17. Atomic structure and electronic properties of folded graphene nanoribbons: a first-principles study

Abstract

The atomic structure, stacking sequences and electronic structure of folded graphene nanoribbons (FGNRs) are investigated by first-principles calculations. It reveals that the common configurations of all FGNRs are racket-like structures including a nanotube-like edge and two flat nanoribbons. Interestingly, the two flat nanoribbons can form new stacking styles instead of the most stable AB-stacking sequences for bilayer nanoribbons. The stability of the FGNRs are associated with several factors of initial structures, such as interlayer distance of two nanoribbons, stacking sequences, edge styles, and width of nanoribbons. These folded nanoribbons can only be thermodynamically stable when the width reaches about 61 {\AA} and 95 {\AA} for the zigzag and armchair nanoribbons, respectively. In addition, the band gap of the folded zigzag graphene nanoribbons becomes about 0.17 eV, which provides a new way to open the band gap.

Abstract

Resonant splitting phenomena of photons in periodic T-shape waveguide structure are investigated by the Green's function method. It is found that, except for the (n-1)-fold resonant splitting in the low frequency region, (n-2)-fold resonant splitting occurs in the high frequency region of the transmission spectra. The (n-2)-fold resonant splitting peaks are induced by the high quasi-bound states where the photons are mainly localized in the constrictions rather than in the stubs. To this kind of quasi-bound state, the stub acts as a potential barrier rather than a well, which is the inverse of the case of the low quasi-bound states corresponding to the (n-1)-fold splitting peaks. These resonant peaks can be modulated by adjusting the periodic number and geometry of the waveguide structures.

19. Serum lipid ratios as novel prognostic biomarkers for patients with locally advanced breast cancer treated with neoadjuvant therapy

Abstract

ABSTRACTObjectivesTo investigate the association between lipid ratios and survival outcomes in patients with locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy.MethodThis retrospective study included patients with LABC receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Serum lipid levels were prospectively measured at baseline. Associations of triglyceride to total cholesterol (TG/TC), triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein (TG/HDL) and triglyceride to low-density lipoprotein (TG/LDL) ratios with prognosis were evaluated.ResultsPatients with high TG/TC (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 2.47, 95% CI: 1.10, 5.56, p = 0.029), TG/HDL (aHR = 2.73, 95% CI: 1.16, 6.41, p = 0.021) and TG/LDL (aHR = 2.50, 95% CI: 1.11, 5.65, p = 0.027) ratios were more likely to experience disease-free survival (DFS) events. Subgroup analysis suggested that the prognostic impact of lipid ratios was more pronounced in patients with negative HER2 status or those at a high risk of recurrence (e.g. clinical stage III, Ki67 > 30%). Additionally, higher lipid ratios tended to indicate early DFS events (0 ~ 2 years) (TG/TC p = 0.021, TG/HDL p = 0.046, TG/LDL p < 0.001), and the TG/LDL ratio demonstrated the best predictive efficacy (TG/TC vs. TG/HDL vs. TG/LDL, 1-year AUC: 0.724 vs. 0.676 vs. 0.846, 2-year AUC: 0.653 vs. 0.638 vs. 0.708).ConclusionBaseline serum TG/TC, TG/HDL and TG/LDL ratios were independent prognostic factors in patients with LABC undergoing neoadjuvant therapy. However, their utility in predicting the early DFS events warrants further investigation.Clinical trial registrationNCT05621564.

Abstract

The protein phenotypes of extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as promising biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and treatment monitoring. However, the technical challenges in rapid isolation and multiplexed molecular detection of EVs have limited their clinical practice. Herein, we developed a magnetically driven tandem chip to achieve streamlined rapid isolation and multiplexed profiling of surface protein biomarkers of EVs. Driven by magnetic force, the magnetic nanomixers not only act as tiny stir bars to promote mass transfer and enhance reaction efficiency of EVs, but also transport on communicating vessels of the tandem chip continuously and expedite the assay workflow. We designed cyclic surface enhancement of Raman scattering (SERS) tags to bind with target EVs and then release them by exonuclease I, eliminating steric hindrance and amplifying the SERS signal of multiple protein biomarkers on EVs. Due to the excellent assay performance, six breast cancer biomarkers were detected simultaneously on EVs using only 10 μL plasma within 1.5 h. The unweighted SUM signature offers great accuracy in discriminating breast cancer patients from healthy donors. Overall, the dynamic magnetic driving tandem chip offers a new avenue to advance the clinical application of EV‐based liquid biopsy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
