural evolution of SnS2 upon lithiation using in situ TEM. Crystalline SnS2 was observed to undergo a two-step reaction after the initial lithium intercalation: (1) irreversible formation of metallic tin and amorphous lithium sulfide and (2) reversible transformation of metallic tin to Li-Sn alloys, which is determined to be the rate-determining step. More interestingly, it was discovered that a self-assembled composite framework formed during the irreversible conversion reaction, which has not been previously reported. Crystalline Sn nanoparticles are well arranged within an amorphous Li2S "matrix" in this self-assembled framework. This nanoscale framework confines the locations of individual Sn nanoparticles and prevents particle agglomeration during the subsequent cycling processes, therefore providing desired structural tolerance and warranting a sufficientelectron pathway. Our results not only explain the outstanding cycling stability of SnS2 over metallic tin anodes, but also provide important mechanistic insights into the design of high-performance electrodes for next-generation LIBs through the integration of a unique nanoframework.

Cation exchange (CE) has been recognized as a particularly powerful tool for the synthesis of heterogeneous nanocrystals. At present, CE can be divided into two categories, namely ion solvation-driven CE reaction and thermally activated CE reaction. Here we report an electrically driven CE reaction to prepare individual nanostructures inside a transmission electron microscope. During the process, Cd is eliminated due to Ohmic heating, whereas Cu+ migrates into the crystal driven by the electrical field force. Contrast experiments reveal that the feasibility of electrically driven CE is determined by the structural similarity of the sulfur sublattices between the initial and final phases, and the standard electrode potentials of the active electrodes. Our experimental results demonstrate a strategy for the selective growth of individual nanocrystals and provide crucial insights into understanding of the microscopic pathways leading to the formation of heterogeneous structures.

The solid-electrolyte-based memristors have attracted tremendous attention for the next-generation nonvolatile memory for both logic and neuromorphic applications. However, they encounter variability performance challenges which originated from the random ionic transport and conductive filaments formation. Evidently, the electrochemical metallized mechanism associated with ion transport has been elucidated. Nonetheless, the failure mechanism caused by ion transport during cycles is rarely reported. Hereafter, the five stages of failure in the Ag/Ag10Ge15Te75/W memristor are elucidated through ex-situ current-voltage measurements combined with in-situ transmission electron microscopy characteristics. Our investigation reveals that the migration and enrichment of Ag ions result in the precipitation of Ag2Te. The formation of Ag2Te hinders the device's ability to maintain its bipolar characteristics and also decreases the resistance value of the high resistance state, thereby reducing the device's switching ratio. The promising results provide important guidance for the future design of structures and the manipulation of ion transport for high-performance memristors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) has emerged as a promising candidate for the dielectric layer in implantable sensors due to its exceptional biocompatibility, stability, and flexibility. This study introduces an innovative approach to produce graphene-reinforced PDMS (Gr-PDMS), where graphite powders are exfoliated into mono- and few-layer graphene sheets within the polymer solution, concurrently forming cross-linkages with PDMS. This method yields a uniformly distributed graphene within the polymer matrix with improved interfaces between graphene and PDMS, significantly reducing the percolation threshold of graphene dispersed in PDMS from 10% to 5%. As-synthesized Gr-PDMS exhibits improved mechanical and electrical properties, tested for potential use in capacitive pressure sensors. The results demonstrate an impressive pressure sensitivity up to 0.0273 kpa−1, 45 times higher than that of pristine PDMS and 2.5 times higher than the reported literature value. The Gr-PDMS showcases excellent pressure sensing ability and stability, fulfilling the requirements for implantable intracranial pressure (ICP) sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prominent resonance Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopic differences between AA' and AB stacked bilayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) grown by chemical vapor deposition are reported. Bilayer MoS2 islands consisting of the two stacking orders were obtained under identical growth conditions. Resonance Raman and photoluminescence spectra of AA' and AB stacked bilayer MoS2 were obtained on Au nanopyramid surfaces under strong plasmon resonance. Both resonance Raman and photoluminescence spectra show distinct features indicating clear differences in interlayer interaction between these two phases. The implication of these findings on device applications based on spin and valley degrees of freedom will be discussed.

Nowadays, piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) based on poly-(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) have exhibited extensive potential applications in wearable electronics. Improving the piezoelectric performance of PVDF-based PENGs through low-cost and nontoxic fillers is an attractive technology for industrial applications. Herein, we propose a superior piezoelectric performance of PVDF-based PENG with cheap and nontoxic TiO2 nanorods as the regulated fillers. The built-in electric field of the constructed heterostructures in mixed-phase (anatase–rutile) TiO2 nanorods enriches the formation of electroactive β-phase (87.6%) in PVDF. Moreover, the piezoelectric output of the TiO2@PVDF-based PENG (TP-PENG) reaches 42.5 V, which is 15.7 times higher than the pure PVDF-based PENG with the same electrospinning process. The TP-PENG exhibits superior durability within 9000 cycles, being capable of charging the capacitors, powering the diode light-emitting diode (LED) lights, and monitoring real-time human movements. This promotes the great potential of the PENG for a variety of applications, including biomechanical energy harvesting, motion sensing, and powering microelectronic devices. Most importantly, this study demonstrates that the strategy of controlling phase transition and switching between crystal structures is of great relevance to extending the kinds of possible regulating fillers to enhance the performance of PVDF-based PENGs.
