Abstract

To systematically investigate the factors affecting the performance of permeable concrete on road surfaces, blocks with different porosity, particle sizes, water-to-cement ratios, and cement-to-aggregate ratios were prepared. Additionally, varying amounts of admixtures were added to some blocks to explore the influence of the admixture types and content on the performance of permeable concrete. The results indicate that the larger the particle size of the aggregate used in the block preparation, the higher the permeability coefficient of the blocks and the lower the compressive strength. The water-to-cement ratio affects the strength of the cement matrix, resulting in variations in the block strength. A higher cement-to-aggregate ratio leads to a lower porosity in the permeable concrete, a higher cement matrix content, a reduced permeability coefficient, and an increased compressive strength of the blocks.

16. Numerical investigation of groundwater flow systems and their evolution due to climate change in the arid Golmud river watershed on the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract

Climate warming is the greatest future challenge to the hydrosphere and the human community, especially in arid and semiarid regions. This study took the Golmud river watershed on the Tibetan Plateau as an example to numerically identify the development of groundwater flow systems in a large arid sedimentary basin and explore what would the dramatic climate warming pose on groundwater flow system. The numerical results show that the Golmud river watershed has developed three hierarchical groundwater flow systems. River seepage is the predominant recharge for the groundwater systems inside the basin. The local groundwater flow system discharges some 82.69% of all groundwater in the basin, followed by the intermediate system with 14.26% and the regional system with 3.05%. The local system is mainly distributed in the shallow area of the alluvial-pluvial fan at the piedmont and provides the dominant water resource for human exploitation and oasis ecological usages. Climate warming would increase about 30.78% of the quantity of the recharge water to the groundwater system inside the basin via river seepage due to the increasing precipitation and increased glacier melt in the headwater region of the watershed. These waters would pose disturbances to all groundwater flow systems but to different degrees. The local flow system exhibits the largest response to the climate warming with more than 90% of increased water cycled in and discharged through it. The significant groundwater level rising leads to the trailing edge of the overflow belt at the piedmont moving ∼5 km towards to the mountain pass, which would potentially pose a water disaster to the local region. The influences of climate warming on the intermediate and regional flow system are relatively limited. This study provides a preliminary understanding of the influences of climate warming on the groundwater flow systems in arid endorheic basins and is essential for tackling future climate change challenges faced by arid and semiarid regions.

Abstract

Filters are the most important components in micro-irrigation systems, in particular for filtering high levels of suspended solids in reclaimed water. An experiment was conducted using reclaimed water to evaluate the removal efficiencies of sand filters with different uniformity coefficients (UCS) and in combination with sand filters with a 130 µm disc filter (120-mesh). The treatment effects on emitter discharge were also investigated in this study. The results showed that the sand filters exhibited removal efficiencies of 11.4–48.0%, increasing to 30.7–80.3% when combined with the disc filter. The sand filter removal efficiency decreased with increase of the media diameter. A linear-plateau relationship was observed between the removal efficiency and UCS. Compared to the control group, the combined filters reduced emitter clogging and significantly prevented a decrease in emitter discharge. It is suggested using the equivalent diameter, dt, to represent the filter medium diameter instead of using the effective diameter, de. The recommended value for the sand filter UCS > 2.0 for a mean total suspended solids (TSS) of 17.5 ± 12.7 mg l−1. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

43. Use of Geostatistics to Determine the Spatial Variation of Groundwater Quality: A Case Study in Beijing's Reclaimed Water Irrigation Area.

Abstract

In order to determine the distribution variation of groundwater quality in the reclaimed water irrigation area of Beijing, the geostatistics method and ArcGIS9.3 module were used. Based on the normal distribution testing and global trends, the optimal geostatistical interpolation and optimal variogram models for each index were sampled, and the effects of artificial factors and space structure on the water quality index in the reclaimed water irrigation area were determined. The influence of human activities and structural factors on the water quality indicators of groundwater were determined using variability intensity and the nugget effect. The results showed that nitrate content was the water quality indicator in the groundwater that was most sensitive to human activities and could be used as an indicating factor to study groundwater pollution in the study area. In combination with the temporal and spatial variation of groundwater nitrate nitrogen in the study area, it was discovered that the amplification of nitrate nitrogen in the reclaimed water core irrigation area was far less than that in the non-core area. The reasons for such characteristics were vadose zone structure and human activity. The proposed results for groundwater Nitrate-nitrogen distribution can be used to quantify groundwater pollution risk and promote the utilization of wastewater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
